Join Hunt Advisors, Austin Atkinson, Garth Jenson and Eric Bachofner as they dive into the major upcoming changes to Colorado’s big game draw system, a shift that will impact every hunter looking to chase elk, deer, and other prized species in the state. Here we unpack the sweeping changes that move Colorado from a preference-based draw to a 50-50 split, meaning half of the available tags will be allocated based on preference points, while the other half will be completely randomized.
What does this mean for hunters who have been banking points for years? Should you burn them now or wait? And how will the new season date structures, non-resident allocations, and revamped tag reissue system affect your strategy going forward? We also break down the new preference point fee system, the elimination of Colorado’s hybrid draw, and the implications of the state’s once-in-a-lifetime rule for moose, sheep, and mountain goat. With these game-changing regulations taking full effect in 2028, now is the time to plan ahead.
Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or just starting out, this episode is a must-listen to help you navigate the evolving landscape of Colorado hunting. Buckle up, because the game just changed—and we’re here to make sure you stay ahead of it!

Welcome to this episode of the Built to Hunt Podcast, where we’re focusing on expert strategies for pursuing one of North America’s most iconic big-game animals: the mule deer. Host Bransen Jackson, a seasoned guide who’s hunted premier units year after year, shares a deep dive into what it takes to succeed in the field.
We’ll break down the unique challenges of hunting these elusive deer, from understanding their feeding and migration patterns to learning how elevation and weather shifts impact their behavior.
In this episode, we dive into the high-stakes world of limited-entry units, where hunters must manage high expectations and adapt strategies for general and special season hunts alike. Bransen explores when to take an aggressive approach versus exercising patience, and why knowing the nuances of summer, fall, and even winter behavior can be the difference between a successful hunt and a missed opportunity.
Whether you’re here to learn tips for your next mule deer hunt or simply to enjoy the stories from the field, this episode is packed with insights to help you make the most of every moment in mule deer country.

In this episode of the Built To Hunt Podcast, we dive deep into Utah’s deer management strategy with special guest Dax Mangus, a key member of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and Big Game Program Coordinator. As Utah battles with declining deer populations, factors like habitat improvement, hunting regulations, and public opinion shape the current management plan. Dax sheds light on the 100,000-acre+ habitat restoration initiative, the impact of energy development on deer populations, and the vital role GPS collar studies play in tracking deer health and behavior.
We also discuss the importance of balancing a healthy buck-to-doe ratio, changes to weapon allocation, and the unique four-point restriction system in Pine Valley. How does Utah’s approach compare to other states, and are these measures enough to ensure a sustainable deer population?
Dax shares insights on how public surveys influence season structures and the challenges in shifting season dates. Join us as we explore the complex intersection of conservation, hunting satisfaction, and policy in Utah’s deer management efforts.

Glossary:
Aperture - Aperture refers to the opening of a lens's diaphragm through which light passes. It is calibrated in f/stops and is generally written as numbers such as 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, and 16. A smaller aperture value will also blur your background because it is shortening the distance that can be in focus.
ISO - ISO is your camera's sensitivity to light as it pertains to either film or a digital sensor. A lower ISO value means less sensitivity to light, while a higher ISO means more sensitivity.
Shutter Speed - Shutter speed is the speed at which the shutter of the camera closes. A fast shutter speed creates a shorter exposure — the amount of light the camera takes in — and a slow shutter speed gives the photographer a longer exposure. A slower shutter speed will also make a moving object appear blurry.
Prime - A lens that has no zoom range. They are often sharper, lower aperture (more light, smooth blurry background), are cheaper, and lighter.
