Grace Community Church is committed to building spiritually healthy people for ministry in the world. We are a disciple-making church with God-centered worship and biblical teaching, mutual encouragement toward spiritual growth, and engagement with the world through evangelism, missions, and service.
The message of Galatians has been that we are justified before God by the merits of Christ that we receive by faith, and not by our merit achieved by keeping the law. Now we hear that we are made holy by walking in the Spirt who we have also received by faith. The grace that sent Christ to the cross to save us from our sins is the grace that sent the Holy Spirit into our hearts to make us holy like Christ. Let’s respond to this grace by faith and keep in step with the Spirit.

Jason Miller preaches from Galations 3:26-4:11. Paul continues to defend the gospel of justification by faith in Christ alone by listing the many benefits that believers receive in Jesus. Faith in Christ unites us with His death and resurrection, and with all believers despite our external differences. God sent Jesus at just the right time to accomplish the redemption and adoption of His people. God sends his Holy Spirit into our hearts to confirm our relationship to the Father. With all these blessings available to us, why would we turn back to legalistic religious performance to win God’s favor?

Bill Maynard preaches from Galatians 3:1-14. Paul reproves the Galatian Christians for trusting in human works to try and perfect their salvation. He reveals the folly of this “works righteousness” by drawing on their own experience of being saved by grace through faith and then by unpacking Old Testament teachings about Abraham and the Law itself. He emphasizes the centrality of the Cross as God’s plan and means for salvation.

Paul’s concern in Galatians is that Christians stay in step with the truth of the gospel. This means to embrace the gospel as truth, believe in it for salvation, and live the new life that flows from its impact on the heart. In this passage, Paul remains in step with the gospel by defending it, even when doing so meant confrontation and conflict. Peter, on the other hand, had to be corrected because his conduct was not in step with the gospel. The exhortation for us is to know the gospel, let it change us at the heart level, and then walk consistent with its truth.

In this section of Galatians Paul continues to refute the false teachers who accused him of preaching a gospel that was different from the one preached by the other apostles. In the end, Paul shows that he and the other apostle agreed on the gospel of God’s grace and faith in Christ for salvation, and that they joined hands in taking that gospel to Jews and non-Jews alike. Today, we rejoice that the one true gospel of Jesus Christ has been protected and preserved for the sake of Christ’s glory and the good of our souls. Let’s press on in the freedom of Christ’s grace and bear its fruit in our lives.

The gospel is not from man in any way, it is from God in every way. The gospel’s origin, accomplishments, revelation to us, and application to our hearts are all from God. This means it is truly the power of God to save us from our sins and for a right relationship with him. What do we gain from knowing the gospel is from God and not from man? Confidence that the gospel is true, trust in the finished work of Christ, assurance of our salvation, awakening in love and gratitude to God, and new energy to live for his glory.

The opening of Paul’s letter to the Galatians gets right to the point. Paul is upset that some people are adding human works and merit to the gospel of God’s grace and justification by faith. He is concerned that this “different gospel”— which is no gospel— is being taught in the churches and embraced by Christians. This false gospel will do damage to the souls of these Christians, as it renders the death of Christ meaningless. With this concern, Paul launched into this letter to clarify the gospel of Christ, refute the false teachers, and rescue the churches from danger. Today, we give our attention to this letter and heed the call to keep the gospel clear in our minds so it will transform our hearts for the glory of God.

The council in Jerusalem confirmed the truth of the gospel that we are saved by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that this salvation is applied to us through faith in him. A pure gospel is the power to save, the joy of our hearts, the unity of the church, and the message for the world. We owe our lives to the Holy Spirit’s work in this council to keep the gospel pure.

Paul and Barnabas have great concern for the disciples recently converted to Christ. They know that these followers of Jesus will face regular and
varied trials, temptations, and tribulations throughout their time on earth. To ensure that the disciples are not surprised or deterred in the faith, Paul and Barnabas give them the direct message that tribulations will come, and the hope-filled promise that they will enter the kingdom of God. May the Lord strengthen our hearts today with these words.

