Chris 'Play' Martin of Kid n Play is among the hip-hop pioneers working to preserve the history of a movement that captured a nation. He has a documentary called "And I Danced" that highlights the stories of the dancers in our favorite music video like Madonna's "Vogue."
Martin had joined with Compton's Marq "DJ Cli-n-tel" Hawkins lead singer of 'The World Class Wreckin Cru' (w/ Dr. Dre pre-NWA) and author of his autobiography. Both are part of building the Universal Hip Hop Museum in New York.

“You’ll be missed, King and Princess...” It’s a line in a song by recording artist Yung Muusik in honor of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi. As fans grieve the loss of the late Laker great and all eight on board a chopper that crashed Sunday, artists are sharing their grief through the arts.
Yung Muusik, who is still building his music career, was attending the Grammys when he got the news of the crash. He is one voice in a series of Angelinos reflecting on this tragic loss.

Much to my delight, the 90210 has a new face in fashion. Glaudi by Johana Hernandez on Brighton Way is home to haute couture beautiful gowns, wedding dresses, and red carpet show-stoppers. Hernandez is dressing a Who's Who of gorgeous Latinas and is a true success story from her hometowns of Compton and Downey.
The young Salvadoran is no stranger to fashion. Her parents both worked in the garment industry and she grew up wearing dresses handmade by her mom. Hernandez attended FIDM in downtown Los Angeles and opened her first store in Downey.
Glaudi is named after her mom, Gladis.
I was thrilled to see her Beverly Hills success. She opened in December 2019, and in January 2020, is holding trunk shows. Did I mention that Hernandez is only 33 years old?
I first met her at LA Fashion Week Powered by Art Hearts. Her designs stunned on the runway, but it was her backstory that spoke volumes. She says she is the first woman of Salvadoran descent to show at Paris fashion week.
Hernandez worked her way up in the fashion industry working for name designers. She has never forgotten her roots and helped fund a school in El Salvador. Her parents and her brothers both work for the Glaudi Collection company.

In an era of community policing, LAPD's Hollenbeck division is ahead of the curve with it's Hollenbeck PAL program. HPAL was founded in 1992 in the heart of Boyle Heights. HPAL, long known for its positive interactions for kids and law enforcement, is now expanding with mental health services. As the LAPD marks 150 years, we highlight Hollenbeck PAL and the police officers attached to it. I'm joined by Dr. Andre Panossian (Plastic Surgeon and his wife Jill Simonian, The CEO of Mending Kids Isabelle Fox, and patient Stephanie Jacinto.
Mending Kids is working in 64 countries (including the US). Dr. Andre Panossian whose specialty is facial paralysis has been on multiple missions. He just got back from Armenia.
He also does the Mending Kids Hometown Mission where a group of surgeons volunteer for a day in LA doing 18 outpatient surgeries in one day). And he’s also on the MK Board.
Wife Jill Simonian & their kids accompanied him to Armenia. She’s also a volunteer extraordinaire & fundraiser for MK.
Isabelle Fox is the Executive Director for Mending Kids. She started as a volunteer and has been on upwards of 40 missions.
Stephanie Jacinto Patient 20 years old. Patient from HomeTown Mission (Hometown mission surgeries are for people or procedures that fall through the cracks. Not like the life-saving procedures we do around the world)
On October 13, 2019, Mending Kids hosts a fundraising hike. "Hike to Mend" is a 5-mile hike to illustrate the distance most of our patients & parents must walk to find medical care.

From the North Hollywood shootout to the kidnapping of Patty Hearst, to the first LAPD chief. Roberto (Bob) Alaniz has stories to tell. He's an LAPD sergeant and on the Board of Directors for the Los Angeles Police Museum and the Los Angeles City Historical Society.

The A&E channel is airing a documentary series that features a Los Angeles non-profit, Kidsave.
Joining us on this podcast is Kidsave CEO Randi Thompson and Jessica and Mauricio Mora who opened up their home to a teen in foster care, Ty Bailey.

Have you ever wanted to be a police officer?
We learn why four LAPD officers love their job! Three are from LAPD’s recruitment unit and a fourth represents a mentoring program called Bigs in Blue. All four share stories of life on and off the job and why they are proud to be LAPD.
Olympic & Bundy podcast host Christine Devine first met Captain Aaron McCraney at the Taste of Soul on Crenshaw and then again at the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Executives, ABLE. He was invited to do the podcast and bring along some fellow officers. Christine also met LAPD Sergeant Keith Mott after seeing him profiled on Fox 11 News along with the Bigs in Blue program.
The podcast was pre-recorded over the summer, but as we kick off September there is this announcement of an upcoming LAPD hiring event helping future officers get on the job.

Women of Coast is about women helping women. The VIP event by Orange County’s Coast Magazine was created to combat the "Real Housewives" view of women in Orange County. More positive research unveiled at the international conference for the Alzheimer's Association confirmed what has long been suspected, Alzheimer's spreads differently in the brain's of women vs men.
Two-thirds of all Alzheimer's cases are in women, and in the early stages of the disease, may go undiagnosed because women tend to do better on verbal tests than men.

