In this episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, Dave uses the experience of a triathlon “brick workout” to explore what it feels like to enter a new season of life and faith. Just as the first mile after a hard bike ride can feel awkward, painful, and completely out of rhythm, transitions often make us question whether we're on the right path. Through the physical realities of adaptation, personal experience, and Scripture, Dave examines what happens when we leave behind old habits, identities, coping mechanisms, and sources of strength that no longer belong in the season God is leading us into. Ultimately, the episode points us to Christ as the foundation for every transition, reminding us that we don't have to understand the entire race to take the next faithful step—and that what feels like failure or discomfort may simply be the beginning of adaptation, growth, and deeper dependence on God.

Have you ever felt exhausted before your day even started? In this episode, Dave explores the quiet, spiritual battle happening every time we reach for our phones — and why distraction, not doubt, may be the enemy's favorite weapon against our faith. Drawing on lessons from personnel recovery and the ancient wisdom of the Desert Fathers, Dave unpacks why guarding your attention isn't about productivity — it's about worship. You'll learn a simple "First Filter" question to run every piece of content through before it takes up space in your mind, and three practical habits to help you reclaim focus, hear God's whisper again, and stop letting the noise disciple you instead of Scripture.

What does it actually take to stand unshaken when life hits hard? In this episode of Resilient Fire, Dave looks past surface-level strength to unpack a powerful tactical and spiritual truth: you don’t become resilient in the moment of crisis; you reveal the preparation you’ve already built.

Drawing from the stark reality of Illinois' record-breaking 196 tornadoes in 2026, the vital SERE concept of the "fire tree," and the surprising survival secret of the massive giant sequoia, Dave challenges the dangerous modern myth of isolated strength. He dives into the historic, underground faith network of Corrie ten Boom’s The Hiding Place and examine the biblical blueprints found in Psalm 1, Jeremiah 17, and Ecclesiastes 4. If you're currently facing heavy pressure, you'll discover why the "winds" of life are actually engineered by God to build your internal durability—and why true resilience isn't just about individual endurance, but about locking arms with a connected root system that refuses to give way.

In this episode of the Resilient Fire podcast, Dave challenges believers to break free from a captive mindset that views daily responsibilities—and even spiritual disciplines—as a chore or a sentence to be endured. Drawing a powerful contrast between the identity-erasing forced labor of biblical Egypt and WWII POW camps, he highlights how easily we can fall into treating our relationship with God like a demanding system focused solely on output. Dave unlocks the Hebrew word Avodah, which holds the dual meaning of both "work" and "worship," to remind Christians that Christ has redeemed the daily grind, erasing any divide between the sacred and the secular. By shifting from a mindset of survival to one of offering, listeners are encouraged to live out the "Secret Boss" principle—recognizing that every boardroom, flight line, and quiet spiritual practice is a space to serve Christ rather than a labor camp of our own making.

In this episode, Dave addresses the critical need for modern missionary organizations to adequately equip their personnel for the severe risks of fulfilling the Great Commission in high-threat environments. Recording from a high-threat security and survival training event in South Dakota, Dave highlights rising global statistics of anti-Christian violence and historical hostage situations to argue that sending missionaries with only theological training and plane tickets is a failure of leadership. He counters hyper-spiritual objections by citing biblical examples like Nehemiah and the Apostle Paul, who balanced radical faith with strategic security measures. Ultimately, Dave advocates for implementing comprehensive survival and security training to build resilience, urging ministry leaders to invest heavily in practical tactical preparation for those answering the call to dangerous regions.

In this episode Dave shifts from analyzing the "map" of a skeptical 3 AM reflection to engaging directly with the "terrain" of the argument, emphasizing that a believer’s role is not to win debates through human logic but to faithfully point to the authority of Scripture. Rooted in the principles of expository apologetics and 1 Peter 3:15, Dave tackles tough objections regarding subjective morality, religious hypocrisy, the psychological origins of faith, and the sheer scale of the universe, demonstrating that these challenges ultimately point back to a just Creator rather than disproving Him. He addresses the profound weight of human suffering and the perceived silence of God by highlighting that Christianity offers a Savior who intimately entered into pain through the cross, reframing prayer as a relational means of grace rather than a transactional vending machine. Concluding on the historical reliability of the New Testament and the foundational reality of the Resurrection, Dave reminds the audience that while historical evidence is compelling, it is ultimately the Holy Spirit who transforms hearts, offering a final word of encouragement to stay resilient for anyone still wrestling through their own dark 3 AM moments.

