In this episode, we begin Book Four of the Psalms by exploring Psalms 90–95. These songs remind us that the Psalms are more than ancient poetry—they are a prayer journal that gives voice to our deepest fears, joys, questions, and hopes. As you read them, let them shape your own conversations with God.

We begin with Psalm 90, the only psalm attributed to Moses. In it, Moses reflects on the brevity of life and prays, "Teach us to number our days." What would change if we truly lived with that perspective? Even in the midst of life's hardships, this psalm points us toward God's faithfulness and includes a beautiful prayer we can pray over our families and friends.

Psalm 91 answers the struggles of Psalm 90 by reminding us that our true shelter is the Most High God. No matter what we face, our security is found not in our circumstances but in God's presence and protection.

As we continue through Psalms 92–94, we discover reasons to praise God for His steadfast love (chesed), His faithfulness (emunah), His wisdom, and His justice. These psalms remind us that the righteous flourish by remaining rooted in God, that His wisdom is beyond our understanding, and that He sees every act of evil. While human injustice may seem to prevail for a time, God will one day make every wrong right. He is the righteous King, and His people remain His treasured inheritance.

Finally, Psalm 95 calls God's people to joyful worship by celebrating His greatness as Creator and King. Yet the psalm ends with a sober reminder from Israel's history: worship is more than singing. Hearts that truly know God respond with obedience. Looking back at Israel's failures encourages us to trust God's voice today.

Throughout these psalms, we see a consistent invitation: remember who God is, trust Him through life's uncertainties, and live each day in light of His eternal kingdom.

In this episode, we tour Psalms 81–89 and discover a powerful thread running through these songs: God desires to bless His people, draw near to them, and remain faithful even when they fail.

Psalm 81 begins with joyful celebration of the Exodus, but God reminds Israel that blessing flows from listening to His voice. Rather than portraying God as harsh and eager to punish, these psalms repeatedly show Him ready to bless His people when they return to Him.

We then explore Psalms 82–83, where God is presented as Judge over every nation and every lesser spiritual power. Israel’s God is not merely a local deity; He is the Most High who rules over all.

Psalms 84–87 shift our attention to the beauty of God’s presence. The psalmists delight in the Tabernacle, celebrate Jerusalem, and use names such as Lord of Hosts and Most High to proclaim God’s greatness. Along the way, we see recurring themes of drawing near to God, righteousness, and God’s steadfast chesed love.

Psalm 86 gives us a beautiful model for prayer: “Guard my life, bring me joy, teach me, and give me an undivided heart.” It also looks forward to the day when all nations will worship the Lord.

Finally, we wrestle with Psalm 88, the darkest psalm in the Psalter and the only one that does not end with praise. Yet Psalm 89 immediately answers with worship and a reminder of God’s covenant with David. Even when God’s people wander, He promises that He will not remove His steadfast love.

As Book Three of the Psalms closes with a doxology, these songs leave us with a lasting hope: God remains faithful to His covenant, His kingdom, and His people.

In this episode, we continue our tour through Psalms 73–80, where the psalmists wrestle with one of life's hardest questions: Why do the wicked seem to prosper while God's people suffer? Again and again, these psalms remind us to shift our perspective and remember one unchanging truth—God is still King.

We begin with Psalm 73, where the psalmist honestly struggles with envy and discouragement before declaring, "But God..." We explore how God's presence becomes our true strength and examine connections between this psalm and the New Testament, including Jesus' words about the "pure in heart" and Paul's language of those who were once "far off" but have been brought near.

As we move through Psalms 74–76, we see God revealed as the righteous Judge of both Israel and the nations. Though evil may seem to triumph for a season, these psalms proclaim that God will judge wickedness, remain faithful to His covenant, and ultimately receive worship from all peoples. Along the way, we notice recurring images of shepherds and sheep, reminding us that God continually cares for and leads His people.

Psalms 77–80 repeatedly look back to Israel's history, especially the Exodus, to remind God's people of His faithfulness in the past. Even in seasons of doubt, when it feels as though God has forgotten His chesed—His steadfast covenant love—the psalmists choose to remember His mighty acts. We also discover why knowing the stories of Genesis through Samuel enriches our understanding of these songs, as the psalmists continually draw from Israel's history to strengthen hope in the present.

Finally, Psalm 78 challenges every generation to pass on the story of God's faithfulness. Parents are called to teach their children God's works and His instruction so that the next generation will place its hope in Him. The section concludes with Psalm 80, where Israel is pictured as God's carefully tended vine and the people cry out for a faithful leader—a hope that ultimately points us forward to the coming Son of Man.

Throughout these psalms, we see a consistent message: when life is confusing and evil seems to prevail, God's people remember who He is, what He has done, and confidently place their hope in the God who remains in control.

In this episode, we continue our tour through Psalms 63–72, discovering a recurring pattern that runs throughout these songs: life's circumstances may rise and fall, but God's people always have reasons to praise Him.

David begins in Psalm 63 by expressing a deep longing for God, reminding us that worship is not dependent on our circumstances but on the unchanging character of the One we worship. As we move through these psalms, we see God rewarding the righteous, actively working in His creation, and faithfully caring for His people. From the praise of all the earth in Psalm 66 to the missionary heart of Psalm 67, we are reminded that God's blessings are meant to display His glory among the nations.

We also explore the vivid imagery of Psalm 68 as God is portrayed as the victorious King taking His throne, and we see how these psalms continue to build on the larger story of Scripture. In Psalms 69 and 70, David honestly acknowledges his own sin and his need for God's help, while Psalm 71 provides a beautiful model for overcoming discouragement by remembering God's lifelong faithfulness and responding with praise.

