Cease Fire is an obscure 3D war film made in 1953, filmed in Korea around the time of the real-life cease-fire in July '53. The cast is made up of serving soldiers undertaking a routine patrol. Often cited as one the the best war movies from that golden age of 1950s British cinema. Directed by Charles Frend, based on Nicholas Monsarrat's book and starring Jack Hawkins, Donald Sinden, and Denholm Elliot, the film documents the wartime service of a Royal Navy corvette and her crew during the battle of the Atlantic. This week sees the release of 'The Great Escaper' the latest Micheal Caine film. The 90-year-old 2 time Oscar winner is back, playing Bernie Jordan. The film tells the fictionalised true story of a veteran of the Normandy landings who under took a solo trip to the 70th D-day anniversary commemorations. His trip became worldwide news and saw Jordan dubbed 'The Great Escaper'. The film co-stars the late Glenda Jackson and includes an excellent turn from John Standing. The film explores themes of reflection and survivor guilt, catch it in cinemas on 6th October.

This week we dug into the archives and found a very rare British war film. 1987s 'Silent Heroes' appears to be the first British attempt at creating a film about the Falklands War, filmed for just £90,000. U-571 directed by Johnathan Mostow was surrounded by controversy when it was released in the summer of 2000. The film tells the fictional story of an American submarine crew who are tasked with capturing an Enigma machine from a damaged German U-boat. We continue Merc Month 2 with another Cannon Films classic - 1988's 'Mercenary Fighters'. Starring Peter Fonda, as a no-nonsense mercenary leader, Ron O'Neal as an experienced helicopter pilot and Reb Brown as a hard fighting merc that has a change of heart. Directed by Riki Shelach Nissimoff the film follows an ensemble mercenary team tasked with forcing local people from their homes to make way for a new hydroelectric dam.
This week Merc Month 2 continues with 1971's 'Universal Soldier'. Starring George Lazenby as Ryker, a mercenary turned weapons consultant, as he prepares to embark on a new mission after a few years out of the game but as the mission approaches he has a miraculous change of heart which sees Ryker submerge himself in London's counterculture scene.
Directed by Cy Endfield, of 'Zulu' fame, this independent film is truly one of the most bizarre pieces of cinema we have covered on the show. Strap in for a wild ride that features machine guns, Wipmy burger bars arms dealers & frisbees!

Directed by Aaron Norris 'Platoon Leader' features the skilled cinematography of Arthur Wooster and a strong cast of TV actors while Micheal Dudikoff plays the lead, LT. Directed by Brian G. Hutton and starring an incredible cast including Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Mary Ure, Ingrid Pitt, Donald Houston, Peter Barkworth, Robert Beatty, Anton Diffring and Derren Nesbitt. The film follows the twists and turns of an epic SOE mission to uncover a mole through one of the most rip-roaring commando missions ever to grace the silver screen.
We're pleased to be joined by award winning playwright and filmmaker Lance Nielsen. Lance was the driving force behind Pegasus Bridge, a film about Operation Coup De Main/Deadstick during D-Day. Sadly, the funding for Lance's ambitious film didn't materialise and the Covid-19 Pandemic halted production. Thankfully, Lance has now published the film's screenplay along with an introduction which tells the story of his attempts to produce the film and detailed production notes which explain how the film would have been produced originally. In this special episode Lance tells us all about the impetus for the film, the how he spearheaded production, spoke to surviving veterans and crafted an engaging and historically accurate script for the film.
We have said many times that we would love to see a film made about the daring operation to capture Pegasus Bridge and having read Lance's beautifully crafted and thoroughly researched screenplay we hope he gets the chance again in the future to make Pegasus Bridge. This week we cover our first Disney film with 1971's Bedknobs and Broomsticks. The late Angela Lansbury stars in this fantasy-war film set in the August of 1940. Three cockney evacuees are transported into a world of magic by Egalentine Price, an apprentice witch who wants to use her magic to aid the war effort.

We welcome back Historian Peter Caddick-Adams back to show to cover 1969s 'The Bridge at Remagen' that pits George Segal against Robert Vaughn as they battle for the bridge! Directed by John Guillermin and produced by David L. Wolper, the production of the film is just as eventful as the action on screen as the filming was interrupted by the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968.
A war movie in the vein of Kelly's Heroes and other late 60s American war films, Bridge at Remagen goes against the gun-ho war films of the 50s and shows 1945 in a far more accurate way. Both commanders are at breaking point as well as the men below them. Peter also brings his extensive knowledge of the battle to the show and even regales us with Bridge Demolition tips from his time in the British Army!

