Compared to a year ago, retail fertilizer prices show all fertilizers have increased significantly, with several having well over 100% price increases. For example, 10-34-0 is now 71% more expensive, MAP is 72% higher, DAP is 79% more expensive, potash is 119% higher, urea is 148% more expensive, UAN32 is 171% higher, UAN28 179% is more costly, and anhydrous is 204% higher compared to last year.

Mobile Internet usage from connected devices like smart irrigation controllers has exploded over the last decade. From 2007-2017, data traffic on AT&T’s wireless network increased more than 360,000 percent. But the upcoming 2G/3G network sunset dates are rapidly approaching in 2022. Implementing a transition plan will be essential for businesses to avoid significant disruption when these critical wireless networks they depend on for operating their smart controllers or other IoT devices the connectivity suddenly goes dark.
Each iteration of wireless network technology has historically replaced the previous generation. But the idea that 5G will be a direct replacement for 4G is false. In fact, they’re complementary and designed to coexist. Furthermore, 4G is expected to last for at least another decade, possibly longer, sharing the available spectrum between 4G LTE and 5G devices because of their integrated dependencies. The first 4G LTE sunset announcements as such aren’t expected until after 2030, which means that companies can safely invest in 4G-based IoT solutions today and for the foreseeable future.

Cannabis growers as a group are more interested in quality and sustainability than most water managers. Indoor growers have a ton of knowledge about water and nutrients and use the knowledge to their advantage. They are managing indoor cultivation scientifically. They perform at a very high level and have a thirst for more knowledge.
Cannabis grown indoors yields an average value of $112 per square foot (0.1 square meter), according to a report on indoor farming by Agrilyst, well ahead of greens ($64 per square foot) and strawberries ($22). Agrilyst calculated indoor cannabis production to be 9,000 times more productive on a dollar basis than commercial corn production. The Denver University Law Review calculated a return of 22 cents to $6.67 per gallon (3.8 liters) of water from cannabis grown in Colorado, compared to 2 to 3 cents per gallon ROI from potatoes, another of the state’s major crops.
This sets up an interesting discussion about the best use of our most precious natural resource, water. As water gets more scarce, should the water go to those who use it most economically or to those who grow food? Grass growing in strips between sidewalks and streets (commonly known as boulevards or parking strips) is not very useful but difficult to irrigate efficiently. As such, most of the water applied to these areas is wasted in overspray and runoff.

The cost of drought comes in a variety of forms. Examples of economic impacts include farmers who lose money because drought destroyed their crops or ranchers who may have to spend more money to feed and water their animals. Economic impacts can be both direct, such as decreases in dairy production, and indirect, as seen by increases in the price of cheese.
In addition to the economy, drought also affects the environment and society. For example, drought shrinks the food supplies of animals and damages their habitats. Dr. Dave Goldhamer suggests for high yields next almond season ensure your almonds are not stressed during September. Be sure to eliminate stress on the tree as soon as the nuts are off, which means do not turn off your irrigation. In his trial, he discovered cutting off post-harvest irrigation resulted in an 800lb/ac yield loss the following year.
After harvest, cutting off irrigation to your almonds trees may be the most significant contributing factor for creating low yields next year. Dave Goldhamer has conducted some excellent research on the positive effects of post-harvest irrigation on almonds.

Summer is the most stressful time for landscape plants. Mix a drought into the equation, and you have a recipe for disaster in your landscape. Without enough moisture, plants can’t function normally and are predisposed to damage by pests or diseases. Drought also makes plants less winter-hardy, especially if the drought occurs in fall as plants go dormant. It would be remarkable to water every day when it was most beneficial to water. Still, life happens, and water managers are often asked to ensure water sprinklers are not watering during specific days and times. HOA meetings, municipal restrictions, outdoor weddings, and sports tournaments are just a few of the many reasons sprinklers can water at all times of the day.
In the past, water managers used block days to ensure no water runs during these critical activities. However, now with strong municipal restrictions, it is more difficult to water. For example, when a city tells us, we can’t water after 10 am. Using the block days feature, if we block a day, no watering will occur. The same issue is true if the restriction is before 10 am and after 6 pm. These drought restrictions make it harder to water.
Time restrictions, a new feature of Jain Unity, make watering during strict restrictions due to drought easy. A time restriction can span any period from 1 minute to days, months, or years. In addition, you’ll can easily configure and set any recurring restrictions, with or without an end date, of repeating events such as mowing day, site maintenance or inspection days, holidays, municipal restrictions, interval watering, and others throughout the season.

Weather information beyond temperature and simple devices like rain sensors is critical for precise irrigation management. Plant scientists teach us to balance the amount of water depleting from the landscape due to weather, the amount of water applied via irrigation, and free water from the heavens (rainfall!). Pistachio trees are one of the most valuable crops grown in California’s Central Valley. With so much value, it is not hard to find a pistachio orchard while driving up and down Highway 99 or Interstate 5. Despite so many acres being dedicated to pistachio farming, pistachios are actually not native to California, they are native to the Middle East, a far cry from Fresno and Kern Counties.
Pistachios first made an appearance in the United States in the 1930’s, with increased development starting after 1960. Now, across many acres of California’s “Westside” you will easily see pistachio orchards ranging from 100 to 2,000 acres, varying in age from 7 months to 17 years.

Cotton production is a $25 billion-per-year industry in the United States, and the U.S. exported almost $8 billion worth of cotton last year. Cotton is one of our thirstiest crops, and using drip irrigation can reduce water use while improving yields. Two of the most well know names in Agriculture today are Steve Malanca and Erik Wilson the cofounders of the My Job Depends on Ag.
One of their goals is to spread the word about how everyone depends on ag, whether thy think so or not. They have been successful in many ways. Their vision, through this grassroots effort, is to show how many people’s lives are related, connected and, most importantly, dependent on agriculture.

By putting a face with entire agriculture industry chain, they hope the impact of agriculture will be recognized by not just political leaders, but consumers as well. This would make a huge difference to the farmers of California.

This Friday, Dr. Franklin Gaudi, from the Irrigation Training and Research Center at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, provides an overview and specifics of distribution uniformity.
Definitions and evaluation techniques are emphasized in this lunch and learn, ranging from how to take a pressure measurement to what specific measurements are needed for evaluation.
Several irrigation methods will be discussed. Irrigation systems can be “tuned up” to conserve water and power and maintain adequate surface water and groundwater qualities.
This lunch and learn helps you determine which tune-up technique meets your specific situation. The techniques and programs covered are the standard used for DWR-funded evaluation projects throughout California.

Senate Bill 88 (SB88) is a game-changer for California Ag water. It requires the State Water Resources Control Board to adopt new Water Diversion Measurement and reporting regulations for surface water diversions. Water users have been required to report diversions since 1966, but these regulatory changes added requirements and increased penalties. These regulations require using a device to measure and record the amount of water used and diverted. It is also required to have online reporting of water used, and diverted.
