This is a special Labor Express Radio Interview: UE General President Carl Rosen on the legacy of UE Hall.
A few months ago UE General President Carl Rosen informed me that the union has decided to sell historic UE Hall at 37 S. Ashland. It was certainly not surprising. As Carl explains in the the interview, the Hall had begun its life in the early 20th century as a club for Chicago’s wealthy westside elite. As that elite abandoned the city mid century and South Ashland Ave. became a working class area, the union purchased the building in the 1940’s. But by the early 21st century the elite had returned and regentrification has transformed the area around UE Hall into a neighborhood of high priced condos and skyrocketing property taxes. It therefore only makes sense for the union, rather than pouring money into the ailing structure, sell it and re-invest those funds into building the union. It also makes sense to find a new home in one of Chicago’s remaining working class communities.
UE Hall has a place in the heart of anyone who has spent any time active in Chicago’s labor movement. It has been an organizing center for so many labor struggles in this city in the past seven decades; and not just those of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America. Few places have opened themselves up to hosting labor militants, radicals, social movement activists and others the way UE Hall has. There is also very much a personal history here as UE Hall has been home to both Labor Beat TV and Labor Express radio for our entire 30 year plus existence.
In this interview Carl Rosen discusses the history of the hall and describes the murals that decorate the buildings interior.

On this episode of Labor Express Radio, we remember Karen Lewis, former President of the Chicago Teachers Union, with audio from the Labor Beat TV and the Labor Express Radio archives. Karen passed away Feb. 7th. She leaves a tremendous legacy of a union transformed from one that had made concessions in contract after contract to union that won two historic strikes, and became a model for other unions around the country of how a militant, member driven, social justice focused union should operate. She also fought for a public school system under attack and won new investments in our schools. This special program is longer than our usual programs (96 minutes) and includes audio left out of the terrestrial broadcast on WLPN. The longer format allows us to include more of Karen’s speeches (and one complete speech) over the past decade.

It is a victory for the union who had fought hard to ensure the safety of school personnel and students alike during this pandemic. We also mourn the passing of Karen Lewis, President Emerita of the CTU, whose leadership and vision helped build the union into one of the most militant, progressive and powerful union locals in the nation. Our guest, Jackson Potter, was one of the founding members of CORE, the reform caucus behind the leadership of the union under Karen Lewis and Jesse Sharkey.

On this episode of Labor Express Radio, REBELLION 2020!: Uprisings against racism and police brutality erupt across the nation in response to the murder of yet another Black man, George Floyd at the hands of yet another White cop, Derek Chauvin. But this time the African-American community and its allies have come out into the streets day after day, week after week, across the nation to say enough is enough. And this time, at least one union, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), is doing more than just issuing a statement of support for the protesters. They are making their solidarity real and concrete by telling their members that the union has their backs if the drivers refuse to be conscripted by the police into shuttling them to protest locations and taking arrested protesters to detention facilities. But as CTA bus driver and elected Executive Board member of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 241 Erek Slater will tell you, at least in Chicago, the ATU International presidents statement means little to CTA management who is willing to punish bus drivers who refuse to cooperate with police in regards to the demonstrations. Drivers have faced harassment and intimidation, and in the case of Slater, suspension, for simply discussing the issue with his co-workers.

Labor Express Radio Audio Extra: Chicago bus driver and elected ATU Local 241 board member denounces CTA management’s suspension for discussing solidarity with anti-police brutality protesters.
CTA Bus Driver and elected executive board member of ATU Local 241 Erek Slater is fighting an unlawful suspension by CTA management who have repeatedly harassed him and his fellow bus drivers, denying them their 1st amendment rights as well as violating labor law and union contract protections. It appears that at the heart of the harassment is the bus drivers' discussions of how they should respond to the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) International's position that bus drivers have a right not to cooperate with police in their operations against anti-police brutality protesters. Around the country, especially in NYC and in Minneapolis, bus drivers, in solidarity with the protesters, have refused to cooperate with the police. A unknown number of Chicago bus drivers have done the same but have faced varying levels of disciplining or threats from CTA management. It appears that CTA management is uncomfortable with employees even discussing the issue on their own time and in spaces designated for union discussions. At a press conference at Federal Plaza on Monday, Erek Slater spoke along with his lawyer and other assembled supporters about the situation. Erek covers a lot of ground in his speech speaking to not only the ATU's position on the anti-police brutality protesters, but also the ongoing concerns over COVID-19 which has claimed the lives of an inordinate number of transit workers around the country. Erek Slater speaks here in his own capacity and not representing the CTA or ATU.
Thanks to Labor Express Radio reporter Michelle Burke for capturing the audio of the press conference.