Finally, we conclude with Psalm 72, which closes Book Two of the Psalms with a glorious vision of the righteous King whose reign extends to the ends of the earth. While originally connected to Solomon, this psalm ultimately points us to the greater King, the Messiah, whose kingdom will never end. The book closes with a doxology, reminding us that no matter how many hardships we encounter along the journey, praise belongs to God.

As you listen, notice how these psalms continually connect back to the larger story of the Old Testament. To help you recognize those connections, we've created a companion PDF that traces the story of the Old Testament and highlights the events and themes the psalmists often reference. It's available on our website for $1.99 and is a great resource for individuals and families who want to read the Psalms with greater context and confidence.

The Psalms often read like someone's personal prayer journal. They give us an honest look at what it means to follow God through seasons of fear, betrayal, discouragement, and hope. Again and again, the psalmists bring their deepest struggles before God, only to return to the unchanging truth of who He is.

In this episode, we journey through Psalms 52–62, beginning with the heartbreaking events behind Psalm 52 found in 1 Samuel 22. We contrast the actions of the foolish with the character of the righteous as Psalms 52 and 53 remind us that while people may reject God, He sees every action and will ultimately judge evil.

As we continue, we discover a repeated message throughout these psalms: God is still on His throne. Whether David is surrounded by enemies, betrayed by friends, or overwhelmed by fear, he continually returns to God as his refuge, deliverer, and King. We explore beautiful truths such as God recording every tear we shed (Psalm 56), inviting us to cast our burdens on Him (Psalm 55), and surrounding His people with His steadfast covenant love (chesed) even in the darkest moments.

Along the way, we revisit one of God's covenant names, "The Lord is My Banner," and see how His kingship and faithfulness echo the themes introduced earlier in the Psalms. We also consider the lasting heritage of those who fear the Lord and the hope of dwelling in God's presence under the reign of His King.

These psalms remind us that faith doesn't ignore hardship—it brings every hardship to God. No matter what we face, God remains strong, merciful, and faithful. He sees our tears, knows our circumstances, and calls us to trust Him, praise Him, and find our refuge in His steadfast love.

In this episode, we continue our tour through the Psalms, stopping to notice the themes, connections, and biblical images that prepare us for deeper study later. Rather than diving into every detail, we're acting as tour guides, pointing out the landmarks that help us understand the bigger picture of the Psalms.

We begin with Psalms 42 and 43, where the psalmist longs for the living God in a world filled with lifeless gods. As the psalmist wrestles with discouragement, he repeatedly finds hope in God's chesed—His steadfast, covenant love. We also discover why being in God's presence, at His house, was the source of true joy and delight for Israel.

Moving through Psalms 44–50, we see a recurring message emerge: the God of Israel is the true King over every nation. Though Israel was a small nation surrounded by powerful empires, these psalms remind God's people that their King reigns above every earthly ruler and every false god. Along the way, we explore the Messianic hope found in Psalm 45, the comforting promises of Psalm 46, and the majestic descriptions of God's power and kingship that fill Psalms 47–49.

Finally, Psalm 50 reminds us that God never desired sacrifices for their own sake. Sacrifices were never meant to "fix" sin; they were God's gracious means of restoring relationship with Him. That truth prepares us beautifully for Psalm 51, where we see that genuine repentance and God's mercy bring the forgiveness that every sinner needs.

Throughout these psalms, one message rises above the rest: our God is the living King. He reigns over every nation, remains faithful through His steadfast love, and continually invites His people into His presence.

In this episode, we explore several psalms that deepen our understanding of God's character and the life of faith. We begin with Psalm 17 and the Hebrew idiom "the apple of Your eye," discovering the powerful image David uses to describe God's protection and care for His people.

Next, we dive into Psalm 18, examining the rich imagery David uses to describe God as his rock, fortress, and deliverer. We also wrestle with David's claim to be "blameless" and see how it connects back to the righteous person described in Psalm 1.

We then look at Psalms 20 and 21 as a pair. Psalm 20 records the people's prayers and requests for the king, while Psalm 21 celebrates God's answer. Along the way, we see how Psalm 21 reaches beyond David and points us back to the Messianic hope introduced in Psalm 2.

Finally, we turn to Psalm 37, where the psalmist provides practical guidance for living faithfully in difficult times. Even when life is hard and the wicked seem to prosper, God's people are called to trust, delight, commit, wait, and rest in Him, knowing that He is their help and deliverer.

In this episode, we continue our journey through the Psalms by exploring Psalms 11, 12, 13, and 15. Together, these psalms wrestle with a question that believers have asked throughout history: What do we do when wickedness seems to be winning?

Psalm 11 contrasts the righteous and the wicked, reminding us that while evil may appear powerful, the righteous can find refuge in God. He sees what is happening and remains firmly on His throne.

That theme continues in Psalm 12 as the psalmist looks around and sees a world filled with deception, corruption, and unfaithfulness. Yet the psalm ends with hope as God promises to arise and act on behalf of those who are oppressed and vulnerable.

Psalm 13 brings us into a more personal struggle. The psalmist cries out, "How long?" as he waits for God to intervene. Many of us know what it feels like to wait for answers, relief, or justice. Yet even in the midst of uncertainty, the psalm concludes with a declaration of trust. The psalmist places his hope in God's chesed—His steadfast, covenant faithfulness and loyal love.

Finally, Psalm 15 paints a picture of the righteous life. Rather than simply defining righteousness as a belief, the psalm describes the actions and character of those who desire to walk closely with God. It challenges us to consider how our faith shapes the way we speak, act, and treat others.

As we study these psalms together, we see a recurring pattern: the reality of wickedness, the struggle of waiting, the faithfulness of God, and the call to live as His people. These ancient prayers remind us that even when life feels uncertain, our hope rests not in circumstances but in the steadfast love of God.

