Sometimes In Life: Recent Episodes

Noorah Kareem

My name is Noorah, and this is where we help close the gap between Modern Psychology and what Allah says about us in His Book (in both English and Arabic).

I also share secrets and insights into the most common questions I get asked in my private 1 on 1 sessions and my thoughts on them that I don’t share anywhere else.

To help us:

1- Answer life's BIGGEST questions(or at least start with the right questions!) 2- Go back to the core 3- Bring Allah back into our life

A little bit more about me:

I am a coach, an artist, and the founder of In Conversation. I believe we're all created differently and there's a reason why we're here, and it's my job to help you figure it out.

Psychology in The Quran is my secret hobby, the glue to everything I do, and I am so glad you're here 💛

Your fan, Noorah

Yes, God loves you.

Okay, I recently came accrues a pst that said: “be smart, no one cares about your efforts, only the results.”- TRIGGER!

I suppose it’s true most people only reword results. Luckily God awards effort regardless of results. (you can't always control that ether no matter what people say. You can only control your efforts. Results come from Allah). And I feel like internally, we need to value efforts too and so we don't just base our success or worth on results.

Notice how in The Quran God uses the word 'effort/سعي' a lot?

And that man shall have nothing but what he strives for. And that his striving shall soon be seen-"

He used the word "سعي/effort" and not "إالا ما أنجز/ What he accomplished".

Today's Aya: 1- "فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ "so beautiful patience is most fitting"

And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.

He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know.

It's a two-step process:

1- Understand yourself: What are your strengths and challenges.

A simple way to do that is by taking a personality assessment (https://www.noorahkareem.com/type-coach) 2- Put the information to work...

Oh, and a surprising fact about strengths and weaknesses....

Part of the process of reconnecting IS going to be vulnerable.. the question is where do you want to do it?

Too many times I see people dwell on a mistake they have made or a regret:

"I'm bad"

"There's no hope in me.",

"I know better why am I still doing it?!"

To busy beating themselves up. Regret and shame are beautiful gifts when they lead us to want more and better from ourselves, but there's a fine line when we start using them against ourselves keeping us stuck and deemed to our past instead of as a gift to get us back on track.

If you ever lost hope in yourself, this video is a gift from me to you.

"Noorah, why am I still doing it?"

The simple answer is: because your heart isn't convinced.

We can "convince" your heart intellectually all we want and it will agree with all that we are saying..., but it won't "shift".

It won't shift until it's engaged in a different type of conversation.

A conversation where needs can be heard and met and where aspirations and new narratives can be born.

"God doesn't change the condition of people until they change what is within themselves”- I love this aya!

It gives me hope.

No matter what situation we're in, in our personal or work life, we have something in our control. We have power. We have choice. If we want to change a situation, we CAN.

Not by "making" someone change or by "forcing" someone to act a certain way or to think a certain way, but by moving differently ourselves.

Now, doesn't that fill you with hope??

This is one of my personal favorite topics to explore with my clients that I believe has one of the biggest impacts and breakthroughs for them and the work they do-I even made a whole program about it (www.noorahkareem.com/coaching).

Most of the time what we need is to get out of their own way of success.

We become our worst enemies when it comes to growth and expanding ourselves.

"Omg, I can't do that. That's not me!" "I'm just pretending. It's a lie. I'm a lie"

In this episode, I want to invite you to three things that will help you manage those inner-critics, get out of your own way and go BIG!

In every stage in life we need to learn how to:

1- Let go of something that's no longer helping us and is holding us back.

2- Build something new- Learn a new way of being.

The Process of letting go of something is the shadow that we tent to avoid. When we avoid it we keep ourselves locked in the old patterns that are keeping us stuck. Unable to expand, grow and find new meaning.

Whatever stage you are in life, in this 7 minute podcast, I leave you with a thought that will help you take the first step.

Coz here's what I see happening, people either go on one extreme or the other.

Holding on too tightly to their strengths where they can't see any place of improvement.

