Often the smart ambitious women that I talk to every week are not being assertive enough on LinkedIn.

This week my theme is about being more assertive in the workplace without getting labelled as aggressive. At the same time I don’t want you to be underestimated.

When I work with my clients, whether one-to-one or in a group, I notice that women who present as confident and assertive in the workplace .... well their LinkedIn profile tells a different story. If you want to make a bigger impact and attract the right career opportunities you need to be more assertive on LinkedIn too.

Discover 3 smart ways that you can be more assertive on LinkedIn:

  • Maximise your LinkedIn profile summary to 'big yourself up'
  • Focus on the more senior roles not the junior ones from the past
  • Add more skills to your profile

So many of the women that I often talk to or work with struggle to tame their inner critic. Those "You're not good enough" thoughts in your head. The fear of being 'found out'.

Often these thoughts stop us from doing our best work and making a bigger impact at work so that we can take our career to the next level.

Jess Baker is an independent Business Psychologist and Women's Leadership Coach. She’s worked for some impressive organisations in her career including Barclays, HSBC and Aon Consulting.

I was intrigued by her 5 Day Tame Your Inner Critic Challenge that starts on 15 January. I invited Jess to give us the inside scoop on how to manage our inner critic so that we feel more confident.

Jess shares three key facts to help us understand the inner critic (sometimes described as the imposter syndrome):

  • Our brain is wired to protect us and prevent us messing up
  • We can't 'stop' those inner critic thoughts
  • But often those inner critic thoughts are based on lies or false evidence

She then goes onto share some simple yet REALLY powerful techniques to tame and disempower your inner critic.

I was gutted then delighted to make the Final 3 in the Life Coach of the Year Awards. (And I'll share a special offer to celebrate my 'win').

Anna Meller is the Work ReBalance Mentor and works with ambitious professional women who want to balance their corporate career with their family life. Through her Balanced Leader group programmes and bespoke coaching/mentoring, Anna empowers women to make choices that work for them and their employers.

Over the summer the EHRC was the latest body to add its voice to mounting calls for greater access to flexible working as a way of reducing pay gaps and helping women progress.

Legislation already exists allowing any qualifying employee to ask for flexible working and most organisations have relevant policies. However, negotiating a flexible schedule can still be challenging – particularly as you progress up the career ladder.

To celebrate #NationalWorkLifeWeek, from 2-6 October 2017, and in the US #WorkAndFamilyMonth throughout October, Anna and I explore seven steps to confidently negotiate a flexible working arrangement that both suits you and your employer.

  1. Be very clear on what you want.
  2. Be clear on your value to your employer.
  3. The reasons your request might be refused.
  4. Review what your existing HR policies allow.
  5. Identify what's under the radar.
  6. Prepare your case.
  7. Be willing to agree to a trial period.

Discover how Helen Bennett inspires our future generation of leaders by bringing together deserving teenagers and business leaders in Bennett's Business Bash.

Helen is the founder of Human Reality, a training & human resources consultancy. When Helen got involved with a local school to conduct mock interviews, she realised that for some, their lack of confidence could be attributed to a lack of social skills and aspiration.

Determined to change this, Helen organised the first Bennett's Business Bash for a small group of disadvantaged teenagers to sit down for dinner with senior business and organisational leaders in a first class venue.

In this show Helen shares the challenges, the lessons, and insights gained.

  • How one teenager banged on the door to be let in.
  • When she realised she needed to do a crash course in handshaking.
  • What nearly caused a riot.
  • Why one teenager said "it's the first time I've been made to feel really special"

  • base your confidence on facts

  • identify the things that people come to you for

In the UK, nearly half of those joining accountancy are women. However at accountancy firms, women make up 23% of all partners, according to Catalyst, although 49% of all accounting employees. As you might expect, there is a “falling off” among women aged between 30 and 40 (although that is only partly explained by motherhood according to Rhonda Martin, head of ICAEW’s Women in Leadership team).

Award-winning Archna Tharani took a different route back into accountancy after a career break and now runs her own practice.

Archna has partnered with Lucy Whittington to bring the Your Own Practice programme to market and it's launching in September 2017. They are running discovery sessions to find out more on 4 and 8 July in London, and you can find all the details on the link below. Please do get in touch with Archna if you are interested.

