Brad Luttrell

Restless Native is hosted by Brad Luttrell, the Co-Founder of the GoWild app. We’re finding interesting stories and people in conservation, fitness, music, food, hunting, humanity, fishing, entrepreneurship and the environment. While the topics always vary, these people have one thing in common: They’re ever restless. Never comfortable. They’re Restless Natives.

LAUNCHING SOON: [UNCENSORED] by GoWild

Team GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. [UNCENSORED] is a behind the scenes look at our adventures, failures, wins, embarrassing moments at trade shows, hilarious tales from the warehouse, and a good rant or three about the most recent tyranny from the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.

Today’s show is salty. Especially salty. Because today we have one of the Salt Strong brothers on to talk about going niche. It’s all going to make sense soon, and I’ll let Joe explain exactly what he’s built, but I wanted to have Joe on because what he’s done is really impressive. So many people have dreams of jumping into the hunting or fishing industry, but don’t know how. Joe and his brother were well established in their careers, but they decided to walk away from it. We’re going to talk about how they made the jump, their upbringing, why they don’t work with advertisers, how they built a paid community of thousands of people, creating content, and more. Joe’s a great dude, and they are a tremendous resource for information. If you’re into what Joe’s talking about, check them out.Salt Strong website

Today, we have another outdoor entrepreneur on the show, and she’s going to highlight just what it’s taken to get her company off the ground. Murielle Gaither is the founder and CEO of Venku. I’m going to leave it to her to talk about what Venku is, but let’s just say she’s building a way for people to engage with the outdoors, and what I like most about Murielle’s company is that it involves lowering the barrier. I’ve talked so much about this over the years of hosting this podcast. I don’t think we need more ways to find expert level information. I think we need more people finding ways to get people involved in fishing and especially hunting for the first time. As they find their passion, they’ll become experts over time.Venku.com

I have the first comedian I’ve ever had on Restless Native. He also happens to be a fly fisherman, wildlife biologist, and an educator. Eeland Stribling is a really great guy. I kept seeing this guy pop up in various content from brands, and someone on my team recommended him for my other show, Gearbox Talk. We did that, and I asked him to sit down for this show as well just to unveil a little bit about his journey into the space. We talk about his comedy, fishing and his grandfather, who actually has been a really important role model for Eeland. I think this show is a fun change of pace, and yet another I’m proud to add to the long lineup of fascinating guests for Restless Native. Watch Eeland on Gearbox Talk

I’m a sucker for a good entrepreneurial story. Toss in trying to build a company in the outdoor space? Now I’m hooked. Today’s guest is someone I met through the industry when he was first getting his company off the ground. Standing in a loud honky tonk dive bar in Nashville Tennessee, he outlined his plans to build something that would allow people to trade outdoor experiences. It sounded kinda crazy. Which in Startupland, is how you know you’re on the right path. Slade Johnston is the founder of Trips4Trade. Today, he’s going to tell us not only what it is, but the moments and milestones he’s had along the way, the hardest part of his journey, an entrepreneur he looks up to and why he’s so passionate about R3.Trip4Trade

Memorial Day is coming, which will officially kick off summer for most Americans. Millions of people will spend their summer camping and hiking. But today’s guest sees a gap in one audience. Earl B. Hunter, Jr. founded Black Folks Camp Too to focus on opening up the outdoors to more people, specifically, the black community. I saw a news story about Earl and his mission last summer, and he was kind enough to respond to my cold inquiry about his mission. He was recently a guest on my other show, Gearbox Talk, to talk about hiking gear. And on this episode, we’re going to talk about the challenges Earl saw, and how he’s conquering those challenges with Black Folks Camp Too.Website: BlackFolksCampToo.com

Sometimes I feel oversaturated with news about hunter numbers. They’re up, they’re down. And then back up again. Now Outdoor Life says we have no clue what they are. Whatever they are or aren’t, I think we need to do better. Even if hunting spiked last year, we have to realize there is some bubble happening here. Of course people hunted more last year, it was one of the only things you could do. How many times have I said that we were losing hunters to youth sports? And Netflix? Well youth sports were shut down last year, and there’s only so many rounds of your favorite show you can watch before you have to move or become part of the couch. There are some really interesting plays happening in the outdoor space. You have people like AJ De Rosa, Nic De Castro, Slade Johnston, Murielle Gaither, Adam Gifford, and my team at GoWild so many others, who are making strong tech plays to get more people outside. I hope that together, we’re building a strong enough community to avoid losing hunters when this bubble bursts. And just like the ammo and gun shortage, it will burst. We’ll either be prepared for it, and have handled it well. Or it’ll be 2016 over again, when the demand for guns slumped, a time the gun industry calls the Trump Slump due to it coming along with Trump’s win of the election, and then firearms companies started getting their butts handed to them. Today's guest is another guy who deserves to be among that list of people I mentioned. It’s Mahting Putellis, the founder of Hunt to Eat. He’s going to talk about hunter recruitment and retention today. And what he and his team are doing to help more people get outside. HunttoEat.com

Most of you probably know The Hunting Public, but do you know their story? Do you know why they decided to found their business? Do you really understand what they’re trying to do?I’ve really come to respect these guys, because I have first hand seen how they’re running not only their content, but their business. They’re not pay to play, swapping sponsors out nonstop and grossly creating sponsored kills. They are themselves all the time. That’s something to admire. We’re going to talk about all of that and talk about how Aaron feels about the culture of hunting. If you haven’t seen it, Aaron was recently on my other show, Gearbox Talk, too. Today’s guest is one you’ve probably heard from many times over. But as always, I focused on asking a different set of questions and digging deep. This Restless Native is with the one and only, Remi Warren. You’ve heard Remi talk about stalking, hunting, archery and much more. But today we’re talking about community, societal expectations, hunting as a right, and how to avoid censorship. Remi is a TV show host, writer, photographer, videographer and just one of the best content creators in the hunting industry. I wanted to hear about his journey, where he started, and he delivers some fantastic advice on how to build your own portfolio and highlights how he just fought his way into the industry with brute force. It’s a great interview.Restless Native is brought to you by GoWildGearJunkie named GoWild the best social app for hunters. However well you think you know firearms or history, or firearms history, today’s guest has you beat. I mean, probably. Today I have Logan Metesh on the show, and he has a degree in, is trained in, and makes his living in history. No, not like, he used to. That’s what he does for a living—talk about history. He found a way to tie his passion for American history back to the firearms industry, and today we’re talking about just how he did that, some amazing pieces he has seen, and how he is likely one of the only people to know what it was like to sit in the seat where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Wow. We also have some discussion around American’s seeming inability to have discussion. I ask Logan the big question of, is history doomed to repeat itself?Stick around for the answer. High Caliber History WebsiteHigh Caliber History Podcasthttps://youtu.be/Nq_i909s7fs

Laura Zerra commanded attention and built a strong fan following on her multiple tours through the Discovery Channel show, Naked and Afraid. Now if you haven’t seen this show, you might think it’s not for real survivalist. And you, good, sir or madam, would be wrong. Laura Zerra is legit. Her journey to become a survivalist is very interesting. She’s the polar opposite of a prepper. Let’s get that straight right now. Laura is the anti prepper, in many ways. Preppers need their things. They hoard, and much of their plans require their equipment. You could literally drive Laura off into a desert with no water or food, and my money would be on her vs. the vultures. This episode is sponsored by HuntStandUse code GoWild to get your discount at the HuntStand website.

I went down to Texas and found somebody who’s not afraid to speak his mind. OK, some of you are probably thinking that’s a lot of Texans. I agree. Texas is an amazing place. We’re talking about if social media is good for hunting, discussing this messed up year and talking about creating content while staying true to yourself. Enjoy this episode with Cable Smith from the Lone Star Outdoor Show.

Today I have arguably one of the biggest names to ever guest the Restless Native mic.Tim Kennedy joins the show in honor of Veteran’s Day. The Green Beret serves with the Special Forces Group, has been a sniper, sniper instructor, combatives instructor and was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom among other deployments. Tim also had a 15 year MMA career. Today, among a few other companies, he owns Sheep Dog Response, which teaches tactical training. And relevant to some of you, he’s been a frequent guest of Joe Rogan. We get in the weeds quick. I'm asking tough questions, such as are we as American civilians getting soft? We talk about this wild year. We get Tim’s take on civil unrest in our country. And we’ll talk about the war on our lifestyle as outdoorsmen and firearms enthusiasts. It’s a great discussion and a very informed one. Tim is a very well read, cultured, and well traveled person. It may surprise some of you to know that I grapple with social media’s impact on society, as well as the individual. When we first started building GoWild, I read books on the psychology of building a product that was sticky, as the industry calls it. I researched how to make an addictive product. That’s what the Silicon Valley road map for building an app said to do. But as I’ve come to see the impacts of the big players on society, I’ve realized and publicly acknowledged I don’t want to build the next time suck in your life. I’ve always maintained that, but it’s been even more of a focus for me over this year. If you’re an active member on GoWild, you may have noticed some differences in how we’re handling some of those typically addictive aspects of social media. We’re building in notifications that encourage you to help answer questions of people, we’re sharing trophies, which are generally really important moments in your friends’ lives. We’re empowering newbies and veterans alike to be able to tap into a community’s expertise instead of relying on marketing speak from manufacturers. We’re focused on delivering value. If that means you use GoWild once a week to get a question answered or share a highlight, instead of spending 15 minutes a day on the platform, that’s great. The more I’ve watched what’s happening on other platforms like Facebook and Instagram, the more I want to distance ourselves from traditional social media. Last week, I deleted my Instagram app, and already I can see my time on my phone going down. I’m going to share my caption for that last post.

Today we’re talking content. And what it takes to get censored, not just on GoWild, but on other platforms. Everyone talks about censorship, or claims to be censored, but today, we’re going to use real life examples of content and see how they would stack up against the major platforms. This show was requested by a member of our community, Richard Connor, who wants to know how GoWild’s content policies work and what we’re looking for. Most of these large networks have their terms of service, which refers to their community guidelines. It can be really difficult to sort through these guidelines, because networks like Facebook have dozens of pages you have to sort through. It’s actually kind of hard to even find the section you’d want to see if content is allowed or not. Disclaimer: We are not attorneys. “When we get a bird, that’s when I’m going to decide. Am I really a hunter? Or am I a nature photographer?”– Chris GleimThis show’s a little different. I documented my co-founder’s first hunting experience. You’ll hear the excitement in his voice pre-hunt, the self doubt and curiosity of what it will be like to take an anima’s life, and the overall the highs and lows hunters deal with. It’s an honest, first-hand account of what it is like to try hunting for the first time.Chris Gleim is the Chief Development Officer at GoWild. He’s an avid hiker and outdoors enthusiast. And now, he’s a hunter.Since working on GoWild, he had gotten more and more interested in hunting culture, and decided he wanted to go himself. So we decided to make it happen this turkey season and document the experience.I wanted to do this to encourage all of you to take someone hunting for the first time. As I type these show notes, I’m coming out of the R3 Symposium (Recruitment, Retainment, and Reactivation), which was held in Lincoln, Nebraska. I’ve spent three days listening to some of the most experienced people in the hunting industry brainstorm how they can solve the problem to stop the decline in hunters. Here’s the thing: If all of you, and all of your friends, and all of their friends can start to take someone hunting for the first time every year, we can curb this ourselves. We don’t need the industry to figure it out—we can be the answer.Remember, we’re stronger together.

