My name is Kelly Aiello, and I’m a registered holistic nutritionist (RHN) and Brain Health Coach. I created the Nutritional Nerd podcast as a place to connect with people who are looking to live a happier, healthier life. I want to give you the tools you need to unlock your full potential and to live the kind of life you have always imagined. When it comes to nutrition, there is a lot of conflicting information. It seems like every week there's a new study and a new fad diet that seem to contradict the news from last week. The truth is everyone is different and biochemically unique. As such, your body has different needs. It also means there is not a single one-size-fits-all diet for everyone. Together we'll cut through all the hype and learn what your eating habits should look like to get you whole food optimized.
Discover the hidden dangers of perchlorate in your food. This neurotoxic chemical, commonly found in rocket fuel, has infiltrated our food and water supplies, posing a serious threat to thyroid health and brain development. Learn how to protect yourself and your family from perchlorate contamination through smart dietary choices, water filtration, and staying informed.

Do you experience brain fog or neurofatigue? Do your symptomsever make you feel isolated or frustrated because others simply don’t understand? Perhaps you don’t understand what is happening yourself.
In this podcast, we dive into the topic of neurofatigue, including what it is, what it feels like, the causes of neurofatigue, and most importantly, what you can do about it!
Neurofatigue is often called brain fog or mental fatigue. Most cases of neurofatigue result from a TBI - including concussions, blows to the head, or strokes. Other causes include chronic Lyme disease, chronic migraines, malnourishment, and even hormonal imbalances or PCOS.
But how do you know if neurofatigue is affecting you?
Well, neurofatigue is also called cognitive fatigue or brain fog because it includes pronounced mental fatigue after any form of mental activity. This "mental activity" can include almost anything, from writing to doing paperwork, shopping in a big box store, watching a movie, or simply engaging in conversation.
Peopleoften describe neurofatigue as the feeling of being completely exhausted or depleted. They have no brain power or energy to focus, remember information, learn anything new, or perform daily activities. Concentration and focus can become so difficult after bursts of mental activity that even simple daily tasks can be debilitating.

By using our heart’s natural rhythms and heart rate variability, we can bring all other bodily organs and systems into alignment - a state called coherence. When we are in this coherent state, we actually have the ability to change or restructure our nervous system and create positive mood states.
This allows us to:
- Better manage stress
- Improve our personal resilience
- Restore balance
- Reduce anxiety and depression
- Promote positive mood states
- Improve sleep, and
- Help us feel better overall
Listen to this week’s podcast to learn more about how the power of HeartMath can help you. Of course, feel free to contact me at Kelly@HappiHuman.com to learn more.

Do you have a loved one with dementia?
Are you overwhelmed with all the information out there (much of it conflicting), leaving you even more confused and not knowing what to do?
If so, then listen on. This week’s episode provides some practical do’s and don’ts when it comes to helping your loved one.
Yes, there are several do’s and don’ts to helping a loved one with dementia. Here are a few key things to keep in mind:
Do be patient and understanding. Dementia can be challenging to deal with, both for the person who has it and their loved ones. Remember that you should never be overly critical or judgmental, as this will only strain your relationship.
Don’t expect your loved one to remember everything. One of the hallmarks of dementia is forgetfulness, so don’t feel offended if they can’t always recall essential details about their lives. Instead, remind them gently and move on.

How to get a better brain is very appropriate, as this month is worldwide Brain Injury Awareness Month. The purpose of this month is to raise awareness, share knowledge, and educate about all things brain injury.
The information in this video is helpful for anyone who has a brain injury, knows a brain-injured person, works with one, puts themselves at risk for acquiring one, or is a caregiver to a brain injury survivor, like me. If you don’t know about my story, head over to HappiHuman.com to read all about my husband’s brain injury, how it changed both our lives in an instant, and how we managed to turn things around naturally.
But for this podcast, let’s consider why a TBI brain likes routine, how routines can support recovery, and ideas on what you can start doing today if you happen to have a TBI. So you’ll want to pay close attention - as what I share in this video is very valuable information that I wish was available to me and Joe when we needed it. Take it all in so you don’t have to struggle or feel alone like we did!
First, what exactly is a TBI? It stands for traumatic brain injury. A TBI occurs when the brain and skull collide, disrupting the brain’s normal functioning. It’s usually the result of blunt force trauma but can happen due to a variety of different reasons.
How much a TBI impacts you depends on several factors, including the severity of the injury, the biochemical changes that take place upon impact, the state of your nervous system upon injury, your nutritional status, and your body’s ability to cope, to name a few. All these factors play a role in recovery.
Speaking of recovery, let’s talk about that. One of the most important things you can do to support recovery after a TBI is to stick with a routine. It may not always be easy, but it can help speed the healing process and make life easier for you in general.
But why does a TBI brain like routine? In brief, routines can help establish a sense of stability, promote other healthy habits, and helps your brain function more efficiently. Be sure to watch the video for more information about why a TBI brain likes counties, how routines can support recovery, and some simple routines you can start today!