Or they hold on too tightly to their weaknesses that they are unable to admit and own their strengths.

Both are flips sides of "not feeling good enough." The middle zone (where self-confidence lies), is where we can see ourselves as a whole.

We can lean on our strengths, we are aware of our challenges and we can consciously decide on what we want to lean on and what we want to improve on and why.

To create change you need three things:

1⇢ You need to engage the heart.

Coz that's where real change happens. It's not enough to "know". The heart needs to be convinced before you and I can change our ways and create new ways.

2⇢ You need to create new narratives about who you are, who others are, what's happening around you and what's the meaning behind it, etc.

3 ⇢ You must be willing to walk through the shadows when they come.

What I learned:

1 ⇢ Sometimes in life, God doesn't give us what we want to test us to see what really lies in our chests and hearts

وَلِيَبْتَلِيَ اللَّهُ مَا فِي صُدُورِكُمْ وَلِيُمَحِّصَ مَا فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ (154) سورة العمران "And let God test what is in your chests and check what is in your hearts"

2 ⇢ Choosing to worship God can come from two different places in the heart: A- I did something for you God and now I am entitled to ___ (whatever that thing is that you're looking for is). This comes from a place of and doubt in the hearts. (Not our place to do that as slaves to The Master) B- Or a place of a humble slave.

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَعْبُدُ اللَّهَ عَلَى حَرْفٍ فَإِنْ أَصَابَهُ خَيْرٌ اطْمَأَنَّ بِهِ وَإِنْ أَصَابَتْهُ فِتْنَةٌ انقَلَبَ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ خَسِرَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةَ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْخُسْرَانُ الْمُبِين ( 11 ) سورة الحج "There are among men some who serve Allah, as it were, on the verge: if good befalls them, they are, therewith, well content; but if a trial comes to them, they turn on their faces: they lose both this world and the Hereafter: that is loss for all to see!"

3 ⇢ The next time you find yourself in a hard situation, what do you want God to see in your heart?

"And if my slave asks you about me, I am indeed close I indeed answer the call of the caller. So they should try to respond to me and believe in me so they can be guided."

What I learned:

1 ⇢ God talks to us directly.

2 ⇢ God for sure answers our call but he also asks us for something in return: try to respond to Him. What I find amazing is God uses the word "they should TRY". He isnt askign for perfection,. He is askign fro effort.

3 ⇢ If you ever find yourself in a tough situation needing to comfort from Him. Use this aya to ask Him about Him.. But doent forget to put in the effort first.. try to repsond to him then ask Him about Him. The way He responses (the HOW) it's up to HIm. (He is The Master and we are the slaves)

What I learned:

2 ⇢ Self-disappointment is one of the worst feelings ever. That's why some of us choose to throw it as far away as possible! Discharge it by getting angry and blaming others "You made me do it- or not do it!? If only you did this, I would have_____." (Feel free to fill in the blank).

Others hold it too close and let it define who they are. "I'm a failure/ there's no hope for me"

2 ⇢ ٍRepentance/ توبة can help you and I feel like our hearts have been cleaned again and take away the pain of self-disappointment.

3 ⇢ ٍSometimes in life, even when we repent from something we might still need to later down the line deal with consiquenses. As scary as that may sound right noe, it's OK... becouse God will be on your side making it easy for you and guidning you.

"God is a friend and supporter to those who believe and will bring them out of the darkness to the light"

He's your friend/ supporter ohhh AND He loves you...

And God loves those who repent and He loves those who cleanse themselves"

"And when thy Lord said to the angels, I will make a land in the land as a caliph, saying, I will make those who spoil it and shed blood, and we will praise you, and sanctify you. He said, I know what you do not know."

What I learned:

⇢ Sometimes in life, things will happen that we can't understand. And it's normal to feel confused or want to understand the reason and wisdom behind it

⇢ Asking why is part of our nature but there are two ways to ask: 1- "why me God?/ this shouldn't be happening!?" this why the question comes from a place of ingratitude and rejecting the decree of Allah. 2- The way the prophets and angles asked God when they didn't understand something... by asking him WHILE declaring his perfection and their gratitude and praise. So it comes from a place of being humble and wanting him to shed light on what we cant, but we know whatever he does is flawless and thank you.

