Often, we reduce the meaning of life to trite, overly-simplistic axioms. Despite our optimism and hardest efforts, the "good life" will never be found through human effort. There is only one Love that can and will lead us to greatest satisfaction, and that satisfaction is found only in Him.

Ultimately all of us must, at some point, determine what to do with Jesus and His claims. Some may respond like Pilate, curious about Jesus but in the end too hesitant and afraid to decide. Or some may respond like Herod, with a hard heart that only knows how to mock God. May we find grace to respond to Jesus with an open and willing heart.

The Real Jesus that we see in this passage is working out the plan of God’s salvation, and even in the midst of deep pain from the betrayal of one of His closest friends, He will not be stopped from fulfilling His plan and His promise.

View Details

What is the Lord's Supper, or Communion? Why do Christians place such importance upon this act of remembrance? In this passage we look at why Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper, why we need it, and what it is not.

Jesus wants you to understand who He really is, apart from any cultural understanding. And one of the ways He helps us see Him clearly is by removing all our cultural saviors and gods. When everything we've placed our trust in comes crumbling down around us, will we see Jesus for the Savior that He is?

View Details

Religious leaders tried to trap Jesus with a supposedly unanswerable question about taxes and the governing authorities. But in His masterful answer, He provides us a framework for understanding image, authority, and true allegiance.

Will you let Jesus build your life on the cornerstone of His authority? Or will you continue to resist, and in the end be crushed in judgment by Him?

View Details

View Details

What made Jesus so upset to the point that he felt compelled to angrily clear out the temple? It is because the nature of the relationship between God and His people is broken and needs to be set right. And it can only be accomplished through Jesus Himself filling the role of prophet, priest, king, and sacrifice.

View Details

When Jesus becomes king of your life, you will begin to develop His heart for the lost and broken world around us. Will you make Him your king and let Him begin the work of transforming your life from self-centered living to being part of a community on mission?

View Details

This is a sermon preached at Outward Church Silverton.

View Details

What is our response to the riches of the gospel? Is it simply for our own benefit? The more we look at Jesus, the more we see that He is calling us, and transforming us, from being people who are consumers - of the goods and services of our church, our friends, our community, to being people who are consumed - by Him.

View Details

Our view of who Jesus is shapes the way we live our lives. But many of us have an incorrect or incomplete view of what Jesus is like. In the familiar story of Zacchaeus, we see that Jesus invites us to see who He really is and what He's really about. Will you respond to His invitation and seek the real Jesus for yourself?

The disciples were blind to who Jesus really was. The crowd was blind to what was actually happening in their midst. Yet the man who was physically blind, in acknowledging his need and Jesus' lordship, proved to see more clearly than any of them. What can we learn from this healing miracle?

View Details

This is a sermon preached at Outward Church Silverton.

View Details

Each of us is asking, at some level - "how do I achieve the 'good life'?" The problem with this is that we see ourselves as the standard. And the more we look at Jesus and His invitation to us, the more we see that the standard should - and can - only come from Him.

View Details

The Gospel gives us both confidence and humility, which shapes the way we interact with others. As we learn to live in light of the grace we have received by fixing our gaze on the cross, we discover how to live in Christian community with one another.

View Details

The distinguishing mark of a Christian is a life led by the Holy Spirit. When we are led by the Spirit, our desire shifts from being selfishly motivated (by pride, shame, etc) to being motivated by the things of God.

View Details

Any teaching that claims that our salvation is dependent upon works is false, destructive and enslaving. Christ has freed us from the burden of the law. So how can we live in a way that is truly free?

View Details

This is a sermon preached at Outward Church Silverton.

View Details

Most of us default to the idea that we must be good in order to be accepted by God. But the blessing of God does not come to us through our goodness, obedience - or any work of our own. God's blessing comes to us because He loves us.

View Details

Worshiping anything other than God results in slavery. We are often led to believe that following our affections will lead to happiness, but unless we are letting the gospel shape our affection first and foremost on Jesus, we will find ourselves in a self-made prison.

We are prone to want to add to the Gospel. This is not only unnecessary and unhelpful - it's dangerous.

View Details

Jesus says that in order to inherit the Kingdom, we must become like children. What does He mean by this?

View Details

In the parable of the praying Pharisee and the tax collector, Jesus shows us that self-righteousness always prevents us from experiencing God's mercy.

View Details

Following Jesus means having a mindset that sees beyond the here and now. Are we living in light of the kingdom of God?

View Details

Like the leper healed from his devastating condition, so we have been healed from our sinful state by the grace of God. What will your response be?

View Details

God is not interested in the work of our hands if the condition of our heart is not right before Him. He alone is the righteous judge who sees and knows all.

View Details

The church is God's plan for reaching the world. To that end, we are committed to the pursuit of planting churches in a variety of ways. Hear how Outward is seeking to be faithful in this through some exciting new opportunities.

