Episode 140 of the Adorned Podcast is a bittersweet one as we announce the end of this season in our lives. On our final episode we discuss what led to this decision and reflect on all that The Lord has done in the past 3 1/2 years through this podcast and Adorned Ministries.

On episode 139 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss 1 Peter 5:14. In this last part of his letter, Peter is instructing leaders of the church in what it looks like to live faithfully for Christ. He ends by doing exactly what he has done throughout the whole letter. He is reminding the believer who they are and what they are called to. On episode 128 of the Adorned Podcast, we discuss how God makes all things new and the book of Revelation. The Bible concludes with a vision God gives to John about the second coming of Jesus and the new creation. God shows John many things about what is going to happen in the future. He shows him that there is coming judgement for those who do not follow Jesus and coming new creation for those who do. He urges believers to stay strong. And ultimately he reminds all of us that death will be defeated once and for all and that in this new creation there will be no more sadness, no more sorrow, and no more sin. Until then we are left in the already and the not yet but longing for God’s promise of making all things new. This is a good story. This is God’s story.

On episode 127 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss how God shows us the way through Acts and the Epistles. The book of Acts begins with the ascension of Jesus. He tells the people that “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Just as Jesus had promised, the Holy Spirit comes at Pentecost. More and more people begin to put their faith in The Lord and this is the beginning of the church! Saul aka Paul, a persecutor of Christians is converted when he encounters Jesus on the road to Damascus. Paul falls in love with Jesus and spends his life spreading the good news of the Gospel. During his multiple missionary journeys, Paul plants churches and writes the letters (or epistles) that now comprise a big portion of the New Testament. In his letters Paul is instructing the Church on basic doctrine, reminding them of the Gospel, and what it looks like to live for Christ. The New Testament also consists of other epistles such as those written by Jesus’s disciples, Peter, James, and John.

On episode 126 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss when God comes to dwell with his people through His son, Jesus. After 400 long years of silence and waiting, we pick up in the Gospels with the arrival of the Messiah. Born of a virgin, in the most humble way. Everything the Old Testament was building towards is finally here. As a tiny baby God enters into his creation to dwell with his people again. He comes to seek and save the lost and to redeem His people. He does this by living a perfect life, dying in our place, paying the debt of our sins so that we can be reconciled back to our holy and righteous Creator. This is the pinnacle of the story, because remember, this is God’s redemptive story and this is how God redeems us.

On episode 125 of the Adorned Podcast our friend and special guest, Courtney Reissig joins in our conversation on the story of scripture to discuss the Wisdom Literature. In the middle of the Old Testament are the books of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon. These books, written by people such as David and Solomon have been labeled as “wisdom literature” and are included in the story of scripture to remind us that God not only cares about our minds and our actions, but our hearts as well. They help us understand that the people in God’s story are very similar to us in the way they feel and express their emotions while going through the ups and downs of life. Wisdom literature gives us language to use in times of joy, sorrow, weariness, thanksgiving, and more. These books, much like the rest of Scripture, help us to reflect on the faithfulness of God in the past, present, and future!

On episode 124 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss the kings and prophets and how God proclaims that a true and everlasting king is coming. The book of Ruth ends with showing us the next 3 generations: Obed, Jesse and David, but we pick up in 1 Samuel with Eli who trains up Samuel as a judge. As Samuel ages, the Israelites demand a king so they can be like “all the nations.” God tells Samuel to give them a king, but to warn them. God shows Samuel that Saul is to be the first king. Even though he was chosen by God, Saul is not a faithful leader. He becomes proud and disobedient, therefore God rejects him as king. When God chooses David, the son of Jesse to be the next king God reminds his people that it’s not outward appearance, but the heart that matters to Him. David trusts the Lord and defeats Goliath, but Saul is envious of David and tries to kill him (this is when many of the psalms are written). God makes a covenant with David and he is a good king, but also often chooses his own ways and sins. His son Solomon, is also a good king and even builds the temple, but he also chooses his own ways. These kings show us that we need a true and better king. During the reign of these as well as future kings, God sends prophets such as Isaiah and Jeremiah to remind the people to turn from their sin and trust that a true and better king is coming. God is faithful and will keep his promises!