"The first year we came out, we bought as much inventory as we could in a short amount of time. We were handwriting on white boxes with black sharpie all of the data on the shells. And when we launched, our online store was wiped out in 16 minutes."— Nick Charney Today’s guest started off packaging shotgun shells into plain white boxes with the labels written on the box. We’re going to talk through what it takes to go from that, to doubling your revenue in a single year. Nick Charney is an engineer and shotshell ballistics expert. He is currently on active duty with the United States Air Force and he is the co-founder of Apex Ammunition.I was drawn to his story because A) I’m a cofounder of an outdoor company myself. I could tell something was wrong with my hand but couldn’t move it.”— Braxton McCoy What do suicide bombers, hyenas, horse training and Maxim magazines falling from the sky have in common? They’re all a part of Braxton McCoy's journey. This podcast is kind of insane. I’m honored to share this story, really. Braxton McCoy brought an incredible story, more so than I even thought possible. This podcast is about forced perspective. It will ground you in reality. And one of those realities, is that suffering is part of life. I was admittedly caught off guard at one point in this podcast. You say you're a hunter, and it evokes an image of the 'manly man.' You're looking for a prize, or a trophy. That's what I'm doing. Hunting mushrooms is exciting."— Alan Bergo, Foraging ChefIn some ways, I might have called today’s guest a mad scientist. But he’s been very clear, he’s not at all a scientist. But I will stand by the fact that he’s odd. I have discussed cooking venison dozens of times on my show, but never have we talked about cooking venison breast—seriously. And never have we discussed the ins and outs of eating goat or leaching liver or whole carcass quite like this. And it’s truly marvelous, in its fantastical oddity. While we do cover all of that, we dive very deep into the surprising world of mushrooms. I have never talked to anyone about eating mushrooms and other wild findings in the same way Alan and I do. The guy is absolutely obsessed with not only finding them, but finding them at the absolute peak time of year. Show Note LinksAlan’s Website, Forger ChefMushroom Identifier Instagram Untamed Mushrooms100 Edible Mushrooms Mushroomexpert.comNeck roast recipe YouTube

"The black bear population in New Jersey is exploding. Years and years of not hunting them contributed to the fact they established a foothold in northwestern New Jersey that has become the thickest in North America. 80% survive to adulthood. It's a unique habitat for these bears. And people think suburbia is not a great habitat for bears, but they need food, water and shelter. Dumpsters provide all of those things for black bears in New Jersey."— Cody McLaughlinNew Jersey's black bear population is the densest in North America. But in 2017, the last year public lands were open and one of the highest harvest years on record, more than twice as many bear cubs were born as were killed in the hunt that year. More than 80% of New Jersey's black bear cubs survive to adulthood. And the breeding rate for black bears in NJ is more than twice that of other areas, with litters averaging 4-5 cubs. Cody McLaughlin is with the New Jersey Outdoor Alliance, which is taking a lawsuit against the current governor. It's an interesting topic for sure and I think it'll be some of y'all's favorite as of late. Website TwitterInstagram

"Shoshone Rose is an off the rails, fictional murder ballad. It's a tale I totally invented. It's a character I invented. A woman of Shoshone decent. She's lighter skinned. Set in the late 1800s. And she goes around in these camps of American forces. She dresses in a way that you can't tell who she is. She speaks English and passes as white or mixed. And she kills the guard, and goes and murders the general in this camp."— Emily Scott Robinson, describing her powerful ballad Shoshone Rose Emily Scott Robinson is a singer songwriter who travels the country in her RV. She crafts some incredible music and narratives, including Shoshone Rose, which she describes above. Typically my show features people from the hunting and fishing industry, but for this one, I found someone in the music industry, living an outdoors lifestyle. I love Emily’s music. She is such a great songwriter. And when I found out she lived in a freaking RV and rambled the country, I really wanted to have her join my show and talk about that. She’s a total breath of fresh air. No, not just because today we literally are wondering if each breath of air will be the one that infects us. Emily is just special. I think her interview highlights that well, but if you check out her songs, you’ll see what I’m talking about. I wish Emily well in these strange times. I keep thinking of what’s going on, and the only thing that’s really resonated with me is Joe Rogan’s description of modern times. “We live in a movie.”Emily Scott Robinson Website TwitterInstagramSpotify

“I look for diamonds in the rough, guys who aren’t well known, but have success. Your local heroes, so to speak. The more I’ve done this over the years, a guy who is a really good elk hunter isn’t necessarily a good elk hunter in Oregon even though they kick butt in Idaho. I look for region guys who have a lot of success, because they’re doing something a little different. The more tools you can add to your tool box, you have that much better of a chance at succeeding.” — John Stallone Where do you find the diamonds in the rough? Hint: You have to get your hands dirty.Today we have an interesting outdoor media creator for the show. John Stallone has worked as the host of Days in the Wild TV, he works with Days in the Wild Outfitters, he’s been a media director for the hunting channel, and he’s well known for being the host of Interviews with the Masters podcast. This guy is connected, which is why it’s interesting to me that he focuses on not talking to people who are in that well known network. He’s got some interesting opinions on the evolution of outdoor media. And I enjoy John’s take on the importance of getting kids and new hunters outside. Johnstallone.me

"I want to create something that's introductory to the sport, but also something the seasoned veteran can appreciate. If someone can pick up a magazine about a celebrity, and trip onto a story about fishing or hunting, all of the sudden I may have converted someone to a hunter. This industry has some declining numbers. We're here to talk to different demographics and get people outdoors."— John Radzwilla, Editor-in-Chief Hook & Barrel MagazineJohn is the Editor in Chief of Hook & Barrel Magazine. He and his wife founded the publication in Texas, and focus on hunting, fishing, the outdoors lifestyle and trends, and overall outdoor culture. Their articles are a bit more lighthearted and uplifting, which I think is important important right now. It’s so easy to feel like an outcast in hunting and fishing right now, with social media negativity and mass media criticism of our lifestyle. John is curating a narrative that revolves around food, drink, fitness, music, travel and adventure. It’s fun, easy-to-digest content. And they typically highlight a celebrity’s story in the outdoors, such as Danica Patrick, Willie Robertson, Tito Ortiz, Jeff Foxworthy or Lee Brice. Hook & BarrelInstagram Facebook

“There was a point where I was over it. I was on a hamster wheel. I didn’t have any money. I had a breaking point where I wanted to move back home. But it was also that point that I ended up signing my first publishing deal.”— Jordan DavisToday’s podcast is star status. No, he’s not a rockstar podcaster or five star outfitter. He’s a country music star. Jordan Davis has been recognized by Billboard, Rolling Stone, CMT, Pandora, SiriusXM and many more as one of the up and coming stars in country music. Originally from Louisiana, Jordan pursued a degree in environmental sciences, and is a passionate hunter. Today he lives in Nashville, where he moves years ago to try and make it big as a country songwriter. With hundreds of millions of streams online, Jordan has made quite the splash. He has back-to-back platinum certified hits. And he recently won Best New Country Artist with iHeart Radio’s Music Awards. He was ACM’s New Male Artist of the year, and has a ton more accolades I could read off, but I think we’ve established that he’s crushing country music radio right now. OSearchJordan Davis

“I want to help these small companies. I want to help them build their brand, and build their story and be successful. They’re spending money in areas that’s not fruitful. I started talking to these men and women that make these things, and this whole new world opened up to me. And it was no longer my grandfather making fishing baits. It was people in Arkansas making duck calls or someone in California making lanyards. So I thought I wanted to make this for myself. But I discovered a new culture of people, and heard what they really need.”— Adam Gifford, Founder of TackleHack Today's guest will tell you how he started his company. It involved being told you couldn’t, exploring the depths of the unknown, and running up a lot of credit card bills. Starting a company is hard. Adam Gifford, my guest, calls it a roller coaster. Which sounds trite, but I’ve personally been through highs no drug replicates, and I’ve been in the trough of sorrow, as it’s known among founders. People are always going to tell you that you can't do something. When you realize that there is not a single adult in this world who has the ability to control your destiny besides you, you can rapidly evolve your career. Adam Gifford motivates the hell out of me. This interview or chat starts off heavy on the business side of things, and we work our way through Adam’s passion for the community and the individual people his company is helping. Adam has faced many of the same challenges I have. He’s building a tech company in the midwest. He sounds different. He has to deal with the garbage perception that people in the outdoors aren’t advanced. But he has persisted on and that’s why I think he has a great shot at success. TackleHackSponsored by Houston Safari Club FoundationRestless Native is brought to you by Houston Safari Club Foundation. "I don’t ask everyone to hunt—I realize it’s not a likely reality. But I do hope that those who don’t hunt can understand why I pursue this connection to nature and my food. My experience and respect for death grounds me in what it means to live. Knowing the gravity of mortality is an expansion of the mind, and it provides a moral compass for who I want to be: A respectful participant in nature, as opposed to one who takes and offers nothing in return. "— Brad LuttrellToday is something different. There’s no guest.  Today, in my first podcast of 2020, I am sharing something that I’ve put a lot of work into describing. As you’ll hear, it’s a response to a magazine article I read this fall, which rattled me. The more I thought about this perverse interpretation of hunting, the more I wanted to provide a response. I was hopeful their team would be interested in providing a perspective from someone who has actually hunted in the last two decades and knows the real culture. They never responded. I'm not necessarily surprised in the lack of response. I worked in journalism briefly and I get it. They hear from a lot of people. But their mission on their website claims a desire to "show the spots that make the South a far better place than most folks think it is." And I think this column fell far short of that goal. Hunting is far more than what outsiders like him think it is. And I was hopeful to showcase a rebuttal in the magazine, but alas, here we are. Months have gone by with no progress. I did end my communication with them by inviting the editor and the author out to hunt with me. I believe such a trip would leave them disappointed in the decision to run the original column, if not actually embarrassed about how dead wrong it was. Writers, photographers and content creators have important jobs. Documentary work is more than capturing a single moment. As conflict photographer James Nachtwey says about himself, this is about being a witness to moments in history. I’m sure the publication’s intentions were good. This was simply an uninformed decision. But while reviewing people celebrating it on Twitter, it became clear to me that this was not being a good witness for those who can’t see. And while my work may never reach them, this is my effort to bring some insight into why hunting brings out the the best version of me. I hope you enjoy. Bitter Southerner's "Why I Don't Hunt Anymore"Share your feedback with the Bitter Southerner here

"I was bear hunting in Russia and it’s one of my favorite hunts ever, and I didn’t tag a thing. Or I think of big horn sheep hunting with my husband, and we didn’t take a sheep. To me, if you can go out there and have your best day ever without tagging an animal, that’s what makes you a true sportsmen.”— Mia AnstineOn this show, we talk about bear hunting in Russia, chasing big horn sheep, what it means to be named one of the most influential women in hunting and entrepreneurship. I met today’s guest through an organization you’ve heard me mention often, the Professional Outdoor Media Association or POMA. Just last week someone called me and asked if they should join and you already know my answer. But I love POMA’s conference because it brings me to meet people like our guest today. Mia Anstine is a very interesting story in hunting. Her path to guiding isn’t exactly what I expected. It meanders a bit, and then she has absolutely catapulted her career in outdoor media. She’s written for Field & Stream, traveled with a ton of brands, she’s involved with Safari Club International. It’s impressive. More than the accolades, Mia is just a great person to know and chat with, which is what makes this such a good interview. “Here comes this caribou and my gun is still in the tent. Caribou season just started. I couldn’t get set up and it was going so fast. I’ve never seen a caribou run that fast. It goes away. And not even five minutes later, we spot another one doing the same thing. And it turns, and comes right towards basecamp.”— Lacey HoffmanThese guests left, and a few hours later, I got a text saying, “Dude, I forgot to mention being charged by a musk ox!”You know you have good stories when you forgot about the musk ox charge. Two of my favorite guests are back on the show today. All the way from Alaska down to the studio in Kentucky, we have Lyn and Lacey Hoffman. If you heard my three hour podcast with them last year, then you know it’s going to be good. Lyn and Lacey show up with a host of stories. Unfortunately they got stuck in a snow storm while traveling down to Louisville, so we didn’t get as much time for chatting as we’d hopped. A few hours after they left, Lyn started texting me, telling me about the musk ox and a whole host of other things he forgot to mention.I love these two. I came home this night and told my wife that it actually makes me sad that I don’t get to see them any more than I do. I see so many people doing things to try and be influencers. But it almost always feels disingenuous. Then you have Lyn and Lacey, who are living the life they want, and as a byproduct, you have inspiration. That, to me, defines being an influencer. They motivate me far more than some platitude written across a sunset photo. To actually chase a dream takes courage. I don’t know anyone who is living a more adventurous life than them. I’ve met a lot of folks through GoWild and they are among my favorite. Their story inspires me. Lyn has been in the hunting industry for years, working as a hunting guid. Despite a highly seasonal career, he sticks with what he loves. Lacey quit her job as a teacher to join Lyn on his trips last year. She packs, transporting hundreds of pounds of meat in bear and wolf country. And they have shaped their entire lifestyle around being mobile, flexible and truly chasing a dream. The duo does a lower 48 tour each year, and I’ve been lucky enough to be a stop on their list for the last three years. For the last two years we’ve done podcasts. This one does not disappoint.Show Notes(I did incorrectly state that Chris Kresser is a doctor. “You could see what looked like two huge dogs. Tim said “those are some very, very big dogs.” We’re 60 yards away. Tim racks a shotgun. And let’s loose in the air. The one on the boat dock stood on its hind legs. It was freaking massive. It drops to all fours and starts running at us.”— Dark Waters, Paranormal StorytellerWarning, this show does have some serious language.Last week I released a few shows with paranormal storyteller, Dark Waters. In those shows, Dark Waters talks through what he does, as himself, James, the storyteller. Today, I have a collection of stories from James, as his persona, Dark Waters. That is, he’s telling these in the first person perspective of the person who told him the tale. He’s reliving the experience, typically telling it all from memory. The last two of these are actually first-hand tellings from hunters and anglers. In pulling these stories together, I will say, I got sucked in. "Nearly every dogman attack—and this is a detail I leave out—the majority were bowhunters."— Dark Waters, Paranormal StorytellerFall means different things to us all. For some, it’s crisp mornings, quiet sits in tree stands. For others, it might be chasing bass during the fall feed. For others, and this is a select few, Fall will mean something entirely different.Fall will forever mean reliving the most horrifying moment of your life. While recording last year’s series of dogman content, I got pretty into researching these dark stories from the woods. I don’t know that it ever really resonated with me, more than I was just curious. Part of me wonders how dogman or bigfoot could exist without being documented in this modern era, and I know this can’t be real. But then, part of me thinks about some of the tales from the King of Horror, Dark Waters, and I wonder if maybe there isn’t some truth to the government not wanting you to know. One thing I know to be true, is the more you read about this stuff, the more you open your mind to it being a possibility. You might listen to today’s show and walk away saying, “That was entertaining.” And it is. Dark Waters is entertaining—that’s what he does. But if you’re like I was last year, part of you might be left wondering if there isn’t something to these sightings. And maybe, you might just have your own story of something unexplained in the woods. Today, I bring you tales of just that. We have a bowhunter who saw and heard sheer horror as a creature of the woods put on a horrific display of strength. We’ll tell you which type of hunter is most likely to have these encounters. Where you might find these demonic animals. And what you can do to stay safe. Or as safe as you can be when hunting among dogman. Iamdarkwaters.comHear my last show with Dark Waters.Hear all of Restless Native's Dogman Content

