In our latest podcast episode, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Drea Hemmer, the dynamic owner of Lunatic Fringe Salon in Boise and the insightful author of “Intelligent Huddles.” Drea is not just a successful business owner; she is a seasoned communication and leadership coach with a wealth of knowledge to share.
From a small town in Utah to owning a high-end salon in Boise, Drea’s journey is a testament to the power of vision, resilience, and effective leadership. Her story is filled with valuable lessons for entrepreneurs at any stage of their journey.
One of the key takeaways from our conversation was the importance of self-awareness in leadership. Drea emphasized that the foundation of any beneficial change in life is awareness. This is not just about understanding your strengths and weaknesses but also about being mindful of your emotions and how they affect your decisions and interactions with your team.
Drea also shared her insights on building a strong team culture. At Lunatic Fringe, the culture is built on five core values: team, discipline, excellence, education, and relationships. These values are not just words on a wall; they are lived and breathed by every team member. This strong cultural foundation has helped Lunatic Fringe maintain low turnover rates and high employee engagement, even in an industry known for its high turnover.
Communication was another major theme of our discussion. Drea is a firm believer in the power of daily huddles. These short, focused meetings help keep everyone aligned, celebrate victories, and address any challenges in real time. They are a cornerstone of the salon’s success and a practice that Drea has detailed in her book, “Intelligent Huddles.”
We also delved into the topic of fear, particularly the fear that comes with starting and running a business. Drea’s approach to fear is both practical and empowering. She encourages leaders to acknowledge their fears, understand their sources, and develop strategies to overcome them. This proactive approach helps transform fear from a paralyzing force into a motivating factor.
Whether you’re a new business owner, an aspiring entrepreneur, or a seasoned leader, this episode is packed with actionable insights that can help you lead more effectively, communicate more clearly, and build a stronger, more cohesive team.
Tune in to hear the full conversation and gain more wisdom from Drea Hemmer. You won’t want to miss it!

I had a chance to sit down with my friend Tyler Freeman, co-owner of Alchemist Coffee! Alchemist is one of the fastest-growing coffee companies in the state. From my seat, it seemed like one day there were no Alchemist’s and then, they were everywhere I turned.
Tyler worked in the coffee industry before Alchemist and had a front-row seat working for another coffee company with massive growth. Dutch Bros. Tyler needed to switch gears as the pandemic was about to hit in early 2020. He traveled a little and started his own snow shack company.
But it came back to coffee. He and his partner Chris started up in 2021 and they opened 3 shops in one year. They have their product in 312 Wal-Marts and have their eyes on a few more locations here in the valley.
Thank you Tyler for coming on and sharing your story with us!

On this episode I have my good friend, Caleb Randall on the show. Caleb and his wife Logan bought Guru Donuts almost a year ago and we talk about what their first year has been like. Here were the questions I threw at him:
Tell me about guru donuts
Tell me about the decision to buy this specific business. Walk me through those conversations
What did you do before guru?
What skills were you bringing to your new role?
What was the process like going through the purchase? Any advice for those buying businesses
What was your biggest fear entering this chapter?
How has your first year been?
Biggest surprise?
What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
How difficult has it been to find employees?
What are you doing to build culture?

I had the opportunity to sit down and spend a full hour with my new friend Shawnda Huffman. Shawnda is the Founder/CEO of Tuuti an all-women creative marketing agency here in Boise.
We covered a lot of ground during our time together. Shawnda started in radio and built a very successful 20+ year career in that industry. Hearing what she learned and how she grew as a professional and a human during that time was very inspirational.
After she sunset that portion of her professional life, Shawda was hired to work for Microbe Formulas. During her short period of time there, she helped grow it from a $5m company to $50m. She did such a great job, that they sold the company and she was out of work. If you are familiar with the slogan, “Yay I pooped today!”, you can thank Shawnda.
She had wanted to start a creative agency for years. This loud voice named Fear, kept getting in her way. After Microbe, the urge to start became louder than the fear and Tuuti was born. In a short period of time, she has built a great agency, with a culture that we all wish we had when we go to work. It’s professional, joyful, hard-working, and loving. You can feel all of that when she describes going into the office and doing the work.
Thank you so much Shawnda for coming in and sharing your story with me!