Today’s video is all about sugar!
Ok, so maybe not the kind of sugar you originally thought about - but sugars in your blood.
Why should you pay attention to your blood sugar levels? If you have diabetes, are worried about getting it in the future, are battling cancer, or want to stave off dementia, then blood sugar levels should be of great concern to you - and you probably already know this.
But what you may not realize is that you should also pay attention to your blood glucose levels if you are interested in optimizing your cognitive function!
How are blood sugar levels and your brain health connected? Well, let’s start with some of the most common complaints many of my clients have: poor sleep, zoning out, and irritability. These are all signs of neurofatigue.
If you have these same struggles or can’t seem to wake up, I’m sure you’ve done everything you can think of to battle your exhaustion but it doesn’t seem to go away.
If this sounds like you, I have one question for you… Have you checked your blood sugar levels lately?
There are many benefits of having and maintaining balanced blood sugar levels. The one that likely pops to mind, as previously mentioned, is to prevent diabetes. However, there are many other, less obvious benefits.
Better focus, improved mood, enhanced sleep, and increased energy are among the benefits of balanced blood sugar levels. So if you’d like to optimize your brain health and regain energy, start here! And if you’re willing, I can certainly help you with this!

Hi everyone! This is Kelly - your Nutrition Coach and Brain Health Professional on a mission to teach you how to get a better brain! Thanks for joining me.
Welcome to my channel where I share valuable information and teach about brain health.
Today, I’d like to talk about what it’s like being an online nutrition coach and how I help people reach their goals. But first, let’s start by considering why you may want to hire a nutrition coach. Why should you see a nutritionist? For the same reasons that professional athletes, actors and executives hire a nutritionist… to stay physically fit, mentally sound, and spiritually secure.
How would you like to develop a healthier relationship with food? Improve your mental health? Regain the energy and vitality you once had? Lose weight and keep it off for good? Gain a competitive advantage at work or school?
As a nutrition coach, these are among the things I get to help people with - and I couldn’t be happier doing so!
Now what you may not know about being a nutrition coach is what happens behind the scenes. When someone wants to work with me, I send them a very detailed questionnaire through my secure online platform that asks them a variety of questions. Some of them include such things as what they currently eat and do, what their goals are, and what symptoms or challenges they may be struggling with. Armed with that information, I start my detective work. My aim is to discover why the person may be experiencing the symptoms they have or what may have been holding them back from reaching their goals in the past. This way, when we start our sessions together, we can work at correcting any underlying issues.
What may surprise you is that as a nutrition coach, I don’t just focus on food. Even though food is a large part of the plan I create for someone, it’s only one piece of the puzzle.
Because we are all biochemically unique with different needs, abilities, and values, I also consider a person’s lifestyle, stress, sleep, family dynamics, work schedule, exercise regime, mindset, and history. I ask probing questions that help me determine which area (or areas) of their brain may be overactive or not getting enough blood flow. Taking all these things into consideration, I create a highly individualized plan for each person I work with. And what sets me apart is my experience in neuronutrition and brain health.
How we process information, our mindset around eating habits and our relationship with food all play a huge role in our overall health. So when I work with someone, as a nutrition coach, I work to help them improve their whole lives - not just help them clean up their diet.
If this sounds good to you, if you’d like to know what foods and lifestyle changes can benefit you, if you’d like to explore your relationship with food, if you’d like to make better eating decisions and boost your mental health, if you’re ready to change your mindset about food and eating, and if you’re ready to work hard to reach your goals, then I’m ready to hear from you!
Email me at Kelly@happihuman.com
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach all your goals!

