Introduction: The rising prices and empty shelves in stories are becoming more and more conspicuous. A series of past events have led to our current experiences. Can Biden Administration and we, voters, do anything? (Shared by a Guest Speaker, Col. Billy Bearden)
Introduction: There are less than two months for the Christmas. With the increasing inflation caused by earlier high tariffs of U.S-China trade war, and nearly two years of pandemic, the price of every consumer goods goes up. Yet, many of us feel that we have to observe the holiday season with gifts, decorations, food, travel and many so called necessities for the season. In today's episode, Dr. Esther Lee, a stock trader and investor, is offering some basic tips in four areas to control our Christmas budget and to avoid post holiday’s blues.
An Upper Room magazine author once used a sponge as an analogy for forgiving. It’s impossible to squeeze out apple juice from a sponge soaked with bitter coffee. Similarly, a heart filled of bitterness caused by unforgiveness can not produce joy and peace. (Ephesians 4:31, Luke 6:28 and Mathew 18:21-35.)
Introduction: Financial stress is a widespread experience. As the inflation continues to rise, let's discuss how to reduce financial stress by avoiding instant gratification during current increasing costs of consumers’ goods.
Introduction: Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, like a pyramid shape reflects the levels of needs for human survival. It consists of five levels: physical, safety, love and belong, esteem and self-actualization. Ideally, we all hope to reach the top level of self-actualization. Possible? Let’s explore the topic.
Introduction: As our nation is getting divided (less united) daily due to various issues, I wonder why we can’t unite for common needs and interests. I surmise that FREEDOM is our most wanted and cherished trait of our nation. Let’s explore how free we are as law binding citizens.
No two people are the same, even identical twins. Interpersonal conflicts are often caused by personal differences even as we are overcoming the COVID-19. Reducing major differences that induces conflict could be achieved via a changing process of both or multiple parties. (Roman 12:2 - ". . . Be transformed by the renewing of your mind . . .")
More than one year ago, a survey from Charles Schwab looked at 1000 410(k) plan participants nationwide, on average, Americans believe they need $1.7 million to retire. Wow, sounds like a big figure! Here Dr. Lee is suggesting three basic steps to enhance the growth and performance of your accounts during this challenging market.
Introduction: In the U.S. A., there are many subgroups existing within all racial and ethnic groups. To make America truly a great/united nation under God, we need to be sensitive to individual differences and avoid over-generalization or stereotyping of any group. Not everyone is the same within one racial or ethnic group; everyone is different as an individual. Better not assume everyone in a racial group is the same.
Introduction: As of April 15, we have seen at least 147 mass shootings (involving 4 or more deaths) in 2021 according to data from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a non-profit based in Washington. Between March 16 and April 15, we had at least 45 mass shootings. Five were in the western states; nine in the east; 12 in the Midwest and 19 in the South. Among all, Texas ranks top with five shootings within one month.
Introduction: Life is full of challenges but the process we manage is even more challenging and pivotal for our next steps. Many “lemons” in our life can be turned into delicious “lemonade” with positive thinking and actions. Need to stop the Murphy’s law as it is surfacing. Here are two original personal text messages between a family member and me that prompted this unconventional sharing format.
Introduction: Is “Buying America-Made Only” a good policy or trend for all Americans? As a democratic nation, we need to have the freedom for meeting our basic needs regardless of our income, and social status. Everyone can test the efficacy of this policy through a personal first-hand experience. Here is mine.
Introduction: After more than one year of lockdown due to COVID-19, many things have changed in our lives. Positive attitude is the key for maintaining our mental and emotional health. Yet, we also need self-control to maintain our physical health as our lifestyles are changing. Let’s focus on the challenge of our growing body size here.
Differences among nations at times are similar to the differences experienced among people. Everyone is different and so is every nation! Like in a family, peaceful relationships around the world can only be achieved through mutual acceptance and respect. Let's start at the personal level and then expand to bigger areas.
Introduction: Being a retired professor of developmental psychology and multicultural studies, Dr. Lee shares the analogy of raising children and interacting with foreign nations. Many parents don’t want to be told about how to raise their children. Similarly, foreign nations around of the world feel the same. They don’t want other countries to interfere with their domestic affairs. Is recently announced Biden foreign policy reflecting that?
Introduction: God has really blessed me with diverse and exciting careers in my adopted homeland of America. I am proud of my records of contributions to this wonderful nation. Here, I would like to wear my professor hat of multicultural studies to share the following historical facts with you.
Introduction: Senator Ted Cruz of Texas told the press on Feb. 18, 2021 that his daughters wanted to go to Cancun with their friends during the snow and cold stricken home in Houston. As a good/spoiling dad, he decided to take the girls to Cancun. Sounds like it was truly a teachable moment for many parents, good and bad. Let’s think about the important trait of EMPATHY for human survival while we are still struggling with COVID-19.
Due to COVID-19, we know that exercise is important to our physical and mental health, but many people still think they don't have time to exercise. In today's episode, Dr. Esther S. Lee is here to discuss the tips and ways to fit Your workout in your busy days.

