Goal setting is an area that you have a complicated relationship with the concept.  Sometime goal setting has worked out great and sometimes it hasn't worked out so great.

Goal setting can bring out the best or the worst in you depending on what your relationship to goals is.

Today's podcast takes a deep dive and answers a couple of important questions.

  1. What is the purpose of goals?
  2. How do I use goals in a healthy way?

Enjoy the show and let me know what you think about goals.                                    _____________________ For more listening options and several FREE resources provided by New Work Revolution, please visit GrowthandFreedom.media.

Retention is something that a leader should always care about when it comes to building a team. Every person that you hire is an investment that has a positive or negative ROI.

I used to worry about retention a lot.  I noticed that the way I cared was more what someone leaving would mean for me vs. what it means for the purpose leaving.  Ironically, when I stopped worrying about people leaving and started worrying more for my teams well being, positive things happened with my team building process.

This week's podcast breaks down how I did it.

Enjoy the episode and let me know your thoughts.

Most of us play a destructive game when it comes to time.  The game is trying to get everything done all the time and whoever gets the most stuff done wins.

As you may notice when you play this game, it's unfulfilling and also destructive.

Growth and Freedom is the name of this podcast because that's what we want for you as a leader.  Operating in the above paradigm creates bondage for those that choose to play that way.

What is you stopped worrying about time management and focused on something else instead? That's the focus of today's podcast.

What I love about most business owners is how giving they are. There is another group of business owners, however, who tend to be more me-centered and are eager to tell you how great they are. For the business owners on the giving side, it's hard to engage in thought leadership and sharing of ideas. It feels to self- promotional.

This week I talk with master connector and messager, Michael Roderick. I have been in a mastermind with Michael for the past few months and have been so impressed with his insight into messaging and connecting. So I asked him to be on the podcast because I know many of you, want to grow in this area as well.

Michael and I dive into his approach for overcoming the reluctance to do thought leadership as well as how to communicate more effectively with your tribe.

You probably know a lot of people who are doers or dreamers. The doers put their head down and plow through their work simultaneously disregarding relationships and the world around them. The dreamers spend a lot of time thinking about things and talking about things but they have the opposite problem of the doer, they don't do much.

Powerful business owners pay attention to the world around them and also create space for engaging in the things that they see needs to be done.

Finding your balance between these two paradigms will help you be more effective, efficient and consistent in your leadership.

Check out this week's podcast as I dive into some ways that you can find this balance for yourself.

As I prepared for our monthly webinar recently on stepping away from your office successfully, a familiar concept of "playing your game" came up. As I thought about, I asked myself "what are the most important components that a leader needs to have to enable them to play their game full out?"

I stepped up to the whiteboard and started writing and creating. As I did this, a pattern emerged for what those components are.

That's the subject of today's podcast. I break down the formula and talk about what each one is and what's the biggest challenge you face with doing them.

I am also curious what you think about the formula. Is there anything that you think is missing or needs to be taken out? Check in and let me know.

Entrepreneurs often have new, cutting edge ideas that are so new that the world hasn't caught up to them yet. If you are an entrepreneur, you likely have a lot of ideas like this that can be given to the world with the right packaging and format.

Today, I speak with Vikrant Shaurya, CEO of BestSellingBook.com and we chat about the amazing world of book publishing.

If you are like most people, writing a book feels like a process that is too big to conquer. (Side note: you ever get tripped on the spelling of a word? That just happened to me with conquer. Could not for the life of me remember how to spell it.) Successful book writing takes a team that knows what they are doing and can guide you through the proper sequence to put an amazing book together.

In today's interview we talk about:
* The results that thought leaders are getting by writing a book * Where a great book starts. * How to structure and market your book successfully. * How to create an amazing and unique book.

Vikrant and I cover a lot of ground as well as tips to the book writing process.

The counterintuitive thing about freedom is that, in many ways, it comes from having boundaries and personal discipline.

You may be like one of the many entrepreneurs I have spoken or worked with over the years that does their best to not be tied down to things.

