By 2021, worldwide video games sales are expected to hit $140 billion – Last year there were over two billion gamers in the world. Although still male dominated, around 41% of gamers in 2020 were female. AbleGamers estimates that there are 33 million gamers with disabilities in the US alone. Numbers for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC gamers are unreliable and under researched. What we do know is that all these groups are underrepresented within the gaming world. The designers and developers are still largely white and male. Representation in games is rare and too often stereotypical. We want to explore what life is like for feminist gamers.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis looked like a genuine return to form, and then the Steam page went live with an AI disclosure, and fans started counting Lara's guns. Crystal Dynamics says generative AI was only used for placeholders, all "refined or replaced" before release. Fans aren't buying it; the PR team shut down the questions, all against a backdrop of four rounds of layoffs in a single year.
What does "refined" mean? It's doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Let's be honest, the red flags matter more than the reassurances. And what if AI isn't the cause of the industry's job losses, just a convenient thing to blame them on?
Then we discuss Alex Wilton Regan walking away from X, because, in her words, "men and boys are creating child pornography, deepfakes of women, violent images against women, girls, and other minority groups without any repercussions". This leaves us thinking that women and girls are disproportionately feeling the heat of AI, especially when we bring in the unfettered use of the AI-cloned voices in the Remastered Tomb Raider trilogy.

It's just Jem and Alex this week, unpacking the tangled and often very gendered paths that led them to gaming.
They talk printouts of Tomb Raider walkthroughs, MUDs, WoW guilds, boardgaming and family influences.
The chat gets into how the men in their lives and later, the women, shaped how they played and how they differed.
There;s also a shoutout for a women's gaming retreat that's already booked out its next round.

This week Jem, Alex, and Matt go hunting for the side quests that quietly steal the show — the optional detours where some of gaming's best writing and its most surprising characters tend to hide. Expect judgment calls in Dragon Age: Inquisition, an unexpectedly moving Ghost of Tsushima storyline, a Witcher 3 legend, lots of Split Fiction love and a very earnest defence of in-game fishing.

Alex hosts Jem and Matt on Gaming the System, promoting their Patreon and PayPal support, then launches into a discussion of awards and categories through the lens of Clair Obscur, which they describe as transcendent and unfairly dominant in contexts like “debut game,” especially compared with smaller-studio releases. They debate BAFTA/Game Awards vibes, the shift to a single “performer” category, and highlight nominated voice actors including Erika Ishii, Ben Starr, Jennifer English, Troy Baker, and others, plus a call for a dedicated motion/performance-capture award citing Clair Obscur’s mocap work and Charlotte Hopfner. The conversation critiques “safe” corporate diversity choices, trigger warnings used as justification for suppressing difficult art, and contrasts this with celebratory, sanitized event branding, alongside brief thoughts on the new James Bond game’s music/celebrity choices.

Picking up from Family Game, Alex, Jem, and Matt work through Audio Achievement, Music, Narrative, New IP, and Debut Game — with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 casting a long shadow over most of the conversation. Matt has strong feelings about this game. The team has questions about nominations versus wins. Especially when Jem brings some eye-opening numbers about just how many games were in contention before the nominations list was even drawn up.
Representation runs as a thread throughout. Jem raises the diversity controversy surrounding Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Narrative win and makes the broader point that the stories we choose to reward signal which stories are worth telling. The New IP category opens up a more nuanced conversation about appreciation versus appropriation. What does it mean for two white developers to stand on stage to accept an award for a game built around Black American narrative?
Part three is up next week, and covers Best Game, BAFTA Fellowship, and Performer in a Leading Role. Plus, the team discuss the controversies surrounding this year's ceremony, including a game trailer that was pulled from the show at the last minute.

Alex and Matt kick off GTS's two-part coverage of the 22nd BAFTA Games Awards, working their way through the first half of the night's categories and they have opinions.
The pair run through Multiplayer, Artistic Achievement, Evolving Game, Performer in a Supporting Role, British Game, Animation, Game Design, and Technical Achievement. Along the way, they dig into whether BAFTA's categories are broad enough to be meaningful, the tension between hyperrealism and genuine artistry, and whether studios that shipped broken games at launch should get credit for fixing them a decade later. Matt has thoughts on that last one. Strong ones.
They also touch on the changes BAFTA made to its voting process this year, bringing in specialist craft chapters for key categories for the first time and what that might mean for who wins going forward.
Part two is coming, with the remaining categories plus a deeper look at representation, inclusion, and the controversies surrounding the ceremony.

In this episode of Gaming the System, host Matt and guests Alex and Jem discuss girls’ experiences of sport in childhood and adolescence, focusing on how school PE can shape lifelong relationships with physical activity. Alex describes growing up with cerebral palsy in mainstream schools, feeling frustrated and ashamed by inaccessible activities, lack of funding for accommodations, and being shouted at by teachers, while also noting swimming and judo were framed through physiotherapy. Jem shares loving sport in primary school but being driven away by a hostile, competitive high school environment, repeated humiliation in PE, and being allowed to sit out athletics until later discovering aerobics as a more positive option.

