Chocolate Cake Bytes is a Latter-day Saint culture discussion. Chocolate cake represents everything that is good, and Chocolate Cake Bytes are the nuggets of understanding that has made my life better. And I'd like to share some chocolate cake bytes with you.
This week, I’m back in my own space after a whirlwind of travel, and I’m reflecting on what it means to find stability when everything seems to change at lightning speed. From airport delays to marathon mountain climbs, this episode dives deep into the unexpected twists that life throws our way, and how a steady, guiding presence can make all the difference.
At the center of our conversation is Elder Holmes’ talk, “Jesus Christ Is the Way.” I share a personal story about my friend CJ, who is blind, and the remarkable systems and support (including a sighted guide) that allow him to navigate life’s challenges. But what if Christ isn’t just the guide—what if He’s actually the path itself? This idea has me asking how we lean into His support and access the comfort and assurance only He can offer, especially when plans fall apart. I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences—how do you hold onto your Guide when life takes an unexpected turn?
Join me as we unpack these questions, and let’s keep moving forward, holding on to the Savior who’s more than a guide—He’s the very way through every mountain and marathon we face.

This week, we're talking about the power and discomfort of making decisions—big or small. Ever noticed how being out of your element or off your routine can throw off your sense of control? That happened to me this week while traveling, and it made me think deeply about how we handle choices when life feels unsettled.
The heart of this episode is a raw look at the idea that our greatest power lies in choosing for ourselves. Too often, we avoid decisions, hoping life will sort itself out, or we surrender our authority by letting others (or our own Rationalizer voice) decide for us. What actually happens when we don't choose? Is "not to decide" really a decision in itself? These questions shaped my week—and this conversation.
If you've ever felt stuck between options or intimidated by the pressure to get it “right,” this episode is for you. My challenge for you this week: make a decision, no matter the size, and feel the momentum that comes from moving forward. And if you want to dig deeper into the philosophy of decision-making—or even disagree with me about whether not to decide is to decide—reach out. Let’s get ambitious together.

Today we dive into the concept of identity and its powerful impact on our personal and professional lives. How we see ourselves shapes not only the choices we make but also the authority we exercise over our lives. The goal in this life: becoming the kind of person who acts, rather than being acted upon—transforming habits, mindsets, and circumstances through intentional identity shifts.

This week, I'm coming to you in the middle of July—can you believe summer is already halfway over? I've been heads-down, racing to finish writing a new book (spoiler: I'm cranking it out fast and hoping to get it on Amazon before the end of the month). Along the way, an interesting theme keeps popping up in my conversations: fear, especially the fear of doing things the "wrong" way. Is it possible that our Church culture turns life into a series of right-and-wrong choices and leaves us stuck, afraid to act if we might get it wrong?
I take a closer look at this mindset and share some practical thoughts about the difference between moral right and wrong, and what's just a matter of convenience or preference. Using a lighthearted restaurant adventure as an example, I unpack how getting a little "lost" or making mistakes isn't always a bad thing—sometimes you even end up with a sunset you would have missed. What if there's room for grace in how we navigate big decisions that aren't moral issues at all?
Join me for a fresh take on perfectionism and fear, and let's rethink what it really means to "choose the right"—not just as a box-checking exercise, but as a way to move forward with faith, flexibility, and maybe a little bit of chocolate cake.

This week, I'm diving deep into the topic of ministering—what does it really mean, and how can we live it more authentically? With a few thunderstorms shaking up our July Fourth plans here in the Midwest, I've had some extra moments to reflect on what it means to be present in others' lives, not just through assignments, but through genuine, heartfelt connection.
We'll talk about the power of noticing others, embracing your divine gifts, and making an impact not because you're assigned, but because it's who you are. I'll share how experiences like teaching in Elders Quorum—or even simple gestures like offering a chocolate cake—can be small but meaningful ways to light up someone's world. What do you bring to your relationships that naturally blesses others? And how would your life change if you shared those gifts on purpose, every day?
Let’s challenge ourselves to think beyond formal assignments and instead minister in ways that are natural and true to who we are. As you go about your week, who do you know that could use a little extra sweetness—and maybe even a chocolate cake?

This week, I’m inviting you into a real-life saga of modern inconvenience—my Xfinity internet meltdown. Maybe you’re enjoying a long July 4th weekend (and hopefully better weather than the current heat wave), but have you ever found your work-from-home routine completely upended by a construction crew and a vanishing internet connection? That’s exactly what happened here, all thanks to some ambitious neighborhood development and a missing junction box.
But this isn’t just a rant about tech support nightmares—though you’ll definitely get a taste of those frustrating “six days until a technician can help” conversations. The heart of this episode is a deeper look at what really steals our focus and peace. How many hours do we let the uncontrollable hijack our day, our attention, even our interactions with others? I’ll walk you through my own moments of letting frustration take over, and invite you to reflect: what are you allowing to distract you from what matters most?
Join me as I unpack the unexpected lessons a broken internet line can teach us about patience, priorities, and being present. Maybe together, we can learn how to let go a little sooner—and enjoy the sweet moments life has to offer.

This week, I’m sharing a real-life tale of unexpected challenges and creative solutions—a sudden power outage in the middle of a busy afternoon. Ever had one of those days where nothing goes as planned? Between a Zoom call with a prospect, prepping cakes to send out, and getting ready for a hot wings (well, chicken legs) challenge at our Elders Quorum activity, I quickly learned just how dependent I am on electricity for, well, pretty much everything!
But here’s where the story gets interesting. With no power, I had to get resourceful—melting butter in my hot car for frosting, switching to a gas grill recently vacated by a sparrow family, and scrounging up a battery-powered printer to get shipping labels out on time. The end result? Everything got done—even if not quite the way I’d planned.
This episode is really about leaning into life’s difficulties and embracing creative problem-solving. I share how these inconvenient moments teach us strength we can’t develop any other way—just like those baby sparrows need to break out of their shells themselves. So if you’ve ever longed for an easy, smooth path, join me as we reflect on why the struggle might actually be the blessing.

This week, I’m taking a bite out of the topic of ministering—what it means, how it’s shifted over the years, and why many of us still struggle with it. Ever find yourself asking if you’re “doing enough,” or wondering what the checklist is supposed to look like now that home teaching has evolved into something so much less defined? I was recently at our ward conference and found myself in a discussion that inspired me to bring this conversation to the podcast. If you missed my comment there, you’ll catch it here.
But here's the real meat (or cake!) for this episode: ministering isn’t just about doing assigned tasks; it’s about becoming a certain kind of person. I share some thoughts and personal stories—including a “Kevin day” that ended up meaning more than I expected—about acting on generous thoughts and being that person who reaches out, even if there's no response. How might our relationships change if we stopped worrying about the checklist and focused on being present, kind, and proactive?
As you head into your day (or weekend!), take a minute to consider: who could use a little chocolate cake, or just a message from you? Let’s see what sweetness comes from simply being there for each other.

This week, I'm digging deep into my personal study of 3rd Nephi—the Book of Mormon chapters that capture Christ’s visit to the Americas after His resurrection. Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to stand in that crowd, to hear the voice from heaven, and to come one by one to the Savior? I find myself amazed by both the timing and the tenderness of these moments.
Together, let’s walk through these chapters and imagine what it must have felt like to not only witness miracles, but to experience them individually—one by one. From feeling the prints of the nails, to being healed, to seeing the children blessed, these verses remind me that Christ’s love and ministry are always personal and tailored for each soul. If you need a reminder this week about how individual and intentional the gospel really is, this conversation is for you. As you listen, I hope you’ll ask yourself: what would your testimony be, if you had been there?

This week, I'm getting real about something that's been on my mind for a while: how our early messaging and expectations shape the way we see others—especially in church. Teaching institute and revisiting Elder Neil Anderson's "The Divine Gift of Forgiveness" has me reflecting on the complexities of repentance, and why change isn't always instant or easy.
I open up about a moment from my own experience on the High Council, when an unexpected reaction to someone's choice of Sunday attire challenged me to confront old judgments. It's honest, a little uncomfortable, but ultimately a reminder that what matters most is not the clothes we wear, but the direction we’re heading on our spiritual journey. If you've ever felt stuck in old habits or discouraged by slow progress, you're not alone. Together, we're all trying to take one step closer to becoming like the Savior, even if it takes more time than we'd hoped.
This episode is an invitation to be gentle with yourself on the path—and maybe to laugh about mismatched socks along the way. Let’s look for those sweet nuggets of goodness in our imperfect efforts and keep moving forward.

This week, as school winds down and the rhythms of summer begin, I’m sharing a story that’s been resonating with me and my group coaching clients—a simple yet powerful reminder that we often have a bigger impact than we realize. Maybe you’re settling into the summer break, or maybe life is just changing pace, but wherever you are, I want to dig into how small acts and simple words can ripple out in ways we never expect.
I revisit one of my all-time favorite TED Talks—a story about lollipops, college nerves, and how an offhand moment can change the entire course of someone’s life. We’re talking about being seen, making a difference (even when you have no idea you’re doing it), and the importance of sharing gratitude with the people who have touched your life.
Let’s lean into this new season with an abundance of kindness. Be generous with your compliments, tell people when they’ve made a difference, and remember: you might be the person who’s quietly changed everything for someone else—whether you know it or not.