Hi everyone! This is Kelly - your Nutrition Coach and Brain Health Professional on a mission to teach you how to get a better brain!
Today’s video is all about serotonin and how you can use it to elevate your mood.So if you’ve ever wondered what serotonin does, if your levels may be low, or if you’re tired of the winter blues, then you don’t want to miss this video!
First, what is serotonin and what happens if you don’t have enough?
Serotonin is one of the neurotransmitters involved in mental health. It is essential for our memory, stress response, and processing of emotions. It’s often referred to as the “Happy Hormone” due to its role in promoting positive feelings and prosocial behaviour. Serotonin can also help us sleep well, regulate our appetite, enable us to learn more quickly, and help us consolidate new memories.
If your levels are too low, you might:
Feel low
Have a depressed mood
Feel anxious
Become irritable or anger easily
Have sleep issues
Feel constantly fatigued
Feel impulsive
Have a decreased appetite
Experience nausea or digestive issues or
Crave sweets or simple sugars
So if you tend to get a little down over the winter months, find yourself craving sugars or carbohydrates, are tired all the time, and simply feel “blah,” then you may want to consider low serotonin levels as a potential cause.
And if this does sound like you, be sure to watch the entire video to discover some natural ways of boosting serotonin to help you beat those winter blues!

Hi everyone! This is Kelly - your Brain Health Coach and Holistic Nutritionist on a mission to teach you how to get a better brain!
Have you heard about the grain brain diet? Wondering if carbs and grains really affect the brain? Our complete guide explains it all.
If you’re worried about your cognitive function as you age, if you struggle with a spotty memory or neurofatigue, or if you’re looking for a way to improve your brain health, you've come to the right place!
It was developed by Dr. Perlmutter in response to his research surrounding brain dysfunction and the effects of carbohydrates on the brain. He discovered that just like heart dysfunction, signs and symptoms of brain dysfunction build up over time as we engage in certain behaviours and adopt certain habits.
He discovered that people who eat high-carb, low-fat diets have greater levels of inflammation in their body and brain, cholesterol protects the brain, and that the gluten of today is dangerous. He also concluded that people who have a larger waist size have a smaller memory centre!

Do you struggle with brain fog or neurofatigue and don’t know how to find relief? Would you like to be able to think more clearly and age gracefully?

Some days it may even feel like simple daily tasks are impossible and no matter how much caffeine you pump into your body, your brain simply won’t wake up!

Hi everyone! This is Kelly - your BrainHealth Coach and Holistic Nutritionist on a mission to teach you how to get a better brain!
Today’s podcast is all about the power of mental exercise and brain games that can keep seniors active and healthy.
If you’re like most people, you are probably worried about your cognitive function as you age. In fact, studies have shown that Alzheimer’s is the most-feared illness. But I’ve got good news for you! There are natural approaches you can take to reduce your risk.
We all know the importance of physical exercise on overall health, but have you ever considered that mental exercise may be just as important?
Just like physical exercises can help keep the body active and fit, mental exercises can help keep the brain keen and sharp. Brain games can be considered proactive steps to keep your brain healthy. When physical and mental exercise are combined with a good neuronutritional dietary plan or brain-healthy diet, the benefits are even greater!
Brain games also help improve your memory and daily performance; whether you’re an executive in a high-demand field, a student looking to gain a competitive edge, or a senior looking to live the rest of your years with vitality.

May was Mental Health Awareness month. If you’d like to learn more, be sure to check out our previous blogs about the difference between mental health and mental illness, as well as which neurotransmitters are related to mental health.
Do you know that we have natural brain chemicals that affect our mood?
In our last blog, we discussed three common neurotransmitters involved in mental health: serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine as well as how they work.
This week, let’s take a closer look at natural foods and supplements that can support each of these key neurotransmitters. And, as we wrap up our series on mental health this week, let’s take a closer look at what actionable steps you can take today to boost your mental health.

