It was through experiencing what doesn't work that she learned what does work: living in complete integrity and committing to living your purpose. Now she's built her dream business around it, and wants to help you do the same.

Meet Robert Teschner.
His WHY is Contribute.
Interviewed by WHY Institute Founder Dr. Gary Sanchez (Better Way).
Robert Teschner, callsign “Cujo”, is a retired Air Force fighter pilot. He was the top F-15C “Eagle” graduate in his class at the USAF Weapons Instructor Course—the Air Force version of “TOP GUN”. Cujo was asked to return as a Weapons School Instructor and subsequently became the Air Force’s subject matter expert on team accountability, something high-performance teams refer to as a “Debrief”. Cujo eventually commanded one of America’s very few operational F-22A “Raptor” squadrons. During his Air Force career, Cujo flew combat missions over Iraq, homeland defense missions in the United States, and deployed with his F-22 squadron across the Pacific. In 2014 Cujo was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. This adversity fundamentally changed his trajectory—he went from accepting a leadership position in the F-22, to retiring early and having to figure out how to provide for his family with a body that was broken. Cujo’s unexpected pivot out of the Air Force is a topic he tackles in his work with organizations looking to build resilience, develop team members with grit and the ability to overcome adversity. Cujo now teaches leaders how to embrace the tenets of high-performance teamwork in their businesses to achieve better performance, drive engagement and accomplish their missions. He has simplified and adapted the tactics, techniques and procedures high-performance teams use to help any organization win bigger and build teams that work. Cujo is the author of the national bestselling book Debrief to Win and is an increasingly in-demand keynote speaker.

Meet Lenny Fresquez.
His WHY is Right Way.
Interviewed by WHY Institute Founder Dr. Gary Sanchez (Better Way).
Lenny Fresquez is a dreamer. The notion of wealth awed him. “I’d just see these crazy things on TV and said ’I’m going to do that too,’” now CEO of Fresquez Companies, a 430-employee operation that includes airport concession, restaurant, and boxing promotion businesses. Fresquez dropped out of Valley High during his sophomore year because he didn’t feel he was learning marketable skills. Fresquez was still a teenager when he started his first business – a landscaping business – and when he started dating Linda, his future wife. She’s been the supportive-but-grounding force in his life ever since. Fresquez went on to acquire – and ultimately sell – 16 Arby’s. Today Fresquez owns many different restaurants and is also the master concessionaire at the Albuquerque International Sunport, and has contracts for airport eateries in Tulsa, Okla., and El Paso.
Approached about sponsoring Albuquerque Hall of Fame boxer Danny Romero in the mid-1990s, Fresquez decided to try being a promoter. He promoted his first fight card nearly 20 years ago. He made money and got hooked.Whereas he once worked with up to 40 fighters, his main focus now is former world champion and UFC Fighter Holly Holm.
Fresquez is lightening his load around the office, too. Although semi-retired he still works about 40 hours a week – well below his previous average of 80-100 – but has taken up golf and is living part-time in Maui. It’s a good life, he says – one even a dreamer like Fresquez couldn’t imagine.

Meet Elizabeth Buckley
Her WHY is Mastery
Interviewed by WHY Institute Founder Dr. Gary Sanchez (Better Way)
Elizabeth Buckley is a second-generation tapestry artist and teacher of over 50 years. Her work evolved from using techniques of the Mexican and Rio Grande traditions to those of French tapestry. She further honed her skills in Aubusson, France at the atelier of Gisèle Brivet.
With her degree in art, Elizabeth brings to the classroom her deep grounding in design principles and color theory that specifically apply to tapestry. She draws from multiple tapestry traditions to provide her students with the techniques and vocabulary for finding and expressing their own unique voice.
Elizabeth Buckley’s tapestries have a lengthy exhibition history, including national and Canadian juried and invitational shows, as well as in museum exhibitions. Her work is in numerous private collections, and was featured in the Fiber Art Now article on “An Artist’s Sense of Place,” Fall 2017 issue. Her publications include: FiberArts Design Book V and Carol K. Russell’s The Tapestry Handbook: the Next Generation, and Contemporary International Tapestry. In 2011, Elizabeth was awarded the American Tapestry Alliance Award for Excellence in Tapestry.
For Elizabeth Buckley, tapestry weaving is a universal, non-verbal language that transcends generations, cultures, and locale.
“As I developed my verbal language skills in English as my primary language, and in French as my secondary language, my eyes and hands were becoming fluent in the non-verbal languages of woven structures and color. In many ways, the language of the loom became my mother tongue, as my initial thoughts tend to come as images, colors, textures and techniques before I translate them into words. I automatically think in this non-verbal language.”

