In this episode, we dive into the state of the stock market and explore these two types of investors.

"Bull markets are born on pessimism, grown on skepticism, mature on optimism, and die on Euphoria." - Sir John Templeton
Retail investors (you) are becoming more bullish and eager to invest, whereas institutional investors (experts) still express pessimism.
In this episode, we discuss the performance of different sectors, such as energy, consumer staples, technology, and discretionary, and how contrarian investing (going against the herd) can lead to better returns. Additionally, we'll touch upon the growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI) stocks and how we've already invested in companies involved in AI for several years.
Remember, it's important to have a consistent investment process to own quality businesses and stay invested for long-term success.

At Iron Gate, we do everything we can to put the probabilities of making money for you on our side. Our process for buying the best businesses in the world helps put those probabilities in our favor. A few of the businesses that we love are still down 20 – 40% from all-time highs. However, (and here’s where it’s important to understand), those businesses are more valuable to today than when their stock was trading higher.Huh? How does that even make sense? In this episode we discuss two main topics:- What is the probability that 2023 will be a positive year?- How can a business (stock) be worth more today than when the stock was trading higher? After answering those questions, we then address the 25% guy. It’s hard, especially after a bad 2022, to continue to be the 25% guy. (Listen to find out who the 25% guy is.)Here’s to wise investing,Brett and Brian
In our recent conversations with clients, a question keeps coming up, “When should I reduce the risk in my portfolio?”. 2022 was a brutal bear market so the question makes sense. Every asset class was down, most in double digits. People are tired and frustrated with volatility. In today’s episode we answer the question, “When should someone reduce “risk” in their portfolio?”. We also pose the questions: - Do people understand what risk really is?- Is a less volatile portfolio really less risky?- What role does someone’s goals play in this whole question? If there was ever a time to put a plan in place, it's now! Here’s to wise investing,Brett Pattison and Brian Hunsaker
Following a weekend of a few banks failing, we think it’s important to inform you of what happened and its impact on you. There has been some wild speculation that has caused unnecessary fear across the country. In a special Sunday night podcast, we answer the following questions: - What happened to these few banks that failed? - Is this another 2008 style bank bailout? - What does it mean to you, as a depositor, at a bank? - What would happen if TD Ameritrade, Charles Schwab, or any other brokerage failed? Would you lose all your money? We hope this podcast educates, informs, and most of all, reduces any fear you may have with this weekend’s craziness. Here’s to wise investing,Brett, Brian, and Spencer
Thanks to the Fed (and inflation), interest rates have moved higher and faster than any other time in history. It truly has been a historic rise. Here’s where we stand now – •2-year treasury is now at 5.05% (1 year ago it was 1.68%)•10-year treasury is now at 3.88% (1 year ago it was 1.94%)•a 30-year mortgage is now 6.8% (1 year ago it was 3.85%) As interest rates have risen, investors are now considering bonds, CD’s, and treasuries more than they have in the last 10 years. But is that a good idea? In this episode, Brett and Brian each take a stance on buying these investments. Their stances may surprise you. So are bonds, CD’s, or treasuries right for you? We provide information necessary to make the best decision possible. Here’s to wise investing, Brett Pattison & Brian Hunsaker
Peter Lynch, one of the greatest investors in the last 50 years, averaged 29.2% per year from 1977-1990. It's one of the best investing streaks in history. In his writing, Lynch gives 10 rules for investing that are critical in compounding wealth over time. Lynch's transparency in his approach (and success) are why so many people try to mimic how he invested. In this episode, we share, define, and discuss these rules. Here's a few examples:- Ignore economic forecasts- Buy companies with competitive advantages- Let your winners runSome of these rules are easier said than done, which is why Iron Gate Global is here to keep you on track.Buckle up! We cover a lot of important ground in this episode. Here's to wise investing,Brett Pattison and Brian Hunsaker
What would you do if you saw a crowd of people running away from something? You'd probably start running away yourself. Fear and survival take over and you take off! This common response in our brain, called the amygdala, is how we're hardwired to survive a crazy world. But is it always for the best?In this episode, we talk about how this herd mentality can lead you off a financial cliff. Compounding your wealth is to do the exact opposite of how your brain is hardwired. Listen as we discuss how to combat this response to help benefit you.As Sir John Templeton said, "Bull markets are born on pessimism...". Here's to wise investing,Brett Pattison and Brian Hunsaker
Peter Lynch, one of the best investors to live, averaged over 29% a year from 1977 – 1990. His track record is as good as there is for a 13-year time frame. Lynch was asked, “what’s the single most important key to investing in stocks?” His response . . . well, that’s what we talk about in today’s podcast. Consider the following hypothetical returns: Microsoft + 628%American Express +955% If we told you that you could experience those returns (hypothetically), but you had to follow Lynch’s “key to investing in stocks”, would you do it? (We hope you are saying yes!) For those wanting to compound your wealth, this is a MUST. We hope you enjoy it. Here’s to wise investing,Brett Pattison and Brian Hunsaker

