We may feel we are not good enough or talented enough to accept or welcome certain responsibilities. We may think others would do a much better job than us. However, Moses' experience teaches us that it is not so much about being able, but about being available. We all have unique gifts and talents. God's question prompts us to let Him use whatever is in our hands, whether it is a staff... or a guitar... you name it.
Jesus led by example. While his disciples argued about who would be greatest in the kingdom of their dreams, He focused on helping others, healing the sick and, basically, serving others. He realised his disciples were not getting the point. The same could happen to us. That's why Jesus' question is still so relevant today. We need to constantly ask ourselves if we understand what Jesus did for us, as our actions will flow from that understanding.
Studies such as the one performed by Rosenthal (the Pygmalion effect) show how instrumental expectations are in order to accomplish anything. Even Jesus encountered this reality when he tried to heal people, such as the man highlighted in today's episode, who had been sick for 38 years. The questions remain: What are your expectations in life? What do you dream of?
Have you ever stopped yourself to think, "How on earth did I get to this point?" You look back and see how decision after decision led you to this place, not precisely a pretty one. As followers of Jesus, we can also find ourselves in difficult situations. We experience anxiety and depression, just like Elijah did in 1 Kings 19. In this episode, we learn how to get out of that dark cave in three movements, with God's help.
In today's episode, Jesus interacts with a teacher of the law to get to the bottom of what the Law is really about. There are layers to it. Merely being able to recite the Law is not enough, you need to understand it. Once you do, you will see obedience has much more to do with love than anything else.
