Michael is a California transplant living in the Pacific Northwest with his wife Lauren, their son Cove, and daughter Cambria. God first drew us into international missions in 2012, and we have served short and mid-term in Asia and the Balkans, moving to Kosovo in 2019. Our heart is to see the young people of Kosovo come to know the hope and transformation that is found in Jesus.
In 2021, we opened a coffee shop/community center in the heart of Prishtinë, Kosovo. Every step was so clearly provided for by God’s lavish grace, and the partnership and prayers of the family of God. Through this welcoming space, the Kosovar staff and American volunteers of our team engage in meaningful relationships and conversations about the gospel. When we look around that space, seeing table after table of students engaging with our team in genuine friendship, community, and eternal conversations, we are filled with joy and thankfulness.

Most Christians experience doubt from time to time, but for some the struggle with intrusive thoughts that breed uncertainty can become all-consuming. Some prefer topical sermons, because just like topical ointments, they go right to where the itch is…
Others prefer a more narrative approach, since life is one big unfolding story, shouldn’t our sermons include stories, or even be framed as one big story itself?
Maybe the autobiographical yet informative Ted talk is the way forward?
The real question is “is God’s Word powerful?” And since the answer is yes, we who have opportunity to speak about it in public need only to discover what model of preaching allows the Word to speak the most plainly, most directly – or to put it another way, what form of preaching unleashes God’s Word?
Since the Bible is God’s very words, and have within themselves His very authority – I believe that expository preaching should be the most consistent offering that we offer unto God and to His people
What is expository preaching?
Quite simply it is exposing what is inside the pages of the Bible to the hearers, for all to understand believe and apply.
think of a report who does an expose on a politician or a corporation. She does the work of discovering what is hidden and what previously is unknown, and then she exposes it to the watching world. “I want to tell you the true story of what you may only know the surface of”
Not to imply that the scriptures are unknowable, and locked to all but a few experts. It isn’t that the main message of scripture is inaccessible, but simple that it is un-accessed by many.
(Another example of exposition … maybe the mohler quote?)
So what the expositors does, week after week, is go deep into the pages, the themes, the paragraphs and the words of scripture.
But what is also happening – is that the expositor is going deep into the Word, and the Word is going deep into the heart of the expositor.
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12–13, ESV)
Naked and exposed. The expositor is also the exposed one!
Such is the power of God’s wordand that is why expository preaching is powerfulbecause it is putting people into direct contact with God’s Word.
And what does it do? It exposes us. It lays us bare!τραχηλίζωtrachēlizō
This is the only time this word is used in the whole Bible.
Its used in extra biblical literature to describe when a defendant at a trial is made to face their accusers : a knife was put to their chin so that they would have to meet their gaze, they couldn’t look down in shame, or they couldn’t look away as a way of escaping the consequence of what they did, or the severity of the situation that they are in.
It is also used to describe grave face-to-face confrontations of two wrestlers who meet in the middle of the mat. they would grab each other by the throat to start their competition.
This is what God’s Word does to us! Now- granted this is very confrontational, and nearly violent language, but I want to highlight it to us right now at the start of this training event. We will be speaking about techniques and approaches for us to expose the meaning of ancient passages and how to help other people grasp the truths… but make no mistake… this truth is grasping you by the throat! You are being held in its gaze! You are laid bare before it. The expositor first and foremost must be exposed.
And – after that takes place in our personal study, then we are ready for public proclamation.
Since we are convinced of the inherit power in God’s Word, and as we shape our addresses to be plainly, simply, exposing one section at a time; it should be a humble yet confident act on our part.
Since this is God’s very Word – we’re not up there to speculate, we’re not surmising, we’re not commenting, we’re not sharing : we have something to proclaim!
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God;whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:10–11, ESV)
No more sharing – it is time to proclaim
I flew over here from Ireland yesterday. There is a world of difference between the safety announcements at the beginning of a flight, and then what would happen if there is severe turbulence or if there is an actual emergency in the air. Instructions will be given, and everyone should listen, because this is crucial now.
My friends, we are alive in crucial times – no more messing about. There is a peripheral of frivolity that still exists, but more and more people are coming to realise that the times are getting serious, the stakes are getting higher
And lets not kid ourselves, your sermon isn’t going to save the world – but as we arrange opportunities for small or large groups of people to have a living, face to face, knife to the throat, hand to the neck confrontation with the living God; THAT is going to be what changes lives, and from a changed life, who knows what the ripple effect could be from there?