On this episode of Labor Express Radio, nurses at Stroger hospital, members of NNU, protest hospital administrators refusal to follow CDC guidelines, putting employees and patients at risk.* Moises Zavala and Eric Basir are back. This time Moises is talking about organizing in the cannabis industry and Eric is discussing his own battle with COVID-19 and with his employer, the CTA, over testing and sick leave. And Marianela D'Aprile, member of the National Political Committee of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), discusses the “Bernie bump”. The Bernie Sanders for president campaign may be over but just like in 2016, that campaign has swelled the ranks of the DSA which is full steam ahead on its work for Medicare4All, a Green New Deal and now has launched new partnerships with several unions.

Labor Express Radio Audio Extra: Nurses at Stroger Hospital in Chicago hold rally protesting lack of PPE are joined by transit workers with the same complaint against the CTA.
Nurses, members of National Nurses United (NNU), held a rally outside Stroger hospital in Chicago on April 27, 2020. They were protesting practices and policies of hospital management they say is preventing the nurses from accessing needed PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and do not observe CDC guidelines for how hospitals should operate in order to protect both staff and patients. They were joined by transit workers who have similar complaints against the CTA. Credit for this audio goes to Labor Express Radio reporter Dale Lehman who is also heard asking questions in the later half of this piece.

Labor Express Radio Interview: Marianela D'Aprile, member of the National Political Committee of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), discusses the “Bernie bump”. Both in 2016 and now again, in 2020, the DSA has seen massive increases in membership. As a result, the DSA has become the closest thing to a mass socialist party we have seen in the United States in at least 70 years. At the same time, the organization has worked to avoid the limitations that come with electoralism. Embracing a “class struggle election work” strategy that privileges movement building as much as winning elections. The DSA has also launched new partnerships at the national and local level with several unions. All these topics are discussed in the interview.

Interview: This is the full, unedited interview with transit worker Eric Basir. Excerpts were aired on the 4/19/2020 and the 5/3/2020 episodes of Labor Express Radio. Eric Basir, train motorman and member of ATU Local 308 discusses Transit Workers Unite's petition calling for workers action in the face of COVID-19 and the job action of the CTA train cleaners who were forced to work in unsafe conditions. Eric himself, like far too many transit workers has contracted COVID-19. He has not ended up in the hospital but the symptoms have been dragging out and preventing his ability to return to work. Unfortunately Eric, like many other CTA employees has struggled to get tested and then struggled to get sick days even though CTA policy is that he should not return to work until his symptoms have subsided. Eric is speaking here on behalf of himself and Transit Workers Unite, he is not representing ATU or CTA in this interview. The petition he refers to can be found here… http://chng.it/L7sDtcPH8f

This is the full 4-19-2020 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.
On this episode of Labor Express Radio, we continue to look at how the labor and other social movements are responding to the coronavirus crisis. The COVID-19 crisis is sparking worker's self-activity in a way not seen in generations. How are unions responding to this exciting development? Along with the theme of social solidarity in the time of physical distancing, this theme of the rise of grassroots working-class action is something I seek to explore on Labor Express and its starts tonight. Moises Zavala, Director of Organizing for Local 881 of the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) talks about the Raymundo Foods workers walk-out. Erek Slater, bus driver, elected board member of ATU Local 241 and founding member of Transit Workers Unite and Eric Basir train motorman and member of ATU Local 308 discuss Transit Workers Unite's petition calling for workers action in the face of COVID-19 and the job action of the CTA train cleaners. And Carl Rosen of UE discusses his letter in In These Times entitled... “We Need the Labor Movement To Organize Worker Fightback in the Face of the COVID-19 Crisis”.

