In today’s episode of Small-Time Leaders, our host Michael shares with us how Josh Branson reminded him to observe barriers as a blessing. As we pursue our passion and goals, we often run into obstacles that unfortunately put us down, or even worse, push us into giving up. Josh is the leading example of converting barriers into blessings and staying committed to the end goal, no matter of the nay-sayers that surround us or to life hurdles.

We also wanted to thank our August guest speakers, Micah Andrews, and Phillip Van Hooser. Micah reminded us the importance of Being Real, Authentic and Genuine and the impact we make on people’s lives when we Stand Up For Them. Phillip walked us through the long-term impact of Learning Self-Accountability and how Acknowledging Others Higher Power bring more successes for everyone.

Micah was a student pastor at Metropolitan Church in Birmingham for 13 years before coming to The Foundry Ministries in 2008, where he has served as volunteer coordinator, senior director of men’s programs, and assistant executive director. He believes his current position as CEO affords him the responsibility of connecting the dots—people to the services the ministry offers, partners to opportunities for making an eternal impact, and residents to a loving and compassionate Heavenly Father. “My role is to keep our ministry laser-focused on what the Lord has called us to do—restore hope and rebuild lives,” he says.

In today’s episode of Small-Time Leaders, Micah shares with us a life lesson learned from Dr. Culpepper. When fresh out of college he started working as a volunteer in a ministry. There he was able to see his leader look out for him, go out of the way to keep him in the current position while a budget cut. Not only that, but Micah was able to move to a better position, leading him to learn leadership and management skills and become a CEO of a ministry today.

He received a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Lee University and a Master in Public Administration degree from The University of Alabama at Birmingham, building a solid foundation for his leadership role in all areas of the ministry. “We want to continue to be the place where broken and devastated people come to find spiritual healing and to rebuild the pieces of their lives,” Micah says. “To do so we are focused on investing in our staff to ensure every person who walks through our doors gets the highest quality of care possible, and in our programs so when those outside of The Foundry think of a place that can help those in need, they think of us.”

When asked how ministry friends and partners can help The Foundry achieve these goals he says, “I would ask our donors to ask God what it is He wants to do through them and then simply respond. I am depending on Him to speak to our donors to help us do what He has called us to do.

Dr. Emmett Cooper is the creator of the HoneyWord Bible and the HoneyWord Learning Method currently being used around the world. The HoneyWord Learning Method is a visual recognition system that engages both sides of the brain to ingrain concepts that last a lifetime. As Dr. Emmett likes to say, “ We help God’s Word click and stick in the childlike hearts! ’The HoneyWord Bible is a Bible, filled with his fantastic memory pictures and stories.

In today’s episode of Small-Time Leaders, Dr. Emmett Cooper talks about the nature of total commitment. Dr. Cooper says that people go through three stages before they commit. First, they lie to themselves to feel better, secondly, they either quit or move forward and the final they move into full commitment.

With their mission being “to make it easier for K-6 children to understand and apply Biblical truths in their lives”, The HoneyWord organization fulfills this goal by equipping teachers and parents to apply the fun and easy HoneyWord system at home, in a classroom, or online.

The HoneyWord Way of Learning revolutionary approach has been field-tested and perfected through over 20 years in churches, Christian schools, camps, home-schooling groups, and club programs throughout the United States—as well as 12 foreign countries.

In today’s episode of Small-Time Leaders, Jenn Swanson talks about one of her leaders while working on the ICU unit in Canada. Martha, the head nurse, was looking to apply major changes in the hospital to improve productivity and she decided to ask every stakeholder of the staff on their opinion. Jenn found that a little strange at first but the more she thought of it, the more she loved the idea of creating a collaborative workplace. You might be surprised and find out that your staff has the next best breakthrough idea for the company, but the only way to find that out is to ask your stakeholders.

Known to be a "pathologically positive" person, Jenn has been educating, encouraging, and empowering others to succeed for more than 25 years. In honor of Father’s day, I wanted to tell you about a prominent “small-time leader” in life, my daddy, Odus Tate. Daddy modeled the qualities of being patient, doing good work, and, most importantly, serving others selflessly.

Looking back and I now better understand and appreciate his values and approach to working and living. I see now how my father’s amazing parenting and guidance helped me find my path to a successful career and a happy life. Daddy was always using his carpentry skills to help struggling people feel more secure and safe in life. Today I apply my writing and coaching to help people who are grappling with direction and change find their peaceful and life-giving career.

This father’s day, intentionally create a moment with your father to share some memories and lessons you’ve learned from him and let him tell you a tale or two as well. Nothing says I appreciate you more than a listening ear.

Gary teaches us how a small preparation such as having a pen handy at any time takes you far in life. Those who have a pen handy, write notes during a meeting, and markdown important details are to be very successful at their job. It is not just the pen he says but others see you as more professional and well put together as well.
