Just some of the points raised during this season finale are:
- Syd is PASSIONATE about disrupting and improving the current education system. She knows many other educators share her thoughts, and identifies that we need to collaborate and pull in the same direction, to cause impact through a movement and create change together.
- Syd talks about the importance of flexibility. Before the pandemic, her business was all face to face. As with many businesses at the time, it ground to a halt overnight. Her flexibility allowed her to adapt, and create an online model which works brilliantly.
- When you work for yourself, you don't need to be bound by typical working hours. Syd often works into the wee small hours, because she can be productive and effective at that time. It's important to identify what working practices work best for you, and embrace them.

- Siobhan LOVES working for herself as a tutor. When she worked in a traditional schooling environment, her "to do" list would keep her awake at night! She always felt overstretched in school, but now she's got time to offer her students much more quality support.
- Siobhan is currently tutoring one to one, but has recently tested out a group teaching programme in KS2 Maths, which was successful. She'll be filtering this model into her business over time.
- Siobhan's advice to people starting in their education business, is to "keep going and be consistent", as there's always another client "just around the corner". Consistency is also absolutely key in social media marketing. It CAN be tough, but a positive mindset will get you through the testing times.

- Julie's used to working in colleges, with her day starting at 9am and finishing at 4pm. Since starting her tutoring business, she's had a big shift in mindset. Initially she used to stick to those rigid times, but now allows herself more flexibility in hours, and loves it.
- Julie encourages risk taking in art, when the piece isn't being assessed for exams. Risks allow creativity to grow and can lead to amazing things. If a risk doesn't pay off, she encourages the student to reflect and develop.
- Julie encourages her students to use many different tools to express their artistic ideas in the most relevant way. The finished piece may be a painting, a photograph, a video, just about anything!

Chloe has ADHD, and when she was at school, the only subjects that held her interest were languages. This is a great chat, where you'll hear Chloe talk about how she manages her ADHD both personally and whilst teaching her students. Syd also has somewhat of a revelation during the conversation. - Regardless of how tired she's feeling because of a lack of quality sleep, Chloe is ALWAYS energetic and positive with her students: Energy breeds energy!
- Computer games aren't always bad for you! Chloe was driven by Assassin's Creed to start her languages journey, go to Uni, and start her tutoring business! ๐ฎ
- Tutors don't need to know EVERYTHING! Students questions highlight knowledge gaps, which gives the opportunity to go back and revise that content. Part of being a teacher is ALWAYS being a learner.

- The private education model aligns with Gemma's values much closer than traditional schooling. She's been told by Headteachers of the past to ignore students who need emotional support, and concentrate her effort on pushing the ones who are doing well academically.

- Taking constructive criticism positively is really important, and your action as a result will make you better.

Yvonne was ahead of the curve, and has been offering online tutorial for the past 15 years! She offered both online and face to face, until a move to North Wales in 2016, meant it made practical sense to go totally online.
This is a really interesting chat between two well respected educators, with many take away points, including:
- When families are picking a Home Ed Tutor, they'll always go for one they can TRUST, which grows quickly through referrals from other home ed families.
- Yvonne talks about the importance of home educated kids having time to socialise. She gives her group classes time to chat before the lesson begins, when her camera and mic are turned off.
- Teaching in subjects you're passionate about really helps keep material fresh. Yvonne's a historian, and currently running courses in Medieval and Tudor history, and as well as being a MASSIVE "Tolkien geek", she's teaching her first summer school on his works.
- Collaboration is "exciting". Yvonne often works with other Educators and always learns and builds her skillset during these times, and sometimes she'll have access to new resources she may otherwise not have access to.

S02E07 A day in the life of A Maths & Finance Educator with Helen Westwood.
Welcome to Season 2 of the UK Educators Community Podcast, where you'll get a sneak peek into Educator's diaries, as Syd asks her guests to run through one of their typical days. On this episode, you'll meet Helen Westwood.
After completing her degree, Helen worked in corporate as a Tax Consultant. After a couple of years, (and a meeting with one of her old teachers), Helen was offered a job on the graduate teacher programme at the school she once studied at. She's now spent several years leading finance courses for post-16 year olds.
As well as her work with the school, Helen runs her own private tutoring in Maths and Finance. She's VERY BUSY and booked up until 2025!!
This is an engaging chat, with many key points, including:
- Some consider online booking tools, such as Calendly to be a little impersonal. When used well, and at the end of the process they are excellent. You have already built rapport with the client and simply send them a link, where they can book a formal appointment.
- Time management is essential when you have other commitments. Helen works in large "chunks" of time, so she's always fully present when with family, or students (even if it IS on a Friday night at 8pm!)
- Helen's soon to be offering very early tutoring sessions. Some families will take their children to swimming lessons, horse riding lessons, etc before school, so early morning pre-school run lessons are soon to be trialled.
- As mentioned, Helen's booked up until 2025. Every few months, she checks in with her advance bookings to ensure they're still interested.

