On Mission

Pastor Jayson Workman

Luke 10:25-37

South Gate - September 18, 2022

Introduction:

Compassion will take you to places and people that need Jesus and hope.

  1. Christ Confronts Superiority (vv. 29–32)

James 2:9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

  1. Christ Confronts Sin (v. 33)

Quote: “No gentile may enter the barricade which surrounds the sanctuary and enclosure. Anyone who is caught doing so will have himself to blame for his ensuing death.”

  1. Christ Calls Us to Serve (vv. 33–37)

Quote: “The first question the priest and the Levite asked was, “If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?” But the good Samaritan reversed the question: “If I do not stop and help this man, what will happen to him?” —Martin Luther King

On Mission

Matthew 28:16-20

Pastor Jayson Workman

South Gate Baptist Church — August 28th, 2022

Introduction

Being on mission with God means following Jesus’ final command.

  1. Element of availability (v. 16)

Matthew 28:7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.

1 Corinthians 15:6-7 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.

Quote: “The greatest ability is availability.”

  1. Element of worship (v. 17)
  2. Element of submission (v. 18)
  3. Element of obedience (v. 19)

GOING: Wherever they are that do not know Christ, wherever you may go that Christ is not named. It may be your school, your neighborhood, maybe around the world some place — taking the gospel where we live, work, & play.

BAPTIZING: This was an outward visible sign of obedience. It was an overt act of obedience by which a person demonstrated the reality of salvation.

TEACHING: A person who comes to Christ is willing to learn. So, our burden is to teach whatever Christ commanded for his disciples to follow.

  1. Element of power (v. 20)

Prayer: “Lord you care about this more than I do, so do what you will. Lord, you love this people more than I do, so reach them.”

Something Greater

Matthew 6:25–34

Pastor Jayson Workman

South Gate Baptist Church — August 21, 2022

Introduction:

Do you have a religious reputation or a real relationship with Jesus?

Faith in God’s purpose and promises overcomes our fears.

  1. Calling—to live something greater

Jesus stands in the midst of our fears and call us to a life of faith.

  1. Challenge—to look at God’s promises instead of your problems

We maximize our problems and minimize God’s promises.

Quote: “Often times, the situation at hand looms larger in our minds than the promises of God.” —Jerry Bridges

Psalm 121:4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

  1. Confidence—to have enough faith to pursue God’s Kingdom

Quote: “We’re called to a life of faith, but faith isn’t natural to us. Doubt and worry are. So, God in grace works to craft faith in us.” —Paul Tripp

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Quote: “God prefers the impossible. Although He cares for our needs before we know that we have them, His mighty acts are showcased best against the backdrop of insurmountable odds. Anything less would detract from His greatness.” —Edward Welch

Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Quote: “Faith is about knowing God in an intimate, personal way and trusting God because He is trustworthy, Faith sees more, not less.”

Greater Than

Matthew 6:19-24

Pastor Jayson Workman

South Gate— August 14, 2022

Introduction

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

The path to something greater is living for eternity

  1. Purpose—We are called to a greater significance. (vv. 19–20)

Question: What do you think will be most important 5 minutes after you die?

  1. Passion—We are called to a greater affection. (v. 21)

Jesus wants to be our primary source of security and significance.

  1. Priority—We are called to a greater clarity. (vv. 23–24)

Hebrews 12:2 . . . looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. . . .

Greater Than: Fierce Devotion

Pastor Jayson Workman

Matthew 6:16-18

August 7, 2022

Introduction:

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

The secret to something greater is a fierce devotion to God.

  1. Confrontation of character (v. 16)

Their pursuit of REPUTATION was a choice to forfeit their REWARD.

CHARACTER > reputation

Pretending to be religious isn’t the same as pursuing Jesus.

  1. Cost of compromise (v. 16)

Compromised motives will compromise your reward.

  1. Calling to communion (vv. 17–18)

Do you have a religious reputation or a real relationship with Jesus?

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. . . .

A heart fiercely devoted is determined to remove distractions.

City on a Hill: Love Your Enemies

Worship Minister Derick Mickan

Matthew 5:43–48

July 17, 2022

Big Idea:

God’s calling on us is not OUTRAGE, but to ENGAGE the world around us.

