The Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference has announced that special collections at all Masses will take place across Ireland on the weekend of 22 and 23 July to fund life-saving aid for people currently affected by the devastating hunger crisis in east-Africa. The money raised will be donated to Trócaire, the overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland, which is delivering emergency food, water and health care to the 25 million people affected.

Catholic Schools Week is an annual all-Ireland celebration which invites schools to give expression in an exceptional way to the ethos of Catholic education. It will take place from 29 January - 4 February 2017.
This year’s theme, ‘Catholic schools: Learning with Pope Francis to care for our common home’ has been informed by Laudato Si’, the 2015 encyclical by Pope Francis on care for our common home.
Catholic Schools Week acknowledges the tremendous contribution that our Catholic primary and post-primary schools make, not just to Irish society, but to the mission of the Church.
In this interview Father Tom Deenihan, Acting Secretary of the Bishops' Council for Education gives the background to Catholic Schools Week 2017 and shares his thoughts on why it is important to celebrated a Catholic Schools Week each year.

This is a special report and interview from Vatican Radio on the Irish bishops’ meeting with Pope Francis today as part of their Ad Limina visit.
Pope Francis met today, Friday 20 January, with the Irish bishops who are in Rome this week on their Ad limina visit – the first such visit since 2006.
Following the encounter, which lasted for over two hours, some of the bishops went to Vatican Radio to share their impressions and to talk about the most significant challenges facing the Church in Ireland today. Click below to listen to the interview with Vatican Radio:
Less than half of the bishops meeting with Pope Francis on Friday had been on an Ad limina visit before. Yet all of them were clearly impressed by the level of openness and dialogue they discovered in all the offices of the Roman Curia and particularly in their closed door, informal and unscripted conversation with the Pope.
Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh is President of the Irish Bishops’ Conference. Speaking about today’s meeting with Pope Francis, Archbishop Eamon said, “He [Pope Francis] said at the beginning, ‘I’ll throw in the ball and let’s see what happens’, so it turned out to be a conversation about the Church in Ireland, about the struggles and challenges we’re having, but also about the importance of a ministry of presence, a ministry of the ear, where we’re listening to the hopes, struggles and fears of our people….”
Featuring high on the agenda were discussions about the family and about the need to reach out to young people, especially those whose faith has been shattered by the numerous sex abuse scandals. As the bishops were meeting with the Pope in Rome, a new report was being published in Belfast about abuse cases and the bishops pledged their full cooperation in order to support victims and ensure the highest standards of child protection throughout the Church.
During their meetings the bishops said they spoke frankly of problems such as poverty and homelessness, the current political crisis in Northern Ireland, but also concerns about the place of women in the Catholic Church today, as Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin explained, “No subject was off the agenda….Pope Francis again said to talk about our experiences, our challenges, our criticisms….One theme that came up on numerous occasions was the position of women in the Church, we brought it up in almost every congregation we went to and there was a willingness to listen and a recognition that we were asking a valid question, because the Irish episcopal conference is quite concerned about that theme.”
The bishops said they also talked about preparations for the World Meeting of Families 2018 which will take place in Dublin next year, adding that they discussed with Pope Francis the possibility of his visit to Ireland for the occasion, a first papal trip there since Pope John Paul travelled to the country, back in 1979.

'Love One Another As I Have Loved You' is the title of a new book of prayers, meditations and reflections on family life compiled by Father Gareth Byrne, a priest of the Archdiocese of Dublin, in response to the publication of 'Amoris Laetitia' Pope Francis' apostolic exhortation 'on Love in the Family'.
The collection includes reflective pieces on family, friendship and opportunity and invites readers to take time in the healing presence of Jesus, opening themselves to the Spirit of God's love at work in their lives and in their relationships.

At their Winter General Meeting which concluded in Maynooth on 7 December, bishops announced a Christmas Crib Prayer to the Holy Family as part of preparations for the World Meeting of Families 2018.
On 22 October, formal preparations began for the 9th World Meeting of Families 2018 and these are being led by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin as President and host, and by Father Timothy Bartlett in his role as Secretary General. Last May, Pope Francis chose “The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World” as the theme for this major pastoral celebration which will take place in Dublin from 22 to 26 August 2018.
At their meeting, bishops encouraged the faithful to pray the Prayer to the Holy Family which has been written by Pope Francis and which he published in this year’s apostolic exhortation ‘Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love)’:
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of true love; to you we turn with trust.
Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches.
Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division; may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing.
Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer.
Amen.
600,000 copies of Pope Francis’ Prayer to the Holy Family are being made available to parishes across Ireland so that families can take a copy home after Christmas Mass from their church’s crib. The prayer is available in eleven languages: English, Irish, Polish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese and in Arabic and the Catholic Church across the world is being asked to place the Prayer to the Holy Family near parish cribs at the Christmas Vigil Mass on Christmas Eve, and also throughout the Christmas season.