Sometimes the things shaping how we feel about our hobby are the things we can't see.
In Part 1, we dug into Oxford research showing that when it comes to gaming and mental health, the hours matter far less than whether the time felt worthwhile. This week, we pick the thread back up and follow it somewhere unexpected.
Matt offers a striking metaphor borrowed from physics: dark matter made visible because of how it pulls on everything around it. The way we feel about our gaming and the way others react is shaped by forces we can't always name. 120 hours in game is badge of honour in some circles and a dirty secret in others.
We touch on how gaming can be a refuge during stressful moments, family card games can reaffirm sibling bonds, and finding your tribe, or tribes. We finish up with another study from the Oxford Internet Institute, which maps out 13 distinct mechanisms through which gaming can affect mental health. Finally the conversation might begin to move past "how much" and toward "how, why, and for whom."

Is screen time the enemy, or is it the shame we attach to it? In this episode, GTS examine new research suggesting it's not how long you spend gaming that affects your mental health, but whether you feel that time was worthwhile.
Jem, Alex and Matt unpack Perceived Value of Video Games, but Not Hours Played, Predicts Mental Well-Being in Casual Adult Nintendo Players, a study led by Dr. Nick Ballou (Oxford Internet Institute) published in March 2025.
Across 703 players and over 140,000 hours of Nintendo Switch gameplay, the research found no meaningful link between playtime and wellbeing. But, they did find that players who felt their gaming was a positive use of time showed measurably better outcomes.
They dig deep into what the research doesn't quite address: who gets to decide what counts as time well spent? Is the pressure to justify our gaming habits doing more damage than the hours logged ever could - particularly for women?
Expect personal stories, honest reflections on gaming-related shame, and a conversation that pushes back hard on the idea that healthy gaming has a time limit attached to it. Part one of two.

In this episode of Gaming the System, Gem, Alex, and Matt discuss a recent Sex Roles study showing that women gamers who identify as feminists or take action for gender equality are blamed more for the sexism they experience online, especially by people with stronger sexist attitudes. They outline two studies using a League of Legends scenario involving a gamer named Lucia, where participants assigned more blame when Lucia was described as a feminist or as engaging in more extreme collective action. The hosts connect these findings to broader patterns of victim-blaming, institutional sexism, and manosphere-driven misogyny, and they explore how “feminist killjoy” fears can discourage speaking up. They share personal experiences of gendered hostility in gaming spaces, discuss “passing” and choosing battles, and reflect on how the podcast provides support and confidence while sometimes increasing visibility as a target.

This week Jem, Matt and Alex take a look at three stories from across the games industry.
Alex kicks things off with Nvidia's DLSS 5 controversy. Their latest AI graphics feature has been accused of applying unwanted filters to game visuals, including some telling changes to female characters' faces. Matt brings the receipts on Fortnite's quiet currency devaluation, despite Epic Games pulling in $6 billion last year. The conversation opens up into a wider chat about digital ownership and in-game economies. And Jem covers the ESA's new Accessible Games Initiative, asking whether standardised accessibility tags on storefronts are a genuine step forward, or just performative without the systemic change to back them up.

Alex hosts gem and Matt on Gaming the System to discuss, tongue-in-cheek, how gaming can help build “hard skills” that could translate to a CV. They focus on campaign/project management through clear goals, planning, progress tracking, and decision-making, citing examples like Assassin’s Creed, Sniper Elite, Stardew Valley, and Pandemic Legacy, and referencing a University of Rochester study about faster decision-making. They explore storage and inventory management through resource limits, trading, and organization in games like Tomb Raider, Skyrim, Nioh 3, Unpacking, Animal Crossing, and Enshrouded. Time management is discussed via racing challenges (Spyro), shroud timers (Enshrouded), estimating task effort, and critiques of productivity pressures. They also cover adapting to different control schemes and accessibility, comparing controllers vs keyboard/mouse and learning curves for new gamers. In Part 1, Jem, Alex, and Matt explored the Women in Games Manifesto and the persistent gender gap in the games industry. In this follow-up episode, the conversation turns to artificial intelligence. Could it be the catalyst for change the industry needs, or is it making things worse?
Jem shares her own experiment, asking Gemini to generate images of a "young video gamer," a "game designer," and a "CEO". The results reveal a lot about the biases baked into AI systems. The team also digs into the environmental cost of AI, the impact of data centres on water usage and hardware availability, and what it means that women are underrepresented in the AI industry too.

The hosts discuss how visible identity affects prejudice and whether men are less likely to challenge toxic masculinity because they can “pass” as traditionally masculine through code switching. They explore the “crisis of masculinity,” arguing patriarchy harms everyone but disproportionately harms women, trans, and non-binary people, while wealth and power shape outcomes most. The conversation covers performative masculinity, loneliness and the incel movement as exploited vulnerability, and the idea of choosing voluntary celibacy to reduce “sex noise” and rediscover identity. They also argue that diverse media representation expands what’s possible and that gaming, through choice, multiple playstyles, and role experimentation, undermines the idea there is only one way to be a man or a person.