Parents: As you read these psalms with your children, ask them, "What do people do when they trust God?" Compare their answers with the descriptions found in Psalm 15 and talk together about what trusting God looks like in everyday life.

Psalms 1 and 2 serve as the introduction to the entire book of Psalms, giving readers the lens through which the rest of the collection should be understood.

In this episode, we explore the two paths presented in Psalm 1. The righteous delight in God's Torah, meditate on it day and night, and become like a fruitful tree planted by streams of water. In contrast, the wicked reject God's instruction and ultimately face judgment. Right from the opening psalm, readers are confronted with a choice: Which path will they follow?

Psalm 2 then shifts our attention from individuals to nations and kings. The rulers of the earth rebel against God and His purposes, believing they can throw off His authority. Yet God's response is clear: He has established His King, and no earthly power can overturn His plans. While human kingdoms rise and fall, God's King will ultimately reign overall.

Together, Psalms 1 and 2 provide the foundation for the entire book.

Parents, this summer we want to challenge you to read through the Psalms with your children. As you read, encourage them to listen for the vivid images and pictures found throughout the poems. Have them draw what they hear and then ask a simple question: "What does this teach us about God?" For an extra challenge, choose one psalm and memorize it together as a family. These ancient songs were meant to be remembered, prayed, and carried in the hearts of God's people.

Understanding the Old Testament Story (PDF Guide)

Before we dive into the Psalms, we need to understand how the original audience viewed Scripture.

The Bible was written in a different language, in a different land, during a different time period. Every time we open its pages, we are stepping into another culture. While God's Word speaks to us today, understanding its original context helps us hear it more clearly.

In this episode, we explore what the Bible is: a historical theological narrative. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture tells one unified story about God working through real people, real places, and real events to reveal who He is and what He is doing in the world.

We also examine how Jesus and the Jewish people organized and understood the Scriptures through the Tanakh—the Torah (Law), Nevi'im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (Writings). By looking at the structure of the Hebrew Bible, we discover how these three sections work together to tell one cohesive story and how that arrangement can deepen our understanding of books like Psalms.

Finally, we take a fast-paced journey through the Old Testament story. From creation and covenant, to the Exodus, the kingdom, exile, and the promises of restoration, we trace the unfolding story of the God of Israel and His commitment to dwell among His people. Along the way, we see why Israel longed for the coming Messiah and how the Writings—including Psalms—help God's people wrestle with suffering, faithfulness, wisdom, worship, and hope while waiting for God's promises to be fulfilled.

This episode lays the foundation for our Psalms series by helping us read Scripture as one unified story centered on God. Understanding that larger story will help us better understand where the Psalms fit, what questions they are addressing, and how they continue to shape the faith of God's people today.

Parents: As you listen, consider asking your children, "What do you think the Bible is about?" Their answer may open the door to conversations about how all of Scripture points to God's faithfulness and His desire to dwell with His people

In this episode Erika unpacks the title Holy One of Israel. Isaiah uses this title for God over and over in his book. From this prophet and other verses, we find this aspect of God as the God who is set apart from all other gods. There is no one or anything else like Him. His power is unlike any other god or power out there. He is El Elyon, God Most High.

But in being set apart as the God of Israel we are reminded that He has attached Himself to that land and her people. That means that land and her people are set apart. Then those who get grafted in are set apart. In being set apart, we are called to reflect Him then to the rest of the world.

YHWH Rohi means “The LORD is my Shepherd,” a name that reveals God’s personal, attentive care for His people. First expressed in Psalm 23, this title draws on David’s lived experience as a shepherd to illustrate how God leads, provides, protects, and restores. Throughout Scripture, God is consistently shown as the One who seeks His sheep, feeds them, and brings them safely home. This imagery ultimately finds its fulfillment in Jesus, who calls Himself the Good Shepherd and lays down His life for the sheep. To know YHWH Rohi is to live with deep trust, knowing we are guided, known, and never left alone.

In this episode Erika unpacks a name Adonai - Lord. Abraham first used it in Genesis 15:2 when Abraham reminds God he doesn't have an heir. From this story and other verses, we find this aspect of God as master and ruler. We are reminded we are called to obey our Master - much like Abraham did in Genesis 22 when God told him to sacrifice his only son. But we also see how God as master is "my master." There is a close personal connection that reminds us we are in a relationship that allows us to cry out to "my master" whenever we need Him.

In this episode, Erika and Veronica explore the powerful Hebrew name YHWH Nissi — “The Lord is My Banner,” first declared by Moses in Book of Exodus 17 after Israel’s battle with Amalek. They unpack how a “banner” in the ancient world was more than a flag—it was a rallying point, a source of identity, and a symbol of victory. Through the story of Moses, Aaron, and Hur, listeners see that Israel’s victory didn’t come from strength or strategy, but from dependence on God. The episode also traces how the idea of a “banner” runs throughout Scripture and ultimately points to Jesus, who was lifted up as our source of salvation and victory. This conversation invites listeners to consider what they are standing under and challenges them to live fully under God’s authority, identity, and victory.

In classic Erika style, she's back with another name of God that isn't a name. It's a title - God of Israel. She walks us through Scripture showing how this title is used as a way link God with Israel (the person and nation). This title is important though because it teaches us that God has linked Himself with a people group and He cannot turn His back on them.

In this episode, Erika and Veronica explore the Hebrew name YHWH Tzva’ot, often translated as “The Lord of Hosts” or “The Lord of Armies.” They unpack its meaning, showing how it refers not only to armies but also to angels, stars, and the forces of creation, emphasizing God’s absolute authority over both the visible and invisible worlds. Using examples from Hannah’s prayer, David and Goliath, and Elisha and the unseen armies, they illustrate how this name demonstrates God’s sovereignty, protection, and involvement in both cosmic and personal battles. Listeners will learn how understanding this name can give confidence in God’s power, remind us of His ultimate control, and deepen faith even in overwhelming situations. Parents will also discover ways to share this truth with their children, helping them trust the God who commands all creation.