Casting Vision for the Church
Casting a vision” for a church is the process of defining and communicating a clear and compelling picture of what the church could and should be in the future. It involves sharing a vision of what the church can achieve, what it stands for, and where it is heading. It is a critical process for churches because it helps to provide direction, focus, and motivation for the congregation.
One of the most significant benefits of casting a vision for a church is that it provides a clear sense of direction and purpose. It helps the members of the church understand where they are heading and why they are doing what they do. This clarity can be motivating and inspiring, helping to unite the congregation around a shared vision and a common goal. Todd helps us think through this process together.
Todd was born in Stuttgart Arkansas in January 1970. His parents are Phyllis & Allen Peebles. As a child, he was privileged to be an Army Brat. This meant he got to live in some different places. His family lived in Heidelberg Germany, Clarksville Tennessee, Gauiter Mississippi and Crowville Louisiana.
Todd Graduated from High School in Crowville Louisiana in May of 1988. In 1990, he began to pursue his childhood dream of working in Law Enforcement. He Served the Stuttgart Arkansas Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department in Greenville Mississippi.
In 1995 Todd answered the call to vocational ministry on his life. He began serving in Youth Ministry. In 1996, Fellowship Baptist Church in Texarkana Arkansas Licensed him to the ministry. In 1998, Todd answered the call to serve His first church as Senior Pastor. In May of 1999, Shady Grove Baptist Church of Sparkman Arkansas ordained him to the Gospel Ministry.
In October of 2004, Todd and Shelly (Pease) Peebles were married. They now have four wonderful children, one boy and three girls. Todd has served as Pastor at churches in Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and now serving as pastor in Kansas.
Todd graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity (MDiv) and a concentration in Expository Preaching in December 2011. Todd is currently working on a Doctor of Ministry also from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Todd is passionate about expository preaching, serving in the local church, and helping others with their calling in ministry as opportunities present themselves.

As Christians, it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day demands of life and forget the deeper meanings behind Jesus' teachings. Aaron dives deep into the idea of heavenly treasures, explaining what they are, what they are not, and how we can pursue them.
To begin, Aaron delves into the definition of heavenly treasures. He points out that while the Bible can be difficult to understand at times, there are many concepts that we grow up hearing but may not fully grasp. He goes on to explain that when we think of treasures, we often imagine gold, jewels, and other material possessions. However, heavenly treasures are something entirely different.
Heavenly treasures are gained in the pursuit and practice of the things that matter most to God, such as the way we love and serve others, the way we obey God's commands, and the way we share the good news of Jesus with those around us. This pursuit is not about earning brownie points, but rather it is about affecting eternity and building the Kingdom of God.
The episode also delves into the heart conditions that lead us to pursue earthly treasures like success, wealth, fame, and popularity. We discuss how we can easily make idols out of our desires, and how these treasures can become our masters. By contrast, pursuing heavenly treasures involves redirecting our desires towards something that is life-giving and freeing. The episode concludes with a discussion of where our hearts are directed and how pursuing treasures in heaven ultimately leads us to a deeper relationship with Christ.
One of the most beautiful things about storing up treasures in heaven is that we can experience a taste of heaven right now. Rather than simply hoarding wealth and not touching it until some far-off distant future, we can experience the eternal riches of heaven right now if we abide in Christ through His Spirit. Aaron emphasizes that our treasures lead us somewhere, and that the most important aspect of the concept of treasures in Heaven is the idea that where our treasure is, our heart will be also.
To truly thrive, we must declare Jesus as the King of our hearts and redirect our desires towards the eternal.