This episode spotlights my new friend Tanner Martty. Tanner and I met recently when he stopped by my office to see if he could help me and my business. We struck up a conversation and after learning more about him, I realized we needed to tell his story.
Tanner has run multiple businesses after cutting his teeth in the cutthroat world of medical software sales. After working his sales muscle, he turned to literal muscles and entered the performance and health industry.
It’s here where he put on his entrepreneurial hat and really took off when he opened his gym. This business flourished under his leadership and was humming along at an aggressive pace. Then the world shut down because of Covid and fewer industries were hit harder than his.
He picked up his family and moved to Idaho where he is starting a new adventure in the publishing space. Thank you so much for coming on Tanner and sharing your story with us!

I had the opportunity to sit down with President Gordon Jones. He is the President of the College of Western Idaho. Gordon brought so much to the Podcast including experiences from working with Gillette, earning an MBA from Stanford to starting an entrepreneurial program at Harvard. We had a wonderful conversation that spanned his entire career. My questions were:
What do you do today?
What set you on that path?
What was your experience when working for Fortune 500 companies?
What did you like about it? What did you wish you could change?
What did you do at Harvard? What was it like building out that program? What were you teaching?
How has the business world changed in the past 20 years?
What are we getting right? What do we still need to work on?
How did you get to CWI?
How are you preparing students to enter the workforce?
How can local businesses collaborate to support access to affordable education?
In this difficult labor market, how is CWI preparing our future workers?
What does education look like in the future if community colleges?
What do you see as the shift from standard bachelor degrees to alternative education sources?

On this episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Alison Patt, President of Thomas Cuisine. We cover alot of really important ground on the topics of communication, sales, leadership and more. Below was the roadmap that I laid out for us. Thank you Alison for coming on the show!
Where are you from and how did you get to Idaho?
What do you do today?
Let’s go all the way back. What was the first job you had that led you down the path you’re currently on.?
Let’s talk about leadership. How do you come into a role like the one you have, and lead? How do you get some quick wins? How do you earn early trust?
You offer a product that, I think is very very important. Healthy food. It comes at a significant cost. Tell me about your sales process. Salespeople in these situations are told to “sell value”. How do you do that?
Walk me through your thought process when it comes to chasing goals. How do you set them? How to you plan to achieve them? How do assess what is working, what isn’t, and what just needs more time?
How can you identify early if they are going to be a good fit or not?
Let’s talk communication. How do you effectively communicate in a company of your size. How do you know that you are hearing the real issues from the field and that those in the field, are being heard?
What are the challenges with working in a family business?
My wife owns a small business in the medical field and I have watched her have to overcome certain things because she is a woman. Have there been challenges for you this way? What would you say to a promising young female who wants to hold a position like yours? Would your advice be any different if it was a young promising male?

I had the pleasure of having Connie Miller back on the show. Connie came on 3 years ago when she was the CEO of ICON Credit Union (now Horizon Credit Union). I respect Connie so much. She lives her life with integrity, transparency, kindness and service. Our first conversation was heavy on leadership strageties and professional ownership. I would encourage you to revisit it.
Connie recently retired (Congratulations!). We thought it would be a great topic to discuss as we felt it isn’t discussed enough. Retirement can be one of the toughest transitions you will make and if you aren’t prepared it can be a bumpy road.
She talks about her preparation for getting to retirement, the conversations she had at home with her husband, and then walks us through what that transition has been like.
Thank you Connie for coming and discussing a topic that deserves more attention.

What was your original plan to open a restaurant?
What did you do when you couldn’t get funding?
How important were mentors to your development? How did you find them? How did you use them?
How important was that time when you were catering and food trucking? What did that time allow you to do when it came to learning the business/bettering your craft/marketing/etc?
Talk to me about the small business culture here in Boise

This week I have my good friend Jacob Norby on the pod. Jacob is one of my favorite humans and you will hear why. Jacob has many professional accomplishments under his belt. He built and grew a mortgage brokerage years ago. Through that process, he learned that he wasn’t answering the call his soul was desperately screaming at him to answer. He was unfulfilled and wasn’t filling his cup with the right elixir. He was filling it with what others were telling him to fill it with.
Since closing those doors, Jacob dove headfirst into the icy waters of the proverbial deep end and answered that call. He’s written three books and formed another business called Heal + Create where he’s created a community platform to help people find the connection with themselves and creativity.
Our conversation weaves in and out of many topics including, Jacob’s definition of creativity, how he’s built his audience (which is over 1/2 million people), what he puts out on his platforms, how he helps people find their voice and the confidence to be creative using their own voice and how he put on his most successful writers retreat to date.
There is so much in this conversation that is worth paying attention to. I always learn something from Jacob when we share time. I have no doubt, you will learn something from our ramblings as well.