⇢ God sees good in us. That's why he created us. Because He knows the good that some of us will choose to do. ➖➖➖ For more visit: www.noorahkareem.com

What I Learned:

⇢ Assertiveness is a skill there for it can be taught and learned.

⇢ If we never choose to use our voice, with time we will start going into: 1- Passive aggressive behaviors 2- Aggressive behaviors “أَمْ حَسِبَ الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ أَن لَّن يُخْرِجَ اللَّهُ أَضْغَانَهُمْ “

⇢ How to find your voice? 1- Find your boundaries 2- get curious, ask the person questions then speak the difference (using "I" statements)

What I Learned:

⇢ There are two extreme ends of boundary types: 1- Too ridged: nothing comes in, and nothing goes out, strong need to protect self and a need to feel in control (so nothing hurts me and nothing unexpected happens) 2- Really loose boundaries (barely there): whatever you say go, it's up to you, I can't say no, and I'll deal with the consequences later.

⇢ God gave us human beings a space where we can choose there for it's not fair for us to dictate to others what they should do, feel, behave.. yes to guide and be there but we cant force. It was a space given by God.

⇢ The fact that God gave us choice means we also need to respect that responsibility in others (AND ourselves) that space is sacred.. take care of it.

View Details

Let's be honest everyone is going to annoy us. And we will do our share of annoying others as well.

What I learned:

⇢ Sometimes it's not about keeping quiet and bottling it up, because when we feel like the thing that hurts us keeps happening over and over again, we start thinking the other person doesn't care enough about us or why else would they keep doing what hurts us??

And what happens is that if we let those feelings pile it up inside of us with time, they will turn into resentment and resentment turns into rejection.

And Resentment and rejection hurt relationships.

⇢ So you may say "This is all great Noorah, but I really don't want to do that. I can deal with the hurt on my own, or I don't need anything from anyone I can manage my feelings on my own"

Maybe.. but let me share with you an Ayah from the Quran that speaks about this:

“أَمْ حَسِبَ الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ أَن لَّن يُخْرِجَ اللَّهُ أَضْغَانَهُمْ “

"Did those who harbor ill feelings and sickness in their hearts think that God wouldn’t send them a situation that will expose it?"

It reinforced in me a reason to hold those honest conversations. Even if they are hard. Especially when I know that the ill feelings will be bottled-up on the inside of me.

What I Learned:

1 ⇢ The Creater talks to us and places things in our chest (knwollage and comfort) even if we arn;t prophets ourselves.

2 ⇢ The Creater just gives us enough heads up to strengthen our hearts and give us comfort to move forward and take the steps we need to take.

3 ⇢ Soemtimes it's a blessing and out of mercy that when he does place information in our hearts that he doesnt show us everyhting, coz if he did we would ahve failed and fought amongst each other.

What I Learned:

⇢ It's hard to see things clearly when our ego is involved.

⇢ If you ever find yourself in life confused whether what you're doing is right or wrong then ask God "اللهم بصرني"/ God, please give me the ability to see.. and you will suddenly know.

⇢ Asking God for the ability to see takes courage (coz you're letting those ego walls down), and it also takes trust in him. Hold on to that.

⇢ What I learned:

When life happens and things don’t make sense, we have three choices. We can either:

1- Let go of how we think things “should” have been. Surrendering to The Creator and accepting (الإستسلام) while taking responsibility for our efforts and make the most out of the hands we were dealt with.

2- Stay suck in the loop of trying SO HARD to make the thing fit in the way we think they “should be" or how they are "supposed to go"

3- But there's also a third way that not everyone talks about... Where we get stuck the hole in between and it sounds like this "I will surrender and except but first I need to understand why."

"I keep praying and God doesn't seem to be listening to me" "Why is God giving me the opposite of my prayers?"