In this episode of the missionary journey of Paul and Barnabas, we see how God provided for the churches that were established when people believed in Jesus and became his disciples. The Lord gave truth to strengthen the disciples’ souls, elders to watch over the congregations, and grace to sustain them in faithfulness through the many tribulations they will face. These are our provisions for today. Let us receive them with gratitude and joy.

The preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ is met with both unbelief and belief. Unbelief in Jesus is more than indifference, it is opposition to him. Genuine belief in Jesus leads to faithfulness to him. Acts 4 exposes unbelief and calls for repentance. It also shows the kind of thinking and praying that keeps us boldly believing and proclaiming him.

Jesus taught the disciples that the Holy Spirit would be given to bear witness about him (John 15:26). That day has come. Acts 3 begins with a healing miracle, but quickly turns into a sermon about Jesus of Nazareth. The Holy Spirit is active in the healing, the preaching, and the reception of the message by those who heard it. But not all submitted themselves to the Spirit and the word. And so, the opposition begins. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your heart, but believe.

The preaching of the gospel of Jesus and the reception of that message by the repentant crowd led to a gathering of new believers filled with the Holy Spirit. Immediately they devoted themselves to congregational life that built them up and continued the witness of Christ to others. This is what the Holy Spirit birthed on the day of Pentecost. May we be led by the Spirit and share their devotion today.

The message of Jesus as Lord and Christ, and the realization that it was this Jesus that they crucified, landed on the hearts of the people of Jerusalem with the force of cutting conviction. They knew they were guilty. What should they do? This Jesus whom they crucified will forgive them. The very death they caused is the means by which their sin is removed. Repentance, faith, and confession of Jesus as Lord is the way forward. This remains the way today.

The two responses of the crowd in Jerusalem to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit reflect their unbelief. Some are confused, some mock, but all are blind to the reality that the Spirit of God has come upon his people. Peter, the once fearful disciple who denied his Lord, now stands filled with courage by the power of the Spirit to declare that what is happening can be explained only as the work of Jesus of Nazareth. This Jesus, crucified and raised, has now poured out the Holy Spirit. This Jesus is both Lord and Christ. To this Jesus we turn in repentance and faith. This Jesus we proclaim.

In Acts 2, the promised day is here, and Jesus pours out his Spirit on his disciples. That day marks a new day in God’s redemptive history. In the days of the prophets and of John the Baptist, the Spirit was promised. Now the Spirit has come, filling believers with power to declare the mighty works of God in the last days. These are the days in which we live. This promise is for us. May the Lord open our eyes to this indescribable gift.

The days between the ascension of Jesus and the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and disciples were significant in the history of church and remain so for us today. These days show us the importance of obedience and prayer, the necessity of Scripture being fulfilled, and the provision that Christ makes for his church to be his witnesses. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he commissioned his apostles concerning their work in the world. Knowing that they were inadequate in themselves for this work, Jesus promised them the Holy Spirit, who would give them power. He promised that they would fulfill their call to be his witnesses. And he promised to return and bring the work to a final and victorious end. These promises are true for the church today, and they give us the confidence we need to faithfully continue on.

All our hope is in Jesus. We trust him for salvation, follow him as Lord, and live in union with him. Jesus is the cornerstone, and his
chosen apostles laid the foundation of truth on which the household of God is built. Today, from Acts 1, we see what Jesus did to prepare his apostles before he ascended into heaven. We come to faith in Jesus and enter the kingdom of God through their witness of him.

The book of Acts opens with what Jesus began to do and teach while on earth. As it unfolds, we discover what Jesus continues to do on earth in these last days. Until Jesus returns, there will be no end to his activity, by his Spirit, through his church that proclaims in all the world what his apostles witnessed concerning him. Today, we open the book of Acts to see Jesus reigning in heaven and ruling on earth. Someday we will see him in the new heavens and new earth. Until them, let us continue in faithfulness to him.