I talk a lot about physical endurance and leadership under pressure. But what happens when the fight is no longer external? In this episode, I explore the concept of SpiritualResistance—what you believe is true when everything else is stripped away.

I take a deep look at a "3 AM rant" posted by a man in the middle of a brutal fight with cancer. This wasn't just an emotional vent; it was a structured, articulate rejection of faith. Instead of rushing to quick answers, I use this episode to perform a pre-mission brief, mapping the five major obstacles of modern skepticism that we all encounter: geography, Scripture, psychology, morality, and the silence of suffering.

In this episode, I look at the life of Mitsuo Fuchida—the man who led the first wave of the attack on Pearl Harbor. I follow his journey from a dedicated warrior fueled by nationalistic pride to a man shattered by defeat, and ultimately, to a transformed messenger of peace. It is a powerful exploration of how hatred can consume an identity and how the radical, supernatural power of forgiveness can rewire a human soul.

In this episode, I explore the profound difference between "tactical humility" and "unyielding resistance." While some battles are won by moving under the radar, others require a refusal to move at all. I dive into the harrowing and heroic story of Col. George “Bud” Day, a man who proved that a broken body can still hold a line that an entire army cannot cross.

In this episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, Dave explores the harrowing 48-hour rescue of a U.S. Air Force Colonel in the Zagros Mountains. Using the military’s five phases of Personnel Recovery (PR), he examines how the tactical mission to bring a downed pilot home mirrors the relentless, sacrificial heart of God’s rescue mission for us.

The Five Pillars of Recovery

  1. REPORT: The honest admission of need (Psalm 34:6).
  2. LOCATE: The intentional search for the valued (Luke 15).
  3. SUPPORT: The endurance forged in the wilderness (Isaiah 41:10).
  4. RECOVER: The costly, decisive action of the Rescuer (John 15:13).
  5. REINTEGRATE: The journey toward healing and wholeness (Psalm 147:3).

In the wake of the historic Artemis II launch, Dave explores the intersection of high-stakes space exploration, survival, and the unmistakable fingerprints of a Master Architect. Drawing from his background and career, Dave breaks down why the journey to the Moon is more than just a triumph of human engineering—it is a witness to the intentionality of our Creator.

"NASA spent billions of dollars to build a life-support system for four people for ten days... God built a life-support system for 117 billion people that has lasted for thousands of years."
"The silence of God isn’t the absence of God. Just as gravity quietly guides a spacecraft through the void, His grace is the invisible force that sustains you through the trial and pulls you back toward the light."

In this episode, I reflect on my recent experience as Senior Cadre for the latest Combat Rescue Officer (CRO) Phase II screener. Out of 23 candidates, only 5 moved forward—a staggering 78% attrition rate.

I go beyond the physical "misery" of the pool and the ruck to explore the spiritual "laboratory" of selection. Using the Greek concept of the "Narrow Gate" and the imagery of the Refiner’s Fire, I discuss how high-pressure trials are designed not to break us, but to strip away the "dross" of ego and self-reliance to reveal the character of the Creator.

"The Refiner isn't trying to destroy you; He’s trying to see His reflection in you."

Episode Summary

In this episode of Resilient Fire, Dave explores the concept of "Tactical Humility" through the lens of a 20-year-old Navy sailor named Doug Hegdahl. After falling off his ship in 1967 and being captured by the North Vietnamese, Hegdahl survived the notorious "Hanoi Hilton" by convincing his captors he was "The Incredibly Stupid One." This persona allowed him to move freely, sabotage enemy equipment, and memorize the names of 256 POWs to the tune of "Old MacDonald." Dave connects this historical masterclass in ego-death to the life of Jesus Christ, who was underestimated and mocked on the Cross while performing the ultimate rescue mission for humanity.

In this final installment of our journey through the Book of James, I tackle the "last mile." It’s often the hardest part of any journey—the moment right before the breakthrough when the temptation to quit is at its peak. James closes his letter not with a soft goodbye, but with a strategic manual for endurance, prayer, and community restoration.

In This Episode:

  • The Deception of Hoarding (James 5:1–6): A "thunderclap" warning against building security on things that rot. Why true resilience is found in our integrity, not our bank accounts.
  • The Farmer’s Strategy (James 5:7–8): Why faith isn't a sprint. We discuss the "long-haul" patience required to wait for the "rains" we cannot control.
  • Holding the Bridge at Ramelle: Using the iconic finale of Saving Private Ryan to understand why we "hold the line." Hint: It’s because the reinforcements are already on the way.
  • The 24/7 Lifeline (James 5:13–16): Moving prayer from a "break glass in case of emergency" last resort to a primary daily rhythm.
  • No Man Left Behind (James 5:19–20): Why faith and resilience is a team sport. How to identify the "gray coals" in our circles and bring them back to the fire.