If you want more freedom, it may lie in doing the opposite of what you have been doing. This week's podcast dives into this concept and what it can do for you and your freedom longterm.                                  _____________________ For more listening options and several FREE resources provided by New Work Revolution, please visit GrowthandFreedom.media.

There are two issues that you could put into the top tier of workplace issues. One of them is communication and the other is interruptions.

One of the better things to come from working at home is the reduction in the "hey, got a minute" interruptions that happen to you several times in a typical day.

Even though you may not be back at the office yet, you still have interruptions from text messages, email and tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams.

In today's podcast, I interview the founder and CEO of Volley. Volley is an asynchronous way to communicate with your team that allows for better clarity, interpretations and relief from interruptions. Josh and I dive into all things workplace communication and how you can do it better.                                    _____________________ For more listening options and several FREE resources provided by New Work Revolution, please visit GrowthandFreedom.media.

There are two management types that run teams. One is very relational and great with building rapport with their team. The other is very processed and outcome oriented and doesn't have time for the fluffy nonsense of people and their feelings.
I happen to fall in the latter category and early on in my career, it almost got me fired.

This week, I sat down with employee engagement expert, Dr Beverly Kaye, and we discussed simple tips and approaches that a busy manager can use to engage their team in a more meaningful way. Not only does this benefit the employee but it pays financial dividends to the company as well.

As a leader, you are likely the kind of person that got to where they are by making things happen through hard work and effort.

When the time comes for leaders to shift their approach, they struggle to make the transition from being a doer to being a planner and behind the scenes strategist. They continue to pour their effort into the day-to-day ground level work of the business to feel like they are making a difference.

Getting things is a good thing but not if it comes at the expense of avoiding the bigger game that you were called to play.

Caring about other people's feelings is a good thing. Like all good things, however, you can go too far. Particularly when caring about someone else's feelings comes at the expense of your own.

This comes in handy when you are faced with delivering bad news, giving a boundary, or handling a confrontational situation. In some cases, delivering truth with grace can be a life changing experience for you and for others.

You don't wake up in the morning and think "I really hope someone judges me today". In fact, you would likely prefer that this didn't happen.

Ever heard that you can have too much of a good thing? It's true. Effort is something that most business owners are familiar with. While most people see the fruits of your labor, they don't see how hard you pushed to get to where you are.

There was a time respected leaders thought that the biggest threat to society was going to be.....leisure time? For real. In this day of hustle culture, you may feel like you are a ways off of that reality.

As a successful person, it's easy to adopt the mindset of more is more. The reality is that the more you do, the less return on that effort you receive.

This week's episode dives into effort and when to recognize you are doing too much and what to do instead.

When a leader drives too hard, they can often miss the signs that are pointing them to an important breakthrough in their leadership.  Driven leaders never met a problem or obstacle that they couldn't fix. When leaders don't get something done, they lean into their ability to get it done and try harder the next time.   This process has it's limitation.   Perhaps there is a bigger issue with why you didn't follow through on a project and get it done.  Maybe it wasn't that you didn't have time or because your spouse called you to come home early the other day.  Maybe there's a bigger issue at play.   Some leaders get distracted by more ideas and that keeps them from implementing their current ideas.  Some leaders want more information but aren't sure where to draw the line on how much information is enough.  Other leaders live in fear of what could go wrong if they don't do it "right".   Regardless of what kind of leader you are, this one tip in today's podcast will help you identify and address your lack of follow through in a productive way. _____________________

This episode is about having a heart for difficult conversations. We discuss 3 things you can do to foster a heart for this.

You may be avoiding something difficult right now. Perhaps that something difficult is a conversation with someone in your life?

No one wants to be disliked.  Because of this we put a value on feeling good about ourselves over getting real with others.

The benefits of this in the short term is that you fool yourself into believing your relationships are better than they are. In the long term, you don’t move toward your vision as efficiently as you could be.

Your leadership growth is depending on it.