Our past, present, and future as Christians are represented in this passage, and reconciliation to God is the gift of grace that makes our lives complete in Christ. The prayers of the Bible are always relevant and we should always be praying them. In this one, we see that the knowledge of God’s will is for the purpose of living for God’s pleasure. Pleasing God is bearing fruit in good works, enduring by his strength, and giving thanks for his grace. When we pray for this we can be sure the Lord will answer us. When we pursue this, we can be sure he will grant it. Let us pray, and pursue, for the glory of God.

Modern greetings have become casual to the point of carrying little meaning and adding almost no value to our conversations and correspondence. But when Paul opened his letter to the Colossians, he made bold claims about Christ that called his readers to believe. Today, we will hear these claims and ask ourselves if we believe. Let’s begin by faith.

What should we anticipate in the months ahead? Answering these questions will help to increase our appreciation for Colossians, engage our attention to understand its truth, and set our intention to seek Christ and live as those who are united to him by faith. The work of Christ will continue until he returns. He has given his Spirit to his church to be his witnesses in the world. The Book of Acts is the history of Christ’s work in the decades after the cross and resurrection. It ends with the Apostle Paul in prison, but the gospel going forth unhindered. Discipleship did not end when Jesus was crucified. Jesus was raised from the dead and is alive. He has gathered and commissioned his disciples who follow him today. The most important part of Jesus’ call to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him, is that he is the one who is calling. Disciples come to see who Jesus is, and they follow him as he is. In this encounter with religious leaders, Jesus teaches us that discipleship is not a matter of keeping traditions established by man for the purpose of establishing and maintaining a relationship with God. Discipleship is obedience to God’s word that comes from a heart of love for him. This encounter also reveals our need for a Savior to cleanse our hearts and make them new so we can follow Christ. Christ is our Savior. May we follow him as Lord.

Jesus put before his disciples the foundational principle of spiritual receptivity to the word of God. All of discipleship is dependent on hearing and accepting the word, and the word bearing fruit in our lives. Our responsiveness to the word depends on the condition of our heart. Today, as we hear the word, ask the Lord for humble, believing, and receiving hearts. Let the word do its work of transforming our thoughts, loves, priorities, and pursuits. Pray for the spread of the word through our congregation to the world.

Discipleship is the term we use to speak of our lives as followers of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Mark is a manual for discipleship. The first chapter of Mark reveals Jesus as the Son of God who brought the kingdom of God to us. Our discipleship begins when we respond to Jesus and his message with repentance and faith. Repentance and faith involve the decision to follow him in loyalty, obedience, and mission. On this first summer Sunday at Grace Community Church, we hear and respond to Jesus to become and continue as his disciples.

The final chapter of Isaiah once again gives us a vision of the greatness of God. The stunning reality is that this great God takes notice and shows grace to the humble and contrite person who trembles at his word. We hear a final exhortation to come to the Lord in trust and obedience. We are left with the final promise that if we do, we will dwell with him in the newness to come and worship him forever. Today, as you hear his voice, do not harden your heart.

God stands before us in Jesus Christ and says, “Here I am.” Now we must respond to him. In this chapter, we see two responses to God from two kinds of people that lead to two different outcomes. The rebellious turn from him and go their own way. Their way leads to death. The faithful remnant live by faith and are promised the new world to come. Christ stands before you today. Follow him.

As we approach the end of Isaiah, it is as if an intercessor looks back on all that has been prophesied previously and offers up a loud cry to God, “Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down!” This is a prayer for revival. In light of the people’s sin and the discipline from the Lord, the grace extended and the call to repentance, and the promise of the Messiah who will bring a new and blessed future, the intercessor fervently prays for God to work for his people. The need of our day is for a visitation from the Lord and a new generation of believers who will give themselves to prayer.

Isaiah 61 prophesies the coming of an Anointed One who will preach good news. As history unfolds, we see this One is Jesus Christ. We also see that Jesus accomplished what he proclaimed. He ushered in the age of grace with its open door to all who repent and believe. New, spiritual life is the gift he offers in word and grants by grace. He opens eyes to see and sets souls free. First, let us receive this Preacher and respond to his word. Then, let us together be on mission with him in the proclamation of the good news.

