Is modern footwear destroying our health?
Most of us never think about our feet. But what if weak arches, bad posture, and even chronic pain are linked to the shoes we wear every day? Could the key to fixing energy, inflammation, and resilience start from the ground up?
In this conversation, I’m joined by Joshua J. Holland—holistic trainer, health coach, and author of The Awareness Shift—to uncover the science of barefoot living, grounding, and the 5 pillars of health that can transform your body.
This isn’t just theory. Joshua blends decades of functional movement training, ancestral living, and modern science to reveal how reconnecting with the earth can restore strength, balance, and vitality.
Together, we discuss:
❏ Why modern shoes are weakening us
❏ The hidden science of grounding (earthing) and inflammation
❏ The safe way to transition into barefoot shoes
❏ Joshua’s 5 pillars of optimal health
❏ How to reconnect with nature in a modern world

What a beautiful conversation this week with flow state master and high performance coach, Kevin Orosz. Kevin embodies a realisation of reality that he has developed through studying philosophy in the west and being guided by ancient mystics in the east. He has combined these two world view into a understandable and approachable structure in order to help people around the world to get to their truth. The biggest take out from this conversation is that "The solution to everything is listen to you intuition". Listen to the episode to find out how.
Kevin's Bio
After a post-graduation spiritual awakening, Kevin left his home tribe of Texas in 2012. Instead of pursuing his PhD in Psychology, he was called to Northern California to study the human mind and ancient traditions of eastern philosophy. Soon after, his travels led him on an epic quest throughout Southeast Asia, Thailand, India, and Nepal. While there, he studied under mystics in the B. K. S. Iyengar Yoga style and the Osho meditation tradition.
As a result of his learnings, he realized a synergy between Eastern & Western mysticism relating to his own personal myth. On his return to the states, he immediately aligned forces with like-hearted comrades Ryan Bowditch & Jordan Bowditch. In LA, they formed the Mystic Misfit: a lifestyle brand to empower men & women to activate their inner divinity.
Kevin believes powerful habits create our reality. By investing in healthy rituals, optimal lifestyle, and the human body as the gateways to our true potential for healing. Using yogic postures, breathing patterns, and nutritional science, he helps clients transform and craft their lives. Through language, radical honesty, authentic relating, and non-violent communication, Kevin assists his clients with uncovering what is pioneering to live through them. By exploring their unique story, Kevin helps clients transition across the threshold to the life they desire.

In episode 77, I peel back the layers of Tru Self Explorers founder and personal growth expert, Marc Dimancescu. Marc comes into the personal growth journey through your standard Western life. He had the money, he had the family, he had the house, he had "everything". But it was not enough. As much as Marc grew in his professional career as a corporate consultant and in life materially, the more he realized that there was more to life. Through many years of diving deep into his own conscious and psychology, it all came down to one thing. Connection within a community. It was within Marc's tribe in Ibiza that he realized the importance of ones community on health, wellness and happiness. This edged him into an aha moment in which he founded Tru Self Explorers, a meeting place for conscious and aware being looking for growth and serenity within. This online community will provide journey providers (anyone having the role of a mentor or guide) with the tools to upload their profile and location and offer their services to journey explorers (regular curious beings) . The gap between location dependant and clients can finally be bridged.

This week is one of the most exciting conversations that I have been wanting to share with all of you for so long. Meet my vegan parents, Hendrik and Sharon te Roller. Married for 30 years, in love like they are teenagers and both converted to a vegan diet and turned their life around. They are the living proof that it is never too late to make a impactful change in your life.
Hendrik (69 years old), a butcher for over 45 years, suffered with a whole host of lifestyle diseases from heart disease to diabetes to ulcerative colitus. He was on 9 tablets a day and was weighing 150kg. At the age of 67 he decided to make the change to a vegan diet. WIthin 3 weeks he reversed his diabetes on a high carb plant-based diet and within 6 months was weighing 115kg taking no more meds and exercising 6 days a week.
Sharon (55 years old), suffered with spastic colon and high cholesterol for 20 years, not knowing where to turn as doctors kept giving the false examination that there was no cure. Sharon proved all these medical professionals wrong by adopting a a high carp plant-based diet and reversed her cholesterol, lost 10kg and has never experienced a spastic colon again.
These incredible change-makers in my life are influencing their circle by the mere miracle of how plants have turned their lives around and given them a new lease on life. I honestly believe that a vegan diet has given my parents an extra 20 years of life and way more in energy. They are my role models and they can be your role model to. There is never a time that is too late to make changes.

Today's episode is a special one. It is the start of an in depth conversation about myself. My weaknesses, my strengths and the wisdom I have picked up along the way of living a compassionate and conscious life since sobering up 5 years ago. I thought it would be apt to start with explaining my WHY. The reason behind my purpose driven energy in life. I get vulnerable and share my story of strength and hope. I believe everyone has a story and needs to share it. We are all ENOUGH. We owe it to the world to reveal our genuine truth by living in line with our purpose. Thank you for listening to my story.

The plant powered power couple, Sarah and Peter together run The Seasonal Diet, where they help women and couples lose weight and THRIVE on a plant-based diet.
Everything changed for them in 2010.
Before then, Sarah suffered from the worst persistent stomach pain. Doctors couldn't figure it out. IBS, allergic to gluten, maybe it's just stress they would say and skin issues that had her so self-conscious about leaving the house.
Plant-based diet couple Sarah and Peter struggled with low energy, constipation, and the weight was creeping up. They were unhappy and unconscious.
So 2010 Peter took the lead.
He broke up with Sarah and shook everything on its head. Sarah says "Looking back it's one of the best things that's ever happened to us. Not how I would have done things, but sometimes that's what it takes to have a wake-up call."
While they were apart, they found a plant-based diet. They couldn't believe at 22 and 23, this was the first time they heard about this.
Sarah remembers thinking. "Of course I feel like crap, of course I've been sick my entire life, I've never thought once about the food going into my mouth."
A plant-based diet is what brought them back together. Since then they've been healing their bodies (because health is a long game), educating themselves, and now they get to help others do the same thing.
They've helped couples work together to lower their cholesterol, get off medications, and thrive on a plant-based diet. And, most importantly build a stronger relationship.