In my search for understanding, one of the strongest lessons I learned are:

⇢ the same events that we think would leave us feeling like we lost something important-something that we thought belonged to us was taken away-are the same events that bring those things to us.

⇢ The method might be in a different to get it (the shape it comes in or the path we go through) But it is what we wished, need and asked for.

One other thing, we won't necessarily understand it all... Or it might take time...

Believing in the unseen is part of the religion the challenge. IF we all see what it is all the time it's not anymore believing in the unseen?

Our job is to ask and seek, God replies:

1⇢ the way He sees best (How)

2⇢the time He sees best (When) 216 They didn't know when Gods help would come, or when they would die or when people would believe them or when the day of Judgment would be Whatever shape and path and whenever it comes with.

The real question is.. do we trust God?

More tomorrow about dealing with not knowing- or when we find ourselves asking the question Why... why is this happening or if I only knew why I could move on.

Today I want to take to you something that is very dear to my heart.

Not too long ago, I was faced with a choice that truly scared me to the point of wanting to disappear. In my heart, I know what the right choice was but I was terrified.. because if I did that.. if I did I would have to go through a lot of pain and heartache.. and I didn't want that. . That's when I remember coming across this aya.

A message from Allah loud and clear.

⇢ What I Learned:

It's amazing how the things that we think would break us (and even if they did in the beginning) are the exact same things that Allah promises will give us life. And He always keeps His promise.

Talk to Him. Tell him how you feel and what you're afraid of. Ask Him for what you need. Have a conversation with Him.

Quran is basically God talking to us and Prayer is us talking to him, and you can't get to know someone and have a relationship with him unless you take to them and spend time with them.

Coaching Question:

• Is there an area in your life where you feel like Allah has been guiding and calling you to a path that might seem daunting and scary?

• What would it take for you to believe that the path has a life beyond what you and I can understand and see and that his promise is true but we might not be able to see it until we chose to take it?

Here's what I learned:

There is a healthy and unhealthy way of "surrendering"

Are you surrendering as in "I don't care anymore!/ I give up!", or is it "I surrender to The Creator all my issues and trust his way and still willing to do my part"?

I feel like true surrendering was one of the biggest lessons I had to learn over and over again in my life. With every stage of life a new way of trusting him. And maybe that will always be a lesson you and I will have to continue learning and cleaning our hearts with.

Another thing in life I learned is that sometimes in life, God tests us with two kinds of tests:

1- to see if we will go against the odds and make something happen/change.

2- To see if we will accept his decree? (Our job is to do the effort and the results are on God). Getting sick, lost of someone, or in situations where we did everything we were supposed to do we got a divorce, lost a job, ask for forgiveness but others couldn't forgive us or we didn't marry the person we wanted, etc. whatever it is.. that He closed the door.

⇢ Our job in life is to find out what situation is which?

Is basically asking God which path to take.. asking him to open and close the right doors and make our hearts in peace with it.

Questions for self-reflection: • Are you accepting God's decree? • What do you need to accept right now?

Al-Qiyaama

"No doubt about it human being is in full view of himself, even if they give excuses"

Some excuses: "They make me angry, it's their fault. That's why I scream yell and say mean things." "I had really bad parents." "I'm a hopeless case." "God won't except me anyway. I made too many mistakes" "I grew up poor what was I suppose to do."

Three things:

1- Human beings have been given choices

2-With choice comes responsibility.

3- There are consequences: in this world, we can give our excuses and possibly even get away with it. But in the next world, God will ask us.

When we are blind we don’t have a choice in thing. But when we become aware, we suddenly have choices. We have a vision of who we want to be and where we would like to go.

Two questions to leave you with: • What are you pretending not to see? and what would happen if you did? • Fill in the blank: did I try my best today to _______ ??

⇢ "I'm just an angry person." ⇢ "You know I get angry fast, it's your fault for triggering me." ⇢ "I'm a hopeless case"

Is there truth to these statements?