This episode continues a multi-part conversation on masculinity and “positive masculinity,” focusing on who gets to define masculinity and how the concept has changed throughout history. The discussion is sparked by China’s media crackdown on “effeminate men,” framed as promoting “revolutionary culture” and official morality, and explores how gender norms can function as social and political control in authoritarian systems and beyond. The speakers compare cultural expectations across China, the US, and the UK, including how class shaped one host’s upbringing and feelings of needing to repress traits seen as nontraditional. They argue that claims of a single “natural” masculinity mirror narratives that present capitalism and other systems as inevitable, and they critique propaganda that equates masculinity with aggression, dominance, and emotional suppression. The conversation examines figures like Andrew Tate as reinforcing a hierarchy that exploits young men, and references research suggesting testosterone is linked to status-seeking rather than inherent violence. The episode connects hardening gender roles to periods of crisis and to broader political scapegoating—of migrants, LGBTQ+ people, women, and disabled people—arguing these narratives distract from inequality and protect those with wealth and power by keeping “peasants” fighting each other instead of challenging the ruling class.

As the year moves toward the winter solstice, this episode of Gaming the System explores how light and darkness function as both technical tools and emotional languages in games. Jem, Alex and Matt reflect on how lighting shapes atmosphere, tension and meaning, and how the darker months influence how we play.
Games including Alan Wake 2, Little Nightmares 3, Abzu, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, GRIS, Concrete Genie, and, of course, Tomb Raider are discussed as examples of games where light and darkness are central to storytelling.
The episode also unpacks metaphor and subversion: darkness as rest rather than evil, light as exposure rather than safety, and how stealth, shadows and day/night cycles impact game play. From survival games where night radically alters play, to titles that use colour, seasons and weather to evoke emotional responses, the conversation highlights how games mirror our need for contrast, pause and recalibration.
A reflective, quietly festive episode that sits in the space between endings and beginnings.

In the final part of our series on death in games, we shift from mechanics to meaning. We explore how modern games use grief, memory, and emotional pacing to create more honest depictions of loss than many linear stories can manage. From Spiritfarer and Edith Finch to Journey, Hellblade, and God of War, we look at how interactive storytelling allows players to pause, avoid, or confront difficult moments in their own time. This mirrors real-life grief far more closely than film or TV.
We also discuss the long-running trope of the “dead loved one” as narrative fuel, the rise of emotionally literate writing in games, and the growing recognition of games as a space people actively use to process bereavement. Finally, we talk about “digital ghosts” immortalised through save files, screenshots, and videos that become unexpected mementoes of who we once were. Can we digitally capture our souls this way?
A reflective, grounded conversation about how games help us face endings and why these virtual experiences stay with us long after we log off.

In this second episode of our three-part series on Death in Games, Jem, Alex, and Matt dig deeper into how death is portrayed across gaming, and what that means for how we understand grief, resilience, and the human condition.
We explore whether repeated, low-stakes death in games desensitises players, or whether the real issue lies in hyperreal shooters that mirror real-world conflicts. We also discuss how emotionally grounded games like God of War create space to reflect on grief in ways that feel unexpectedly profound.
We talk about the emotional shock of losing companions, the narrative power of killing characters early (hello, Game of Thrones), and why failure loops and boss fights quietly teach resilience far better than most real-life systems do.
There’s also a look at permadeath modes: who plays them, why they’re stressful as hell, and why “hardest mode or you’re not a real gamer” is absolute nonsense.
We end the episode with one-sentence lessons we can take from in-game death including Alex’s fridge magnet slogan.
Games that get a mention: Fortnite, Overwatch, Call of Duty, God of War, Split Fiction, Baldur’s Gate 3, Pandemic Legacy.
Next time: Part 3 will look at how modern games explore grief, memory, and meaning

In this episode, hosted by Jem, the GTS team explores how games use death as a storytelling tool, a gameplay mechanic, or a cheap shot. From emotional companion deaths to endless respawn loops, we dig into what death actually means in games, and why some deaths hit hard while others barely register.
Death throws
We discuss the difference between narrative deaths and mechanical deaths and how respawn loops shape how we think about failure. In the second half of our AI in gaming discussion, we turn to the rise of intelligent NPCs – and what happens when they start to think for themselves. Could AI make game worlds richer and more believable, or would it destroy the structure and chaos we love?
The team explore how realism can both enhance and break immersion, from the comedic unpredictability of NPCs in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey to the eerie brilliance of the Shadow of Mordor Nemesis System, which made enemies remember and evolve from past encounters. There’s nostalgia for the “arrow to the knee” days, when NPCs were part of the joke, and concern that too much autonomy could strip away that sense of fun.
A discussion of the AI Darth Vader in Fortnite—who quickly went rogue and started swearing at players—highlights the dangers of unleashing learning systems in live environments. From there, the conversation moves into deeper territory: if NPCs become lifelike, will players form stronger emotional attachments? And what does it mean when games make us feel guilty for our virtual actions?
This episode explores the uneasy balance between innovation and control, and what the future of AI may hold for how we interact, connect, and care inside virtual worlds.

In this first of two episodes exploring AI and gaming, Jem, Matt, and Alex discuss the arrival of AI co-pilots — new tools from Microsoft and Google designed to sit within your game and offer real-time hints, walkthroughs, and quest support.
The team examine whether these helpers could make games more accessible and inclusive, or if they risk taking over and removing the joy (and sometimes frustration) of discovery. We discuss how AI advice compares to walkthroughs, guides, and playground tips that have long been part of gaming culture, and consider whether convenience might come at the cost of creativity and community engagement.
Will using AI co-pilots blur the line between helping and cheating? Or could they usher in lazy game design? If we rely too heavily on AI, do we risk losing access to our own critical thinking?
We discuss the very nature of challenge, support and accessibility, before circling back to one key theme, trust. Can we truly depend on AI to provide the right advice when it still generates incorrect answers and risks stripping away the human touch that makes gaming culture so rich? What will we lose if we no longer rely on walkthroughs written with care, the sibling hints shouted across the room and the sense of solving something for yourself?
In part two, we will explore what happens when AI begins to influence the characters we meet and the worlds we inhabit.
Join the conversation by sharing your thoughts on AI, gaming, and what “help” really means.

