'Nurse Jackie' - 'When the Saints Go']
In the latest 'Nurse Jackie,' Gracie was obsessed with the devil, like a little 'Church Lady,' while Akilitus was down in the dumps over her statuary being carted out of All Saints hospital. For Jackie, there was also just one thing on her mind ... and it wasn't Satan or the saints.
Jackie remained a step ahead of Kevin, covering her online search for oxy with a faked history that made him think she was working the program like a good little member of Na. Jackie is the kind of character who's always a couple of moves ahead of everyone else.

I've been down on Nurse Jackie for most of the season - and "When the Saints Go" didn't exactly feel me with hope that the show is going anywhere - which likely makes these reviews disheartening for fans of the series to read.
So allow me to focus on the positives from the latest episode instead for a change:

Peter Facinelli is hilarious. He cracks me up as Coop, even if his scenes just feel like filler until the story can shift back to Jackie. She took his crutch away out of love, right? Great stuff.
Zoey and Lenny 4 Eva! The former might finally be giving in to the latter's charm and loyalty. Loved the little smirk on her face, the one she just couldn't hold back, when Lenny quickly disposed of that female patient's number.
Vulnerability from Jackie. She's getting almost difficult to like these days, isn't she? So»

Peter Facinelli sounded a little exhausted when EW chatted with him on the phone last week — as he well should be. The actor has been flying to and from the set of Breaking Dawn in Vancouver, where the cast is filming “second unit” scenes (like stunts). What gives him an energy boost? Talking about what’s next for Coop on Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, following a big, life-changing moment for the doc on tonight’s episode. He explains (Spoilers ahead)

Entertainment Weekly: So I hear something big is coming up for Coop this week. What can you tell us? PETER FACINELLI: A bomb gets exploded in Coop’s life. He finds out that his two moms — who are basically his whole world — are getting a divorce. He gets blindsided by it, because he doesn’t see it coming at all. You know, Coop doesn’t take it well, and it spirals into a depression. It’s kind of sad for me to play that because Coop’s so energetic and hyper all the time. To have to play him in a funk it kind of sad.- Sandra GonzalezSee full article at Zap2It - From Inside the Box »

So here's my question: does someone like Bill, the drug dealer who claims to help clients by ensuring they hit rock bottom, actually exist in the real world? If so, I'll consider Jackie's reaching out to him on "Rat Falls" an interesting development. If not, such a character is a rather lame plot device that signals what desperate shapeNurse Jackie is in as it tries to mix things up.Even with Jackie scoring a new stash with Bill, though, the episode lacked any progress or cliffhanger. Bill claims people go to him when rehab and other attempts at getting clean fail. But Jackie has no interest in getting clean. She just needs more pills. Bill may act strange and his profession may be shady, but the show hasn't given me any reason to believe he'll play any kind of role in Jackie's future aside from someone who feeds her habitSee full article at TVfanatic »

As Dr. Fitch Cooper on Showtime's "Nurse Jackie," Peter Facinelli does not have an easy road.Despite his character's best efforts, he remains an outsider at All Saints' Hospital -- most recently thanks to his indiscretion with co-worker Sam's (Arjun Gupta) girlfriend and the resulting broken nose he's forced to wear like a scarlet letter. So in the interest of kicking a man while he's down, the April 25 episode breaks the unsettling news that Coop's two mothers are getting a divorce. Bad news for him, but good news for everyone else, as they're played by guest actresses Swoosie Kurtz and Judith Light."He's been kind of knocked off of his horse... he's at a low point in his life," Facinelli tells Zap2it. "For him, the arc this season is that he needs to grow up a little bit. So in pure Coop fashion, he decides to grow up in all the wrong ways

Is it bad that I was hoping Kevin actually had left his family this week, as Nurse Jackie briefly teased?I don't want Grace and Fiona to be without their father, but at least such a major development would have made "Mittens" remotely relevant. Instead, we were treated to another episode that just felt like the show spinning its drug-addicted wheels.Ever since we met Jackie Peyton, she's hidden a drug habit from those around her. And if you stop to think about it, has anything really changed since the series premiere? It appeared as though Kevin and O'Hara's intervention would be a significant step to conclude season two, but any trace of suspense regarding Jackie and her relationship with her husband and her Bff has pretty much disappeared.Jackie and O'Hara are officially fine again now; and Kevin may have a few suspicions, and he may be taking advantage »See full article at TVfanatic »

Nurse Jackie star Stephen Wallem and his boyfriend have been together for a couple of years now, so is it any surprise that they want to get married? No, but... Wallem and actor and theater professor Tony Humrichouser live in New York City. Gay marriage still isn't legal in the Empire State. "I imagine we'll be in New York for as long as I could imagine, so I think the second it becomes legal, we will," Wallem, who plays Thor on the hit Showtime series, told me earlier this week at the GLAAD Media Awards. "It's ridiculous that it hasn't, but slowly yet surely it's happening. It's about time." Wallem and Humrichouser, just celebrated their two-year »

Jackie Peyton seemingly had avoided the collateral damage that could have resulted from last season’s forced intervention by Kevin and Dr. O’Hara. Though she had a fight with her husband over responsibility and her best friend is too exasperated to speak with her, she still has her job, her kids, and her relationship with co-worker Eddie, so all is not lost in the world of Nurse Jackie.Which is why the presence of Kev’s sister Tunie, previously unseen and[...]