Andrew Taylor found his purpose by digging deep though emotional pain and turmoil to become a leader in food addictions. After many years unknowingly suffering from binge eating and being limited by food addictions, Andrew did what no one has ever thought before. He gave up as much taste in his food as possible and adopted a POTATO ONLY diet for an entire year. This made him realize how he was a victim to hiding his emotions behind taste and food satisfaction. Before long, he catapulted onto TV and Newspapers around the world. Being vulnerable, this was super difficult for him but there was a greater purpose to be pursued. To help others heal from the claws of food addictions. To allow people to access the tools away from emotional torture.

Super excited to share this pod with you. The Dervaes family is changing the way we see our grades. They are revolutionizing how we eat and how we look at produce. They have managed to turn a 1/10th acre ordinary home in Pasadena in an urban homestead producing just over 7 tonnes of fresh organic produce annually. Of which they save bucks and a carbon footprint and consume 60% themselves. Listen to this episode about how one man, Jules Dervaes jnr, changed the game and how his three kids, Justin, Anais and Jordanne have kept the flag waving very high.
In 1985 the Dervaes bought a run-down circa 1917 craftsman-style house in the metropolis of Pasadena which is just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. Downsizing from rural 10 acres to suburban 1/10 acre, they thought they’d have to put aside their “country” lifestyle. But, try as the city life may, it couldn’t take their country ways. Instead, they decided to bring their country homesteading lifestyle to their urban plot.
No one thought it was possible. They forged ahead and with no small means of blood, sweat and tears, they worked to transform this ordinary urban plot into an extraordinary example of homesteading in the city. They are now living off the land “directly” — supplying their diet, and “indirectly” — they sell the excess harvest to local establishments and individuals through a customized CSA program via their Front Porch Farmstand.

Don't forget to catch me on the usual channels:
Dan was born and raised in Montana, grew up on a horse ranch and learned early on the importance of taking proper care of livestock, part of that care centered around the feeding and health of the animals.
Early on in 1974, Dan witnessed the inability of modern medicine to provide real lasting solutions to his grandfathers Parkinson’s Disease. This failure prompted Dan’s father Sam to pursue a much less invasive approach to personal health in the family which lead him to becoming a master herbalist and Naturopathic Doctor. Later in 1983, we watched as my other grandfather succumbed to Liver failure in a VA hospital in Oregon. These experiences shaped Dan’s father’s pursuit even further into natural, safe, effective, non-invasive ways to handle chronic illness.
In 1998 the Country Doctor Nutritional Center was established in Torrington, WY. By November, 2001 Dan was asked to join Sam in this endeavor. At the time, Dan was the Assistant Director of Elk Creek Academy, an 86 acre campus tucked away in the mountains of Northwestern Montana. This academy catered to at risk teens and is where Dan began to develop his unique and captivating style for education, communication and truly changing lives with words followed by action.
Today, some 17 years later, Dan’s approach to guiding people along their personal wellness path is unparalleled, educating over 6000 people per year in the family practice in Cheyenne, WY.
People travel from all over the country to have the Country Doctor Experience.
Dan Young’s Philosophy of Wellness
Have you ever met someone that always seems to feel good, look good, have lots of energy and never gets ill? They are for the most part up beat, happy and full of life. Ever find that you ask yourself, “Why?” Why is it that this person is experiencing good health on, what seems to be, an all time basis and you are not?
There are several reasons for this…genetics, diet, exercise. However there is one thing the people described have in common. They believe in and apply certain principles to their daily lives. Its called “Wellness Philosophy” and it has a major impact on how we feel and how well we avoid illness.
We have all heard for decades the importance of cleansing the body, transporting the waste products and giving the body proper nutrition. We could list dozens of procedures to achieve good health under each of these areas. So, if we know all this, why are we not achieving and maintaining good health? I feel the answer lies in the following explanation.
One of my earliest mentors in business and a super successful individual by the name of Jim Rohn gave me this simple formula years ago, shedding light on the difference between success and failure and I wish to pass it on to you.
Success is “a few simple disciplines practiced every day.”
Failure is “a few errors in judgment repeated every day.”
This may sound simple, but take a close look at how knowing this can help you amend your philosophy on wellness. We don’t experience poor health overnight. It takes decades of doing the wrong things day in and day out to place us at ailments door. Because there is no catastrophe at the end of the first day, we unfortunately think that it doesn’t matter and we continue to make the same errors over and over.
“An apple a day”…
Lets put it another way. We have all heard the old saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” If that is true you might say, “Wow, that sounds like it would be easy to do, an apple a day to keep the doctor away, sure I could do that because it would be easy.”
Now here is were we get tripped up. Not only is an apple a day easy to do, it is easy not to do, and because there were no major problems over the short term when I didn’t eat the apple, why should I amend my philosophy on wellness?
Mr. Rohn also told me to look for the half dozen things that make the majority of the difference in our lives. Usually just a half dozen, simple disciplines practiced everyday make 80% or more of the difference in our good health.
Ask yourself these 3 simple questions:
What do I do on a daily basis that helps my body cleanse itself, i.e. diet, exercise, supplementation, rest, etc.?
What do I do on a daily basis that will assist my body to get rid of toxins and waste products?
What do I do on a daily basis that nourishes and helps the body rebuild itself?
By answering these simple questions honestly and using the experience of others as a guide, you can determine what disciplines you need to amend for your good health. Remember…it is not difficult to achieve good health…however, it does take daily disciplines.
Today, I chat to Robby Barbaro, whom you might know from Mastering Diabetes or as the mindful diabetic. Robby has been reversing his type 1 diabetes as a fruitarian for the last 12 years.
At 8:20, Robby starts to share his journey with type 1 diabetes, from his diagnosis in the year 2000. He points out the major life-changing moment when he started to notice that the more fruit and the less fat he ate, the better his insulin was working.
But overcoming type 1 diabetes was not the only reason that Robby went raw vegan. After watching the movie Earthlings, Robby talks about how his eyes were opened to the harsh reality of how the food that he was eating got onto his plate. This was a game changer as well.
Going back to the discussion on his diet, at 23: 17, Robby sheds some light on the importance of getting enough calories with a plant-based and fruit-based lifestyle. He mentions how each meal needs food that’s high in calorie density because if this isn’t the case, this is when you find people flaking on veganism.
At 27:40, Robby addresses a common question that people have about taking up a fruit-based diet; where will my protein come from?
Robby talks about the link between heart disease and diabetes at 32:47 and goes on to debunk some common myths about this link and other myths related to diabetes.
“If I eat as simple as possible, then my digestion is a lot simpler, then that frees up a lot of energy for the body to do its own healing”