In this Gaming the System breaking news episode, Jem, Alex, and Matt dive into the shocking $55 billion sale of Electronic Arts (EA) — the publisher behind The Sims, Battlefield, and Dragon Age — to a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), alongside Silver Lake Partners and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners.
The team unpacks what this means for the gaming world, from concerns about human rights and LGBTQ+ representation to the growing influence of “sports-washing” and “game-washing” in global entertainment.
Alex explains Saudi Arabia’s wider Vision 2030 strategy, including its push to dominate eSports and professional sports, while Matt breaks down the financial mechanics behind the leveraged buyout — and what that could mean for EA’s future stability, creative direction, and staff.
We dig into how EA’s new ownership connects to Trump’s political circle and the potential disappearance of queer and diverse narratives. And ask about the broader moral and cultural implications for developers, players, and the industry at large.
This episode asks the big question: Who really owns gaming — and what happens when creative freedom collides with authoritarian money?

In this episode of Gaming the System, we continue our exploration of community gaming, focusing on the world of board game cafés. What makes these spaces so appealing, and what role can they play in bringing people together?
Jem, Alex, and Matt share their personal experiences of cafés such as Dice Box and Wayfarers Rest and the Herefordshire Board Gamers tent at Fantasy Forest. We consider the stereotypes that still cling to gaming spaces, from male-dominated tournaments to the intimidating pub-like vibe some cafés can give off, and contrast that with the warmth and creativity of cafés run with community values at their heart.
Our discussion touches on the challenges of running such a venture, from the cost of high street premises to the difficulty of keeping food, drink, and board games coexisting in harmony. How board game cafés might thrive as community hubs, not just as places to play games, but as safe and welcoming spaces where families, newcomers, and neurodivergent people can find connection.
Finally, we indulge in imagining our ideal board game café, from gaming sommeliers and plush seating to D&D nights, indie game showcases, and healthy snacks. Could these cafés be more than just businesses—could they be catalysts for stronger, more resilient communities?

August’s gaming news gave us plenty to dig into, from serious questions around Roblox to a milestone celebration for Baldur’s Gate 3.
In this episode of Gaming the System, we start with Roblox, where over 120,000 people have signed a petition calling for the removal of its CEO. Jem takes us inside the strange contradictions of the platform — from heavy-handed moderation and unexplained bans to the bizarre and sometimes deeply troubling games, and on to concerns about kids being pushed into unsafe spaces beyond the game. It sparks a wider discussion on responsibility, regulation, and why parents need to be part of their children’s online lives.
We then turn to something a little lighter as Baldur’s Gate 3 celebrates its second birthday. From bizarre mods to chaotic playthroughs, we look at how the game has grown, how the community keeps it alive, and why it continues to hold such a special place in our gaming lives.

We took a month off over the summer, so thought we'd catch up with each other and see what we've been playing!
From epic samurai adventures in Ghost of Tsushima and the fluid, meditative landscapes of Sword of the Sea, to the punishing but rewarding battles of Expedition 33 (Clair Obscur).
Jem headed to the beach with Dave the Diver and Coral Island, and enjoyed some quality family time with Split Fiction. Matt headed out on a Fallout road trip, hitting New Vegas, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4. Alex found herself in Japan, with Ghost of Tsushima, following the trail of an avenging Samurai.
The discussion ranges from quirky dungeon crawlers on the Switch to the frustrations of difficulty settings, and the strange joys of Death Stranding 2.
Looking ahead, the trio share what’s on their gaming horizons — sequels like Ghost of Yōtei, returning classics like Professor Layton, Tears of the Kingdom, and ambitious projects such as Final Fantasy XVI, Black Myth: Wukong, Outer Wilds 2, Metal Gear Solid Delta, and Dead Take featuring some of the biggest names in voice acting today.
It’s a wide-ranging, funny, and thoughtful conversation about how gaming fits into everyday life, whether you’re immersing yourself in a sprawling story or dipping into something light and quirky for a few minutes of escape.

In this second half of our adventure into open-world games, Jem, Alex, and Matt pick up the conversation with a focus on accessibility, open worlds done wrong, and how to define that "Je ne sais quoi" when it works.
We dig into overwhelm, especially for neurodiverse or time-poor gamers. Time to remember that good accessibility features aren’t about “dumbing down” but enhancing play for everyone.
Matt unpacks why some open-world games fail — empty maps, repetitive quests, weak writing, and executive-led design — while Alex shares her frustrations with fatigue and grinding that make huge maps feel like chores. We compare the worst offenders to the triumphs, asking what makes games like Elden Ring or The Witcher 3 consistently compelling.
Jem brings the stats: if only 14% of open-world players are women, what does that say about how these games are designed and marketed? Are women genuinely less interested, or are the games themselves exclusionary?
Finally, we ask the big question: do we prefer games with clear endings or endless play?
Will all of this soon be obsolete with the advent of AI supported writing? That's a topic for a future episode!