In this episode, Erika and Veronica explore the Hebrew name of God El Shaddai, meaning “the sufficient one.” This word is a hard one to translate into English, but the common current thought is that God is sufficient - He is enough. Erika and Veronica look at passages that discuss God being enough. This name of God is used in positive and negative situations. Naomi seems to have a tone when she says the One "who is enough" brought her back emptyhanded. Find out what we can learn about God when we realize He is enough because maybe that's all we finite creatures can handle right now and one day we will see how much greater and bigger He is.

In this episode, Erika and Veronica explore the Hebrew name of God El Olam, meaning “Everlasting God.” First introduced in Genesis 21:33 when Abraham called on the Lord after establishing a covenant, this name points to a God whose existence and faithfulness extend beyond time itself. Scripture repeatedly reminds us that while human life is temporary, God remains constant “from everlasting to everlasting” (Psalm 90:2). El Olam reveals a God who is not limited by history, geography, or the rise and fall of nations, but who sovereignly rules over all time. Understanding this name helps us trust that the same God who was faithful to Abraham remains faithful to us today.

This week we’re exploring the Hebrew name for God Hamakom — “The Place.” At first glance it sounds unusual, but in Jewish tradition this was a reverent way to refer to God without speaking His name aloud. It’s a circumlocution, a respectful substitute, and yet everyone knew exactly who it meant.

Throughout Scripture, this title reminds us of something profound: God is not confined to a temple, a mountain, or a moment in history. He is present everywhere. There is no place we can go where He is absent, and no circumstance where He is unaware.

Hamakom teaches us that we cannot hide from God. We can rest that we are never alone no matter the season on life.

In this episode, we explore the Hebrew name עֶלְיוֹן (Elyon) — “the Most High” — and what it reveals about God’s authority and position in a world full of competing powers. From its first appearance in Genesis to its powerful use in the Psalms, Prophets, and even the New Testament, this title declares the unrivaled sovereignty of the covenant God. In the ancient world, height symbolized rule and supremacy, so calling the Lord “Most High” was a bold statement that no nation, ruler, or spiritual force outranks Him. Yet Scripture also pairs this majestic title with imagery of refuge, showing that the Most High is not distant, but a secure dwelling place for His people. When we understand the context of this name, we see that Elyon invites us to live with confidence, knowing that nothing rises above His steady and eternal reign.

Time to cross off an item on my (Veronica) bucket list! Ever since we started the podcast, it's been a dream of mine to get Lois Tverberg on the podcast.

We interviewed her over zoom and if you would rather watch us you can hope over to our YouTube channel.

In this conversation we talk about what started Lois down the road of the culture and Jewishness of Jesus. She shared her upcoming projects (updating Listening to the Language of the Bible coming out in Fall 2026 and her untitled book about reading the Bible with an insider coming out Fall 2027). She also listed books that are helpful when starting down the road of studying the culture of the Bible.

She shares her favorite verses for showing how knowing the culture and language can help us better understand the Bible.

If you purchase any of her books directly from her store, you get a discount for larger groups and Lois offers to do a zoom call with the group after they finish the study.

Here's a link to her store.

In this episode, we push back on the “go big or go home” mindset that often leaves us overwhelmed and ready to quit. Instead of trying to do everything at once, we talk about the power of starting small when it comes to studying the Bible. Veronica and Erika share simple, manageable steps that help build consistency without pressure. They also walk through several completely free tools that make Bible study accessible to anyone. For those ready to go a little deeper, they finish by recommending a few low-cost resources that are worth the investment.

We mention Lois Tverberg, Brad Young, Ray Vanderlaan, Rabbi Barney Kashdan, and Messianic Jewish Publishers.

Erika and Veronica explore the deeper purpose of obedience to God, especially when it feels like nothing is changing. We often assume that if we do the right thing, God will respond with visible results, but Scripture challenges that expectation. Looking at Moses and Pharaoh, we see that Pharaoh’s heart didn’t shift because of Moses’ words, things moved only according to God’s timing and plan. God could have accomplished everything without Moses, yet He still chose to involve him. So maybe obedience isn’t about outcomes at all, but about being willing to say yes to God and remain faithful, regardless of the results we see.

This episode continues our conversation with Shannon Popkin as we explore how Bible stories can be used to teach lessons and deepen meaningful discussion. Shannon walks us through a simple, repeatable method that begins by telling the story and then inviting others to retell it in their own words. From there, we ask thoughtful questions that help uncover what the story reveals about God and about humanity. The conversation moves from understanding the text to living it out — considering how we can embrace the truths Scripture teaches while rejecting the lies our culture often promotes. Ultimately, this approach shows how stories invite conversation and create space for faith to grow through dialogue.

This week on the podcast, we explore why the Bible is filled with stories and how those stories function as powerful teaching tools. In an ancient, oral culture, stories weren’t just entertainment — they were carefully crafted containers of truth meant to be remembered, repeated, and lived out. Rather than simply telling lessons, biblical narratives show us who God is by inviting us into real human experiences where He actively engages the story. When we read Scripture this way, we begin to see how God teaches through relationships, choices, and consequences. These same stories then become bridges we can use to connect with others and share our faith in meaningful, relatable ways.

We've come to the end of the Deuteronomy and the entire Torah. We've walked with Moses from before his birth right until his death. We've seen his high points and low points. We've seen his wide range of emotions for his people.

What lessons do these final chapters have in store? Where does this leave Israel as they stand on the threshold of a new journey?

Moses is (finally) wrapping up his speech to the people. As he's preparing to transfer leadership to Joshua, he's giving his final pleas to the people to hold fast to God.