Today's Ayas:

Yes, human beings have been created in a reactionary way. Yes, we are born with that tendency and yes, we all have different challenges. What comes easily to you may not come easily to me and what comes naturally to you might take a lot of effort from me and my strengths may be your weaknesses.

And that's okay.

I believe we are put here to figure ourselves out and then work accordingly.

Even on an emotional level, we all have different strengths and challenges and it's important to know what they are and then work with them. We are born with certain things that come "easy" and "hard" to us but we still have "choices".

Where does anger come from and what is it trying to tell us? What does The Quran say about them and where does he place them in our physical form?

What I learned from my work in therapy and working closely with clients, is that when anger shows up it’s always there for a reason. And we usually go to anger when we are uncomfortable or maybe just not ready to deal with sadness or fear.

Anger directs emotions outward, and it also enables us to feel like we are in control in these situations, and we like being in control.

It's normal that most of us hate dealing with uncomfortable emotions such as sadness, anxiety, and fear, so we tent to avoid. One of the ways we avoid them is by anger. Anger is useful and even a healthy emotion when understood how to use it, how much of it to use, when, where and with whom but most importantly to understand why it is there.

Anger always has a reason for showing up and is an indication that there is a deeper issue. Maybe a value that has been threatened. Anger is a call to action. We must understand why it's there, what it's trying to tell us and what emotions are hiding behind it.

The reason I say sadness or fear, is because usually when we feel like: . 1 ⇨ we lost something (in the past = sadness) . or we feel like: . 2 ⇨ something bad might happen in the future (future = fear) . And we aren’t yet ready to deal with it we choose anger because it makes us feel in control.

Personally, I haven't decided if there is a third reason (غيره على دين الله anger when someone Goes against God's religion) but for today we will talk about the first two reasons.

I want to share with you two different ways Allah uses very similar ayas.. one dealing with fear and the other anger...

He sent tranquility and peace onto their hearts of the believers It's felt on the heart.. on our skin.. fear of the future.. In this situation, the prophet and companions were feeling fear and needed tranquility on their hearts.

He sent it into the hearts of the believers. In this situation, the companions were feeling anger and needed tranquility in their hearts. Coz anger is placed inside of the hearts.

Here is a little tip: The next time you, or someone you know, is experiencing anger asking questions like "what are you afraid of?" or "are you sad?", when asked genuinely with a safe space to explore the underlining emotions, might help you move and the people you love past the anger in it's and deal with the real emotion and need behind it.

Have you noticed that Allah talks about these two emotions a lot on The Quran?

That's what we will be talking about today.

Emotions are a part of us and not all of us. And I believe they are always there for a reason. There to tell us something.

Understanding them helps us uncover our values, boundaries, what matters to us.

Let's start with:

1- Fear Fear is always associated with the future. That something bad will happen in the future. Today we would use the phrase axiality/stress. Fear is felt on the hearts.

2- Sadness Sadness is associated with the past. Something in the past didn't go the way I wanted it to. I lose something that I cared about. Fear is felt in the hearts.

We feel these two feelings because something mattered to us.

Fear and sadness lay int he heart.. which means to help you or someone you love work through those feelings you need to connect and engage the heart.

If you're struggling with...

1- Sadness: The lost something.. what is it that your being called to let go of and if you did it would open new possibilities for yourself?

Having said that it's okay to experience sadness at times. Even prophets experienced sadness. Jacob was so sad that he went blind from his tears. The important part is that he never questioned God. He was sad for losing his son but never questioned God's wisdom or mercy...

And if you find yourself struggling with fear/anxiety, always trying to make something happen or not happen, anxious, stressed and afraid, what would it take to allow you to let go of the results and the outcome? Focus on your part (the efforts choices and decisions) and the rest to Allah?

I can't tell you how many times I tried to open or close a door. Tring to make my parents and siblings see something I see or agree with me that something is good or bad. Were my job was only to state the difference/ share/communicate and then let them ..whatever doors God opens or closes believe it's from him.

