In a self-promoting culture, how can we know if a Christian worker is worth listening to?
The biggest misconception Christians may have about giving is that once you give it, it's gone. By God's grace, that's not true.

As Paul begins to conclude his second letter to the Corinthians, he will teach us about God, generosity, and loving one another.
Strangely, though he taught this at length to the Corinthian church, Paul’s timeless message is often either ignored or manipulated.
God has marked out the path for our children. If they follow it faithfully, all kinds of blessings await them. Our part is to help them get on the path and stay on it for life.
Doing what God called us to do is never easy. Work that outlasts us - that makes a difference in eternity - never is. If it were easy, as they say, anyone would do it. Several years ago we began a slow journey through the gospel of Luke. We will conclude that journey in the next few weeks, beginning with the resurrection of Jesus and His final instructions to His disciples. His words are as timely and life-giving as ever!
This Sunday we will conclude our series on the Prophets by listening to what are known as the Servant Songs in the book of Isaiah.
In seminary, I had a few "WOW" moments while listening to a lecture. On Sunday, I'd like to share one of them with you. We are continuing our very brief look at the Prophets, and the picture Isaiah paints in the first chapter of his message to Judah is one that we can carry in our hearts for life. The promise it makes is nothing the world has EVER offered, or ever could.
The prophetic writings in the Bible are enormous, but aside from a few key passages, the value of this part of the Bible seems distant to many of us. On Sunday, I’m going to show you how this part of the Bible works, and then we are going to dive into a prophecy from Isaiah to see God’s truth in action.
As we conclude our series "Conversations with Jesus," we come to one of the most important discussions Jesus ever had with His disciples. This conversation was initiated by Jesus. It was controversial then, and it's controversial now. In it, we will find not only guidance for life, but life itself. Personally, coming to grips with what Jesus said changed the entire direction of my life.
On Sunday I’ll open a short series looking at some of the most meaningful conversations Jesus had with people. Yes, conversations! Jesus told people things, but He also asked them questions. This weekend the conversation begins with one of the most audacious requests in human history. Now that we have concluded our series in 1 Peter, I want to stand with you on the shore and listen in on a conversation between Jesus and Peter. It took place after Peter denied ever knowing Jesus, and it is one of the most moving stories in the Bible. If you have ever failed Jesus (who hasn't!?) you will be both encouraged and become more faithful as His disciple if you take its lesson to heart. You can read it in John 21.
If you're going through a tough time, this passage is vitally important. It will give you hope and tell you very specifically what to do while you wait for God's blessing.

This week I was surprised to hear a longtime Christian say she had never been taught much about suffering. That is a gap we all need to fill!

Peter will tell us clearly HOW TO LIVE in these difficult days. Though the passage is familiar (I've preached it before) I was struck again with how countercultural Peter's inspired instructions are - even in many churches.

PETER WANTS TO TALK TO US ABOUT OUR ATTITUDE When I was a kid my Mom talked to me about my attitude all the time. Reading 1 Peter again this week made me remember that she was quite right to do so. In 1 Peter 4, the apostle talks to us very directly about our attitude. What he says is simple and so timely that it could have been taken from today's breaking news. I hope you'll take time again to read the whole epistle of 1 Peter before Sunday. Focus on the first paragraph of chapter 4 in particular. Know someone who's a bit discouraged about the state of the world? Bring them with you! And if YOU are discouraged, make sure you don't miss it!

Read 1 Peter straight through before Sunday if you can, and pay close attention to chapter 3. I've been pondering the passage for weeks, but what I come back to is the rock-solid comfort Peter conveyed to his readers. The details are puzzling; the MESSAGE is as clear as anything you will ever hear.

God's Word is treated differently even among people who say they are following Jesus. Some people use it as a source for quick inspirational quotes in the morning. Others, being more dutiful, do more serious reading, but don't seem to benefit much from it.
According to the apostle Peter, the Word of God has ALREADY given us new life, and what we do with the Word NOW makes a huge difference. God has provided all you need. You just need to do what He lovingly tells you.