On episode 123 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss the Books of Judges and Ruth; how God is faithful even when His people are not. After Joshua’s death, the people of Israel turn from The Lord and begin to worship idols. During this time God raises up judges to govern over the land and to deliver Israel from its enemies. Some of these judges, such as Deborah and Gideon are great leaders, while others are not. During this time, there is a cycle of God blessing his people, the prosperity of God’s people, the rebellion of God’s people, God’s wrath against his people, the repentance of God’s people, God offering his people forgiveness, and God blessing his people once again. The book of Ruth zooms in on one specific family living during the time of the judges, Naomi and her daughter in law, Ruth. When Boaz agrees to marry Ruth and redeem her family, the author (through the empowering of the Holy Spirit) is pointing us to our true redeemer, Jesus Christ!

On episode 122 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss when God calls a nation. After almost 400 years in Egypt and terrible slavery, Moses is born! Because of a horrible decree he was supposed to be killed, but God’s sovereignty is a beautiful thing. He is placed in a basket in the Nile River and the princess finds him. When Moses grows up, God calls him to be the one to lead the Exodus of God’s people out of slavery and to the promised land. Moses doesn’t think he can do it, but God sends plagues and leads his people out of Egypt and across the Red Sea… on dry land. After the exodus, God gives Moses the law and 10 commandments which point to the gospel by showing our need for a savior and that we are saved by grace not works! God’s people (Israel) flip back and forth between choosing to trust God and choosing their own ways. Ultimately they have to wander in the wilderness for 40 years. During this time, God continues to provide for them. Moses raises up a leader named Joshua. Joshua leads God’s people at the battle of Jericho.

On episode 121 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss when a shift happens in the story of Scripture and we zoom in on one man and his family. Abram. When God calls Abram to leave his home to go to a land that he would show him... he does! God makes a covenant with Abraham and he is obedient a lot but there are also times when he chooses his own ways instead of God’s. We see this when Abraham has a son named Ishmael with his wife’s servant, Hagar. Later, God graciously gives him and his wife, Sarah a son named Isaac. God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice Isaac. He is obedient, but God ultimately provides a ram for the sacrifice in Isaac’s place. Isaac marries Rebekah and they have twins named Jacob and Esau. Jacob means deceiver and he lives up to his name. One night, Jacob wrestles with God and his name is changed to Israel. Jacob has 12 sons (which are the 12 tribes of Israel), his favorite of which is Joseph. After Joseph’s brothers sell him into slavery, he has a lot of ups and downs in his life, but God gives him the gift of interpreting dreams and pharaoh makes him second in command over Egypt. Joseph’s brothers come to him asking for food because of famine in the land (they don’t know it’s Joseph) and he forgives them and takes care of them. The Israelites lived in Egypt and became slaves to the Egyptians.

On episode 120 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss when God’s people rebel. Satan, in the form of a serpent, twists God’s words and makes Eve doubt God’s goodness. Eve sees the fruit, desires it, and eats it. She chooses her own way instead of God’s way. (This is going to be a theme we see throughout this story) Adam then joins in this sin with Eve.Adam and Eve choose to rival God instead of choosing to be his representatives. Once they sin we immediately see the faithfulness, mercy, and holiness of God. God meets them in their shame and provides the covering for their shame (mercy and faithfulness), but they then have to leave the garden (holiness). God puts a curse on the serpent and we see the first glimpse of the gospel when God says “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Adam and Eve have children and the pattern of sin continues. Adam and Eve’s son, Cain kills his brother Abel. People continue to sin more and more until God is so heartbroken (Is that fair?) That he floods the earth, sparing Noah, his family and a ton of animals. Even after the flood, sin continues to wreak havoc and people continue to choose their ways instead of God’s. They decide to try and make a name for themselves by building the tower of Babel.