This week, I'm taking a fresh look at something that's been cropping up in my life—perspective. What if, instead of asking God to give us what we want, we started asking Him to show us a glimpse of what we're actually capable of? During a recent walk (inspired by a simple exercise challenge), I found myself wondering about the gap between what I believe I can do and what my Heavenly Father knows I’m capable of. How much more could we accomplish if we truly understood our divine DNA?
I'm also sharing insights from a recent coaching call with my group clients, where one member showed vulnerability and worried it made her look weak—when in reality, her honesty and resilience inspired everyone. I know I’m not the only one who sometimes feels inadequate or suffers from imposter syndrome, but here’s the twist: Most people only see your strength and assume you’re doing better than you think you are. So here's my invitation: Let’s lean into the magnificent truth that you are stronger, better, and more impactful than you know—simply because of who you are and your divine heritage.

This week, I'm flying solo but bringing you nuggets of wisdom fresh from a recent conference that really made me pause and reflect. Have you ever stopped to consider how those heavy or discouraging thoughts you have might just be limiting beliefs—or even lies? I dive into why that simple idea struck me so profoundly and how it connects to stories and struggles we've talked about before.
At the heart of this episode, I revisit the parable of the talents, this time through a more personal lens. What if it's not just about using our gifts, but about how we view ourselves and our willingness to be visible? I share candid thoughts about how fear of being seen—or worry about what others think—can keep us hiding our abilities, both in business and in faith.
If you've ever felt held back by self-doubt or the feeling that you're just not "good enough," this one's especially for you. What limiting beliefs might be souring your life, and are you ready to challenge them? Join me as we explore how changing our mindset can open up both spiritual and personal growth. I've been thinking about conflict this week—and not just the kind that involves a heated argument or a workplace showdown. This episode, I get personal about how I've often dodged difficult conversations, both in my career at FedEx and in my everyday relationships. What does it really mean to avoid discomfort, and how might that be holding us back? If you've ever found yourself sidestepping those cringe-worthy moments, this one’s for you.
But here's the twist that hit me today: what if we saw conflict—especially internal conflict—as our greatest opportunity for growth? Whether it's wrestling with our own identity, tackling new challenges in business (like getting comfortable on video!), or facing tough gospel questions, I dive into why our sticking points might actually be our launching pads. Maybe it’s time to stop equating conflict with contention, and start seeing those uncomfortable moments as the very places where transformation happens. Think about it: Are you leaning away from conflict, or leaning into growth?

The Hymn of the Pearl
This week, we dive into a story that’s stuck with me ever since I heard it in sacrament meeting: the Hymn of the Pearl. Have you ever felt like you were just going through the motions, forgetting who you really are? Join us as we unpack this ancient Christian allegory about a prince on a mission—sent far from his home, caught in the distractions of Egypt, and needing a powerful reminder of his true purpose. What does “Egypt” look like in your life? And who or what helps you remember your identity and mission?
We get real about how easy it is to lose focus and get tangled in the problems of the world—whether it’s politics, social media, or local drama (like a new housing development going up across the street). I share some honest struggles about wanting to fix everything, and together we ask: where should we actually spend our energy, and what’s okay to just let go? Plus, a powerful reminder from the Serenity Prayer helps guide us through the wisdom of knowing what we can—and can’t—change.
If you’ve ever wondered how to stay grounded when life gets overwhelming, or how to reconnect with your divine identity, you won’t want to miss this one. I’d love to hear—what are the “letters” in your life that help you wake up and remember who you really are?

This week, I’m reflecting on something that hits close to home for so many of us—the struggle to remember our true worth and divine nature. After a few personal conversations and seeing an inspiring video, I found myself asking: Do we really understand who we are as children of God? And if we did, would we ever doubt our value or potential?
I dive into honest questions about confidence, self-esteem, and the ways we sometimes hold ourselves back out of fear or misunderstanding. What would change if we saw ourselves—not through our own flawed perspective, but more like God sees us? Have you ever thought to simply ask Him for a glimpse of your worth? I invite you to join me in that challenge and see what possibilities could open up.
As we round out another month, let’s remind ourselves: you are deeply loved, intrinsically divine, and more magnificent than you might believe. Pause, reflect, and maybe ask for that heavenly perspective this week. I’d love to hear how it goes and what you’re discovering about your own divine DNA.

This week, I'm joined by Ganel-Lyn Condie: author, speaker, and, as you'll hear, self-proclaimed sourdough novice turned minister. We dive into the unique ministry she's developed through sharing homemade sourdough bread, and how something as simple as a loaf can be a conduit for connection, kindness, and even healing. Have you ever tried to turn a hobby or struggle into a way to bless others? Ganel-Lyn shares candidly about her own failures, triumphs, and the people who showed up just when she needed a "Sue" herself.
But the real magic of this conversation is about more than bread. We talk about the quiet seasons of life—those stretches when our roles, routines, and identities seem to shift beneath our feet. What does it look like to listen for promptings, act on them (especially when they're unexpected or uncomfortable), and trust God with the outcomes? Whether your thing is chocolate cake, sourdough, or just lending a listening ear, Ganel-Lyn reminds us that small offerings and moments of ministering have big ripple effects.
So as you listen, think about what you might have to offer—however ordinary or unfinished it feels right now. Who do you know that needs a little "sourdough ministry"? Who needs a text, a cake, or just a listening friend? Let's make space for the quiet miracles that show up when we dare to reach out.

This week, I’m sharing some thoughts fresh from a talk I gave in sacrament meeting—and giving you a peek behind the curtain about what was on my mind as I wrote it. Ever wonder how we actually “find the Savior in everyday life”? It’s a question I was assigned to wrestle with, and it got me thinking: do we stumble into moments where we feel Christ’s presence, or do we have to search for Him intentionally? Together, we’ll explore not just the unexpected ways we might notice the divine, but how choosing to look shapes what we find.
I’ll walk you through a quirky (and maybe slightly ridiculous) experiment—what do unicorns, purple trucks, and hidden hearts have to do with recognizing God? More than you’d expect! Join me as I share a three-step invitation for making these small moments matter: remembering God loves us, practicing gratitude, and looking outward for someone else who needs to be noticed.
This episode is a simple pause to let you connect, reflect, and maybe even see the everyday with new eyes. As you listen, I hope you’ll find your own sweet nuggets of goodness, and maybe even an unexpected heart or two along the way.

This week, I’m not alone in the Chocolate Cake Bytes studio—Verlin from the Cultural Hall podcast joins me for a conversation that’s more lively (and maybe less wisecracking) than going solo. We take on a topic that gets thrown around a lot in church settings: is there really a difference between conflict and contention? And are we “of the devil” every time we disagree?
Verlin and I go deep into what the scriptures actually say—and what they don’t—about the spirit of contention and how sometimes, avoiding conflict isn’t as virtuous as we might think. Along the way, we laugh about sibling boxing matches, rebellious chili spice levels, and the perils of answering, “Does this make me look fat?” But the heart of the episode is a practical, gospel-centered look at how facing disagreements with honesty and kindness can help us grow—and how curating our lives and even our social media feeds toward goodness can help us avoid contention, not conflict.
If you’ve ever found yourself tiptoeing around hard conversations, or you’re wondering how to handle “porcupines” in your life, this episode is for you. Let’s learn how to resolve differences while keeping the sweet spirit the gospel offers.

Easter is just around the corner, and this week I'm getting thoughtful about how we experience and understand Holy Week. Why are so many of us in the Church increasingly focused on Easter as a season, not just a one-day celebration? I share some personal reflections on what Easter means to me, and why this time of year draws my heart back to the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the gift of forgiveness.
But here’s the twist: Have we misunderstood how repentance and forgiveness work? I unpack the common belief that repentance is the "price" we pay for forgiveness—and why I think that’s totally missing the point. Inspired by insights from teaching BYU-Idaho Pathways students and reading Elder Andersen’s The Divine Gift of Forgiveness, I explore the idea that forgiveness isn’t something we earn. Instead, repentance becomes the way we turn our hearts toward God, not just a checklist to wipe the slate clean.
As you head into Holy Week, I invite you to rethink what it means to atone and be forgiven. It’s not about groveling or hoop-jumping—it’s about daily change, sincere turning, and becoming someone who loves the Savior more deeply.

This week, I'm diving into something a little more personal as I sift through old memories and rediscover moments that shaped my journey. Ever wonder about the artifacts and stories you leave behind? As I archive photos, report cards, and even my Eagle Scout project, I'm reflecting on how these pieces become threads in the tapestry of legacy—one that's bigger than ourselves and might someday inspire our kids and grandkids.
But the sweetest nugget comes from an unexpected lesson learned at Philmont back in 2015. Called to be the "priesthood accompanist," I quickly realized that my piano skills were about as raw as they come—imagine poking through hymns on a keyboard, surrounded by leaders and feeling the pressure mount! Yet amid the stress, something beautiful unfolded: a tender mercy and a reminder that our Heavenly Parents know us intimately, anticipate our needs, and offer love even in our most awkward moments.
This episode isn't just a trip down memory lane—it's an invitation. If you've never asked God how He feels about you, take a few minutes this week and try it. I believe He wants you to know. And before your day ends, consider: who around you needs a little chocolate cake, or maybe just a reminder that they're deeply loved?