Key Takeaways & Quotes:

"Faith isn’t just about starting strong—it’s about finishing faithful."

  • Establish Your Heart: To set something so firmly that it cannot be moved, like a pillar anchored in a storm.
  • Community Healing: Faith isn't a solo sport. Healing often happens when we stop being "lone heroes" and start being honest with one another.

Practical Application for the Week:

  1. Patience over Panic: Identify one area where you are trying to force a result. Do the work, but trust God for the timing.
  2. Break the Silence: Are you carrying a burden alone? Reach out to one mentor or friend this week and let them pray for you.
  3. The Search Party: Is there someone in your life whose "fire" has gone gray? Reach out to them this week to help bring them back to the center of the pile.

In this episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, Dave goes "below the deck" to the engine room of the soul. Exploring James 4, we move past the outward symptoms of our words to the internal desires that fuel conflict. Using a high-speed Winter Olympic analogy, Dave discusses how pride creates friction in our lives and why true resilience requires the "strategic power" of submission.

Key Discussion Points

  • The Source of the Smoke (James 4:1–3): Understanding that external conflicts are often "inside jobs" triggered by hedonē—our internal desires for comfort, status, and convenience.
  • The Bobsled Analogy: How living in pride is like "fighting the ice track." We learn that spiritual resilience isn't about tensing up to exert our will, but about finding "streamline" through alignment with God.
  • The Dynamics of Alignment (James 4:7–10): A tactical look at the order of spiritual warfare: Submit to God first, then Resist the devil.
  • The Mist in the Mirror (James 4:13–15): A reality check on the brevity of life. Examining the Greek word atmis (vapor) to transform how we view our schedules and our significance.

Practical Application: Tending the Heart

  1. Stop the Friction: Audit your anger. Ask yourself: "Am I upset because God's will isn't being done, or because mine isn't?"
  2. The "Mist" Perspective: Use moments of frustration (traffic, failed plans) to breathe and acknowledge: "I am the mist; You are the King."
  3. Plan with a Pencil: Shift from demanding your way to declaring dependence. Practice the phrase, "If the Lord wills," to lower anxiety and increase resilience.

In this episode, I move from the mindset of Chapter 1 to the "mechanics" of Chapter 2. I break down what I call the "Academic Illusion"—the dangerous gap between knowing survival theory in a classroom and actually building a life-saving fire in a storm. Episode Summary

Welcome to the premiere of our deep dive into the Book of James. In this episode, Dave explores the "paradox of joy" found in James 1. We often view trials as interruptions or signs of God’s absence, but James argues they are the primary curriculum for our spiritual formation. From the history of James—the skeptic-turned-servant—to the imagery of the blacksmith’s forge, Dave discusses how pressure doesn't destroy faith; it reveals what kind of faith we actually have.

Key Scripture

  • James 1:2-4: "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness..."
  • James 1:5: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach..."
  • James 1:22: "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."

Main Takeaways

  • Trials are a "When," not an "If": Suffering isn't a sign that you've taken a wrong turn; it is a guaranteed part of the Christian life intended for your growth.
  • The Blacksmith’s Fire: God is the Master Artisan. He applies heat not to consume us, but to burn away the "dross" (impurities) so that our faith becomes pure, resilient, and valuable.
  • Wisdom vs. Relief: When under pressure, our instinct is to pray for the trial to end. James encourages us to pray for wisdom instead—the divine perspective needed to endure rightly.
  • The Danger of Spiritual Self-Deception: Knowledge without action produces fragility. Resilience is only formed when we move from merely "hearing" the Word to "doing" what it says.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are you interpreting your current pressure as God’s abandonment or as His formation?
  2. In what area of your life are you reacting with fear or anger instead of asking for Godly wisdom?
  3. Where have you been "listening" to God’s Word but delaying the actual "doing"?

In this episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, I unpack a true and unusual story from Colorado involving a bull elk that carried a tire around its neck for more than two years. What begins as a strange wildlife story becomes a powerful illustration of the spiritual, emotional, and relational burdens many of us carry far longer than God ever intended.

Through Scripture, personal reflection, and vivid imagery, this episode explores how burdens grow with us, how survival is not the same as freedom, and how true healing often requires surrender. Ultimately, this is a Gospel-centered reminder that freedom is not something we earn or fix ourselves — it’s something Christ provides when we allow Him to step in.