At the heart of servanthood is the concept of selflessness, which requires us to put the needs of others before our own. As followers of Christ, we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves, and love is the biggest motivator for serving others.
In today’s world, we are constantly busy with various commitments and responsibilities, and it’s easy to get caught up in our own needs and wants. However, we need to remember that as Christians, we are called to a different standard. We are called to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.
One of the biggest challenges of servanthood is finding the time to serve. We often feel like we are too busy to serve, and it requires other sacrifices just to make time for it. But the reality is that serving others is not just an obligation or duty, but it’s an opportunity to participate in the work that God is doing in the world.
However, we must also be careful not to fall into the trap of chronic busyness or overload, where we feel overwhelmed by our commitments and responsibilities. This can lead to stress, burnout, fatigue, and other negative effects on our mental and physical health.
So how do we balance the demands of our busy lives with the call to serve others? It all comes down to our priorities. We need to make intentional choices about how we use our time and rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to direct our actions and decisions.
The key is to prioritize our relationship with God and make time to abide in Christ. We cannot pour out into others if we are not first filled up ourselves. By seeking God’s presence and guidance in our lives, we can gain a sense of perspective and clarity that allows us to make better choices about how we use our time.
At the same time, we need to be careful not to put too much pressure on ourselves to save the world. We cannot save anyone; only Jesus can. Our responsibility is to serve others with a joyful heart and to be faithful to the small acts of obedience that God calls us to.
In doing so, we can be involved in laying the building bricks of the kingdom of God that will last into eternity. So let us all seek to be servants of Christ, putting the needs of others before our own and trusting in God’s provision and guidance in our lives. Thank you for listening to the GoodLion podcast.

Jeremy gives advice on preaching through the messages from Jesus in Revelation 2-3, and reminds us of the pastoral implications of this section – both to our own hearts and the hearts of our congregations.

Aaron frames this episode as an experience of”secondhand seminary”, a gateway into learning and diving deeper into one’s faith. Aaron explains that historically, this concept has helped him grow in his walk with Christ through listening to friends and mentors who attended seminary share the things they were learning: “It would inspire me to go read some of the books that they were reading or listen to some of the lectures from theologians that they were benefiting from. I called it second-hand seminary, and it massively helped me grow as a young pastor.”
Aaron and his classmates, Johnny Golightly, Jon Markey, and Austin Palmer, are part of a cohort led by Professor Gerry Breshears, whom Aaron describes as “one of the best theological minds of our time! Gerry is a jedi master… a founding board member of the Bible Project and a longtime theology professor at Western seminar… despite his vast knowledge, he’s a humble and intensely caring prof who pushes his students to dive deeper and fall more in love with Jesus!”
Although Aaron and his classmates had hoped to make this a multiple part series, they were not able to due to their busy schedules. Despite this, we believe that this episode still contains a lot of great conversation that will give listeners an opportunity to be a fly on the wall listening in to a conversation between seminary students sharing ideas about the faith, the character of God, and the way of Jesus.

While pastoral work may seem like a public job in this age of celebrity pastors, Nate argues that embracing the anonymous aspects of this work is a better path, and essential for the pastor’s soul.
Using Paul’s image of the farmer and the field, Nate highlights that the pastor, like a farmer, is a mere worker employed by God. The only one in the equation that matters is God, who gives the growth. This means that good pastoral work has a tinge of anonymity, where pastors do work that is often unseen and are there for the service of the field. They cannot produce fruit on their own.
Throughout the episode, Aaron and Nate discuss various topics, including the comparison game that can steal a pastor’s joy, and the importance of faithfulness. They also delve into the idea that growth of depth is more valuable than numerical growth, and that workaholism can be harmful to the pastor’s soul.
The pressure that millennial pastors feel to live up to the older generations, and the pitfalls of pastors building a social media platform for themselves, are also explored. Nate shares his views on why pastors should consider the anonymous aspects of their work as a healthy antidote to the temptations and pressures that come with the public nature of pastoral work.
We believe this episode will encourage pastors who are working hard but feeling unseen. No matter the size of your church or the length of your time in ministry, pastoral work is often challenging and can feel lonely. It is easy to get caught up in the comparison game, social media pressure, and the drive for numerical growth. He is considered a major figure among the Church Fathers of the Latin Church during the Patristic Period. His notable works include “The City of God,” “On Christian Doctrine,” and “Confessions.”
Shane Angland and Ian Clary join Mike to discuss the influence of Austine on their personal lives and ministries, and also how J.I. Packer used Augustine’s commentary on John to help restore the struggling faith of one of Ian’s mentors.
While Augustine is commonly recognized as a philosopher, theologian and preacher, Shane and Ian argue that it is also important to take note of his role as a pastor and carer of souls.
Shane Angland is currently a teaching elder at Ennis Evangelical Church, Ireland. He has served as a missionary in Ukraine and is a Th.M. graduate from Dallas Theological Seminary with an emphasis in historical theology.
Dr. Ian Clary is a native of Canada; most recently he lived in Toronto, Ontario, where he served as a minister at West Toronto Baptist Church. He taught at various institutions in Canada, including Redeemer University College and Heritage College and he continues to lecture at Munster Bible College in Cork, Ireland.
Ian’s doctoral work looked at issues dealing with the Christian interpretation of history with a particular focus on early-modern British evangelicalism. His master’s work looked at the reception history of patristics into the post-Reformation period with a focus on Christology.