In this second part of our journey into the Woke Games Steam List, Matt, Jem, and Alex continue dissecting the spreadsheet compiled by a Steam group determined to flag games they believe are “too woke.” The list includes 1,600 titles categorised based on content they find politically or socially objectionable, particularly anything seen as pro LGBTQ+, progressive themes, or diverse narratives.
In this episode, the GTS Pod explores what motivates this kind of cataloguing, who benefits from it, and what it tells us about gamers and the industry.
Absurd - Calling Hades out for LGBTQ+ characters - you've read some Greek myths right!?
Overt - Elden Ring - overly pro-LGBT!? - There's not a single overt moment in the game.
No stone left unturned - You have to play a lot of The Witcher 3 to find a minor character's hidden gay backstory.
“They’ve done a really good piece of research here… what they’ve shown is that people want woke games.” — Jem
“You don’t need to understand why these horrifying things happen, just that they can—and that should inform how you live.” — Matt
“They have to play the shit out of these games to get some of the conclusions they’ve got.” — Alex
While serious in theme, this episode balances critique with a touch of dry humour and clear-eyed reflection. The hosts neither dismiss the spreadsheet outright nor let its authors off the hook. Instead, they explore how such attempts to gatekeep culture often backfire—offering more insight into societal change than the creators may have intended.
As always, the team brings an intersectional feminist lens to the conversation, grounding their analysis in empathy, history, and an unflinching look at how backlash often reveals more about fear than fact.

In this first half of our two-part deep dive, the Gaming the System crew tackles a bizarre and troubling corner of the gaming world: a Steam curator list designed to help players avoid so-called “woke” games. Yes, really.
Matt, Jem, and Alex dissect this extensive (and often baffling) database compiled by those who see diversity, empathy, and inclusion as threats to gaming. We explore the origins of the term "woke," how it's been weaponised by the political right, and how it's used here as a catch-all for anything remotely progressive, from LGBT+ representation to pro-environmental themes.
What does “woke” even mean anymore? Why are empathy and awareness now considered dangerous? And what can this curated list tell us about the broader culture war in games?
You’ll hear reflections on historical context, linguistic appropriation, and how control over language shapes the battlefield. We also look closely at the group's supposed “discussion rules” behind the list, and what those reveal about attempts to mask ideological extremism behind a facade of reasonableness.
From mocking the list’s contradictions to tracing its deeply political implications, we keep things sharp, critical, and (as always) intersectionally feminist.
Highlights:
Shifting definitions of “woke” and its appropriation across decades
Representation in games becomes a lightning rod for backlash
Forum rules can serve as a cloak for exclusionary ideology
Children of Men, the roots of the term “stay woke,” and more
DEI or DIE?

In the second half of our conversation with Chris on writing in games, we dive even deeper into how writing has evolved across the gaming industry. From the early days of text-based adventures to cinematic storytelling powerhouses like God of War and Baldur's Gate 3, we explore what makes game writing work.
We touch on the layered history of iconic characters like Lara Croft and James Bond, and how their portrayals reflect broader societal shifts. Is Lara’s journey just about tomb raiding, or does it say something deeper about class, identity, and representation? Why does 007's timeless charm continue to appeal?

Highlights:
Featured games - Elden Ring, The Witcher 3 , World of Warcraft, Split Fiction and Space Marine 2 to name a few.
Whether you're a player, a writer, or just curious about the storytelling potential of games, this episode pulls back the curtain on how narratives are built in the world of interactive entertainment.

In this final instalment of our Gamer Guilt series, we delve into the emotional baggage of gaming: the backlog shame spiral, perfectionism, and the internalised pressure to “do it right.” Hosted by Jem, with Alex and Matt in conversation, this episode is a thoughtful, funny, and heartfelt wrap-up on how guilt seeps into our gaming habits—and how we can begin to let it go.
Do you really need to finish every game you start?
From towering game libraries to piles of unread books, we explore the guilt of not finishing—and why sometimes we need to remember that the journey, not the destination, is enough.
Therapy, spreadsheets, and the Hitman roguelike spiral
Matt walks us through his epic journey modding Hitman: Freelancer, tracking progress via spreadsheets, and why he abandoned completionism in favour of joy.
Game shame: Are mobile games ‘real’ games?
We challenge our own gaming snobbery: Is playing FIFA or mobile puzzle games somehow less valid than a 100-hour epic RPG? And what does our choice of games say about us?
Wisdom from Gotham’s Hugo Strange
Yes, really. We discuss