LAPD Officer Deon Joseph not along works amongst the homeless, he's been called their "guardian angel."
Joseph has worked downtown LA's Skid Row area for 21 years and has dedicated his life to being a "champion for the homeless." He shares his story on this episode of the Olympic & Bundy Podcast with Christine Devine. He also brought along a friend. Colleen Granderson was once homeless and now works side by side with Joseph and the LAPD. New 2019 numbers show LA City's homeless population has grown by 16%. Skid Row is one of the nation's worst areas for homelessness.
It's a neighborhood of tent cities alongside service organizations, and rescue mission and shelters. Joseph is a Senior Lead Officer. He says his team has helped 100 homeless people to get off the streets.
He's also critical of current policy on LA's homeless crisis that has in his words left officers with "their hands tied." Joseph recently released his memoir, "Stepping Across The Line, A Skid Row Cop's Story."

A new app that launched this week in Los Angeles gives users instant access to information about real-time crime and other emergency situations reported to 911 in their immediate surroundings
“Citizen” provides updates to incidents happening around them, along with user-generated livestreaming. The app’s central operations team monitors publicly available information — such as police scanner chatter — and pushes out notifications to users within a certain radius of the crime or emergency incident.
A user in New York credited the app for alerting him about a fire in his own apartment building, according to the New York Post.
Peter Donald, the app’s head of policy and communication, joined us on Olympic & Bundy to talk about the overall goal of the app, what it does, how it intersects with law enforcement and a lot more.

Cheryl Hunter is a bestselling author, speaker and expert on resiliency and helping others overcome adversity.
While traveling in Europe as a teenager, she was abducted by two criminals who held her captive before eventually leaving her for dead.
Cheryl survived this traumatic experience, but even though she was physically free, she says she still felt very captive in her mind.
In the episode, Cheryl talks about this life-changing trauma that happened when she was only 18, how she slowly refocused her life and found freedom.
Cheryl's healing process ultimately connected her to her life mission of empowering people to rise above past trauma. She created an educational framework, which aims to teach others how to break free from whatever holds them captive.
Cheryl gave a TED Talk in Santa Monica, in which she shared a powerful Japanese principle she learned along the way in her healing: wabi-sabi.
The concept of wabi-sabi is accepting your imperfections and making the most of life.
“The beauty of any object lies in the flaws of that object,” she says, telling others to claim their wabi-sabi.

Adam Wasserman is an attorney and managing partner of Education Justice Law Group who specializes in helping children with special needs and parents of those children receive the extra attention in school that they are legally entitled to.
On the episode, we talk about ADD and ADHD in young people, and schools suggesting to parents to medicate their children – which he says should never happen.
“If schools are recommending that your child needs medication, what that really means is the child’s not getting the services they’re supposed to be getting at the school,” he said.
Wasserman says he also took this kind of medication growing up and credits a lot of his success in life to it.
He points out, however, that parents should never go to a meeting at a school and have the school talk about medication.
“The choice to take medicine is a very private choice. It’s a family choice, and it should be done after careful consultation with people trained in the field to do that," Wasserman said. "Here’s the thing, schools are not allowed to diagnose children with anything. That’s the wrong word. School’s talk in terms of eligibility, meaning, ‘This child reads too slow. He’s eligible to get reading help.’ Not, ‘This child reads too slow. There’s a problem with his brain.’”
Wasserman’s Education Justice Law Group covers all of California and represents children and young adults from age 3 through high school who are eligible for special education.
In the episode, we also discuss the difference between IEPs (Individualized Education Plan) and 504 Plans.
He says he founded the law group when he realized many students were not accessing their educational rights they have under state and federal law.

Matthew Day (@mattday_from_thebay) is a dancer who has touched stages around the world with artists like Jennifer Lopez, Will.i.am, Kendrick Lamar, Ricky Martin and more.
Most recently, he danced across the 2019 Grammys stage during J.Lo’s Motown tribute.
He talks about everything from his childhood, growing up with a single mother outside of San Francisco and losing a close friend as a teen, to moving to Los Angeles at 22 and living out of his car.
Matthew says he has seen his fair share of struggles, but has also been exposed to the true definition of financial wealth while traveling on various tours.

Andi Lew wrote the new book "#instalovers: Digital dating, DM disasters & love stories," where she dives into the world of dating on apps and social media.
Modern dating means more options – lots of options. Potential love interests are only one swipe or DM away. Having too many choices can prevent people from settling down, as there may always be a better option just around the corner.
Dating multiple people at once has become the new norm, and Lew says you can't presume exclusivity when you start seeing someone.
She spent four years "undercover" doing research for the book, going through her own good and bad experiences to better understand dating culture in 2019 and how to turn texting into dates.
Lew also talks about how Instagram has become an unofficial dating platform. Going on a "liking spree" or sliding into someone's DMs are all part of the netiquette.
Josh Metz, marketing director of Tinder, wrote the foreword for the book.
"Not only will Andi teach you how to 'swipe right for more than one night,' but she also teaches you how to be a better version of yourself," Metz writes.