Isaiah 60 gives us a vision of the future for God’s people. It is a future of glory as he shines upon us and dwells with us. Isaiah tells us to hold that vision firm in our minds because it provides the strength we need to press on toward the future. The vision gives the guidance we need to order our lives according to the future. It is the message we proclaim that calls people to Christ, who makes this future a reality. Isaiah 59 begins with sin, continues with sorrow, and ends in salvation. The message is that God graciously intervenes to save sinners and renew his people. This is a timeless message and broad in its relevance. Still today, the individual person needs to be saved, churches need to be renewed, and societies can experience spiritual awakening when God intervenes by his Word and Spirit. For this we pray.

In this Servant passage we again see Jesus Christ. He is revealed as the one who atoned for our sins. This means that he took upon himself the guilt and the penalty of our sin, though he himself had not sinned. By suffering the just penalty for sin, he removed it from all who repent and believe in him. Today we are called to see Jesus as the Suffering Servant who took away our sin, and ourselves as the sinners for whom he died. With this vision of Jesus and ourselves, we repent and believe in him. We find our assurance before God to live and to take the message of the church to the world.

The message of Isaiah 51 is to the remaining exiles who are seeking the Lord. The Lord is calling them to listen to his word for comfort and courage in their current state of sorrow. This chapter gives us another picture of the Servant of the Lord who is Jesus Christ. Jesus lived a life of listening to the Father and speaking his word to us. The contrast in these chapters is not between proud humans and humble humans. It is not between two kinds of humans at all. The contrast is between human pride and the grace of God. This passage is another exposure of the foolishness and futility of idolatry, for idols become burdens to those who trust them. Again God is exalted as Sovereign, for he will accomplish all that he purposes. The people of God are repeatedly exhorted to trust him alone, for only he can carry them through the crisis they face. The Lord had a message for his people and he raised up Isaiah to be his messenger. The convicting, cleansing, and calling work of the Lord in Isaiah’s life provides a pattern for Christians and the church today. Isaiah 6 records the vision that Isaiah saw of the Lord sitting on a throne high and lifted up. The Lord is revealed as King. But the chapter opens with news of the death of another king, Uzziah. The contrast between these two kings makes the point that there is one true King whose perfection is beyond our language to describe. He rules over all for all of eternity. To him we humbly bow and cry for mercy. He cleanses our sin and puts us in his service for the glory of his name. As the word unfolds we learn that his name is Jesus.

Peter warns his readers about the presence of false teachers in the Church. Peter describes their error, tactics, and effect on the Church. Peter also writes about the future judgment of those who would bring false teaching into the Church. There are two lessons for us. We should not be forgetful or naïve. At the end of the Apostle Peter’s first letter to the churches we hear the great promise that gives us hope in our present suffering. As sojourners in this world, our suffering comes in many forms. In this passage, the suffering is in the form of ongoing attacks and accusations of the devil that we must regularly resist by faith. The hope we have lies in the promise that our suffering here will give way to the work of God in our lives that will lead to the final state of shared glory with Christ our Savior. Let this promise pull you forward in faith and faithfulness to him.

The command to humble ourselves is based on the promise that God gives grace to those who do so. Humility is a posture of mind and heart that is consistent with the reality that God is Lord. It is an attitude toward God and others. It positions us to receive from the Lord the grace we need to sojourn together in this world. Let us humble ourselves before the Lord and toward each other.

Now, he is passing the exhortation on to elders who will do the same. In this passage, the elders are told what to do, and the spirit in which they are to do it. Jesus suffered in our place so that we would be made right with God, and is now exalted and above all things. Christians find strength in this Good News, knowing that He has rescued us from sin and death, and will come again to rescue us forever. While we wait for his return, Jesus is actively involved in our obedience through the Holy Spirit, helping us provide a witness to those around us.

Christian sojourners are citizens of Christ’s kingdom who live in the world. This will bring some level of suffering to the ones who remain faithful to Christ. When we suffer for righteousness' sake, there is a way to respond that brings honor to Christ, keeps us out of the cycle of evil, and is used by God to bring people to repentance and faith in him. Christ himself suffered in this way. We follow in his steps.

