A PASSAGE THAT IS EITHER MISINTERPRETED OR IGNORED?On Sunday, Paul will tell us something we don't often hear in contemporary Christian culture.A lot of us grew up hearing it ALL the time, and now we seem to be living through an overcorrection. It's all about how we relate to people who don't know Jesus and how we grow up in God's family.Understanding what the Bible says and putting it into practice allows us to grow into the people God wants us to be.

Rewards in heaven! What comes to mind when you read that?ARE there such things as heavenly rewards? If so, what about salvation by grace? Is it wrong to think about being rewarded in heaven? Life here is all too short, but then it goes on forever. This Sunday, the apostle Paul will teach us something about HEAVEN that many Christians fail to grasp. (Probably Bible teachers assume too much.)We will tackle that this Sunday, and I promise you, it's a GAME CHANGER.

A great danger is to spend our lives on things that do not matter. This Sunday we will open our Bibles in 2 Corinthians 4 to learn how to avoid that tragedy. The secret, according to Paul, is knowing who we are and where the treasure of eternal significance is found. PETER WANTS TO TALK TO US ABOUT OUR ATTITUDE When I was a kid my Mom talked to me about my attitude all the time. Reading 1 Peter again this week made me remember that she was quite right to do so. In 1 Peter 4, the apostle talks to us very directly about our attitude. What he says is simple and so timely that it could have been taken from today's breaking news. I hope you'll take time again to read the whole epistle of 1 Peter before Sunday. Focus on the first paragraph of chapter 4 in particular. This week I have talked to several people away from the church who were visibly stressed about world events: wide eyes, raised voice, anxious talk. "The way this world is going, I just KNOW the time is short..."

Identity.

For most of us, it’s not as stable as it once was. Loss, change, pain, and fear can all shake our sense of who we ARE.

That’s why the next passage in 1 Peter 2 is so vital. I hope you’ll join us Sunday for worship as we look at one of the most staggeringly beautiful passages in the New Testament. It tells us exactly who we ARE.

God's Word is treated differently even among people who say they are following Jesus. Some people use it as a source for quick inspirational quotes in the morning. Others, being more dutiful, do more serious reading, but don't seem to benefit much from it.

According to the apostle Peter, the Word of God has ALREADY given us new life, and what we do with the Word NOW makes a huge difference. God has provided all you need. You just need to do what He lovingly tells you.

Jesus said in Matthew 24 that two contrary things were indicators of the end: people’s love would grow cold and the gospel would be preached.

So let’s love God and people.

Let’s tell people the good news.

And let’s remember that evil will not win in the end.

Last Sunday we began a journey through 1 Peter, a letter from a pastor comforting scattered, suffering people. It could not be more timely in this strange age of loss, displacement, and unexpected troubles.

As he begins his letter, before Peter addresses present suffering, he gives us a view of future glory. It has been there all along, but I was so enthralled with what I found that I had to text some people about it even as I was writing the sermon!

Under pressure. Harassed. Mistreated. Have you felt that way recently?

Christians in times more difficult that our own received a pastoral letter from Peter, the once-impetuous disciple of Jesus. His purpose was to tell them how to bear up under their difficulties. And he has much to teach them. Peter himself has suffered, and learned, and changed.

What Peter said to scattered, outcast Christians nearly 2000 years ago is encouraging, comforting and timely for us.

The basics of the doctrine of Scripture:

Scripture is authoritative – as Wayne Grudem states, “The authority of Scripture means that all the words in Scripture are God’s words in such a way that to disbelieve or disobey any word of Scripture is to disbelieve or disobey God.”

Scripture is inerrant – Scripture is without error and possess no contradiction. Everything that Scripture says is truth, since God never lies and is completely trustworthy.

Scripture is sufficient – Everything we need to live this life for the glory of God is found in Scripture.

On Sunday, we will continue our brief series on doctrine. The word "doctrine" makes some people nervous, and I can understand why.