Peter Lorimer is co-host of the Netflix series "Stay Here," which helps property owners turn their AirBNB listings into beautiful moneymakers.
The show is a fun mix of design, business and travel.
He, along with design guru Genevieve Gorder, traveled around the country and transformed short-term rental spaces like a houseboat in Seattle and a swanky Malibu beach pad.
Lorimer says the key to becoming a "super host" is to view the property like a small hotel. Make everything convenient for the guest, and store items in places that make sense so they won't have to go looking for them (think towels, sheets, utensils, etc.).
He also says small touches can go a long way when it comes to a guest's experience. Keeping higher-end toiletries stocked, champagne in the fridge and local travel guides for entertainment ideas can make all the difference.
Peter, originally from the U.K., started as a music producer and eventually began investing in property around Los Angeles. He now runs the real estate agency PLG Estates, which he launched in 2010.

Chef and restaurateur Michael Schlow is the man behind Cavatina in the Sunset Marquis Hotel in Los Angeles, as well as several other restaurants across the country.
Schlow has competed on "Bravo's Top Chef Masters," made pasta with Jimmy Fallon and was even named “Best Chef in the Northeast” by the James Beard Foundation.
He started as a dishwasher at age 14, and after getting a baseball scholarship in college, decided instead to enroll in culinary school.
Throughout his career, Schlow has learned every position in the restaurant industry and now oversees a dozen restaurants and counting.
When it comes to implementing his values into a growing company, he says surrounding yourself with like-minded people is paramount to success.
Schlow aims to hire people of all different skill-sets, but says all need to be "happy people" who will excel in customer service.

Leo Birenberg is a composer for film and television, whose music has been featured in series like Dreamworks' "Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny" and YouTube’s "Cobra Kai."
He's contributed additional music to a films like "Frozen," "Edge of Tomorrow," "The Peanuts Movie," and many more.
Leo grew up playing music in Chicago, and after attending NYU, moved west to Los Angeles.
He eventually crossed paths with the award-winning composer Christophe Beck, working as a writer, arranger and producer. Learning from Beck, Leo says he was able to learn how to "solve musical puzzles."
He compares composing music for film and television to extended problem solving. Trying to figure out the right music and timing in order to further convey a feeling or emotion to the audience.

Mona S. Edwards has been working as a courtroom sketch artist in Los Angeles for more than 25 years.
She's illustrated scenes from some of the most high profile trials and drawn many well known people, including Michael Jackson, O.J. Simpson, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Pharrell, Lindsay Lohan, the Menendez brothers and more.
She began her career as a fashion illustrator, and having an interest in news, began using her illustration skills in the courtroom.
Mona has also created sketch art for television and film and taught fashion sketching classes at UCLA and other academic institutions.

If you live in Los Angeles, you may have seen a stencil of a man wearing a hoodie, hunched over and glued to a phone screen.
They are stenciled all over the city, left behind by street artist Thrashbird. He calls the man "The Clone," and often puts them intentionally on the ground as a subtle message for people walking and staring at their own phones.
Thrashbird is known for his street art that uses satire and humor to highlight things in our culture -- like reliance on technology, advertising overload, and our society's obsession with fame and social media.
He says his art is a mirror to himself as much as anyone else in society.
His "artistic update" on Paul Smith's iconic pink wall on Melrose Avenue, a popular spot for tourists and social media influencers to take photos, recently received a lot of news coverage when he wrote across the wall in giant letters, "GO F-CK UR SELFIE."

Darius Arya is an archaeologist, professor and host in several documentaries for Discover, History and National Geographic channels.
Most recently -- he explored three of the most fascinating cities of the ancient world, Athens, Cairo and Istanbul, for PBS's Ancient Invisible Cities.
Since 2002, Darius has been the executive director of the nonprofit American Institute for Roman Culture, leading field school excavations and study programs.
He's also currently a guest scholar at the Getty Conservation Institute at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, doing research on the role of new media for heritage preservation and promotion.

Derek Warburton is the co-owner and creative director of LAPALME Magazine.
He's worked as a stylist for celebrities like Beyonce, Jessica Alba and Miranda Kerr, travels across the country doing a lot of fashion-related talk show appearances, he owns his own jewelry line called Mr. Warburton and is about to launch a new magazine under the same name.
Derek has also done a lot of philanthropic work in LA and across the country. So much so -- he was recently honored with the Style Ambassadorship Award by the city of Los Angeles.
He credits a lot of his hustle and career ambition to a difficult childhood. He suffered from homelessness and depression as a teenager, and as an adult has worked hard for all the things he has achieved. Norman Aladjem is a successful Hollywood talent manager, producer and most recently -- author.
His new book, "From Me to You: Stories about Life, Love, Family, Faith, and How to Negotiate a Bigger Allowance, is made up of letters that he wrote to his daughter, Mackenzie.
She was born a month after Norman's 45th birthday. Being an older parent, Norman wanted to make sure Mackenzie and his two older step-daughters knew how he felt about various topics in life as they grow older and embark on their own paths in life.
Over the course of a year, Norman sat down and wrote a letter a week to his "sweet daughter," whom he lovingly refers to throughout the book.
He shares about the "relief, exultation, and unbridled love" they felt on the day Mackenzie was born, September 11, 2001, just before the terror attacks that would change the country forever:
"...About an hour later, the planes hit the towers and the world turned upside down. But even in the context of that tragedy, you reminded us on that day, as you do every day, that no matter how dark things get there is always light. You also reminded us that sometimes you have to fight for that light, and pray for it, and push for it as if your very life depended on it."
The lessons include everything from the birds and the bees, to the meaning of life, religion, marriage, failure and success in the entertainment industry, a story regarding the time he almost died in Morocco and a lot more.
The idea of writing these stories, love and wisdom to your children in the form of letters is a beautiful gift -- one that probably becomes even more appreciated with age.
While the letters were specifically written for Mackenzie and his family, the book is funny, heartwarming and speaks to everyone.