As Halloween approaches, nothing has been scarier this year than the stock, bond, housing, and any other market. As scary and dark as it has been in 2022, there's a pretty good opportunity in front of you if you just turn on the lights.
In this episode, Brian and Brett discuss how to prepare for the next bull market during a bear market.

What an exhausting year! The market can't seem to get any momentum. Everyone you talk to is pessimistic and afraid of the future. Pessimism is as high as it's been in history (or since they started tracking it).
Here's a few reasons why the pessimism is so high.
So, with all of that happening in the world right now, what is the market going to do?
In this episode of our podcast, we discuss our forecast for the future.

There are many ways to invest. From day trading to swing trading to buying a stock because of a pattern you see on a chart.
In this podcast, we discuss the evolution of Iron Gate's investing process. We share with you how we started out investing using popular methodologies, to how we invest now.
For the first time in a podcast, we share our four criteria that makes a good investment AND reduces risk. Some of these criteria are common sense and some take hours and hours (hundreds of hours in some cases) to figure out.
We hope this clarifies how Iron Gate not only invests, but how we are different than 90% of other firms.

Like a parent telling a young child to not touch the hot pan on the stove, there are certain things you should NOT do in a bear market. It’s important for us, as fiduciaries, to discuss these things so YOU don’t get burned.
Fear (not a hot pan) is the main culprit that tempts far too many people to these two big mistakes. The ugly headlines, the balance of your accounts going the wrong direction, and the media’s attempt to scare you to death, certainly do not help in trying to avoid making mistakes.
Last week’s podcast discussed the first big mistake. Today we reiterate that important concept and discuss big mistake #2.
We hope it helps calm nerves and most importantly, gives you a game plan for navigating the turbulent times.

The million-dollar question (or maybe desire) that many investors have is "Has the market bottomed?" or "Can you time the market bottom?".
In today’s podcast, we discuss these very questions. Can it be done? And if it can be done, what difference would it make to my returns/wealth?
We are living through the market's worst start to a year since 1970. Investors are not feeling great. This podcast will hopefully shed some light on whether bear markets even matter over time.

What a brutal year. The market is in a bear market, inflation is raging, and a recession is likely on its way (if not already here). No good news to be found anywhere.
So, what’s next?
In today’s podcast we look at the last three times in history that we’ve had – High inflation Rising interest rates A bear market
In our research we noticed an interesting correlation between inflation and the bottom of bear markets. This correlation is something to keep your eye on moving forward.
We also discuss the duration and damage of bear markets and what investors should be doing while it’s happening. Finally, we share the good news with you, which is, all bear markets are temporary, and there is a new bull market on the other side.

Humans are hard wired a certain way. The way our mind works allows us to laugh, love, have joy, experience pain, live, fight to live, and much more.
The problem with the brain is that it’s wired in a way that interferes with investing and making money. Often times our brain tells us exactly the opposite of what we should be doing.
In today’s podcast we discuss how your brain is your enemy. We share how making and losing money makes you feel and how you need to completely ignore those feelings.
The more you understand about what lies in between your ears, the more profitable you can become.

The stock market has been a dumpster fire. The bond market, which is supposed to be safe, has been even worse. In one of the first times in recent memory, there is not an asset class that has been good for your money.
So, what should you be doing right now?
Today we held a special podcast where we discuss the state of the market including bonds, stocks, inflation, interest rates, and more. We also discuss exactly what you should be doing right now. (Hint: Warren Buffett is doing this exact thing right now.)
We realize that none of us like to see the market fall in the way that is has fallen. It’s painful and emotional. We hope this podcast helps calm your nerves and keeps you focused on the future.