John 3:17 [ESV] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.

  1. Loving your enemies involves a COUNTERINTUITIVE mindset. [vv. 43–45]
  2. Loving your enemies EXPOSES your motives. [vv. 46–47]
  3. Loving your enemies will mean MATURING in love. [v. 48]

Instead of displaying OUTRAGE, try showing love that REDEEMS.

  • Begin dialogue with people instead of picking fights.

  • Stop posting divisive things on social media.

  • This week, specifically show love to someone who has opposed you.

John 13:34–35 [ESV] A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

City on a Hill: Integrity

Matthew 5:33-37

Pastor Jayson Workman

South Gate Baptist Church—July 10, 2022

Introduction:

A life of integrity is built when our words and actions are true.

  1. Resist looking for a loophole. (v. 33)
  2. Reflect the highest absolute truth. (vv. 34–36)

Proverbs 6:16-17 There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood. . . .

Proverbs 12:22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.

  1. Realize the importance of being truthful. (v. 37)

Deception destroys your character.

Luke 16:10 One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.

Deception destroys relationships.

Deception destroys your witness.

City on a Hill: Marriage

Pastor Jayson Workman

Matthew 5:31–32; 19:1–9

Introduction:

Commitment flows out of a marriage when Christ is the cornerstone.

  1. The concern is not moral conformity. (vv. 19:1–3)
  2. The commitment is a covenant. (vv. 19:4–6)

Quote: “These words are often said in a perfunctory way, but they speak to the deep spiritual reality of marriage: it is something God has done. To think of it as anything less is to diminish it.” —Matt Chandler, Mingling of Souls

  1. The cornerstone is Christ.

Continue to pursue Christ.

Continue to pursue your spouse’s heart.

Continue to confess.

Quote: “Every failure in your life, every shortcoming, every stumble, every bloody knee, every broken nose is redeemed by Christ and used by the Holy Spirit to help shape, mold, and serve what’s behind you.” —Matt Chandler

City on a Hill: Lust

Matthew 5:27-30

Pastor Jayson Workman

South Gate Baptist Church—June 26, 2022

Introduction:

Sexual purity is a journey; it’s about progress, not perfection.

Be careful not to seek satisfaction in sex; seek it from the Savior.

  1. Struggle for purity (vv. 27–28)

The meaning

The motive

Quote: “Sexual purity begins in the heart with a love for God that overwhelms all other loves that battle for the allegiance of the heart.” —Paul David Tripp

  1. Seriousness of purity (vv. 29–30)
  2. Steps (in the struggle) to a pure life

Quote: “Your standing with God is never based on the degree of purity of your heart and hands but on the perfect life of Christ lived for your sake.”

Pursue Jesus

Pursue community

Quote: “Lust blooms in the soil of disengagement.” —Jay Stringer

City On a Hill: Anger

Matthew 5:21–26

Pastor Jayson Workman

June 19, 2022 — South Gate Baptist

Introduction:

When anger RULES in your heart, it will RUIN your life.

  1. Anger is rooted in the heart. (vv. 21–22)

Matthew 15:19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.

Luke 6:45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

  1. Anger is reckless. (v. 22)

Hebrews 12:14–15 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;

Gives the enemy a foothold

Destroys you and others around you

A heart RULED by anger will RUIN the best things in your life.

  1. Anger must be repented (vv. 23–26)

Forgiven people forgive people.

City On a Hill: Relationship, not Religion

Matthew 5:17-20

Pastor Jayson Workman

South Gate Baptist Church—June 12, 2022

A religion without a relationship is just a bunch of rules.

The foundation of our faith is grace, not our good works.

  1. Rules without a relationship is just religion.

It cannot save you.

Romans 8:3-4 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

It cannot sanctify you.

Romans 5:20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more. . . .

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

Titus 2:11-12 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age. . . .

  1. Renew a pursuit of Jesus, not rule-keeping.

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  1. Renewal will result when you pursue Jesus.

Proverbs 24:16 Though a righteous man falls seven times, he will get up. . . .

Blessed Are the Peacemakers

Worship Minister Derick Mickan

Matthew 5:9

June 5, 2022

Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Big Idea: Pursuing peace is the pathway to untold blessing.