This week, I’m joined by Sarah as we dive deep into the idea of “life as a test.” Why does this phrase feel so heavy, and is there a better way to view our existence? We wrestle with gospel culture, expectations, and the pressure to get everything “right”—from church checklists to phrases like “multiply and replenish the earth.” Is test really the wrong word for what we’re doing here, and how much does accountability play in our growth?
But the real heart of our conversation is about purpose, influence, and agency. Is our purpose a single, narrow goal—or does it change and expand throughout our lives? Sarah and I explore how the sweet nuggets of gospel living emerge not from passing tests, but from personal development, becoming, and enriching others’ lives. Whether it’s through talents, kindness, or simply “being,” we look for new language and perspectives that bring hope instead of pressure.
Come along for this honest exchange, and let’s rethink what fulfillment and growth mean in our journey of faith. If you’ve ever struggled with feeling “enough” or wondered if your impact mattered, this episode is for you.

This week, I'm digging into the tricky world of decision-making, and I want to know—how do you decide if you’ve made the “right” choice? Whether you’re choosing where to live, what glasses to buy, or reflecting on the monumental choices faced by the Mormon pioneers crossing the plains, these moments shape our lives in profound ways. Join me as I wrestle with how we balance faith, stewardship, and personal revelation when the future is always unpredictable.
In this episode, we talk about the power (and the trap!) of second-guessing ourselves and explore why you actually can’t ever know for sure what “might have been.” From personal stories about careers and optometrist visits, to powerful gospel examples like Adam and Eve, I’ll share why I believe that the best way forward is to simply decide your decision was the right one—and then learn all you can from it.
If you’ve ever wondered if you took the right fork in the road, I invite you to listen in and see why sometimes, it’s not about choosing perfectly—it’s about moving forward with purpose, embracing your choices, and trusting that sweet gospel goodness is always ahead. If there’s a chocolate cake question (or decision!) you want discussed, send it my way.

This week on Chocolate Cake Bytes, I invite you to dive into the sweet and sometimes surprising layers of questions that shape our journey in the gospel. We’ll talk about the gifts we’re given—some churchy, some not so much—and how asking deep, meaningful questions can unlock new ways of seeing ourselves and drawing closer to Christ. I share a few of my favorite prompts and invite you to reflect: What’s something you’d have a hard time giving up if it meant getting closer to God? And what might be missing from our favorite stories in scripture?
Whether you’re curious about the process of forgiveness, want to explore what it truly means to “deny yourself of all ungodliness,” or just love thinking about what it would have been like to be present during pivotal moments of Christ’s life and ministry, this episode is for you. Plus, I share a special assignment for your gospel study that might just change the way you read scripture. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts and the questions you’re wrestling with this week—reach out, and let’s make our study (and this podcast) even better together!

This week, I'm diving into a topic that I wrestle with often—what does it really mean to repent, and how does it connect to forgiveness? After wrapping up my teaching term with Pathways Institute, where we explored Neil Anderson's "The Divine Gift of Forgiveness," I share some personal stories (including a playful moment with my daughter and some very green food coloring) and get raw about what forgiveness looks like from both a parental and a divine perspective. Does repentance earn us God's love or acceptance? Are we using the right words when we talk about forgiveness?
Join me as I sort through these questions in real time—how does repentance change us, not just our actions but our hearts? And what, if anything, does it do to our relationship with God? If you’ve ever wondered about the connection between daily repentance and feeling qualified (not just "worthy") to live in God’s presence, this episode is for you.
I want to know what you think—maybe you have answers or questions of your own. Email me at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com, and let’s keep the conversation going. In the meantime, let’s focus on making daily repentance part of our journey and stay more connected to our divine heavenly parentage.

This week, I share a slice-of-life experience fresh from becoming a grandfather—again. What do you do when the day unfolds in unexpected ways, and how do you decide what kind of experience you'll have? From waiting in the hospital with a bag of burgers to navigating the shifting schedules of new parents and growing families, I found myself reflecting on how we can choose our reactions, no matter what comes our way.
The heart of this episode is about agency—the power to select the experience we want, whether that's a day filled with joy, frustration, learning, or even a bit of introspection. I open up about supporting my daughter during her baby's arrival and embracing the role of quiet, unobtrusive encouragement. It's a reminder that sometimes the sweetest moments come from simply being present, letting others shine, and celebrating their journeys.
So as you dive into this week, consider what kind of day you want to have. Whether it's amazing or hard, there's goodness to be found in deciding for yourself how you'll experience each moment. And maybe, as the episode wraps up, you'll think of someone who could use a chocolate cake—or at least some kindness—today.

This week, I dive into a question that’s sparked discussion both in my YSA Institute class and in my own study: What’s the real difference between doctrine, policy, practice, and commandments—and why does it matter for our faith? From stories in the Old Testament to examples drawn straight out of modern Latter-day Saint experience, I explore why putting our confidence in eternal, unchangeable truths (doctrine!) can create a stronger, more resilient foundation for our spiritual life.
If you’ve ever wondered why certain commandments and practices shift with time, but some truths never do, this episode is for you. We talk about how policies and commandments—like dietary laws or Sabbath customs—are designed to highlight deeper doctrines that never change, such as God’s love for His children and the importance of caring for our bodies as temples of the Spirit. It’s all about helping you find peace and clarity when church practices inevitably evolve.
So as you refocus for a new month, let’s dig deep and build our faith on those simple, profound doctrines at the heart of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I want to hear your thoughts—how do you keep your foundation strong when everything else seems to shift? Let’s keep the conversation going and, of course, don’t forget to share some chocolate cake with someone who needs a little sweetness today.

In this reflective solo episode, Ken dives into the powerful idea that “nothing changes until something changes”—and that “something” is usually us. Drawing from personal experience, client conversations, and scriptural insight from the Book of Mormon about things to act and things to be acted upon, Ken challenges listeners to stop waiting for external circumstances, revelations, or perfect timing to transform their lives. Instead, he invites us to recognize the subtle “rules” we’ve accepted—beliefs that masquerade as obligations—and to question whether they truly serve us.
Ken explores how unexamined rules shape our behavior at work, at home, and in spiritual life. From the fear of appearing like a “job hopper,” to absorbing others’ stress by default, to believing church activity earns God’s love, he reveals how these stories can quietly limit our freedom and growth. The invitation is simple but profound: identify the rules you don’t have to follow, take ownership of who you want to become, and act accordingly—because the change you’re waiting for starts with you.

In this reflective and hope-filled episode, Ken reframes the notorious “Quitters Day” and the shame that can trail failed resolutions. Drawing from personal experiences and recent conversations with clients, he reminds listeners that missing goals does not equal being a failure. Your worth is intrinsic, permanent, and unearned—no checklist or timeline can add to or subtract from it.
Ken also widens the lens on what truly matters. From the passing of loved ones to the everyday stack of “should-read” books and never-ending bills, he illustrates how many of the pressures we carry simply aren’t ultimate. Borrowing a powerful thought—“I will kiss my wife a finite number of times”—he urges us to savor the present, learn from setbacks, and choose joy intentionally. Men are that they might have joy—so let’s have joy.

This week, we're diving into what it really means to be “created in the image of God”—and how that understanding could radically change the way you see yourself and your place in the world. I share insights from a powerful conversation with Bishop Kevin Foreman from the Harvest Church, where we explore the difference between believing in God and truly believing God. What if our divine identity isn’t just about how we look, but about our potential to be creators in our own right, mirroring the creativity of our Heavenly Father?
As we settle into the new year and think about our goals, I reflect on a story from comedian Brian Regan that flips the script on the phrase “I’m trying to…”—and suggests that we simply own our identities now, rather than waiting for some future achievement. Whether you want to be a speaker, an author, or anything else, you don’t have to wait for someone else’s approval to claim that identity.
So as you listen, I invite you to consider: What identity are you putting off until “someday,” and how would your life change if you made it your present reality? Join me for some thought-provoking questions, a little self-reflection, and as always, the sweet goodness we discover when we dig deeper into the gospel of Jesus Christ.

This week on Chocolate Cake Bytes, we’re diving deep into the sweet (and sometimes complicated) process of repentance and forgiveness. Have you ever thought of repentance as a checklist or as a punishment for your mistakes? You're not alone—and we get real about these common detours on the road to true forgiveness. Join me and Justin as we unpack stories, both humorous and vulnerable, from our own lives and dig into what it really means to repent, forgive, and even ask for apologies.
We wrestle with questions that might hit close to home, like: Is it possible to forgive when you never get an apology? What happens if you hurt someone and have no idea you did? And do we ever truly check all the boxes when we try to repair relationships—or does the process ask something deeper of us? Along the way, you'll hear about exploding bathroom firecrackers, awkward moments with Alexa, and the hilarious chaos that comes from trying to announce life-changing news to family.
If you’ve ever struggled with guilt, humility, or letting go of a grudge, this episode invites you to consider repentance and forgiveness from a fresh, gospel-centered perspective. So, grab a slice of cake, settle in, and let’s get honest about why the atonement—not just our own efforts—makes all the difference.