Learning ABOUT God can be a dangerous thing if you think of God as a hard lesson to be learned.

We are told to LOVE God and to love Him, we must KNOW Him. So we are learning who God is and what He said! That is all doctrine is!

Benefits of learning biblical truth (doctrine): Greater love for God. There is no one greater you will ever meet or enjoy more. Learning to study His Word more effectively. To know Him, you need to hear from Him. More ability to explain and defend your faith in God. Someone so great deserves to be introduced!

If you will humbly work to hear God's Word and love Him, it will change your life. I look forward to continuing the journey with you.

"Isn't everybody just guessing when talking about God?"

It's a fair question.

Beginning this Sunday in our worship gatherings and small groups, we begin a journey into the basics of what the Bible teaches. This is often called "doctrine" or "theology." But don't let the terms scare or bore you - the Bible is filled with God's truth, and our study is just a simple way to organize and learn it.

Some people worry that if they dive into doctrine, they may become a bit odd. (Or stuck up!) But no need to worry. You just have to study God's Word with the right attitude and for the right reason. As I will show you on Sunday, knowing God is the very BEST thing that can happen to you. We will keep it simple and relational. With God's help, we will become more like the people He wants us to be!

LET'S GIVE THANKS ON SUNDAY Maybe your day was like mine. It had blessings, laughter, but also some reminders of how hard life can be. How do we take it all in and stay joyful and faithful? One of the vital tools is to be GRATEFUL.

We will explore that on Sunday in both morning services: 9:00 and 10:30. Tell a friend you are grateful for them and invite them to come with you!

This is a GREAT Sunday for friends and family to hear the gospel! If someone you care about is not entirely sure of their salvation, INVITE them.

If you have already trusted Christ, the parable will be just as helpful. It unpacks the one thing needed to be pleasing to God.

THE RETURN OF THE LORD Back in March when the lockdown began, I quickly changed my preaching calendar in an effort to offer guidance and comfort from the Bible to our hurting families and congregation.

The passage I was scheduled to preach back then is Luke 17:20-37. Take time to read it now, and you may see why I changed the plan and why it is so timely now.

There is too much bad news today to mention in a single email. To make matters worse, there is so much misinformation circulating that many people have not heard the news; if they have, they may not believe it!

In all quarters, there is a heartbroken cry for justice. Even so, many people calling for justice disagree deeply on what justice means, who should have it, and who deserves it.

In light of all this, the sober warning from Jesus in Luke 17 should serve as a word of comfort and a call to action to us. I hope you'll join us at 9:00 or 10:30a.

COURAGE You'd probably have to be a seminary graduate to miss such an obvious idea, but it recently struck me that the many people in Scripture who were told to not be afraid and to be courageous instead must have been quite fearful. They were obviously about to act like cowards or it would not have been mentioned!

Beginning this Sunday, I'd like to explore some of the stories of the courageous people in Scripture. We can learn how to be courageous from their example. Fearful days call for courageous Christians, so let's learn together!

WHAT IF? That's a question I've been asking myself a LOT. Probably you've been doing the same.

This Sunday, we will open one of the little jewels of the Old Testament - the book of Habakkuk. Habakkuk wrote some 600 years before the birth of Jesus. He was troubled by the wickedness of his nation and asked God about it. He was not expecting the answer: God would judge His people through the mighty army and empire of Babylon.

As you can imagine, that caused Habakkuk even MORE distress. But then, he understood, and he prayed.

Before Sunday, READ the WHOLE book. It is short and it could not be more timely for people living under the cloud of WHAT IF?

As the pandemic and its restrictions drag on, the suffering mounts.

When you add to that the everyday evil that afflicts our country and world, it can all seem too much to bear.