This week, we’re at Bambu Indah which is a 5-star hotel that is completely constructed in Bamboo! Imagine that for a second! John and Cynthia Hardy are the founding power couple of this eco-friendly establishment, and we get to meet John Hardy. The couple have been pushing the green movement in Bali since 1975 and are also the founders of the trail blazing Green School in Bali.
From meeting his wife Cynthia, to the establishment of the John Hardy jewelry company, and the Green School, John really takes us on an exciting adventure. Be ready to be challenged in the best way possible.
We get to hear about how the Green School came to be. The school has been running for 10 years and to say it has been doing well is an understatement. This year they have 500 students from 35 countries of which 10 percent are local farmers’ kids on scholarship. It’s very clear that there is something special, and maybe even magical about the school. There is a very real contagious green effect that the school is spreading to its young people and their communities. The school is certainly making for a greener future by training future leaders.
John talks about how corporates and government can make a difference and shares how money is raised for kids that are on scholarships.
We hear of the amazing work being done by some of the local students and how they are already pioneering change in their communities, from making banana leaf paper to cleaning villages of mosquitoes, and even creating a bio bus which is run on used cooking oil. And believe it or not, these are all grade 8 students!

This week, we meet Elizabeth Henzell, the founder of Villa Kitty Foundation in Ubud, which is currently home to 35 dogs and 202 kitties. Whilst in Australia, Elizabeth built a language school for the University of the Sunshine Coast that taught up to 7 languages, that equipped students that were going overseas. It grew to become a community programme as well. In 2007, she relocated from Australia to Bali where she continues to do amazing work in her community and not by building a language school this time, but a refuge for Bali’s disadvantaged cats and dogs.
We chat about the amazing support that she received to establish the Villa Kitty, as well as what it takes to provide care for the cats and dogs at the villa. With many cat and dog rescues, comes a great need for funding and Elizabeth shares how funds can be donated to make a difference.
At 27:43 minutes, she gives a heart-warming tour through Villa Kitty and you don’t have to be there to know that it’s a beautiful facility and the cats and dogs that live here are happy and thriving.
Elizabeth breaks away from the discussion briefly at 32:23 minutes and has a conversation with one of the staff members and she shares the exciting news that 3 adoptions were made. How amazing is it that she’s fluent in Bahasa.
We discuss the sad reality about how cats are not revered in Bali and they, as well as other animals are illtreated, thrown away and even killed due to the shocking lack of understanding of the level playing field of beings.

Carl has been studying the science of happiness and testing out what some of the leading happiness experts have to say for more than a decade. Here, Carl shares a bit about his happiness and authentic success journey with me
We chat about the importance of the 6 pillars to optimum health
Just like yoga is the is about progressing through the physical movement to access the breath (Pranayama) in order to access the consciousness, the same method is needed to access consciousness with the 6 steps above. We chat about how meditation is an important daily task to fully thrive in today's over sensory world.
*"I have travelled the road less travelled, the road well travelled, and a lot of whacky paths in between.
One of the life-changing paths started with a personal development course in 1999, which caused me to delve into the exciting world of personal development, where I develop an insatiable thirst for knowledge and wisdom, along with physical mind-body practices like yoga and meditation.
As an Australian Army Major at the age of 29, I decided at one point that the box I had learned awesome skills in was just not big enough so I resigned, skipped countries, and took up a role as a Consultant to the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games. My leap of faith lead to five amazing years consulting to mega sports events across the world.
But it was in 2007, where I finally found the courage to leave my cushy consulting work to follow my true calling of helping people to tap into their full potential. It was time to set up a Coaching practice, with Bali as my main base.
Fast forward a few years and I have now coached CEO’s, elite athletes, world record holders, actors, UN workers, business owners, entrepreneurs and everything in between. I have also presented seminars to companies like Chevron, Aspire Zone, FINN Group and the SWIRE Group. Plus I run adventure retreats abroad and now authored three books (The Guidebook to Happiness, The Guidebook to Optimum Health, and The Guidebook to Authentic Success).
In the end, I just love seeing people tap into (a lot) more of the potential I know they all have. With 20 years of strategic planning skills, plus skills as a NLP master practitioner, reiki master, personal fitness trainer, hypnotherapist, and Coach, I am fascinated to find the little things we can start doing or stop doing, to unlock our latent potential."*