Last Sunday we began a journey through 1 Peter, a letter from a pastor comforting scattered, suffering people. It could not be more timely in this strange age of loss, displacement, and unexpected troubles.
As he begins his letter, before Peter addresses present suffering, he gives us a view of future glory. It has been there all along, but I was so enthralled with what I found that I had to text some people about it even as I was writing the sermon!

Under pressure. Harassed. Mistreated. Have you felt that way recently?
Christians in times more difficult that our own received a pastoral letter from Peter, the once-impetuous disciple of Jesus. His purpose was to tell them how to bear up under their difficulties. And he has much to teach them. Peter himself has suffered, and learned, and changed.
What Peter said to scattered, outcast Christians nearly 2000 years ago is encouraging, comforting and timely for us.

THE INFANT CHAIR
We expect the blessings to continue on Sunday, when we look at the first chair at God’s family table. Jesus said that we must be born again, and when we are, we are infants in God’s family! We are fully alive, and the cause of the family’s joy! Babies bring a lot of joy to families.
They also give and need a lot of love. Whether you are just beginning as a Christian or you have followed Jesus for years, understanding the characteristics and needs of this first season of the Christian life will be a great help to you as you keep walking toward full spiritual maturity.

The basics of the doctrine of Scripture:
Scripture is authoritative – as Wayne Grudem states, “The authority of Scripture means that all the words in Scripture are God’s words in such a way that to disbelieve or disobey any word of Scripture is to disbelieve or disobey God.”
Scripture is inerrant – Scripture is without error and possess no contradiction. Everything that Scripture says is truth, since God never lies and is completely trustworthy.
Scripture is sufficient – Everything we need to live this life for the glory of God is found in Scripture.

On Sunday, we will continue our brief series on doctrine. The word "doctrine" makes some people nervous, and I can understand why.
Learning ABOUT God can be a dangerous thing if you think of God as a hard lesson to be learned.
We are told to LOVE God and to love Him, we must KNOW Him. So we are learning who God is and what He said! That is all doctrine is!
Benefits of learning biblical truth (doctrine): Greater love for God. There is no one greater you will ever meet or enjoy more. Learning to study His Word more effectively. To know Him, you need to hear from Him. More ability to explain and defend your faith in God. Someone so great deserves to be introduced!
If you will humbly work to hear God's Word and love Him, it will change your life. I look forward to continuing the journey with you.

"Isn't everybody just guessing when talking about God?"
It's a fair question.
Beginning this Sunday in our worship gatherings and small groups, we begin a journey into the basics of what the Bible teaches. This is often called "doctrine" or "theology." But don't let the terms scare or bore you - the Bible is filled with God's truth, and our study is just a simple way to organize and learn it.
Some people worry that if they dive into doctrine, they may become a bit odd. (Or stuck up!) But no need to worry. You just have to study God's Word with the right attitude and for the right reason. As I will show you on Sunday, knowing God is the very BEST thing that can happen to you. We will keep it simple and relational. With God's help, we will become more like the people He wants us to be!

THE LORD'S SUPPER IS RICH IN MEANING We've been following Jesus through the gospel of Luke for a long time. THE RETURN OF THE LORD Back in March when the lockdown began, I quickly changed my preaching calendar in an effort to offer guidance and comfort from the Bible to our hurting families and congregation.
The passage I was scheduled to preach back then is Luke 17:20-37. Take time to read it now, and you may see why I changed the plan and why it is so timely now.
There is too much bad news today to mention in a single email. To make matters worse, there is so much misinformation circulating that many people have not heard the news; if they have, they may not believe it!
In all quarters, there is a heartbroken cry for justice. Even so, many people calling for justice disagree deeply on what justice means, who should have it, and who deserves it.
In light of all this, the sober warning from Jesus in Luke 17 should serve as a word of comfort and a call to action to us. I hope you'll join us at 9:00 or 10:30a.