Archbishop Kieran O'Reilly has published a Pastoral Letter entitled 'Come to the table'. The pastoral will be launched to coincide with the conclusion of Pope Francis' Jubilee Year of Mercy in the Archdiocese of Cashel & Emly at a special liturgy at 2.30pm in the Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles, on Sunday 20 November.
In his Pastoral Letter Archbishop O'Reilly says, "It is now over a year and a half since I took up my appointment here in the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. Over that time, I have had the opportunity to visit all the parishes of the Archdiocese – mainly for the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation but also for different celebrations and gatherings around special days in the life of parishes or around the Year of Mercy celebrated on a Deanery basis. I would like to express my thanks to Archbishop Clifford, the priests, people and religious of the Archdiocese – who have welcomed me from the announcement of my appointment in November 2014. I greatly appreciate the warm welcome that you continue to extend to me. In my homily at my installation, in February 2015, I stated that the Motto I had chosen for my ministry was “Your Word is Truth” (John 17:17) and that an important part of my ministry would be to promote the biblical apostolate at all levels throughout the Archdiocese. Personally, I have been blessed to have been able to study the Sacred Scriptures beyond what is the normal course of studies in theology while I trained for the missionary priesthood. As a result, I found great joy and satisfaction in the ministry of teaching in the Seminary of SS. Peter and Paul in Ibadan, Nigeria. My years of teaching those preparing for the priesthood gave me an insight into how important it is that all our learning should serve the deeper appreciation and love for the Word of God – a treasure given to us but which, at times, we can “park out of sight”. The manner in which the Bible is loved and read by so many people in the church in Africa has also inspired me. As we begin this new pastoral year in the life of the Church in our Archdiocese – schools and colleges are now reopened and the rhythm of life takes up again. I wish to issue an invitation to all to join me on a journey – a journey of discovery for some and a journey of rediscovery for many, of getting to know the Bible better. On this journey we will aim to place the Sacred Scriptures at the centre of our lives, at home, in the parish, at school and in the wider world where we live and work."

The Primate of All Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh will celebrate a Thanksgiving Mass this Saturday evening for all those who have been workers of mercy during this Jubilee year.
The Archbishop has invited people to share with him the names and work of those who put the corporal and spiritual works of mercy into action in their daily lives so they can be remembered at the celebration.
Speaking to Vatican Radio’s Chris Altieri, Archbishop Martin explained more about the Mass and the Year of Mercy in his Archdiocese.
"We’ve been very taken by Pope Francis’ words at the canonization of St Teresa of Calcutta”, said Archbishop Martin, “that she was an icon of mercy and also she was a model of holiness and using that as a springboard, I’ve been encouraging people throughout the diocese and indeed throughout Ireland to think about those people around them who are icons of Mercy…because as we know the universal Church has launched #BeMercy social media, a means of trying to tell people to think about the work of Mercy…I’m hoping that this Mass of thanksgiving will allow us to draw attention to individuals who are living and working the works of Mercy.”
Asked about initiatives for the Year of Mercy in his Archdiocese, Archbishop Martin explained, “I encouraged people in the diocese to write to me and to tell me about people they knew who are living and doing works. One letter he received was from a mother with severe diabetes who spoke about how her teenage son looked after her. The letter, said the Archbishop, “would bring a tear to your eye.”
Archbishop Martin noted that the Year of Mercy has put “a particularly interesting and innovative slant on the wonderful, powerful message of the Gospel.”

'God You’re Breaking my Heart: What is God’s response to suffering and evil?' is a new book by Jesuit author, Father Brian Grogan SJ.
Fr Grogan chose the title God you’re breaking my heart as he has heard it as the spontaneous cry of many an anguished heart. But it also hints at what is going on deeper down. The title has a double meaning: the slow sad music of humankind can indeed break our hearts; but God allows and uses suffering only to enlarge our heart’s capacity for that greater love that is its destiny. The glimmers of light offered by the Christian tradition can become a steady beam that can enable us to find our way home, even in heavy seas.