Sunday, we’ll be exploring a very practical section of Proverbs to gain wisdom for the journey! If you’re a parent, grandparent, or simply want to help the next generation thrive, I hope you’ll join us in one of three services: 9:00a, 10:30a, and 5:30p

Pastor Bruce Garner // Ever feel crunched for time? That may be the easiest (or possibly the dumbest) question anyone could ask you these days!

Almost everyone I talk to is pressured and scrambling to “find the time” or “make the time” to “do what they need to do.” Yes, we say funny things when we talk about our precious time. (After all, who can really make it or find it?)

Sunday, we will walk beside Jesus in the gospel of Luke again as He gets into a public fight (in a worship service, no less!) over TIME. The outcome of that fight is a wonderful lesson I am trying to apply to my life TODAY. Hope you can bring your time-starved family and friends and listen to Jesus reorient and refresh us all.

Pastor Bruce Garner // Thanks for looking out for me!

HE'S DOWN! SHOULD WE SHOOT HIM?!? There’s an old cliche that the only army that shoots its wounded is the Christian church. Like many cliches, it has some truth in it. Too many Christians have discovered that they fell into sin and no one came to help. I’ve heard too many stories of people who were wounded and abandoned.

Is that the best we can do? NO.

Sunday, I want to share a passage from Scripture that tells us what sort of congregation we should be, and how we should treat one another as we follow Jesus together. I hope you’ll join me, and if you have a friend who has been wounded by church, ask them to come with you. Actually doing what God says always brings wholeness.

Pastor DJ McMoil // Growing Up: Obey

This Sunday, I have the honor of preaching Matthew 19-16-26 to you, helping Pastor Bruce finish his series on some fundamentals on the Christian faith. The topic will be Obey, and I think it can be a difficult one to get right as we try to apply it. On the one hand, we can recoil from the idea of God requiring our obedience; on the other, we can overestimate the contribution that obedience makes to our salvation. We will dig into Scripture to learn to fall in the gap between those two and give Jesus control of our hearts and actions!

Pastor Bruce Garner // JESUS THE DIVIDER A few years ago, a good friend started reading the gospels carefully, and Jesus made him a little uncomfortable. He’d read the Bible for many years, but somehow missed the hard edges!

DOES GOD HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE ANGRY? As we listen to Jesus in the gospel of Luke this Sunday, I can nearly guarantee you’ll feel the tension of that question.

You may have never Jesus’ words from the end of Luke before, but they are vitally important. Jesus tells His disciples in urgent, eternal terms exactly what is coming! Wise people will listen and be greatly rewarded by God!

Pastor Bruce Garner // WHO NEEDS COMMUNITY? Years ago a Harvard professor published research in a now-famous book, “Bowling Alone.” Our sense of community was fraying, he argued. We were growing lonely and alienated in America.

It was true then, and most would say it is even worse now.

This Sunday, I’m going to share a passage that is challenging to me. It directs and encourages me as a pastor. It’s all about our life together.

I am praying it will help us understand the KIND of church Jesus wants us to be. If you lead or serve anyone at CrossPoint, I especially want you to be here. If you’re new to our church, this will tell you what we believe the Lord wants us to be and do.

Pastor Bruce Garner // ONE BIBLICAL TRUTH TO FOCUS YOUR WHOLE LIFE As a lifelong Christian and third generation minister, I’m allergic to hype. There’s just too much artificial buzz and promotion.

But years ago I saw something that the Bible clearly teaches, and it refocused our family’s life.

It has always been in the Bible, and it is very clear, but it is seldom taught.

I understand why, but it is WORTH the risk of teaching it. It is life changing.

The topic: heaven, and on what basis people will be rewarded there.

I’ve only taught this once since I’ve been at CrossPoint, and I am looking forward to engaging this again.

I hope you’ll join me Sunday at 9:00a, 10:30a, or 5:30p!

If your own faith is weak, or you have friends with questions about God, this is a great story for them to hear from God’s Word.