Previous podcast guest John joins us for another session where he discusses his latest book, The Butterfly Man. This is everyone’s story. This isn’t just a book. It’s a guidebook to a healthier new world. It’s part of an educational initiative that seeks to inspire others to look for more honest answers, to see through the institutions that have made us sick, and find the energy to create our own solutions. John explains this through his own hardship of erectile dysfunction in his late twenties.
John McInroy is a South African born social activist, philanthropist, social entrepreneur, ultra endurance athlete, international field hockey player, actor and vegan yogi. John and I got super deep in this session covering topics of how he regained love for himself and in turn spreading that love with like minded people. John's charisma sone through the entire time and he talks how he made a conscious decision to focus that energy towards the the health of the planet and all sentient beings. This guy creates and innovates but most importantly he has an innate ability to inspire people to find their true self.
John:
"I am finally not scared to really stand out and share the truth behind my story. What was really going on behind the story that most people viewed through a small screen on their phone. I shared what I could through that same screen for so long but in truth it didn’t come close to the full picture.
This is me. Butterfly Man
Funnily enough, it was through the small screen of my phone where the real story also came to life. With the spark coming from a beautiful friend of mine, Steve, who read a draft blog I wrote one night back in August 2017 about the last 12 months of my life and what had happened to me in that year where I just about gave up. He replied to me and said, “Bodhi, let’s meet for lunch”. At lunch he said, “Bru, this is not a blog, this is your first book!”
That was it. The rest is history.
What Steve didn’t expect was that in less than a month I would email him a 77 000-word first manuscript – the rawest most vulnerable writing of my life – all written in the Notes Section of my iPhone. I will never forget his email response:
“WTF!! You wrote a 75000 word book in 15 days straight, typing on your iphone!!! You are a beast bro. When you walked to PMB from Ct in 30 days and then ran Comrades afterwards I knew you were one of a kind but now that is confirmed. Unbelievable Bodhi!”
From giving up, and being able to finally let go of so many things that were weighing me down and making me sick, I allowed so much to enter into my life! For that I am truly grateful, and to be on the verge of sharing my deepest darkest secrets with you in the hope that it can help you in some way seems totally unbelievable.
It’s been such a crazy, vulnerable roller-coaster ride to get to where I am today with so many heartfelt contributions. What the Butterfly Man has become, truly is a miracle and I believe in the message it carries and the questions I hope it ignites us to ask. I wouldn’t share what I am sharing if it didn’t truly believe in this.
As you may know the launch of my book is part of something much bigger – The Feel for Real Program in partnership with Oom Ray (editor/ co-writer of my book) and Cristina (mother hen of Olive Retreat) including the Launch of a Program designed for Writers with an important message to share in the world. I can’t wait for more people to experience the magic of our home base in Khao Tao, Thailand. Just waking up there and being there, magic flows!
There is so much to say, but one thing I cannot leave out is to share with you the birth of Hard on Karma Creations (www.hardonkarma.com, will be ready by 22/2) – who is the publisher of Butterfly Man. We hope to facilitate the rise of Writing Revolutionaries to help us co-create a new gentler world to live in. I have met many Writers who have important messages to share but have no idea of the process involved and often this leaves their work unknown. We would like to support you not only in the writing and publishing process but also in making your life as sustainable and healthy as possible. We cannot change the world unless we truly look after ourselves. And how we look after ourselves determines how we treat others. How we treat others determines how others treat themselves. It all begins with ourselves.
Here is a video that gives you an overview of the Butterfly Man Campaign. I am fully open to the magic and vulnerability of this process. Thanks to all of you, I have had the faith to jump off the cliff and keep free-falling as I know the net will appear!
Ideas, collaborations or book launches anywhere around the world would be welcome. So far, we are focusing on South Africa but are looking forward to opportunities in the USA, UK or Australia – actually to anywhere the Universe directs us.
I will be in Dublin at the end of June so I welcome any opportunities while I am there. I am also teaching/ facilitating at two amazing festivals in Ängsbacka, Sweden at the end of July, until the beginning of August. And I will be teaching/ facilitating at a beautiful festival called Retreat Yourself outside Cape Town from 8-11 March. Thank you to so many special people for believing in me.
Now that you know what’s going down, please get in touch with me if any of the above jumps at you and says “I want IN!” I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to email me or comment below and we can go into more detail!
If you have ordered books via my Crowdfunding Campaign, I will start signing and sending your copies of Butterfly Man from Friday, 23 February. I promise to be as present as I can so you can really feel my love and gratitude for your support in this. After you have read the book, I would love to hear from you personally. Please feel free to share your feelings, reviews on social media – whatever comes up, no matter what that is! It’s so important to me that you honour your true feelings!
So much love and gratitude to you!
John / Bodhi / Sipho or whoever you know me as!