This week, we’re diving deep into something that sounds simple at first—knowledge vs. wisdom—but turns out to be a lot messier (and way more fun) than you’d guess. Have you ever found yourself tangled up between what you know and what you can actually apply? Annette and I swap stories about teachers who made facts come alive, misremembered family rules, and the strange ways history gets told (and retold) depending on where you grew up. Do you remember who made you fall in love with learning? Or maybe hate it? Yeah, we go there.
But what really sparks today’s episode is a question that the Book of Mormon teases out: What’s the difference between teaching knowledge and teaching wisdom—and how can you know what’s actually true when everyone has a different version of the facts? Annette drops insightful questions about perspective, lived experience, and the natural tendency to chase after certainty even when more curiosity could serve us better. We talk Civil War history, women’s rights, and the wild twists of “truth” depending on your lens.
If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s even possible to teach wisdom, or how to stay open and curious when it seems everyone else wants you to “pick a side,” you’ll want to listen in. Start the New Year with us as we wrestle with curiosity, certainty, and the invitation to see beyond the stories we tell ourselves. What do you think—can wisdom really be taught, or is it all about staying curious together? Let’s talk about it.

This week, we’re talking about how to create the most powerful shift you can make when kicking off a new year: your identity. In this special New Year’s episode, I share the exact process that’s helped me move out of the “passenger seat” and into the driver’s seat of my own career and life. We’ll break down the 12 illusions that secretly dictate how we think, act, and even judge our supposed “failures”—and I’ll challenge you to question whether concepts like failure, shame, and need actually exist, or if you’ve just agreed to them out of habit.
You’ll discover a step-by-step ritual for releasing the habits, fears, and self-criticism you’re finally ready to leave in 2025—and replacing them with the positive qualities and intentions you want to live by in 2026. I get real about how this is not a thought experiment, but a transformative practice you can do right now, at midnight or anytime you’re ready to reset. From burning up your old beliefs (sometimes literally!) to reading your new identity statements every day, this is how you set your intentions in motion and start becoming the future version of yourself you actually want to be.
If you’re tired of having life just “happen” to you and are ready for a fresh start, join me for this reflective and actionable episode. There are no guests and no outside links mentioned this week—just you, me, and a powerful invitation to take control of your story for 2026.

This week on Chocolate Cake Bytes, I’m inviting you into a conversation that could transform your entire year ahead. As 2025 winds down and we glance into the promise of 2026, I’m sharing a straightforward process that’s shifted my own mindset about goals—and it might just do the same for you. If, like me, you've had a complicated history with goal-setting, let’s take a new approach together. Instead of getting bogged down in “how,” let’s focus on where we are, where we want to go, and what really matters.
You’ll hear me unpack the three simple but powerful questions I ask myself at the end of each year: What are my biggest wins? Where did I fall short? And, most importantly, what lessons did I pick up along the way? I’ll show you how to move beyond just listing goals, to categorizing your weaknesses—so you can decide which ones to turn into strengths, which to delegate, and which to simply let go. We’ll build a vision for 2026 that’s grounded not just in ambition, but in alignment with your deepest values.
So if you’re ready for 2026 to be truly incredible—and maybe even outshine what you’ve accomplished before—grab a notebook (or your favorite app) and join me for this week’s actionable episode. Let's turn your setbacks into setups, your lessons into leverage, and create a roadmap for a year worth celebrating.

Are you ready to wrap up another year? This week on the podcast, I'm reflecting on what it means to approach a new year and asking some deep questions about our understanding of the plan of salvation. We've all heard lessons about the "plan of the adversary" versus the plan of happiness, but what if we've misunderstood what Satan's alternate plan actually was? I'm diving into what the scriptures really say—and don't say—about agency, force, and the adversary's true motives.
Join me as I throw out a fresh idea: what if the adversary’s original proposal wasn’t about forcing us to make the right choices, but rather about simply changing the rules, making it seem like everything would be okay no matter what we did? How does that perspective change the way we approach temptation and discernment today? If the enemy’s greatest tool has always been subtle deception—making wrong seem almost right—what does that mean for us as disciples trying not to be deceived?
This episode is an open invitation to question, ponder, and discuss. I’d love to hear your thoughts—what do you think about the idea of “The Other Plan”? And how do you make sure you’re not being deceived? Tune in for a thought-provoking conversation and let’s keep discovering the sweet nuggets of gospel goodness together.

This week on Chocolate Cake Bytes, I get real about one of the trickiest questions in our faith: If God truly loves us, why doesn't He just fix things? You know those moments—the ones filled with heartbreak, pain, or just plain unfairness—when you've pleaded for a miracle and wondered why it didn't come. I share some of my personal journey through a year of growth and challenges, and invite you into a conversation about God’s love, agency, and the lessons hidden in our hardest experiences.
Drawing from stories like my sister Annette's battle with a traumatic brain injury, I wrestle with the tough reality: sometimes painful things happen that have nothing to do with our choices. Why does God allow that kind of suffering? Is agency the only answer—or is there something deeper at play? What if the purpose of life isn’t comfort, but growth and connection that reaches beyond mortality?
Let's dig into what it means to be loved by a God who lets us struggle, and how those struggles might actually be preparing us for something greater. I’d love to hear your thoughts—do you agree, disagree, or have your own insight? Email me at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com, and let’s keep the conversation going. This week, we kick off the Christmas season and get personal about Thanksgiving traditions. What did you do to celebrate, and what makes your holiday unique? I'd love to hear what makes Thanksgiving special.
But the heart of this week's conversation is an exploration of "relentless pursuit"—not just God's pursuit of us, but what it would mean if we relentlessly pursued a relationship with Jesus Christ ourselves? Through a look at the story of Lazarus, we can learn the nuances of Christ's compassion and presence in our struggles. And what might change in our everyday lives if we truly made the Savior our focus?
As the Christmas season begins, let's focus on a deeper, more intentional pursuit of the sweet goodness that comes from living the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In this week’s episode of Chocolate Cake Bytes, Ken welcomes back fan-favorite guest Kammi for a soulful and thought-provoking conversation on fear—what it is, why it matters, and how it shows up in our everyday lives. Can you really “fear not” when scripture and biology seem to be at odds? Together, they dig into the language and interpretation of “fear not” in the Bible, exploring how translation and context shape our spiritual understanding.
As they unpack the difference between fear as anxiety and fear as respect, Ken and Kammi share real-life experiences, from missed flights to parenting pitfalls, where fear plays backseat driver to faith. Is fear always the enemy, or can it be one of God’s gifts—designed for your protection, yet gently nudged aside in moments of trust and personal growth? They dive into agency, trust, prayer, and the messy reality of spiritual life, reminding us that God’s promises persist even when our best-laid plans go sideways.
Join the discussion as they consider whether fear is meant to motivate or simply signal when it’s time to choose faith over anxiety. Listen in for insightful stories, practical takeaways, and a few laughs—plus a touching testimony from Kammi about finding hope and wholeness in the hardest moments. This episode might just help you rethink your relationship with fear and discover a more lasting, empowering path forward.

This week on Chocolate Cake Bytes, we visit with Kammi for an episode that will have you rethinking the language of self-growth and spirituality. Dive in as we untangle the world’s definitions from sacred doctrine and explore how everyday words can be spiritual linchpins—or minefields. With a blend of humor, personal stories, and thoughtful analysis, we'll consider how the Savior remains at the heart of true abundance and authentic living—even when the words sound the same but mean something altogether different.
What if some of our favorite self-help buzzwords have hidden implications? Could we be missing the Savior in our drive for growth? Tune in to be challenged, surprised, and maybe even inspired to ask: Where is God in the words I use and the path I’m choosing?

In this week’s episode, Ken dives solo into a sweet subject—faith. Is faith really just about feelings, or have we misunderstood what it means to believe? Drawing from scripture, chocolate milk cravings, and even some TEDx talk wisdom, Ken Williams challenges the idea that faith is just a warm fuzzy sensation, inviting us to reconsider how we approach the things we hope for and pursue.
Through playful analogies—like journeys for discounted Halloween candy and the arduous process of finding the right TEDx stage—Ken explores the practical, everyday acts of faith we often don’t notice. What happens when things don’t go according to plan? Is disappointment evidence that our faith is misplaced, or could it be a sign that belief is more about action than emotion?
Listen in for fresh questions and unexpected answers as Ken Williams helps reset your expectations about faith, belief, and divine direction. If you’ve ever felt doubt or frustration, this episode will help you find hope (and maybe even the world’s best chocolate milk) where you least expect it.

This week on Chocolate Cake Bytes, Brett returns to join Ken Williams for an episode that flips the script—in more ways than one! Brett takes the hosting reins, inviting Ken to step into the hot seat as they explore what it means to truly trust in God, even when life spins out in all directions. Using the story of infamous football player Johnny Manziel as a jumping-off point, Brett draws a powerful parallel: no matter how badly we think we've messed up, we always have a “rich Dad” to fall back on in our Heavenly Father.
Ken and Brett push past the surface, digging into the hidden rules and limiting beliefs that shape our lives—often without us realizing. Why do we hold ourselves back from asking for what we really want? How do we let go of trying to have everything figured out before we leap? The conversation is packed with real-life experiences, candid confessions, and some game-changing perspectives on faith, prayer, and letting yourself want what you really want.
Join them for a refreshingly honest conversation that will leave you reconsidering the rules you live by—and inspire you to embrace a more abundant, joyful, and faith-filled way of moving through life. If you’ve ever felt boxed in by expectations—yours or someone else’s—this episode is for you!