It takes a lot of courage and trust to open your fist .. to whatever you're clinging on too. a physical way of letting it go.

Opening it for Allah and trusting him

Tomorrow we will continue the conversation and bring anger into the conversation and how The Quran talks about them.

"I can't believe this is happening to me again!" "Why isn't God isn't answering my prayers?"

Sometimes in life, you may feel like the same thing keeps happening to you over and over again no matter how much you keep running away from it, it follows you.

Different people... different job... same situation.

Here's what I learned, when things keep happening to us over and over again there is a hidden blessing somewhere within it...

When a story we carry deep within us and it causes us pain and sadness (and it's a story about who we are) The only thing that can actually heal that pain is changing that story. And what I mean by that is being in a state where I can act differently, I can choose differently, I can be different, I can see my self differently and therefore I heal coz I'm no longer the old story the old identity.

So when a very similar situation keeps popping up into your life (even if it looked different from the outside) God is sending it as an opportunity... and yes, the process will be scary, frustrating and will be filled with the unknown and from my experience, it also requires us to do something we really don't want to show God we trust him.

I want to share with you a recent lesson I learned from two studies of Musa's story in my journey of the study of The Quran...

1- When Musa was trying to defend one of his people and pushed the gard and accednetly killed him and then he said قَالَ هَٰذَا مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ ۖ إِنَّهُ عَدُوٌّ مُّضِلٌّ مُّبِينٌ (15) قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَغَفَرَ لَهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ (16) قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَا أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ فَلَنْ أَكُونَ ظَهِيرًا لِّلْمُجْرِمِينَ he repented and made an intention and a decision that he won't be a supporter to hose who act out of ignorence or react when emotinaly over whelmed.

The very next day, God tests him with the same exact incident. His old story he was a murder (by mistake) the second time he acts differently so the story that he will now tell about himself would be as someone who acted differently. He can see himself in a new light (healing)

Don't underestimate the power of intention. Even if you don't know what to do, where you want to go or what you need to change, you just know your open to better whatever that looks like. In Musa is case his intention was I won't support the ignorant.

Here is another thing, when your ready God WILL test you... Sometimes the very next day and sometimes like Musa is the second story he gives us more time to build a self that can do something different .. we need to work on ourselves to be a self that can manage that situation in a new light.

So in the second incident in Musa's story that I want to highlight is: He ran away from the nation when he feard they will kill him (21) 10 years letter he was standing on the mountain and talking to God who has given him the revelation and told him: وَإِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰ أَنِ ائْتِ الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ (10

He answered his prayers for 10 years gave him what he needed.. then 10 years after told him okay time to go back-you are ready.

Whatever situation you're going through in your life that seems to be following you and you can't get away from, know that God is sending it as mercy and care and not punishment. If we were only brave enough and trusted him enough to do our part and leave the rest and the results and the healing to him. Even when we don't know what we can do .. just sent an intention.. the intention will guide you and God will make it open doors that you can't even imagine.

Set an intention. Trust and then do the work required when it shows us. and you WILL heal. He will take care of you. He IS taking care of you.

Today's Aya:

Two nights ago, I was making pizza, My husband came home from work and asked me if I will forget the pizza in the oven. I told him I won't.. well I did and I burned it. When my husband asked me about the pizza the first reaction that I wanted to say "you didn't remind me!"

Sounds familiar?

But I also remembered one of the biggest things I learned the last couple years, when I start judging others and trying to look and find fault in them then I'm probably doing it to protect myself from feeling shame myself.

Coz it is a hard feeling! It really is!

So we throw shame onto each other.

A few weeks ago, I went through a really strong shame storm (thank you Brene for giving me this word!), my the first reaction was wanting to call my husband and throw it on to him. And you know we tent to want to throw it to the closest people around us, husband, wife, mother, kids, etc anyone else but me. It's not me-it's them. I'm clean. I'm a good.