🎯 Key Themes & Takeaways

  • Burdens Grow If Left Untouched
Like the elk, many of us carry weights that increase over time — sin, shame, trauma, pride, or fear.
  • Looking Strong Doesn’t Mean Being Free
You can function, succeed, and appear solid while still suffocating spiritually.
  • Normalization Is Not Healing
Adapting to pain is not the same as being restored.
  • Freedom Often Costs Something
Just as the elk lost its antlers to lose the tire, God may remove things we value to save us from what’s destroying us.
  • We Are Designed for Dependence
Freedom comes through Christ, community, confession, discipleship, and accountability.
  • The Gospel Is the Ultimate Rescue
We don’t free ourselves — Christ intervenes, removes the burden, and restores our identity and purpose.

📖 Scripture References

  • Hebrews 12:1
  • Psalm 55:22
  • Matthew 11:28
  • Matthew 5:30
  • Galatians 6:2
  • John 8:36
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17, 20

🛠️ Practical Reflection Questions

  1. What “tire” are you carrying right now?
What burden, sin, habit, wound, or fear have you learned to live with instead of surrendering?
  2. Whose burden can you help remove?
Who in your life might need someone to notice, step in, pray, confess, and fight alongside them?

In this timely episode, Dave addresses a nation on edge and a culture increasingly unable to disagree without destruction. Against the backdrop of unrest, violence, and outrage-driven reactions, this episode calls Christians to something harder—and far more powerful—than rage: steadiness.

Rooted in Scripture and framed through the lens of resilience, restraint, and mission focus, this conversation explores what it means to stand firm in truth without sacrificing our witness. Drawing from Proverbs, James, the teachings of Jesus, and the example of Christ Himself, Dave challenges listeners to reject reactionary anger and embrace a faith that brings light without igniting more fire.

This is an episode for men and women who want to hold conviction without becoming combustible—and who believe the Gospel still advances best through disciplined love, clarity, and courage.

In this episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, I conclude the SERE and Faith Series by exploring the idea of a Code of Conduct — not just as a military concept, but as a deeply spiritual one. Drawing from SERE principles, biblical wisdom, and everyday life under pressure, this episode examines how character is revealed when comfort is stripped away and control is lost.

Rather than focusing on rules or performance, this conversation centers on identity under pressure — who we become when stress, fear, exhaustion, and uncertainty narrow our world. Through Scripture, reflection, and practical insight, I invite you to examine the formation of your inner life and the kind of resilience that leads not just to survival, but to wholeness.

Key Themes & Takeaways:

  • A Code of Conduct is not about restriction, but about preserving identity under pressure
  • Stress doesn’t create character — it reveals what has already been formed
  • Spiritual resilience is built long before hardship arrives
  • Integrity, kindness, and humility stabilize the soul in high-pressure environments
  • Formation happens intentionally or drift happens passively — there is no neutral ground
  • God is deeply invested not just in what we do, but in who we are becoming

Scripture Focus (ESV):

  • Micah 6:8 — Doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God
  • Romans 12:1–2 — Transformation through the renewing of the mind
  • Psalm 15:1–2 — Walking with integrity and speaking truth in the heart

These passages together form a spiritual Code of Conduct — not a checklist, but a framework for faithfulness when life applies heat.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where am I most tempted to drift when I’m tired, stressed, or discouraged?
  • Where has fatigue begun to erode integrity or clarity?
  • Where has cynicism tried to replace kindness in my life?
  • What would it look like to invite God to renew my mind in this season?
  • How is my inner life being formed — intentionally or by default?

Closing Encouragement:

Resilience is not just about enduring hardship — it’s about emerging from it whole, grounded, and faithful. A spiritual Code of Conduct protects identity, preserves integrity, and anchors the soul when circumstances are unstable. God does not ask us to form this character alone; He works in us, walks with us, and patiently shapes us over time.

Freedom is not the finish line—restoration is the work that follows.

In this episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, we move beyond escape and into what comes next. Drawing from SERE recovery principles and anchored in Psalm 40:2, Dave explores how God not only delivers us from captivity, but patiently restores our strength, stability, and confidence.

Recovery is often quieter than escape. It is slower. It feels vulnerable. But it is where lasting freedom is formed. God does not rush the healing process—He establishes our footing so we can stand firm when pressure returns.