"[Conservation advocacy] is just the right thing to do. It's only benefited the brand through and through. Not that people don't disagree with us, but we've become known as a brand with a focus on conservation."— Ford Van Fossan, First Lite Conservation, Content And Digital Merchandising Manager Ford Van Fossan is a Conservation, Content And Digital Merchandising Manager with the technical hunting clothing company, First Lite. You all may recall my conversation with First Lite cofounder Scott Robinson a while back. In that episode we got to hear about the first 5-6 years of First Lite, the challenges and what it’s taken to build the brand. Ford shares that story over the last few years, where the brand has really scaled and has moved into new spaces. We’ll hear about the brand’s expansions, and also Ford’s background as a conservationist. That’s a researcher and technician, working with US Fish & Wildlife Service and universities to study wildlife and habitat. There are a few take aways from this interview. For me, I take away the importance of knowing your customer, and knowing them well. First Lite is a great case study on caring and truly interacting with the people who pay their hard earned money for your product. I don’t know of many brands who do that. Another takeaway is the importance of finding the right way to give back. At the end of this show, Ford talks about some of the initiatives we can expect to see from First Lite over the coming years. If you’re a gear head, this show is for you. If you’re a hard core hunter, this show is for you. “We’re changing the mindset that if I have a honey hole, I’m not going to tell anyone about it. There’s no Jedi mind trick. That’s a scarcity mentality. We’re going to talk about acceptance in hunting, and the hunting industry.Today, I chat with a guy who’s become a friend of mine and a mentor of sorts. His company is also a Client Partner of GoWild. Teaching is at the core of being human. So is hunting. This is who we are. It’s who we have always been, but just because it’s always been there for us, doesn’t mean it always will be. We are entering the most significant fight in the history of hunting. If we don’t take the recruitment challenge seriously, the “mutualists” and city dwellers are going to continue to chip away at our lifestyle. — Brad LuttrellBack in April I read a piece of my writing, a submission to Houston Safari Club Foundation’s magazine, Hunter’s Horn. That was episode 64, and many of you responding asking for more podcasts like that. This is more of a dive into my brain as a writer and maybe as an amateur philosopher. Or maybe, just as a guy who thinks about stuff too much. While this piece is not an advertisement, Houston Safari Club Foundation is a sponsor of GoWild and Restless Native. If you like what you hear and want to subscribe to Hunter’s Horn, you can join Houston Safari Club Foundation at wehuntwegive.org.

"I'm at a low point. I'm in a significant amount of pain with two torn knees, I had just spent six or eight months solely dedicated to this endeavor that effectively ended in abject misery."— Sam AyresYou may know today's guest better by his social handle or his podcast name, "Living Country in the City." That was how I got to know him. Today, those of you who know Sam will be surprised to get to know him a much deeper level and to hear that his journey has been more than learning to hunt. He's dealt with life changes, online harassment and bullying, and more. Yet, he's persisted.Today he talks through going from Living Country in the City to his new show, The Wild Initiative. He'll walk us through his move, what it's like quitting your job with no income, and how he's making it work with podcasting and by applying another skill. “When something really matters in my life, I’ve come to the realization that you either have to be willing to do nothing about it, and ignore it, and let it fester. Or, you have to be willing to be wrong about it and take actions that may fail. It may result in unintended consequences. It’s be wrong, or do nothing. If you’re willing to try something and be wrong, that’s always better than doing nothing.”— Charles Merritt, Buddy InsuranceToday, we talk bed bugs, crossbow accidents, mountain bike crashes, comic books, DIY bedrooms, veganism, deforestation and the Appalachian Trail. Do I have your attention? Yeah, I thought that was probably better than saying I was interviewing an insurance guy. But seriously! We discuss all of that with an insurance guy. But it’s not just regular insurance, this is insurance for outdoorsmen and women. Buddy is on-demand accident insurance for people who live outdoor lives. Charles is going to outline his outdoor background, how he came to founding his company Buddy, and he’s going to give some advice for those who are chasing their dream. Charles is a really thoughtful, well spoken guy. He takes his time, pausing to compose thoughts, and he seems like he rarely misplaces words. I admire that. I think you’ll be inspired by his drive. Today is a bonus show from an interview with me (ah hem, that's Brad) on Dan Johnson’s podcast. You all may recall Dan Johnson from joining me on Restless Native. I was also on his show a while back, and that’s what you’ll hear today. Before we dive into that, I wanted to tell you about a couple of things. First, we have a deal with Houston Safari Club Foundation going on where you can get a digital membership. Remember, Houston Safari Club Foundation is not a Texas organization, it’s a conservation organization based in Texas. If you heard episode 64, a Wild Journey, that reading was from one of my article submissions to their magazine, Hunter’s Horn. Many of you messaged me asking for more articles like that, so here is your chance. For just $35, you can get access to some great member benefits including the magazine. Tap here for that deal. The second thing I wanted to mention was this is the last week for our First Lite sweepstakes. Soon, I’ll be calling someone to tell them they just won a trip worth at least $4500. The First Lite sweepstakes ends on September 1, so make sure you enter if you haven’t. This is a rare chance to hunt whitetail in Nebraska. The hunt is also for whitetail. You’ll be working with world-class guide, Jordan Budd, on her family’s property. Cable Smith with Lone Star Outdoor Show will also be joining you for the hunt. And, as if that wasn’t enough, you’re getting a butt load of First Lite gear, which First Lite now says might be worth three times what they originally committed to. You can enter by downloading GoWIld, and searching for “sweepstakes.” Entering from there is easy and the whole thing takes less than a minute. Alright, let’s get back to Dan Johnson. Dan was one of the earliest of guys to get into podcasting in the hunting space. You may know that name from Mark Kenyon’s show, Wired to Hunt, where Dan got his start. Or, you may know him from his show and networks, Nine Finger Chronicles and Sportsmen’s Nation. This interview is mostly about what we’re doing at GoWild. I think I shamefully pre-announce a product that has since been put on hold. Oh well, that’s startup life and part of being a big-mouth founder who gets a little too excited sometimes. I will say, what we ended up going with for this year is launching in just a few weeks and I think you’re really going to love the first version of that. To keep myself safe I’m not teasing that, but I will say it’s the first of two huge initiatives for the rest of 2019. That’s right, we’re not done innovating just yet.Houston Safari Club Foundation digital membership infoFirst Lite Sweepstakes DetailsMy last show with Dan

And one of the best ways we can all help is with our time.Houston Safari Club Foundation and GoWild have once again teamed up to promote an entire week dedicated to educating hunters and anglers on how to get involved and make an impact beyond their dollars.Houston Safari Club Foundation’s mission is to preserve the sport of hunting through education, conservation and the promotion of hunting heritage. While the group is based in Texas, its reach and impact extends far beyond the Lone Star State. They believe National Conservation Week poses a chance for hunters and anglers nationwide to band together and make an impact. What does it mean to be a conservationist? It means something a little different to each person I talk to, but one thing is clear to me: We should all be pushing beyond our license dollars to earn that title. It's our hope that this week encourages people to think through how they can make an impact. You can get involved with National Conservation Week, August 18-24th. Your effort could be clearing trails, stream cleanups, planting trees, assisting with animal counts, habitat improvements, or fish sampling. "I see so much dereliction of journalistic duty among reporters. You see these people in DC who have disdain for the hunting and fishing way of life, and it's really sad. I strive to help people get connected to see what this industry does."– Gabriella HoffmanIt takes courage to admit you’re new at something. And today’s guest is someone who doesn’t back down from being new at something she actually speaks about as an authority. Wait, what? Seriously. Gabriella Hoffman has worked her way up to being an active writer in the hunting, fishing, outdoor and firearm spaces, but she’s relatively new to hunting. She’s also a very active political reporter, and I would certainly put the influencer label on her, even though it may not surface how some of you interpret it. In many ways, influencers to me are the new newspaper columnists. People are excited to see new content from them. They have a clear but evolving point of view. And they reach the masses. The idea of an influencer often gets tied to social media, but it can run so much deeper than that.Gabriella, or Gabby as her friends call her, is a great example of that. She is an influencer on many levels, ranging from her articles to her own podcasts, from her social channels to her own network. She’s an interesting person, and she and I got to sit down and chat about her background and hear what she thinks of today’s media landscape. This is another great show from POMA. I’ve got one more of these in the chamber. Unlike the last couple, that person’s last name is not Hoffman.

"I think your luck is created. Your success is directly related to the amount of work you put in."— Nick HoffmanToday’s show is with a fiddle player, pilot, television host, hunter, producer, conservationist, POMA board member and so on and so on.Nick Hoffman is a lot of things. I’d venture to say he and I have become friends over this last year, from meeting up at tradeshows and POMA this summer. I really like the guy. And I love what he’s all about. He’s got a really interesting story and I think Nick has a good heart. In our short friendship together, he seems to be authentically Nick all the time. Camera on, camera off, it just seems like he’s always himself. In fact, when he and I presented together on POMA’s panel, he pulled up a picture of himself where he’d gotten scoped. If you don’t know what I mean, he had shot a rifle and the gun kicked the scope into his eyebrow, and he had blood running down his nose. I thought that showed his personality. That’s a moment many TV show hosts would hide. They’d delete the footage and it’d never be spoken of again. But Nick led into his presentation with that with no shame. You're going to really enjoy this one. So let's get to it.

“Don’t post grip and grin pictures. Especially of predators and iconic African zoo animals. I get it. People say ‘screw you’ and I get hate mail. But you have to understand, if we are going to change the hearts and minds of the people, we can’t go out and say ‘screw you.’ We have to say, there is a great story to be told about your deer. You don’t have to take your broadheads and put the logo out there, and chest bump and high five. Just don’t post those pictures.”— Tom OpreToday’s guest might ruffle some feathers. In fact, he’s been known to piss a few people off. And, he’s not going to apologize for it. Tom Opre is passionate. He loves wildlife, hunters, and the wilderness. And he has a deep understanding of what it means to be a consumer. And a conservationist. What Tom is not is apologetic. He has a matter of fact way of delivering his views and the facts he’s acquired over the years. He’s not here to soft serve anything to you. I like this about Tom, maybe because I see some of that in myself. Another thing you’ll quickly pick up on with Tom is his passion isn’t hard to find. It bubbles high near the surface, as some might say. I met him about 16 months ago right as I quit my job to take GoWild full time. He and I hopped on the phone for what I thought would be a 30 minute conversation. We talked for an hour and a half as I listened to Tom lay out his views of what the industry was getting right, and what it was getting wrong. He has a really vibrant view of the state of conservation, being a steward of the land, and particularly, hunting. I’ve met some people or organizations that seem to think we have decades to figure out hunter recruitment and decline. Tom doesn’t. And as someone who sees a future he wants to change, he’s not an armchair conservationist, either. He’s dedicated himself and his work to putting a foot forward in finding a solution. When I was working in the capital, it was heartbreaking to see how agriculture, conservation and environmental issues worked against each other. It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, you have opportunities to make an impact for conservation. Don't just be a consumer. Make sure you're giving back. — Brandon ButlerWe have a problem on our hands, in that the volume of hunters is shrinking overall. We pay for conservation through hunting, fishing and firearms dollars. And we have movements attempting to counteract these participant declines with messages about how hunting is conservation. But if a person doesn’t advocate for conservation, can they be a conservationist? How about if they’re not even aware their act of hunting is contributing to conservation?Few people I’ve ever met understand the ins and outs of what it means to be a conservationist and to wrestle with these questions better than today’s guest. I know this from his content I’ve consumed, being his newspaper column, interviews, our previous chats to this show and the show itself. Brandon Butler is one of the sharpest conservation communicators you will meet, and I admire him because while this guy understands the ugly side of the state of things, he doesn’t let that take away from his own enjoyment of the outdoors. I think that says something special about his character, given the state of affairs. Driftwood Outdoors WebsiteRoeslein WebsitePOMA Website