On episode 119 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss how God’s story begins even before creation. God existed in trinity, God the father, God the son, and God the Holy Spirit. In perfect glory, love, and community. Out of an overflow of this love and glory the triune God creates the world and everything in it and says it is good. God creates ex nihilo, meaning out of nothing. The pinnacle of creation is mankind. God first forms Adam from the dust and breathes life into him. He says it is not good for man to be alone so he creates Eve, a helper for man, out of Adam’s rib. God creates mankind (both Adam and Eve) in the imago dei, meaning in his image. God gives Adam and Eve the job of being his representatives and tells them to “be fruitful and multiply and have dominion over the earth.” There is harmony, community, and love as God dwells with His people in the garden. He provides more than Adam and Eve could ever need and only forbids them from eating the fruit from one tree.

For Advent in 2019 we walked through the metanarrative of scripture; creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. We don’t often think of the end times when we are celebrating Christmas, but the return of Jesus and the restoration of all creation is an important part of the work of Christ. In His teaching, Jesus answers the question “what is a good life or what is human flourishing?” On episode 75 we cover the first part of chapter 5, which is known as the “beatitudes.” The beatitudes are not a band, as Erin once believed, but they are short statements that start with “blessed” and they summarize the essence of The Sermon on the Mount. This week on the Adorned Podcast we take a look at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry in Matthew 4:12-25. We know that Jesus didn’t need the disciples’ help, but in His kindness He invited them in. The Bible tells us that the disciples didn’t hesitate to follow Jesus, they just dropped their fishing nets and went “immediately.” Immediate obedience is hard, but it is a theme that we have already seen so much in the first 4 chapters of Matthew. On episode 71 of the Adorned Podcast we dive into chapters 1 and 2 of Matthew. The book begins with the genealogy of Jesus and we immediately notice that Matthew is reassuring the Jews that Jesus is indeed their promised Messiah. Matthew then goes on to recount the story of Jesus’ birth and the events surrounding the first few years of His life. Throughout these first 2 chapters we continually see God’s sovereignty in the big miracles, the small details, and even through what Herod meant for evil. The beginning of this book is such a good reminder that we can rest in the fact that God is in total and complete control!

On episode 53 we wrap up the book of Genesis with a discussion on chapters 42-50. What a beautiful picture of reconciliation is seen when Joseph reveals his true identity to his brothers and tells them not to worry because what they meant for evil, God meant for good. Joseph is also reunited with his father, Jacob. What an incredible moment that must have been for both of them! It’s easy to wonder why Joseph was continually at peace when his circumstances were less than ideal. How was he able to offer forgiveness to his brothers who caused him so much pain? These things were true of Joseph because of his solid theology. Because he was grounded in who God is, Joseph was able to fully rest and trust in the sovereignty of God.

This week we dive into the last big story in Genesis. Most of us are familiar with the story of Joseph, but we want to encourage you to approach it with a fresh perspective and in light of everything we have learned leading up to this point. Joseph is sold by his brothers and even thrown into prison, but the story doesn’t end there. God has big plans for him! As we look at Joseph’s life we want to focus once again what this story teaches us about God. We see that God is good. God is sovereign. God promised to be with Joseph and as His children He promises to be with us as well!

On this week’s episode of the Adorned Podcast we continue to look at Jacob’s life as we discuss chapters 32-36 of Genesis. A big shift is seen in Jacob’s life as he focuses more on who God is. God changes Jacob’s name to Israel after spending a whole night wrestling with him. This is such a good a reminder to rest in the truth that God is the one that determines our identity. In the following chapters we see a beautiful picture of reconciliation through Jacob and Esau’s restored relationship. We are also reminded of man’s depravity in the story of Dinah, but as we have discussed before, we continue to see God’s plan at work despite their sin. We would love for you to listen in and we pray that this conversation is encouraging to you as you pursue a deeper understanding of God’s Word.

On this week’s episode we cover Genesis chapters 28-31. As we zoom in on Jacob’s life one of the first things we see is that God promises to be with him. This promise is also true for us today and can bring us so much peace and comfort. Jacob married Leah and Rachel (yes, both of them) and has 12 children between his wives and 2 maidservants. Even through this seemingly messy story, we are reminded that God is sovereign. He is fulfilling His plan to bring a Savior to the world through Jacob’s lineage. God continually provides for Jacob despite his sometimes wavering faith and sinfulness. What great hope that brings to us today!

