Iain Armstrong
I'm a composer and sound artist. I'm interested in the act of listening, phonography and finding musical ways to express these interests. Now and again I perform live with a laptop, creating soundscapes from field recordings. I do this solo, as Anvil & Stirrup with Antti Saario and with Annie Mahtani as SOUNDkitchen. I also compose music and create sound design for theatre, dance and film.

These excerpts are taken from my orignal score for Cali Danza's contemporary dance work 'Donas'. The complete work draws inspiration from Galician folk music, orchestral music, hybrid cinematic music and features vocal sampling, strings, woodwind and percussion alongside electronic sounds and textures.'Donas' premiered in Lugo, Spain, Jan 2024.

These excerpts are taken from my score for Humanhood Dance's '∞ [Infinite]'. 'Infinite' is a dance theatre meditation in which the audience are guided through a mystical journey. The outside world of the magical dance on stage merges with your internal awareness. 'Infinite' premiered in Barcelona, Spain, April 2022.

These excerpts are taken from my orignal score for Cali Danza's contemporary dance work 'Donas'. A slow immersive track based on a simple idea of a repetitive piano line being consumed by a dense texture of string instruments. This track features Pianobook's S.K.Y. Felt Piano, LABS Frozen Strings, Scary Strings, Amplified Cello Quartet, Hand Bells and a couple of Albion One synths.
This track began with a sample from 8DIO's Free Angels which can be heard looping at the beginning and end. This was the inspiration to write the rest of the track. The instrumentation of piano and strings is expanded to include solo clarinet and cello. This track also features Pianobook's Winter Piano, Spitfire's British Drama Toolkit and Aperture Strings.
Large breakwater boulders below the harbour wall at Caloura created a small 'cave' acoustic to record the sea waves.
Afternoon recording from Lagoa do Congro of frogs in close proximity accompanied by birdsong.

A recording mid way up the beach at Porto Formoso with the sound of the waves breaking on the sandy shore in front and birds in the dunes and vegetation to the rear.