You know you’ve hit rock bottom when you start hiding drugs in the laundry or raiding a group of nuns for your lost stash. Nurse Jackie sunk to a different kind of low in “Mitten.” Once again, she’s hidden drugs in a place where it could have been easily accessible to her children. This time the drugs were mixed up in a good will box with her daughter’s baptismal clothes. You can’t really call it an “all-new” low. After all, Jackie Peyton’s (Edie Falco) slapped food out of her child’s hand because it had drugs in it; she’s also kept a secret romance at work and a secret husband at home. It’s good to see Jackie and O’Hara (Eve Best) playing nice again. The fiery-eyed beef between the two was great to see for a few episodes, but the humor wins »

As played by Jaimie Alexander, the debut of Kevin's sister on "Play Me" came across like a breath of fresh, entertaining, care-free air. Everyone immediately surrounding Edie Falco's title character is just so serious these days - Eddie, O'Hara, Kevin - that it was fun to see someone refer to interventions as "rude."
I'm getting the most enjoyment on season three overall from everyone not named Jackie. It's just too much of the same with her: lying, denying, using. Are there people like this in real life? Absolutely. But that doesn't mean it's a hoot to watch.
Fortunately, Coop and Zoey are a source of non-stop laughter.
Granted, their scenes feel unrelated anything else on the show these days, coming across like a blatant humor break from the seriousness of Jackie's situation. But who cares? I still find them funny.
Who didn't crack up.

Kevin's hot sister is pretty annoying but we'll see how that goes. She'll be staying with the Peytons for a few weeks, so I guess most of this season? She's a trainwreck, and possibly will be dating Eddie. Nothing else of note is really happening with home life this week.

What is going on, though, is: Everything is super weird. If this were the new tone of the show I think that would be a great move, because this episode managed to be both funnier and more acidic than usual, while still maintaining a sort of grace that generally doesn't happen on this show. And lots and lots of weirdness. Like, God steals a piano off the street and hauls it into All Saints so that he can counsel Zoey about her Lenny love life... While playing the piano. That kind of thing. Sort of a Northern Exposure cuteness to everything. Akalitus getting into it with this priest who is going to be removing all the statues from the chapel, because it turns out the chapel hasn't been consecrated since the '70s, which seems like a major thematic move for this show, is treated about equally lightly as the guy with a shishkebab skewer through his face, or Thor taking over Coop's fantasy football team.

One of the more enjoyable episodes, I would say, of the series. Which is funny because there weren't really any jokes or anything, just this pervading sense of lightness in a show usually quite happy to simmer in its own filth. And what's weirdest is that it was written by Linda Wallem, who is one of the creators of the show, so the intent behind all this is even stranger and harder to pin down. Here's hoping some of this magic sticks around.

Doctors talk about recent scenarios involving addiction, a curious kid and a book-crushing victim.Marc SiegelThe Unreal World
April 11, 2011The premise

Nurse Jackie Peyton (Edie Falco) is having trouble managing her growing addiction to painkillers. Nevertheless, she continues to snort an opiate in the supply room and pop pills in the bathroom during shifts at the hospital. Jackie works in the busy emergency room, where she helps take care of a boy who wedged a dentalmirror up his nose because he was trying to see his brain. Later, another young man is brought in after being found crushed under 2 tons of books (he and his father were part of a moving team that were clearing a library that was closing). By the time his father discovered him, his son was going into shock, with toxins being released into his bloodstream. In the hospital he goes into kidney failure, respiratory failure and then cardiac arrest. He cannot be saved. The father grieves and blames himself.
The medical questionsDo addictions to painkillers worsen with time, requiring larger doses and different kinds of medications? What are the potential complications from an object wedged into the nasal passage? How does being trapped under a heavy pile of books lead to organ failure and death?
The reality

Addictions to opioid painkillers, such as morphine and Percocet (Jackie's main drug), do get worse over time, says Jim Adams, associate professor of pharmacology at USC. As the addict builds up tolerance, he or she must take larger doses to get the same euphoria, or "brain reward," a process involving the neurotransmitter dopamine. The brain's own opioids — endorphins and enkephalins — shut down, making the addict more dependent on a drug-delivered "fix." Addicts frequently combine their opioids with other drugs and with alcohol, says Dr. Ben Honigman, chair of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora.