Loving others as you love yourself is a good moral advice. Yet, we tend to overlook that this advice requires us to first love ourselves. We cannot help others unless we first meet our own basic needs and are in good physical shape to do it. Let’s be kind and love ourselves first during this national challenging time.
When Dr. Lee was serving on the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, it’s common to use revolving door describing criminals. Lately, the political climate in our nation, especially in Washington, D.C. has prompted her to think about its similarities with prison systems. Here are just some basic facts about the “games” in D.C. No surprise, they are common at all levels of our political system.
On this New Year Day, we not only celebrate it with joy and hope but also need to focus on the future not the past year of 2020. (Philippians 3:14). The year of 2020 was a great challenge for all of us. Joseph in the Bible is an excellent example for us. (Genesis 37-45) Yet, we all need to embrace the new 2021 with enthusiasm and positive perspectives. Looking forward and forgetting the past.
This is a rerun posted in 2019. Although we have been experiencing a great deal of challenges in the year of 2020, let's continue counting our blessings beyond the physical and financial difficulties. Regardless of our differences in race, religion, ethnicity, social economic status, political standings and many additional variables, we at least have enjoyed peace and liberty as compared with other nations around the world. It’s also a good time for us to consider the future direction and challenges of this great nation.
This presentation was prepared by the River of Life Christian Church (www.rolcc.net) in Santa Clara, CA for a conference in 2013. Esther was one of their speakers.
The COVID-19 has changed everyone's life in various aspects including our family relationships. However, we all can overcome the challenges with positive attitudes and trust in God. The YouTube is available at: https://youtu.be/bTz3s8eEAOY
With many current conflicts going on, "Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near." Philippians 4:5. Let’s all try to use gentle touching with people around us. Let’s pray for this great nation and all involved people.
The double great stress of COVID-19 and presidential election may induce certain levels of conflicts for interpersonal relationships. Yet, God created us all with unique traits, features, and personalities. Such differences have made our world very exciting and beautiful! However, it requires certain skills to get along with people who are different from us especially we are not familiar with them. Today, Dr. Esther Lee is to discuss the stages and skills to live positively in this colorful world, not only with people but also with things.
Let's re-run this one. As of 2/22/ 2020 the death toll from the covid-19 (coronavirus) outbreak rose up to 76936 infected and 2442 (0.032) died in China with some cases in 25 countries.Yet, World Health Organization officials said the mortality rate was relatively low and less deadly than SARS (0.10%). Last June 5, 2019, CDC reported that Swine Flu (H1N1) in 2009 infected 61 million Americans and killed 12K during the pandemic. Let’s briefly run through the most deadly epidemics in the US.
It’s natural to get mad at times with different level of madness. The challenge is how do we handle our madness or anger. There is much literature addressing the causes and management of habitual anger. Here we merely focus some methods people shared when they got mad without being destructive. Maybe, some listeners can also share their coping methods for madness by emailing us at estherlee@fnplweb.org.
This is a sad life experience but a powerful spiritual uplifting! Under the challenges of COVID-19, I am thankful that this lady shared her prayer with me nearly nine years after its occurrence.
Note: This is a rerun for us to re-think current global "Recession" and Trade Wars. Will we play alone without the status of global leadership in the future? President’s micro view of the international affairs has blindsided him at the expenses of average Americans. The UK published magazine with worldwide subscription, The Economist, in June, 2019 had an article with a headline; America is aggressively deploying a new economic arsenal to assert its power.
As people are concerned about the possibility of the second wave of COVID-19, today, Dr. Esther Lee is sharing her observation of the birds' behavior around her house and reflecting on our life.
Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?"
Introduction: Our lives slowly get back to so called “normal” but not really. In fact, our lives are no long the same, whether we like or not. Changes have taken place in our lives with or without our awareness. We need to have a positive attitude to welcome a new beginning. (2 Corinthians 12:9 ". . . My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. . . ")

