Caution against Comparisons: Don’t worry about being better than somebody else, but never cease trying to be the best YOU can be.  You have control over that, not the other.

Free from judgement of outsiders.  Focus on ceaseless effort in bringing forth your own potential.  No performance alone, place in a race, or finishing time can tell you whether or not you have succeeded in achieving this.  Only you can judge your success by the peace of mind in knowing you’ve given your personal best.

Strive to accomplish the very best that you are capable of.  Nothing less than your best effort will suffice.  You may fool others, but you can never fool yourself.  Self-satisfaction will come from the knowledge that you left no stone unturned in an effort to accomplish everything possible under the circumstances.
Make today YOUR masterpiece, taking what you have a creating with it.

Appreciation for and Approach to Running.

THANK YOU RUNNING

We do every run with our feet, but we also do it in our head ...

Running has provided an overwhelming amount of Joyful Experiences, Exercise, Travel, Meditation, Spirituality, a skill set to share with others, an opportunity to think through life events as they stand at this moment, life’s experience we can share with others, a discipline, personal control, a better understanding of our higher power and his plan for us.

We don’t love running just because we’re “good at it”, perhaps we become “good at it” because we find ourselves loving it.

My Personal Gratitude:

“I'm extremely grateful for the families, coaches, teammates, and experiences along my journey of sport and life. Embracing them as part of my team and learning through my process, I genuinely acknowledge the powerful impact sport has on our personal growth. From these people and experiences I’ve been moved to diligently research in developing specialized programs for individuals, from how we motivate someone to how we physically train them. Through it all is a process of growth at all levels (physical, mental, social, and spiritual). I'm honored to be apart of the process in helping others reach their Personal Best.” ~ CoachHudgens

The process of growth and the journey of sport will have many ups and downs, twists and turns (ran-fast-turn-left), we can Trust that God is a good steward of all of them, and we can embrace His presence, and all we share this gift with, in each step we take.

Praying for success is not as great as praying for wonder and awe. So much greater than a successful life is living a life that is wonderfully awesome!

A meet is the prime opportunity to practice “PBA perspective”: “ENJOY the PROCESS of PROGRESSION” and “TRUST THE PLAN”.

Developing a “growth mindset” seeing races as “opportunities”, not always to PR but to “EXPERIENCE” the joy that comes from the rush of pushing ourselves to our potential for the day. ^That’s a PR every time.

More specifically we have discussed three goals specifically for the ORU meet in respect to our current fitness level and preparations thus far:

  1. THE PIPE DREAM GOAL (surfing metaphor) is the best case scenario. If your body fully responds to your effort and you “outperform yourself”, a sense of performing beyond yourself.

  2. THE ATTAINABLE GOAL is effectively executing the fitness level and preparations thus far. A great performance that we can celebrate and learn from.

  3. Worst case scenario but still a Great Sense of ACCOMPLISHMENT GOAL is when the body doesn’t respond to our effort and we find i it difficult to execute efficiently. Perhaps even an unhealthy response from our body we can’t control- a side ache, getting tripped up, over or under our optimal arousal state, etc. We can still celebrate the grit of persevering through the race, developing a deeper composure of being comfortable with being uncomfortable, and learn from the experience.

FEW THOUGHTS Savor and reflect on specific applications from practices in preparation for this meet:

1️⃣. We practiced assessing our intervals and runs with how efficient, effective, and in the Flow we felt throughout each interval. 1-feels a little jary and inefficient. 2-feels smooth but have to really think about it. 3-feels smooth and don’t even have to think “in the FLOW”.

2️⃣. Practice breathing and Acknowledge levels of stiffness/function throughout the warmup. Focus on identifying areas (knees, hamstrings, back, shoulders) that could be released and move more freely to efficiently execute an in the “Flow-like” performance.

3️⃣. Embrace and Enjoy the whole meet experience: we get to hangout, run, warmup, race, and share all this with our running community. Embrace the rich relationships running so graciously provides us!

Holidays are tough and even hallmark Valentines was hard, but on a random Tuesday it really hits me as i get in my car, doesn’t matter where I’m driving too, I just miss the thought that anytime I can call you ...

But I can’t, I can’t just call you to share the many blessings I’ve experienced so far this year, the ever-growing gift of God’s Gracious Love, all the teaching, the coaching, and the running ...

Momma I get to run - and as you know - to me “Running is Fun” - perhaps because I’m weird but to you I’ve always been “unique” - I love that’s how you’ve always seen all my idiosyncrasies - like in the midst of being uncomfortable and the challenging experiences I face, I lean on this Mantra “Thank You Momma” and I sense your presence, full of Grace, saying, “GO ERIC”, picking me up with your presence cheering me on “I am with you, Yes You Can!!!” And how proud you are as if saying, “I love to watch you run and do your thing, Do the Best you can, and your Personal Best is always well done!”

Your family you’d be so proud of too, They’re all doing surprisingly well, obviously because of you.