In episode 026, Archna shares:

  • the challenges she faced when returned to work
  • what gave her the confidence
  • how she combats the loneliness of running your own business
  • the benefits of technology to provide a flexible career for women in accountancy
  • how accountancy is changing from 'just' number-crunching

Archna's top tips to other women going back into the workforce after a career break:

  • build the right support around you
  • identify the skills you need to develop to continue your career, both technical and leadership
  • reach out to people and network

Following the interview with Terrence Donovan in Episode 019, this week Kristal McNamara of Flexology discusses how and why employers make flexible working work effectively.

We discuss the different types of flexible working, the benefits to employer (and employee), whether all roles are suitable for flexible working, how senior management lead by example, and the importance of getting your flexible working strategy in place first.

Kristal is qualified and experienced in Change and Programme Management, with many years experience in Financial Services as a senior leader. An accomplished people manager experienced with hiring, establishing and managing large teams, she is ideally placed to understand the needs of hiring managers.

Flexology is dedicated to improving flexible work opportunities in the South West providing recruitment, training and consultancy services. The benefits of flexible working are compelling and there are now evidenced links to improved business and financial performance. Despite this, the availability of flexible roles is limited and a large and growing talent pool is being overlooked. Flexology aims to bring a fresh approach that will challenge the way companies think about recruitment and their people strategy and help them shape roles that work.

How to get promoted when you are on maternity leave Many women spend their maternity leave worrying about the impact on their career when they go back to work. In this episode, I talk to Lynn Christison who was promoted while on maternity leave.

Lynn worked as a geophysicist in the oil and gas exploration industry for 15 years. When she went on maternity leave, she was a team leader. While she was on maternity leave, she was asked to come back to a promotion, as the manager of 2 data processing teams. Not only that, Lynn successfully negotiated reduced hours.

Sadly the company that Lynn worked for didn't survive when the oil industry went into decline and Lynn is no longer in that industry. She now manages a Customer care team in a utility metering company.

Confident Conversations is a weekly podcast show for ambitious women about confidently balancing work and life, hosted by me, Sherry Bevan, Author, Coach & Speaker. A former Global Head of IT Service for a City law firm, I now work as a women's leadership coach helping ambitious women get clear on what they really want then find the confidence to do it.

Managing a large team on part-time hours – Episode 010 In this week’s episode about the imposter syndrome, I’m talking to Julia Bramble of Bramble Buzz.

While Julia, mum of 6, is now an award-winning specialist and small business social media expert, her career started in the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Lab in London. She wrote the training material and trained more than 20 hugely resistant, highly respected, court reporting officers who didn’t believe in this new-fangled DNA testing being introduced.

In Julia's next role, she was responsible for setting up a new unit to create the first national DNA database. In her new role she was responsible for recruiting, training and leading a team of 60 scientists and yet she only worked 3 days a week. Julia demonstrates that YES leadership on part-time hours can be done.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • How a forensic scientist ends up as a social media expert
  • How to effectively lead a team of 60 people when you work part-time
  • How to engage and motivate the individuals in a large team
  • The change management required to successfully introduce a new way of working

Julia's top tips for women in leadership: don't try and do everything. Delegate effectively which means giving responsibility, backing and support.

How to have a difficult conversation in the workplace - Episode 008 This week's episode is about how to have those difficult conversations in the workplace, and especially when it's about poor attitude at work.

I’m talking to Sue Ingram from Converse Well. Sue initially trained in HR and worked in the City, and then in a number of pressurised sales environments. She discovered that the key to business success is the right people in the right jobs.

Sue is now an Author, Speaker and Facilitator on Difficult Conversations in the Workplace. She helps managers handle difficult conversations and provide feedback to their staff.

Today we are talking specifically about how to handle those difficult conversations with somebody in your team about poor attitude.

Sue shares with us:

  • How to start that conversation about poor attitude

How to speak up confidently in meetings - Episode 007 This week's episode is about speaking up with confidence in meetings.

I’m talking to Susan Heaton-Wright from Executive Voice. Susan helps people get heard in meetings, presentations or public speaking. I originally interviewed Susan for my first online conference in 2015. There's a whole chapter in my book based on that interview about how to project confidence through your voice and presence.

Today we are talking specifically about how to speak up confidently in meetings without being pushy. This is for you if you worry about speaking up in meetings because you don't want to be laughed at or be ignored. Or your voice doesn't get heard.