This week on Chocolate Cake Bytes, Ken brings his friend Kaelynn to the table for a candid, no-holds-barred look at suffering, trust, and divine purpose. Are we meant to suffer? Is there a master plan that pain fits into, or are we simply navigating a messy, beautiful world full of unexpected twists and lessons? Ken and Kaelynn challenge the classic, often uncomfortable idea that “everything happens for a reason,” sharing personal stories and wrestling with hard questions about faith, control, and letting go.
They dig into what it really means to “become like Christ”—is it about following rules, or is it about embracing growth through change and hardship? Kaelynn opens up about her mission, losing the use of her legs, and learning to rely on God in ways she never imagined, while Ken recounts a family crisis that tested every ounce of trust he had in a bigger plan. Packed with warmth, wit, and wisdom, this episode invites you to rethink your own approach to adversity.
Join Ken and Kaelynn for a conversation that doesn’t shy away from life’s rough edges. In this week’s episode, Ken takes us on a thoughtful journey through one of the longest—and perhaps most overlooked—allegories in the Book of Mormon: the olive tree in Jacob 5. Drawing from a recent discussion in his stake, Ken dives into the symbolism behind pruning branches and what it means for our own efforts to grow and improve.
Can we cut away all our bad habits at once? Ken doesn’t think so—and neither does the allegory. He explores how lasting change happens gradually, and why we should give ourselves grace as we move, step by step, toward becoming more like Christ. If you’ve ever wrestled with goals or felt the pressure to be perfect, this episode will offer some sweet reassurance and a fresh perspective on what real progress looks like.

Ken shares insights from his own experiences preparing TEDx talks, connecting the dots between research, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and our everyday interactions.
Tune in as Ken examines the ripple effect of kindness: from the giver to the receiver, and out to the entire community. This week on Chocolate Cake Bytes, Ken shares a simple yet powerful thought that might just change your perspective: nothing changes until you change. Drawing inspiration from a recent conversation with a mentor, Ken explores what it truly means to not just do something different—but to become someone different. Can transformation really start with something as simple as pretending to be the person you want to become?
Ken invites us to consider the subtle art of "acting as if." Whether it's deepening our spiritual focus through daily habits or facing life's many transitions, sometimes all it takes to spark genuine change is to step into a new version of ourselves—even if it feels a little awkward at first. Are we already more capable of change than we think?
Tune in for a bite-sized episode that's packed with sweet motivation and practical insights about personal growth, spiritual development, and how pretending can sometimes lead to the most authentic changes of all.

In this week’s episode, Ken takes us on an unexpected journey that starts with a simple thought about colors—blue in particular—and leads us into a deeper conversation about the language we use to describe our experiences, especially those tied to the gospel. What happens when a culture doesn’t have a word for a concept, like the Himba people and the color blue? How does that shape what we’re even able to see or feel?
Ken explores the limits and power of language, drawing on everything from Portuguese idioms to unique expressions in American Sign Language, and then connects it all to spiritual understanding. Are there gospel principles or divine experiences we simply don’t have words for? And if so, how could that shape or even limit our faith? As Ken ponders the phrase “your days are known” from church history, he invites us to consider whether our spiritual vocabulary might be missing something essential.
Tune in for a thoughtful and intriguing solo episode that will leave you questioning the words you use and the experiences you’ve never been able to fully describe. What divine truths might await if we open ourselves to concepts we can’t yet name?

In this week’s episode, Ken is flying solo and digging deep into the sweet—and sometimes challenging—topic of little childlike faith. With the hustle and bustle of August on his mind—from family, church activities, and even preparing for his first TEDx talk—Ken reflects on what it truly means to approach life and faith with the trusting heart of a child.
Have you ever wondered what could change if you believed, without question, that things are working out exactly as they should? Ken unpacks his own struggles and insights about embracing a child’s faith: not naive optimism, but the deep assurance that God’s plans are always better than our own. He poses thought-provoking questions: What if we believed we deserved miracles? What if we simply trusted, like a child, that our requests would be honored in the best possible way? Tune in as Ken invites you to rethink what real faith is and dares you to imagine your life transformed by a little child’s perspective.

This week, we are by Annette for a heartfelt (and often hilarious) conversation about shame, blame, and the messy journey of self-improvement.
Annette shares personal stories—ranging from gouging the family van as a teenager to her unforgettable Haagen Dazs cravings during pregnancy—that show how making mistakes really is part of the plan. Together, Ken and Annette dig into why we’re so quick to feel bad when we fall short, how our religious and cultural backgrounds shape our expectations of “perfection,” and whether shame actually helps us grow or just keeps us stuck.
Is it possible to strive for better without beating ourselves up? What should true repentance and real change look like? And most importantly… does eating too many desserts really make you a “bad” person? (Spoiler: probably not—in fact, you might get an argument in favor of extra dessert here.)
Filled with warmth, wisdom, banter, and plenty of cake talk, this episode invites you to rethink what it really means to change, forgive yourself, and give yourself a little grace along the way. Let’s dive in!

In this episode of Chocolate Cake Bytes, I continue an open and honest conversation with Brett about the challenge of embracing our divine identity and living authentically. We dive into how fear and self-judgment so often keep us from pursuing our real interests and promptings, and discuss how the opinions of others can hold us back from becoming the "five talent servants" we're meant to be.
Brett shares personal experiences about years spent putting limits on himself, whether it was hesitating to try acting or feeling he needed to fit a certain mold. We talk through the difference between living fearfully—trying to control outcomes—and living faithfully, willing to take bold action and trust that things will work out. I offer some stories from my own life about questioning decisions, overcoming the desire to “do things the right way,” and learning to see supposed impulses as spiritual promptings.
Together, we reflect on the idea that God does not want us to be clones or to play it safe, but to become the best version of ourselves—embracing our quirks, creative sides, and differences. The conversation ends with both of us committing to act on those inspired promptings and to give ourselves permission to expand into the unique individuals God created us to be.

This week, we step outside—literally—to escape the summer heat, joined by Brett for an honest, thought-provoking conversation under the open sky. We explore some big questions: What is our purpose in life? When is our "mission" really complete? And what does it mean to truly fulfill the "measure of our creation"?
Using personal stories, gospel perspectives, and a good bit of humor, we'll dig into the pressures we put on ourselves to find a grand life purpose, unpack the weight of cultural expectations, and rethink familiar parables—like the parable of the talents—through a new lens. We also candidly tackle topics like overcoming negativity, reclaiming childlike creativity, and embracing our divine potential—whether that means picking up a new talent, switching careers, or just giving ourselves permission to dream again.
If you’ve ever wrestled with questions about your worth, your path, or how to use your gifts for good, pull up a chair (or step outside into the sunshine with us!) for a conversation that’s as real as it is uplifting. Sometimes, just being here—just existing—is the sweetest part of all.

This week I’m sitting down with my good friend Brett for a conversation I’ve been itching to have—about faith. Not the easy, Instagram-quote kind of faith, but the gritty, “what do I do when I have zero evidence things will work out?” sort of faith. I’ll share a story about a woman who waited five years for her husband with nothing but hope to hold onto, and Brett opens up about what it’s really like to act as if your prayers are already answered—even when it feels like you’re just waiting in the dark.
We get real about what it means to trust God, how we wrestle with doubt, and why sometimes letting go of our own plans is the only way to make room for miracles. There are a few twists—like what kitchen appliances and TEDx talks have to do with trusting God (I promise, it’ll make sense!)—and we even challenge the classic definitions of faith you’ve probably heard your whole life.
If you’ve ever wondered, “How do I hold on when nothing seems to be happening?”—or if you’re searching for a new way to look at your journey—this is an episode you don’t want to miss. So stick around; the answers might surprise you.

But probably not the way you're thinking about it.
What if you take a "divine sign" as a reminder that you are loved? That you are of great worth?
And you can choose your sign.
Hearts. Unicorns, Red wagons, Purple trucks. A clock that says 11:11.
Doesn't matter.
Just use it to remember how deeply loved you are.
Because you are.

You may know people (or even be one) who choose a word to focus on for the year.
What if you outgrow the word during the year?
What if you have a hard time thinking of a word to direct your entire year?
What if your word is discouraging rather than inspring?
This year, I'm trying something new--I'm coming up with a word of the day. Each day, I'll consider what I have ahead of me to accomplish, and I think about how I want to be as I work during the day.
Then, in the spirit of daily repentence, I can adjust, refocus, and re-align from day to day.
I'm curious about your thoughts.

In today's episode, host Ken Williams is joined by returning guest Julia from Southern California. Together, they dive into the transformative power of aligning one’s life with divine will, discussing how being open to inspiration and practicing daily repentance can lead to meaningful success and positive experiences.
Julia shares her insights on viewing repentance not as a punitive measure but as a means of realigning with God to enhance our daily lives. They explore the importance of agency, the value of aligning personal desires with a higher power, and the personal growth that stems from trusting in divine plans. Tune in for an episode filled with thoughtful reflections on faith, personal responsibility, and the continuous journey towards spiritual alignment.

First-time co-host Brett is a member of my church congregation. Recently, we were talking about faith, and I asked him to come on the podcast to share some of his insights.
Something he said during a Sunday lesson caught my attention: He explained that when he truly feels like he is demonstrating faith, he can just belive that 'it is done."

