I believe this may be the most important series I have every preached. It’s called, “Happiness through Courage: Seven Spiritual Disciplines for Joy and Self-Esteem.” Over an eight-week period, I will be outlining seven spiritual disciplines that are designed to change the way we think and act. In this second week, we learn how to cultivate the first virtue: humility.
Our focus scripture is James 4:1-10.
I believe this may be the most important series I have every preached. It’s called, “Happiness through Courage: Seven Spiritual Disciplines for Joy and Self-Esteem.”
This series is so important because it will be addressing a problem that I believe is destroying Christianity: Moral weakness. It is well established that religious people, and Christians in particular, do more good deeds in the world than secular people. But it is also well established that we do just as much harm, if not more, than people with no religious beliefs at all. The secular world simply doesn’t see the good we do through philanthropy, volunteerism, public service, and activism. They do see all the harm we do through sin. And it’s killing us. It’s destroying the credibility of the Christian faith, and it’s wrecking our self-esteem.
For hundreds of years, we’ve taught people what to believe, what to do, and what not to do. But, other than praying for strength, we’ve never taught people how to avoid doing harm. This sermon series will attempt to do just that. Over an eight-week period, I will be outlining seven spiritual disciplines that are designed to change the way we think and act.
I have been working on this system for five years now. It represents a synthesis of classic Christian spiritual disciplines, positive psychology, and what I call “Wesleyan Stoicism.” It has made a huge change in my life, and I believe it can change yours too.
Today, we conclude our sermon series on the life of Moses by looking at the death of Moses. Did he die content? Would you be content under the same circumstances? The texts we will be using are Deuteronomy 32:48-52 & 34:1-6.
This week, Tim Allen does a cost/benefit analysis of discipleship. The sermon is based on Luke 18:18-29 and Hebrews 11:29-12:2.
This week, we talk about one of the saddest events in the history of ancient Israel: When they arrived at the Promised Land, but chose not to go in. Our scripture lesson is long... Numbers Chapters 13 & 14.

These decisions are currently focused on the debate over whether or not to perform same-sex marriages and whether or not to ordain pastors who are in same-sex marriages. But this debate should be understood as part of the Church's ongoing struggle over how to apply ancient morality to modern life. Acts 15 shows us how the early Church got through its first moral crisis, and it provides us guidance on how Christians can come together, debate, compromise, and maintain unity in diversity.

When people are passionate about something, they can't stop talking about it. If we are passionate about the service work we do for God by helping our neighbors in the community, we WILL talk about it to others. That's called evangelism.
We were created for a purpose... To love and serve our God and neighbor. As we grow in our faith, we will feel compelled to serve people... to feed the hungry, visit the suffering, and heal the broken.
We were created for a purpose... To love and serve our God and neighbor. The most important way we fulfill that purpose is through public worship in the community of faith. Worship leads to Christian Fellowship, which is the second way we serve our God and neighbor. A healthy church is a special type of community. A community of faith helps people grow in their discipleship... not just learning right from wrong, but acquiring the strength to do the right thing no matter the cost.