Many of the women that I work with tell me that they presented a great idea, for it to fall on deaf ears. Ten minutes later, somebody else presents that very same idea and everybody loves it. Susan shares her secrets on how to avoid that happening ever again.

We also talk about:

  • The common worries that we have about speaking up at meetings
  • How to project confidence through our voice even when we don’t feel it inside
  • How to sit at the table
  • The importance of the non-verbal communication
  • How to 'take up space' in meetings so that your presence is noticed
  • One story I hear all the time “I made this great suggestion and it fell on deaf ears. Two weeks later, the same idea was presented by a man, and suddenly everybody loved it”. Can we fix that?
  • Susan's respect and admiration for Betty Boothroyd, first female Speaker in the House of Commons
  • How to prepare for a meeting

Going back to work with confidence after a career break This week’s episode is about going back to work after a career break and how you can do this with confidence. I invited former client Ashley Aspin to share her personal experiences.

Ashley graduated from Cardiff University with a degree in Music in 1997 and started her working life in London with a leading classical music management agency. Two years later she took a post with the BBC Classical Music Department assisting the managing editor and working on some unique television programmes and events such as the Queen’s Jubilee Concerts at Buckingham Palace.

Seeking a career change two years later, Ashley joined the fast-track management training scheme for Davy's Wine Bars in the City of London gaining great experience in the trade and learning about wine. She transferred these skills to recruitment in the hospitality sector and became Davy’s recruitment consultant at agency Berkeley Scott before taking a career break to bring up her young children. In 2012 she moved from London to the town of Marple, a small town in Greater Manchester on the edge of the Peak District.

Whilst on her career break, Ashley took up several charitable causes. She volunteered for the National Childbirth Trust, as editor of the local branch newsletter; raised over £2000 for St John Ambulance by running the London Marathon and supported the local primary school by organising major fundraising events.

She is now the HR Officer for the Laurus Trust, a newly established multi-academy trust in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport. She continues to contribute to the local community by assisting as a coach support worker for the girls teams at Marple Cricket Club which has over 90 junior members attending weekly, and of whom over a third are girls.

In the show we discuss:

  • How to maintain the intellectual challenge during your career break
  • How volunteering helps you to acquire new skills and maintain existing ones
  • The value of your skills gained through volunteering
  • Ashley's big worries before going back to work and how she worked through them all
  • How to find work you love that fits around family

Ashley's top tips for ambitious women who want to go back to work after a career break AND balance work and life “Stop looking for the perfect role and think about your skillset. The perfect balance is elusive but check in with yourself on a regular basis. Be honest with yourself and decide whether or not you need to take action. Be flexible in your approach and be adaptable to what you best can match.”

GUEST: Ashley Aspin
HOSTED BY: Sherry Bevan

How to get the work-life balance that is right for you This week's episode is about work life balance and how you can achieve it. I invited Clara Wilcox at The Balance Collective to join me to discuss this topic.

Clara has built on over 15 years of recruitment, leadership, and coaching experience, and the most important qualification of all in her eyes, being a parent, to create The Balance Collective.

Her fascination with what “makes a person tick” and personal development started with her degree in Psychology, many moons ago, and has continued through her work as a Branch Manager of a bespoke recruitment consultancy, to her Management role in a not-for-profit employability skills organisation.

An eternal student, she is also a qualified Project Manager, DISC practitioner and is currently completing her coaching accreditation. Her clients comment that her approach “makes sense”; she likes to call it “coachject management” (coaching and project management combined!)

The Balance Collective is a social enterprise working towards reducing maternal unemployment through training and coaching. Clara helps parents to create the work-life balance they want through career and return to work individual and group coaching, as well as offering CV and flexible working request feedback, mock interviews and consultancy to business.

In the show we discuss:

  • A definition of work-life balance
  • How important is it to have that balance
  • How, as parents, we are role modelling for our children
  • The difference between 'want' and 'should'
  • Why it feels so hard to get that balance right - technology and society's expectations
  • For women going back to work after a career break, how to approach employers about flexible working or part-time work

Clara's top tips for ambitious women who want to confidently balance work and life "You can do anything but you can't do everything. Be realistic about what you can achieve in a day."

Confident Conversations is a weekly podcast show for ambitious women about confidently balancing work and life, hosted by me, Sherry Bevan, Author, Coach & Speaker. Because I love having conversations about career and confidence.