Inflation at 8.53% Fed tightening/raising interest rates Ukraine/Russian War China's lockdown Mid-term elections coming up Covid aftermath
(We're exhausted just making that list!!)
So, with all that going on, should we just get out of the market and sit this one out?

"What is the market going to do in 2022?"
This is the question that everyone asks themselves (and us), at the beginning of each new year.
The past five years the S&P 500 has averaged 18.5%. Can it continue to go higher? It has to go down eventually, or does it?
The other big question on people's minds comes from the circus tent known as Washington D.C. What will happen with the Build Back legislation? Will my taxes go up? What should I do about it?
Brett and Spencer answer all these questions and more in the first podcast of this new year.

Unfortunately, the mistakes that most investors make have nothing to do with market knowledge, strategy, or picking stocks. The biggest mistakes are made because of emotion and fear.

There are THREE big questions on the minds of almost everyone we’ve been talking to:
1) “Should I own Bitcoin/Dogecoin?”
2) “With the market up 87% from the March 2020 lows, should I take “risk” off the table and be more conservative?”
3) “Inflation is out of control! Is it going to hurt the market and my investment?”
Sit back and get the straight answers to these questions and more!!

In today’s special podcast, we welcome back our good friend, Jed DeVries.
Jed joined us 14 months ago in the midst of panic, hardship, and "hell" as we discussed the COVID panic.
Today, we look back at that time so that we can look forward.
We discuss the Iron Gate process, including the actions we took for our clients. Jed shares his thoughts on how he's been able to accomplish his goals to become financially free.
Most importantly, Jed reminds us that greatness is accomplished after the hardship.
We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.

In the world of financial advice, there’s an important element that everyone should understand: What a “fiduciary” is and why you should only invest with a firm that is a fiduciary.
So, what does this mean? A fiduciary is someone that legally has to bring your own interest before their own. Iron Gate Global is a fiduciary firm.
What else does it mean? It means telling our clients what they NEED to hear not what they WANT to hear.
In today’s podcast, we tell the truth. We tell people what they need to hear not necessarily what they want to hear. Our focus is investing for the next 5 – 10 years and what asset classes are poised to help our clients accomplish their financial goals.
If you’re a professor teaching modern portfolio theory (or if you think bonds are conservative) you will absolutely want to listen to today’s podcast.

It’s important from time to time to take a step back and ask yourself the question, “Am I a successful investor?”.
For most, this is a hard question to answer. Too many people are sucked into the wrong ideas when gauging success. Does success come if you’re making money vs losing money? Is it making 10% per year or 3% per year? Is it being in dogecoin when others aren’t?
In today’s podcast, Brett, Brian, and Spencer discuss three steps EVERY investor must go through to answer the question, “Am I a successful investor?”.
These THREE steps are the foundation for investing and they are what we help our clients with every day. As you listen, write these steps down and see if you can answer the question, “Am I a successful investor?”.

One year ago this week was one of the best buying opportunities the market has had since the financial crisis. It’s been one year since the market hit a low on March 23, 2020.
We all have experienced a roller coaster ride in the last year. A pandemic, an election, riots, and a stock market that is up 75% since hitting its low.
In the last year we have also watched investors make a lot of mistakes. In today’s podcast we talk about those mistakes and how to avoid them in the future.
Most importantly, we discuss the biggest mistakes investors are currently making. How the fear of missing out (FOMO) could cause the next market correction and how investors are like a dog chasing its own tail.
It’s one of those podcasts that will help you come back to the foundational principles of building wealth.

One of our favorite investors, Sir John Templeton said the following – “Bull markets are born on pessimism, grow on skepticism, mature on optimism and die on euphoria.”
There is no doubt that there are certain areas of the market that are in the “euphoric” state right now. EV, penny stocks, and SPAC’s are a few of them.
In today’s podcast we discuss some of them including one in detail, SPAC’s. What is a SPAC? Why are they so popular and why do we think they are in a bubble right now?
We also discuss Warren Buffett’s annual letter to shareholders and what we learned from reading it.

So much has been made lately about the disadvantages that the individual investor has vs. the hedge fund. The GameStop fiasco has people talking about this more than ever before, even Congress is discussing it in D.C.
In today’s podcast we discuss this disadvantage in detail. Brian and Brett discuss that it’s actually not a disadvantage at all! If you understand the probabilities of making money in the market, the individual investor has more of an advantage today than ever before in history.
The only problem is that people can’t take advantage of the only advantage they have. Why is this the case and how do people overcome it? That’s what today’s podcast is all about.