Peter is a raw food chef, authors and health dducators who has been guiding South Africa on a journey to radiant health, abundant energy, lightness and fun.
Him and his wife, Berryn (Co-Founder of Soaring Free) returned home to South Africa in 2006. A close friend asked them to run a workshop for herself and her housemate teaching them how to prepare healthy food. They invited a small group of people together and presented their first course. This led to the beginning of courses and events around South Africa teaching people about raw & living foods and how to make delicious raw food dishes.
The Superfoods Brand:
They found that many of the Superfoods that they were accustomed to eating abroad were not available in South Africa, especially the raw cacao (chocolate). So, they began to import their favourite superfoods mainly to keep themselves and their friends in good supply. Very soon they were supplying the people on their workshops, then local health shops, markets and specialised delis. They created their company Soaring Free and the Superfoods brand dedicated to sourcing and distributing only the highest quality organic Superfoods we could find. They now have a wide and continuously growing range of Superfoods.
The Rawlicious Recipe Book:
During the first 2 years of running raw food courses the question Peter and Berryn were asked most often was, ‘when are you going to write a book?’ Inspired by the growing number of people embracing the amazing transformative and healing potential of raw and living foods they wrote and created Rawlicious, recipes for radiant health in 2009 – South Africa’s first gourmet raw food recipe book. The recipe book continues to inspire more people to a new way of being and eating and has now been published internationally.
The Rawlicious DVD:
By the end of 2010 a new idea had started to develop. When their friends came over for a meal, most of the time they only started preparing the food when they arrived and, chatting in the kitchen they would assemble a gorgeous array of dishes in less than an hour. This way they had a chance to catch up while they also had the opportunity of getting involved with the food and seeing just how easy and fun making healthy and nutritious food can be. Peter and Berryn asked themselves: How could we share and bring more people into our kitchen in a similar way? The answer in itself was simple too. Let’s bring our kitchen into your kitchen! And so Rawlicious, Elements for Radiant Health, the DVD series was born.
Rawlicious Events:
Peter continues to share his experiences and expertise in the field of raw food nutrition via free talks, seminars, courses, workshops and retreats. For more info check out the Courses & Workshops page.
Shop & Webshop:
The Rawlicious Shop & Webshop only stocks products that they would use personally. Achieving radiant health is not about a static formula, it is ever-changing and they are always looking for products that enhance and improve health. Many of the products that they use in their recipe book that may seem unfamiliar are stocked here too. We have done our best to make this webshop as user-friendly as possible.

All the dogs originate from existing shelters and WOOF Project provides the exposure needed in order to find a forever home
Saving fury friends was not enough for this vegan warrior. In 2016 Joanne founded Farm Sanctuary SA and it was officially opened on World Farm Animal Day 2 October 2016. Located in the renowned Franschhoek Valley of the Western Cape, the sanctuary serves to instill an awakened connection between farm animals and visitors and aims to inspire a positive change in the way society views and treats farm animals. This is the home to the infamous painting pig, Pigcasso.

Traditional Chinese medicine
Literal meaning "Chinese medicine"
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM; simplified Chinese: 中医; traditional Chinese: 中醫; pinyin: Zhōngyī) is a style of traditional medicine built on a foundation of more than 2,500 years of Chinese medical practice that includes various forms of herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage (tui na), exercise (qigong), and dietary therapy,1 but recently also influenced by modern Western medicine. TCM is widely used in Greater China[1][2][3][4] (where it has long been the standard system of medicine), and is becoming increasingly popular and recognized worldwide (where it is primarily approached as alternative medicine)
Dr Ron du Preez based in Arizona, USA is a senior pastor and an internationally renowned bible scholar of the 7th Day Adventist Church. Fit and faith are great ways to describe him. At the age of 64 on a completely vegan diet, Dr Ron ran the Grand Canyon Rim-Rim-Rim just after running a 7 marathons in 7 days in 7 countries. Not only is Dr Ron making an influence in the church community and the running trails but he has just completed his third doctorate.
If there is anything you can pick up from the conversation it is that religion and everything else in life is caught and not taught. Meaning the influence you have on your children stems mostly from the way you are living your life. Dr Ron and his wife have dedicated their life to the children of the world by spreading the love daily through compound work day in and day out.

Tash is the epitome of living a balanced and purpose driven life. After traveling the world learning cultures, techniques and yoga she found herself and her purpose right next door to the very restaurant she grew up in. On the same block as her family's Italian restaurant, Tash etched the name "Nourish'd" in the dust of a garage door which has now become the thriving plant-based cafe that Cape Townian's flock to. Not only does it have deliciously nourishing meals but it is a meeting place of like minded sustainable souls.

That is why it is so extremely important to understand this simple belief that the natural order of things is a group of repetitive rhythmic processes that affect our health, physical strength and spiritual balance.
The instruments functioning in Nature affects the human being, which is a part of the world… that’s why Tash and Nourish'd try their hardest to supply customers with as much organic, locally sourced, environmentally friendly produce as possible.
Born in South Africa, John McInroy spent most of his childhood in England before returning to com- plete his schooling in Cape Town.
He has a BComm from the University of Cape Town and an MBA from University College Dublin in Ireland. He attended the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, as an MBA exchange student. An enthusiastic team player, John also represented South Africa in hockey.
While living in Dublin, the red socks (known as the shoOops!) came to life in 2007 when a very close friend staying with him decided to return to work in South Africa. Inspired by a story of three South African prisoners of war who had been captured at the Siege of Tobruk in 1942 and vowed to each other that should any of them make it back alive, they would wear red socks to remember each other and always be “together”. John and his friend made a promise that they would wear red socks every Friday.
Red Sock Fridays have since grown into a global movement, with the socks being worn in more than 70 countries in the world – spanning all 7 continents. More importantly is what they represent and how they bring together and impact the lives of many people.
John was awarded the “Ideas for the Future” scholarship by the University College of Dublin’s Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, in recognition of his dream to connect people all over the world one pair of red socks at a time.
In 2010, the story of Phil Masterton-Smith whose nickname was “Unogwaja”, the zulu word for a hare, made its way to John. In 1931, Masterton-Smith became the youngest ever Comrades winner, aged 19, which is a record that still stands to this day. However, in 1933, Masterton-Smith was living in Cape Town and couldn’t a ord the train fare to get to the start of the Comrades Marathon. He refused to give up and cycled across the country to take part in the race. Masterton-Smith lost his life on 5th June 1942 in the Battle of Tobruk.
In 2011, the first ever Unogwaja Challenge took place. It began as a 1650 km bike ride in 10 days across South Africa from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg followed by the Comrades Marathon on day 11.
Today, The Unogwaja Charitable Trust has been established and founded by John. The cycle journey and the red socks continue to unite people from all over South Africa and around the world but it is John’s mission to support primary education as a means to empower South African people, and address the significant inequalities the majority of South Africa still contend with that is at the core of Unogwaja, the red socks and John McInroy.
In 2015, John completed the Unogwaja journey on foot to allow more people to become a part of the movement and call it their own.
John inspires people to join together and be the best they can be. And while he may be a uniquely gifted orator, John prefers to be judged on his actions.
With a somewhat spiritual journey and pulling himself out of the all consuming world of his charities, John explored and studied his 300 hour yoga teacher training in India and a tantra course in Thailand. These passages in life opened up a new world of love and compassion that motivated him to write his first autobiography aptly named Butterfly Man that launches on 22 February 2018.