Labor Express Radio Interview: Erek Slater of Transit Workers Unite and COVID-19 survivor on the “Safety First for Transit Workers Now” Petition and the impact of COVID-19 on transit workers.
Jerry Mead-Lucero of Labor Express Radio interviews Erek Slater, bus driver, elected board member of ATU Local 241 and founding member of Transit Workers Unite, recovering himself from his own bout of COVID-19, about the devastating impact of the crisis on transit workers and the petition his organization, along with several others including Local 100 Fightback and ATU 308 for Justice Coalition issued recently calling on their employers - the transit authorities, their unions, and the relevant political powers to make transit workers and transit riders safety top priority and put safety measures and control directly in the hands of the frontline workers themselves. The demands are bold and call for a form of worker control rarely advocated in such petitions.

Labor Express Radio Interview: Carl Rosen - General President of UE discusses how unions can and must organize a militant, bottom up worker fightback in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
Jerry Mead-Lucero of Labor Express Radio interviews Carl Rosen, General President of United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE) about his recent article in In These Times magazine entitled “We Need the Labor Movement To Organize Worker Fightback in the Face of the COVID-19 Crisis”. Rosen layouts an agenda for organized labor to meet the needs clearly expressed by the working class in the explosion of self-activity we have witnessed in recent weeks with strikes, walk-outs, and other shop floor actions by both union and non-union workers alike disgusted with their bosses unwillingness to take the dangers of COVID-19 seriously. It is a bold call that includes partnerships with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and other forms of progressive, democratic unionism we have not seen in generations in the labor movement in this country and points to the current moment as a potential turning point for organized labor and the U.S. working class.

Labor Express Radio Interview: Moises Zavala - UFCW Local 881, Raymundo's Food workers walk-out over COVID-19 concerns and organizing workers in the cannabis industry.
Jerry Mead-Lucero of Labor Express Radio interviews Moises Zavala, Director of Organizing for Local 881 United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) about the workers at Raymundo's Food Group in Bedford Park, Illinois, who walked out of their factory on Friday April 3rd and have remained out since. They took action after their bosses refused to address their safety concerns when two of their co-workers were diagnosed with COVID-19 but still were required to work for several days. The workers are self-quarantining and want guarantees their workplace will be sterilized before they return as well as hazard pay. The union stands behind the workers' demands, but they are still in negotiations with the company over a first contract and were not the organizers of the walk out. The demands and the walk out itself were organized by the rank-and-file in the kind of worker self-activity that we are seeing become quite common in the face of the coronavirus crisis at union and non-union workplaces alike. Moises also talks about UFCW’s efforts to organize workers in the burgeoning cannabis industry and recent success in this effort. And how the union has negotiated protections for grocery store workers during the COVID-19 crisis.

Solidarity in the time of COVID-19 and "social distancing". This will be the theme explored on tonight's and future episodes of Labor Express Radio for the foreseeable future. It starts with tonight's program which features interviews with Chicago labor and immigrants rights activist Isaac Silver about the launching of the Facebook group, People's Coronavirus Response, which grew from a network of 2 to 10,000, practically overnight, and Jorge Mujica, an organizer for Arise Chicago workers center about the new coalition formed in Chicago in response to the coronavirus crisis as well as political developments in Mexico. Also includes a description of the demands of the new COVID19 Chicago coalition by Maria Moreno, Financial Secretary of the Chicago Teachers Union. Note that this online version of the episode is about 8 minutes longer than the episode that broadcast on WLPN. The radio broadcast version required that the interview with Jorge Mujica be edited for time. The full interview here includes Jorge’s comments on the political scene in Mexico, including some provocative, perhaps controversial arguments in regards to AMLO’s handling of the coronavirus crisis, for which Mexico’s president has received considerable criticism.