Whether you’ve recently experienced deliverance or you’re still finding your balance after a hard season, this episode speaks to the sacred work of restoration and the faith required to trust God’s pace.

📖 Scripture Focus

Psalm 40:2
“He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”

🧭 Episode Themes

  • Why escape is only the beginning—not the end
  • The difference between freedom and wholeness
  • Recovery as a necessary, God-ordained process
  • What Psalm 40 teaches us about healing and stability
  • Why restoration takes time—and why that’s good
  • How God rebuilds trust, identity, and strength after captivity
  • The role of patience, waiting, and dependence in recovery
  • Why restored people become steady people

🪓 Key Takeaway

God did not rescue you just to leave you unsteady.
Restoration is not weakness—it is preparation.
The same God who lifts you out of the pit is faithful to establish your steps.

🎧 EPISODE SUMMARY

In survival training, escape is not panic—it is purposeful movement toward freedom. It requires patience, discipline, and a clear understanding of who you are and where you’re going.

In this episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, I explore Luke 4:18, where Jesus publicly declares His mission: to proclaim freedom to the captives and release the oppressed.

Many people aren’t physically imprisoned, but they are spiritually confined—by sin patterns, shame, fear, exhaustion, or performance-based faith. Jesus does not come to manage captivity. He comes to end it.

“Escape and Freedom” challenges all people to recognize hidden forms of bondage and follow Christ—not just out of captivity, but into lasting transformation.

🔥 KEY THEMES & TAKEAWAYS

  • Escape is deliberate, not desperate
  • Captivity often looks respectable and familiar
  • The enemy’s goal is compliance, not chaos
  • Freedom is usually a process, not a moment
  • Jesus doesn’t just open the door—He walks us out
  • Captivity distorts vision; freedom restores sight
  • Wilderness seasons often come between bondage and promise

📖 SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

  • Luke 4:18 — Jesus proclaims freedom to the captives
  • Isaiah 61:1 — The prophecy Jesus fulfills
  • Romans 12:2 — Renewal of the mind
  • John 8:36 — “If the Son sets you free…”
  • Exodus 13–14 — Leaving Egypt, learning freedom

🪵 PRACTICAL APPLICATION

  • Identify areas of captivity you’ve accepted as “normal”
  • Refuse to confuse comfort with freedom
  • Take small, intentional steps toward obedience
  • Renew your thinking with truth, not shame
  • Expect a wilderness season—and don’t turn back

🔔 CHALLENGE FOR THE WEEKWhere do you need to stop managing captivity and start responding to Christ’s call to freedom? Jesus still proclaims release. The question is whether you’ll follow Him out.

🎧 EPISODE SUMMARY

In survival scenarios, the greatest threat is often not an enemy—but the elements.

Heat, cold, wind, rain, darkness, and time slowly wear down the body and the will. In this episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, I explore how that same principle applies to the Christian life.

Most people don’t fall because of one catastrophic failure. They fall because of long exposure—unrelenting stress, spiritual fatigue, unanswered prayers, and the quiet erosion of hope.

In “Endure the Elements,” I connect some survival principles with biblical truth to show how God forms resilience, not by removing hardship, but by sustaining them through it.

This episode challenges us to stop interpreting hardship as abandonment and start seeing endurance as formation.

🔥 KEY THEMES & TAKEAWAYS

  • The elements don’t attack aggressively—they persist
  • Endurance is trained through small, faithful disciplines
  • Prolonged hardship can numb spiritual awareness if ignored
  • God promises presence, not avoidance, in trials
  • Consistency preserves life when intensity fails
  • Night seasons require BIBLICAL truth spoken to your own soul
  • God uses exposure to produce character, not comfort

📖 SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

  • James 1:2–4 — Trials produce steadfastness
  • Isaiah 43:2 — God’s presence in fire and flood
  • Matthew 7:24–25 — Building on the rock before the storm
  • Galatians 6:9 — Do not grow weary in doing good
  • Psalm 42:5 — Speaking hope to a weary soul
  • Romans 5:3–4 — Endurance produces character
  • Isaiah 40:31 — Strength for those who wait on the Lord

🪵 PRACTICAL APPLICATION

  • Identify the “elements” you are currently enduring
  • Focus on small acts of obedience rather than emotional motivation
  • Maintain spiritual disciplines even when they feel unproductive
  • Refuse to make permanent decisions during temporary darkness
  • Trust that God is using endurance to shape who you are becoming

🔔 CHALLENGE FOR THE WEEK

Where are you tempted to quit—not because you no longer believe, but because you’re tired?