Kheyrne Danu is the brainchild of SuperThrive and founder of Woman Thrive. She is also a health journalist, nature worshipper and muse.
From a young age Kheyrne had to work through a few big health challenges including adrenal fatigue, digestive issues and reproductive problems. She chose to focus on nature’s medicine chest for her recovery. After much research around hormone healing she finally discovered (back in 2006) the profound effects of adaptogen herbs and superfoods.
“I had 14 powders lining my shelves and one day I decided to create a mix for easy use. I was surprised how palatable the taste was. Having one powder made life so much easier. After taking it for 30 days I discovered my energy levels greatly improved, my sleep was deep and restful, my mind was more acute and my emotional state was calm and grounded.” - Kheyrne
Today Kheyrne facilitates Hormone Vitality and Womb Way Yoni Egg workshops.
SuperThrive Notes
Blood Sugar Stability
• The endocrine systems prime directive is to safe guard the transport of glucose between the brain, the heart and the muscle tissue.
• Once the blood sugar is out of balance the endocrine system goes into emergency mode using valuable hormone resources. When this happens continuously the adrenals, reproductive hormones, thyroid and mental state can become compromised.
• Fats, proteins and minerals are essential for stabilizing blood sugar. We all need carbohydrates in the form of vegetables (some body types do well with a few grains), but too many carbs throw the blood sugar out of balance.
• Eat something protein based with some fat within 1.5 hours of waking and eat snacks or meals every 3-5 hours. Eating 3 hours before bedtime prevents insulin spike at night allowing good melatonin production.
Oestrogen Dominance
In women oestrogen and progesterone need to stay in balance (200-300 progesterones to one oestrogen). In men testosterone and oestrogen need to stay in balance.
TOO MUCH OESTROGEN
• Increases blood clotting (strokes, thrombosis)
• Suppresses progesterone and thyroid
• Increases sensitivity to stress hormones
• Increases fluid retention
• Impairs blood sugar balance
• Reduces oxygen level in cells
• Increases bone loss
• Increases anxiety, insomnia and headaches
• Increases inflammation
• Increases body weight
Chemical Chaos
• Since the industrial revolution over 80,000 chemicals have been produced and used within our environment. Most of these are known as Endocrine Disruptors (ED’s) or Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDC’s). Pesticides and fertilizers are a major culprit, but we can find ED’s in many places.
• “ED’s are defined by WHO (World Health Organization) as exogenous compounds or mixtures that alter function(s) of the endocrine system and consequently cause adverse effects in an intact organism. ED’s can also be transferred from the pregnant woman to the developing fetus or child through the placenta and breast milk.”
Water
Not only does water contain the xenoestrogen dioxin from chlorine but the recycled component from sewage water also contains the contraceptive pill and HRT and in some areas other environmental ED’s, none of which can be killed or deactivated.
• Endocrine disruptors found in SA water (News24)
Professor Edmund Pool told News24, “All the sewage treatment plants I’ve tested in the Western Cape were found to remove 80% of hormones, the untreated 20% has been shown to be able to change the morphology and sex ratios of some animals like fishes, frogs, and crabs. EDCs eventually get lodged in humans’ body tissues, more concerning is that it can sit in the reproductive organs where it is carried over to offspring.”
• “Boys who swam the most in chlorinated pools had 20% lower testosterone than boys who swam in the pool disinfected with copper–silver ionization.” – January 2012 Environmental Health Perspectives
Body Products and Cleaning Products
You absorb more chemicals through your skin than you do by ingestion!
For most of us our cupboards are filled with ED’s. If your beauty or cleaning products contain any petrochemicals you are essentially smearing toxic oil from your car on to your skin. Unless an ingredient has a plant name, it is most likely derived from petrochemicals.
• Aqueous Cream
• Petroleum Jelly
• Liquid Paraffin
• Mineral Oil
Some experts say there is approximately a 50% increase in risk of cancer when using these products.
If a body product says ‘natural’ or even ‘organic’ (unless certified) this does not mean it doesn’t contain toxic chemicals. Read the ingredients. There is no limitation on words chosen for the name of a product and this can be very misleading.
If your cleaning products say ‘eco’ or ‘green’, this does not mean they are not harmful for your body.
The Chemical Impact
• Infertility – WHO stats for 2010: 48.5 million couples, ¼ globe
• Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) – 20% women worldwide
• Endometriosis – 10% women worldwide
• Fibroids – 30% women worldwide
• Erectile dysfunction – 1:10 men worldwide, up to ¼ of men under 40
• Premature ejaculation – Up to 30% of men globally
• Obesity – 30% global population
• Depression – WHO: 350 million globally
• Sleep disorders – 55% global population, 40% sleep apnea
• PMS
• Menopause issues
• All of these are markers for cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc.
• Prostate cancer – Globally 80% men by age 80
• Breast cancer – 19% Asia & Africa, 83% West Europe, 80% USA. A 20% rise from 2008 to 2012
Food Oestrogens