What kind of plan would you create if you were in charge of everything?
Would you make it impossible for your children to return to live with you? Or would you set things up so that they had every opportunity to do things, to get things right?
I believe that our Heavenly Parents want us to return to live with them; therefore, things are working out in our favor. Things will work out.

When we're feeling low, we tend to isolate ourselves. When others feel low, they do the same thing.
We put ourselves in a box. We don't let anyone else in.
When you're struggling, get out of the box. Open it up. Let the light in. Let others know your struggles.
Get out of the box.

Last week opened a new perspective for me regarding Mercy.
And, after giving a talk in church last Sunday, I've been thinking a lot more about mercy vs. justice.
And I've concluded that we don't need to concern ourselves with justice.
Ever.
That's already been resolved. It's taken care of. It's complete. Not our problem.
Mercy, however, IS our problem.
So let's focus there.

And he didn't teach me what he learned. Just that he better understood faith.
I have had a hard time understanding how to distinguish belief from faith.
So, Annette and I tackle this one.

This week, Brendan joins again to discuss what "God's Plan" for us is.
We discover that there is a big picture "God's plan" and a nitty-gritty detailed "God's Plan."
We talk about the difference and how we can move forward understanding the distinction between the two

We recently talked about expectations we can (should?) have of God.
And, we also have talked about whether we have to like God's plan for us.
And then Annette wanted to push back on what it means for God to have a plan for us.
So, here we are. Annette and Brendan discuss their opinions on God's plan. What it means, and how it relates to expectations we can (should?) have of Him.

Life is HARD. And then you die. (OR someone close to you does.)
Brendan raises the question, do I have to love God's plan for me?
We can assume His plan is perfect.
We can assume His plan will take us where we need to go.
We can assume His plan will teach us what we need to be and do.
But do we have to like it? Do we have to enjoy the process?
This is our take. The short answer is no. The long answer is no. So how do we survive it?

No, not really. At this point, I'm more focused on Becoming than Achieving.
What do you want to let go? How were you last year that you no longer want to be?
And what will you be instead?
I share an exercise I went through at the end of the year to mark my Becoming journey. I'll update you soon.

After the October, 2023 General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I heard a lot of talk about President Nelson's talk, "Think Celestial."
Some was from raving fans.

We are commanded to "Be ye therefore perfect." But perfection will elude us for the duration of our lives. We also have been taught that we learn from our own experience.
Thinking of how I have learned many things, my most poignant lessons come from my mistakes. From getting things wrong.
So, is it OK to make mistakes? Is it OK that we are sinners? or should we set our personal bar at a level that perfection is the only acceptable outcome?
What is wrong with allowing us to be sinners?
I would love to hear your thoughts. Share them with me at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com
I think many times we imagine that "Men are that they might have joy" somehow supersedes "There must needs be opposition in all things."
I don't think so. I think opposition is a natural part of this (and maybe even the next) life.
What do you think?

We're back with Annette, favorite sister and co-host!
A conversation we had in the car has become the focus of this week's topic: how should we approach Fence Laws?
A fence law is something that is designed to protect us and keep us safe, but has the potential of sidetracking us and focusing on the less important.
How have Fence Laws affected your relationship with the Savior?
This week, Kristi is back with her husband, Jeff.
Jeff is an advocate for the "Five Second Rule," where you act on thoughts, impressions, inspiration, or promptings within five seconds.
Otherwise, you might talk yourself out of doing something good.
Jeff teaches what the rule is and how it has changed his life.

While I was getting my private pilot license many years ago, I learned from Jim, my flight instructor, that I needed to trust my instruments.
"You can't trust your body. Your body will lie to you. You HAVE to trust your instruments. If you don't trust your instruments, you WILL die."
That sounded ominous. But it was true. It still is.
Fortunately, we have instruments--outside perspectives--that make it easier to know what to trust and believe.
Trust your instruments.

I recently recorded a digital fireside about Loving Yourself and Loving Others.
The thoughts that came up for me connected well with last week's discussion on accepting things as they are, so I thought I would share.
First, Love Yourself. Find out who you are, and embrace it.
That makes it easier to love others.
Yeah, that's a shortcut. So listen for more insights.
This week, we talk about how having imperfect bodies can affect our experience in this life.
Having unrealistic expectations can reduce our experience, and can intensify our dissatisfaction.

Favorite Co-host Annette, along with favorite co-host daughter, Allison, combine forces to discuss Faith and Certainty.
The relationship between faith, knowledge, and certainty is complex, so we spend a few minutes deconstructing what the difference is between faith and certainty
Who gets to decide whether something is "good" or "evil?"
Is a "bad" experience, if it makes us better, "bad," or is it "good?"
This week, Annette joins in the discussion to expand on what we think about Good and Evil, and whether EVERYTHING that is Good comes from God.

Favorite Co-host Annette brings an interesting comment: sometimes we make our own hard things become God's will.
Meaning that we decide that it is God's will that we experience specific hard things.

Jen has been a member of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square for about 10 years.
She is not a spokesperson for the Choir. She does not represent them or their viewpoints.
However, she has had some amazing experiences.
This week we share some of her experiences over the past decade. Is it really THAT amazing to be in "The Choir?"
Thanks for listening!
Favorite Co-host Annette is back, with her favorite partner and husband, Bary.
What does it mean to engage in daily repentance? We hear this from our Church leaders, but I'm not sure that we spend time considering what that means or how it looks in our daily routine.
This week, Bary, Annette, and I talk about repentance in a way that maybe we haven't considered before.
We'd love to hear your feedback or questions at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com
After a quick summary of my life, we address suffering in advance.
How many times do we diminish our present experience because of an anticipated future experience?
For myself, I do this all the time.
And I don't think it serves me well.
What if we just live in the present and let the future take care of itself?

Sometimes we worry about making the wrong decision
What if the only wrong decision is no decision at all?
I'm on vacation and not in my normal studio so the sound quality is different. I make no apologizes.
I DECIDED to record some of my thoughts.
Not to decide is to decide. And my favorite quote I heard today is "Contemplate the price paid for inaction."
Make it a good week! More to come next week.
This week, we examine some of the rules that we have been following--maybe for our entire lives.
Why? Where did our rules come from? Are they serving us?
If so, GREAT! Keep following them.
If not, GREAT! Change them.
We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Email ken@chocolatecakebytes.com
Long-time family friend, Elder (Kyler) Lopez, who recently began a service mission in the Indianapolis, Indiana area, joins us to dig deep into what it means to serve.
D&C 4 is, we think, the only place in Scripture that encourages us to serve with our "heart, might, mind, and strength." As the "missionary scripture," we often consider that type of service in a missionary context, but it's also very meaningful to consider all kinds of service through those four lenses.
Join the discussion as we talk about the nuances of serving with Heart, Might, Mind, and Strength. And please share ideas and feedback at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com
I'm one of the Elders Quorum instructors in my ward, and this Sunday, we're talking about Elder Uchtdorf's talk, "Jesus Christ is the Strength of Youth."
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2022/10/12uchtdorf?lang=eng
I've come up with a few questions that I'm asking myself about how I can deepen my connection with the Savior.

In talking about this episode, Brendan (who refers to himself as the "Prodigal Son") claims to know how many times I have misspoken in the past 70 episodes (or at least the first 20 that he has listened to)
Brendan and I also talk about differences of faith and our responsibility to support ourselves and each other in our respective faith experiences.
And according to Brendan, I've only been wrong four times. (Maybe five)
When the Church changes policies or practices, sometimes we feel like the doctrine we thought we knew has changed.
But has the doctrine changed?
Doctrine can be tricky, because there is "Church Doctrine" (I think of this as "Church policy") and True Doctrine (Never-changing Truth)
This week Annette and I explore Policy versus Doctrine
What is a relationship? And what is a relationship with God?
This has been on my mind lately. Listen in as I talk through some ideas.
We normally hear something like this when we're dealing with something negative. But is it true? Is there a reason we're experiencing something difficult?
Co-host Annette and I explore the many tentacles of this attempt at sharing peace, and we're not sure that EVERYTHING happens for a reason.
What do you think? Share your ideas with me at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com
Adam Miller has been making the podcast circuit lately, talking about his new book, "Original Grace."
I am a few chapters in, and already, I've been thinking that maybe I could be thinking about some things with more grace.
This week, I share a few of my thoughts about what it means to receive the grace of Christ. I'm learning that I don't know nearly as much as I had assumed.
We're on a roll talking about Missions, so we spend this episode talking to Carissa, who had the unique opportunity to serve on Temple Square.
The mission boundary is Temple Square. One city block. But the reach of the Temple Square missionaries is literally without boundaries and borders.
Listen in as Carissa shares some of her mission experiences.
My nephew Brig was a COVID mission casualty. He was informed after just six months as a missionary, that his service was ending early, and he would not have the opportunity to continue.
How does a young missionary deal with that?
Brig shares his perspective and some lessons with us
We may not admit it, but the unspoken hierarchy of missionary service is:
Best: Foreign mission/foreign Language
Then: Foreign mission/native language
Next: Domestic mission, foreign language
Then: Domestic mission, same language, and
Finally: Service/alternative/non-traditional missions
Why do we think this?
This week we talk to Katelyn (Young Performing Missionary at Nauvoo) and her mom, fan favorite co-host, Annette to discuss these culturally-imposed Mission Hierarchies.
Do you agree? Have a different experience? Share with us at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com
I don't know about you, but my life is hard sometimes.
I have to cover other people's responsibilities at work.
I have callings that stretch me in uncomfortable ways.
I have conversations or relationships that can be difficult.
And guess what? Normally, in my experience, anyway, things end up being not as hard as I imagined they would be.
So when your only option is to go through (because avoiding it won't work), go through with courage. And then when you learn something, be kind to yourself for not learning the lesson sooner. Or better. Or faster.
You deserve to be kind to you.
I love this question!
There are so many things that I think I know, and I think it can be valuable to at least ponder this question.
"How does what I know get in the way of what I don't know?"
Liz Wiseman is an author and teacher about leadership. Magnifying versus Diminishing leaders.