The following true story about marital relationship prompted me to think about our international relations with other nations. The New York Times reported on Feb. 18 that “European officials are fearful that if President Donald Trump wins a second term, the hostility he has shown to European allies will continue — and result in a ‘permanent shift’ that creates distance between the U.S. and Europe.”
"Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him" Psalm 127:3 .
Today Dr. Lee, a former university professor of Developmental Psychology, is here discussing parenting skills in child rearing.
Note: This is a rerun for our Global COVID-19 crisis. Since we are a world super power, our media tends to focus on our domestic events much more than on foreign events. Yet, whether we like or not, as a world leader, we cannot ignore the news in other nations especially those affect our national security and future interests.
Amid COVID-19 fallout, on 3/3 Federate Reserve Board had an emergency rate cut of 0.5% but only spooked the Wall Street ending with Dow’s drop of 786 points. On 3/12, the Stock Market dropped to the lowest since 1987. It's expected that FED will drop more the following week due to the economic impact caused by COVID-19 worldwide. Let’s examine what normally causes the interest rates up or down, except in global crisis or emergency.
Chinese hospitals overflowing with COVID-19 patients weeks ago now, as of March 2, have empty beds. The World Health Organization’s Bruce Aylward told reporters in Beijing, “Other countries can take lessons from China’s handling of the COVID-19 epidemic.” Let’s briefly summarize what the government did and interviews I conducted over the phone with people in China in two episodes.
I was overwhelmingly touched by the short Chinese video entitled “wordless.” It depicted the mobilization of medical personnel from all parts of China to WuHan, like going to a war zone to combat the COVID-19. Among them were volunteer experts of respiration, influenza, epidemiology. Streaming of trucks transported thousands of brave medical professionals to the gravely silent city, WuHan. A mother tucked packages of snack into her son’s backpack and hug him with tears for goodbye. Without doubt, her only prayer was for his safe return.
Communication for interpersonal relationships is always a challenge including mostly used verbal communication. Face to face verbal interaction is even more challenging than other forms. Frequently, somehow, there is a gap between a speaker and listener if they don’t know each other well. This challenge persists everywhere, at home, at work, in public places and even instantaneous online. Let’s just start with the basis of 3 Gs and 2 Es.

Introduction: No one wants criticism but it’s an unavoidable reality. However, we could turn the unpleasant feelings into beneficial results for our life either in a short term or long term. It’s hard to make progress or improvement in our life without input from others, either free or paid. (I Peter 3:9)

Communication, in a broad sense, is the key to maintaining interpersonal relationships. In general, communication is shaped by generation, culture and personality. Here, we will focus on how to verbally communicate with children. Yet, the basic principles are applicable to all human interactions.

Being in the United States for more than a half of century as an educator, Dr. Lee has witnessed the educational changes in this wonderful nation. Such changes have greatly impacted our work force/ethics. Instead of presenting many statistics, she is to focus on the changing work ethics of the general population in both the US and China.

Putting items away or not, often causes annoyance or even conflicts among people. It’s supposedly to be a good organizational habit to put things away after use. Yet, not everyone agrees with that. Here is one solution possibly practiced by some affluent Americans who have misplaced certain items, including clothes, kitchen items, office supplies and so on.