Julia came to teaching, after becoming disillusioned with a high powered career in the city as a stocks trader. She spend almost 10 years working in Primary schools, and doing some private tutoring on the side, before phasing out traditional schooling and concentrating on her tutoring business full time.
It's a great chat, with many takeaway points, including:
- Your career needs to align with your personal values. The more mature you become, the clearer this is and more important it becomes.
- The importance to adapt in business can't be underplayed. For example, any tutoring businesses who didn't go online in 2020 would have had a hard time surviving. Whereas the ones who embraced the change get a chance to thrive.
- Once you've been tutoring for a long while, preparing for each session isn't always needed. Often students will speak about their concerns and struggles, and the sessions will go in different directions anyway. It's all about being flexible with your plans.

- Setting up and running you own business is stressful, but because you're in control of all elements it's a different kind of stress, to when you're employed and have no control at all.

Gemma launched "Spalding's School of Science" in June 2019. Unlike many of the educators Syd's spoken to on these podcasts, Gemma hasn't ever worked in a traditional schooling environment. You'll hear a great conversation between two educators, who's values really align, but their approaches and businesses are quite different. Here are some useful messages that came out of today's chat:
- A focus on your own well-being is of massive importance to your business. Always ensure you have "me time" in every day, (even if it's just an hour of book reading before bed).
- The UK science curriculum is pretty dull, more interesting subjects and approaches need to be taken to really inspire learning.
- In order to scale up your business, it's so important to delegate work to trusted team members and spend time on growth plans, marketing and sales.

Michelle teaches Biology to undergraduates at The Open University as well as working as a private tutor. Michelle left her teaching training course after just two months, thinking that she wasnโt cut out to be a teacher. Ten years later she is glad she left her course but that she didnโt give up on teaching.

There are many key take away points from the conversation, including:
- If you're training to be a teacher in a traditional environment and feel you're "not right" for the role, consider private tutoring. The freedom the model provides may reinvigorate your passion for educating
- Social media marketing works best when there's lots of ENGAGEMENT. If you reply and spark conversations on your feed, your posts will be seen by more people.
- Whilst social media is a powerful and FREE way of marketing your tutoring services, leafleting can also still provide a fantastic ROI. Ensure your designs aren't date specific so they can be used as a long term strategy. Consider where you're placing them : Libraries, community centres, schools and through letterboxes are great places to start.

- He plans and structures his days in advance, always allowing time for self reflection.
- He always has a to do list, but never feels guilty if he strays from it to do something enjoyable, as long as everything on there is finished at the end of the day.
- There are 2 types of people: "Onions" stay in a job for MANY years and build up layers of knowledge about their industry and business, whilst "Rockets" move quickly upwards between jobs and industries. The most solid businesses have both types of people in them, and it's important for the people manager to understand who is who, and what they bring to the business.

- Engagement is key - to help your posts gain a larger audience, ensure the content is interactive, and people engage. When they comment, reply to their comments to help stimulate a further conversation. This will help your post be seen by more of your followers and friends.
- The default "LIKE" button on Facebook doesn't count as interaction any longer. To work the algorithms in your favour, aim to have your followers use the other emoji buttons, and engage with your content.
- Understand why people are using the platforms they're using, and cater your material accordingly to connect with them. As a general rule, people use Facebook to communicate with friends and family, whereas Instagram is used for escapism and positivity, where as people on Twitter are there for news and topical conversation.

12: Money Mindset with Rae Richards - Understanding the Archetypes to charge your value

Rae specialises in coaching women on their money mindset, which helps to grow their businesses. Her work often starts with identifying her client's archetype. Whilst Rae's work is generally with women, but her Money Archetypes assessment works the same for all genders. This is a really insightful chat, especially if your dominant archetype is a "nurturer", as is the case with many teachers and tutors.
There are many takeaways from this episode, including:
- When deciding on pricing for your services, look at the market extremes (the lowest & highest prices currently being offered), and decide where you fit in, based on specialty, experience and your USP. Think of a number, then lift it to the point where it feels "a little uncomfortable" to say, and that's what you charge!
- Once you know and understand your personality type, you're able to quickly identify which other personality types will be attracted to your business. Once you know this, you no longer need to market to the people who won't buy your services.
- To grow more profitable businesses, nurturers need to develop a relationship with money that becomes personal, and reposition their thinking. For example, money can be used to buy resources for students, which helps you to nurture them. Earning more money, means you can rest more often... and you need rest to effectively nurture others.

- If you don't succeed, rather than class it as a failure and ask yourself why you failed, reframe the question and ask yourself what lessons you can learn from the outcome, how those lessons can be used to avoiding the same outcome again, and then use these lessons to teach other people.
- Emotional maturity and resilience is of massive importance when coaching. Being too emotional leads you to offer too much assistance, which stops people from learning lessons themselves. Being too detached leads to a lack of connection with people. It's all about balance.

There are some priceless actionable tips on this show surrounding the interview process, including:
- When searching for new contractors, Facebook Jobs works well. Syd recently paid ยฃ10 for an advert, and got over 100 applicants!
- When receiving so many applicants, the first step of filtration can be brutal. For example; instruct all applicants to give their email a particular title. Anyone who doesn't goes straight to trash! This may sound harsh, but it will save you time interviewing people who aren't able to follow instructions, and don't have an eye for detail.
