The FTC argued that Meta's purchase would give it an unfair advantage in the burgeoning metaverse ecosystem, an argument strongly reminiscent of what critics levied against the social media giant when it purchased Whatsapp and Instagram during the early days of the smartphone. The decision is a loss for the FTC under Chairwoman Lina Khan, who has led the agency to adopt a more robust position on antitrust and competition law.

But with Facebook’s rebranding as Meta last year, an increasing consumer acceptance of virtual interactions post-Covid, and a steady uptick of interest from new sectors (ranging from retail to public services), the metaverse suddenly seems very real. Against this backdrop, questions inevitably arise about its benefits versus causes for concern, and how these ought to be managed.

Joe Biden's Democratic Party overperformed expectations in the United States midterm elections, surprising Washington and European observers and plunging Donald Trump and the Republican Party into newfound turmoil. From 12-17 June, trade ministers gathered in Geneva for the long-awaited 12th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC12) and achieved agreement on a series of reforms after several years of deadlock. These include an intellectual property waiver for covid-19 vaccines, the WTO response to the pandemic, a moratorium on e-commerce duties, and the partial elimination of fisheries subsidies. But will the MC12 outcomes save the WTO from its existential crisis? What will be their long-term impact on the organisation’s dealmaking function?
To discuss all this, GC’s Senior Adviser Tiffany McDonald gives us insight on the politics behind MC12, while trade and manufacturing Associate Yi-Fang Lee provides us with a deep-dive on the TRIPS waiver. Looking at the MENA region, Isabelle Trick, Ahmed Helal and Jens Presthus discuss today the implications of rising US-China tensions on the geopolitics of the Gulf.
They take a deep dive into the growing economic interdependency between the Gulf and China, especially on energy security and joint infrastructure development, and how that affects the Gulf’s historic strategic relationship with the US, traditionally the region’s security guarantor of choice.
They focus in particular on the sensitivities of technological cooperation between the Gulf and China in the areas of 5G roll-out and the procurement of advanced weaponry.