View Details

Through the parable of a shrewd manager, Jesus helps us see the wisdom of investing in things that are truly important.

View Details

In the parable of the prodigal son, we see a picture of a loving father lovingly entreating his selfish and self-righteous son to turn from his ways and embrace his father's riches. God our father looks at us and lovingly invites us to do the same.

View Details

From the story of the Prodigal Son, Jesus teaches that it's often our righteous acts - even more than our sin - that prevents us from coming to God and receiving His grace.

View Details

Jesus says that He receives those - and only those - who are sinful and lost. Not only does He accept us in our sinful condition, but it brings Him great joy to welcome and pardon us.

View Details

Jesus describes that discipleship involves a cost. Following Jesus can not be on our terms, but on His - and His terms involve complete, total surrender.

View Details

Jesus invites you to dine in His presence with Him. His invitation is based not on what He wants from you, but what He wants for you.

View Details

You and I crave recognition that comes from pride. But Jesus meets us with mercy.

View Details

Have you considered what it means to truly follow Jesus? The way is narrow, but the reward is great.

View Details

Before we even know to ask for healing, Jesus sees us and knows what we need.

View Details

What kind of fruit is your life bearing? Jesus uses a parable to call us to repentance.

Do you anticipate the coming of Jesus? Do you live your life in light of His promised return?

View Details

Jesus teaches us that overcoming anxiety is not about finding ways to stop being anxious. It has everything to do with understanding where our treasure lies.

View Details

What's most important to you in life? For so many of us, our "main thing" is something that we can't take with us.

View Details

Do we have a right fear of God? What does it mean to view and accept God in this way?

View Details

We become what we love. If we pursue and delight ourselves in the light of God's presence and power, then that is what we will be filled with.

View Details

When it comes to responding to God in your life, what are you waiting for? Are you looking for a sign, some sort of indication that the time is right? A sign has already been given, His name is Jesus, and the time to respond to Him is right now.

View Details

When we invite Jesus to overcome the power of sin in our lives, He is faithful and will do it. But if we simply stop with the eradication of sin, those places in our life will inevitably become filled in with something else. Filling our life with the pursuit of Jesus is the only way to prevent sin and pride from overtaking us.

View Details

Prayer is dependence on God, and Jesus teaches us that this is the best place to be.

View Details

Most of us would agree that we should be loving toward others. But when we get into the specifics of who that includes, we realize that, like the good Samaritan, this often means loving the people who are not simply difficult, but the most difficult. How do you love the people who you love to hate?

View Details

We rejoice in the things we see God doing around us. But do we recognize that the greatest work He has accomplished in our life is the saving work of His salvation? Do we rejoice in this?

View Details

Is your heart captivated by a kingdom built by man? Or is your faith in Jesus and the kingdom He is establishing? What does it mean to have our identity rooted in Him as the greatest?

View Details

Everything God does, from His blessing to His rebuke, is done out of His love for us.

View Details

Are you hungry for the presence of God? When Jesus was transfigured on the mountain in the presence of His disciples, it affected them in 3 ways. How does being in the presence of God affect us?

View Details

Whose kingdom are you living for? Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, but what does this look like? What does it mean to take up our cross and follow Him? Living for the kingdom of Jesus requires a full transformation of our mind, our wills, and our emotions.

View Details

Have you met Jesus in your desolation Or are you expecting Him to bring you out of it?

View Details

Regardless of who you are or what you've done, Jesus stands ready to welcome you.

View Details

A desperate woman had tried everything she could think of to find healing. But only Jesus had the power, authority - and most importantly, the desire - to give her what she needed. That woman is all of us. Where has your searching led you? You will never be complete until it leads you to Him.

View Details

Many of feel that we must stay far from Jesus because then He would see who we truly are. We fear that when our true hearts are revealed it will lead to suffering. But it isn't until we allow God to graciously deal with our true selves, through brokenness and repentance, that we will truly ever be close to Him.

View Details

When the storms of life come, they reveal to us where our faith is placed. Are we listening to and trusting Jesus, or is our faith placed in our ability to control the circumstances of our life?

View Details

Are we inviting the Word of God to speak into and have authority in our lives?

View Details

Jesus wants to plant the seeds of His grace and mercy into the soil of our life. Often He uses difficulty and hardship to plow the soil, preparing us to receive Him. Are we willing to invite Him to do this work?

View Details

Have you experienced the life change that only Jesus can bring about? Or have you settled for the counterfeit security of religious effort? God wants to bring you freedom in the way that only He can.

View Details

Are we aware of the depths to which our sin is offensive to Jesus? More significantly - are we aware of the depth of His love in spite of our sin? If we are ready to receive the love He has for us, first we must allow ourselves to become offended by Him.

