Dr. Marinkovich includes an excerpt from Aaron Owens, a dystrophic EB patient who participated in a clinical trial. Designed for clinicians, researchers, patients, caregivers, and others involved in EB care, this program highlights recent progress in the field and the collaborative work driving better treatment options for patients.

Skin reactions during pediatric cancer treatment can be painful, stigmatizing, and sometimes threaten a child’s ability to stay on therapy. In this episode of PeDRA Pearls, Dr. Christina Boull and Dr. Rebecca Levy discuss PeDRA's Skin Tumors and Reactions to Cancer Therapies (STARC) Focused Study Group and its work to prevent, recognize, and manage these toxicities. Irene Lara-Corrales, MD is an Associate Professor of Dermatology at the University of Toronto and a pediatric dermatologist at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, Canada. She knew early on that pediatric dermatology was her calling, and her dedication to advancing care for children with complex skin diseases deepened after caring for an infant with epidermolysis bullosa (EB) during her residency in Costa Rica. Most recently, Dr. Lara-Corrales has been a leading champion for hidradenitis suppurativa within PeDRA and across the broader pediatric dermatology research community. At the time of this interview in 2021, Dr. Carrie Coughlin was an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. She was also the Chair of the PeDRA Outcomes Committee, a member of the Meetings and Studies Committees, and led the Skin Tumors and Reactions to Cancer Therapies (STARC) Focused Study Group. Since then, she has become an Associate Professor of Dermatology and is serving as the Treasurer for PeDRA's Board of Directors.

Colleen Cotton, MD is a Pediatric Dermatologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC. In this third and final episode, we're diving deep into how emerging insights about the microbiome are shaping the way clinicians counsel families and care for pediatric patients. Dr. Shoch and Dr. Castelo-Soccio share how understanding the microbiome has changed their clinical practice, from their approach to bathing routines and yeast overgrowth to dietary counseling and the cautious use of probiotics and bleach baths. Together, they explore what we know and what we don't, and where the future of microbiome research in pediatric dermatology might be headed.
In this second episode, we discuss how infant microbiomes develop and what factors shape them, and how early life disruptions may increase the risk of disease. Irene Lara-Corrales, MD is an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Toronto and a pediatric dermatologist at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, Canada. She always knew she wanted to be a pediatric dermatologist, and her interest in epidermolysis bullosa (EB) grew deeper after treating a young baby with EB during her residency in Costa Rica. Most recently, she’s been championing Hidradenitis Suppurativa within PeDRA and the greater pediatric dermatology research community. As we gear up to release the first episode of our new Hidradenitis Suppurativa Podcast series, we dipping into the archives for a publication presentation from Dr. Irene Lara-Corrales about this international, multicenter, retrospective, cross-sectional study of 481 pediatric patients revealed a gap in diagnosis, and that HS patients are likely to suffer from other comorbidities. Moderated by Dr. Michele Ramien, Dr. Erin Mathes, and Dr. Yvonne Chiu debate RIME, SJS, and other blistering severe cutaneous adverse reactions. PeDRA had the privilege of attending the Symposium on Hidradenitis Suppurativa Advances (SHSA) in Phoenix, AZ in October 2023. First up is Lynn Petukhova, PhD, discussing her ground-breaking work in Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) genetics and how she harnesses the power of genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Sean and Jolie Cina have two children with ichthyosis – Portia (16) and Miles (12), and found FIRST shortly after Portia was born and diagnosed. Now, 16 years later, the family is more involved than ever with the FIRST community. Diana Zarowin is a fourth-year medical student at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Bella Plumptre, MD is in her final year of dermatology residency at the University of Massachusetts. Eczema’s range in severity means each patient experience is different from the next and no two stories are the same. Young Ella has lived with severe eczema since she was 8 months old. Now, as a 6-year-old in first grade, she’s finally able to experience some relief and feel like a “normal” kid. Ella and her mom, Amy share their story, how the National Eczema Association helped them navigate this disease, and how Ella was finally able to eat ice cream and go to the beach.

PeDRA staff had the opportunity to attend the 2022 SID Meeting. While there, PeDRA conducted a series of short interviews with attendees and presenters like John Harris, MD, PhD, and Joel Gelfand, MD, MSCE, FAAD, to capture some exciting meeting highlights.
Unanswered Questions in Pediatric HS The group addresses lingering research questions and stresses the importance of disease education in order to meet the needs of Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) patients. Consensus guidelines exist for adult HS but have yet to be written for pediatric HS. The need for early diagnosis is not only critical for disease management but is vital for the overall well-being of patients and their families.
Aggressive Options for Pediatric HS Dr. Lara-Corrales and Dr. Izzy Andrews discuss aggressive treatments for Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) and highlight the importance of a multi-disciplinary care team to help treat the psychosocial aspects and the physical pain associated with this traumatic disease. Access to care is also a key component in combating HS and it’s critical that more than just pediatric dermatologists have a better understanding of HS before treating patients.
Non-Aggressive Options for Pediatric HS Dr. Irene Lara-Corrales and Dr. Yasmine Kirkorian discuss non-aggressive treatment options available to pediatric patients with Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) and how difficult it can be to quantify just exactly what it means when providers recommend “lifestyle” changes to help treat this devastating inflammatory skin disease.

Blistering severe cutaneous adverse reaction in children: proposal for pediatric-focused clinical criteria (I will link this). Dr. Michele Ramien summarizes a collaborative study on blistering severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCAR) in children. It’s very important to diagnose these reactions early and accurately as they can be life-threatening. The study created categories that are more appropriate for diagnosing pediatric patients than what existed in the past. Watch to learn more about the impact on patients and next steps.