Sunday, we will hear from David again in Psalm 56. After an experience that probably made him sick with fear, he wrote a song about what he learned.

I quoted that first way back in March, on what turned out to be the last ordinary Sunday we had before the pandemic changed everything.
I have gone to that verse again and again since then, and I have also heard many Christians quote it. I’ve also seen a few people misuse it online.

COURAGE You'd probably have to be a seminary graduate to miss such an obvious idea, but it recently struck me that the many people in Scripture who were told to not be afraid and to be courageous instead must have been quite fearful. They were obviously about to act like cowards or it would not have been mentioned!
Beginning this Sunday, I'd like to explore some of the stories of the courageous people in Scripture. We can learn how to be courageous from their example. Fearful days call for courageous Christians, so let's learn together!

It's timely: the apostle Peter wrote to suffering Christians and told them HOW to go through suffering.
We can't choose WHAT we go through; we have the God-given ability to choose HOW we go through it. I encourage you to read the entire epistle of 1 Peter and dwell on 1 Peter 5:6-11.

This Sunday, we will open one of the little jewels of the Old Testament - the book of Habakkuk. Habakkuk wrote some 600 years before the birth of Jesus. He was troubled by the wickedness of his nation and asked God about it. He was not expecting the answer: God would judge His people through the mighty army and empire of Babylon.
As you can imagine, that caused Habakkuk even MORE distress. But then, he understood, and he prayed.
Before Sunday, READ the WHOLE book. It is short and it could not be more timely for people living under the cloud of WHAT IF?

The last few days have been filled with fear.
Be encouraged, "Do not be afraid" is one of the most repeated commandments in the Bible.
Sunday, we will worship together as usual. The last story in Luke 16:19-31 focuses our attention on ETERNITY.
The fragility of our health, the world economy and our emotions all remind us of one thing: there is no life and no safety apart from God. This is a GREAT time to turn to Him and tell others about the salvation we can enjoy in Christ.

But as we will be reminded Sunday, all around the birth of Jesus, there are things that are not quite right.
But they will be made right because God is at work.

Almost everyone I talk to is pressured and scrambling to “find the time” or “make the time” to “do what they need to do.” Yes, we say funny things when we talk about our precious time. (After all, who can really make it or find it?)

HE'S DOWN! SHOULD WE SHOOT HIM?!? There’s an old cliche that the only army that shoots its wounded is the Christian church. Like many cliches, it has some truth in it. Too many Christians have discovered that they fell into sin and no one came to help. I’ve heard too many stories of people who were wounded and abandoned.
Is that the best we can do? NO.
Sunday, I want to share a passage from Scripture that tells us what sort of congregation we should be, and how we should treat one another as we follow Jesus together. I hope you’ll join me, and if you have a friend who has been wounded by church, ask them to come with you. Actually doing what God says always brings wholeness.

This Sunday, I have the honor of preaching Matthew 19-16-26 to you, helping Pastor Bruce finish his series on some fundamentals on the Christian faith. The topic will be Obey, and I think it can be a difficult one to get right as we try to apply it. On the one hand, we can recoil from the idea of God requiring our obedience; on the other, we can overestimate the contribution that obedience makes to our salvation. We will dig into Scripture to learn to fall in the gap between those two and give Jesus control of our hearts and actions!

That is the promise, and that is the reality of the birth of Jesus.

Thankfully, it all worked out for him eventually. Not everyone is so fortunate.
This Sunday, I want to tell you what Jesus said when someone tried to get Him involved in a family fight over money. The combatants had the same trouble the Grinch was having, it seems. Before it was over, Jesus laid down a big warning and an eternal incentive for all of us. I can’t wait to share it with you!

This weekend, beginning with the 5:30p Saturday service, we will return to the vital idea of passing on our love for God to the next generation.
I will share the SINGLE most important factor in raising kids to love God. It's a lesson I was taught when my children were young, and so far, it has made all the difference.