View Details

Fear often drives us to stay busy. But Jesus dispels the myth that busyness equals faithfulness, and invites us to a new and better way.

View Details

We struggle to tolerate the idea of a God who actually loves and has compassion on us. When we come face to face with this level of love it can be so disorienting, so imposing and disruptive, that our response is actually one of resistance and fear. But we must realize that we were built for this love.

View Details

Do we believe that God's Word alone has the authority to change our world? Do we believe that it contains all the hope we need when the world breaks around us?

View Details

What is your life built upon? Jesus teaches that our response to the challenges of life is determined by the type of foundation we have laid. Ultimately, He is calling us to build on Him - but are we willing to go deep enough to let Jesus be our foundation?

View Details

Jesus teaches that our works are inextricably linked to what we treasure. There are always two dynamics at play - the outer life (the fruit) and the inner life (the root). If our life is to resemble the description of what a follower of Jesus looks like, He must first become our treasure.

View Details

"Judge not” is a favorite sentiment expressed by Christians and non-Christians alike. But Jesus shows us that our inherent resistance to judgment is an indication of a deeper reality. We must understand that we are always being taught by something or someone. Maturity in Christ means asking honestly who we are being taught/judged by, and choosing to submit ourselves to the right judgments of God.

View Details

When it comes to living under authority, our pride often gets in the way of humble submission. But the Church is to be a witness to the kingdom of God and how authority ultimately should be exercised. When we humble ourselves and trust God’s plan, we find that God graciously relieves our anxiety.

View Details

We often view suffering as something to be avoided at all costs. But there is purpose in our trials. God uses them to refine us, to make us into the type of people He is wanting to create, and bring us to glory.

View Details

How are we loving one another? And not just those who are easy to love or who look and think like us, but those who are difficult? At the end of the day, will we be known for how we loved and served selflessly, trusting God to supply us with the grace we need to live in this way?

View Details

What marks a Christian apart from others? Is it simply our good works? If our motivation toward good works comes from ourselves, we will eventually find ourselves operating from a place of shame or pride. But if our motivation is rooted in the Gospel, we will discover the freedom in knowing that our good works have nothing to do with us at all.

View Details

Our world is broken and reeling from the reality of injustice. Fully aware of our inability to save ourselves, Jesus - the Righteous - came to save the unrighteous. And this injustice is the only true means to genuine and lasting peace.

View Details

Our spiritual unity, and ultimately our Christian witness, is found in the way we respond to suffering for the glory of God.

View Details

The way of Jesus often puts us in conflict with prevailing cultural norms. This includes God’s specific design for men and women in the home. Where we can often view ourselves as “little gods” deserving of honor, Jesus frees us to live in ways that honor one another as humble servants.

View Details

Our pride ultimately is a restricting authority that enslaves us in a mindset of self-preservation. Christ frees us from that authority and enables us to live in humble submission to our earthly authorities.

View Details

Our identity - “who we are” - is often rooted in what we can accomplish and produce - “what we do.” But when we come to realize that God has chosen us as His child, we discover that both our identity and purpose comes from Him.

View Details

On Good Friday, we look at the incredible injustice of Christ crucified.

View Details

On Easter weekend, we look at the incredible injustice of our resurrection, made possible by Jesus' resurrection.

View Details

Christ-centered love is not conditional. In fact, loving those who have not earned or deserved our love is perhaps the most Christlike thing we can do; in doing so we emulate the very love Jesus showed for us on the cross.

View Details

Jesus teaches that life in the kingdom of God runs counter-cultural to the prevailing wisdom of the world. Is our contentment, joy, and sense of worth attained through Jesus? Or have we fooled ourselves into thinking that we can find these things elsewhere?

View Details

Through a story of a man healed on the Sabbath, Luke continues to show the authority Jesus has as God. Ultimately, Jesus brought rest to the man with the withered hand through Himself, to display that He alone provides rest in a way the Sabbath never could.

View Details

Levi the tax collector responded immediately to the call of Jesus on his life - to the indignation and frustration of the religious people around Jesus. Are you tired of working hard to try to "get" Jesus only to come up short? He offers you a simple invitation: "stop trying."

View Details

Two different stories of healing - of a leper and a paralyzed man - show the problem, process, and possibility of faith in Jesus.

View Details

So often in life, we settle for being content with what amounts to nothing more than good advice. It's not until we come to a point of total loss and desperation as Peter did, that we realize what we actually need from Jesus is a new life.

View Details

Jesus' healing miracles display that He alone has the power and authority to establish the Kingdom of God.

View Details

Jesus’ earthly ministry was met with mixed responses from the people who believed they knew him the best, yet in reality didn’t actually know him at all. Has our familiarity with religion made us blind to our own captivity to sin?