He paints a powerful image of God to remind the people that when they fail - and they will - that God will bring them back and defeat their enemies.

In this episode, we follow Moses as he shifts from recounting laws and history to revealing the deeper moral and spiritual meaning behind Israel’s journey. He explores why people so often fail to recognize God’s presence, how gratitude fades, and why following the stubbornness of the heart can endanger an entire community. Moses warns of the consequences of turning away from God, yet offers hope through repentance, restoration, and God’s promise to “circumcise the heart.” He reminds the people that the Torah is not distant or impossible, but close, understandable, and meant to be lived. The message culminates in a powerful choice set before every generation: life or death, blessing or curse—choose life.

We finish the final laws of Deuteronomy and come back to where we started. Moses is looking at all the people and encouraging them to stay united even after he's gone.

We also look at how God's character and attributes are seen through His laws. He displays compassion while being just. He shows His justice while showing mercy. Studying these laws have given us a better view of who God is.

Erika brings up the discussion of why and critical thinking. Why does a good God give this law? How does this law bring life? Why did God choose the Levites? Why are the expectations about the priesthood clearly laid out? Why is God specific in some areas, but ambiguous in other areas? Why are there cities of refuge? Why does the person who killed someone get a chance to run to the city of refuge?

Deuteronomy 18 and 19 helps answer those questions. What are your why questions after reading these chapters? Jump on our social media and let us know.

In chapter one we learned that Lady Samaria and Lady Jerusalem are on trial for a breach in the covenant.

In chapter two Micah is bringing specific examples of the breach. However, this chapter will also end the first cycle of doom and hope.

Once again we referenced episode 92 (1 Kings 21 - Ahab and Jezebel), episode 148 (an overview of all the prophets), and episode 168 (the Davidic covenant).

Time to set the stage for the book of Micah. But it's not a stage. It's a courtroom. Who's on trial? What's the crime? What is Micah's role?

Bryan VanHaitsma is back and diving into the book of Micah. On this episode he's going to lay the foundation for the entire book as well as walk us through the first chapter.

Bryan is the digital media director for Revive Our Hearts. He studied at Hope College in Michigan and Jerusalem University College in Israel. Leviticus is a book about the common and uncommon, the pure and the impure. It's important to understand those distinctions and how they work.

We discuss the levels of holiness that exist in animals, places, and people and how that affects our abilities to approach God. A priest's job is to bring the worshipper closer to God.

Christ, Messiah, Anointed One, and King are all the same role. Erika shows us what expectations were attached to "The King" so when people in the New Testament asked "Are you The King?" we can understand what they were expecting would happen.

We are continuing to show themes or threads that run through the Bible. Erika is explaining who a prophet is and what his (or her) job description would be.

God said there would be a prophet like Moses and then Scripture runs through a list of men who were not as great as Moses. Matthew then presents Jesus in a way that is similar to Mose to show Jesus is the prophet greater than Moses.

In preparation for Christmas, we brought Bryan VanHaitsma back into the studio (Erika's basement) to unpack that word "Nazarene."

The words spoken in Matthew 2:23 sound like they should be from the Old Testament yet they aren't. Was Matthew adding to Scripture then when he said this? Why did Matthew say it then?

It's time to release our own unique study of the Old Testament!! Erika is going to unpack, put up shelves, and then fill those shelves so you can understand the Old Testament in way that the original reader (or hearer) understood.

Understanding the Old Testament better will help the New Testament come alive with more color and meaning than you realized was in there.

In this episode she lays the foundation and puts up 3 big shelves - Torah, Nevi'im, and Ketuvim. Over the next few weeks she will explain what goes on those shelves, which as a group are called the Tanak.

Erika mentioned The Apocalyptic Gospel podcast in this episode. We are just beginning to explore and listen to those episodes.

We are coming to the end of Abraham's life, and he finally gets his first piece of land.  Then the story begins to shift to Isaac and Rebekah, but first the author of Genesis lays a foundation of who Rebekah is and her similarities to Abraham.  In Genesis we've laid foundations while we've watched Abraham's faith and now we move onto his family.

In this episode Veronica and Erika discuss Abraham, Hagar and Sarah.  Have you ever been like Sarah and looked at the situation and could not see a reasonable, explainable solution?  What did you do then?  What did Sarah do?  What lessons can we learn from that?

Have you ever been desperate like Hagar?  How did God show up?  What hope can you share with others about that time?

Finally after waiting 24 years, Abraham is still waiting for a son.  What did God do for Abraham so he could know God was trustworthy?

In this episode, Veronica breaks down how God is already fulfilling His covenant to Abraham in Genesis 14.  But one part of that covenant hasn't been fulfilled so Abraham questions God in chapter 15 and God gives Abraham the strongest oath possible to make sure Abraham knows it will happen.

The library books mentioned in this episode are both books are by Gail Jarrow. The first is American Murderer:  The Parasite that Haunted the South.  The other is Bood and Germs: The Civil War Battle Against Wounds and Disease.

Erika's husband gave her an incredible image of God's pursuit of evil one day and she wanted to share it.

But we need to look at this picture of God using both hands.  On the one hand one day God will pursue evil in the way Erika talked about.  But like Veronica pointed out, on the other hand God is pursuing us in a different way right now.

Surprisingly though it's not Paul who leads the way and opens the door for the Gentiles. Peter, one of the pillars of the early church, must be the one who brings the Gentiles in. For the rest of Acts and most of the New Testament, we will read the of the struggle of how Jews and Gentiles are to live in the kingdom.

What thoughts would have gone through your head when the Tabernacle was completed and God's presence filled it?
What is the cliff hanger that ends the book Exodus? How does Leviticus answer that cliff hanger?