Despite this season of unexpected loss, like Wondering around in the midst of a cloudy chaos, Surprisingly, they’ve all found this harmonizing balance with their feet firm on the ground. I know they hurt at times, but They each seem sooo strong, and I’m sooo grateful, it’s beyond what I could have imagined ... sounds like your song. (🎵I can only imagine🎵)

It’s tough and hard Without you here, but thankfully I can see you! When I look into my reflection in the mirror, I’m moved with gratitude by all the memories we shared. My heartache takes a break, and I’m reminded of who I am because of you.

In you I am unconditionally loved, and I get to share that, hopefully being a presence of health and happiness, empowering others, living out a loving expression of your impact, and all the ways you’ve empowered me to do more than I’d dare in my own strength, thanks to you I am well prepared to manage well, even a random Tuesday when I’m feeling weak.

“🙏🏼Thank You Momma❤️”

You are my Strong Melody You are my Dancing Rhythm You are my Perfect Rhyme

Flow is a nurturing principle of Positive Psychology that can guide us to greater WELL-BEING through the five pillars of PERMA: Positive Emotion enjoying the present without worry of the future or regret of the past, Engagement blissful immersion in the present moment, Relationships embracing the network of social support and finding a goal that allows enjoyment in life while being responsible to others, Meaning investing time, talents, and strengths for good, and Accomplishment achievement for achievement sake. It’s important to acknowledge that Flow does not have to result in success or even happiness, and that Flow can be an experience of working through adversity. By defining our strengths, passions, and mindfully savoring opportunities to experience them, we can find our FLOW...

How does it feel to be in FLOW?To understand what FLOW is, it is helpful to look at what is happening when FLOW is experienced. The following characteristics do not all need to be present to experience flow, the more that are present, the more likely it is that flow will occur.

  1. Completely involved in what we are doing – focused, concentrated.
  2. A sense of ecstasy – of being outside everyday reality.
  3. Great inner clarity – Knowing what needs to be done, and how well we are doing.
  4. Knowing that the activity is doable – that our skills are adequate to the task.
  5. A sense of serenity – no worries about oneself, and a feeling of growing beyond the boundaries of the ego.
  6. Timelessness – thoroughly focused on the present, honors seem to pass by in minutes.
  7. Intrinsic motivation – whatever produces flow becomes its own reward.

Hopefully through this lesson we’re able to develop practices more than just relaxation attempts to feel a little bit better to work a bit harder, but a transformational way of how we relate to our lives, our bodies, and calling, our loves, our ambition to live a life of balance and fundamental sound satisfaction that’s deeper than our circumstances.

Perhaps this global crisis of Covid-19 gives you as a student and the university as an education what we could never adequately simulate in schools: An enduring appreciation of our interdependence - a perhaps forced upon us sense of self-efficacy, a real grasp of the relationship between personal responsibility and freedom, and actual experience with how to truly be still in His Presence. The potential resourcefulness we can grow in throughout this pandemic would be a terrible thing to waste.

The expectation evolved in our society has catapulted us that work can encroach every aspect of life. But there are potential costs to pay such as burnout, addiction in terms of overdosing, and perhaps we’re not tapping into the creativity we once experienced.

To buffer the overstimulated stress of always having to do something, there’s a practice called being present or “Mindfulness” ... A non-judgemental moment to moment awareness cultivated by paying attention on purpose.

DEEP BREATH - COMPOSURE :: The present moment is the only one we are alive in, the only moment we can think, perceive, see, do, or create anything. Imagine, be in the present moment without any judgement or expectation.

If we're always blasting through the present moment to get to some better moment, in a sense we’re not reading the present moment; we're not inhabiting the moment that matters most, the present moment.

“All that is important is this one moment in movement. Make the moment vital and worth living. Do not let it slip away unnoticed and unused.” –Martha Graham

We can change the relationship in our perception toward stress which can reduce, slow to normal the degradation of our immune system and decrease the risk of susceptible diseases and infections.

A method to voluntarily bring the mind back to when it wanders off would be the foundation of the best possible education (paraphrased from William James). The mind quickly gets off track, we want to bring it back. This Daily Discipline is more play than work. Sure it’s a commitment to practice – start where you are and grow in it, a method to bring the mind back when it’s possibly lost.

Praying and Meditating on simple positive and powerful truths is a great start:

I am a Human “BEING”, I am here, non-doing, nowhere to go, nothing to do, and nothing to attain. I am Already Complete, I am Already Whole. Thank you Lord that in Christ I am righteous - in right standing with you, Lord, my creator, Thank you for your presence here and now.

GRATITUDE is a great motivation to live in, and Reflection or Savoring is a practice of remembering important moments that we were not mindful of. So as we practice being present we can also reinforce moments we possibly missed being present in, and reinforce being present in them.