"As an organization, we don’t care if you have an R or D after your name. If you’re  introducing something that’s going to impact hunting, fishing or trapping, we’re going to fight it.”– Brian Lynn, Vice President of Communications and Marketing , Sportsmen's AllianceIf I told you, you could give me $35, and I would do everything in my power this year to keep your hunting rights from being taken away, would you do it?Probably not. And you probably shouldn’t. While I work in the outdoor industry, I don’t have a whole lot of control over your right to hunt, that is the laws and legislation that decides how often, where and what you can hunt. However, you should take that money and give it to these guys. Today I have Brian and Evan from Sportsmen’s Alliance. They’re going to break down exactly what their organization does, why it matters and give you real life examples of how they’re making a difference. They’re going to paint a picture of the real anti-hunters—the ones who are making a difference. Hint: These aren’t your Instagram keyboard warriors. These are groups with massive funding, support and organization. Brian and Evan are telling an important story, and I’m proud to be a supporter of this organization. For me, saving the future of hunting means a lot of things, but the most important for me as an individual is my right to pursue my own food through adventure and recreation. Now, when this episode is over, I invite you to post on the GoWild app and share what is most important to you. I’m always interested in this answer, because you’d think you’d have a lot of the same answers, but I actually see so much variety when talking to people. So what is it, your family’s heritage? "When we look at the outdoor space, we're on the verge of a data revolution. That is, using data to get better at what we do. Hunting and the outdoors is still this experimental thing, it's something your dad taught you. It's a generational transfer. But now, technology is teaching you to be a better outdoorsman."— Zack Grimes, GoWild Cofounder & Chief Analytics OfficerI have spent an insane amount of time in the car with my good friend, cofounder and the Chief Analytics Officer of GoWild lately. Most of you probably know I’m talking about Zack Grimes. We recently decided to put a mic on one of these conversations to talk about something we just launched. I love talking to people who are busting their butt to make a difference on Restless Native, and felt it was important to take a minute to recognize our team at GoWild for launching activity tracking for fishing. This is a phase one project for sure, but it’s a huge milestone for us and really fishing in general. Zack will get into why I think it’s that big of a deal, but overall I’m not aware of anything else like it. We’ve been cranking on this over the last couple of months, and I wanted to get Zack to talk about just where all of this is going. We do have some pretty significant reveals on here, too. We are running full speed to being the best activity tracking platform for the outdoors. “Rural America’s population has been shrinking and getting older for decades. People are just starting to move back to rural America because they’re getting priced out of urban America. We’re in a transition point right now, as people are either pushed to the edges or out of cities.” — Nicole QualtieriNicole Qualtieri got her start working alongside Janis Putelis and Steven Rinella at MeatEater. She moved on to Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. And today, she serves as the Hunt Fish Editor for Gear Junkie. She will challenge how you think, what you do, and what you’ve always done. I was introduced to Nicole after we launched our activity tracking product this year at ATA, and she and I hopped on the phone to talk about it. I think we booked half an hour to chat. What ensued was an hour and a half of amazing conversation around what’s wrong with the hunting industry, how we can fix it, and it wasn’t the same ol’ stuff everyone else is always saying. Nicole has a fresh perspective. She doesn’t care about what you’ve always done or believed. And she’s got a massive platform to let the world know how she thinks. “Hunters, we take from something. We take the animal that lives in this environment. I know life is busy, but often times we forget to give back, whether that is a conservation effort that is animal or environment specific. If this thing is going to continue for the next 50 years, we need to focus on the environment, and take our eyes off the score and antler size if we want to bring more people into hunting.”— Dan JohnsonToday, we’re going to talk about how my guest got into hunting, podcasting, and, a question I have wondered many times, how he lost his finger. Seriously. Dan Johnson was one of the earliest of guys to get into podcasting in the hunting space. You may know that name from Mark Kenyon’s show, Wired to Hunt, where Dan got his start. Or, you may know him from his show and networks, Nine Finger Chronicles and Sportsmen’s Nation, which we’ll dive into throughout this show.GoWild did some advertising with Sportsmen’s Nation in its early days. We looked at a ton of opportunities, but what stood out to me was Dan’s vision for what he was building. And I asked him some pretty hard, direct questions and once, he said “I don’t know, I’ve never done that before.” I actually appreciated that. It takes a straight shooter to admit that. It was honestly probably that point that I decided we’d go with Dan. Today, there’s no advertiser-client relationship. This message is not hashtag sponsored. “How you carry yourself, how you interact with anti-hunters, how you present your harvested animals, how you follow the law even when no one is looking—it all matters. We are stewards of this lifestyle just like we are with our public lands. The debate is not about hunter versus anti-hunter. When you don’t carry the flame with honor and respect, you lose the people on the fence.”— Brad Luttrell, Hunter's Horn article Today, I’m going to tell you a story.  There is no guest. It’s just me, and a tale of how I got to be sitting at this mic today. Last year, I wrote an article for Houston Safari Club Foundation’s publication, Hunter’s Horn, about how we can flip social media from anti-hunter to hunter recruitment. I talked about the founding of GoWild, but even deeper than that, I talked about my story as a hunter.I’m in the process of submitting another story to Hunter’s Horn, and have been thinking about this one and the statement it makes. With permission of Houston Safari Club Foundation, I’m going to read you that story today. This show may not be for everybody, but I hope it connects with some of you. You’ve gotten to know me as a podcast host, which is off the cuff. But this is me as a writer, which although still me, it is a different version. Slower, methodical and contemplative. “I immersed my life in it. I took jobs that didn’t pay as much. But I was flexible. Being flexible and being willing to take a jump (got me to Vortex).”— Mark Boardman on his path to Vortex All websites have an "About Us," right? Not this one. Here is what I found in the Vortex Optics “About YOU” section. "Normally this is the section where it’s “About Us”. But at Vortex, it’s All About You.Rather than go on about “Us” and how long we’ve been in business and how great we are, we focus on you, what you need, what you want, what’s important to you—because that’s what makes us tick."It goes on to say it’s people, products and promises. I think that’s cool. You’re going to see that same passion come through when Mark Boardman talks about how the company operates, how it serves its customers and how it makes some of the best optics on the market. Many of you will know Mark Boardman, maybe not by name, but as the guy who went Sitka hunting with Rinella on MeatEater. I think he’s been on the podcast at some point, too. “We wouldn’t have as many anti-hunters if we approached that reason ‘why’ better. We’re so good at explaining why we do it to one another, but we’ve failed at explaining it to someone who hasn’t experienced it or is an anti-hunter.”— Sarah BruneNo matter what you do, working with good people matters. Today's guest is just that. Sarah is one of my favorite people I've met in the hunting industry. She's the Director of Marketing with ALPS Mountaineering and ALPS OutdoorZ. You all have likely seen the promotions GoWild has done with ALPS. That's because I love working with Sarah. What I've learned, and not only in this industry but all industries, is that there is no silver bullet in marketing or business. There will always be bigger accounts to be won, but it's the people you partner and work with who make it special. Enjoy this show with Sarah. It's real conversation, with barely any guidance. “That blood goes right back into the soil that nourished them. It’s a really profound moment for us. It’s sad, but it’s incredibly beautiful, too. The amount of gratitude that we have for that animal, and being there as it’s dying, it’s a beautiful thing. But it’s not an easy thing. We live in a culture of ease. Our emotions should not dictate our actions.”— Tara CoutureTara Couture farms her own food, utilizes the entirety of the animal, lives as green as possible, and she cares about this planet. If you’ve listened to any amount of Restless Natives, you know that could not be more up my alley.Tara’s blowing up right now on social media. She’s fighting the good fight, discussing her lifestyle and her diet, which is certainly not mainstream. She gets challenged and she pushes back. It’s great to see her stand up for what she believes. I do have a fear for Tara, though. As she continues into this journey as an unintended social media influencer, the battles she’s fighting today may be won, but the war won’t stop. I hope she can maintain her enthusiasm for educating and explaining, and I hope she can maintain her patience. It’s hard to do that for very long without becoming a cynic or just completely defeated. I think you’ll agree with me though, I think Tara’s got the energy it takes to keep on fighting that good fight. It’s probably all of that animal fat powering her brain. “My wife had my daughter and 7 days later I went on tour for 56 days before coming home. We were gone a lot. Yeah, it’s tough. But my wife’s awesome and we dealt with it. It’s my livelihood and it’s what I’ve always wanted to do. I signed up for this. Everything comes to an end."— Jimmy HermanToday, we have a fur trapper and hunter who’s performed at the Grammys, on Jay Leno and Good Morning America, and stood alongside Steven Tyler, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood. And again, he knows how to run a trap line. That’s pretty cool. We’re chatting with Jimmy Herman, a fiddle player who’s seen tons of success over the last decade. He toured with Carrie Underwood for years, and was beyond the guy in the background. He was very much a star in the show.Jimmy probably looks more like what you’d envision your typical fiddler to look like versus a standard trapper. "I made the Olympic trials and finals, but you pick a bad day to have a bad day, and you're like, 'crap, I just wasted four years.'"— Bert SorinIn 1980, a school teacher named Richard Sorin spent his days teaching, and in the evenings he’d drive his 1974 Land Cruiser across town to load the roof with steel, all so he could bring it home and hack away at it in his garage. And that’s what it takes. Richard was building the foundation of a company, Sorin Exercise Equipment. For many, this is what success looks like. It’s not overnight. It’s not even over a year. It’s trial and error. It’s failure, real tears, heartache, sacrifice, and burning the midnight oil. Today’s guest knows that well. It’s Richard Sorin’s son, who went on to run Richard’s company Sorinex. That’s Sorin Exercise Equipment for those of you who aren’t properly caffeinated yet. Bert is a bit of a freak. He’s a total beast in the gym, an extreme adventurer and hunter in the woods, and he’s a great business mind. He and I get into a bit of everything on this episode. You're going to like it. "As we see the traditional storytellers retire, it's about bringing up the next generation. We have a lot of young people, but I don't want to lose the baby boomer's knowledge. Some of these people have been doing this for 35 yers and they've made the mistakes we don't want to make ourselves."— Kevin OrthmanI met Kevin Orthman just a few days before GoWild launched. And he's been one of our best supporters ever since. I joined POMA for the connections, thinking it could help us pickup some good advertisers as we grow. What I got was so much more. I've made friends, found teammates, met thought leaders, and founded many businesses relationships. The Professional Outdoor Media Association is the best program we work with. I can’t wait for the convention this summer and highly recommend you check it out. If you like this show and are interested in POMA, remember, memberships are cheap. And as I point out in the show. "We're so high up, the people look like ants. A solo climber started to fall. You could tell he was unconscious. As he was falling he was taking out other climbers. The guide was a first responder and he had to go. He said, 'if anyone wants to leave, you have to come now.' I didn't want to be the person who made us come down before the summit..." – Jenn CallahanThe Ironman race is known as the ultimate feet among distance athletes. People have died trying this race. Seriously.Today’s guest is among those few people to even dare this feat. The triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim in open water, a 112-mile bike ride and a marathon, which is 26.2 miles. There are no breaks. It is widely considered the most difficult single-day sporting event in the world. Today’s guest is one of the few people I know who have attempted at Ironman. We’ll hear about that story today, but I want you to know the sacrifice that it takes to even train for these things. Anytime I’ve ever talked to someone who does them will tell you, there is no time for television, movies, or hobbies, and you even have to start cutting back on social events or family time. It requires an incredible amount of focus. Jenn is more than a tri-athlete though. She’s done 16 marathons, again, 26.2 miles each. She’s training for another right now and plans to do at least three this year. She’s climbed a mountain, a story that we’ll hear about in frightening detail. She does a backcountry fishing trip that is certainly more extreme than what anyone I know signs up for—eight days in bear country with no gun, no spray, minimal amounts of backup food, and mile-long portages through the woods to hop from lake to lake while fishing for survival. She’s also a hunter in pursuit of many firsts. It goes without saying that Jenn is one of the most driven people I know. If she falls short of a goal, it is going to eat at her like salt on an open wound. Jenn’s first official week with GoWild was at our company retreat, where we played some team building games. It didn’t take long to see behind her sweet and humble presence is a tiger waiting to pounce at the sign of competition. She’s become a good friend of mine and the founders here at GoWild. I’m lucky to get to work with her every day, and so grateful our paths crossed to bring her here. "I came up with this idea—I want to do a podcast to help people find adventure through hunting in places from East to West. Over the last few weeks, we’ve heard from some pretty large brands like Garmin and First Lite. We heard about those stories years down the road from when that first person, the founder, took that leap of faith to say “I want to do this.” All great companies at some point had someone who said I believe.Today we’re going to her from someone who is in that pivotal moment of trying to figure out when to jump. "There are all of these intangibles that accumulate around this experience of hunting, fishing or being outside. If you apply a number to whatever it is that you harvested, then that's the only thing you think about. Some of those intangibles become lost in the memory of the experience." — Capt. I had no clue I was talking to such an intelligent outdoorsman, and a recipient of two purple hearts.I’ve gotten to know James over the last year, mostly through GoWild, and on one of his appearances on Cody’s podcast, The Rich Outdoors. I’ve learned a ton just from following along with his content, and the conversations that spiral out from the threads he creates.I’m not sure if I’d call James outspoken, or if it’s more that he just calls it like he sees it. He’s the Co-Founder of the outdoor clothing company, First Lite. Through hard work, previous business experience and maybe, a little bit of luck, First Lite has really staked out its own piece of land within the hunting sector as a premier camo. Even if you’ve heard the founding story of First Lite before, we’re going to tackle this from a fresh and less discussed angle. For example, have you ever thought about how markets impact the price of what you’re buying? If the price of merino wool increases in New Zealand one year and drops the next, how should that impact your hunting clothing? We chat through the creation of the product, as well as the brand. Scott gives some insight into some new products, and then we get some basic advice from him, such as how to best layer for cold weather. Scott’s an incredibly smart businessman, as well as an impressive outdoorsman and athlete. You’re really going to like this episode. "Influencer marketing is relatively new... One of the things I look for first in ever single influencer we work with, is do they have ..." — Josh Claflin, Digital Marketer. To hear his No. 1 thing, listen to this showOver the last few weeks we’ve unveiled a lot of behind the scenes content from GoWild. Today I have one of the better looks under the hood of outdoors marketing that you’ll hear.Brand content doesn’t happen like your personal content. It’s not spur of the moment. Brands have content calendars, copywriters, photographers, designers, strategists, account managers and, maybe most importantly, thousands and thousands of dollars at play here. There is no one philosophy on how to build a brand or spend a budget. Some people live and die by print ads and trade shows. Other brand managers may invest heavily in video content. But lately, there’s been a huge trend to push for influencers. What is an influencer? A lot of people would generically say it’s someone with a lot of followers. But my guest today is here to tell you having followers doesn’t make you a leader. Josh Claflin is very knowledgeable. He’s going to unveil some things some outdoor brands might not even want you to know. We’re going to get into how the social media sausage is made. And I will bet that for many of you, he’s going to open your eyes to tell you follower and vanity metrics don’t necessarily make you an influencer. Or even relevant. In fact, Josh is going to unveil the one thing his company looks for beyond your like counts, follower numbers and impressions. Try Out the New GoWild AppThis podcast is brought to you by GoWild. “Part of our vision is to build up a product line of products that can enhance the outdoor experience for the sportsman, but not take away from it.”— Chad VanCamp, Product Manager with GarminToday, January 9, GoWild launches a product with Garmin. This week, I'll be at the 2019 Archery Trade Association’s trade show in Garmin's booth to talk about this integration with the Garmin Connect IQ system. I'm sure over the next few weeks you’ll hear more about the product that we landed on. This interview is to bring you the people behind it, how we even got this relationship rolling and what’s so damn cool about it.Some of you probably know of Chad VanCamp. He’s become a frequent flyer on the Gritty podcast since the Xero bow sight came out last year. Chad and I got to be buddies once this whole thing got started, which is key to any good working relationship.I have to say thank you to Chad, as well as Nick, Audra and Jennifer for all of their help this last year. I know we came into this being small and honestly even a little unproven, but you all saw something in us and believed in team GoWild. I appreciate the opportunity to show you just how good my team can be. Team GoWild came together with Garmin to build an incredible product, and it’s one that I couldn’t have dreamed up alone. As a tech company, few things are more exciting than moving into unchartered waters, and that’s exactly where we are this week.Visit Garmin Website Watch the Garmin TeaserGarmin fenix 5X | Garmin fenix 5X Plus | Garmins fenix 5S | Garmin Tactix CharlieDownload GoWildThe GoWild app can be downloaded on iPhone or Android. "I said, ‘So you don’t know for 100% certainty that this bear is dead?’ He said no, and I told him we have a problem. All of the sudden, out of the corner of my eye, I see alders move, and out comes this wounded brown bear on a dead run, right for us."— Lyn Hoffman, Alaskan big game hunting guideThis show is crazy. We have bear charges. Golden eagle attacks. Tales of successful hunts, including moose, sheep, goats, bears, deer, pigs, coyotes, rabbits and god knows what else I’m forgetting. We hear about of hunting accidents, being stranded on a mountain for days after a bear attack, how Lacey motivated a gentlemen to seize the day in what would be his last mountain hunt ever. And we hear about Lyn and Lacey’s newest business, which gives you a chance to go experience Alaska and get these experiences first hand. Lyn and his wife, Lacey, stopped by the GoWild office recently, and we hit the studio with no particular plans or direction for the conversation. What unfolded is a series of tales mostly from just a single hunting season that showcase why the Hoffman life might just be the best life.If you’re not hyped to listen to this already, I don’t know what else to say to get you there. I won’t even try. On a separate note, I don’t know why any time I do impressions of someone my voice is always a redneck dude. I guess it’s just what I know best. It’s pretty much my voice for all impressions, so don’t be offended. After the interview I’m going to talk about a little something that gets revealed in this podcast, so stick around for my recap and rambling at the end. GoWild users will especially enjoy that. This is a long one, so I’ll see ya on the other side in a few hours. Don’t worry, it’s worth it, and I guarantee you’ll end this show and want more stories from Lyn and Lacey, and I’m willing to bet you don’t even realize how much time has passed.Garmin TeaserPig videoGrayling fishing in AlaskaHoffman Life InstagramDownload GoWild to follow the HoffmansLog Time for this Episode on GoWildShare your thoughts, support, or points of contention by logging time on GoWild. “Those relationships are key. You might have to sort through a bunch of people to find those relationships, but that’s where the time should be spent, because then it doesn’t matter what the market does, because you have quality relationships with people through social media.” — Huntz Colburn, Backcountry Digital FounderToday’s guest specializes in SEO, PPC, CPM, ROI and a whole bunch of other things that would probably make some of you say WTF. We’re talking high level. But we’re also talking how to get a brand off the ground, how to start selling a product with limited knowledge. Huntz is an analytical angler and hunter who recently started his own marketing agency to tackle the gaps found in the industry. But it all started with a Facebook group called Monkey Pickles. Huntz Colburn is sharp. This guy envisioned a digital landscape that would empower local fly fishing or archery shops to take their expertise beyond their hometown, which is certainly a seasonal opportunity, and expand that to the Internet and take it 365 days a year. Huntz’ story inspires me. I love hearing how passionate he is, not only about technology or marketing, but about helping small organizations build upon their bottom line to grow. This interview with Huntz is a true deep dive into how-tos and tactics, and it is a technical chat, but I think you all who have been long-time listeners to this show will appreciate it. Huntz has great advice on running a business, doing it ethically, how to talk to customers, and how to look at your data. And he does it in a way that’s entertaining. It’s educational And it’s just really good info. We’ll bring this all back around to the outdoors. Huntz closes with his story into hunting and fishing, and he’s grounded in some really great values. I know this is a technical show for some of you, but it’s also rare to hear such a transparent perspective. Huntz doesn’t worry about being PC—if it’s a bad marketing tactic, it’s a bad tactic.Backcountry DigitalLog Time for this Episode on GoWildShare your thoughts, support, or points of contention by logging time on GoWild. “You would think in 2018, people from magazines and television networks would show up to R3. But they didn’t. To me, that just further shows the disconnect of where all of this has failed.”— AJ DeRosa, Creative Director, Northwoods CollectiveWhen we started Restless Native, we wanted people who never stayed idle. Never settled for status quo. And who are ever Restless. Today’s guest epitomizes that. A.J. DeRosa has become well known for his work with Project Upland, the incredible content series about chasing upland birds. From their podcast to their website, their magazine to their videos, Project Upland is one of the most, if not the most, downloaded and digested content on upland hunting in the history of pheasants, chukars and grouse.Plot twist: AJ is also an author on the incredible coveted book, the Urban Deer Complex. If you try to pick one of these up on Amazon or eBay, you’ll set yourself back about $200. AJ’s book outlines his tactics to hunt urban deer, such as applying pressure in their comfort zones of parks and playgrounds to push them into backyards, where he’ll be waiting in plain clothes.I met AJ in Lincoln Nebraska at R3. If you listened to any of my episodes from R3, that’s my first episode with Joe Betar and Buck Robinson, I believe I talked about the impression AJ made on me. In my opinion, guys like AJ need to be at the table when discussing R3, that’s recruitment, retainment and re-engagement of our nation’s hunters. AJ is not someone you’d picture as a hunter. He breaks the mold. We’ll talk about that in detail today, and he’s got a lot to say about R3 and what he thinks can be done. In addition to that resume, AJ is the Creative Director of Northwoods Collective, an ad agency for the outdoor space. As most of you know, that’s my background as well, so apart from the awesome beard and tattoos, AJ and I have a lot in common. "I woke up at the hospital. I came to with a broken shoulder. The girls who found me, knew me, and they didn't recognize me. My buddy, the police officer, had tears in his eyes. All I could think about was my brother and I handling things." — Garrett L. GeorgeBy their own definition, Trinity Oaks uses hunting and fishing to give back and make a difference in the lives of others. That’s veterans, children of our fallen first responders and veterans, kids who have terminal illnesses, and the hungry. We’re going to get into all of this through one of Trinity Oaks’ volunteers, Garrett George. Garrett is doing some fantastic work through Trinity Oaks. But he comes from a troubled past. It’s been a long, difficult journey for him. Now, I will say, through Garrett’s journey, there have been some troubling tales, which he’s candid about in this interview. This show may not be right for young listeners for that reason. There’s not any language or anything like that—but there is a recounting of a tale from Garrett’s past that could be a little intense for kids. As always, please log time for listening to this show on GoWild and let me know what you thought of the show. Garrett, our guest, is on there so tag him. “I’d rather be a plumber and be the best I can be, and be able to hunt, rather than to push paint and never be able to hunt again. I feel like that’s more rewarding for me." - Ryan Kirby Today’s guest would tell you he was born an artist. That the paint brush was as natural in his hand as a basketball to Kobe Bryant. I’m not sure I agree. OK, the Kobe Bryant analogy is mine, Ryan would never say that. And I’ll agree some folks are more artistically inclined than others. But even with today’s guest’s natural ability, I think it’d sell his work ethic short to say he didn’t earn his success by putting in his form of 10,000 hours.Ryan has won over a dozen awards from organizations like Outdoor Life, National Wild Turkey Federation, and Quality Deer Management Association. He’s painted dozens of works of art and these things sell for a premium. A couple of Ryan’s paintings may be worth more than your truck. And when you hear how much time and labor goes into one of these paintings, you’ll realize why his paintings sell for a premium. "Candid photography is so much more interesting to me. It can't be setup. You have to be quick with the trigger and you have to anticipate what people are going to do. There are no training wheels. You gotta be on your toes." — Donovan SearsToday, I have a discussion with my Co-Founder and good friend, Donovan Sears, which we documented on our way through South Texas. Donovan is an interesting guy. He’s by far the best designer I’ve ever known. I’ve said that before so that probably doesn’t come as news to long-time listeners. But he’s also a great father, musician, photographer, and woodworker. This episode isn’t directly about a hunting story. It has nothing really to do with hunting directly, other than the fact we’re driving on our way to a hunt. And at times I don’t even know what we’re talking about. But I think folks who have followed the GoWild story and learn about it from my perspective will enjoy this show. Yes, this show rambles. But, you all seem to enjoy these kinds of shows. "I brought people here to show them there's a better way to do life. To do hunting. Butchering. Cooking. To think outside the box when it comes to getting dirty for your dinner. No one wants to help anyone in this industry. We're losing our culture. We're losing what we are and who we are. From Field to Plate classes are to do the opposite." — Jeremiah Doughty, Wild Game Chef with From Field to PlateToday’s audio is brutal at some points. And I will not apologize. So goes it in the field, so goes this podcast.  You’re going to hear the sound of guts suctioning out of a big game animal. You’ll hear a 70 pound gut bucket dragged across pavement. And you’ll hear the loud bangs and frying sounds in the kitchen as we cook up said animal. The quality of this podcast is in the realness. This show was captured during that process so many of us know well—immediately after an animal expires, and during the consumption of that animal. This is a special show coming from my recent trip to Texas. I knew finding time in this busy trip to do a podcast with Jeremiah would be tough. We hunted our tails off. We butchered for hours. And we ate. A lot. So we did this show while Jeremiah did what he does best. If you don’t know Jeremiah, he’s the man behind From Field to Plate. You can find him on GoWild, Facebook or Instagram. His website is a wealth of information. He’s a wild game chef, or the Wild Chef, as we’ve been calling him. Jeremiah was one of the first 50-60 people to use the GoWild app. He tested it out before it launched and I knew he was someone I wanted to work with. Food is my thing. I’m hyper passionate about it, and likewise, I love hunting and see it as a tool to improve my food.Jeremiah’s story is similar. We don’t get into his story as deeply here. If you want to learn more about his background, go to episode 13 of Restless Native. He explains it there. For this show, we wanted to talk to him in his element. As he’s doing what he loves most— butchering and cooking. This guy is one of my favorite people. I mean that. I’ve gotten to know him on GoWild, via text messages and calls, and once I met him in person last week, it was like we had known each other for years. I am lucky to call this guy my friend. And I’m proud of what my friend is doing in this industry. I believe in him, and his brand, and I think his approach to game is spot on. No matter your experience in the woods, You will learn something on this show. I am fairly confident you haven’t heard a podcast like this before. This is real. This is raw. This truly From Field to Plate. "One of the folks said, 'There's a fire. Bring shovels.' We jumped in the truck and drove as fast as we could to where they were talking about. We pull up and shut off the truck. We get out, and we start smelling burned rubber." — Stephen Holley, SIXSITE FounderTeam GoWild is on the road. We’ve been down in Texas meeting up with Stephen Holley and Team SIXSITE where we also had a meet and greet. From there we crashed in Austin for a night before meeting up with Jeremiah Doughty for a three day whitetail hunt. We have a ton of awesome content coming from this trip, and that starts right now. “You have two creatures who don’t have a purpose anymore—the mustang from the American West, and the American soldier. We take these two un-purposed creatures and give them purpose. We break that horse and give it to a veteran. The veteran has the purpose of leading that horse. And you can’t get on a horse without being a leader.”— Rick Franco, COO of Heroes and HorsesYou can’t cheat the mountain. Today we’re talking with a guy who is helping our nation’s heroes learn how to conquer mountains and deal with certain memories they have. We’re joined by Rick Franco of Heroes and Horses. Rick and his team are working to push veterans literally to the top of a mountain, and to find who they are again, and to make peace with some things that it’s just time to leave behind. This is a really interesting approach. I’ve never heard of anything this intensive. And I’m not aware of anything so holistic. You’ll hear Rick talk about how they address everything from nutrition to exercise to sleep to pharmaceuticals. I want to thank Rick for his service in our military. And I know we have a lot of listeners who have served our country. I really think what you’ve done is among the most admirable things a person can do in this life. "Get out there and vote. Support your NGOs or your local organizations. Be involved. It's critically important that we're actively involved beyond going hunting. We must have our voice heard. We must put our money where our mouth is. And we must support individuals that are in support of maintaining the legacy we have in this country."— Joe Betar, Executive Director, Houston Safari Club FoundationWelcome to a special election day edition of Restless Native. If you hate politics, don’t go anywhere. We’re actually not getting into who you should vote for. On today’s show, we’re talking with Joe Betar with Houston Safari Club Foundation. You may recall Joe from a previous episode. He’s an incredibly smart fella, and a guy I’m happy to call a friend. While last time we talked about all of the great conservation and educational efforts Houston Safari Club Foundation promotes, I wanted to have Joe back on for this election day episode to talk about what he’s been doing on the lobbying and legislation side of things. Few people can talk about the impacts of conservation dollars like Joe. And beyond that, we’re going to get into how you can better inform your vote. And I beg of you to exercise your right to vote. There are few things more paramount to your right as an American than your right to vote. Don’t take that for granted. And as Joe said, if you don’t vote, please, keep your complaints to yourself. You have an amazing opportunity to be a part of a solution. With how easy early voting is these days, you have no valid excuses. Please, put your mind to work. "It stood up and he was dumbfounded. People came out and he was trying to warn them. He was waving to get their attention. They were waving like they didn't know what he was talking about. By then this thing just pounced them and mauled them." — Dave Jones, North American Dogman Project Co-FounderThis is the second of a series about Dogman. To hear the first show, listen to Episode 36 with Dark Waters, the King of Horror. What’s creepier, fantastical tales of Dogman, a monster lurking in the woods? Or forensic evidence of a creature proven to be catalyst of misery, maulings and murder? It's gotta be the evidence. The North American Dogman Project is here to say wait a second, maybe it does. They have investigated some horrifying tales. Stories of maulings, slaughters, horrific experiences that will make your blood run cold.I contacted Dave Jones and Joedy Cook out of the blue. I mean, out of nowhere. These guys could have ignored me. I’m an outsider and admittedly not necessarily a believer. But they agreed to come on and do a show to talk about what they’re doing. These guys are really interesting. They didn’t run from a single question. They hit them head on. And they’re open to criticism.I'm not going to let Dogman, or any man, keep me from the woods. And I don’t expect you will either. I bring you these conversations to expand your mind, so we can all learn and to gain new perspective.North American Dogman Project's WebsiteDon't miss the first Dogman episode, Dark Waters. Restless Native is Sponsored by Ramcat BroadheadsSo many of our guests have talked about how much hard work they put into their hunting season. "His brother on the front of the boat is screaming, and falling back towards him in the boat. The front half of this alligator is flying through the air at them. The other half is on the bank. This head came out of the brush and growled at him."— Dark WatersThis is the first of a series about Dogman. To hear the second show, see Episode 37 with the North American Dogman Project. Tonight, I bring you something different. This is something pulled from the shadows of the deepest, dankest and darkest parts of the woods. It's not just tales from the coldest and darkest of waters. We’re talking to the king of nightmares, an orator of real horrors, Dark Waters himself. I suspect Dark Waters is new to many of you. But among those who follow the paranormal will know—Dark Waters is a modern day storytelling legend. Dark Waters is conversationalist. An orator. A collector of tales that he believes to be true. We’ll hear about how he comes about these people, these horrifying experiences, and how he curates them down to the ones that have no room for doubt. These are real experiences. His process has taken thousands of phone calls. Hundreds of hours. And it’s only made possible by the memory of a man who is clearly gifted in the art of storytelling. Tonight may or may not make you a believer. But I promise it’ll sufficiently creep you out.Thinker Thumper YouTube page mentionedDark Waters' WebsiteDark Waters' YouTubeRestless Native is Sponsored by Ramcat BroadheadsSo many of our guests have talked about how much hard work they put into their hunting season. People would love it.” Typically, that conversation is where good ideas go to die.But not with today’s guest. Today we have Bud Fisher on the show. Many of you know his name, but if you don’t, you probably have heard of those Catchin’ Deers guys. The fellas who took an idea at hunt camp and turned it into a full fledged business. And they’re crushing it.Catchin’ Deers swept through social media a few years ago, and what started off as a few trucker hats turned into a business. Now, these guys aren’t all one-liners and a ridiculous logo. They’re smart. They know how to run a business. And they know how to market a product. We’ll dig into all of that today. If you’ve heard Bud in the past, stay tuned. I’ve heard those shows, too. I did my homework to ensure we tell just enough of how this thing got started, but we’ll hear him tackle a few new questions.Oh, and, I’ve got a surprise guest at the end. “I’m happy to put my neck on the line. I get a lot of anti-hunter threats. I got a $250,000 bounty on my head. But it’s something that has to be talked about.”— Olivia Opre, Hunting Consultant & Mrs. America Contestant Imagine the amount of hate you must have in your heart to put a bounty on someone’s head. You must have really pissed somebody off, right?Today’s guest knows that kind of hate. And she knows it well. Olivia Opre has traveled the world hunting hippos, lions, elephants, and dozens of other species. It’s easy for the media to take that narrative and make her into a trophy hunter. It happens a lot. In fact, it’s happen so much, that Olivia has gotten really good at responding to this kind of sensationalism. In fact, she’s so good, I swear you might think some of these answers are scripted. They’re not. She’s just that confident, and that good. Olivia understands the complexities of hunting. And man, she has an interesting background. Like how she was once a Mrs. America contestant. “If you do not know something well, if you don’t have a sense of some place, you are not going to protect it.”— Mahting Putelis, Founder of Hunt to EatMany American patriots and outdoorsmen embrace the Gadsden flag’s message of “Don’t Tread on Me.” I do, too, but sometimes we could use a reminder that the best defense, may actually be a good offense. In regards to telling our story of hunting in today’s world, we have to be careful when taking a Don’t Tread on Me philosophy. This same mentality is totally appropriate when toppling an oppressive government dictating your religious freedoms. It’s less so when used to defend your hunting privilege.A good offense is knowing that our story could offend voters who could take that privilege away from us, so we should do our best to stay on the offensive, doing good work to earn points for hunting. Take people into the locker room to show the camaraderie and fellowship of your hunting trip. Talk about what it’s like to have the world wake up around you, and to see the woods as the wolf does. Share your table fare both directly, by cooking for people who are curious about wild game, and also through your social media channels. All of these activities earn points for our lifestyle. I’m not advocating for never showing a trophy shot. But I am saying when you do, make sure you’re not just going through the motions. Think about the content. Remind yourself that your audience matters, no matter how many followers you have. We’re going to dive deeper into this conversation today. We’ll actually be talking about a lot of different things. Today’s guest is Mahting Putelis, the founder of Hunt to Eat. Mahting would be considered new to hunting and the hunting industry to some. He’s outspoken by nature, he’s ruffling some feathers for sure. He makes some from the old guard uncomfortable. He doesn’t care about hunting’s societal norms established thus far and is willing to speak up with he disagrees. “We’ve had 4 young widows at these camps. And they want to take their kids hunting but they’ve lost their mentor. They come to us for basic skills so they can pass on to their kids and pass on the skills.” - Brittany BoddingtonToday I have a couple of women who see the hunting industry landscape, and they are getting involved in an interesting way. In this episode, we chat with Brittany and Shannon from She Hunts Skills Camp. They’re empowering women to sharpen their hunting skills in a camp that is just for women. The guests go through real, legitimate training with industry professionals to learn to shoot, stalk, butcher, the whole 9 yards. I was expecting to hear about how Shannon and Brittany had impacted people’s skill sets. What I wasn’t prepared for are how this camp has actually impacted people’s lives. It’s clear they’re making waves with the women who attend. I commend them for that and hope they see many years of success going forward with this. Hunting isn’t just man’s nature. “I don’t look at it from what I’d do different. That’s a rabbit hole that will continue on for eternity. There’s nothing I would have done different. As time goes on, it’ll just get more beautiful. It’s bigger than one person.”— Kris BentleyAppalachia has some fantastic contributions to this world. The music, food and arts that comes from those hills can be incredible. It’s also no stranger to anguish. I’m always interested by the lore that lives within Appalachia. Much of this history has hung around poverty. In the modern era, it seems the media only shows up when a northeast wind carries a tragic scent that smells like an opportunity to extort already burdened people for ratings and click bait. The media has essentially created poverty porn. A few years ago, photographer Bruce Gilden from Vice Media showed up to “document” Appalachia. What came out of it was essentially a witch hunt. And that’s not just my opinion. Another photographer who worked with Gilden on this shoot was especially conflicted about Gilden’s work, saying he at one point was disappointed with the amount of normal people he was encountering. Now, if you see his work, you’ll find caricatures of the stereotypes of Appalachia. She even went on to say Gilden was turning people into what he wanted them to be, and that it was dangerous especially in a place with a history of extraction. His work isn’t all that different than how politicians use Appalachia. Campaign speeches focused on tales of poverty, loss, and death, all to sensationalize and drive an action. In Gilden’s case, it was clicks on a digital story. In politicians case, it’s to drive votes, all for hopes of progress. Just like how these subjects never heard from the photographer again, politicians leave a wake of misplaced hope. I'm from Appalachia. And Bruce Gilden's work does not represent the people I know. Appalachia has taught me a lot. It’s at the core of who I am and all I do. My work ethic and drive directly comes from those hills. The people there have some of the biggest hearts and daily prove you don’t need the biggest wallets to make a difference in someone’s lives. Many have those same work ethics. I’ll link to a story in the notes about coal miners training to become software developers. Today I’m talking to someone who knows Appalachia like I do. Kris Bentley grew up there, and understands what it’s like to be a Kentuckian away from the camera. He’s a musician that many people in my neck of the woods will know from his work with Sundy Best. Now, Sundy Best blew up about six years ago. I remember watching them hit CMT, have articles in Rolling Stone and their albums charted nationally on platforms like Billboard. Kris and his band member Nick wrote a lot of fantastic songs, which you can hear on the Restless Native Spotify playlist linked in this episode. I wanted to have Kris, or as his friends call him, Bentley, on to talk about home, his group Sundy Best, and what he’s up to these days. You may not be from Appalachia, but think about the parallels in your story. Just as hunting and even fishing are misunderstood in the outdoors, so is this place Kris and I call home. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be from there to enjoy this show. We also have a Giveaway at the very end, and Kris is going to play a few songs for us at the end, so be sure to stick around. I’ll do the giveaway in my post-show wrap up.Restless Native Spotify Playlist with Kris Bentley's Music from Sundy BestCoal miners now becoming web developersBruce Gilden's exploitative take on AppalachiaRestless Native is Sponsored by Houston Safari Club FoundationIt’s time to book your trip to Texas for Houston Safari Club Foundation’s convention. “I didn’t have direct affinity for or against hunting, but if I had to choose, I was probably against it.”- Brad Neathery, CEO of Modern HuntsmanSometimes it seems Lincoln Tapp might have been right when he says social media is doing more harm for hunting than good. This weekend, animal rights activists coordinated a blitzkrieg against several well known hunters via multiple major platforms. While these animals were harvested legally and ethically, it didn’t matter. Some hunters made some great points in corresponding with this anti-hunters, but a few bad apples ruin the bunch. In this case, the whole bunch was already spoiled. It’s shameful how some people responded to the criticism. Telling people to F off and suck it. It’s moronic. And it’s essentially proving Lincoln right.GoWild has grown to be more than I ever initially conceived that first day. But it started with these same conversations. I was hiking down a mountainside after checking some trail cameras, when the absurdity of all of this polarity hit me.That same lightning strike hit Brad Neathery a few years ago, too. But it’s taken him an entirely different direction.Brad, and his business partner, Tyler, join us today to talk about their project, Modern Huntsman. While I went the digital route for my solution to the misunderstanding, they went old school. They founded a print publication to help people better understand what hunting is.That’s a really damn important conversation. We have a fun opportunity to get your hands on signed copies of Volume 2 of Modern Huntsman at the end of this podcast. “Training can happen on your couch, in your living room. Don’t think of how everything is going to go right. Think of what can go wrong.” — Ryan Gresham“I can’t even imagine what that’s like.”How many times have you seen a tragedy on national news and said that? Often? Well, today’s guest is here to tell you that maybe you should try imagining. Ryan Gresham knows a lot of about marketing, sales, and guns. His show runs a ton of different media opportunities, from podcasts to video to apps, and some of that content is around conceal carry. Ryan’s going to make a strong point about how you should carry yourself. How you should be thinking through worst case scenarios. And how if you know what you’d do in those worst case scenarios, you can turn worst case into best case.Ryan and I chat through all things gun related, and I even ask him about a product that’s been in the news lately, one that I just can’t quite get behind, even has a guy who owns and shoots a dozen guns or so myself. Ryan has good answer on that topic, too. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, I met Ryan through POMA. So many of you ask me how to get involved in the outdoors, and if you have asked me and haven’t looked into POMA, then I have to question how bad you really want it. This is a fantastic organization to help you get involved in the industry and meet people who could be your future employers, clients or partners. Check them out. “This year I got a wakeup call. We were going to a fire and there’s fire everywhere. On both sides of the highway. And it felt like I was in the apocalypse.”— Lexi QuinnThe word courage gets tossed around so much it almost loses its meaning. Does it really take courage to tell your boss they’re wrong? Maybe some. But if that is courage, maybe the word courage falls short of today’s guest. Imagine running into the face of danger while everyone else flees to protect property that isn’t yours, a wildland that isn’t your home, and with people you don’t know all that well. That’s what Lexi Quinn does for a living. Lexi is a wildland firefighter and has been fighting fires like those in California right now for years. We’re going to dive deep into what it took to pursue her dream and fascination with flame, where she finds her courage from and she’s going to tell some terrifying tales along the way. Lexi also explains how forest fires impact our vegetation and habitat, which I found really interesting. We chat her job for a while, then it gets deep. Lexi and I talk about mental wellbeing, freedom, being yourself, social media and hunter recruitment. She’s on assignment in Northern California and only has a couple of days off at a time. We're grateful for her time. Restless Native needed its own home. So we built a new website that has all of the shows, merchandise, info about the team, and our contact info. You can check out this slick new website by visiting everrestless.com. Check out those fire shelters Lexi talked about in the show.Lexi's blog (in the works).Learn about becoming a wildland firefighter.Restless Native is Sponsored by Houston Safari Club FoundationIt's time to book your trip to Texas for Houston Safari Club Foundation’s convention. "My marshal turns around and says, 'Hey Buddy." I turn around, and his face is ghost white. He's bent over in pain and says, 'You see that bank over there? We gotta go. Right now.' " — John HunterThis episode's a funny one.We have John Hunter returning. You may recall John if you follow professional fishing. This year he fished the FLW, and he's fished the Bassmaster Elite Series, too. He's also GoWild's Chief Strategy Officer, meaning he heads up all things related to our product strategy when it comes to hunting and fishing. And as if he wasn't busy enough, he started a little company called Graph Glass. We'll catch up on how the season treated John, and quickly dive into questions from users. You'll hear Brad stumble through your very specific fishing questions, admit he uses a godawful fishing reel setup, and then comes some hilarious stories from John. “When I want something, I’m going to do it. It keeps me up at night. I try, and if it fails, I’ll try again.” — Brad SmithIt’s hard to pinpoint when change is happening. It feels like it’s always happening and never happening. But in the age of storytelling and media, it’s happening right now. This interview is going to dig into that. What happens when an entity that is nearly synonymous with the Internet and freedom of speech decides to censor content? Hate speech is one thing, but what about when it's just something the entity doesn't like but it's totally legal? That's hunting. It will be interesting to see how digital censorship plays out.Now this episode isn’t all conspiracy theory discussion. That’s actually just a small part of it. But it was a part that's unique and extremely relevant to some things happening in the industry right now.Today’s guest is Brad Smith. Many of you will know Brad from his work with Wide Open Spaces, as well as for being the Founder of Walton Rods. We’ll hear Brad’s journey into both of these ventures today.Get ready. "Life is a film reel, not a snapshot."— Eric ClarkEric Clark is the founder of Where to Hunt. He's built the app as a side hustle, and today, we're talking about how he's pursuing making it his full-time job.The American Dream is synonymous with this mental picture of rainbows and pots of gold. But in reality, the American Dream is like the weather: Rainbows don’t come until the storm passes.Chasing that dream is hard. It’s more challenging than I ever thought. It weighs on me more than I tell people. Having the responsibilities of being the catalyst for a company—the make it happen person, the ideator, the chief of sales and head honcho of finance? All of that comes with a lot of stress in hopes of a reward. Those rewards vary—some do it to get rich, while some do it just in hopes of supporting their family while doing what they love. The stress is ubiquitous either way.I’ve talked about those challenges a lot on this show from my perspective with GoWild. Today I am pumped to bring on a tech entrepreneur in the outdoors space who is going to give us his perspective. "I gave myself three years. If this show wasn't profitable in three years, then I probably didn't belong on television. I kept it real. I was honest. And it's working out pretty well."- Gus Congemi, Host of Live the Wild LifeNetworking and relationships can take you a long ways.Today we’re talking to a guy who will time and time again echo this statement. Make sure you don’t just have talent, you better build some relationships along the way.I wasn’t too familiar with Gus Congemi, the host of the show Live the Wild Life, until I started working with Arcus for GoWild. And really, I hadn’t had a chance to really dive into his content until recently when I started preparing for this chat. What I found was I really liked Gus’ content and Gus. As a hunter, he’s very different than a lot of the personalities out there. And his show has a lot to like about it. Somewhere in watching four or five episodes for prep, I kind of forgot I was prepping and just found myself along for the ride.If you aren’t familiar with his show, I’m willing to bet some of you have seen a famous shot of Gus staring down a 10 foot tall brown bear with his bow in hand. It’s an epic photograph and even better story. Gus is going to tell that tale and quite a few more. As many of you know, GoWild has partnered with From Field to Plate and SIXSITE to promote hunter recruitment with a sweepstakes valued at over $4,500. The sweepstakes ran for 2 months, and collectively generated nearly 3,000 new hunters and anglers for 2018."I know this is a drop in the bucket in what the industry needs, but we're proud to be working with people and brands who understand that if we all just work together, these small efforts can eventually create bucket loads of new hunters and anglers," said GoWild Co-Founder Brad Luttrell. "For being as young of a company as we are, we're proud to see our little ol' community be this activated and inspired to jump in and solve this R3 issue."Team GoWild sat down on August 1 and called one random winner for the sweepstakes. You can listen to the episode above to see who won and just how that announcement went. The winner will join GoWild Co-Founders Brad Luttrell and Donovan Sears on an all-expense-paid hunting trip to Texas, where wild game chef Jeremiah Doughty will teach his process of hunting, butchering and cooking whitetail. SIXSITE will outfit the winner in their USA-made, high-quality camo."We want to give back to those who are giving," said Doughty. "I want to be a part of the winner's life, because this will be a person who is pledging to help make an impact."Note: There is no video. “You can’t blame hunters for the creation of humans.”— Lincoln Tapp, Bowhunter & Host of YoungWildLincoln Tapp has become pretty well known within the hunting community. He’s currently chasing a goal that’s almost synonymous with his name. He’s spent a third of his life traveling across North America in an attempt to become the youngest person to harvest 29 of North America’s Big Game Animals. At 12 years old, Lincoln became the youngest known archer to harvest the Stone Sheep. He checked another box at 14 when he became the youngest archer to harvest the Super 10 of North American Big Game, and he also completed his archery Grand Slam with the Four North American Wild Sheep, which means he harvested Dall’s, Stone’s Sheep, Rocky Mountain Bighorn and Desert Bighorn sheep.Lincoln is also the host of “YoungWild” which you can find on the Outdoor Channel.I think about how young he is, and I'm so impressed and optimistic. This isn't your typical celebrity. This is a guy whose peers are thinking of prom dates and their first cars. So if we slow down and realize how far ahead he is from a typical person his age, he feels 20 years ahead of his time. This is a great conversation with a young man I'm now proud to know. “It hit me that if this could happen to a 10 year old, it could be me. For a minute I was lost, not knowing what to do next. Since my experience going hunting, I’ve done things I would have never done before.”— Marcus Stiggers, SIXSITEWhen I look at our industry, I’m inspired most by brands that market through empowerment, not impossibility. SIXSITE is one of those brands.Stephen Holley, the founder, understands that he makes a high end product, but he also understands the market well. He’s marketing to a new generation of hunters. And he’s marketing to a generation that’s largely untapped. While SIXSITE does make high-quality gear, the organization understands the lay of the land. "People have failure. People should know that. If they come into this and think they're going to have a 100% success—they're not. Learning from your failures makes you a better hunter. And that has to happen."— Kimmi GreentreeSome of you know today’s guest because of her husband. But in a little over an hour, you’ll see she stands out on her own.Prior to my interview, I admired Kimmi Greentree's authenticity and self awareness. Her social media profiles are hilarious and I liked her. But in a very impersonal way, similar to how you might think a comedian is funny. Or how you might like to follow a social media account because they post good memes. But after this conversation, I really connected with that authenticity, and saw it being applied into the outdoors space. She doesn’t apologize for her feelings. She doesn’t apologize for not knowing something. She doesn’t apologize for disagreement, even with her husband. She doesn’t apologize for her experiences.Kimmi is Adam Greentree’s wife. Many of you will know Adam as the bowhunter who’s blown up recently. "I caught a 125 pounder, and the guide looked at it and said, 'We gotta turn it loose.'"— Bobby Stoker recapping his trip to Alaska.Today’s episode is interesting. We’re going to hear some stories from two different generations, in the same industry but approaching it from vastly different angles. Bobby Stoker is a third generation tobacco man. Jared Boyce, better known by many as simply “Outlaw,” is a famous YouTuber in the tobacco and outdoors space.I recently fished with both of these guys in Alaska, chasing King Salmon, Halibut, Lingcod, and yes, even those unworthy little black bass (more on that in the show). We had a great time, and one night we decided to bust out the podcast and video gear and record a conversation.I've worked with Bobby and Stokers a lot over the years, but I wasn’t sure what to expect when I met Jared. I was pretty sure this guy was a content creating genius, having tapped into a perfect niche—one that was underserved on the content perspective, and one he understood well.Jared is as I expected—very intelligent, and there's more to him than you can get from his YouTube channel. That said, his YouTube channel is full of hilarious parody and wild hunting and fishing content, so be sure to check that out. This interview closes out in the weirdest way. I can’t even tease it. You just have to listen to it to find out what happened. It was completely unscripted and unpredictable. I mean, you can’t predict or set this up. If you don’t believe it’s real, find Jared’s youtube channel and watch the video. I haven’t seen his video yet but I can’t imagine this part didn’t make it in.More about Stoker's and future sweepstakesJared on YouTubeJared's Video from this ShowEnter the From Field to Plate Sweepstakes Win a Free HuntMake sure you check out our sweepstakes with From Field to Plate and SIXSITE! "I can take one person hunting, but we all need to realize we're all part of a larger network. We've all got to get involved. One person is not too small to make a difference."- Joe Betar, Houston Safari ClubYou know those people you meet and connect with immediately? The ones who cause you to quickly forget you don’t know them all that well? That’s Joe Betar.Joe is today’s guest. He's with Houston Safari Club, and we caught up recently in Lincoln, Nebraska—my first trip there this year. We were both there for R3, the symposium pulled together to solve for huntings challenges, specifically when it comes to recruitment, retainment and reactivation.Joe and I really don’t know each other what I would call well. But at times in this show I forgot that, and I bet you will, too. He’s that kind of guy. Easy going. We have a lot in common, so it made chatting easy. One of those things is we have both switched industries entirely and moved into the hunting industry, coming from very different backgrounds. We also both have a passion for activating a new generation in hunting.Joe is the Executive Director at Houston Safari Club. For many of you, you’re going to be surprised what that actually means. I can almost guarantee many of you don’t know what they do. I know I didn’t know to what extent they were involved in these things.Learn more about Houston Safari ClubTake our pledge to take someone hunting or fishing and be entered for a chance to win a free hunt with Jeremiah Doughty.