Ask God for the strength to remain instead of escape.
Endurance is not passive—it is faithful trust under pressure.

Key Scripture: John 1:5
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Christmas Eve is a night filled with light—candles in windows, glowing trees, porch lights, and sanctuaries illuminated in the dark. But light is only meaningful because darkness is real. For many men and women, the darkness hasn’t lifted just because the calendar says Christmas.

In this special Christmas Eve episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, Dave reflects on the truth that Christmas is not the story of darkness disappearing—it is the story of light entering the darkness and holding its ground. Drawing from John 1:5, he explores endurance, faithful presence, and what it means to resist despair and remain grounded when the night feels long.

Jesus was not born into comfort or calm. He entered a world marked by political oppression, fear, uncertainty, and violence. Mary and Joseph were called to obedience without clarity. The first Christmas was anything but silent. Yet the Light came anyway—and the darkness could not stop it.

Christmas Eve is not a promise that circumstances will improve tomorrow. It is a reminder that the Light of Christ remains—and that darkness does not win.

🔥 Episode Themes

  • Light and darkness: why both are real
  • Endurance as a central theme of Christmas
  • John 1:5 and the power of remaining
  • The reality of the first Christmas night
  • Jesus entering contested territory
  • Faithful presence versus forceful escape
  • Refinement, identity, and spiritual endurance
  • Peace as confidence, not the absence of struggle

🧭 Key Takeaways

  • Christmas is about the Light holding steady, not darkness disappearing
  • Endurance is often quiet, unseen, and deeply faithful
  • Jesus overcame darkness by remaining, not retreating
  • Peace is not the absence of hardship, but confidence in who wins
  • Your faithfulness—especially when unseen—bears real light

🙏 Closing Encouragement

For those leading families, carrying silent burdens, serving faithfully behind the scenes, or walking through heavy seasons—your endurance matters. When you resist bitterness, remain faithful, and choose hope again, you are carrying light into dark places.

Christmas Eve reminds us of this truth:
You don’t have the power to overcome the darkness.
You only have to stand firm in the Light Christ has already given you.

Merry Christmas.
The Light has come.
And it remains.

In this episode of The Resilient Fire Podcast, I explore Week 4 of the SERE & faith series: Resist and Return. Just as SERE training teaches Airmen to maintain identity and honor despite captivity or coercion, Scripture teaches believers to stand firm when culture, temptation, or pressure demands spiritual compromise.

Using the example of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, this episode unpacks what it means to resist with integrity, remain loyal to Christ, and live out a witness that reflects who we truly belong to.

Key Points:

  • Resistance is loyalty, not rebellion.
  • Identity determines endurance — know who you are in Christ.
  • Pressure exposes what you believe.
  • Every “no” to compromise builds spiritual muscle memory.
  • Your spiritual witness is your honor code.

Featured Scripture

  • Daniel 3:16–18
  • Galatians 2:20
  • Romans 8:37
  • 2 Timothy 2:3

Reflection Questions

  1. When have you had to stand firm in your faith despite pressure?
  2. What compromises tempt you the most?
  3. How solid is your spiritual identity?
  4. What verse strengthens your sense of loyalty to Christ?

Field Mission for the Week

🔹 Memorize one identity-defining verse:
Galatians 2:20 or Romans 8:37.
🔹 Rewrite it in your own words.
🔹 Say it during moments of stress, temptation, or pressure.

Episode Summary

In this episode of The Resilient Fire Podcast, I dive into the SERE principle of evasion and connect it with the spiritual call to vigilance found in 1 Peter 5:8. Just as evasion requires awareness, discipline, and wise movement in the field, spiritual evasion requires believers to avoid temptation, stay alert to the enemy’s strategies, and move intentionally toward Christ. I explore how the enemy hunts, what spiritual traps look like, how complacency becomes a threat, and how to build a mindset that stays sharp and spiritually stealthy.

Key Points

  • Evasion isn't passive — it requires alertness, stealth, and intentional movement.
  • The devil hunts like a predator, looking for distraction, fatigue, isolation, and complacency.
  • Spiritual ambushes often come through subtle temptations, pride, bitterness, resentment, or unchecked habits.
  • Watchfulness requires sobriety — mental clarity, spiritual discipline, and reliance on Scripture.
  • We evade by choosing better routes — avoiding triggers, unhealthy environments, and unwise company.