Erek Slater, Chicago public transit bus driver, elected shop steward and executive board member, of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Local 241, discusses both the recent elections for leadership of both ATU Local 241 and 308 and more importantly the contract negotiations for both locals with CTA management. Their contracts expired on Dec. 31st, 2019 and there has been little progress on a new contracts for either local so far. Erek offers his personal perspective of what he thinks it will take for transit workers to win major improvements in their new contracts, based on the experience of the last contract settled just two years ago and how such a strategy could unite transit employees and transit users in a fight to improve public transit for all. PLUS National Nurses United (NNU) issues an important statement on the Coronavirus crisis.

Interview conducted by Labor Express reporter Michelle Burke at the “Transit Workers United 2020 Contract Speak Out” on February 25th, 2020. Michelle speaks with Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) El train motorman Eric Basir, member of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 308 and CTA bus driver Erek Slater elected shop steward and executive board member of ATU Local 241 about the issues facing CTA employees as they enter their third month working under an expired contract. The previous contract expired on Dec. 31st, 2019 and negotiations on a new contract did not start in earnest until January with little progress so far. Eric and Erek are both members of Transit Workers United which seeks to unite members of both unions with passengers in a broader fight to not only advance contract demands but fight for better public transit for all; overcoming a certain amount of traditional separation between both unions and the unions and the riding public. Some of the top issues include over-reliance on part-time workers, long shifts with inconsistent time off and violence against employees on the job. In particular, Eric and Erek respond to recent proposals by CTA management to add rear passenger loading stations at the back of CTA buses and to increase police presence at CTA stations and on CTA vehicles. Both Erics/Ereks suggesting more union employees on the trains and buses and reducing fares are better solutions to reducing violence and increasing safety than militarizing public transit. I apologize for the rough quality of the audio. Michelle had to conduct the interview in windy winter conditions outdoors at the Brown Line terminal.

On January 19th the Chicago labor and social justice movements lost a dedicated organizer, spokesperson and fighter. James Thindwa touched many lives in a host of vital social movements in Chicago and beyond. Whether as an African solidarity activist, the staff director of Citizen Action Coalition of Indiana and Ohio, the lead organizer in Chicago for Metro Seniors in Action, the ED of Chicago Jobs with Justice or his last major organizing role as the Civic Engagement Coordinator at AFT, James was a powerful voice with a unique ability to speak with great moral clarity and vision on a host of topics important to working people and people of color. Over the next month or more I will endeavor to remember James contributions to the Chicago labor movement through his interviews conducted with either Labor Express Radio or Labor Beat TV as well as reminiscences with those closest to him. I start that tonight with two pieces from the archives. The first is audio from a Labor Beat TV video, originally released in December 2014, entitled “The Wage Slave and the Jackboot”, that connects the Fight for 15 with the fight against police brutality. The second is from even further back in the Labor Express radio archive. In the Summer of 2008, James birth nation of Zimbabwe where several of his family continues to reside, was going through one of its most difficult periods with a stolen election, inflation over 100,000 percent, drought, and serious food insecurity. I asked James to explain the situation facing the people of Zimbabwe and once again, James took a complex situation and explained it thoroughly, but also made it concise and accessible.

The Tale of Two Strikes: Labor Express examines the outcome of both the UAW strike at GM and the CTU strike at CPS, two potentially historic strikes with radically different results. Plus, strike victory at yet another Chicago charter school, Passages in the Edgewater Neighborhood. These strikes may well set the stage for union struggles in the public and private sectors for years to come. In the case of the CTU, the union has expanded what social justice, community based unionism is all about. Making demands for improving public education concrete and central to their new contract. They forced the Mayor and the Board of Education to bargain over issues like hiring more school support staff and reducing class sizes that the City in years past had deemed outside the realm of union contract bargaining. This bodes well for the future of public sector unions which remain strong despite the Janus decision. Will this strike like the last in 2012 inspire more teachers around the country to follow Chicago’s lead? At GM it is a different story, where the UAW ended the longest strike in a generation with a contract that largely locks in concessions made in the Great Recession. What does this mean for private sector unions which are already in decline?