Father Donal O’Sullivan, who served as a World War I chaplain and who was killed in the first week of the Battle of the Somme on 5 July 1916 while ministering to the wounded, is being remembered and prayed for at Masses across the Diocese of Kerry today. Bishop Ray Browne, Bishop of Kerry, has asked that prayers would also be offered for world peace and for people everywhere who serve in the army of their country.
Father Donal O’Sullivan was born at 6 High Street in Killarney and was aged just 26 when he was killed. He was educated at the Monastery National School, Saint Brendan’s College in Killarney and Saint Patrick's College, Maynooth, and he was ordained to the priesthood in June 1914. He taught in Saint Brendan’s College for eighteen months prior to volunteering as a chaplain in WWI where he served as chaplain to the 7th Brigade.
Father Donal O’Sullivan was killed by a shell, which exploded beside him as he was giving the Last Rites to a wounded soldier. His chalice, which his family had presented to him on his ordination and which he had taken with him to the war, was returned to his family. It had stayed in possession of his family who had hoped that a vocation would arise from among them and when that did not happen it was passed into the care of the office for the Year ofPriests and then subsequently Saint Joseph's Young Priests Society. The chalice and Father Donal's story is being used to promote vocations to priesthood.
Father O’Sullivan is buried in the cemetery at Bouzincourt in the valley of the Somme.
On Thursday 23 June Father Ruairi O'Domhnall, who now looks after the chalice, was in the valley of the Somme as part of a special Centenary Pilgrimage which was led by the Catholic and Church of Ireland Archbishops of Armagh and which included young people from both traditions.
Father Ruairi had brought the chalice with him and hoped that the group might find the grave of Father O'Sullivan so as to bring the chalice back and share a moment of prayer at the graveside of Father Donal.

The annual conference of diocesan vocations directors took place from 9-11 July in Saint Patrick's College, Maynooth. Brenda Drumm spoke to Father Willie Purcell about the conference and vocations to priesthood and religious life.
Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong is a Mexican archbishop who works in the Roman Curia as Secretary for Seminaries of the Congregation for the Clergy. He was in Maynooth, Co Kildare for the Annual Conference of the Diocesan Vocations Directors which took place from 9-11 June in Saint Patrick's College, Maynooth. While he was in Ireland he also addressed the Summer General Meeting of the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference.
He spoke to CatholicNews.ie about his work with the Congregation for the Clercy, about the responsibility that lies with all in the Church to create and nurture a culture of vocations. He also shared his views on Ireland and the hope and green shoots he sees in young people - especially young seminarians and young consecrated persons.

Father Michael Paul Gallagher died in November 2015. He was 76.

The End of All Things Earthly is a new book edited by David Bracken from the Diocese of Limerick, which offers faith profiles of the 1916 Leaders. Featuring contributions from a selection of Irish academics and historians, the book comprises seventeen concise, yet richly detailed, essays that provide a fascinating insight into the faith profiles of the leaders of the Easter Rising.
The essays trace pivotal movements: from the horrors witnessed by Roger Casement in colonial Africa and South America; to the radicalisation of Patrick Pearse, whose writing reflected his Catholic upbringing; to the quiet prison cells in the sober aftermath of the Rising, where the likes of Con Colbert and Joseph Plunkett found consolation in their faith. The personal letters and testimonies of the leaders contained in the book provide a window into the minds of these revolutionaries as they faced their deaths.
Including rarely seen photographs and transcripts, The End of All Things Earthly, offers a poignant perspective on the events of 1916, and explores the spirituality that shaped those who gave their lives to Ireland's independence.

In this interview Brenda Drumm chats to David Bracken about where the idea for the book came from and the brief he gave to the contributors.
Last year, on a hot August afternoon in Rome, Father Antonio Spadaro SJ met with The Holy Father. Pope Francis greeted Father Spadora with a smile and offered him a drink of apricot juice before beginning their formidable task together. Father Spadora had brought with him 259 letters from 26 countries on six continents, written in 14 different languages, including a letter from Clara in Galway. Each child had illustrated his or her letter with a drawing. Pope Francis sat with Father Spadora and personally answered thirty of the children’s questions (including Clara’s) – although he wished he could answer them all.
During the course of the afternoon Father Spadaro and Pope Francis agreed that many of the questions were tough to answer. The letters were short, sharp, and clear, but they were also very practical. The Pope expressed his wish that all of the children could have been present while he answered their questions but he was very happy to read their questions and study their drawings.
The result of that afternoon’s work is Dear Pope Francis, a unique anthology of letters from children seeking answers from Pope Francis. Often children’s questions on faith and the world can be overlooked but in return for their wonderfully individual and illustrated letters Pope Francis responded to each of the children with inspiring and meaningful answers. Dear Pope Francis shows the Pope’s profound love and respect for children by making time to listen, to see, and to respond from his heart.

The Jubilee Year of Mercy will be inaugurated on 8 December, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and will run until 20 November 2016 which is the solemnity of Christ the King. Speaking about the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said: "I am confident that the whole Church, which is in such need of mercy for we are sinners, will be able to find in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering fruitful God’s mercy, with which we are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time."