  1. A Peacemaker finds Blessing
  2. A Peacemaker builds Bridges
  3. A Peacemaker is Beloved

Important Point: The kingdom of God cannot be at war within itself.

Four questions that can help you identify if you are being a peacemaker:

  1. Are you aiming for restoration or for vindication?
  2. Are you being a comfort to others or a burden?
  3. If you are not in agreement, why?
  4. Would you characterize your life as one lived in peace?

Kingdom Manifesto: Pure in Heart

Pastor Jayson Workman

Matthew 5:8

May 29th, 2022

Introduction:

A pure heart precedes a powerful life.

John 1:12 But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name. . . .

  1. A heart RESCUED from brokenness

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable—who can understand it?

Luke 6:45 A good man produces good out of the good storeroom of his heart. An evil man produces evil out of the evil storeroom, for his mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.

  1. A heart RELENTLESSLY devoted to Jesus

James 4:4 Adulteresses! Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the world’s friend becomes God’s enemy.

  1. A heart rewarded for its DEVOTION

A heart fixed on CHRIST will never lack CLARITY.

Kingdom Makers: Blessed Are the Merciful

Matthew 5:7

Pastor Jayson Workman

May 22, 2022

Introduction:

A life without mercy is a life without freedom or purpose.

  1. Consider the MAGNITUDE of mercy
  2. CHARACTERIZED by mercy

Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Quote: “Forgiveness isn’t a feeling. It is an action You don’t forgive and forget. You forgive and remember that you forgave.” —Joby Martin

Mercy GIVEN doesn’t mean mercy RETURNED.

  1. CONSUMED with the MISSION of mercy

Quote: “Start praying for an opportunity to point people to Jesus, and that’s a prayer that God can’t wait to answer.”

Quote: “If we had an accurate view of eternity (both the joy of heaven and the hopelessness of hell), everything would change about our priorities.”

Kingdom Makers: Blessed Are the Hungry

Matthew 5:6

Pastor Jayson Workman

May 15, 2022 — South Gate Baptist Church

Introduction:

Your hunger can be the pathway to personal blessing or burden.

  1. Hungry and not Happy

God is more concerned with WHO you are not WHAT you do.

You don’t know Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have.

Quote: “We are half-hearted creatures, fooling around with drink and sex and ambition, when infinite joy is offered to us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by an offer of holiday at sea, we are far too easily pleased.”

  1. Subtract the Substitutes
  2. Source of Satisfaction

Place of Righteousness

Pursuit of Righteousness

Purpose of Righteousness

Proverbs 11:19 Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die.

Kingdom-Makers: Meek

Pastor Jayson Workman

May 8, 2022

Matthew 5:5

Introduction:

A surrendered life is a secure life.

  1. A call to radical submission/surrender

Philippians 2:3-8 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

  1. A call to restful confidence

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

  1. A call to real purpose

Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Kingdom Manifesto: Blessed Are the Mourners

Worship Minister Derick Mickan

Matthew 5:4

Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

THE BIG IDEA: Those who mourn over sin will receive comfort.

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  1. The self-righteous never discover satisfaction.

Matthew 23:11-12 The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

  1. Consequences of covering

Proverbs 28:13 Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.

Psalm 32:3-4 For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.

  1. Confession provides comfort.

Psalm 32:1-11

Kingdom-Makers mourn their sin but live on mission.

Kingdom Manifesto: Poor in Spirit

Matthew 5:1–3

Pastor Jayson Workman

South Gate—April 24, 2022

Introduction

Kingdom-makers live to BE something, not just DO something.

  1. Internal Pursuit

Because who we ARE will determine what we DO.

True spirituality starts on the INSIDE and touches the OUTSIDE.

Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

  1. Intentional Process

Romans 12:1–6

Pastor Jayson Workman

South Gate — April 10, 2022

Introduction:

Each and every one of us has been uniquely created to serve God.

  1. Plea for sacrificial service (v. 1)

When was the last time you surrendered your life to God?

  1. Picture of diversity (vv. 3–5)

There is greater strength and potential in diversity, not in similarities.