If you’re a boxing fan, you’ve most likely stumbled upon one of Elie Seckbach’s videos from his YouTube channel, ESNews.
His channel has nearly 331,000 subscribers, 71,000 videos and more than 617 million views to date.
The Los Angeles Times recently did a feature on Elie, describing him as “quirky,” “always smiling” and that he could be “the most influential reporter in boxing today.”
He’s constantly working, shooting video, editing and uploading to his YouTube channel, in addition to other social media platforms. He even posted a video during this podcast.
Interestingly, the Israeli-born reporter did not always follow boxing. He covered sports, mostly NBA, but his focus shifted after he posted a video with a guy he’d never heard of – named Manny Pacquiao.
The video received 300,000 views overnight.
For comparison, he considered 2,000 views at the time to be "viral." Interviews with LeBron James or Kobe Bryant received 10,000 to 15,000 views.

Dana Pollack is the CEO and founder of Dana's Bakery, known for taking the traditional French macaron and putting that unique American twist on them with flavors like birthday cake, s'mores, fruity cereal, red velvet and more.
But Dana wasn't always sending these delicious love bombs to people in the mail.
At 30, she left her career as a photo editor at Muscle & Fitness magazine and enrolled at the Institute of Culinary Education to study fine baking and the pastry arts.
She says she admired the French macaron's beauty and distinct texture, but noticed the lack of variety in the traditional French macaron flavors. She soon started perfecting her own Dana-inspired macaron recipes.
Officially established in 2012, Dana's Bakery began in a small kitchen in New Jersey. Using her photography skills, she shot pictures of her delicious treats like she would have in her previous magazine job. Catching the #FoodPorn wave early, she was able to build a following on Instagram with beauty shots of her macarons.
Six years later, Dana's Bakery has expanded beyond macarons to include cookies and the Mookie (a macaron inside of a cookie) and recently made the Inc. 5000 list for Fastest Growing Private Companies in America in 2018.
The company ships nationwide and has two retail locations in New York.
In addition to baking and being the creative force behind Dana's Bakery, Dana is a mother to daughter Leni, loves her daily Starbucks drink and takes a lot of pride in being a woman in business.

Tiffany Young was raised in Southern California, and at the age of 15 she was discovered by SM Entertainment—one of Korea's biggest entertainment agencies.
She moved to Seoul on her own and trained to become a pop star, eventually making her debut in the popular K-pop group Girls' Generation.
With her bandmates, Tiffany enjoyed a decade of number one singles, millions of album sales and more than a billion YouTube views in what some would call the most influential K-pop girl group around.

Imagine hiring someone to go on a walk with you around your neighborhood, and at the same time, you could study a new language, learn about the history of an area or just have an accountability partner to exercise with.
That's the idea behind The People Walker, an on-demand service that lets you book people to go on walks with around Los Angeles and form new human connections.
When Chuck McCarthy first moved to LA, he began working in production and eventually acting. He also started walking more. He says a series of events led him to the idea to start a business where he would walk people and talk to them.
His idea received a lot of media coverage, including an appearance on “The Doctors.”
Chuck met Ary Sarbaz at a wedding. They bonded over the “horribly amazing” reality show “Mystery Diners,” and they also discussed the concept of an on-demand service to walk with strangers that could leave a truly positive impact.
Ary, an attorney who ran a law firm for several years, was sold.
Together they have grown the business to serve several different neighborhoods of Los Angeles, and the number of "Walkers" for hire continues to grow.
The idea is simple but it can have many benefits beyond just getting your steps in, including safety reasons, meeting new people and having someone who can just be there to lend an ear.

Many people first heard the soulful voice of Conrad Sewell in the massive song "Firestone" with Kygo. Since being released in late 2014, it's racked up billions of streams.
The singer-songwriter, originally from Australia, also found success with his debut EP "All I Know," his Coca-Cola collaboration with the late Avicii and touring with Ed Sheeran and Maroon 5, among other things.
Life on the road took a toll on his life, however. He says he was drinking a lot and it affected a previous relationship. This period inspired more honest songwriting (and beautiful vocals), which you can hear in "Come Clean" and "Healing Hands" off his latest release Ghosts & Heartaches.

Hal Eisner is currently in his 36th year on television here in Los Angeles. He's a reporter at FOX 11 and also hosts a show called "FOX 11 News In Depth." The longtime broadcast journalist just won an Emmy Award for his news special taking a look at the 1992 Los Angeles Riots.
Hal got his start in Texas on the radio (by sending in a postcard, believe it or not).
Eventually making the transition to television news, he has since covered all kinds of local and national news stories, including the O.J. Simpson trial and the deadly 1994 Northridge earthquake.
Hal has also been very active in TV industry organizations throughout his career and creator of an annual weekend camp for aspiring news reporters and anchors across the country.
He joined me on Olympic & Bundy to talk about background in radio, covering the LA riots, winning an Emmy, mentoring young people and the importance of future journalists, his cowboy days in Texas and more!