Foreign objects wedged in the nose can cause significant bleeding, infections, pain and possibly penetrate the maxillary sinus, Honigman says. If the hard object goes far enough, it can pass through the base of the skull and into the lower brain compartments, producing neurological deficits. Young children commonly stick beads, beans, erasers, even batteries up their noses and then are embarrassed to tell their parents, adds Dr. MarkMorocco, assistant professor of emergency medicine at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. The leak of caustic chemicals from batteries can cause significant inflammation.

People who are trapped under something very heavy for more than a few minutes can become victims of "crush syndrome," in which muscle cells are squeezed hard enough to cut off their blood supply, Morocco says. Muscle enzymes, electrolytes and acid are released into the blood, leading to kidney failure, heart arrhythmias and possibly death. The direct pressure of the books may also damage the heart and lungs and lead to significant bleeding, Honigman adds. Aggressive treatment with intravenous fluids and dialysis in an intensive care unit may sometimes save these gravely ill patients.

Siegel is an associate professor of medicine and medical director of Doctor Radio at New York UniversityLangone Medical Center.Full article at http://www.wsbt.com/health/la-he-unreal-nurse-jackie-20110411,0,4829002.column

Up fourth and final is Eve Best, who plays British doctor and Jackie's best friend Eleanor O'Hara, whose droll humor and disdain for stupidity is matched only by her respect and affection for Jackie herself. How does Nurse Jackie get back into the business of popping pills? Eve Best - There’s a lot of burring that goes on. It’s very good that it’s quite like real life that it’s not the Disney World version where everyone has a huge fight, and says exactly what they think of one another. And actually it doesn’t happen at all and, like Dominic said, it goes back to business. With a lot of extracurricular subtext going on and it’s good to really have this happen. Never have that confrontation, and everything gets buried as everyone walks around with this huge Kryptonite on their chest, as everyone does.

After riding high in the ratings for its first two seasons, Showtime’s black medical comedy came back down to earth with this week’s Season 3 premiere, down sharply from last year’s equivalent show.
Jackie scored a mere 0.2 18-49 share and 611,000 total viewers – whereas last year the show managed a 0.6 youth rating. So what happened? Did Showtime not promote the series enough? Were viewers frustrated by the season 2 cliff-hanger? My theory – Jackie’s double life has gone on a tad too long now and its time for husband Kevin to find out about Jackie’s affair with Eddie… Let the fireworks begin!

The latest episode of Nurse Jackie played right into my biggest pet peeve when it comes to medical shows: cases that directly reflect what a character is going through.
This was one of the main reasons why I stopped watching Grey's Anatomy, as it's just lazy to have a patient with a unique ailment come in and - what do you know?!? - his/her disease/struggle/diagnosis just happens to be a perfect complement to whatever life issue is affecting the professional treating him. It's even a bit insulting. On "Enough Rope," for example, did we really need Jackie to go off about the Dnr dude and how some people just want to be left alone? Hey... wait! That's just how Jackie feels about Kevin and O'Hara butting into her life. Amazing!

Sarcasm aside, I was left with a similar feeling here as I had after the third season premiere.

['Nurse Jackie' - 'Game On']The Season 3 premiere of 'Nurse Jackie' opened on the other side of Kevin and O'Hara's poorly planned intervention, with Jackie locked in her personal drug haven: A bathroom.
Staring into the family medicine cabinet mirror, her mind racing, she began a frantic search for pills, and then proof that the charges on her secret credit card bill weren't for drugs, but toiletries.Who told you you're allowed to rain on Jackie Peyton's parade? The Barbra Streisand tune perfectly matched our heroine's mounting adrenaline and agitation.
While the rest of the episode didn't live up to such a satisfying opening scene (or the wry punch of the last one), the writers and director Steve Buscemi gave us plenty of bright spots.

The executive producer of Nurse Jackie has suggested that Jackie doesn't have a "rock bottom". Speaking to E! Online, Liz Brixius joked that Jackie has already risked so much because of her addiction to prescription drugs. "Jackie doesn't have a rock bottom," she said. "I can't figure out what it is yet. "She has risked her marriage, she has risked custody of her kids, what will stop her? I don't know. I don't know what could possibly stop her. Something would, but those things are always very mysterious." Brixius, who (more)

What a clusterfudge, indeed.Showtime's She-House kicked off its third season, and things are just not looking good for Nurse Jackie...the person. Which is great for Nurse Jackie, the show.
Picking up seconds after last season's finale, Jackie was in full spin mode to throw her hubby and best gal pal O'Hara off the scent of her pill-popping, narcotic-snorting ways. But for all the fibs she fed them (convincingly, natch), there was no stopping one major truth from coming out after her husband, Kevin, still miffed about Jackie's financial fumblings, paid a visit to All Saints hospital.