I had a chance to sit down and have a conversation with Sam and Eric Herrera and what a joy it was. There is so much to like about these two and I was fully loaded with curiosity and armed with questions.
Sam and Eric HerreraHere was my line of questioning:
Where are you from and how did you get to Idaho?
What were you doing before ERTH and what led to starting it?
What it is like running a business together? What advice would you give to couples who are considering being in business together? What do you each bring to the table?
What is gods name is a switchel!?
What role did the pandemic play in your company?
What’s the most successful way to work a Farmer’s Market?
When did you know that this was destined for more than just selling at the market?
What is the greatest challenge about getting into a store? Like the Co-op or Whole Foods or even Albertsons.
It seems that beverages have exploded over the last few years (or maybe 25 years). Through my limited eyes as a consumer, I think the tipping point was in the mid 90’s when microbrewing out of the PNW was deemed cool. From there, it’s been a blitz. Most recently, hard seltzers were the rage. Also, bottled water and carrying a drink everywhere became normalized. Where does your drink fit in the lexicon of drinks?
Talk to me about how important it is to you to use locally sourced products. What are the pros and cons of using these products?
Your biggest marketing success?
Thank you to Sam and Eric for coming on and sharing their story and bringing such great energy to the show.

On this episode, I have my friend, Joe Mikitish. Joe is the founder of Do Work University. Joe is one of the very best marketers and networkers that I know. I asked him to come in and talk about some best practices and he did not disappoint.
Networking is not something that comes naturally to many of us. It’s a learned skill. Joe helps you cut all of the fat and gets right to the heart of what really works. After you hear it, I don’t think you will be surprised and you may even be relieved. What we talk about are processes that I have put into play in my career and they are the foundation of how I have built such a strong referral network.
Once that network is built, your life gets substantially easier. The premise? Give value. You’ve heard that before. Joe walks you through what that really means in an actionable way. Thank you Joe for coming on and giving us a roadmap to follow.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Meagan Jones Schlekeway, founder/owner of Rooney Mae & Co for the None of My Business Podcast. Meagan brings so much to the show. She’s honest, humble, and hardworking with an artist’s soul.
Today Meagan designs and creates custom clothing for women with the goal of it being glamorous and comfortable. Her path to this business was full of surprises and detours. Along the way she found herself working for a large tech company in Seattle in 1999. Soon after that, the sky collapsed, the bubble burst and the line to apply to be a barista at Starbucks was 2 miles long.
She then moved down to Arizona. After AZ, Meagan entered the world of music living in two iconic hubs of American music, Austin and Nashville. She recorded and performed on over 50 albums. Meagan went around the world on tours. During this time, she was designing and creating unique clothing for herself and other performers. She soon was asked to design other types of clothing and she started designing and creating for weddings.
She then came home and started Rooney Mae and Co. I don’t want to spoil any more so you are going to have to get in and listen. Thank you Meagan for coming on and sharing your story!

Welcome back! I am so stoked to be kicking off Season 9! On this episode, I have my friend, Jasson Parra back on the show. Having guests return is really pretty special. You can hear the stretching and the growth that has occurred since the last time we talked. There are so many lessons that you have to learn and pay attention to during your journey as a business owner. I really enjoy capturing those in real-time, as their story progresses.
When I first sat down with Jasson, he had opened the Lemon Tree within a year. That time, I go the story of his past and what led him to opening his own shop. It’s a great conversation.
This time, I got to learn how he continued to refine his systems to the point where they could be duplicated. He has expanded and opened 2 additional locations. This is no easy feat. Especially during a full-blown pandemic and a recession.
Jasson is always smiling, quick to give you a hug and oozes positivity. It’s easy to see how people gravitate towards him. They look to him for guidance, and he’s built an amazing culture that is layered with hard work and fun.
I am sincerely happy that I know him. The Boise business community is better with Jasson in it. Thanks for coming on Jasson! I am a big fan.