Even organic animal fats do naturally promote oestrogen in the body to some degree. Therefore if you eat animal products make sure they don’t take up more than 20% of your diet and sourcing is key! Most organic raw plant oils (except soya oil) promote progesterone production. Testosterone can do well on a balance of both animal and plant fats.
• Dairy – Oestrogen is given to all cows that are not grass fed – look for organic
• Meat – Oestrogen is in all animals that are not grass fed (the grains used are also GMO)
• Eggs – Oestrogen is in all eggs including free range that are not pasture reared (or Angus the Farmers ‘truly free range’)
Soya
• Non-organic dairy and meat are filled with oestrogen administered to fatten up the animal and increase milk production.
• Non-organic, non-fermented soya does not have absorbable protein, contains 3 toxic chemicals and has extremely high oestrogen levels.
• Back in 1998 investigators that wrote the article 'Phytoestrogens in soy-based infant foods' reported that an infants daily consumption of isoflavones from soya formula is six to eleven times higher than an adults would take in through food. Reserchers conclude, “Babies on soy formula receive the estrogenic equivalent of at least 5 birth control pills per day.”
Progesterone
Progesterones is a precursor hormone (makes other steroid hormones) as well as an end hormone. It is vital for proper reproductive, thyroid and adrenal function.
If one has had a high stress life or previous hormone issues it is common for progesterone to start dropping from around 35 years old leading to symptoms such as – inhibited ovulation, lowered mood, increased weight gain, sleep issues, worse PMS, reproductive issues, adrenal fatigue, low thyroid and more.
• Precorsor for oestrogen, testosterone and cortisol
• Promotes bone formation
• Balances blood sugar
• Upholds sex drive
• Upholds cellular oxygen absorption
• Maintains and nourishes uterus
• Prevents fibrocystic breasts
• Natural antidepressive
• Uses fat for energy
• Helps prevent cancer by inhibiting the gene p53
• Facilitates thyroid hormone action
• Balances calming neurotransmitter GABA
• Neuroprotective – promotes myelinization
• Anti-inflammatory
Testosterone (Notes from Dr Bridget Briggs Functional Medicine Lecture)
• Testosterone levels are typically highest by a man’s late twenties. After that they slowly declines 1% to 2% per year.
• Some level of serum decline in testosterone is natural up to 10.4. Below this men are prone to metabolic syndrome, depression and cardiovascular disease.
• Oestrogen and synthetic chemicals inhibit testosterone.
• 34% to 50% of all men experience some level of low testosterone.
• 30% to 40% of men between the ages of 40 and 55 are actually experiencing true symptoms of andropause.
• It only takes 5 days of impaired sleep to see a 15% drop in testosterone.
• Testosterone supplementation below the age of 40 can create infertility.
• Testosterone can aromatize (convert) into oestrogen under certain circumstances.
**HORMONE SUPPORT:
Adaptogens**
Adaptogens should not be combi ned with pharmaceutical medication, especially when it comes to issues like thyroid. Reason being adaptogens work at enhancing the bodies abilities where most medications (such as altroxin) work on the principle of halting the body's own function and replacing it with a synthetic version.
There are ways of slowly weaning off certain medications and replacing them with natural substances such as adaptogen herbs, but this needs medical supervison from an expert such as a Functional or Integrative Medicine doctor.
The Russian scientist, G.M. Barenboirn said it well:
"For the first time in the history of human civilization the biological potentialities of the human body have failed to meet the requirements imposed on it by the epoch. One witnesses an unusual 'epidemic' of fatigue aggravated by the powerful action of man-made, external chemical and physical environmental factors. Like the drugs that saved the world from numerous bacterial and viral epidemics that cost millions of lives in the past, the adaptogens are needed to help man withstand the diverse stresses of today."
What is an adaptogen?
These plants were appropriately named as they adapt to their environment and they help the body adapt to its environment. Explaining the effects of the adaptogens is difficult, since they support each individual differently. Adaptogens literally adapt their function to where it’s needed in the body, making themselves the right shape to fit into the keyhole.
Adaptogens are also a powerful antioxidant. They have no side effects and are not addictive. They possess a wide range of therapeutic benefits, which cause no disturbance to the normal functioning of the body. If you are mentally exhausted or physically fatigued the adaptogens will help you feel more energetic and awake. At the same time adaptogens are not stimulants. If you are stressed to the max and highly strung, or just not coping with life, then adaptogens will help bring you to a calm and centered state, yet they are not tranquillizers and do not have a drug-like effect on the body.
Adaptogens are most known for supporting stress and fatigue, low libido and reproductive health, calming the nervous system, enhancing mental and physical performance and post sports recovery. Since 1947 medical and scientific research has been conducted and published on adaptogens in various parts of the world.
Adaptogens – Ashwaghanda, Medicinal mushrooms, Tulsi, Rhodiola, Schizandra, Astragulus, Maca, Foti, Chaga, Panax Ginseng, Gota Kola, Moringa – SuperThrive.