For a few days practice a “Three Gratitudes Journal”. Basically reviewing the day with more attention to the experiences, people, gifts, accomplishments (big or small) that we can relive and reinforce our attention on the important things. Example: 1.) a phone call with someone we care about, 2.) a food or drink that we can literally savor, 3.) an unexpected word of encouragement from someone that changed the trajectory and level of enthusiasm throughout the day.

LLL - Life Long Learners

Cultivated Community of Skill Sharers

My personal gratitude for the cultivated environment of Personal Best Athletics is multi-dimensional. An example, is how courageous the youth are in their willingness to introduce others to the routines and exercises they have developed over time. They might not fully realize how reciprocal this experience is. This article points out, “the best way to learn something is not to do it but to teach it.” We understand it better after we explain it — and we remember it better after reflecting on what we do, how we do it, and then sharing in those practices by communicating, demonstrating, and guiding others.

Point is, as we gain experience reviewing, demonstrating, and explaining a skill, we enhance the development of our ability to execute that skill.

Social scientists call it the curse of knowledge. As the psychologist Sian Beilock, now the president of Barnard College, writes, “As you get better and better at what you do, your ability to communicate your understanding or to help others learn that skill often gets worse and worse.”

Doing and Teaching are distinct skills, being good at one doesn’t mean we are bad at the other, but it doesn’t mean we have developed the skills to be good at the other.

Seeking out an expert for a teacher or coach, remember that it’s not just about what they know; it’s about how recently and easily they learned it, and how clearly and enthusiastically they communicate it.

Most importantly and most impactful is a teacher/coach who cares about the student/athlete, and that the environment they cultivate is enjoyable and exciting to learn and grow in with a community in which we all feel valued and can contribute to.

Grace and Peace,

~CoachHudgens

Welcome — that’s a good start to relationships — feeling welcomed. Thank you for sharing you’re presence with me!

There’s a respect and awe in each of us — our presence is powerful, impactful, and important — each of us has something special to share with the world, and we can encourage one another to do just that.

I believe our greatest gift is our presence and all the abilities uniquely gifted with in us along with the Gift Rich Relationships that we get to graciously share with.

So here I am Coach Eric Hudgens sharing a passion that’s been marinating for many years — I’m thankful for the Anchor platform providing a free and easy way to share stories and experiences of how we can grow in our relationship with our own ever-growing presence, personality, and purpose. Along with how we relate to our gifts and talents and the ongoing growing in them. Most importantly how we share and relate to others in our journey of sport and life: our family, friends, and friends we haven’t met yet (which sometimes start off as our competition).

So Cheers to Rich Relationships!

Intriguing to me is We are each a mystery to figure out, thankfully Anchor has a simple step by step system of figuring out how to record and edit the stories I’ll share here on Coach Eric Hudgens Podcast.

I’m not promising all the answers to the mystery that’s in you, but thankfully the easy accessibility distributed freely by Anchor might give you a spark of insight into you’re own story and stimulate some thought provoking ways that increases your intuition and reflection on your experiences to embrace engage and enjoy you’re journey with an enhanced sense of peace, empowerment, and purpose.

There’s a bit of grace moving forward with this passion to share stories with you, hopefully you’re patient with me as I’m growing step by step, hopefully inspiring other, and encouraging the building of rich relationships, perhaps the sharing of these stories guide us to identify and increase our tribe of Thriving Community, and selfishly there’s a potential of some small income coming in as Anchor not only provides each podcast free to make but also sponsorship abilities as an additional extrinsic reward — a one stop shop all in one place — Anchor is a great foundation to share stories!

Grace and Peace family and friends, and friends I haven’t met yet. Cheers to our individually unique journey, and the rich relationships we get to share with!

Personal Story of overcoming adversity, including lessons learned and character gained through the experience...

"I made it to track state in the 1600 and the 3200 my Freshman year. I was beyond nervous and kept rerunning the 3200 in my head. It was finally race time. I ran the race and ended up getting last. It was the most embarrassing thing in my life at the time. I knew I had to let that race go but it was so hard not to think about it. I had to mentally get over this fast. Luckily by the next morning I was fine and ready to get the 1600 started. I overcame what happened the day before and got 10th in the 1600. I learned that you cant hold onto things that happened in the past if you want to achieve in the future. Even the best of the best have bad days its just that they have overcome the past and have moved onto the future. If you can do that you can do anything."

Coach Hudgens bio and insights on Ashley Barnes..."I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Ashley's journey in running and life which started the summer after her 8th grade year. In a word, Ashley is a SAINT, and her family is phenomenal. Her character and drive for experiencing her personal best come from a pure place in her heart to truly become all that God has created her to be. Her faith leads and guides her to make the healthiest of choices and is what she relies on for strength, peace, and love. In her family she is the oldest and the most relied upon. This was quickly noticeable as she has been a leader since the first day she started with Personal Best Athletics especially through mentoring and inspiring the younger girls in the club. But even her peers admire and learn from her example in running and life."