  1. Power of distinction (v. 6)

1 Peter 4:10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace. . . .

John Henry Newman, the author of Lead, Kindly Light, said, “God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not created to another. He has not created me for naught. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him. If in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If in sorrow my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about!”

Matthew 20:20–28

Pastor Jayson Workman

South Gate Baptist—April 3, 2022

Healthy churches/disciples are servants.

  1. Greatness is not self-promotion. (vv. 20–21)

Greatness is not in position—it is in perseverance.

Philippians 2:3-5 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,

  1. Greatness is not in power. (v. 25)

Philippians 2:6-8 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

  1. Greatness is found in serving. (vv. 27–28)

Quote: “True Christianity is not about adding Jesus to your life. Instead, it is about devoting myself completely to Him—submitting wholly to His will and seeking to please Him above all else.”

3 John 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

2 Corinthians 4:18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Hebrews 6:10 For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do.

DNA - Community

Acts 2:41–42

Pastor Jayson Workman

South Gate Baptist Church - March 27, 2022

Introduction:

Healthy disciples/churches are INTERDEPENDENT

  1. Community is Built Through a Devotion to Truth. (v. 42)
  2. Community is Built Through Devoted Fellowship (v. 42)

Quote: “Biblical community is first of all the sharing of common life in Christ.” —J.D. Grear

Objection to community

A. I don’t have anything in common.

B. I don’t have time in my schedule.

Quote: “The Christ follower outside of community is living in disobedience. Community is assumed. If I am out of community, I am out of God’s will.” —Ed Stetzer, Transformational Groups

C. I don’t want to be betrayed

Opportunity of community

A. Affection for each other

Romans 12:9-10 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.

B. Accountability to one another

Who asked you this week . . .

  • If you read your Bible this week? If you spent time in prayer?
  • How you treated your family? Spouse? Children?
  • If you shared Christ this week?
  • If you kept your mind pure?
  • If you gossiped? If you lied?

DNA—Our Identity

Acts 2:41-42

Pastor Jayson Workman

South Gate Baptist — March 13, 2021

We want to be a MOVEMENT, not an institution. MOVEMENTS, by definition, move, and if you’re not moving, you're not part of the movement.

A church is a church because it makes and multiples disciples.

  1. Christ (v. 41)

2 Peter 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Commences at salvation (v. 41a)

Continues with identification (v. 41b)

Cultivated through worship

Psalm 63:1 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Matthew 28:17 And when they saw him they worshiped him,

Hebrews 10:25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

  1. Community (vv. 42–46)

Through Teaching (v. 42)

Through Devoted Fellowship

Quote: “Teaching content will bring a crowd; teaching obedience makes a disciple.” —Jossy Chacko

  1. Commission (v. 43)

Quote: “Far too long, we’ve made it acceptable to sit week after week and do nothing and still call yourself a Christian.” —Ed Stetzer

Introduction:

I believe that God wants us to strive for unity and faithfulness.

  1. Strive for Unity in Maturity
  2. Strive for Unity in Message

The gospel goes way beyond our salvation and empowers our sanctification.

Be real in an authentic community of believers.

Living with Purpose

Romans 8:28–31

  1. God is ALWAYS at work in your life. (v. 28)

Philippians 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

  1. God is MOVING you to His eternal high purpose. (v. 29)

God’s purpose is more INTERNAL than it is EXTERNAL. The more you focus on WHO you are, the more WHAT you do comes into picture.

If you want to know what God has for your life, FOCUS on WHO you are.

  1. God created you to live with His purpose on your MIND. (v. 31)

Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

Introduction

Your worry is no match for God’s PLAN and PASSION for you.

  1. The Problem of Anxiety

People-pleasing: Somebody may not like, love, or respect us. When they don’t, we are afraid that we’re not really important. We hardly say no, because we’re afraid that we might lose the love/respect of others.

Perfectionism: We strive to make sure that everything is right all the time—the house, our clothes, our appearance, our work, our projects. Our identity is secure, as long as everyone around us thinks we are nailing it.

Protection (over): We try to protect from every hurt, illness, financial, and safety issue. I am not talking about neglect.

Performance/Purpose: If you are like me, there is a temptation to find your purpose in what you do and what you’ve accomplished. We must work to focus on our primary calling of being a disciple of Jesus.
