The next page in the songbook of Hebrews is Psalm 22, referenced in Hebrews 2: 5-18, where Rory shows us a harrowing yet beautiful picture of the cross. This Psalm, written so many years before the coming of Christ, presents a truly awe-inspiring account of the suffering saviour. Have you looked at the cross lately? Come and see it like never before.

Continuing our series in Esther, Pete preaches from Esther 3:1-15. In this passage we see Haman enter centre stage, and he looks to have all the favourite and authority that King Xerxes can give - except for the refusal of one man, Modecai, to bow the knee to him. As Haman becomes obsessed with punishing not only Mordecai but all his people, the Jews, too, he creates a horrendous plan to see the entire Jewish people wiped out in a single day, and sends the decree to all the kingdom and the Citadel - much to their bewilderment. As Pete unpacks these verses, we see the shallowness of Haman’s power, the courage of Mordecai, the signs that God is still completely in control, and what this all means for us today.

This week we take a break from our evening series in Matthew’s gospel, as Tom takes us on a deeper dive of Hebrews 3:1-19, to further develop some thoughts on the practical command to ‘encourage one another daily’, in this book of the Bible that was written to Christians. Sin is deceitful and hardens us towards God and towards one-another, which is why it’s all the more important that strive to meet together and encourage one another in the faith.
This is a weary age. Through Hebrews 3: 12 - 4: 16, Pete presents us with one of the most oddly difficult aspects of the Christian's life: rest. Contrary to popular belief, true rest is not idleness, nor is joy found in dreams. There is only one treatment for the weary heart, and one saviour who provides it free of charge.
Josh continues our evening series in Matthew’s gospel, preaching from Matthew 25:1-13. In this passage Jesus tells the parable of the ten virgins (or bridesmaids, in those days) all of whom are waiting for the bridegroom to arrive, but not all of them are really prepared. The modern use of the word ‘vocation’ puts it in the category of a ‘job’ or a ‘career’. Sadly, it has lost its original meaning of being a ‘calling’ i.e. God has called you to a certain life.
Tim Keller puts it this way:

There is a small leak which, over time, causes the warning light to come on and the engine to chug lethargically. It carries on like that for a while and then finally stops altogether. My approach to this problem has usually been to ignore taking it to the experts, but to keep topping up the coolant system with water, hoping it will get me through the next journey.

We are starting a new series this evening, in which we are looking at the different names of God in the scriptures.
The first name we’re going to look at is El Shaddai, God Almighty.
This is a fascinating name because it is only used 7 times in the whole Bible. It was first used in the Book of Genesis, when God appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as ‘El Shaddai’. The name Yahweh, the true God who saves, was not used until the book of Exodus when God revealed himself to Moses:
Exodus 6:2-3
“God also said to Moses, ‘I am the Lord. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord [Yahweh] I did not make myself known to them”.
So, what does El Shaddai mean? Why did he only appear to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as El Shaddai, and what can you and I take away from knowing that name?

Alan Titchmarsh, a celebrity TV gardener, was on the radio this week, and he said, ‘The garden is a saviour.’ He was commenting on the good news that this week garden centres are being reopened. There is also the familiar saying:’ You are nearer to God in a garden than anywhere else on earth.’
In the Bible there is a lot of ‘God and garden’ associations. The first meeting of humans with God was in the Garden of Eden. Here we see that God is relational as he walks with Adam and Eve and takes joy in his creativity.
In this passage from John’s Gospel, Jesus is in a garden and he is revealing who he is. In the garden Jesus asks a question, twice: “Who is it you want?” And “Who do you seek?”

The phrase ‘Brits abroad’ usually refers to the embarrassing behaviour of British people on holiday. Most of us have probably known the embarrassment of seeing fellow Brits ‘behaving badly.’ This sense of embarrassment comes from the instinctive feeling that the British should act as ambassadors for our nation, instead of bringing shame and ridicule to it.
These days, our identity is not as wedded to our nation as it once was, but it is true that if we are citizens of a country, our behaviour says something about our nation. And in the ancient world this was definitely true.