Slight Spoilers The new season of Showtime's noir dramedy "Nurse Jackie" doesn't get sappy and maudlin on us, thankfully. We left off at a stage intervention with O'Hara (Eve Best) and her husband (Dominic Fumusa) where Jackie refuses to admit her problem. Like many functioning addicts, as she hasn't truly bottomed out yet, and is "A-okay" in her mind. The season is head and shoulders better than the last one for me, and without spoilers, the staged intervention - if it had somehow worked - would have killed the realistic day in the life twists and turns of AllSaints' Hospital in New York City that drew me to the series in the first place. hollywoodnews.com: “The truth is finally catching up,” goes the tagline in the season three trailer for “Nurse Jackie”. The critically acclaimed Showtime series will resume on Monday after months on hiatus, to resolve the season two cliffhanger, which hinted at an intervention.Says Jackie’s secret ex-lover, Eddie in the season three trailer, “Anyone who knows you knows they don’t know you.” The conclusion of season two found Jackie’s inner circle (husband Kevin and best friend Dr. O’Hara) finally piecing together that Jackie’s suspicious behavior may be related to an addiction. As if the addiction alone were not enough, pharmacist-slash-dealer-slash-jealous-ex-slash-scary-stalker Eddie continues to maintain a deceptive relationship with Kevin, further complicating Jackie’s life. Yet, season three may not be all drama—alongside heightening angst surrounding Jackie, viewers can also expect the comic relief supplied by mainstays nurse Zoey, administrator Gloria, and Dr. »- Kim PalaciosSee full article at Hollywoodnews.com

Nothing ever really happens on Nurse Jackie. The show's second season ended with drug-addicted Jackie's husband and best friend staging an intervention, offering hope that the show might actually move the story forward. Season 3 (premiering Monday, March 28 at 10pm on Showtime) destroys that hope and puts everything back to where it was before.Jackie's entire life is built on lies, whether it's about her drug use, her affair with Eddie or the fact that her co-workers don't even know she's married. When the show dares to try and expose one of these lies, another one just pops up in its place. »- editor@buddytv.com

Popular Showtime shows, Nurse Jackie and Californication, are set to be dropped from Netflix streaming as part of new deal. Instead, these shows will only be available via the Showtime Anytime broadband service and will only be available to Showtime customers. According to The Wrap, the length of new deal is not known and starts this summer. Netflix's spokesperson simply stated the deal was "ongoing" and declined further comment. Series that have completed, such as The Tudors or Brotherhood, will continue to be streamed to Netflix subscribers. Showtime's Anytime broadband is a prime example of the threat that streaming poses to paid TV channels. Cable providers should feel threatened, many customers (myself included) have dropped their premium channels. It only made sense to me because Netflix has greatly expanded its online offerings thanks to deals with Starz and Epix. The days of Showtime and HBO dominating the cable world are over.

Picking up right where she left off, Jackie takes the contents of the medicine cabinet, throws it in a laundry bag and dumps it at Kevin’s feet. Akalitus announces that nearby hospitals have closed down and that the staff should remain on their toes. A hungover Sam is now totally beholden to Jackie and Thor for their help. Post intervention, things are tense with O’Hara and Jackie, and O’Hara goes to Akalitus hoping to avoid working with Jackie. | | | Eddie Falco as Jackie Peyton |

When Speakeasy recently interviewed Edie Falco, we were curious to know if the actress agrees with those who say that television has entered a new golden age. If that’s true, one could argue that Falco, who won Emmys for her roles on “The Sopranos” and “Nurse Jackie,” has aided the rise of cable dramas. “I tend not to think in overviews like that. I just don’t have a brain that works like that. But I suppose so,” Falco said. “There are so many shows with women as the lead characters. And though they are all stunningly beautiful, they are not beautiful in the way that television stars needed to be back in the day. That’s fantastic to me.”Is film work less appealing to Falco than it once was, given the outstanding writing on cable shows? “I don’t think about the genre so much,” she said. “I have to keep bringing it back to the story. What is the story and who am I playing in it? If that was happening in film right now, that’s where I’d be. If it’s happening in television, which it seems to be, that’s where I’ll be.” Falco did admit that the opportunity to play a character over a long period is an “added attraction” of television work. “There’s something magical and captivating about that for me,” she said. “It seems like a huge luxury to get to be so many dimensions of these characters.”