This week Veronica and Erika discuss Moses' interaction with God following the golden calf incident.  Since the beginning of the book, Moses has grown in his boldness with God.   We can't see what Moses saw, but we can hear what he heard.

Questions to consider:
Do you think those verses are out of chronological order?
What is the purpose of the laws given to the people?
Is your view of God the same as Exodus 34:6-7?
Do you think God changes His mind?

Veronica and Erika examine God's response to the people sin with the golden calf. They talk about the significance of God's word choice as well as Moses's shrewd and bold conversation with God. Then they look at Moses's word choice when he asks the people to help deal with the sin of the golden calf.

Questions to Consider:
What was the significance of God's word choice?

How have you seen Moses' relationship with God change since the burning bush?

Why was it important for God to deal quickly and descively with the sin of the golden calf?

In this episode Veronica and Erika dig into Exodus 24 and God making a covenant with Moses and the people. They examine the boundaries God placed around the mountain and how you see that repeated in Tabernacle and Temple. They also explain table fellowship, Moses and Joshua's relationship, and the significance of two tablets.

Veronica mentions Lois Tverberg. Her website is www.ourrabbi.jesus.com - Our Rabbi Jesus
Veronica also mentioned Ray Vander Laan.

Questions to Consider:
How did the boundaries around the mountain relate to the restrictions and blessings for the individual?

What did you learn about table fellowship? How could this understanding of table fellowship affect the way you view meals or communion?

What connections do we see here that relate back to Creation?

What is the significance of Moses having two tablets and what does that tell us about Moses' relationship with God and God's view of Moses?

In this episode Veronica and Erika lay down basic principles you can use to help you as you read through these chapters. They do not go in depth into each particular instance, but instead give a viewpoint of what the culture might have been like back then. They continue to come back to the idea that we are to love God and love our neighbor. They hit on topics like slavery and justice.

Erika begins this episode summarizing the story by Patricia Polacco titled “The Bee Tree.” Veronica also used commentary from First Fruits of Zion.

Questions to consider:
Did this background help bring context to these commands?

What commands are you still struggling with?

Can you think of other commands in Deuteronomy or Leviticus that would help with these chapters in Exodus?

Veronica and Erika continue the discussion of the remaining 10 Commandments in this episode. They expand all of these commands while showing how a society that fulfill each of these commands would lead to a redeemed world.

Questions to consider:

What does honoring your parents look like to you?

Did you think of something else that you shouldn’t steal that Veronica and Erika didn’t list?

How would society look if we obeyed at least two of these commands?

Which one of these commands produced a bigger discussion among your friends or family?

Veronica and Erika slow down and spend the entire podcast discussing Exodus 20:1-11.  Using Dennis Prager's book as a guide, they show how the commands are bigger and more in depth than normally taught.

Questions to Consider:

Why does God give commands?

What are things that can be an idol based on their definition?

How are you doing "carrying" God's Name as you go about your day?  Are you honoring His name as you carry it?

How do you honor the Sabbath?

In this episode Veronica and Erika slow down their discussion as they begin a new portion of the book of Exodus. They are calling this part "God covenants." They define a covenant and share the multiple images God uses to describe His relationship with Israel.

Questions to Consider:

What images can you think of that God uses to define His relationship with Israel? Why is it necessary to have more than one image?

What images does God use to describe Himself?

What is the significance of Israel being a kingdom of priests?

The Israelites were commanded to wash their clothes in preparation of Exodus 20. What are ways you show your honor to God and to His Word?

How many times does Moses go up and down the mountain?

God has redeemed His people but now Erika and Veronica point out that these chapters are all about the Israelites learning to know who God is. These chapters give us insight into how intimately God is involved in their lives and what kind of care they can expect from Him. Erika read Hosea 11:1-4.

You can find more about the Amalekites in Deuteronomy 25:17-19, I Samuel 15:1-9 and 30:1-2 and the book of Esther.

Questions to consider:

What lessons did the Israelites learn in these chapters?

What are your expectations of God?

What can we learn about God from these chapters?

How can you see Gentiles represented in these chapters?

What lessons can we learn from Moses and Jethro?

In this episode Veronica and Erika talk wrap-up the storyline of God redeeming His people found in Exodus 13-15. The story isn't complete until the enemy, Pharaoh and his army, are finally conquered never to return again. What is Israel's response seeing their enemy vanquished - joyful worship and praise of their God, their Redeemer.

Questions to consider:

What events in your life do you plan to pass on to your children so they remember?

God built natural reminders into their routine to remind them of His redemption. What reminders do you have in your life to help you remember?

What do we learn about God from these chapters?

What images do you see in chapter 15?

In this episode Erika and Veronica discuss Exodus 10-12. They talk about the importance of repetition in Scripture, the death of the firstborn, and Passover.

Questions to consider are:

What is the point of repetition in Scripture?

What blessings do people still get even if they reject God?

What do we learn about God from these three chapters?

Why is it important Moses and Aaron had nothing to do with the last plague?

In this episode Veronica and Erika start exploring the ten plagues. They answer questions like:
How long do you think the ten plagues lasted?
Have you ever heard hundreds of frogs croaking in their ponds? Did that make you stop and think what it would have been like for the people during that portion of the plague?
Why is it important to know the frogs didn't just hop away, but died right where they were?

Veronica quoted from Lois Tverberg and Erika gave us this quote from the Book of Wisdom:
Book of Wisdom 11:15-16 “In return for their foolish and wicked thoughts, which led them astray to worship irrational serpents and worthless animals, thou didst send upon them a multitude of irrational creatures to punish them, that they might learn that one is punished by the very things by which he sins.” (quoted in White, Brazos, 80)

Erika took the story a little deeper and pondered the question of what lie have you been holding to that needs the light of truth shed on it?

Why do you think God took time and used "presentation" in story? How does this help us know who God is and how He works?