David Mikkelson started one of the first online fact checking sites known as Snopes.com.
In a time before social media and the convenience of search engines, David was discussing urban legends in the Usenet newsgroup alt.folklore.urban.
In 1994, he started Snopes. Originally, the website focused on his interest in researching urban legends.
More than two decades later, in the era of fake news and misinformation purposely being shared online, Snopes is still fact-checking but the website has evolved in the topics it covers.

Ashley Bell's documentary "Love & Bananas: An Elephant Story" will take you on an emotional journey that ends with a love of elephants.
Bell is an actress you may know from films like “The Last Exorcism” and “Psychopaths,” but over the past five years, she’s worked on a passion project that she both directed and produced.
In the film, she joins Thai conservationist Sangdeaun Lek Chailert on a mission to rescue a 70-year-old, partially blind elephant named Noi Na from a trekking camp and bring her 500 miles to freedom.
"Love & Bananas" also exposes the dangerous and unfortunate situation the Asian elephants are in, including the damage caused by tourists riding elephants at trekking camps, their loss of habitat and the illegal hunting and trade.
It's a very hopeful film, however, and does an amazing job at humanizing these giant animals by sharing their intelligence, their empathy and their individual personalities.

Doug Minnick is the co-founder of the Garagiste Festivals (www.californiagaragistes.com), which bring together small, artisan winemakers and wine lovers in various cities across California.
He loves wine, but not in that snobby, intimidating kind of way that the world of wine sometimes holds.
"Garagiste" is a French term originally used in the Bordeaux region to criticize small-production winemakers, sometimes producing out of their garage.
Think rule-breakers and renegades -- driven by their love of wine.
The Garagiste Festivals connect people with ultra-premium and hard-to-find wines. It also raises scholarship funds for future winemakers at Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo.
Doug is a garagiste himself, sourcing top-quality grapes for his Hoi Polloi Winery (www.hoipolloiwinery.com) that he owns with two other wine lovers. A plural noun in the Greek language, "hoi polloi" translates to "the masses, the common people, riff-raff."
The label has a tasting room called "Double Trouble" in Old Town Newhall, just north of Los Angeles.

Todd Wertman and Nick Smith are both car buffs and are professional appraisers on the Discovery Channel show "Sticker Shock."
The 13-episode show features some classic cars and asks the question: "What's my car worth?"
It's a show for everyone (even those who are non-car buffs), telling the owner's story behind the vehicle. More often the not, the owner of each car has spent years and thousands of dollars restoring the vehicle -- and it holds a lot of sentimental value for each person.
Todd and Nick are among four appraisers who investigate the vehicle's history and condition to come up with a price tag.
In the show you'll see a 1966 Batmobile replica with working rocket launchers, a 1931 Chevrolet Roadster that was once featured with the Beach Boys during a performance on the "Ed Sullivan Show," and even a street-legal WWII military tank that the owner inherited from his dad.

Drew Manning was working as a personal trainer when he purposely gained and lost 75 pounds in order to gain a better perspective on the struggles of his clients.
He has since become a New York Times bestselling author and hosted the A&E show "Fit To Fat To Fit," which follows other personal trainers from across the country as the undergo a similar experiment in which they intentionally gain weight -- and then lose it alongside their clients.
Drew has also become very knowledgeable about the ketogenic diet, appearing on "The Dr. Oz Show" to explain its benefits. He now runs a 60-day Keto Jumpstart Program and is working on a keto book.
On his podcast, The Fit2Fat2Fit Experience, Drew interviews various people talking about everything from physical health to mental health. Francesco Mastalia is a photographer who takes portraits of people using an old and beautiful photographic technique from the 1850s, called the wet plate collodion process.
The photographs are taken on glass plates, and Mastalia uses a large format wooden camera and antique brass lens. The glass plates are hand coated to produce images that are each individually unique -- yet possess an ethereal-like quality in all.
For his new book "Yoga: The Secret of Life," Mastalia met and photographed more than 100 of the world's most renowned yogis, asking how they came to yoga and what it means to them.
In doing so, the project seems to have left a profound effect on his own life.

Tony McEwing was surprised this week by Los Angeles City Council with June 13th being proclaimed "Tony McEwing Day."
He recently celebrated his 25th anniversary on Los Angeles television at FOX 11, and there were a lot of surprises for him.
Tony says he doesn't really like all of the attention on himself, but is very grateful and appreciative for all of the love.

Jen and Samir Sarkar are the loving parents to 6-year-old Carter and 8-year-old Sophia. Their son, Carter, was diagnosed with a fatal disease called Sanfillipo syndrome, which is sometimes referred to as childhood Alzheimer's.
It's a progressive brain disorder in young children -- caused by a missing enzyme. Carter’s parents say as the disease progresses, he will eventually lose the ability to talk, swallow and walk. He will develop seizures, suffer severe dementia and eventually pass away.
His parents, like all parents would do, are working tirelessly to give Carter his rightful chance at life. They started a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising $1 million to fund a clinical trial that could potentially save Carter’s life.