Field Mission (Application Steps)

  1. Identify one weak perimeter in your spiritual life (fatigue, temptation, anger, distractions).
  2. Name one ambush point where the enemy consistently attacks—then choose a different route.
  3. Add one daily alertness habit, such as:
    • 60 seconds of Scripture upon waking
    • Turning off your phone for 10 minutes of prayer
    • Replacing negative input with worship or truth
  4. Strengthen your spiritual situational awareness by asking daily:
“Where might the enemy try to exploit me today?"

Recommended Reflection Questions

  • Where have I grown spiritually complacent?
  • What traps does the enemy use most consistently in my life?
  • What daily habits would increase my spiritual alertness?
  • Who can I bring into my accountability perimeter?
  • What “routes” or routines do I need to change?

🔥 Episode Summary:

In SERE training, the Rule of Threes helps you determine what matters most when everything falls apart:

  • 3 minutes without air
  • 3 hours without shelter
  • 3 days without water
  • 3 weeks without food

In this episode, Dave explores how these survival priorities mirror spiritual survival. Just like in the wilderness, your soul needs the right priorities in the right order.

This episode challenges Christians to examine what truly sustains their spirit, focuses their energy, and anchors their faith when life hits hard.

🏕️ Key Segments:

1. Why Priorities Matter in Survival & Faith

When crisis hits, you default to training and priorities. Spiritual resilience works the same way. (Matthew 6:33)

2. Three Minutes Without Air → Worship & Prayer

In survival, oxygen keeps the body alive. In faith, worship and prayer keep the soul breathing. (Psalm 150:6; 1 Thess. 5:17)

3. Three Hours Without Shelter → God as Your Refuge

Shelter protects from exposure — spiritually, God is your covering in chaos. (Psalm 46:1; Psalm 91:1–2)

4. Three Days Without Water → The Living Water

Physical dehydration leads to confusion; spiritual dehydration leads to despair.
Christ offers water that revives the soul. (John 7:37–38)

5. Three Weeks Without Food → Feeding on God’s Word

Sustained nourishment comes from Scripture, especially when life gets tough. (Matthew 4:4; Psalm 119:105)

6. Applying the Rule of Threes to Your Daily Walk

Field Mission for the Week:

  • Oxygen (Prayer): 3 mins of intentional breathing + prayer each morning
  • Shelter (God’s Presence): Memorize Psalm 46:1
  • Water (Spiritual Hydration): Identify one area where you feel dry
  • Food (God’s Word): Read one Psalm daily

7. Leadership Tie-In

Leaders set the spiritual climate where ever they are. When your priorities are aligned, your leadership becomes stable and life-giving.

8. Closing Reflection:

You survive what matters most by prioritizing what matters most. And God always comes first.

The Berlin Wall fell 36 years ago - November 9, 1989.

In this episode, I look back at one of history’s defining moments—the fall of the Berlin Wall—and draw spiritual parallels to the walls Christians build in their hearts and communities. Just as the wall in Berlin once separated families and nations, unseen spiritual walls still divide us from others and keep the Gospel from spreading freely.

In this episode I challenge listeners to tear down those barriers with humility, forgiveness, and the boldness of Christ, who broke down every wall that stood between God and humanity.

Ephesians 2:14 – Christ breaks down the dividing wall of hostility

John 4:7–26 – Jesus and the Samaritan woman

Luke 19:1–10 – Jesus reaches out to Zacchaeus

2 Corinthians 5:18–20 – The ministry of reconciliation

Philippians 2:3 – Humility over pride

2 Corinthians 3:17 – “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

🔥 Episode Summary:

Fear is one of the most dangerous forces in both the wilderness and the soul. In this debut episode, we explore how biblical faith equips people to overcome fear — on deployment, in leadership, in family life, and in spiritual warfare.

Drawing from USAF SERE principles (Survive, Evade, Resist, Escape), this episode challenges people to build a “spiritual survival mindset” rooted in God’s Word rather than emotion. Because when crisis hits, your body reverts to training — and your soul reverts to faith.

🏕️ Key Segments:

Segment 1 – The Survival Mindset:
Panic kills. Faith focuses. Learn how fear clouds judgment and how Scripture clears your vision.
(Joshua 1:9)

Segment 2 – The Mind Game:
True peace is a perimeter guard for your heart and mind.
(Philippians 4:6–7)

Segment 3 – A Field Example:
Even in isolation or spiritual fatigue, the presence of God breaks fear’s grip.
(Psalm 23:4)

Segment 4 – Field Application:
Your Field Mission for the Week:

  • Start each day declaring: “God is with me wherever I go.”
  • Write down your biggest fear.
  • Pair it with Scripture:
    • Fear of failure → Philippians 1:6
    • Fear of danger → Psalm 91:2
    • Fear of rejection → Romans 8:38–39
  • Replace reaction with prayer.