Meet Damon West
His WHY is Contribute
Interviewed by WHY Institute Founder Dr. Gary Sanchez (Better Way)
DAMON WEST, M.S. Criminal Justice, is a motivational speaker and best-selling co-author (with best-selling author and motivational speaker Jon Gordon) of The Coffee Bean: A simple Lesson to Create Positive Change. His first book and autobiography, The Change Agent: How a Former College QB Sentenced to Life in Prison Transformed His World, was published just three years after his release from a Texas maximum-security prison.
Sentenced to sixty-five years in a Texas prison, Damon West once had it all. He came from a great family, in a home full of God, love, support, and opportunities to reach any goal. A natural born leader, an athlete with good looks and charm, he appeared to be the all-American kid pursuing his dreams.
Underneath this facade, however, was an addict in the early stages of disease. After suffering childhood sexual abuse by a babysitter at the age of nine, Damon began putting chemicals into his body to alter the way he felt.
Once he was introduced to methamphetamines, however, he became instantly hooked—and the lives of so many innocent people would forever be changed by the choices he made in order to feed his insatiable meth habit.
After a fateful discussion during his incarceration with a seasoned convict, Damon had a spiritual awakening. He learned that, like a coffee bean changing with the application of heat and pressure, he was capable of changing the environment around him. Armed with a program of recovery, a renewed faith, and a miraculous second chance at life, Damon emerged from over seven years of prison a changed man. His story of redemption, grit and determination continues to inspire audiences today.
Today, Damon lives a life of recovery and service, going to meetings and sharing his story all over the country with schools, church’s, athletic teams, corporations, conferences and inside correctional facilities. Over the past few years, he has been sharing the Coffee Bean lesson with dozens of college football teams such as Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas, and countless schools and businesses. His “Be a coffee bean” message has inspired thousands, winning him the Service to Mankind Award in 2017.
Professionally, he works as a legal assistant for the Provost Umphrey Law Firm in Beaumont, Texas and is an adjunct professor of criminal justice at the University of Houston Downtown.
Damon’s message connects with audiences on a level rarely before seen, as evidenced by the lengthy and thought-provoking Q&A following each presentation. His ability to articulate his story is proof that sometimes they lock-up the right person.
Damon’s story has been featured both nationally and globally. His second book, The Coffee Bean, co-authored with best-selling author Jon Gordon, became an instant best-seller. Damon is passionate about the Coffee Bean message, and loves sharing how it changed his life and how it can change yours, too.
“It is my hope that my story, my example, can show others they are capable of way more than they think. In order to stem the flow of pain in society, it is incumbent upon each of us, whether in life, in school or in business, to be like the coffee bean from my story.” – Damon West

More recently, Rob has set up and founded his own podcast, called Go All In. Scott Mann spent 23 years in the United States Army, 18 of those as a Green Beret in Army Special Forces, where he specialized in unconventional, high-impact missions all over the world including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Scott’s problem-solving abilities were honed during long deployments in places where trust was absent, conflict rampant, and only seconds to make real
connections with local communities using his head, his heart—and when threats closed in against these communities—his hands. With those skills, Scott now helps organizations gain a better understanding of their internal culture and their external relationships, while exposing the potential for conflict that exists when trust has deteriorated.
In the same way he empowered local tribes in Iraq and Afghanistan to make transformative decisions—using very few resources, Scott teaches corporate leaders, special operators, law enforcement, and high-performance entrepreneurs and their teams to create strategic opportunities through the

Meet Chris Davis
His WHY is Trust
Interviewed by WHY Institute Founder Dr. Gary Sanchez (Better Way)
From Robotic To Relationships
You should never break the trust of a "Trust WHY" because it takes a lot to earn that trust back. Today's story explains how a Trust WHY thrives and what holds them back.
Chris had what seemed like a great life: the corporate dream job and the title that impressed family and friends. We all know, that there's always more under the surface and for Chris the veneer was starting to crack open. His work felt robotic, more like a cog in a wheel than a contributing member in a relationship. But with a wife and three kids to support to he couldn't just walk away. So, the lack of trust grew and along with it the unhappiness. Then, the ground opened up and everything fell apart. He lost his fancy corporate job. He had to restart everything. How would he find a new career where he could trust his team again?
His broken trust sent him into a crisis of faith in the corporate world and in his new industry of marketing technology. It took a deep dive into meeting a wide variety of people making deep connections using marketing automation and a lot of self-reflection. As his trust grew back relationship by relationship his love for his work started blooming again. His trust in the tools he was teaching made him the go to source for marketing automation. When you build a relationship with a Trust WHY, they'll pour their knowledge and ability into helping you. That's exactly what makes Chris Davis such an amazing educator for Active Campaign.