Brett Labit was my very first guest on the show about 11 months ago. He now has the honor of being my first repeat guest on the show. Listen to that podcast here: From professional purgatory to CEO. His business is Local Impact Zone or LIZ and it has had an “exciting” year. I would encourage you to listen to the first show and then listen to this one. I have said it before about Brett, but I haven’t seen anyone will something to happen as much as I have with him.
At it’s peak, LIZ had 17 team members. At it’s valley, it was Brett and his son Brad. Then, something happened. Brett put something in motion 11 years ago when he reached out to Troy McClain. Troy was on the first season of the Apprentice and did exceptionally well. During the time the show was airing, Brett sent an email to Troy, introducing himself and floated an idea of creating a collaborative business community. If you knew Troy, you wouldn’t be shocked that he actually called Brett to speak to him.
Now the two are working together. Forging ideas that sprouted over a decade ago. Their two businesses are in the process of merging and their goal is teach leadership and the power of giving, to all who want to learn it. Please listen and enjoy the next chapter of this business survival story.

Over the following 8 years, they have grown from 1 stand to 9. They grew from 6 employees to 250. They grew into one of the most beloved businesses here in Idaho and earned Boise Business of the year in 2014.
We talk about some of the marketing they did in the first few years and what worked and what didn’t. We talk about how generous they are and how that is part of the culture of their business. We talk about how they learned to do all of the important things that good business owners HAVE to learn. I hope you enjoy our conversation.

“It depends”. That is your answer to all of your tax questions. Every single one of them.
Taxes play a crucial role in all businesses and to most entrepreneurs, it is like trying learn a foreign language. Not only is it like learning a new language, there are at least 4 potential answers to most tax questions. An accountant’s favorite answer is, “It depends”.
I have learned that you want your accountant to answer this way. It means they are making sure to give you the most correct answer to your question. I sat down with Ken Priebe who owns Treasure Valley Tax. He has been an accountant for 29 years and specializes in helping small businesses take care of their taxes.
The topics we cover include, how to decide what kind of entity to form, how your business changes from a tax standpoint when you hire employees, how to properly handle deductions, and how to stay in a lower tax bracket.

I had a wonderful conversation with Joel Lund owner of Prepare for Rain Coaching.
Joel is the co-founder of Prepare For Rain, LLC. He is a strong innovator and wears several hats: chief visionary officer leaks into all aspects of the business. He’s a serial entrepreneur, speaker and award-winning author (in non-fiction and fiction). He’s a dual-certified business and life coach, specializing in guiding his clients to easily tap into a few key resources so that they perform their mission beyond what they believed was possible.
In his coaching, speaking and writing, Joel’s focus is locked on empowering others on living into their full potential. This focus is built on the belief that most people allow distractions, circumstances, unexamined beliefs and fear to block them from living a purposeful life and reaching the goals they long for.
We cover a lot of ground including why it is smart to use a business coach and how they can accelerate your career and help you achieve your goals. We talk about the different type of entrepreneurs as written about in the book Entrepreneurial DNA. I learned a great deal from my time with Joel and hope you have some great takeaways as well.

I had a great conversation with Tobe Brockner who owns VSquared Creative. He was recently honored as one of Idaho Business Review’s Accomplished under 40. He has been in the marketing and advertising world for over 10 years now, he has written two books and has a passion for mastermind groups. We touch on all of those topics throughout the conversation.
Marketing and advertising is very challenging for both new business owners and seasoned ones. We talk about what questions a business owner needs to ask themselves, and how to move forward with these challenging topics. We land on the topic of “Omnipresence” which entails trying to be everywhere.
We cover mastermind groups as well. He believes there is great power in the collective power of motivated business owners and I have to say I agree with all he had to say. One of his books is directly related to this topic and you can find a link to it below. I hope you enjoy the conversation and learn some things that help you moving forward.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sherry Fernandez who owns Fit Mania. I had seen her speak a number of times through some marketing thing I have done, and knew I wanted to track her down for an interview. So I ran after her in a parking lot after an event and asked her, and I am glad I did.
Fit Mania is a great story. It was born out of the recession and has grown into 3 studios and 16 employees with no signs of slowing down. You can hear the passion in her voice about her business, her team, and the culture she has built.
Sherry has the DNA of an entrepreneur. She is self taught and self motivated and you can see why people are drawn to her.
She shares how her business started by giving classes in the parking lot.
What type of marketing has worked for her and what hasn’t
How she hires (she hasn’t had to fire anyone in 5 years)
Thanks to Sherry for sharing her story with us!