In the fourth and final episode of our Baldur’s Gate 3 FanCast, Matt, Alex, Jem, and returning guest Fin wrap up our casting choices and fawn over the companions who’ve stolen our hearts and party spots. This time, it’s all about Karlach, Jaheira, and the one and only Boo - no, Minsc.
From Minsc's psychology to shaking hands with Neil Newbon, this episode celebrates everything we love about BG3: heart, trauma, power, and a surprising amount of hamster love.
Missed the earlier episodes? Catch up for hot takes on Astarion, Shadowheart, Lae’zel, Gale, and more in our previous FanCast episodes!
In This Episode:
Minsc & Boo: Space Hamster Royalty
Castings the most chaotic duo in Faerûn—including a surprisingly stylish take on Boo and the perfect pick for Minsc’s earnest dimbo energy.
Jaheira: Druidic Dignity & Lesbian Icon Energy
Jem reflects on Jaheira’s OG BG1 legacy, while the team debates the best fit for her fierce, wise, and exasperated persona—from Cate Blanchett’s mythic gravitas to Salma Hayek’s layered nobility.
Karlach: The Tiefling Barbarian With a Heart (And Engine) of Gold
She’s tough, sweet, and canonically a “muscle mommy.” From non-binary rep to fiery feelings, we celebrate Karlach’s big heart and bigger hugs—with casting picks ranging from Gladiators’ Saber to Emma D’Arcy in full GQ glory.
Fin’s Comic Con Chronicles
Fin shares the joy (and posing panics) of meeting some of the BG3 cast, the Astarion tattoo they kept respectfully hidden from Neil Newbon, and what it meant to be seen in a moment of overwhelm.

Gaming the System – March News Round-Up (Part 1)
In This Episode:
This week, your favourite feminist gaming trio—Alex, Jem, and Matt—dive into the March headlines with their signature mix of insight, laughter, and righteous indignation. From poker-playing indie darlings to FOMO-fueled spending sprees, we dissect the news through a feminist lens, asking: who benefits, who loses out, and what’s hiding beneath the surface?
This is Part 1 of 2 in our March news round-up. Please stay tuned for more in Part 2, where we continue our exploration of power, money, and representation in gaming culture.
🔑 Key Moments This Episode:
🎯 “Tinder for Games” – or just another algorithm trap?
We kick off with Ludocene, the swipe-right-style discovery app that promises to help players find hidden indie gems. But is it a playful solution to choice paralysis, or another gatekeeping algorithm dressed up in novelty? (Spoiler: capitalism always finds a way.)
🎮 PEGI, Poker & Power Plays
Matt breaks down the absurd saga of Balatro, the wildly successful “poker with cheating” indie game that was slapped with an 18+ rating, despite no gambling or real money changing hands. The twist? Triple-A games with actual loot boxes skate through with lower age ratings. Jem and Alex expose the hypocrisy, gatekeeping, and who sits on the ratings boards. Hint: it’s the people with the most to lose if indie games thrive.
🛍️ Epic Fails?
Jem brings the heat on Epic Games and their shady “limited-time sale” tactics, currently under legal fire from concerned parents. We examine the ethics of engineered scarcity, the pressure it places on young gamers, and how companies exploit gambling mechanics to drive sales. Matt adds a union perspective on consumer exploitation—and how education is our best defence.

Welcome back to Gaming The System, the podcast where three intersectional feminists 🎭 examine gaming through a critical lens. In this four-part series, we’re deep-diving into Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3), imagining our dream cast for a potential TV adaptation 📺, and unpacking what makes these characters so compelling.
Series Overview:
We’re taking on the ultimate challenge—casting Baldur’s Gate 3 as a live-action series. Across four episodes, we debate the perfect actors for companion and non-companion characters, sharing our favourite (and sometimes unhinged) headcanons along the way. Plus, we delve into BG3’s rich themes of identity, choice, and representation in gaming.
✨ Episode 3 Highlights:
We explore some of the most chaotically bisexual, morally complex, and fiercely beloved figures in the game. We debate voiced vs. silent protagonists, the sheer queer energy of the BG3 fandom, and the best coats in gaming history.
🔹🐶 Tav & The Great Name Debate
Ever wondered why “Tav” is the default name for your BG3 character? Turns out, it’s a dog thing . (Yes, really.) Plus, we discuss whether a live-action version of Tav should be male, female, or nonbinary.
🔹 ⚔️ Minthara: Homicidal Bisexual Energy Personified
She has paladin zeal, a deadpan delivery, and hates Gale. Our casting choices range from the seductive menace of Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) to Lena Headey’s (Game of Thrones) full-throttle villain mode. We also consider the Reddit-approved method for recruiting her without committing war crimes.
🔹 🦇 Astarion: The Chaotic Trauma Vampire We All Love
What do Andrew Scott, Jamie Campbell Bower, Matthew Lillard, and Johnny Flynn have in common? They could all be Astarion. But would they do justice to 200 years of enslavement, trauma, and biting sarcasm? We dissect one of BG3’s most complex characters, from his petulant charm to his deeply raw emotional arc. Also: the moment he stabs Cazador is some of the best acting in gaming—fight us.
🔹 🏳️🌈 The Queerest Game Ever?
BG3 is saturated with queer-coded energy. We talk about the fan culture, the thirst, and how characters like Minthara, Astarion, and Karlach have become iconic in LGBTQ+ gaming spaces.
🔹 🎤 Voiced vs. Silent Protagonist Debate
Should RPG heroes speak? We debate the pros and cons of having a fully voiced protagonist vs. leaving things up to player imagination—drawing from Dragon Age, Fallout, Witcher, Cyberpunk, and BG3 🎮.