Meet Charles Ashley
His WHY is Better Way
Interviewed by WHY Institute Founder Dr. Gary Sanchez (Better Way)
A Better Way To Teach The World
Computer Science is not readily available in tribal, rural, and under served areas. How can children from these areas compete in a digital world if they're denied access to early education? They can't! It's an unfair situation.
Our guest today, Charles Ashley, set out to fix that. He founded a company that teaches children basic computer science skills to foster their education. They even give these children laptops! Charles's work seems almost to good to be true. How did he make it a reality? He dug into everything a child would need to know in 8 weeks to have a resume, build an app, have a portfolio. He created a workshop to teach them each of these things in a short period. He found diverse funding sources to make this possible.
Now, parents and grandparents are being moved to tears watching what their children are capable of. A brighter future for families and communities is emerging across the US thanks to Charles and his drive to find a better way.

Meet Steve Gray
His WHY is Right Way
He has:
Steve’s Story:He has always been observant. This habit helped him observe the market when he was just a teenager. When he was a high school student, he analyzed how the online world was expanding with various ventures.
He founded TexZus Capital Ventures, a marketing agency, in 2004. In 2013, his company provided strategic marketing that facilitated a small startup, Nutra, to scale immensely. The company reached revenue over $20M in its first year in business.
In 2012, he founded PrimalLabs to serve people with natural health information along with supplements. It's a rapidly growing company. It was listed two times on the Inc 5000s fastest growing companies list.
In 2013, he co-founded Ultimate Survival Strategies. It is a business that aids its customers in handling the following 5 pillars of survival: defense, food, power, shelter, and water. In 2016, he started a brewing company. To say Steve is a serial entrepreneur is an understatement! Here are some takeaways from the interview with Steve.
Start analyzing earlier:He not only started analyzing businesses early but also started working early, as a student. He graduated in 2002 and already had a few years experience working online. When he graduated, he immediately had job offers.
Make life predictable by controlling what you do:According to him, it makes life easier when you make your purpose and passion your career. Founding a company may be an easy task but running it successfully requires a lot of work in the right direction. "Don’t be so serious" and "don’t be so impatient." Those were the words he often heard growing up from well-meaning family and friends. But as any entrepreneur knows, his focus and a sense of urgency are what ultimately pushed his goals forward.
His business big three rules are:1. Do what you say you are going to do
Add value and build something that matters
You can’t lose by being generous
Steve is the perfect example of how to get results if your WHY is "Right Way."References:

Joe is proud of all his accomplishments, but most of all he is proud of his purpose, his beautiful amazing kids.
Trying to Find Your Personal BrandJoe was looking for a way to brand himself.
He had always heard, “You can only grow your business as much as you can grow yourself.” Joe took that to heart and wanted to unearth how he could get more comfortable speaking and being the face of his business. He was afraid of putting his photo online because of the internal fear that people would judge him; the fear and self-doubt hung over his head.
He knew he had to find a better way to get out of his comfort zone.
Joe worked with a coach that took him on a journey of self-discovery to find his strengths, his personal values, the frustrations that hold him back and successes he has experienced. He put it all together which helped him understand himself and answer the question “Who is Joe?”
From Frustration to AcceptanceWhen Joe finally discovered his WHY, to find a better way and to share it, everything made sense. Joe was often frustrated that he would start things and not finish them. When he got to 80%, he would want to start something else. It was a constant pursuit for a better way – and there is an endless amount of better ways he could find!
Joe felt he always made things more challenging for everyone around him because he was always changing and improving and changing and improving. Do you know someone like this?
Once he discovered his WHY, he started loving himself. He suddenly saw that thing that made him special – his ability to find a better way.
He joined Entrepreneur’s Organization and realized there are a lot of others in the entrepreneurial space who processed things the SAME WAY AS HIM! Joe focused on bringing the right people in to help cover the areas he was not the best at. Their WHY was Joe’s how or what. He realized that he would be successful with the right people around him, and with the WHY as his guide he was successful.
Joe went from seeing his WHY as a curse to seeing it as a wonderful gift – meant to be shared.
Increasing Impact with the WHYNow, Joe coaches other entrepreneurs so they can have a massive impact in their life. He walks them through:
Joe mentioned, “Once you accept it and get proud of your strengths and weaknesses, you are at your best. You have to know who you are… then your passion and enthusiasm show.”
Transformation is about you being you, but you first have to know who you are. And this is where the WHY comes in to help you know who you are. Know your WHY with the WHY App – or if you already know your WHY, get started on the Personal WHY Formula Course so you can develop your WHY-HOW-WHAT so you have the words to clearly articulate YOU!
When to Step BackSometimes, you have to step back if you’re a better way person. You have to let other people take over.
“Micromanage the process not the people” – Joe
Joe had a coach tell him, “Coaching without permission is criticism.” Focusing on this in interactions is a great way to increase empathy!
Joe recommends practicing these steps to increase your empathy:
For better way people, the key is to ask permission to gage what people need.
The Endgame For Better Way PeopleBetter way people are constantly looking for a better way. So much so that it can be exhausting. But for better way people to reach the end, they have to say “That’s good enough.” Once you say that, you can turn it over to someone else to handle it.
You have to find where you will feel fulfillment with a good enough mentality, then you can move on to the next thing.