Veronica and Erika pick up the discussion with Moses and God at the beginning of chapter six. God tells Moses that Abraham, Issac and Jacob knew God by His name El Shaddai (think memory and covenant), but Moses and Egypt are about to know God by a different name. We will see how God reveals Himself and this new name over the next few chapters.

After this conversation between Moses and God is what appears to be a random break in thought - a genealogy. Erika explains how the original readers would view this genealogy, how it provides a link to the past and the future, and why genealogies offer hope.

What does it mean Pharaoh hardens his heart and God hardens Pharaoh's heart? Have you ever wondered if that was fair? Erika and Veronica tackle that subject in this podcast today.

We mention Lois Tverberg. Her website is www.ourrabbijesus.com.

In this episode Veronica and Erika dive into chapters four and five.

What lessons can we learn from Moses and the signs God gives him to take to Egypt? How was God testing Moses' faith in preparation for the things to come?

When Moses asked God questions, God responded one way; yet how did God respond when Moses offered an excuse? What does this teach us about how we interact with God?

What is the point of the story at the end of chapter 4? Why was this included in the Bible?

As Moses enters Pharaoh's presence in chapter 5, what is the posturing that is going on between Moses and Pharaoh? We know Moses and Pharaoh will continue to interact over the next few chapters and things do not go smoothly for Moses or the Israelites. What hope does this offer to us today? Erika referenced Gladys Aylward and the hardships she endured trying to get to China. What encouragement can we find from her life?

This week Veronica and Erika deal with some of the bigger topics in chapters 1-3. Pharaoh is determined to remove the “swarm” of Israelites but the midwives thwart his plans with their lies. God doesn’t show up into the story until chapter 3 when Moses is over 40 years old, but we see that God was working behind the scenes. How do you see God working behind the scenes in the story? How do you see God working behind the scenes in your life?

Memory comes into play as Moses encounters God at the burning bush. God’s response to Moses’ doubts was not to point to how great Moses is, but to who God is and His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. How did God work in Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob’s lives that might be helpful to Moses? If God came to you, what past stories could He point to to show His faithfulness in your life?

Veronica mentions the book “The Winged Watchman” by Hilda Van Stockum and Erika quotes Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

Veronica and Erika introduce the book of Exodus and the first 8 verses in this episode. Since there are forty chapters in Exodus, they are not going to dive into every detail. Instead their goal is to add to the discussion by focusing on different thoughts and ideas that aren’t normally covered.

One way they are doing that is looking at the book in three parts: God redeems, God makes a covenant and God dwells. This will be the framework that each episode is built upon and woven into those three actions is memory. Remembering the past will affect the present which ultimately affects the future. As you read through Scripture yourself, see if you can identify one of those three actions.

As you listen, Veronica and Erika will address the questions:
Who is the hero of the book?
What promises were left at the end of Genesis that need to be addressed in Exodus?
What connections do you see between Creation and the book of Exodus?
What happens when the world acknowledges God’s blessing on His people?
What happens when the fear of “what if” replaces the reality of “what is.”

In this episode, Veronica and Erika examine the idioms and exaggerations that are used in Scripture. Every culture has their own sayings, therefore so does first century Israel.  Just like you might be confused when visiting that new culture and hearing those expressions, we can walk away from Scripture missing the meaning or being confused if we don't recognize what is going on.

How does Proverbs 22:9 relate to Matthew 6:22-23 and what is the good eye and the bad eye? What does Jesus mean when He says abolish and fulfill the Torah in Matthew 5:17-19?  Then in Matthew 5:29-30 did Jesus mean to encourage His followers to cut off their hands or pluck out their eyes? What does it mean to hate your family according to Luke 14:26? We will examine each of those questions in this podcast.

We specifically referenced Dwight a Pryor and his "Behold the Man: Discovering Our Hebrew Lord, the Historical Jesus of Nazareth." You can find that study here

We also used Lois Tverberg, First Fruits of Zion, and Brad Young in our studies.

Veronica and Erika continue their discussion about life in first century Israel and how Scripture influenced daily life.  In this episode they talk about "keshers," hyper links in the text, that relate back to another verse.  Erika showed how Jesus used the word "love" and pulled from two different Old Testament verses to answer which is the greatest commandment.  Veronica pointed out that on the cross Jesus quotes Psalm 22:1. We also said Luke 23:29-30 connects back to Hosea 10:12.

Erika shares an exciting connection found in Matthew 22:15 with the Herodians and paying taxes which relates back to Genesis 1:27.  Jesus gave a powerful lesson to the people standing front of Him but also to us today.

Did you know not all Jews in first century Israel believed the same thing?  Did you know there were branches or sects within Judaism?  As you read the Gospels or the book of Acts, have you paid attention to how Jesus or Paul interact with certain groups?  Both Jesus and Paul knew how to use their differing beliefs to their advantage.  Do you know which group Paul belonged to and what they believed?  Do you know which group is considered the heroes of Judaism and why?

Veronica and Erika talk about the 4 main groups we see in Scripture.  They are the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Essenes, and the zealots.

For the summer Veronica and Erika are discussing the lifestyle of the average Jew in first century Israel. For most of this podcast, we will be explaining children's education.

Starting at age five, boys and girls begin to memorize and study Scripture. Listen to the podcast to find out which book children started memorizing. Even before children started learning the Scriptures though, parents would give the child a Torah scroll with honey on it. They wanted the child's first impression to be that Scripture is sweet. What are you teaching the children in your life about the study of Scripture?

From ages five to ten boys and girls would memorize the first five books of the Old Testament. Then from ages ten to thirteen they would memorize the rest of the Old Testament as well as the discussions and debates that surrounded those books. They were trained how to think and ask questions about the Scripture. They were given a chance to wrestle with the truths found there. This education did not just happen inside school walls though. From morning till night while they worked together, they were reviewing the Scriptures. How would reviewing Scripture affect your attitude and activity?