PEOPLE:
At his core, Dr. Joel Kahn believes that plant-based nutrition is the most powerful source of preventative medicine on the planet. Having practiced traditional cardiology since 1983, it was only after his own commitment to a plant based vegan diet that he truly began to delve into the realm of non-traditional diagnostic tools, prevention tactics and nutrition-based recovery protocols. These ideologies led him to change his approach and focus on being a holistic cardiologist.
He passionately lectures throughout the country about the health benefits of a plant-based anti-aging diet inspiring a new generation of thought leaders to think scientifically and critically about the body’s ability to heal itself through proper nutrition.
One of the world’s top cardiologists, Dr. Joel Kahn has treated thousands of acute heart attacks during his career. He’d like all that to stop. He’d like to prevent ALL future heart attacks by breaking through to the public to educate and inspire a new holistic lifestyle. Now is the time to focus on educating the public to eat clean, sweat clean and apply cutting edge science to their lifestyle.
During our intimate conversation we cover everything about health as his new book, The Plant-Based Solution, covers. Every chapter is about a different area of your life which can be revitalized through the correct nutrition. Buy the book!!!

Tony Budden is at the forefront of hemp and the legalization of this versatile plant in South Africa. He founded Hemporium in 1996 with Tony and his business partner, Duncan Parker, being committed to showcasing all that hemp has to offer by providing quality products made from this eco-friendly and versatile plant. Tony and Hemporium are actively lobbying for legislation change in order to allow farmers to grow this beneficial resource so that we can source all our products, from seed to shirt, locally.
“Hemp” refers to the industrial uses of the Cannabis Sativa plant. Hemp varieties are typically non-psychoactive and are prized for the eco-friendly fibre, biomass and nutritious seeds.
At Hemporium, Tony is dedicated to providing eco-friendly solutions to the global need for sustainable materials. Through his online hemp shop, they offer high quality, innovative products to raise awareness of the incredible versatility of industrial hemp.
In our conversation we chat about how hemp is better than zero carbon and having a 4 month turn around from growing your hemp to building your house with your crops. The versatility if this plant opened my eyes and expanded my consciousness.

Riaan Manser is a pioneering explorer, based in South Africa. He was the first person to circumnavigate the coast of Africa by bicycle, a distance of 37,000 km, through 34 countries over two years and two months. In July 2009 he became the first person to kayak 5,000 km around Madagascar, alone and unaided. Both journeys are covered in his books, Around Africa on My Bicycle and Around Madagascar on my Kayak. In 2011 he also circumnavigated Iceland in a two-man kayak with Dan Skinstad. Riaan then conquered the oceans with his wife, Vasti. They completed a journey, "Take Me 2 New York" that started in December 2013. They rowed from Morocco, Africa to New York City, USA in an ocean rowing boat alone and unaided. Their latest journey is the famous honeymoon trip where they rowed from California to Hawaii again alone and unaided a small ocean rowing boat.
No Food For Lazy Man:
No Food for Lazy Man™ is a charity organisation set up by Solo Adventurer, Riaan Manser, to provide disadvantaged children with a sporting chance at a brighter future.
The No Food for Lazy Man™ trust identifies schools throughout the Province that are in dire need of assistance and supplies them with basic sporting equipment to ensure all our children receive the recreational stimulation necessary to build confidence, character and instill teamwork. For many of these children, the ability to take part in sport is all it will take for them to live out their dreams and aspirations.
Manser likes to do things a little differently... he expects the children to give back to society in some way or another… For example, some children recently chose to do a "beach clean" as part of their payback.
This is Manser's way of educating the youth that there is "no food for lazy man", and he hopes that in years to come these children might one day become the sporting heroes that other kids will aspire to follow, and he hopes too that they will also learn that things don't come free, and that we should give back where we can.

Dr. Loomis has served as team internist for the St. Louis Rams football team and the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team earning himself 4 championship rings. Dr Loomis was also the tour physician for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Before coming to the Barnard Medical Center, he practiced internal medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis, where he was also the director of prevention and wellness. He was also on the clinical faculty of the department of internal medicine at Washington University School of Medicine.
Besides for being a highly accoladed doctor, Dr Loomis spends a lot of his time training for a half Ironman's and marathons - what an unbelievable plant powered athlete. Dr Loomis is also a whiz in the kitchen and word has it that he has the best hot sauce recipe out there.
We discuss the whole 'bro science' around sports nutrition and how it infiltrates it way into gyms and schools. Theres a misconception that we need more protein when we actually only need more calories and this is the mindset that needs to change.
From a doctor with high cholestrol, atrial fibreliation and pre diabetes to a plant powered athlete/doctor. Dr Loomis managed to change his method of thinking by watching Forks Over Knives. From that day on he began a plant-based lifestyle and this has helped not only change is health around but give him the tools to change his patients health. In his words, he went from practicing sickcare to healthcare
The root cause of 95% of problems that walk into his door is from the food we put into our mouths, how much exercise we get, and how we cope with stress and this is the reason he spends more than the 15/20min most physicians get allocated.

Former world champion go-karter, Formula 3 racing driver, founder of Scheckter's Energy Drink and now restauranteur behind the very popular Scheckter’s Raw in Seapoint
"Health food has always been a big part of my diet but when I was living in New York launching Scheckter’s OrganicEnergyTM I was blown away by the ingenuity and creativity that was flourishing in the health food scene and a greater passion was sparked in me.
When I returned to South Africa, I became frustrated with the local health food offerings. Compared to New York, they were unimaginative and limited. I wanted a place to eat where the food was nutritionally uncompromised, looked as good as it tasted and bursting with original, fresh flavours. Most importantly, I wanted to share that experience with other like-minded, health conscious foodies.
I drew inspiration from working on my family’s organic farm in the UK, my travels around the world and my healthy obsession for health food!
And so – Scheckter’s RAW Gourmet Health Food was born. A serene space serving uncompromisingly honest, beautiful and innovative healing food made with love."
