Anita Deyneka is a longtime missionary, author, and advocate for vulnerable children, whose life and ministry have spanned the Soviet era, the collapse of communism, and the current crisis in Ukraine. Raised in Washington State and called to Christ at age 11, Anita later married missionary Peter Deyneka Jr., joining the influential Slavic Gospel Association founded by his father. Together they supported Christian radio broadcasts, distributed Bibles, and worked closely with persecuted believers across Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union—efforts that sometimes resulted in denied visas due to their advocacy writings.
After communism fell, Anita played a major role in expanding ministry opportunities, including leadership of Peter Deyneka Russian Ministries (now Mission Eurasia) and development of programs for emerging Christian leaders. Her deepest long-term focus, however, has been orphan care. Inspired by Ukrainian believers after the Soviet collapse, she helped encourage national movements such as Ukraine Without Orphans, Russia Without Orphans, and eventually the global coalition World Without Orphans, now active in over 90 countries.
Today, Anita’s central concern is the plight of Ukrainian children affected by Russia’s 2022 invasion, including the forcible abduction of more than 20,000 children into Russia and Russian-controlled territories, where they are separated from families, indoctrinated, or even forced into military service. She urges prayer, awareness, and support for bipartisan U.S. legislation aimed at ensuring the safe return of these children and upholding family unity.
This conversation reflects Anita’s lifelong commitment to bringing the hope of Christ to vulnerable communities and championing the well-being and protection of children in crisis.

The interview with Pastor David Nelms, founder of The Timothy Initiative (TTI), centers on his mission to plant churches among unreached people groups worldwide. Nelms explains that TTI focuses on areas with few or no churches—primarily Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and animist regions—and has helped establish churches among more than 1,700 ethnic groups. He describes how the ministry began after witnessing an Asian village with no Christian presence, leading his church to start 7,000 house fellowships by removing traditional barriers such as salaries, sanctuaries, and seminaries. TTI’s model emphasizes discipleship multiplication based on 2 Timothy 2:2—training believers (“Pauls”) to mentor others (“Timothys” and “Tituses”) who then start new fellowships. Now operating in over 45 countries and training more than 200,000 Timothys, TTI also uses mapping technology to identify unreached villages and partners globally through a “Coalition of the Willing.” Nelms shares dramatic transformation stories, such as men delivered from bondage through the gospel, and concludes by urging believers to pray, give, and make disciples both locally and globally.

Retired Air Force Chaplain Thomas Westall, president and CEO of Operation Military Blessings (OMB), highlights his ministry’s mission to assist active-duty military families facing financial crises. Founded 30 years ago out of a small Bible study, OMB provides immediate aid—such as food cards, baby supplies, or emergency grants—to families in need when government programs are delayed or insufficient. Westall notes that many lower-ranked service members live below the poverty line, with food insecurity affecting a significant portion of military families. OMB operates at 25 U.S. bases and overseas, offering programs like “Operation Babies, Bottles, and Diapers,” and aid for disabled children and disaster victims. They’ve also distributed thousands of MacArthur Study Bibles to military personnel. Westall’s motivation stems from his experience as a chaplain and his belief in meeting both material and spiritual needs. Now nearly 80, he continues serving passionately, emphasizing that God’s call to ministry never retires.

Dr. Neely shares his remarkable journey of faith and his lifelong calling to preach and teach the Word of God. Introduced to prayer by his mother as a child, Neely came to personal faith in Christ at age 19 while serving in the U.S. Army through the witness of a humble dishwasher who led him to salvation. Just two weeks later, he began preaching—a calling that has shaped more than fifty years of ministry as a pastor, missionary in West Africa, and teacher of biblical exposition. In conversation with Wayne Shepherd, Neely describes preaching as the sacred task of a “herald” who faithfully proclaims God’s message without compromise, combining instruction, engagement, and transformation. Grounded in prayer and Scripture, his approach to preaching emphasizes faithfulness to the text, dependence on the Holy Spirit, and deep concern for the listener’s heart. His passion for training the next generation of preachers reflects his conviction that true preaching begins with God’s dealings in the life of the preacher and extends through him to the world.

Years ago an unpublished Wiersbe manuscript tucked in a dusty manila folder was unearthed by the Jacobsen family. Wiersbe grandson Dan Jacobsen, a young pastor himself, spent two years preserving his grandfather's original writing and completed the work titled, Becoming New, A 100 Day Journey of Transformation Through God's Word. It's a powerful continuation of Warren Wiersbe's legacy.

With the national election coming up in early November, a special prayer meeting is being planned in Washington D.C. on October 24th. It's called the National Prayer Altar and it will be held at the Museum of the Bible. Believers of all ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, and Christian denominations are invited to participate in-person or online from 6:00-8:45 PM ET.

He serves a church in one of Chicago's most underserved neighborhoods. Pastor Corey Brooks invited me to see and hear the difference the Gospel is making through Project H.O.O.D. (Helping Others Obtain Destiny). During the visit we sat down in the yet-to-be completed Community Center and talked about the vision to spiritually transform lives and uplift communities in the heart of Chicago.
Pastor Brooks, a visionary leader committed to eradicating violence and transforming lives in Chicago's South Side, is the Founder and Senior Pastor of New Beginnings Church of Chicago and the CEO of Project H.O.O.D. This ministry started through the vision of Pastor Brooks who believed in the power of education, mentorship, and community development to break the cycle of poverty and create a brighter future.
He is known as the "Rooftop" pastor because of 100's of nights he has camped on the roof of the church to bring attention to the need and raise the necessary funds to fuel the vision. His is a story of not only vision, but persistent prayer and hard work.

A Christian Study Center is a community of students and scholars animated by the ancient ideal of integrating faith, learning, and living. Such centers have emerged at many leading universities in the U.S. and Canada in recent decades. The Michigan Christian Study Center, launched in Fall 2022, joins this growing movement.
Also in the conversation, Dr. Ostrander will describe his own experience and calling to Christian scholarship. Experienced in higher Christian Education, he will apply the lessons he has learned to help both students and parents of prospective students sort out the important factors in following God's leading through education.

This week's FIRST PERSON takes you back in time to tell the story of Dr. Criswell's life and ministry as told by his close friend, Dr. O. S. Hawkins, himself one of Dr. Criswell's successors.
W.A. Criswell has been described as unquestionably the most prominent national evangelical leaders of his day. In our conversation, Dr. Hawkins tells the story of his mentor's life, but also addresses the three life regrets expressed personally by Dr. Criswell.