“I’m here today because of the way my grandfather established this brand. I’m still riding the wave today.” — Adam WeatherbySeven decades ago, Weatherby magnums were flipping the industry on its head for their velocity and flat trajectory performance. And they’re still leading the way.Weatherby needs no intro. It’s the gun you’ve lusted for. It’s an elite brand you respect, even if you’ve never fired one or even seen one yourself. That kind of brand equity takes sweat equity. And Roy Weatherby had that and more.Today we're talking to Adam Weatherby, the President of Weatherby and grandson of Roy. In this episode we'll talk about the legacy and brand that Roy built, how Roy impacted his son, Ed, and Adam's journey to lead.Adam’s done a lot of podcasts, but I promise you, if you’ve heard him before, stick around. He even said at the end of the show, he’s never done a show like this.DON'T MISS THE FROM FIELD TO PLATE SWEEPSTAKES, SPONSORED BY SIXSITEAlso, make sure you check out our sweepstakes with From Field to Plate and SIXSITE! "There are no sacred cows here. Do you care about preserving a memory, or do you care about preserving a lifestyle?"— Buck RobinsonI met Buck Robinson very early into my journey with GoWild. We're both entrepreneurs, but he's a few years ahead of our team with GoWild in our journey. I've admired him and his team's ability to scale and bring their vision to life.Team GoWild fully believes in what Buck is doing. You've heard it before—access is one of the toughest challenges for hunters. Outdoor Access not only solves for that in a way that's extremely affordable for outdoorsmen, it's benefiting the land owners, too. It's not all peaches and cream, though. Buck outlines his growing pains, too.Buck and I will discuss the reason we were together—the R3 Conference. We'll share our criticism of the effort, along with what we found hopeful. We talk through an interesting way to get new people outside for the first time, and you might just already have it in your closet.Buck is a great, hilarious dude. I had a great time chatting with him. I'll leave you with this:"Hunting isn't about something dying. It's about something living, within you." - Buck