If you're drawn to true crime shows and podcasts, you may have heard the voice of Tracy Pattin.
She is the host and co-producer of the popular Hollywood & Crime podcast by Wondery, which delves into the unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short (aka The Black Dahlia) in 1947, as well as the murder of more than a dozen other women who died in similar circumstances around the same time.
Most recently, Tracy's new six-part series called "The Wonderland Murders" skyrocketed to No. 1 on Apple Podcasts upon being released.
She and writer/director Larry Brand use a docudrama style of storytelling to look at the 1981 case in which four people were brutally murdered at 8763 Wonderland Avenue — located in the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles. The case involves drugs, criminals and even the world's most famous porn star "on a downward and deadly spiral."

Lesli Linka Glatter is one of the most prolific television directors around. She's received seven Emmy nominations, won two Directors Guild Awards and even received an Oscar nomination.

Valorie Kondos Field, or "Miss Val" as she's affectionately known, is the longtime head coach of the UCLA Women's Gymnastics Team with seven NCAA National Championships.
Valorie has been named the PAC-12 Gymnastics Coach of the Century and is a member of the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame.
Most importantly, she has a unique coaching style with a focus on joy, gratitude and choices. She says a breast cancer diagnosis in 2014 led her to an epiphany: "Be anxious for nothing and grateful for all things."

Heidi Moneymaker is one of Hollywood's go-to stuntwomen and has been doubling for actress Scarlett Johansson for years.
She's also doubled for Julianne Moore ("The Hunger Games"), Michelle Rodriguez ("Fast and the Furious"), Drew Barrymore ("Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle") and many more.
Before entering the stunt double world, she was a champion gymnast for UCLA. Heidi is the only woman gymnast in UCLA history to win NCAA gymnastics titles all four years in school, and she is UCLA’s first-ever uneven bars NCAA champion.
In other words, she's a force to be reckoned with.

Elex Michaelson has always been a go-getter.
Growing up in Agoura Hills, he was the student body president of his high school, captain of the basketball team and later the president of his fraternity at USC -- among many other things.
In college, Elex interned at FOX 11 but not without first showing up unannounced and waiting to meet with the executive producer in person to secure the gig. He's since returned to FOX 11 as a Los Angeles news anchor and political reporter in what can only be described as a full circle moment.
He’s always been interested in political journalism from the time he was a little kid. A self-described "political junkie," he's done one-on-one interviews with Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and many more.
"I’m interested in the policy. The idea that it is still one of the great ways to help people and to affect people’s lives… I’m also interested in the politics and sort of the gamesmanship of it, and the characters. You have some of the most interesting, smart, driven, ambitious, sometimes selfish, sometimes egotistical, sometimes vain, sometimes brilliant people competing against each other and strategizing."
To him, politics can be similar to sports -- but with a "real world consequence."

Actor, director, producer, musician and more -- Tim Robbins is best known for his roles in "Shawshank Redemption," "The Player," "Mystic River," and the recent HBO series "Here and Now."
But 37 years ago, he started a theater company in Los Angeles called The Actor's Gang, and throughout the success of his career, he's continued to act, write and direct plays there.

Araksya Karapetyan is an anchor on FOX 11 in Los Angeles beginning at 4:30 a.m. and is a mother, wife and proud Armenian -- among many other things.
Her family left everything behind in Armenia and immigrated to the United States when she was 7-years-old. A devastating earthquake, a brewing conflict with Azerbaijan and the demise of the Soviet Union all contributed to her family's decision to leave their homeland.
They settled in the South Bay of Los Angeles, and only able to speak Armenian and Russian at the time, she began learning English and adjusting to life in America.
She eventually went to college at Syracuse University and obtained a degree in International Relations and Broadcast Journalism. But it wasn't until she went back to visit Armenia that she found her true passion for journalism. Instead of doing the typical "touristy" things, she brought her camcorder and started interviewing people on the street to hear their stories.
Upon returning to America, she was hooked on storytelling. She started interning at KABC in Los Angeles and KFI 640 AM radio in Burbank before landing her first reporting job at KIDK in Idaho Falls. She then moved to KOIN in Portland before returning home to Los Angeles to work at FOX 11.
When reflecting back on her family's story, she said: "Even when I'm on TV, there are moments when I look around the studio and I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, how did I end up here?'"

Television as we know it today is multi-platform, but obviously it wasn't always that way.
The early days of TV were very experimental, groundbreaking and sometimes kind of dangerous. Much of television's history was made here in Los Angeles -- as well as some big careers.
Joel Tator, who has produced and directed thousands of broadcasts, wrote a book about the history of LA television. Mitch Waldow is the archive manager at KTTV/KCOP and also is a veteran of the Los Angeles broadcast market.
Both Joel and Mitch joined me on Olympic & Bundy to share their memories and knowledge about the history of television in LA -- including the first television helicopter, the first big breaking news stories covered on television, the first live coverage of an atomic bomb, the careers of people like Betty White, Lawrence Welk, and more.
One of the many takeaways that I had from this conversation is that learning the history about television, including the struggles and difficulties to develop it, really makes you appreciate technology in its current form.