Here are a couple of our favorite statements that we’re hearing a lot of lately:
“We’ve gone too far too fast.” “This market is in a bubble, it has to fall!” “The market can’t keep going up day after day.” Some of those statements might be true . . . but they might not be true either. The one thing the market will do is keep you guessing.
In today’s podcast we address all of these statements and how an investor should navigate the current market. We also discuss the risk and reward of a correction in the market and how an investor should be thinking about their own wealth.
We hope you enjoy today’s podcast.

Today’s stock market, in some ways, reminds us of the late '90s and in other ways, it’s completely different.
The similarity between now and then, as we discuss in the podcast, is the euphoria that exists in some pockets of the market. The people invested in these pockets are starting to make some loud noise. They remind us of the Hare in Aesop’s famous fable.
In today’s podcast, we discuss how important it is to have a process in place for investing, the importance of discipline to that process. We also discuss that pesky Hare and the consistent Tortoise and what we can learn from them with regards to your investments.

"The Four Most Dangerous Words in Investing Are: This Time It's Different." Sir John Templeton
With the 2020 Presidential Election only TWO weeks away, we have heard the phrase "This Time It's Different". With this phrase, comes uncertainty regarding politics, the future of our country, and the economy. However, one thing is absolutely certain, market VOLATILITY.
In today's podcast, Brett and Brian discuss the difference between RISK(permanent loss of capital) and VOLATILITY (being forced to sell assets at a lower price than you originally started)AND what YOU can do to defend yourself against both.

Bonds are known to be less risky than equities, however, this is not true. If you look at the long-term, as we do, bonds are a riskier investment and the odds of losing money are far greater in bonds than stocks. Do we own bonds, yes, but it is for a particular reason.

Almost everyone we hear on T.V. and talk to believes the market is going to fall.
So, should we wait for the market to bottom before buying more stocks?
That is the topic of the day. After a 30+% positive market move, should we wait to put more money to work?
In today’s podcast we talk about timing the market, the risk/reward of putting more money to work right now, and much more (including Michael Jordan destroying our dreams!).

“The four most dangerous words in investing are: this time is different.” – Sir John Templeton
The Great Depression. The 9/11 terrorist attack. The Financial Crisis . . . and now the Coronavirus pandemic.
In the midst of this current pandemic, as businesses fail and unemployment heads to 20%, it’s easy to say “this time is different”.
In today’s podcast we explain why this time won’t be any different than the bear markets that preceded this one.

The bear market hit hard and fast. On March 23rd the S&P 500 was down 37%. It did that in only 23 days. The investor fear gauge hit the magical number of one, which is as fearful as it gets. The economy shut down, and is still shut down.
Since that day on March 23rd, the S&P 500 has rocketed up 27.50%. We are now down only -13.50% on the year. With a shutdown economy we are only down -13.50%.
The question remains – Is now still a good time to invest? Is the market going to fall again? Should we wait for the dust to settle to invest more cash?
Those are the questions discussed in today’s podcast. We hope you enjoy.

The market has fallen 30% from its highs in only 27 days. The country is shutting down and isolating itself.
The pain, fear, and emotions that our country is going through is real and hard. We all know that investing is a marathon not a sprint. But the pain and fear within that marathon has us all asking…
What do we do now?
Should we sell our stocks? Should we buy gold? Should we quit? Should we keep going? In today’s podcast we are joined by our friend and colleague Jed DeVries. He shares his insights of going through difficult times during real ultra-marathons.
The heartache, the fear, the wanting to quit, the actual quitting and the actual finishing and joy that comes from it are the topics of the today’s podcast.
If there was a podcast to listen to at a perfect time to listen to it, it is today’s. Let Jed’s experiences motivate you to know there is joy in the journey, despite the pain we feel along the way.
Please take the time out of your day to listen to this important podcast.

arlier this week we sent out a letter to our clients discussing the market chaos that is occurring. Well, the chaos has continued! The market as it stands today is down 20% off its highs.
Warren Buffett famously said, “it wise to be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.”
Fear right now in the market is approaching 2008 levels. The CNN Fear and Greed index (shown below) is at a level of “extreme fear.” So how do you actually go about doing what Warren Buffett famously said?
In today’s podcast we address the fear that many are feeling right now. We address the idea of moving into cash and selling your stocks and why that strategy isn’t a successful one.
We then discuss several things that people should consider right now, including refinancing a mortgage, reviewing and adjusting a 401k, putting cash to work, and much more.
We hope this information is useful and helps you understand that volatility in the market provides an opportunity.