This is the penultimate sermon on the ‘I am’ statements of Jesus.
If I ask the question ‘Where are you now?’ there are lots of possible answers.
For example, one could answer from a location perspective e.g. ‘I’m in my lounge’, or ‘I’m in Kingston’. Or one could focus on an age bracket and define oneself from an age perspective. E.g.’ I’m in my teens’. Or, it could be to do with health e.g. ‘I’m in good shape’. Or one could answer it from a mental health perspective: e.g. ‘I’m in a good place at the moment’.
However, if you ask a Christian ‘Where are you now?’ the first and foremost answer must be ‘I am in Christ.’

Last week we were reminded of the fact that Paul’s extreme sufferings in prison, far from preventing him from following through his gospel plans, actually served to advance them.
If we use the analogy of a game of Monopoly, the player who is landed with the ‘Go to Jail’ card, has to follow that instruction immediately, and has to abandon all strategies in the game for three turns. The player is stuck in jail, totally ineffective until they are released to continue the game.

Take the chameleon, Mr Parsons, as an example. TV viewers observed his keepers trying to pair him up with a female chameleon, but he was very slow, not only because he had arthritis, but he was also very particular. We begin a new series in Philippians looking at how we might respond to the current lockdown. Tom speaks on how Paul rejoiced in the truths of the gospel despite his isolation in Philippians 1:1-11.
It was written while Paul was physically in lock down in a prison in Rome. Soon after this, as Paul already knew, he would face execution. But, for Paul, even more distressing than this, was his separation from the churches that he loved. So it is remarkable that this is one of the most joyful letters in the New Testament.
From an earthly perspective this letter makes no sense.
But from a heavenly perspective it makes every sense.
For every believer, this letter helps us; it brings the word of God to us; and it gives us lessons about how to remain joyful and confident in Christ, even in lockdown.
1. Remember Who we are in Jesus.

We are currently considering the ‘I am’ statements of Jesus. So far, we have looked at: ‘I am the bread of life’, ‘I am the light of the world ‘ and ‘I am the resurrection and the life.’
These are astonishing claims, and we must take them seriously, because the phrase ‘I AM’ echoes the name that God revealed to Moses in Exodus Chapter 3 where God said: ‘I AM who I AM.’
In the verses we are looking at tonight, from John Chapter 10, Jesus says, “I am the gate.”
What’s interesting about this, is that in the previous chapter, we have been told the story of the blind man, whose sight was restored by Jesus. This miracle caused such a commotion in the community that the blind man was brought before the Pharisees. Instead of being amazed and rejoicing at this wonderful miracle, these Pharisees grumbled that the healing had been done on the Sabbath, which ‘proved’ to them that Jesus could not be from God.

However, John ends this letter by saying: “Dear children keep yourself from idols.” Full stop.
This may seem strange but it is in fact a great way to sign off.

There are so many idols around us and we are prone to fall for the lies of idols. Any vision of God other than the vision of God disclosed in the historic apostolic Jesus is an idol. Idols destroy. They are ‘false news’.
At best the world’s idols misrepresent what is alive. They bring death not truth. So we must avoid them.

Chris continues our series on the 7 "I AM" statements in the book of John, speaking on Jesus as the Light of the world in John 8:12-17.
Last week we considered the first ‘I am’ statement of Jesus. ‘I am the bread of life’.
We looked back in the book of Exodus to see the depth of meaning in that statement. In the same way that the Israelites in the wilderness, received manna to sustain them, we receive, and are nourished by Jesus Christ.
This evening, we are considering his statement in John 8:12
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
These words form a biblical concept that runs through the whole of scripture.
At the very beginning of Genesis, in Chapter 1:3 we read:
“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.”

This statement follows one of Jesus’ most famous miracles, and we can only marvel at the sheer scale of this miracle.
This is a ‘Throwback Miracle’,
John 6 is full of Exodus language. ‘I AM’ is taken from Exodus 3 where God reveals himself to Moses, by saying: ‘I AM who I AM.’ He is God, without beginning and end, eternal, unchanging, the source of life.
If Jesus had just used this phrase once, we could dismiss it as an accident. But he uses it all the time. He knows exactly what he is doing by taking the name of the eternal God to himself.

The chief priests posed their questions hoping to give the impression that they were simply investigating the truth. But what they were really looking for was an excuse to refute the authority of God and carry on in their disobedience. They were ultimately looking for an excuse to put Jesus to death.