Mental Health vs. Mental Illness: What’s the Difference?
What is the state of your mental health?
Do you have a mental illness? Does someone you love?
We throw the words mental illness and mental health around a lot. The terms are often used interchangeably. But what do they really mean? And what’s the difference?
Keep listening to discover what constitutes a mental illness, the prevalence of mental illness today, and actionable steps you can take to improve your mental health.
Mental illness vs. Mental healthMost people have mental health concerns from time to time. If we experience loss or disappointment, we may feel down or in a funk for days, not motivated to do anything or see anyone. We may even stop eating or eat more than usual. This is normal and part of how we individually cope with the ups and downs of life. But it does not necessarily mean we have a mental illness.
So what is a mental illness, and what exactly is our mental health?
Let’s start with the latter. Our mental health basically refers to our mental well-being.
It impacts how we feel, think, and act, as well as how we relate to others, handle stress, and make choices in life. In other words, our mental health refers to our ability to navigate the world, solve problems, overcome life’s challenges, understand what’s happening around us, and remain socially connected.
Because our mental health is an integral part of our overall health, we must take good care of it.
May is Mental Health Awareness month - so now is as good a time as any to consider the state of your mental health.

Do you suffer from anxiety or depression?
If so, you’re not alone. Current rates are at an all-time high - in part due to the very stressful last year we have all been faced with.
Much like any other health issue, research into anxiety and depression all too often focuses on treatments and managing symptoms while ignoring the underlying problem.
In many cases, as with my husband following his TBI, this leads to people suffering unduly while they search fruitlessly for solutions - often feeling alone and let down by the allopathic medical system.
Much like any other health issue, research surrounding anxiety and depression often focuses on treatments and managing symptoms while ignoring the underlying problem.
In many cases, as with my husband following his TBI, this leads to people unduly suffering. At the same time, they search fruitlessly for solutions - often feeling alone and let down by the allopathic medical system.
If you can relate, especially in terms of your mental health and wellbeing, please keep reading.
Currently, rates of depression and anxiety are at all-time highs.
Why have rates skyrocketed? In recent times, the main reasons are due to issues surrounding politics, civil unrest, and an ongoing pandemic. Any one of these issues would make it difficult to cope without assistance, let alone all of them at once!
In the summer of 2020, 40% of adults in the US reported struggling with issues related to substance abuse and overall mental health. The problems causing these issues aren’t going to evaporate, so it’s up to you to find solutions that work for you.
The following list provides natural steps you can take at home to bolster yourself against the world’s many troubles naturally and manage your depression or anxiety.

Hyperbaric Oxygen: What it is and what it can do for you - My interview with Ken CassidyHave you ever heard the term HBOT or hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
If you are a diver or pilot, you’re probably aware of this therapy and may have even experienced it yourself.
But did you know that introducing oxygen into your body can help reduce inflammation and stimulate your body’s natural healing processes?
This week I had the great pleasure to sit down with colleague and friend Ken Cassidy to discuss all things oxygen! Ken and I both work at Radiant Life Naturopathic Centre in Kamloops, British Columbia, where he recently brought in a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber. It is the first of its kind in British Columbia’s interior region.
If you’re wondering what that is, what it can be used for, and how it may be able to help you, keep listening!

Neuronutrition, Brain Injury Awareness & The Launch of My New ProgramHow would your life change if you:
Maybe you’d be able to recall your grandchildren’s names and birthdates, or you’d remember the names of the actors you saw in a movie the other night.
Words and names that used to be “on the tip of your tongue” would appear.
You could recall where you last placed your keys.
You’d know why you ventured to the grocery store.
Maybe you’d gain more independence.
Maybe you’d finally be able to get ahead of your competition at work or in school.
You wouldn’t have to pull an all-nighter again, staring blanking at a page and waiting for inspiration to strike or wishing desperately for information to sink in.
You wouldn’t feel the need to pump your body full of caffeine to stay awake. You’d have more focused energy and could accomplish more in one day.
In fact, if any of these improvements could be made, I’m certain you’d have a new lease on life!