View Details

John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus' public ministry by preaching repentance. Until we acknowledge the necessity of God exposing our sin and convicting us of our need for Him, we will never see the fruit of true conversion in our life.

View Details

Luke describes the significance of Christ's arrival from multiple perspectives. Through each perspective, we see testimonies to Jesus' sovereign identity, plan of salvation, and call to repentance and faith.

View Details

At times in life, the question of whether God is actually good or not can lead us to places of doubt or uncertainty. It's not until we actually find our refuge in Him and "taste" Him that we can have confident assurance that God is truly good.

View Details

Jesus brings peace to those who cannot buy it, earn it, or deserve it.

View Details

Zechariah’s act of faith and subsequent song of praise illustrates the power of God at work in the way each of us is moved from unbelief to worship. Luke’s emphasis on the supernatural shows us how God is in the details of every aspect of our salvation.

View Details

We often look at Mary, the mother of Jesus, as an almost divine figure. But, what we find out is that she expresses the faith necessary for every person who trusts in Christ.

View Details

Luke lays out his purpose in writing an account of the life of Jesus - that we may be certain of the Gospel.

View Details

God’s power is put on display most evidently through our weakness. As we invite Him to renew us by his grace each day, we gain an eternal perspective on God’s plan for our transformation.

View Details

We look for opportunities to articulate the story of Jesus in a way that boldly testifies to the grace and love of Christ. This begins in our homes and continues in friendships made inside and outside of the church.

View Details

We are committed to seeking the good of those around us. Sacrificial service in the home, the church, and the city demonstrates God's heart for human flourishing through the establishment of a gospel culture.

View Details

Disciples of Jesus are committed to radical generosity. Joyfully sharing our time, energy, and resources displays an understanding that all we own belongs to God, and reflects how Jesus has been generous with us.⁣

View Details

Gospel submission leads to passionate faithfulness.⁣ When we devote our lives to Jesus' lordship through a lifestyle of worship, He becomes increasingly glorious to us and our desires begin to align with His.

View Details

Loving Jesus includes being marked by Gospel community. This means the body of Christ - the church - is an essential, integral aspect of our faith. God's intent is for His story to be understood and applied in the context of other believers.

View Details

The story of the Prodigal Son is actually the story of two sons. Each brother - one rebellious, one religious - serves as a model for how each of us seeks to earn the favor of our heavenly Father.

View Details

Loving Jesus starts with knowing and being marked by His story. What is the story of Jesus, or what we refer to as 'the Gospel'? How does knowing and embracing His story free us from a life of sin and shame?

Genesis is about beginnings - from first things to first humans. It reveals to us the origin of the people of earth and the origin of the people of God. Most of all, it shows us the Creator God, His care for creation and how we should relate to Him. Any attempt to attribute worth to humanity without God as its central, defining, purpose is ultimately hopeless. In Genesis, we see the intent of the Creator and find meaning in life.

Any attempt to attribute worth to humanity without God as its central, defining, purpose is ultimately hopeless. In Genesis, we see the intent of the Creator and find meaning in life.

Daniel has another conversation with King Nebuchadnezzar; the outlook doesn't look good. God was relentlessly pursuing King Nebuchadnezzar and was going to do whatever it takes to become ruler of his life. It is the same story for you and I.

It is the classic story of the fiery furnace...Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego choose to worship the one true God rather than bow to the king's idol, and God delivers them from certain execution. But that's not the whole story. We find ourselves in a similar situation today - worship one of society's many gods, or remain faithful to the one and only true God. What can we learn from how these three men responded?

Christmas represents a time of togetherness, peace, and joy – feelings that have seemed foreign lately in our culture. There are divisions, many that run deep, separating our communities and families. Scars of racism have left an undeniable impact in our neighborhoods. Many marriages, once vibrant and thriving, are marked by selfishness and hostility. Political differences have severed close friendships.

We are a divided people longing for togetherness – for true joy.

And soon it will be Christmas.

Christmas is more than simply a cultural holiday, much more than a temporary reprieve from the real divisions that separate us. Christmas is a celebration of the tangible, lasting hope in a God who transcended the divide between Himself and mankind to offer real, lasting peace.

As we seek to understand our story as part of God’s narrative for our lives, James helps us discover that the evidence for genuine faith comes not from what we feel, but in allowing our head, heart, and hands to be transformed in a way that leads to action.

The topic of sexuality is a major issue in our culture today that deeply divides us. But the problem is not “culture”, as in “all those people outside of the Church.” Humanity as a whole, Christian and non, religious and irreligious, are all in the same boat. Every single one of us is messed up when it comes to sex. We as the Church must first be confronted with our own brokenness; then, and only then, will we be able to extend the grace of Jesus Christ to our broken world as we seek to answer the question: Can we design our sex life, or is there a Designer who has created sex?