From the government to the workplace to marriage, Peter now turns to the congregation to exhort Christians to express honorable qualities among themselves. When Christians live together in this way, they glorify Christ, sustain one another through the sufferings of the sojourning life, and show unbelievers the honorable conduct that God’s grace produces in them. Let us pray that these qualities increase among us, and pursue them in obedience to Christ.

Marriage matters, and God calls husbands and wives to live honorably in their marriages. If we believe this, we will look and listen to what God has revealed in the Bible about marriage, receive what he said a marriage is, and conform our lives as husbands and wives to his will. In a culture of marital chaos and pain, Peter’s instructions come to us as order and sanity, healing and wholeness, and goodness and love.

The workplace provides a place to do good work, earn a living, and reflect the grace of God. When the workplace becomes a hardship for Christians, we have a particular way to live honorably by following the example of Christ. Being a Christian directs us in all of life because we now live for the Lord’s sake; seeking to do his will and to bring glory to him. This includes our life as citizens. Submission to God and to the law is required of Christians. Proper fear of God helps us fulfill our obligations to everyone, including the government. By doing so we will remove the opportunity to be slandered as evildoers.

On this Palm Sunday, we consider the entrusted life of Jesus. Jesus handed over to the Father his physical life and death, and the circumstances and events of his ministry. He submitted his will to the purpose the Father had for him on earth. He yielded up his soul to the Father’s care as he suffered. He gave all to God. He did this for us. By his obedience we are made right with God. He did this as an example for us to follow. Let us entrust our souls to the faithful Creator and Redeemer.

To be faithful to Christ in private and in public, sojourners must keep watch over their souls and remember they are being watched by others. This passage calls us to abstain from the desires of the sinful nature so we can see God. We are to keep our conduct honorable in the world so others can see the goodness of God’s ways and glorify him with us. These exhortations provide the beginning guidance for our sojourning life. This passage contains one of the greatest identity and purpose statements for the church in all the Bible. The church is God’s chosen people, ransomed by Christ to belong to him. The church serves God as priests who offer up the sacrifices of worship, prayer, and consecrated lives to him. The church proclaims God’s excellencies in the world as witnesses to his greatness and grace. May this vision of the church be ours at Grace Community Church.

The high calling of the sojourning Christian is to grow up into salvation. The way of spiritual growth is by the word of God. Like babies longing for and drinking milk, so we desire and feed upon God’s word. As we do, we grow up into the image of Christ knowing that in the end we will be like him. The command to love one another is one of the most basic commands in the Bible. But the reason and resources to love are not often understood. We love one another because we have been born again. We love one another from the power of a new and purified life. Love is a characteristic of a holy life. Love is produced by the living and abiding word of God. Today, we rejoice in the gift of new life and remember to love one another.

Holiness is a beautiful word. Applied to God, it refers to the perfection of all his attributes combined into a single description of his nature. God is holy. Since all of God’s attributes are perfectly good, his holiness is beautiful. How does holiness apply to us? By God’s mercy we have been born again to a living hope. Our hope is that God will make us holy. God is progressively purifying our faith and transforming our character to be like his Son Jesus Christ. In this sense, we are becoming holy. We, spiritually alive sojourners on this earth who have set our hope on the grace to God in Christ, are to be holy. Today we consider the call to be holy, why we are to pursue holiness, and how we become more and more holy until we meet the Lord.

In 1 Peter, hope is a powerful thing. It is the reason for being and doing. It motivates us to be and do. The call to set our hope fully on the grace of God in Christ is to be heeded because our lives depend on it. Setting our hope on God and his grace leads to life and holiness. Setting our hope somewhere else leads to sin and death. We have every reason to hope when we set our hope in the right place and on the right thing.