That's when I remembered the aya:

إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعاً * إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعاً * وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعاً

In that moment I was in حالة جزع I couldn't control my emotions...I also remembered the rest of the aya:

  • إِلَّا الْمُصَلِّينَ* الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَى صَلَاتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ

⇢ Sometimes in life, we are going to find ourselves in a hard situation with a lot of shame and guilt and we're gonna want to project it onto others in order to be able to say to ourselves " it's not me-it's them". Our identity feels safe.

Here is the thing, Self-regulation isn't about putting our feelings and emotions in a box and pretending like it doesn't exist. It's about in the moment being:

1- aware of what we are feeling (okay I'm feeling shame and I want to throw it onto someone else) 2- In the same moment being able to put words to what we feel and need

"When this happens_______ I feel ________ I need________."

So if you're angry it may not necessarily about putting anger away but putting words to it to communicate it.

Not in a state of جزع anymore. You're not in reactionary mode but in a place of awareness and being able to make sound choices.

-How to get there?? * إِلَّا الْمُصَلِّينَ* الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَى صَلَاتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ those whoa re constantly in prayer.

I want to leave you with this thought by Brené Brown, the pioneer in shame an vulnerability in her book Rising Strong:

“No regrets" doesn't mean living with courage, it means living without reflection. To live without regret is to believe you have nothing to learn, no amends to make, and no opportunity to be braver with your life. ... "

Tomorrow we're gonna talk about those moments when we need to make hard choices, stay tuned.

⇢ "I'm not good enough." ⇢ "I'm not perfect, I can't do all of this."

Internal dialogs that do exist in most of us-if not all of us. What I want to do today is bring God into the picture. His words from His book.

Here is what I learned:

" لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا ۚ"

God used the word "bette"r not "best" and not "the best". Not الأحسن It's a mercy he doesn't expect the best. He expects improvement. Everyone can be better.

Day #4 What I Learned ~A Ramadan Series

"I wish I was dumb." "Sometimes I wish I could just go back to not knowing."

These are statements I hear a lot in my sessions.

⇢ Sometimes in life, we may feel like we know too much for my own good. And now that we know it, we can't un-know it, and that feeling can hurt us.

Here is what I learned:

When we start becoming more aware of things about ourselves; why we act certain ways, why we don't do what we say we will, etc, even awareness about others, in the beginning, can feel painful. It's a normal part of the process and I'll tell you why in a little story.

When I first started studying and getting into psychology I would buy books on the topics that I really wanted to learn more about but also didn't really want to know at the same time (I was terrified to the point where my mind would race and I couldn't sleep at night).

I remember this one book I bought on anger, I read one chapter and put it away for a whole year before I had the courage to read the rest. Coz I wasn't ready for the change it required me to make.

So I can totally relate to the feeling of not wanting to know better..

Say for intense I realize I have a tendency to avoid things. Yes, it may hurt me that I engage in this behavior but it's also easier (or at least seems easier in the moment) for me to pretend like I don't know (this is where the feeling "I wish I could un-see it" comes in.)

Here is the truth, knowing and awareness is a gift-it is.

Even the trigger inside of us that tells us that something is wrong or something could be better ( we could be better) is a gift.

As long as we are alive, God has hope in us and it's because of that He keeps sending us triggers (آيات) to guide us to a straighter path. Helping us grow in new ways.

When I think of this aya (verse in the Quran): "ولا أقسم بالنفس اللوامة"

The Creator swears by the part us that He put in all of us Muslims and non-Muslims that triggers when we do something wrong. That part of us that feels shame and guilt.

When that feeling pops us we have two choices: 1- we either listen to it and change our stories 2- we don't listen

When choose not to listen, we then have to numb ourselves to stop feeling the triggers (the shame and guilt Allah put in us and swore by). And we do that through entertainment, drinking, smoking, people, etc. Anything to numb it. And God will keep showing us mercy by giving us that voice inside of us that will keep calling us as long as we're alive.

I'll be honest with you, it is a hard feeling.

So we do more numbing and we build more layers. And the more layers we build the harder it may seem for us to go to the core of it and change our stories.