Welcome back to Gaming the System, where three intersectional feminists examine gaming and games through a feminist lens! In this third installment of our Gamer Guilt series, Jem, Alex, and Matt dive into the financial side of gaming—how much we spend, how we justify it, and the guilt that sometimes comes with it.
💰 Gaming vs. Other Hobbies
We rarely question the cost of sports, music, or collecting hobbies, but why is gaming spending scrutinised? From consoles to digital libraries, our hosts break down the real costs of gaming and compare them to other pastimes.
📈 The Cost of Games: Then vs. Now
Is £70 for a game really that steep considering the time-cost value? Or is it just the ever-rising price of entertainment? The team discusses how gaming expenses have changed, why some titles feel “worth it,” and whether digital ownership is truly ownership at all.
💸 Regrettable Purchases & Money Well Spent
From Steam refunds to unexpected subscription traps, Alex and Matt share their biggest gaming purchase regrets, including a mysterious musical pigeon misadventure. Meanwhile, Jem reflects on the psychological pull of in-game spending and the ethical concerns of microtransactions.
📚 Games, Books, and the Changing Meaning of Ownership
What happens when companies remove access to purchased content as digital storefronts dominate? The team touches on the recent Kindle controversy and how it mirrors the gaming world’s shift toward subscriptions and live-service models.

Welcome back to Gaming The System! This week, Jem, Alex, and Matt are back with Part 2 of our deep dive into gamer guilt—this time, exploring how guilt shows up in unexpected ways, from screen time worries to external judgement, and why we feel the need to justify our gaming habits.
This episode goes beyond just gaming and into the big stuff—self-worth, productivity, social connection, and the pressure to "use our time wisely." Why do some hobbies feel more acceptable than others? And how can we embrace gaming as a meaningful part of life without the guilt?
What’s in this episode?
🪡 Gaming vs. "productive" hobbies – Why does embroidery feel like a mindful, valid use of time, while gaming gets side-eyed? The team explores how hands-on hobbies get a free pass in ways gaming rarely does.
🧑🤝🧑 Solo vs. social gaming – Is gaming more “acceptable” if it’s social? We talk D&D, multiplayer guilt, and why sometimes gaming alone is exactly what we need
💬 “Gaming is built into our souls.” Matt shares how gaming has become a powerful connector in his family, and why removing gaming from his life would mean losing a vital part of himself.
😤 Rawdogging life?! – We unpack the latest toxic trend of “just enduring your thoughts” and why we’re firmly pro-podcast, pro-gaming, and pro-enjoying your downtime.

Gaming The System: Gamer Guilt Part 1 – Show Notes
🎮 Welcome back to Gaming The System! This week, Jem, Alex, and Matt dive into gamer guilt—that nagging feeling about how much time we spend gaming, what we play, and whether we’re making the “right” choices with our hobby.
This episode focuses on time, priorities, and responsibility—how we fit gaming into our lives, the social pressures that make us feel guilty, and how different perspectives shape our experiences.
What’s in this episode?
🕰️ Matt: "Whenever I look at the amount of hours I've put into something, I think, ‘Oh, I'm so glad I've been able to pour so much time into this thing.’" * ⚖️ The “right” way to spend free time? Why is gaming often seen as less valid than other hobbies, like sports or reading? How does guilt creep in when we could be doing something “more productive”?
🤯 Alex: "My feelings of guilt really [are] based around the feeling that I'm not doing enough. Whatever enough means." * 🤯 Social pressures & self-worth – From societal expectations to deeply ingrained personal guilt, the discussion takes a fascinating turn into the emotional labor women face, productivity culture, and even the pressure to have children.
💭 Jem: "Lying on your couch and just thinking is not something that is at all encouraged these days...we're always encouraged to strive for the next thing and be making ourselves better, doing more things." * 🎭 Personal experiences with guilt – Matt shares insights into how he’s built a gaming/life balance through structured routines, Alex discusses gaming as a solitary vs. social experience, and Jem reflects on juggling gaming with parenthood.
🏗️ Matt: "If you can shrink the list of needs down to as small as you can and then turn to look at what do I want to do...
👀 Up next in Part 2 – We tackle spending guilt, game preferences, and the completionist trap. Plus, is screen time guilt real? And why do some hobbies feel more "productive" than gaming? Don’t miss it!

Baldur’s Gate 3 Fancast – Part 2 🎭Welcome back, adventurers! Last time, we debated the perfect fan cast for three of Baldur’s Gate 3’s beloved (and despised) characters. This time, we’re diving even deeper into the party lineup—tackling the unstoppable force that is Lae’zel and the criminally underwritten Wyll. We also dive into the importance of accessibility in gaming.
Alex, Matt and Jem are once again joined by BG3 superfan, Fin, to discuss everything from modding chaos to confessions of a Mind Flayer romance. (no judgment... okay, maybe a little).
🏆 Episode Highlights
🦎 Lae’zel, the Ultimate Warrior: Is she terrifying? Yes. Did we romance her anyway? Also yes. Either way, she's a force to be reckoned with, so which actors do we think could bring her fearsome energy to the big screen?
🔧 Modding & Accessibility: From UI fixes to making Raphael hotter (vital), we discuss how mods are changing the game—literally. But is it ableist for Larian to punish players by removing achievements when using mods?
⚔️ Wyll’s Rewrite Woes: Once a morally complex hero, now… a shadow of his previous self? We break down how his last-minute rewrite weakened his story—and how our dream casting could save him.
🔥 The Moral Maze: If Wyll wants to kill Karlach, can we kill Wyll? Discuss.
💬 Parasocial Chaos: The BG3 voice cast has gone full rockstar, but where’s the line between fan appreciation and… handing them an already-opened sex toy at Comic-Con?
🐙 Romancing the Emperor?! Look, no shame—but let’s talk about the moment someone got intimate with a giant psychic squid (in front of Orpheus!).
Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to be the game that keeps on giving, and we’re not done yet! Stay tuned for Part 3, where we tackle even more characters and maybe recover from the Karlach-related emotional damage.