What happens when a couple of guys start having a conversation with no agenda?
We end up talking about how we're not very good at journaling.
Yeah, I didn't see that one coming either.
Meet Greg, new (and somewhat reluctant) co-host, as we start talking about stuff and end up deciding that we should challenge ourselves to better document significant things in our lives.
Feedback on how we can do better? Let me know at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com
This week, we listen to a fireside I did a couple of months ago for Our Turtle House.
I believe it's more important to Be something than to Do things.
As we BECOME who God wants us to be, we naturally DO things that we should do. And sometimes, I believe, God uses those things to bless the lives of others.
Co-host Harrison taught Elders Quorum last Sunday and started by asking "What is love?"
I loved the question and invited him to continue the discussion.
So, what is Love? Share your thoughts with us at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com
We're supposed to be completely honest in all of our dealings, right?
But what about when telling the truth will be unnecessary? or harmful? Or illegal?
Mark and I explore options that might exist when being completely truthful might not be a great idea.
God required that Gideon reduce the size of his army to a mere 300 people.
This was so that God could show His power.
Where is he doing this in our lives? Where might we feel like the bulk of our support has vanished, and how can we recognize the hand of the Lord in these instances?
Imagine your feelings as a number line. Zero is neutral.
I think that if you're capable of feeling "bad: (which is really "uncomfortable")) at a -3, you can only feel "good" at a +3.
If you're afraid to feel uncomfortable, aren't you also afraid to feel too positive?
This week, it's just me sharing some of my thoughts I've been having over the past few weeks.
Thanks for listening. You can reach me at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com. I love hearing from you!
"You have to feel it to heal it."
I think there's truth in that. Having "bad" feelings (not really bad, but uncomfortable feelings) is a part of our life.
But what about "Men are that they might have joy"?
Yeah. That's true. But we're not supposed to have joy ALL THE TIME. There's a time for happy and a time for sad.
Listen as Eddison, Allison, and I talk through when and why we should feel our feelings.
Family friend Catie (who is Latter-day Saint Friendly, but not a member herself) raised an interesting question.
What if my blood relatives aren't people that I want around in my life? What does that mean for "forever families?"
In this episode, we talk about ways that we can navigate some of those complicated relationships that--at least as we see them now--we don't want to have for eternity.
We are commanded to be a peacemaker, but what does that mean?
How can we be a peacemaker without sacrificing our own needs and resorting to people pleasing?
Is there a way to follow the command and be true to ourselves?
This week, we talk with Whitney (Sister) Durtschi, who is currently serving as a Service Missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Her experience from preparing for her mission, to receiving her call, to loving her mission has been a journey in learning how God is aware of His children.
Listen in to learn part of Whitney's story
Life is hard.
Sometimes we're confronted with mourning with others who mourn, or comforting those who stand in need of comfort.
But interacting with someone who is needing comfort can be...well...uncomfortable.
How do we put off our own discomfort and truly comfort others?
In an unrelated but totally related conversation with Carissa, she asked a question that tied in perfectly with last week's conversation with Heidi. So I told her to stop talking so we could record the conversation.
Having "But If Not" faith may be a next step for some of us. What does that look like, and what does it mean?
This is our attempt to address those questions...and more!
During a Family Home Evening lesson, favorite niece Heidi made a very insightful comment about prayer.
As I tend to do, I asked her if we could have a more in-depth conversation and record it for the podcast.
She's a recently-returned missionary, and hasn't learned to say "no" yet, so here is our chat.
We are instructed to "Counsel with the Lord," and for some of us, that has meant "Ask the Lord's opinion" or "Get the Lord's direction" for all of our major decisions.
But not all decision are major, and what are the drawbacks or risks to counseling (or NOT counseling) with the Lord on smaller or less significant matters?
And how do we make a decision when there isn't necessarily a "right" or "wrong" decision to be made?
What does it mean to "systematically include the Lord in your development?"
I'm not one who prays to get inspiration for each choice I make on a daily basis, but instead, I tend to act in a responsible manner, hoping to do the best thing for myself and others.
Elder Clark Gilbert addresses this in General Conference: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2021/10/16gilbert?lang=eng
I've been pondering how I can systematically involve the Lord in my development. I would love to hear your thoughts, too.
Grandma Jan, my mother-in-law, passed away a couple of weeks ago, giving me a front row seat to how different people grieve.
What does it take to give yourself (or others) the space to properly grieve?
The first stage of grief is denial.
When does having and exercising faith and hope cross over into being in denial, and not allowing you to move through the grief process?
I haven't figured this one out yet, so I'm asking more questions than I'm answering. But I'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback.
Reach me at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com
This week, I make an attempt to talk about beliefs.
What are they, why do we have them, and are they based on anything tangible?
For example, how can you and I have vastly different beliefs about the same "truth?"
I don't know all the answers, but I share some thoughts about why I believe.
Setting goals can be a little bit scary and a little bit intimidating. It's not always easy to decide and commit to doing something bigger than we've ever done before, and if we're not careful, we open ourselves up to beating ourselves up a LOT for missing the mark.
This week we chat with Geoff (Brother Brigham) who has a different take on setting goals...with faith.
I learned some new things that I will start using as I set my next goals.
Thanks for listening!
It's a few weeks after the new year, and statistically, your New Year's resolution is probably broken by now.
Since we're not good at changing overnight, and I'm still the flawed, imperfect, mistake-maker today that I was yesterday, how should I handle when I mess up?
This week, listen in as I share some observations about how to approach making mistakes and moving on.
"Men are that they might have joy." So why is it a problem to be positive all the time?
Allison joins the conversation to talk about a listener request (Thanks Catie!), Toxic Positivity.
We discuss what it means, how we engage in toxic positivity, and what the consequences can be if we're not careful.
Thanks for listening! Please rate and review Chocolate Cake Bytes in your podcast platform.
A recent digital fireside got me thinking about ways that we can use our trials to become better...not bitter.
You can watch the entire fireside at https://youtu.be/JQSX8AqVqig
Or, listen here for my segment. Life is hard. I don't think it's meant to be any different way.
So, we can use our challenges to become who and how we should be...or not.
In my haste to get a new episode published, I think I re-uploaded a previous episode.
Probably because the message was SO important that I wanted you to hear it twice.
Or, I just messed it up.
Sorry 'bout that. Here's the real episode:
Life is hard sometimes, and it's supposed to be that way.
I've heard that our problems lie in our past and in our future, but our present? Well, that's the calm between the storms.
Listen in as I remind myself to be present.
Life is hard sometimes, and it's supposed to be that way.
I've heard that our problems lie in our past and in our future, but our present? Well, that's the calm between the storms.
Listen in as I remind myself to be present.
I grew up hating hearing about goals.
I'm still not sure I'm a fan, but I understand why...I think the traditional process of creating and reaching for goals is flawed.
What is realistic? And what do I do when I fall short?
I share a few thoughts about how I'm going to approach my goal setting this year.
I love cows.
Not for any reason, really, but cows have become a family mascot. An inside joke. So I feel joyful when I think of or see cows.
Do you have a mascot? Something that you can go to when you need a boost?
Life is hard. It's meant to be great and not-great all at the same time. If you don't have cows in your life, isn't it time to find cows? Or cake?
Or both?
Thanks for listening, and Happy New Year!
Christmas 2008 was one of our family's best ever.
At least for me. Probably not for the kids.
I decided to start this Christmas season off by sharing a family tradition that has changed our Christmas celebrations for the better.
Maybe it will work for you.

Have you ever had a "Lollipop Moment?"
Drew Dudley, in his TEDx talk, explains the powerful impact we can have -- and probably HAVE had -- on others. And that they have had on us.
This Thanksgiving, I'm grateful for you and for the Lollipop Moments we've shared. Now go tell someone how they've made a difference in your life.
Once again, we talk to Mark, who celebrated his birthday by giving away dozens of chocolate cakes.
Did he experience the Chocolate Cake Phenomenon? Or was it just a side effect of the Kilimanjaro altitude?
And were there any lessons to be learned from it all?
It's that time of year again, when we may be more public in our expressions of gratitude.
Join new co-host Jeff, as we talk about how gratitude can be the cause of...and the result of...our opportunities to minister to others.
Welcome newest co-host, Sarah! (from "Patience" fame)
This week, we talk about better teaching. We've all been in classes that we find less than inspiring. In this discussion, we talk about how we, as learners, might be able to help make a class more inspiring than it might otherwise be.