"I thought, 'there's gotta be a better way.' So I said, I'm going to start something to teach people to go from field to plate, with respect, honor and integrity."- Jeremiah Doughty, From Field to PlateThis show is with someone with a lot of drive. And talent. And maybe most importantly, a guy with a passion for helping others experience the outdoors. For episode 13, we welcome Jeremiah Doughty, who many of you would probably be more likely to recognize as the "From Field to Plate" guy. He’s a hunter, angler and amazing chef, and in this episode, we'll talk about his path to becoming a guy who's sponsored by some major brands in the industry, as well as how he's turned down more money because to him, it's about the people, not the paycheck.Jeremiah's version of success is probably different from many. He doesn’t care about the Insta-fame. He doesn’t care about the logos that show up at the end of his YouTube videos. To him, it's about helping people, and working with people he cares about.I admire that.Jeremiah doesn’t shy away from his passion for food, his strong faith and his natural desire to hunt. He’s an educator. He’s an inspiration. And after the last year of inappropriate jokes and texting with him as if he’s my personal chef, I’m proud to call him a friend. We'll talk about his background, a few of his favorite hunts, path to big game chef, and we'll answer questions from users. We also have some big announcements at the end of this show, so stay tuned!Relevant Links:Jeremiah’s siteJeremiah’s dove blog about his daughterVenison meatballsHunt for a Cure

