Most of my "hobby time" has been focused on small-scale machines lately. Between weather woes and overall fun, I've found these tiny (tiny) trucks to be a fun distraction from the day-to-day grind.
Among my growing collection of 1/18, 1/24, 1/30, and 1/64 radio-controlled vehicles, one platform stands out from the crowd: Axial's SCX30. Introduced in late 2025, this 1/30-scale micro crawler is amazingly fun to drive right out of the box, and it offers a new world of customization and upgrade options for hobbyists who are looking to improve its performance.

3D printing and the R/C hobby are an incredibly powerful duo. Whether you want to create your own designs for tools, parts, and storage, or you simply want to download neat items to make your R/C experience even better, 3D printing allows you to do just that.
While I've been involved in both for several years, it wasn't until late last year that I became re-inspired by 3D printing. Hello again! I'm back in my mobile recording studio to record another episode of The RC Newb Podcast. A lot has happened since episode 74; Axialfest Badlands 2022 came and went (and was awesome), Traxxas released several fun vehicles in various sizes, Element RC dropped a new entry-level crawler, and Carisma showcased its scale detail chops with a few new releases.

When your dream car (or truck) is available in 1/10-scale, it's hard to pass up the opportunity to park one in your R/C garage. As soon as Traxxas announced its TRX-4 2021 Ford Bronco, I knew I needed that rig in my life.

I've been exploring some new R/C models over the past year, including the Traxxas TRX-4 2021 Ford Broco, the Element RC Knightrunner, the Element RC Gatekeeper (RTR), ROCHobby's Katana V2, the Axial SCX24 Jeep JT Gladiator, and a few others.Traxxas has a new 1/8-scale basher; Sledge.Axial is teasing a new (small-scale) release on 3/31/22.
It's a new year, and what better way to celebrate than by talking about the R/C hobby? I've mentioned CarryAll RC and their lineup of crawling and trail-focused backpacks in the past, so I figured it was time to give an overview of their X-TRA 3 Combo Backpack.
In addition to that, I want to find out what your hobby plans are for this new year. Are you a new hobbyist that's just getting started, or a seasoned pro who's planning to go big?
I've got my own plans for my hobby time and most of them focus on upgrading and massaging my current lineup of machines. Of course, I'm not ruling out a new vehicle or two...should the opportunity present itself.

In this episode of the podcast, I'm focusing on two smaller-scale R/C vehicles that I'm currently reviewing. The first is the RGT Adventurer V2 which was provided by the folks at Banggood. This 1/24-scale crawler has been a fun addition to my growing fleet of small crawlers and can hold its own against other heavyweights in this category.
The second vehicle that I'll talk about is the XC324 Manga Spirit from Xotik. This R/C car looks like the popular Mini 4WD from Tamiya but has the added ability to be driven just about anywhere. From the track to your kitchen floor, this car has provided for some much-needed breaks during my current work-from-home scenario.
Lastly, I wanted to give you a preview of what's currently on my workbench...an airplane. I've been helping two of my sons build an R/C airplane as part of a Boy Scouts merit badge, and it's provided some unique learning opportunities for us all.

It's not often that I get to chat with folks in the film industry, so when the opportunity arose to chat with the director (Dave Hill) and producer (Trenton Waterson) of the upcoming film, Flying Cars, I knew it was something I couldn't pass up. Everyone should build a kit. If you haven't experienced building a radio-controlled machine from the ground up, you should add that to your hobby to-do list.

This hobby truly has something for everyone. I've found myself spending more time at my workbench on a variety of tune-ups and project than I have actually wheeling an R/C vehicle, but I'll take the calming effects of a hex driver any day of the week. Between upgrading the handling aspects of the Carisma Scale Adventure Lynx to updating the look of my Traxxas TRX-4 Sport, I've had a variety of vehicles up on jacks, including a challenging small-scale build.

Time for a quiz! What's the most important part of your R/C vehicle? While that question can have multiple answers, I'm in the camp who believe tires have a major hand in how a vehicle performs and handles. Chatting about the hobby never gets old. When an on-road R/C question came my way, I had one person in mind to help provide some information. Josh Howard, my first guest on the podcast, was eager to share his on-road racing knowledge and bring me up to speed on what he's been up to throughout the past two years.
It was a great catch-up chat and it sounds like Josh has some fun and challenging plans in store for some of his radio-controlled vehicles.
This episode of the podcast features a guest that I've known online for quite a while and have been a big fan of his photography work and approach to the hobby. 2017 has been a banner year for the "scale R/C" scene. With new models being introduced from Redcat Racing, HPI, Traxxas, and Carisma Scale Adventure, there are more rigs to choose from than ever before. As the FPV craze sweeps the aircraft side of the radio-control hobby, it hasn’t hit full stride when it comes to R/C cars and trucks. Taking a break from writing and video production, I sat down in the studio to share my thoughts on Pro-Line’s Ambush 4x4, small-scale trail rig. After driving this rig for a while, and with my written review getting wrapped up, I felt an audio overview of this machine was due.

If there's one thing that I enjoy in this hobby more than the vehicles, it's the people and the communities that tie it all together. I had the great pleasure of chatting about the R/C hobby with an individual who I have been following the work of for quite some time. Trevor Rushford, a man who is as passionate about the radio-controlled hobby as anyone that I've met, has a number of events on his plate. From his own perspective, hear what drew him to these vehicles at the age of 14, what has kept him involved (in one way or another) since that time, and what he enjoys the most about building not only the machines, but communities of R/C enthusiasts.

I have long felt that one of the greatest tech advancements that has come along in the last 2+ years has been 3D printing. Whatever you can dream up, draw up, or create a concept of, you can build a tangible model of that item, or create parts and pieces to improve a ready-made product. The possibilities are truly endless. Now, take that power of creation and marry it to a hobby that thrives on ingenuity and creativity and you have an intersection between a technology and past-time that is a perfect fit. With three years of the R/C hobby under my belt, I've seen more than a few changes and shifts in what is popular and what is gaining momentum. In this latest RC Newb Podcast episode, I give my take on where I see the hobby going this year, as well as sharing some of my newest upgrades and updates.
Ok, the title may be a little misleading. I hadn't caught up with Tim Smith for a while and in that time, he's been to a few places, done some stuff, and has seen a few things. After months of planning, scheming, and rescheduling, I was finally able to record a podcast with Josh Howard. We had a few items to talk about, starting with the closing of his local R/C racetrack and we rounded things out with a chat about ways to achieve a matte finish on a Lexan body (without risking scrapes and scratches). It's been a while, but I wanted to give some updates on a few things that will be coming up on the site. I'm (again) thrilled to welcome Josh Howard as a contributor to the blog and hope you've been enjoying his take on RC racing.

We're back with another episode, but nothing much has changed. No intro music, no r/c truck and more ideas than I know what to do with. So what does a person do when their radio-controlled vehicle is in the shop? They come up with a list of upgrades and hop-ups!
Bodies - This is an easy visual enhancement. You can really make the vehicle your own with a custom body. Springs and Shocks - A simple and relatively low-cost performance upgrade for bashing or racing. Tires & Wheels - Performance meets visual appeal. If you're thinking about hitting the track, keep an eye on what your competitors are running. Undertrays and Overtrays - Protect your electronics and servos from battle damage by bolting on an added shield. Sway bars and other chassis upgrades - Dial in your performance and handling whether you're bashing or racing. Motor and Electronic Speed Control (ESC) - The ultimate performance boost. These will cost the most money, but you'll get the biggest return in the form of speed. Radios, servos, and receivers - With a little ingenuity (and a lot of money) you can rebuild your entire vehicle. It's been done.