An Ode to The Good DoctorSometimes being a HappiHuman means we must go through some grief - as I am going though right now.
So if you’ll oblige me, I’d like to share my candid thoughts from a journal entry I wrote about my beloved Berkeley boy - my first dog who was much, much more than that.
My intention in sharing these private moments is not to make you sad or cry or conjure up hurtful memories of your own. Rather, my intention is to open my heart in the hopes that others will open theirs.
We must remember that love is the foundation upon which all of humanity stands. And with all the craziness and challenges humanity has faced this past year, I think we could all use this reminder - especially around the holidays.
So as we go forth, remember the cherished people and pets in your life. Rekindle lost connections. Keep your heart open. And return to being human.
Don’t procrastinate about feeling better…take action and invest in your health.

Your child’s brain requires certain nutrients at the right stages of life to help them develop properly.
In our most recent post, we introduced you to six nutrients that are crucial to the growth and development of your child’s brain. Because the brain health of our kids is so crucial, this week, we’d like to continue exploring a few more.
We all know now that nutritious food builds strong bodies. But did you know that we need brain food too?
Unsurprisingly kids who are bored, restless, inattentive and sleepy or who have a bad memory are usually those who have poor eating habits. By choosing the right brain food, kids can help ensure better academic performance and concentration.
Our brains take up only 2% of our body weight yet consume nearly 20% of our body’s energy. Eating “brain food” improves kids’ moods, elevates learning and concentration, and sharpens memory and attention.
The Standard American Diet falls short. It is devoid of nutrients, yet filled with sugary & fatty neuro-toxins that do nothing positive for our bodies or brains.
As we did with the last blog, we will include some foods in which these nutrients can be found and what benefits they provide. Then we’ll offer up some power foods that contain several of the key nutrients your child’s brain needs.
I get that it can be hard to feed a child - especially if they happen to be picky or only want to eat certain foods or textures. Hopefully, this list of power foods is the exact tool you need!

By the time your child is 3, your toddler’s brain will have tripled in size since birth. This is the biggest learning curve of his or her life and a time when his or her brain is developing trillions of connections.
At the same time, he or she is increasingly physically active and developing his social skills too. With all that going on, our children need a wide range of food to aid in rapid brain development.
“There is pretty solid evidence that children who are hungry are not able to focus, so they have a low attention span, behavioural issues, discipline issues in the school,” said Sibylle Kranz, an associate professor of kinesiology and a registered dietitian nutritionist in the Curry School. “Having children who are well-fed and not hungry makes a difference in their individual performance, and also how much they are contributing to or disrupting the classroom situation.”
Scientists have found around 45 nutrients that are key to brain health, including things like protein, zinc, iron, choline, folate, iodine, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids.
“From a neuroscientist’s perspective, food is really fundamentally important for brain health, because our brains literally run on nutrients,” says Lisa Mosconi, director of the Weill Cornell Women’s Brain Initiative.
By targeting a few food groups and experimenting with new ways of preparing them, fuelling your family’s brain growth can be easier than you might think.
Don’t procrastinate about feeling better…take action and invest in your brain.

One of the most common complaints I hear in my practice is related to brain inflammation, also known as neuroinflammation.
Most people think of inflammation in relation to arthritic joints, or maybe a sprained ankle or wrist. But did you know your brain can become inflamed, too? Inflammation is usually the body's response to injury and stress such as the redness and swelling that accompanies an injury or infection.
The problem with inflammation in the brain is that it doesn’t necessarily cause immediate hurt. Instead, symptoms such as brain fog, slow thinking, fatigue, and depression are the hallmarks. The inflammation slows down communication between neurons. This is what causes you to feel foggy, dull, and slow.
Other common causes of brain inflammation include chronic inflammation in the body, leaky gut, high blood sugar and diabetes, hormone imbalances, hypothyroidism, food intolerances (gluten is a notorious brain inflamer), stress, and brain autoimmunity — a disorder in which the immune system erroneously attacks and damages brain tissue. It is more common than people realize.
Is your brain inflamed?
To discover what common complaint this is, to learn the signs your brain may be suffering from inflammation and find out what you can do about it, keep listening!