“When we get a bird, that’s when I’m going to decide. Am I really a hunter? Or am I a nature photographer?"- Chris GleimThis show's a little different. I documented my co-founder's first hunting experience. You'll hear the excitement in his voice pre-hunt, the self doubt and curiosity of what it will be like to take an anima's life, and the overall the highs and lows hunters deal with. It's an honest, first-hand account of what it is like to try hunting for the first time.Chris Gleim is the Chief Development Officer at GoWild. He's an avid hiker and outdoors enthusiast. And now, he's a hunter.Since working on GoWild, he had gotten more and more interested in hunting culture, and decided he wanted to go himself. So we decided to make it happen this turkey season and document the experience.I wanted to do this to encourage all of you to take someone hunting for the first time. As I type these show notes, I'm coming out of the R3 Symposium (Recruitment, Retainment, and Reactivation), which was held in Lincoln, Nebraska. I've spent three days listening to some of the most experienced people in the hunting industry brainstorm how they can solve the problem to stop the decline in hunters. Here's the thing: If all of you, and all of your friends, and all of their friends can start to take someone hunting for the first time every year, we can curb this ourselves. We don't need the industry to figure it out—we can be the answer.Remember, we're stronger together.Subscribe to Restless Native:iTunes | Stitcher | Google Play | Spotify | PodbeanThe New Restless Native PlaylistHave you checked out our Restless Native playlist? “We have control of how we’re perceived. We don’t have control of the prism for which that perception happens.”-Ben O'Brien, Hunting Marketing Manager, YETIPerception isn’t just important. Perception is reality.Today’s guest is outdoor philosopher, writer and the Hunting Marketing Manager at YETI, Ben O'Brien. Ben's made some waves lately with his comments on that reality for hunters. He’s known for speaking his mind, and not shying away from controversy. Beyond his commentary on grip and grins and why he doesn't share them anymore, you might have heard about a little disagreement between his employer and the NRA. He saw it all first hand. And yes, we talk about it.This show's so much more than that though. We go deep on some fresh topics with Ben. I've been a fan of Ben's for a few years now. He's a great writer, and I love how he challenges authority and common perceptions. He doesn't accept ideals just because they've existed for decades. In fact, he's the kind of guy who might find that as a reason to challenge them. We’ll talk about Ben’s background as a writer, and I surprise him with a few fun questions from a hunter most of you probably know well. If you make it to the end, I'll even introduce you to another fella named Coyote Walsh. Yep.Topics Covered:• Thoughtful conversation in hunting• The Hunting Collective, brought to you by Corona• NRA piece, “A Right to Be Human”• Who’s controlling the future of hunting?• The prism of perception• Ben’s “grip and grin” tale• Hunting with superstars & trying to stay grounded• Logical fallacies within hunting• Pittman-Robertson funds• “I’m a snowman, not a snowflake”• Social media—it’s not the problem, we are• The Yeti and the NRA…• Lanai recap and a surprise question from a celebrity• Coyote Walsh• Hunting with the ultimate hunting badasses & turkey hunting woesNRA ArticleBen's PodcastCheck out the Restless Native Spotify Playlist