We are called to consider salvation. In the trials and testings of life, we may be tempted to neglect our salvation for some form of self-generated coping scheme or doubt our salvation because our circumstances are so difficult, or come to believe that our salvation has no bearing on real life. The truth is that our salvation is so great even angels want to understand it. It is the basis of our hope in hardship, and it shapes the way we live. Today, we consider salvation and encourage ourselves in the grace that will be brought to us at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

In the various trials of life that test our faith, from where does our joy come? Our joy comes from God; his great mercy toward us in Christ, his work in us to conform us to the image of Christ, and his promise to get us all the way to praise, glory, and honor through genuine faith in Christ. Today we see God’s mercy in the context of our trials. We gain a new perspective on our trials in light of God’s grace. May the Lord encourage our faithfulness to him through his word.

In the allegory of the vine and branches, Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure by bringing together the nature of their relationship with him, their mission in the world, and the ultimate priority for which they were called. Disciples of Jesus abide in him in spiritual union by faith. They share the life of Christ and produce what he calls fruit. The fruit of life in Christ is the evidence of his grace and power in the Christian living in the world. Abiding in Christ and bearing fruit bring glory to God. There is no better life lived on earth than the one connected to Christ, giving evidence of his life within, and bringing glory to God. There is no more helpful church than the one where people live this life together.

When Jesus was with his disciples on earth he kept them together. He corralled, corrected, and connected this group of strong-willed men when they didn’t get along. When Jesus left them, he gave them a new commandment to love one another as he loved them. Today we hear these words of Jesus and ask ourselves if we are obedient people. Do we know the love of Christ? Do we love one another? Can all people say of us that we are the disciples of Jesus because we love one another? May the new commandment, given a long time ago, fall fresh on our hearts today.

Jesus prepared the disciples for his departure by telling them that love and obedience are inseparable. Jesus loved the Father and became obedient to the point of death on the cross. The cross was also a display of love for us. Now, the love of Christ comes to us as forgiveness of sin and reconciliation to God, adoption as God’s children and glory to come. Christ’s love awakens our love for him and compels our obedience to his commands. If we love Jesus, we will obey him.

In the dark hour of his betrayal, Jesus spoke the words of faith in the sovereign hand and sure plan of God his Father. “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.” Jesus was to be glorified through the betrayal that would lead to the cross. This gives us the confidence that nothing can thwart the will of God to save us from our sins. We can live with hope that darkness does not overcome the light. When Jesus washed the disciples feet he communicated two messages. First, he washes us by forgiving our sins through his death on the cross. Second, we wash one another’s feet by becoming servants as he did. Imagine the beauty of a congregation where the humility to receive from Jesus and the concern to serve one another exists. Jesus said we are blessed if we do these things.

In what amounts to the final recorded words of Jesus’ public ministry, he is calling people to believe in him. It is important for us to hear what Jesus said, and also to understand why his words are placed at this point in the Gospel. The message of Jesus is that he stands before us as the One with all the authority of God, who gives eternal life, and who is to be believed. We hear this call to believe at the end of Jesus’ public ministry as a summary of everything he said and did while on earth. Nothing is more important than how we respond to Jesus.

The final sign that Jesus performed in John was to raise Lazarus from the dead. Jesus said that he did this for the glory of God, that he may be glorified through it. In this sign Jesus is revealed as the resurrection and the life. People come to believe in him and his disciples are strengthened in their faith. This sign also further confirms the unbelief in many and leads to the plot to kill Jesus. Today, may our vision of Christ’s glory become clear that by faith we will know him as the resurrection and the life.

Two things are happening in this passage. Jesus is leading the discussion to the revelation that he is the eternal Son of God, the “I am” who existed before Abraham and all others. And, Jesus is exposing the false assumption of the people that they are in right standing with God based on their physical descent from Abraham rather than on possessing the faith that Abraham had. As these two lines of discussion meet at the end of the passage, the clear message is that right standing with God comes only through faith in Jesus and reception of his word.

The conflict in John 7 between people and Jesus moves the narrative of this Gospel toward the cross. The conflict also provides the opportunity for us to stop and examine our hearts. Faith in Jesus receives him on his terms and accepts his words as truth. This kind of humility before Jesus leads to life.