Taylor launched BibleEquipping to continue the work she had been doing for more than a decade training women to study and teach the Bible, and to do it with people she loved. Today she enjoys teaching, leading, and coaching she gets to do through BibleEquipping. Still, she stays awake at night dreaming and praying for new ways to equip women to serve the Church. And, let’s be real, sometimes dreaming about flowers to plant in her garden.
Previously, Taylor launched and directed the Women’s Training Network for The Gospel Coalition and co-founded The Verity Fellowship for Western Seminary. Her experience includes living overseas, training women internationally, and working in the local church. She cares deeply about supporting and encouraging Bible teachers so they serve their local churches and communities even better equipped.
She received an MA in Biblical and Theological Studies and Doctor of Ministry, focused in exposition of the Old Testament, from Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon, where she lives with her family. She also loves good chocolate and a great cup of tea! They got her through school.
Taylor spends a good amount of time studying and writing about the Minor Prophets (particularly the 7th century ones), yet you’ll often hear her pondering about healthy use of power, chronic illness, and everyday discipleship and evangelism. She also loves teaching and talking about homiletics (hence the DMin about it). She serves at her local church on the sermon review team and teaching in the women’s ministry.

Please bear with me (and feel free to reach out if you have something to add to the discussion!)
That said, I truly agree with the words of Jon Tyson:
“The real conspiracy is satanic and it’s goal is to get you to focus on ‘global meta whatevers’ that you can do almost nothing about and neglect the place of prayer, the word, and sacrificial love of neighbor.”
I encourage all listeners, no matter their political lens, to really consider what Benjamin is saying, as a pastor and brother in Christ on the ground floor of this war. He offers a lot of wisdom for us to consider, and has proven his focus is on the advances of the light of the Gospel into the darkest places.

Broadgrace meets in the village of Coltishall in Norfolk, England.

That’s what Matt Overton does as both the long snapper for the Los Angeles Chargers and as a real estate agent with clients in both Indianapolis and Nashville. A nine-year NFL veteran, Overton has bounced around with a few teams, spending most of his career with the Indianapolis Colts, where he was a Pro Bowl selection in 2013.
During his career, he’s spent a lot of seasons as a free agent, not sure if he’d get the chance to keep playing. He took the entire 2019 season off when no calls came in, and he used that time to finish his schooling become a real estate agent. But all the while, he kept working out and preparing as if a call would come. You don’t have to get ready if you stay ready, he said.
Out of that motto birthed his brand, “Stay Ready,” which serves as both a motivation to him and others but also a chance for him to reflect on and share his faith in Jesus. He’s got a great story and a great perspective on how he lets God use him and his platform. She sent her colleague Emeline Horton Cleveland to Europe as one of the earliest female students in obstetrics and gynecology. When Emeline returned, she and Ann worked together at the women’s hospital and medical school. These women were such close associates and friends that they are buried next to each other!