"Any time I find myself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect." — Cody RichCody Rich has made a name for himself in the hunting industry. He’s got a great podcast, The Rich Outdoors, which you’ll hear us talk about. And many of you are probably here because you already know that. But that’s Cody’s story as it exist today. I want to tell you Cody’s story from before. The part where he actually broke his neck in a freak accident, and was lucky to survive. Despite being told he’d never walk again, Cody didn’t give up. And we're going to tackle that story. This show is crazy. We're not even doing show notes because it's too much to even try to document. You just gotta experience it. I promise you'll walk away inspired and motivated.

“Don’t be afraid to fail. There’s a whole bunch of learning when you’re failing.” - Chris PooreToday's show is with someone who is very important to me. Chris Poore is an angler, writer, entrepreneur and, for me and countless other people, a mentor. That's no where near descriptive enough. The guy has done so much in his life. Up until recently, he was the Student Newspaper Advisor at the University of Kentucky, which is how I met him. But after 17 years, Chris left that role recently to pursue a new career in marketing.Chris and I chatted for about an hour about all kinds of stuff. He doles out great piece of advice after great piece of advice. He gives a few cool resources that I hope you'll check into. And we even chat a little hunting, farming and fishing in here, too.I'm so proud of Chris for taking the leap of faith to start his own company, Great Stories, Inc. If you're a small business in need of marketing help, I can fully stand behind recommending Chris. Stephen Holley, a former Navy Seal and the founder of SIXSITE gear has taken an idea from his house and a side hustle to a company with a serious presence in the industry. Not only that, but Stephen’s gained all of his momentum while conquering the challenges of keeping his factories right here in the USA.As you’ll hear us discuss, he was told it shouldn’t be done. They told him he was crazy. And he'd go on to find out out why—this was hard. But through a series of iterations, failures, and improvements, he seems to have it.Stephen’s gone from a former Navy Seal ripping apart clothes in his spare time to sew them back together with his wife’s sewing machine to building a brand that’s got traction. And a big part of Stephen’s brand is that authentic, made in the USA story. This is a great conversation. “It’s better to sound intelligent, ambitious and capable than to sound available.”John Prine released a new album and as usual, it comes with some life lessons. I talk through a few songs that stood out to me on the album, and apply some of these observations in a way you might not expect—career advice. Reflecting on Prine's lyrics, I'll answer a specific email from a listener, and talk through actual tactics you can apply today to build a career in the outdoors industry.I'll also give you a single question you can ask yourself that will give you a new career trajectory. I promise you, it will change how you look at your daily routine. And I have two challenges for you at the end—so stick around.I'll dig into some great quick-hit questions from users, ranging from people who influenced me, a shift in outdoors media, high-farm fences, first-time hunters and much more.Check out the Restless Native Spotify playlist to hear songs we talk about and other favorites of mine:http://bit.ly/RestlessNativePodcast

"Why do you want people to follow you? To look at you, or to listen to what you have to say?"- Hannah BarronWhen I think of authenticity, I think of people like Hannah Barron. She’s real, she’s not trying to hide who she is. She loves her daddy, she is serious about hunting and eating some squirrels. She’s doing good ol’ fashioned, blue collar work, swinging hammers and drilling drills.I wanted to have Hannah on the show because I think while some people have worked really hard to create a life worth following, Hannah has become famous online because she’s kept it real among all of the fake BS.In a sea of inauthentic trite posts, Hannah is a beacon of authenticity and good stories. We'll hear some of those stories (and some of them are... gross). We'll also answer some user Qs at the end, so stick around to hear some hard questions. We had some technical difficulties on this one—I apologize for the audio quality. It was this or nothing, and Hannah told too many good stories not to share.Topics Covered:• Accents & Appalachian Accents• The Doe Pus Pocket• Super Soaker of Nasty Grossness• Hunting Deer in Alabama Kansas• Social Media Stars—the Good & the Bad• What’s It Mean to Be a Sportsman? "If you're going to try for something, and it makes you happy, continue to do it. I've had my fair share of messing up in life, but you have to be patient." - William EschnerWilliam Eschner is a hunter, angler and professional chef. And I do mean chef. This guy has worked at some incredible establishments, and has cooked for a ton of celebrities, whom you know (and we'll reveal their names in the show). He's worked with the James Beard House, Locali, Martha Stewart (whoops, and that's not even the celebrity I was talking about) and caters some huge events. Usually I'm impressed by a chef's specialties and/or vision for their meals. I haven't had William's food, but I've still be amazed all he's able to do within the same work week I'm dealing with. I question whether or not he's human. We'll actually talk about the possibility of non-humans cooking your food and about 100 other things. This conversation was all over the place, and it's a fun one. William and I both have a dead pan style of humor, so if at some point you feel like you missed a joke, you probably did because it was like your school's meatloaf—too dry. Sorry. We also hit a Q&A at the end of the show. Be sure to stick around to see if I answered your question. If you want to ask a question for the next show, just let me know. My email isn't hard to track down.Notes:• Cooking without recipes.• Poke sallet will kill you.• Innovation & William's background.• How our food pallets change & the Millennial impact on restaurants.• Meeting Chevy Chase & how to make honey.• Protecting the hive by getting bears drunk.• The Super Soaker 50 & the swarm attack’s Brad’s neighbor’s house and Brad’s eternal grounding.• Brewing beer and buying breweries.• Strapping babies to your chest for upland hunts.• Is turkey hunting hard or does Brad just suck? Well, we know hunting deer is hard, unless the deer hunts you.• William’s favorite cut of venison. And is wild meat actually gamey?•Processing your own meat is the way to go. Oh, and eating the balls.• Making millions in the restaurant game.• High end, gourmet dog treats? Yes.• The process of brining and how that works.• What’s tongue taste like on your tongue?• Parting thoughts (and more about the drunken bear)

"Hunters are not banding together to support the ultimate cause of continuing the tradition." - Scott EllisScott Ellis is one of the most deadly turkey hunters to carry a gun into the woods. His pedigree is incredible, and while that's part of why we wanted to have him on the show, that's not what we're talking about with Scott. We get into Scott's history.A quick online search of "Scott Ellis Turkey Calling" and you'll find more content than you even know what to do with. Scott's show and app alone is enough to teach you how to hunt. But we wanted to know how you become so influential in the industry. How does one go from a young squirrel huntin' Scotty to a three-time Grand National Champion turkey caller?Funny enough, we actually barely talk turkey hunting in this show. We actually get passionately into the topic of humanity. You'll hear Scott and me get into a disagreement around this topic. I won't spoil it, but I think it's worth listening to the show just to hear us hash through it.At the end of the show we hash through some questions from GoWild users, covering some topics from last week's show, as well as some updates to the app itself.Topics covered:• Young Scotty as a squirrel hunter• Scott's tour in the army• Dictatorship in North Korea• Conservation, and where do we go from here?• Squirrel hunting disasters• Brad almost falling into a waterfall while squirrel hunting• Hunting numbers dropping• Archers vs. archers, hunter vs. hunter• Hunting for your family vs. agriculture.• Vegans have more in common with hunters than they do apart• Turkey hunting, the gateway drug to hunting• The importance of mentorship• Scott’s new app Turkey Tech• Legacy of hunting• Humanity and how we feel when we harvest an animalRelevant links from the interview:Podcast with Scott on Hunting MastersScott joining Cody RichTurkey Tech App, made by Scott Ellis

“Failure is what drives us." - John HunterThis show might be with a bass fisherman, but we barely talk fishing. It’s about John’s failures, and how they drive his success. You don’t need to know a thing about fishing to walk away from my talk with John feeling inspired and motivated. It’s amazing to hear about his lifestyle and schedule. It leaves you wondering how in the world he can do it. The only answer I have for you? John is ever restless.Specifically, we’ll dive into the explosion of college fishing, John's crazy schedule, trading a dirt bike for a boat, the athleticism behind what John does, his humble beginnings, how to approach a company and show them you’re worth sponsoring, John’s new company, how to manage your sleep, tapping your creativity, and Hunter S. Thompson’s ability to do 12 hours of drugs before crafting his work. We don’t recommend it.Learn more about John’s new company:https://graphglass.com/