Highly acclaimed co-host CJ and Ken take a Fall Break road trip to experience some of the Church History sites in Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania.
Some of us had some new thoughts and experiences. Listen as we discuss our visit without the distractions of kids.
I grew up hearing that we should "love the sinner, and hate the sin."
How likely is it that we can successfully do that?
And what about when the "sin" is part of the identity of the "sinner?"
Can we really extricate one from the other? Do we need to?
Allision and Ken hash this out and maybe come to some conclusions.
Where two or three are gathered in His name, His spirit is there.
...Unless...those two or three have different ideas, understandings, or opinions.
How can we make our lessons and our conversations "safe spaces" for disagreement and discussion WITHOUT creating contention?
I'm not sure we found an answer, but we had fun talking about it. Share your thoughts with me at ken@chocolatecakebytes.com
"Men are that they might have joy."
But, "There must needs be opposition in all things."
So, which is it?
Can we have both? Or is the goal to be happy ALL THE TIME?
Listen in as I figure some things out for myself.
What does having patience have to do with having courage?
And what about having courage NOT to be healed?
Our friend CJ is back with some interesting insights about having patience on the Lord's plans and on His timing.
Our thoughts feel true to us, so we tend to believe them without really considering whether they serve us.
And maybe...just maybe, they aren't right.
How can we determine if a thought is "just the way it is," or if it's something that we should shift our thinking about?
Am I just "lazy," "a procrastinator," or "Just not a good ministering brother?" Or is there something incorrect about how I think about myself or others?
Carissa and Ken talk through some thoughts and discuss whether they're just right, or might they need to change

It's the Church's version of "open mic night." The first Sunday of the month, members of the congregation have the opportunity to stand before everyone to share their thoughts, ideas, experiences, and beliefs.
But what about when Testimony Meeting goes off the rails?
What is our obligation? To ourselves? To the rest of the members of the congregation?
Join Annette and Mark as we have some surprising insights as we tackle these questions.
What is the Power of Prayer? What should we pray for?
What does it mean to "counsel with the Lord in all our doings?" Should we wait for Him to "direct our paths" before taking action?
And what about prayers that remove agency? "Bless Teddy to decide to serve a mission."
And what about when my kids ask to "bless this food (that Dad made) that it will taste good."
There are probably more questions than answers, but I'd love to hear your feedback. Ken@chocolatecakebytes.com
Am I the only one who finds it difficult to not be judgmental?
I understand the concept, but when it comes down to it, I see people making choices that are different than what (I think they) should, and it's easy for me to be critical.

In this episode, Fan Favorites (or Family Favorites?) Annette and Allison join in the discussion about Personal Revelation.
If I have received personal revelation, what should I do with that information or knowledge?
What is my obligation to share, encourage, or force you to follow my path?
How do I know it's an answer from God...or if it's just my own feelings, hopes, desires, or anxieties?

Mosiah 3:19 says the Natural man is an enemy to God.
What does that mean? What is a "natural man?"
I have no idea, but I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Maybe my ramblings will resonate with you. Maybe not. Give it a listen and let me know.
Annette is back! In this week's conversation, we start by considering how helpful it is to push others (and what about ourselves?) to just go through the motions.
I remember hearing, "If we can just get him on a mission, he'll be fine," or "if we can get her to graduate Seminary, she'll gain a testimony."
Does encouraging (or forcing, in some cases) the "right" behavior create the end result we want?
Shawn Rapier is the host of the amazing Latter-day Lives podcast (http://latterdaylives.com) and is our co-host this week!
What if someone you love has lost interest in the Church? What does that mean for you and for your "Eternal Family?"
Shawn has eight(!) children, who all have varying levels of interest and activity in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He shares some comforting perspectives on how to navigate the often-difficult life journey when someone we love decides they're not as committed to the Church as we might think they should be.
Seventeen episodes in, and I've learned a few things. And I've re-learned some things. And a few things have been reinforced.
In this week's episode, I share a few random thoughts about how the conversations we've shared over the past couple of months have shaped my own perspective about Gospel Living.
How do we reconcile the need to establish our own personal boundaries (and respect the boundaries of others) with the idea of revelation and inspiration in extending and accepting callings, assignments, and the like?
New co-host and favorite sister-in-law Cindy joins old co-host and favorite daughter Allison in discussing how we can overlay boundaries with our duties as members of the Church.
What should we do when someone's choices have some impact--from negligible to immense?
How you dress might affect other people's thoughts. What is your obligation when it comes to "modesty?"
How you interpret counsel from prophets or scripture might make me uncomfortable. So I should tell you when you're wrong...shouldn't I?
This week we talk with Annette, the most-referenced person on the podcast, and the oldest of Ken's sisters. She has some opinions that might make you smile, or cringe, or maybe even think.
Thanks, Ryan for the rating and review!
Sometimes I think, "What if I'm wrong about what I think?"
I might be. There are people who disagree with me on nearly every subject.
But what I mean is what if I'm wrong about how to go about getting answers to prayers? Or about how to pray? How to recognize revelation...or even my life's purpose?
This week, I share some ideas where I wonder if I'm thinking about things backwards.

"That's a good question."
What if in your Sunday School lessons, personal study, or family discussions, you could ask, ponder, and answer questions that made you think and feel deeply?
Questions that require something beyond "Go to church, say your prayers, read your scriptures?"
Ken, Mark, and Allison talk about a couple of ways that might help deepen your own gospel insights.
We are often curious about the details of someone's life:
* When is the newlywed couple going to have kids?
* Why is the recently-departed missionary home already?
* Why did that family have ANOTHER baby? Don't they know it's time to stop?
* That couple has been dating for a few weeks now. Are wedding bells in their future?
And more.
Our natural curiosity can prompt questions to (and about) people in our circles, but many times, fielding those questions is painful. And, do we REALLY have to know?
Join us for another conversation with Mark!
We have lots of opinions about a LOT of things, and sometimes my opinion (which is most certainly right!) is different from your opinion.
Can we disagree without being disagreeable? Should I be invested in your opinion, and should I feel compelled to make sure you know mine?
Allison and Justin join in this week's conversation to talk about whether we should share...or care.
In a departure from the recent conversations we have been having, we are going to listen to the Valedictory speech given by my (favorite?) niece, Lexi, who teaches a powerful lesson about the importance of being kind.
Because you are loved and you deserve it.
I was recently invited to share some thoughts on Tender Mercies on the weekly Our Turtle House digital fireside (https://youtu.be/uFFDAAiMQVs)
As I thought about the Lord's tender mercies, I looked at the definition from Elder Bednar's iconic General Conference talk on Tender Mercies (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/pages/tender-mercies-of-lord?lang=eng).
It got me thinking.
What are tender mercies?
Why does the Lord shower us with His tender mercies?
How can we recognize them when they come?
How can we experience more?
Here are my thoughts. I'd love to hear yours.
We're back with Mark, and we're talking about stories. Sometimes we tell good ones, and sometimes we tell ahem less good ones. Whether it's in a testimony meeting, Sacrament meeting talk, lesson, or even in casual conversation, having good stories to tell can help change lives and bring people closer to Christ.
Every one of us has hidden challenges and problems. Some of our challenges can make it easy for us to be hidden from others.
CJ is back, sharing with us how being blind has kept him hidden from some people, and Abby is with us, telling us about how her non-traditional family situation has been one of her challenges. And we talk about how we can notice the hidden people around us and help to draw them into our circles.
We're excited for you to join in our conversation!
Carissa is back! We talk about how God answers prayers. And guess what? It's through US!
There's more to "Spiritual Gifts" than just the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, and the rest of the things the scriptures say.
In this week's conversation, we talk to Mark (Ken's favorite(?) sibling about how we can discover and use our gifts.
We have been told over and over that God loves us individually and perfectly. I remember hearing also that discovering how Heavenly Father feels about you is one of the sweetest experiences you can have.
In this episode, we discover how Carissa (Ken's second favorite daughter--but not his second favorite) knows how God feels about her...and about you.
Does service have to be awful? Do we have to be miserable for our service to "count?" How can we make sure our "service to our fellow beings" truly becomes Service to God?"
If you are curious (and even if you aren't), here is the recipe and how I make my favorite chocolate cake
Ken's Mom's Chocolate Cake
Dutch processed cocoa powder will make a richer and darker cake. Buttermilk can be substituted with regular milk or sour milk. The secret is, of course, Love. And some butter.
In a saucepan, boil:
2 sticks butter
1 cup water
Pour boiling ingredients over:
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
4 TBSP cocoa powder
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
Directions:
Mix ingredients together until smooth. Pour into a greased 9x13" baking pan. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until done
Frosting:
Melt 1 stick butter with 5 TBSP buttermilk
Pour over 3 1/2 cups-4 cups powdered sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla, and 4 TBSP cocoa powder.
Frost cake while still warm.
Nephi wanted to "see and hear and know" the things his father saw. Using Chocolate Cake as a metaphor, can we better understand why we need to "see and hear and know" things for ourselves rather than rely on the words, thoughts, and beliefs of others?
What is the deal with Ken and Chocolate Cake? Over the past several years, he has found that the blessings in making and sharing chocolate cake with people, and sometimes...just sometimes...he finds that he is in the right place at the right time. Considering the question "Who do you know who need chocolate cake?" has been at the center of his (almost) weekly family traditions for the past several years.