Neuronutrition for kid’s brain health
In order to keep our kids healthy, strengthen their immune systems, and provide a solid foundation for their optimal brain health, your child needs the right stack of nutrients. In fact, healthy development in children - including a good memory, improved learning ability, stable mood, and better focus - is directly linked to adequate levels of essential nutrients.
This is what I’ve dubbed neuronutrition.
As a former public school teacher, I have seen firsthand the effects a poor diet, fast food, and sugary soda have on the academic performance and behaviour of students. Their concentration, ability to focus, capacity to learn, and memory all suffer. When they skip breakfast or consume mostly refined white flour products and processed foods, we also see a decline in grades and, for kids susceptible to the effects of sugar, behaviour problems or aggression.
As a nutritionist and brain health coach, I get it. Kids are finicky eaters when it comes to certain foods and can be challenging to feed. There’s also no guarantee that the healthy lunch or snack you’ve provided for your child will actually be eaten (or be eaten by your child!).
For these reasons and the fact that proper nutrition is required for healthy brain development in children, sometimes, we need to supplement our kid’s diet.
Adding the right quality supplements to their regime can make all the difference!
So keep listening to discover how you can help support your child’s brain health with the right supplements.

Summer is typically a time of the year to look forward to - for travel, for excitement, for new adventures. Yet this year, our focus will likely be much different than years past.
This year has been tough on everyone everywhere around the world. We have seen and experienced things unlike anything we’ve encountered in our lifetime.
What’s more is that many people stayed shut indoors for weeks or months at a time. In some cases, doing little more than feeding depression and anxiety by eating with reckless abandon. Though it’s understandable to stress-eat when stressed (and boy were we stressed!), we all know that doing so does not serve our best health.
So, this week, as the summer season approaches and uncertainty continues to loom overhead, I’d like to take the opportunity to provide a few wellness tips I thought you would enjoy. After all, any regular summer plans we may have made or hoped to make may need to be abandoned for the time being.
Listen to this week’s week’s podcast to discover a nutritionist’s guide on how to stay safe and healthy while enjoying your summer.

Foods that Affect Mood: Mood-Boosters vs. Mood-Busters
Are you in need of a mood boost? Many of us are.
In fact, many people’s moods have been hijacked lately by the daily news and events happening worldwide. Additionally, many people forced into social isolation are experiencing greater levels of depression. Humans are social beings who require physical contact and social connectedness, making isolation a killer!
So there’s no question that we could all use a mood boost.
There’s also no question that what you eat can affect how you feel.
While we know bad moods can lead to bad eating habits; it’s also true that bad eating habits can lead to bad moods.
At HappiHuman.com, we pride ourselves on being able to support everyone’s optimal health - regardless of whether you are a TBI survivor, struggle with a mental health issue, wish to improve cognitive function or simply want to optimize your weight and age gracefully.
Listen to this week’s post to discover some facts about foods that affect mood and which nutrients can help with recovery.

Neuronutrition after Traumatic Brain Injury: The Nutrients your Brain Needs
No matter how well you take care of yourself and your brain, the reality is that anyone can suffer from a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) at any time. TBIs do not discriminate against gender, age, race, or health status.
For my husband Joe, it happened in a cycling accident.
For Maggie, whom I interviewed last week, it happened at a waterslide park.
For you, it may have been on a football field or hockey rink.
But regardless of how one may have sustained a TBI, the science is showing that proper nutrition following acquisition can play a helpful role in TBI recovery.
At HappiHuman.com, we pride ourselves on being able to support everyone’s optimal brain health - regardless of whether you are a TBI survivor, struggle with a mental health issue, wish to improve cognitive function or simply want to age gracefully.
This month, in our efforts to further educate about Brain Injury Awareness, we decided to focus on specific nutrients that may be able to speed recovery or mitigate the damaging effects of a brain injury. Also included are foods that contain these key nutrients.
Listen to this week’s post to discover some facts about TBIs and which nutrients can help with recovery.

A Nutritionist’s Guide: What to eat in times of stressSometimes, stress gets the best of us.
Sometimes, stress levels are so high that we get trapped in circular thinking and can’t escape. We cannot turn off recursive thoughts.
So what do we do?
Most of us reach for McDonald's, lasagna, French fries, cookies, ice cream, or some other fatty, salty, sugary foods that we find comforting.
If this sounds like you, you’re not alone!
But have you ever stopped to think about how these foods may actually be making matters worse? Would you like some ideas of foods you’d be better off eating in times of stress?
Listen to this week’s podcast to discover how stress messes with our health and what to eat in times of stress.