Here's a secret: the real reason people don't want to listen is because they don't want to change. Change is scary. For a person that's used to avoiding things, change might mean letting go of the thought that "there is nothing I can do about stuff" to make room for new thought "I can make choices and be an agent in my story"... that can be a very scary thing.

It requires you to be different and act differently. And yes, you'll have to go through some ugly feelings to build a new self.

Here is what I want to invite you to do the next time you go through these feelings: 1- Pause 2- Acknowledge that the voice (feeling) is there 3- Be grateful that the voice within is still calling you (God still has hope in you) 4- Change your story. And by that, I mean act in the way that would break the pattern and show that your grateful for that voice inside.

⇢ Is it enough to connect with The Creator during yoga?

Todays Aya: (وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ) And I (Allah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone)"

...............

It’s strange how psychology and therapy tell you not to talk about God. Yet what I noticed, is that the clients themselves want to talk about The Creator. They want to make sense of life and find meaning.

I believe we humans have a deep need to understand why we are here, what we're supposed to do and what our relationship with The Creator is like.; who He is and who we are to Him.

Sometimes people are more direct with this need and will willingly bring it up. Other times they talk around it, avoiding it as much as possible as if they put it in a box and then wrapped it up with do-not-touch tap and put it to the side. In both cases the need is real.

What I learned is that the more I got to know myself the more I got to know the Creator and the more I got to Know the Creator the more I got to know myself. You cant find answers to one without having questions about the other.

If God created us to worship him then getting to know him, talking about him and understanding him is the base and root of a healthy life. Not talking about him is like trying to win life without understanding the goal.

In the recent years, I've found people getting more interested in the concept of spirituality, listening to the voice within and connecting to something bigger than them. They may find it through yoga, meditation, stilling in nature, etc.

I think that's wonderful and I certainly do believe you can find God everywhere (آياته في كل مكان ) He's signs are everywhere.

That's why I believe you can find him in your darkest moments. Emersed in sin- as long as your alive He'd still be there calling you.

Even the part of us that feels guilty النفس اللوامة ( I'll make a couple of podcast on how the Quran talks about that in this series) is a sign from God.

But the question that comes to my mind is, isn't there more to that? Didn't God create us for more than that??

For a reason greater than simply acknowledging (and sometimes not even attributing the light to Him) his existence and the light inside of us? arent we supposed to "worship" him to? according to how "HE" told us not how we "think" we can worship him?

Today's Question:

⇢ What does success mean to you?

Today's Aya:

( إلا من أتى الله بقلب سليم ) (except those who come to Allah with a pure healthy heart)

....................... ⇢ What does success mean to me?

I’ve been thinking about this question a lot lately. 🤔

Is it fame? money? influence? prestige? Or is it happiness? Or maybe peace?...

We all want success and although we may use the same word to describe it, we usually mean different things by it.

Personally, my life changed dramatically after getting married, moving to a new city and taking a new path in my coaching/speaking work (going solo and everything that comes with building trust both online and offline). I find myself in a new place suddenly with a need to redefine what the word means to me.

Allah told us what two words he uses to describe success. I'm curious if you were to use one word (or two!) to describe success to you, what would that one (or two) word be??

Todays Aya:

Points Discussed:

⇢ Why don't we change even when we know what we can do better? ⇢ What truly creates shifts and changes?

A lot of times we know what we could do differently or better-I may know smoking is bad for me, yet I still do it-why? It's because the heart isn't convinced and it's not until we have a conversation between the mind "I think" and heart "I feel" do we really create real lasting changes and shifts

And as a therapist and a coach, it's my job to help facilitate those conversations in an empowering and safe way.

If you find yourself:

1- Stuck in your head (over thinking and analyzing everything), maybe it's time to talk to the heart.. bring it back into the conversation. 2- If you're stuck in your heart (way too caught up with your feelings-where you find it also hard to control them and they tent to slip out in reactionary ways), maybe it's time to go balance it out with bringing the mind back into the conversation.
