Interim Police Chief Rade Vanic did tell the Honolulu Police Commission on Wednesday that investigators “haven’t determined or we don’t have sufficient evidence to show that the child was abducted.” He added, “We are hoping she isn’t in immediate danger.”

CDC forecasts for Hawaii show an overall downward trend for COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths through mid-October.

Gov. Ige and Dr. Libby Char, the state Health Department director, plead with the public to change their behavior to help stop the spread of the highly contagious delta variant.

As Hawaii reported its highest COVID case count since the start of the pandemic on Friday, Gov. David Ige pleaded with the public, saying it’s time to start changing behaviors and stop gathering as the delta variant spreads rapidly in the community.

Ige reiterated that even though some of the cases were numbers that would’ve been reported Wednesday and Thursday due to an interruption in an electronic lab reporting system, the fact remains that 1,167 additional people are infected by COVID. And the overwhelming majority of them are unvaccinated.

As the case count grows in Hawaii, hospital beds are filling up fast -- this can especially be seen at the Hilo Medical Center.

An investigation is underway after police fatally shot a suspect with a machete in Kalihi early Wednesday.

Authorities said officers were first dispatched to a parking lot near a game room on School Street around 2:30 a.m. after reports of a man who was slashed in his hand. Police said his finger was cut off.

Other jurisdictions, including California and New York City, have already moved ahead in mandating the vaccine for government workers and testing for those who refuse.

A judge denied a motion Tuesday afternoon to throw out a case against three Honolulu police officers charged with murder in a teen’s fatal shooting.

Three officers charged in a teen’s fatal shooting will appear in court Tuesday afternoon as a judge hears motions to throw out the case and disqualify a deputy prosecutor.

Hearings for the officers will start at 1:30 p.m. at District Court.

The three officers are charged in the April shooting of 16-year-old Iremamber Sykap.

Officer Geoffrey Thom is charged with second-degree murder, while officers Zackary Ah Nee and Christopher Fredeluces face second-degree attempted murder charges. A grand jury declined to indict the officers, but the city Prosecutor’s Office moved forward with charges against the three.

Big Island police fatally shot a man in Hilo on Friday after he attacked them with a machete, injuring one of the responding officers, authorities said.

Gov. David Ige on Thursday suggested the state could drop all COVID restrictions even before reaching a 70% vaccination rate.

“If we see the case counts drop before we hit 70 percent, then that’s another way that we would drop all restrictions,” Ige said, in a news conference.

“It is about the virus activity, how much virus is circulating in our community, and what the health care capacity of our community is that would determine when the restrictions get released.”

That would essentially mean no more indoor mask mandate, no more travel restrictions and no more capacity limits.

The state has been averaging 47 cases a day for the past seven days.

It’s unclear how low Ige wants to see the case count drop before lifting restrictions.

As of Thursday, 56% of residents were fully vaccinated.

Previously, Ige said all COVID restrictions in Hawaii would essentially end when the state reaches 70% — and that he was confident it would hit that benchmark by the end of the summer.

However, he has also admitted that vaccine demand has dropped again.

He said the state is currently preparing for the 60% vaccination milestone. When that happens, trans-Pacific travelers who have been vaccinated in other states will be able to skip pre-travel testing and quarantine requirements.

The Hawaii Department of Health announced Monday that the state will continue the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. It was paused for 11 days while the CDC and FDA examined the risk of blood clots for people who received the vaccine.

Following an hours-long standoff Monday, Big Island police have arrested the suspect in a fatal shooting in Puna. The shooting happened about 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Aloha Estates neighborhood.

The verdict set off jubilation around the city. People instantly flooded the surrounding streets downtown, running through traffic with banners. Cars blared their horns. Floyd family members who had gathered at a Minneapolis conference room could be heard cheering and even laughing.

The jury of six white people and six Black or multiracial people came back with its verdict after about 10 hours of deliberations over two days. Chauvin was found guilty on all charges: second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

His face was obscured by a COVID-19 mask, and little reaction could be seen beyond his eyes darting around the courtroom. His bail was immediately revoked and he was led away with his hands cuffed behind his back. Sentencing will be in two months.

Defense attorney Eric Nelson followed Chauvin out of the courtroom without comment.

As the judge asked jurors if they reached a verdict, a hush fell on the crowd 300 strong in a park adjacent to the courthouse, with people listening to the proceedings on their cellphones. When the final guilty verdict was announced, the crowd roared, many people hugging, some shedding tears.

An announcement from Gov. Ige on a vaccine passport program could happen Tuesday. The governor hinted at it starting with interisland travel first.

The Honolulu Police Department has released body cam footage of a police shooting that left a 29-year-old man dead.

Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard said Thursday that the reason police officers fatally shot a man in Nuuanu was clear: He was putting their lives in jeopardy.

But some say that the police department needs to start quickly releasing the body cam footage to justify their actions for this shooting and others and to address community concerns.

Police were called to the home on Coelho Way when residents claimed the suspect — identified by family as 29-year-old Lindani Myeni — walked into their home, removed his shoes, and started talking to them. HPD said he had no weapons and no criminal record.

Ballard said when officers arrived, he charged them and repeatedly punched them, and a Taser failed to stop him. The officers shot the suspect multiple times, Ballard said, after he repeatedly punched officers, including one who sustained multiple facial fractures and a concussion.

Vaccinated trans-Pacific travelers won't have to take a second test after arriving on Hawaii Island. The county says it will be the first in the state to do this under the Safe Travels program.

One of the police officers, the first on the scene, sustained multiple facial fractures and a concussion. He was last listed in stable condition, but remains hospitalized.

“This person seriously injured our officers and their lives were in jeopardy,” she said.

The suspect was identified by family as Lindani Myeni. His wife said they have two children, and that he is originally from South Africa. They moved to the islands in January.

A Capitol Police officer was killed Friday after a man rammed a car into two officers at a barricade outside the U.S. Capitol and then emerged wielding a knife. It was the second line-of-duty death this year for a department still struggling to heal from the Jan. 6 insurrection.

A fire ripped through a home in East Oahu overnight. All residents were accounted for, and no one was injured.