Shelby Rideout is the creator and founder of Bright Signs Learning, a program that introduces young kids to sign language and basic reading concepts in a fun and interactive way.
She and her husband have four children and are currently in the process of adopting a fifth child.
When they first got married, however, they started trying right away to have children but were unable to get pregnant. They tried several rounds of IVF and had multiple miscarriages during the experience.
Shelby spoke very openly about her struggle with infertility and what it was like interacting with other expecting parents during that time in her life.
Simultaneously, they went through the adoption process. Shelby eventually went to Ethiopia to meet her baby daughter Tensae, which she describes as a "life-defining moment" when she finally became a mother.
And as the universe would have it, she also found out around the same time that she was pregnant with her son Jack.
She joined me on Olympic & Bundy to talk about her background as a tutor and actress, the adoption process and simultaneous struggle with infertility, eventually becoming a mother to multiple, beautiful children and developing an idea into a successful business.

Actress Danielle Savre plays a firefighter in the new "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff called "Station 19."
She didn't have to look far to draw inspiration for the role as Maya Bishop. Her real-life sister Stephanie is a firefighter in Los Angeles and is someone she really looks up to.
To quote Danielle, "she's a badass."
When filming for the show -- Danielle says she prefers to wear the full, heavy firefighter gear (to fully commit) and gets little nuggets of information for the role from her sister and the firefighters advising on set.
"I love racking their brains, and even stories that they didn't think would be important, for me as an actor, I'm like, 'No tell me these things!'"
Danielle joined me on Olympic & Bundy to talk about the new “Station 19” series premiering March 22, her upcoming movie "Deep Blue Sea 2" that was shot in South Africa, growing up in Simi Valley, her audition process and more.

Ben Indeglia is a senior at New Roads School in Santa Monica and the captain of the school's robotics team. Three years ago, he and math teacher Danny Figueroa combined forces to bring robotics to young students in Compton, called the Compton Robotics Club.
The program started with about 20 kids in eight different schools and has grown to more than 200 students at 24 different schools.
Essentially, they've helped start a robot revolution in Compton public schools.

Dr. Nikki Goldstein is a sexologist, podcaster and author. She’s on a mission to educate others about all things love, sex, relationships, dating -- as well as some of the taboo subjects that can come along with those topics.
She joined me on Olympic & Bundy to talk about everything from what is means to be “Single but Dating” in 2018, to her recent visit to an Orange County company making sex robots with artificial intelligence, to the porn industry and more.

Grae Drake is a senior editor at Rotten Tomatoes. She often comes on Good Day LA to review upcoming films in theaters, but has done many other jobs beyond watching and critiquing movies.
She's worked as a producer for reality TV shows like "Women on Death Row" and "Women Who Kill," as well as "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," jobs which she says made her cry on the regular.
We talked about what it's like to be a movie reviewer. How much does she read about a film beforehand, and what is she looking for in the film?
We also discussed some of films up for Academy Awards this year, including "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri," "I, Tonya," "Darkest Hour," "Dunkirk," as well as her experiences interviewing people like Gwyneth Paltrow, Ryan Gosling and her special friendship with the great Samuel L. Jackson!

Street artist Morley is responsible for art you've likely seen while walking down the sidewalk or driving through the various neighborhoods of Los Angeles.
He's known for creating bold, typographic posters with a cartoon-like image of himself that he wheat pastes on utility boxes, boarded up buildings and other places that won't leave lasting damage.
I first learned about Morley when a friend invited me to one of his pop-up art shows. I was immediately struck by his ability to so eloquently put into words exactly what I was feeling, and as it turns out, that's kind of his goal.
"I wanted to create art that was broad yet somehow specific," he said. "I wanted a million people to walk by something that I had done and a million of them to say, 'I feel like he made that just for me.'"
Morley first moved to Los Angeles as a screenwriter. Combining his talent for writing and art, he's found a way to combine the two passions into something that inspires other people moving through their day to day lives.

When you get engaged and begin to plan a wedding, you find yourself having to make decisions about this or that: Are you going to wear a white dress? Will you have a best man? Will you do the bouquet and garter toss?
I'm getting married, and the planning process has led me to question why some common wedding traditions even exist in the first place. As it turns out, some of them have quite bizarre origins.
Kristin Banta is a Los Angeles event and wedding planner. Her company has put on some big parties, including the premiere party for "Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri" in Hollywood and plenty of beautiful, unique weddings.

Growing up in Mississippi, Lance Bass wanted go to school for space engineering and become an astronaut before he rose to fame in NSYNC.
A quick Google search will show you that the former boy band member has done many, many things beyond music -- including acting, TV hosting, cooking, documentaries and more.
In fact, Lance moved to Russia in 2002 after NSYNC disbanded and went through several months of rigorous training to win a seat on a Russian Soyuz space capsule. He was certified by both NASA and the Russian Space Program.
Funding ultimately fell through and he didn't get to go to the International Space Station, but his dreams of traveling to space remain.
Lance joined me on Olympic & Bundy to chat about topics like marriage and starting a family, his pop star days, and of course, space travel!

The trendy fermented beverage used to just be found in health food stores and in the kitchens of home brewers, but now it's everywhere.
There are a lot of health claims online about kombucha, but is it just hype?