This week in a change of pace Fighting On Film moves into new territory discussing a documentary film for the first time. We were very pleased to be joined by historian, producer and historical consultant Steve Darlow who helped make Lancaster, the new documentary about the Lancaster bomber and the men who flew them during the war. The documentary comes from the team who produced 2018's Spitfire and brings together candid interviews with veterans, phenomenal aerial photography and stunning contemporary footage to tell the story of the bomber in a very human and engaging way. We spoke to Steve about his role in the documentary, bringing together the veterans interviewed in the film and the challenges of telling the Lancaster and bomber command's story in just 110 minutes.

Pull on your respirators, load your MAC-10s and join us for Who Dares Wins (1982). An 80s British Cold War action movie starring Lewis Collins, Judy Davis, Richard Widmark and Edward Woodward. An undercover SAS officer is all that stands between a terrorist group and the murder of high-ranking hostages. Directed by Ian Sharp and produced by Euan Lloyd of Wild Geese and Sea Wolves fame, Who Dares Wins takes inspiration from the SAS' 1980 Iranian Embassy Assault and boasted at the time to be as close to the real thing as possible. While the film has arguably become a cult classic its tone shifts throughout the film ranging from Cold War thriller to Bond-like romp to all all out action movie.

This week we examine The Eight Hundred a recent Chinese spectacular which tackles the the defence of Sihang Warehouse, during the battle of Shanghai in 1937. Directed by Guan Hu and starring Huang Zhizhong, Oho Ou, Jiang Wu, Zhang Yi, Wang Qianyuan, Du Chun, Vision Wei, Li Chen, Yu Haoming, Tang Yixin, and Zheng Kai. While their are strong performances they're largely lost in the edit and the film's saving grace is its spectacle. While fascinating to see a film about an intriguing battle of the Second Sino-Japanese War, which is often forgotten in the West, the film looses cohesion, likely due to Chinese government interference, and is slightly marred by latent propaganda which is woven into the story of a battle which predates the Chinese Communist Party's rise to power.

In 1989 at the height of a flurry of Vietnam War films an interesting new take on the sub-genre came in the form of 84 Charlie MoPic, which used a found footage, first person technique to follow a fateful long range reconnaissance patrol (LRRP). Written and directed by a Vietnam veteran Patrick Sheane Duncan, it has a small but capable cast including Jonathan Emerson, Nicholas Cascone, Jason Tomlins, Christopher Burgard, Glenn Morshower, Richard Brooks and Byron Thames.

Matt wrote a book about the PIAT, or Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank, in 2020 and continues to research its history. One of the most interesting aspects of the PIAT is its unique cultural history, having been portrayed in a plethora of films spanning over 70 years. Most famously it was heralded, literally, when Anthony Hopkins as Lt. Colonel Frost in A Bridge Too Far shouted 'BRING UP THE PIAT!' A line which has become iconic. In the last of this months Market Garden specials we bring you a very special look at an amateur feature from the 1960s.
'Baskeyfield VC' tells the incredible story of the actions of the famous John Baskeyfield who was the only Stoke born recipient of the Victoria Cross during the Second World War. Produced, written and directed by Bill Townley over 3 years his film is a hidden gem within the war movie genre. From showing the exploits of Lonsdale force dug in around Oosterbeek Church to Baskeyfield's VC action itself the film is a feat of what a driven and passionate film maker can achieve on a micro-budget!
The film was lovingly restored by Ray Johnson of the Staffordshire Film Archive, we talk to Ray about this process during the episode.

We were lucky enough to see an advanced screener of J.P Watt's 'The War Below' to bring you our exclusive review of his debut feature!
The film tells the story of a small team of civilian sewer engineers who are plucked from their jobs and tasked with helping dig mines underneath German strongpoints on the western front in the First World War by the legendary 'Hellfire Jack'.
This Anglo-American production punches above its budget to deliver tense tunnel sequences and brutal depictions of tunnel warfare.

We continue Mercenary Month with a classic, 'Dark of the Sun'. Jack Cardiff's 1968 action movie that follows a band of Congolese commandos attempting to retrieve a huge diamond haul before the Simbas arrive. An artistic but visceral film staring Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux, Jim Brown, Peter Carsten and Kenneth More. Skilfully shot, lots of impressive action and some good performances combine to create a compelling film.