Segment 5 – Leadership and Brotherhood:
Fear spreads fast — but courage spreads faster. Lead from faith, not fear.
(Proverbs 28:1)

Segment 6 – Closing Reflection:
Faith isn’t a feeling; it’s obedience in motion. Trust what God said over what fear screams.

✝️ Takeaway Quote:

“It’s not your enemy’s presence that determines your outcome — it’s your response."

🪖 About the Podcast:

The Resilient Fire Podcast equips Christians and warriors of faith to live by biblical resilience and SERE-inspired discipline — learning to survive, endure, and return with honor and faith intact.

When it comes to having faith as a Christian, there are times when we will face the "wilderness." It's a place where the enemy wants us to feel alone, isolated, and without any sort of help. But that's not necessarily the truth of the matter. Listen in as Dave talks through having faith in the wilderness as he kicks off this 10-part series on faith and survival!

"The Lord God said "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.'" (Genesis 2:18, NIV). In this episode we build upon our kingdom identity so that we can live in true Christian community. When God created man, He knew that we were never meant to be without community. And when communities have a mission or a task to pursue, that is when kingdom-building happens. Listen in as Dave talks about the value of community, but also about the critical element that allows us to experience true community with one another. Then...go and make disciples!!

Happy new year! Are you making a resolution? Not to be a downer, but statistics show that most resolutions don't last beyond a few weeks. We lose the motivation and focus, and the resolution falls off our scope. In this episode, I talk about one reason why: because we are living in a false identity. If our identity is based off of anything other than what God has given us, then anythingwe are looking to change may never take hold. We must get our kingdom identity in line first...then we'll see the fruit of that identity take hold in our life. Listen in for some biblical wisdom from the book of Judges, and hear how you are viewed as a child of God!

Knowing how to build a shelter when you're out in the wilderness is a critical skill to survival. Everything around you is trying to take you away from your 98.6 degree optimum operating temperature. Whether it's the terrain, or animals, or weather making an impact, a shelter serves the function of protecting you from the hostile environment around you.

God is often called the "refuge" or "shelter" throughout the Bible. Scripture encourages us to seek Him and rest in the shelter and protection that He provides because He created us and loves us that much. Psalm 91 verses 1 and 2 say "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord 'He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust."

Where ever you find yourself in your walk (with God or without), there is comfort when we rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Listen in to hear some principles about shelters in the woods, but more importantly, about the importance of seeking the Father as the ultimate shelter.

Hebrews 12:1-2a says "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." When we are in our race, we've got to cut the dead weight that holds us back and trust that the course is marked ahead of us. In this episode Dave discusses getting back in the saddle and how he uses this scripture to guide him not only in his race, but in his faith life as well.

In this episode, Dave talks about the infamous "MITC" fire where everything is dropped to build a life-saving, sustainable fire. When we face crisis or on-going problems, there are resources available. But in the last three verses of Psalm 91, God provides eight promises that can help us overcome anything we are facing. All we must do is love Him and know His name.

When we look at our lives today, we have so many things that are working to pull us into darkness. One look at the 24 hour news cycle gives you enough information to know that the world can be a dark place. And when we zoom into our personal lives, all of us have struggles, trials, and situations that get us to a point of not knowing how we will make it through.

In this episode, Dave talks about having faith in the storm - whatever that storm may be. Using an example from a prisoner of war from the Vietnam War, Dave dives into two articles of the Code of Conduct, and explores how we can grow learn to trust God, no matter the circumstances.

To kick off season two, we briefly talk through the Ten Commandments and how they apply to a Christian's life. Then we look at the military Code of Conduct, which is what guides behavior of service members in combat and in captivity. In both examples, there will be failures to do everything perfectly right...there will be mistakes. And in both examples, there is room for forgiveness, grace, and mercy.

"At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life." (Titus 3:3-7, NIV)

It's Monday morning. You have 168 hours ahead of you until next Monday morning. How busy are you going to be this week? Constantly on the go? Under seemingly constant tension? If any of this sounds like you, you probably need some margin space in your life. Even thousands of years ago Moses dealt with the same thing.

In a world of competing demands, and the "glorification of busyness," we must make sure we are creating margins so that we can respond to emergencies and contingencies. Are you physically prepared to respond to an emergency? How about financially? What about spiritually?

Dave discusses margins in the bible, margins in survival, and how to get some margin room in your life.