We went back to our roots and talked about how haming and feminism intersect. We had a friendly crowd and the event itself was wonderful and we're very proud of the show we put on.
P.S. We've recorded and edited the audio as best we can, so hopefully it isn't too jarring to listen to.

We're very excited to be part of the launch of Library Labyrinth, a boardgame about a haunted library where heroines from history and fiction must battle the terrors that have escaped from the books. We are joined by two of the developers, Mill and Jess, to explore the game.
Trigger warning for this one. War has always been a man's game, but the impact on women and their stories are rarely examined in games.
2021 was a rough year, but we are optimistic intersectional feminist gamers and we are very excited for the games 2022 has in store for us.

Halloween might be over, but we've granted it a slight extension as tonight in our Live Show we will be discussing gender in horror games. We will be asking if female characters get a raw deal and whether horror games promote toxic masculinity. We will also be exploring just exactly what Daddening is and why it matters to feminist gamers. Join us for all this and more!

Let's go a Viking with alex and matt as they discuss the latest epic in the Assassin's Creed series.
Gaming touches the lives of billions of people. Such a wide impact presents the opportunity to influence society. We'll discuss the past, present and future of this impact and how it can move the needle towards a bold egalitarian society.

Are depictions of games in other media at all accurate? Do they make us cringe or cheer? What's your favourite and what's the worst?
Special guest Anya took a break from a lifelong gaming habit and tells us how she rediscovered her love of games.
We've been mulling over what makes for iconic characters and undoubtedly their hair is a vital component.
A treat this week, our guest is the inimitable Dr Hannah Barham Brown, all rounder in all things. However she is a sceptic of the gaming scene and the GTS team attempt to bring her to the dark side of gaming.
We are talking about the ongoing mess that is the Activision Blizzard saga. Everything kicked off in late July when Activision Blizzard were sued by the state of California over widespread harassment of women. Headlines over it's "frat boy" culture have spawned into yet more terrible revelations for the company, with a few PR disasters thrown in for good measure.
We are here to talk about it all from a #FeministLens, and highlight exactly why this is an issue that deserves all the attention it's getting. We'll also discuss why feminism and inclusive practice are key to dismantling both the patriarchy and discrimination. Join us!
Gaming the System bring their feminist lens to looking at the Gaming BAFTA awards ceremony held earlier in the year and talk about the glitz, the glamour but mostly the games.
A compilation of our best and brightest moments from our first 6 months.

This week we're reflecting on E3 2021 and all the announcements, news, trailers and "world exclusives" for upcoming video games. Was it good, bad or ugly? Did companies and execs shy away from addressing ongoing issues about sexual harassment in the industry? Come chat & discuss with us...
Everyone has one of these stories. We share when board games brought out the worst in us.
Kate, concept artist for Mediatonic, will be joining the team to talk about working in the gaming industry. We will also be looking at how welcoming the industry is or is not for women at this time.
Everything from Ludo to Caverna and in between. Gaming the System goes Tabletop and talks about the appeal of non computerised gaming in a shock turn of events.
What tropes stand out most to you? How do seeing these tropes make you feel? What pisses you off about seeing these tropes? What tropes have you internalised about women? Why does this failure of representation persist? How do these gender tropes and failures of representation impact the societ that consumes them?
Our most controversial topic yet. What games beloved by millions just make us go "urrgh who cares"?

Why is gaming such a feminist issue to us? Why are women excluded from gaming? Why are some women far more than others excluded from gaming? What needs to change and what is already changing?
Which games do we find ourselves lost in with the most clarity? How does a game set in a high fantasy environment make you feel like it is a home to you? what games hit that transcendant level of immersion?
What games do you enjoy that you feel you shouldn't? As a feminist? As a gamer? As a person? The team reveal all.
Time for a Confession Session.
Our mandate is viewing gaming through a feminist lens but what are the games we love regardless of any problematic connotations they may have?
Gaming is a source of joy for 100s of millions of people. How does gaming impact mental health? How can it help? How can it harm? How is mental illness portrayed in games?

Why are there so few women in Esports? Where does the problem lie? With Esports or with women? There was also a slight technical hitch which made for an amusing post production repair.
Why do women continue to be hypersexualised in games? Why were they in the first place? Why does it matter? How do we change it?
In a discussion about the social aspects of gaming, and the concerns women have taking part in social games, the team talk about intersectionality, gatekeeping in games. Can games be intersectional? Should they be? And who are the gamers anyway? Who decided? You? Us?? Them???
A short until next week - many of think of gaming as an escape but do we want to escape into isolation or into a community?
Gamers are increasingly diverse and intersectional, but are the games, characters and designers? Are attitudes keeping up? What does a feminist gamer play? Can we game the system? Join us while we explore our two great loves, Feminism and Gaming.