At age thirteen most boys go to work with dad while the girls learn how to run a household from their mothers. Erika points out how women were elevated in that society because of all the roles she filled.

We left you with two takeaways from today's show. First you have the ability to influence those around you. Don't underestimate your ability to be light. Second, we need to know our Scripture more and regularly be wrestling with it with those around us. Ask those hard questions and see what your friends and family have to say.

While we didn't specifically mention any authors who we've learned from, our information came from Dwight A. Pryor, Lois Tverberg, Brad Young, Kenneth Bailey, First Fruits of Zion, and Jerusalem University College in Israel.

Erika shares her take away lessons from the book of Ruth.

Boaz was the go'el - the kinsman redeemer and he desired to restore what rightfully belonged to the owner.  What does that teach us?  How did he do that?  What did he restore?

Who showed chesed throughout the story and what does that mean for us today?

How do God centered people affect God and His willingness to show up?

When we left off, Naomi and Ruth were alone in Bethlehem.  Naomi had a new burden placed on her and she was letting everyone know about her bitterness.  As chapter 2 starts off, Ruth puts her promise into action.  She goes out to the fields in order to provide for Naomi.  Erika explains how her "happening happened" to find her working in Boaz's field.  Does Ruth know what God told the Israelites in Deuteronomy 24:19-22?  How does that help the poor in that society?

In today's episode Erika and Veronica discuss Boaz's potential age and Ruth's potential royal background.  We also see who shows chesed in this chapter.  We end the chapter with Naomi having a slight spark of hope again.

In this episode Erika provides the background info we need to study the book of Ruth.  She talks about the common lens people often use when studying Ruth and then shares the lens we want to use as we study this book.

She also lays out the time period of the judges that provide the background for the story as well as who the Moabites are.  Leading up to the book of Ruth, the Moabites are found in Genesis 19 and Numbers 22-25.  Phinehas' reward and blessing is also found Psalm 106:30-31.

In this episode, Erika and I unpack some details behind Passover.  We talk about why people celebrate Passover, what cup is used for communion,  why they don't use lamb, and what did Jesus mean when He stated He won't drink it again until His father's kingdom.

Scripture referenced is Exodus 6:6-7 and the Last Supper is in Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22, and John 13.

Have you read this parable before and wondered what it means?  What do you know about hell or heaven?  Have you considered what happens to us after we die?  Does the Old Testament talk about resurrection or the life to come?  What is Abraham's Bosom and where did that terminology come from?

Join Veronica and Erika as they work their way through the parable as they cover these questions and more.  We highly recommend First Fruits of Zion as a resource for your studies.

Join with us as we go through Luke 19 and the parable of the 10 minas. What's the context we are missing? What's the connection with Herod the Great and Archelaus his son? Who's the King in this parable going on a long journey? Why does it matter how the servants live in the absence of their Master?

There is so much more to this parable than we normally understand. Jesus is giving a clear warning to His followers that how they live matters. And how they live now can one day bring great reward in eternity.

We also learn that our view of God matters. Whether we see God as a loving Father or vindictive King will influence the way we live and our eternal reward as well.

Once again in this parable we see that Jesus cares about how His disciples live. And those who live for the King will get a reward. While those who fight against Him are punished.

We recently talked about wrestling with God in prayer.  What does this parable teach us about God - the person we are wrestling with?  What do we need to remember that this parable teaches us?

We introduce our first parable study with the Good Samaritan.

Veronica and Erika consider why the expert in the law approached Jesus and how Jesus and the expert discussed the topic with responding with another question instead of an answer.

As they look at the three characters in the parable, they consider the laws on being clean and unclean and how that would affect the actions of the priest and levite.

Scriptures referenced are Leviticus 19, Numbers 18 and 19, and Luke 10:25-37.  Authors referenced are Brad Young and Kenneth Bailey.

Veronica and Erika unpack the details behind the Christmas story.  In this podcast we will be discussing the tradition of three wisemen visiting Joseph and Mary as well as their country of origin.  We all celebrate Christmas on December 25, but is that the exact date of Jesus birth?  Is it even in December or winter at all?  Erika suggests it may have occurred on the feast of Sukkot (aka Feast of Weeks, Feast of Booths, Feast of Tabernacles).  Many nativity scenes have Jesus born in a stable or cave.  How close to reality is that picture?  Erika explains what houses were like in first century Israel and shows how the Greek word for "inn" found in Luke 10:25-37 is not the same word used in the story of Jesus' birth.  Finally we discuss what life would have been like for Mary as a betrothed and pregnant woman.  What were Joseph's options?  What did his actions say about his character?

Erika lays a foundation for the Mosaic Covenant.  Using Exodus 2:23-25, she reminds us that God "knew" and remembered what what happening with Abraham's descendants, who have become so numerous they are called a swarm (seen in the Hebrew in Exodus 1:7).  God promised Abraham that Israel would be used to bless the nations in Genesis 12:1-3. Miraculously He rescues and redeems His people out of Egypt.  That event is so important it is alluded to in every book in the Old Testament.

"Remembering" in Scripture is a call to action.

Israel is called God's inheritance in Deuteronomy 9:26, 29 and 32:9.  Erika misspoke when she said Psalm 32:12...it's actually Psalm 33:12.

Veronica and Erika start with a brief discussion on women in the Bible...maybe this is a topic for the future.

Erika then digs into Genesis 8:20 - 9:17 as she lays out the stipulations of the covenant - stipulations for both man and God.  There are more layers to the rainbow than just the happy reminder God will never flood the entire earth again.  We have a responsibility to deal with the evil in our own lives. She recited Psalm 130.