This week's episode 004 Following last week's conversation with former BBC Apprentice candidate, Aleksandra King, this week I talk to Rebecca Jeffery fired in Week 6, after confusing tagine with tahini and soup for soap. And anyway, how's a Manchester girl supposed to know how far Streatham is from Canary Wharf.

Known as Becs, she is a freelance copywriter, bookworm, mum, tea drinker and sausage dog owner.

She joined her sister's company 3 years ago; together they have built a successful design & marketing business that fits around life and family. Her business plan for The Apprentice was built around recruiting other parents who want work that works.

Our conversation (over a cup of tea, of course) discussed:

  • how lonely it can be working for yourself
  • the pros and cons of running a business with your sister
  • how to make business work around your children
  • she applied for The Apprentice on a whim, encouraged by her brain surgeon brother-in-law
  • outsource the skills you don't have (like accounting which Fi & Becs outsource to their Dad!)
  • being a parent doesn't make you any less ambitious in your career or your business

Her top tip for ambitious women "Don't apologise for wanting to work in a different way."

Confident Conversations is a weekly podcast show for ambitious women about confidently balancing work and life, hosted by me, Sherry Bevan, Author, Coach & Speaker. Because I love having conversations about career and confidence.

This week’s episode 003 This week, I talk to Aleksandra King, Communications Consultant, and better known (this month) as the BBC Apprentice candidate who quit before she was fired. The day after she quit the show, I wrote a post for Birds on the Blog about whether she was right to quit. My take was that she had quit BECAUSE she is strong not because she’s not. And that she recognised the conflict with her core values.

In this conversation with Aleksandra recorded a couple of weeks after she left the show, we discussed how your values affect how you work and who you choose to work with.

We also discussed:

  • the friendships she developed in the house
  • how it was love at first sight when she met her husband
  • how women are so often tough on ourselves and don’t ask for help
  • her love of spreadsheets (music to my ears being an Excel geek myself)
  • how she balances work and life
  • her personal values and how these affect the way she works and who she chooses to work with
  • whether or not The Apprentice is intrinsically biased against parents

Aleksandra’s top tip for ambitious women “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help doesn’t take anything away from you.

GUEST: Aleksandra King
HOSTED BY: Sherry Bevan

Confident Conversations is a weekly podcast show for ambitious women about confidently balancing work and life, hosted by me, Sherry Bevan, Author, Coach & Speaker. Because I love having conversations about career and confidence.

This week’s episode In a previous episode (CC001) I talked about overwhelm: signs we might notice, why we experience it, and how we can cope or even better prevent it.

This week’s episode is about how to spot the signs of stress or overwhelm in our partners and how to deal with it.

I turned to Gill Walton at Purple Skies Consulting to find out more about this topic. Gill works with people who are stuck in their careers and need help getting unstuck. And sometimes it’s stress that’s keeping them stuck.

In the show we discuss:

  • Signs of overwhelm, stress or burnout in our partners
  • What we can do to support them
  • How men deal with overwhelm and stress differently, putting emotions to one side
  • Why men walk out of the room when they come home to a stressfest
  • The caveman’s reaction to a fight or flight situation

Gill’s top tip for ambitious women “It’s not the stress that is destructive, but the way that we respond to the stress”.

Confident Conversations is a weekly podcast show, hosted by me, Sherry Bevan, Author, Coach & Speaker. I love having conversations about career and confidence. In my podcast I interview ambitious women as well as those employers who value female talent.

This first episode is about how to cope with overwhelm.

My name is Sherry Bevan and I run The Confident Mother. After more than 25 years in professional services, I set up my own business so that I could balance work and life more confidently.

Now I help other ambitious women get clear on what they really want and then find the confidence to go and do it.

Many of the mums that I talk to sometimes struggle with how to cope with overwhelm.

In the show, you will explore:

  • the signs of overwhelm
  • the reasons that we experience so much overwhelm
  • how choice overwhelm makes it difficult to decide
  • information overload
  • how women take on too much: our need to please and the need for perfectionism
  • five ideas that help my clients cope with overwhelm so that they get more done.

The five ideas to cope with overwhelm:

  1. Acknowledge and accept your feelings of overwhelm
  2. Prioritise and focus to free up your creativity
  3. Self-care to boost your resilience
  4. Ask for help
  5. Boundaries - when to flex and when to hold firm