I first met Karena Dawn and Katrina Scott of Tone It Up during an appearance on Good Day LA and have since continued to workout with them (well, online anyway).
Together, they've created a gigantic fitness brand and community for women that offers a place to workout, get nutrition guidance, fashion and beauty tips, and most uniquely -- a place to find friendship.
Fittingly, Tone It Up started with friendship when one approached the other at the gym -- both open to friendship and new opportunities. Armed with a tripod and camera, they began filming fitness videos in 2009 and started building an online audience.
Their own authentic selves and friendship certainly inspired others. A community started growing where women could not only come to "tone it up," but feel confident and supported by other like-minded women.
Fast forward to 2018, and the Tone It Up business has grown immensely. They've partnered with big brands, you can get their products at Target, they have their own app, they go on tour and reach millions of people across all of their online platforms.

The annual CES, also known as the biggest consumer technology show on the planet, wrapped up this week in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The event showcases the latest innovations from big corporations and tiny startups, including a technology to "see through" cars in front of you on the road, a robot dog, an Alexa-enabled smart bathroom and more!
Tech reviewer and FOX 11 editor Tshaka Armstrong joined me to talk about his experience at CES 2018 and some of the cool new products and technologies on the floor.
Some of these inventions could soon be useful to consumers, while others may seem kind of impractical. It might be too soon to tell either way.

It's 2018, and California now has dispensaries selling legal pot.
There are some dispensaries that opened January 1, some that may not open for a few weeks or months -- and some local governments that have opted not to open any for the foreseeable future (note: this episode was recorded 1/3/18 ).
Two people who have been working to educate others about cannabis and to change the public perception about people who use it joined me on Olympic and Bundy to talk about all things marijuana in California.
Kandice Hawes is the founder and executive director of Orange County NORML, part of a nationwide organization that works to reform marijuana laws. Stefan Borst-Censullo is an attorney who has worked in cannabis legislation, lobbying and more.
Whether you are a regular cannabis user and want to know what has changed (i.e. How much can you buy now? How do these changes affect medical marijuana patients?), or perhaps you've never smoked or consumed a drop of THC in your life, everyone can get something out of this episode.

The difference between "old school bullying" and our current culture of connectedness is that it can be a 24/7 problem. You can no longer go home to get away from people at school -- it follows you home.
Approximately 43 percent of kids say they have been victim to cyberbullying, according to stopbullying.gov, and 58 percent of them have not told their parents.
Jamie Weddle is a school counselor at Beverly Vista School and El Rodeo School, working with kids age K-8. Mandy Amano works with the Matthew Silverman Memorial Foundation (MSMF), which is dedicated to stopping student suicide through school-based mental health programs.
MSMF was started by Ron Silverman after losing his child, Matt, to suicide at age 18 -- and wants to ensure that no other child or family suffers through this pain.
Jamie and Mandy joined me on Olympic & Bundy for a conversation about many topics related to student bullying, mental health and suicide prevention.

Austin and Howard Raishbrook are brothers (twins, actually) who star in the new Netflix documentary series "Shot in the Dark."
Along with their younger brother Marc, they are freelance news videographers -- or what we call "stringers" in the news business. They work at night listening to police scanners and drive all over the greater Los Angeles area to film crime scenes, fires and accidents -- which they in turn sell to news outlets to air.
If you enjoyed the 2014 film "Nightcrawler" with a very intense Jake Gyllenhaal character, you should definitely put this real-life version on your list to binge-watch (fun fact: they did ride-alongs and consulted for the film).
The Netflix series follows their company, RMG News, along with two other rival companies, OnSceneTV and Loudlabs, as they chase news stories and face fierce competition to get the better shot, first.
It's a dangerous job, and for the average viewer of the show, probably something that you will walk away from with more questions.
Lucky for me, Howard and Austin Raishbrook joined me on Olympic & Bundy to talk about the filming of the show, the moral implications of a job like that and even what they thought about the movie "Nightcrawler."

Amanda Salas is as hardworking and smart as she is punny! In fact, when she's not reporting from the red carpet at a movie premiere for FOX 11, she's a "punsultant." Amanda joined me on Olympic & Bundy to talk about her background -- which involves a mix of entertainment, cars and puns. Shaun Leverett grew up in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts. He learned Muay Thai from his older brother and says he used it as a way to channel some of his aggression as a child (and also as an opportunity to get to hang out with his older brother). Anna Baker suffered from chronic fatigue for years.
It wasn't until the Sydney, Australia, native met an alternative doctor who cleaned up her diet that she began feeling better once and for all.
Baker is now living in Los Angeles helping others feel better and clean up their diet as well. She's the founder and principal nutritionist for Nutrition Journey, a company that offers customized meal plans, kitchen makeovers, healthy shopping tips and more.
She joined me to talk about about her passion for nutrition and debunk some common diet myths.

Fear of sharks? There's a band for that.
Sharkbanz is something you can wear around your wrist or ankle in the water that uses a magnetic technology to help deter sharks.
We invited Davis Mersereau, VP of business development at SharkBanz, to provide some insight on the product -- along with Tower 26 coach Gerry Rodrigues to share his experience as a longtime swimmer and coach.
If you’re a surfer or swimming in open water a lot, this episode talks about the technology in layman's terms, some of the research behind the product and the company’s active partnership with Shark Defense Technologies to improve its effectiveness.
While the company does not promise to entirely protect you from all shark attacks, Mersereau says it's a way to "reduce the risk" and give someone peace of mind.