The market is down 8% since hitting all-time highs on February 19th. The past two days have been volatile to say the least.

In today’s podcast we discuss the Coronavirus, it’s impact, and what investors should do.
When the market is trading at all-time highs, everyone is cheering for a market correction (pullback) so they can buy great businesses at cheaper prices. Then when that correction comes, the reaction emotionally is very, very different.

With the market making all time highs seemingly every week, we’ve been asked, “When is the market going to crash?” Our immediate answer focuses on two things –
In this week’s podcast we discuss how excesses in the market (also known as euphoria) might be the one thing to cause the next downturn.
We look back at history, the late 90’s and 2007 – 2008 to discuss what happened when excesses caused the market to crash and how indexing certainly was not the best answer.
We discuss not only the excesses, but more importantly, What did we do about it back then? What are we going to do about it now?

Finally. A death that should have occurred a long time ago has finally come.
Bank of America recently put the final nail in the coffin of one of the most popular strategies taught and implemented over the last 50 years. Odds are you’ve probably at some point in your life had this portfolio strategy implemented for you, or maybe you still do?
For some reason academia and the majority of portfolio managers loved this strategy. At Iron Gate, we’ve never subscribed to the philosophy and are glad that people are realizing it. (In fact, we’re celebrating its death!)
In today’s podcast we discuss why this portfolio became popular and why it doesn’t work for most people. We also discuss our philosophy which has more to do with YOU than academia or popularity.

When fear increases in the market, the common response for investors is to sell and buy investments that are "low risk."
Typically when that "fear" increases around the market, people make horrible decisions.

Lastly, we talk about the danger in following the herd.

For many of you, contributing to an IRA yearly is a challenge. If you make too much money the tax advantage of contributing to an IRA disappears. You’re taxed when you put it in and then again when you take it out.
It seems as though when you make too much money the door is closed to planning for retirement in a tax advantaged way . . . or is it?
In today’s podcast we discussed a government legal loop hole. It’s called a backdoor ROTH IRA. It allows you, if done correctly, to save for retirement and avoid the taxes on the backend.
Spencer Nelson, our resident financial planning guru, explains the whole process in this week’s podcast.
We have been setting up these backdoor ROTH IRA’s for many of our clients. If you’re wondering if it’s right for you, email Spencer at spencer@igga.com.

Recessions. Inverted yield curves. Insider selling. The reasons for cashing out of all your investments seems to be growing day by day. Fear in the market seems to be increasing while confidence heads the opposite direction. So what should you do?
In today's podcast we discuss how to invest amid the uncertainty. The underlying foundation of any investment should be made based upon the goals for the money. We call it an investment policy or strategy.
The problem - not enough people know what their strategy is so they get lost in the day to day news of the market. Well that ends today!

One of the great ironies of investing is how people view risk. As clients initially come to us, their greatest fear is losing the money they have worked their entire lives to save.
Now don’t get us wrong, that is a very important concern. However, after we begin working with and educating people, it becomes clear what the most important risk actually is.
In today’s podcast we address the biggest risk facing anyone. THIS RISK, if not addressed properly, can rob you blind without you even knowing it. THIS RISK is something that not enough people address because it's different than the standard academic answer for portfolio management.
We discuss THIS RISK, how to escape it, the role of volatility, dividends, interest rates and a whole lot more.

An indicator for predicting recessions set-off a red light today and it's 9 for 9 in it's predictions since 1957.
In today's podcast we discuss that indicator (the yield curve) and what that may mean for the market and your portfolio. The good news is that if history holds true, there could be some nice upside for your portfolio.

The market has been crazy as of late. The market has been down 5+% over the last week. Trade wars, interest rates, an earnings recession, Presidential tweets, and much more are causing concern in the market.

In today's podcast we answer that very question. We share our process for determining what is a buy and what is a sell. We address the disciplined process that Iron Gate has been using for 20 years.

How many times has the market ended the year up between 8-10% (the average) on December 31st?
We reference average returns over the life of an investment, but the reality is that most of the time, the market closes out the year somewhere outside that average range. There’s a lot more variety in that year-end figure than 8-10%. We talk about why – and how that’s a GOOD thing – in this week’s podcast.