Pastor Bruce Garner // We will look to the God who made the world and all that is in it this weekend. I can’t imagine a more urgent topic. And there is HOPE and HEALING. If you have friends and family asking hard questions, INVITE them this weekend: Saturday at 5:30p, or Sunday morning at 9:00 or 10:30a!

Pastor Bruce Garner // This weekend I asked for your questions in the aftermath of the crimes committed in Las Vegas. Thank you for the response - I just finished sorting through a lot of important, difficult questions you asked. I’ll try to give you biblical answers in our next worship services. It’s a great time to bring your friends and family who may have questions of their own!

Pastor Bruce Garner // AMAZE JESUS?! HOW? It’s true. It happens, and you can do it. Join us this weekend on Saturday at 5:30p or Sunday mornings at 9:00 or 10:30a to find out how as we keep walking with Jesus in the gospel of Luke.

Pastor Bruce Garner // I spent fifteen minutes at Barnes and Noble looking through the self-improvement section. Interesting stuff - much of it useful. Plus two titles with serious swear words in the title. I’m a lifelong reader of the genre, but that was new!

That section will ALWAYS have great sales because we all want to become good people.

But how did JESUS say that happens? I wanted to tackle this question last weekend, and I am thrilled I will be able to now! Come worship with us as we begin to walk with Jesus again through the gospel of Luke. Read chapter 6 before you come, and bring a friend!

Missionary Laverne Rodgers // This weekend we return to the gospel of Luke and hear Jesus tackle a vital question: How can you tell what kind of person you are becoming? In an age filled with Christian pretenders, can you tell the difference between a genuine follower of Jesus and a fake? School’s back in - let’s all get back together and worship and grow together!

Pastor Bruce Garner // Suffering opens the door for both growth AND disaster. Last week, we focused on God’s provision for our anxieties. Now, we’ll talk about how to stay in the fight and WIN when you are suffering. Come worship Saturday at 5:30p or Sunday at 9:00a or 10:30a.

Pastor Bruce Garner // Anxiety is the curse of our age. What does the God who made us and loves us say about it? Is there hope?

I hope you’ll worship with us this weekend as we explore a passage of Scripture that has given me hope since I was a college kid. There is no one on earth who cannot benefit from what God promises!

We can endure almost anything if we know it’s going to end well.

This weekend, I want to tell you the end of THE story from the book of Revelation. I promise you’ll be encouraged, and you may even be surprised how issues in today’s headlines are addressed by this telling of “future history.”

We live in the age of fear. Our screens are filled with the news of hatred, crimes and threats. In our relationships, we live in dread of the opinion of others, and millions of people have grown accustomed to life with an ever present tension in the pit of their stomach.

This weekend, I’ll share a single, pithy proverb from the Bible that tells us how to live in a culture soaked in fear. If you live in fear, you can only survive, but never truly live. I hope you’ll join me and take a step toward the thriving life God intends.

He Restores My Soul 08.06.17 by CrossPointHB

This weekend, beginning with the 5:30p Saturday service, we will return to the vital idea of passing on our love for God to the next generation.

I will share the SINGLE most important factor in raising kids to love God. It's a lesson I was taught when my children were young, and so far, it has made all the difference.

View Details

Your response to last weekend’s message about the next generation has been very encouraging!

Some of you have followed up with questions and tried to share it with others. Unfortunately, we had technical problems and none of the recordings are useful. That has never happened, but it may be for the best!

I am heeding the advice of others and on the weekend of July 29th & 30th, I am going to recap that message, teach some other related Scripture, AND take some time to answer your questions.

As we continue our "Table Talk" series, we reach the "Child Chair" at the table in God's family.

Too many Christians will spend their life here!

Join me this weekend to understand what the Bible says about how people grow up spiritually. (Services are Saturday at 5:30p and Sunday at 9:00a and 10:30a.)

Nothing will bring more joy and significance than growing up to maturity in Jesus. If you have children to raise, the stakes are even higher!