For this week’s episode we invited our friend, Hannah Kalk onto the show to help us walk through Genesis 22-27. These chapters cover most of Isaac’s life. We start by discussing the tough story of how God asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. Through this passage we learn that God is really looking at Abraham’s heart and wants him to be willing to be willing to do what He asks of him. We believe that He wants the very same of us today. Through the obedience of a prayerful servant of Abraham’s, Isaac meets and marries Rebekah who gives birth to twin sons that seemed to be at odds even from the womb. Join us as we discuss what we can learn about God from taking a closer look at Isaac’s life.

On this week’s episode we walk through the second part of chapter 18 to chapter 21 of Genesis. We are very honest from this beginning of this episode that these are some tough passages to cover. However, like we’ve said before, we believe that the whole Bible is important and that includes the hard parts and all! In these chapters we continue to see the character of God through his faithfulness, mercy, justice, and patience. For the first time we see the idea of substitutionary atonement when God is willing to allow the righteous to save the unrighteous in Sodom, although no righteous were found and the city was destroyed. In chapter 21 God fulfills his promise of a son to Abraham and Sarah with the birth of Isaac. Sarah’s joyful laughter following his birth reminds us that our true joy can only be found in The Lord!

In this week’s episode we discuss chapters 16 to the first part of 18 in the book of Genesis. We see such a clear picture of the depravity of humanity when Sarai tries to take matters of fulfilling God’s promise into her own hands. She tells Abram to conceive a child with her servant, Hagar, and when he does we clearly see the pain that comes along with the consequences of sin. We look at how God is a God that both sees and hears us even in the midst of trials, many times caused by our own actions. Throughout this passage God continues to remind Abram of his promises and that even though it seems impossible, through Him, they will be fulfilled.

In this week’s episode we cover chapters 12-15 of Genesis. We discuss the beginning of God creating a people for himself through Abram and his family. We look at the call to Abram, the covenant that God makes with him, and how these point us to Jesus. We see that the call to Abram, to have absolute confidence in God, is the same call for us today. We continue to see the repeating themes of how taking our eyes off God can lead to sin, and God reminding His people of that creation mandate - to be fruitful and to have dominion.

On this week’s episode we discuss chapter 3 and the first part of chapter 4 of Genesis. These are some difficult stories that are sometimes hard to process. Satan enters the picture, the beginning of sin, Adam and Eve are cast out of the garden, and the first murder is committed. But even in what seems to be such a hopeless situation, God is giving us glimpses into His plan to send a redeemer. He is so loving, gracious, and merciful to pursue His children even when we run from Him time and time again!

We discuss how chapter 1 is a “drone type view” of creation while chapter 2 gives us a more zoomed in and personal look into this beautiful historical narrative. We love how this really shows us the contrast of how God is infinite yet so very intimate. When looking at the story of creation we want to remember that the “how” is not as important as the “why”. This week as we wrap up our series on community, we had the privilege of hearing Rocky Bush share her heart and tell her story about how God used her community in a time of pain and suffering. We are so very thankful to Rocky for being vulnerable and even making us cry because we believe that this episode is so very important no matter what season of life you are in. Like we discuss in the episode, James 1 says “consider it pure joy WHENever you face trials of many kinds.” Everyone is going to walk through seasons of difficulty. Whether you are the one relying on your community to lift you up or maybe it’s your turn to be that community for someone else, the Bible is clear that we need each other. We should be there to constantly point each other back to the cross and back to God. Living in true, godly community can be messy at times, but when it functions as it should , it can really be oh so beautiful!

In our 4th episode of our series all about who God is we had a wonderful conversation with Evie Nicholson about God’s immutability, the fact that he is never changing. Evie is a missionary for Campus Crusade and has so much wisdom about this topic. This is our first episode in a 3 part series on the Gospel. We thought the best place to start would be defining what the Gospel is. We discuss how the word “Gospel” means “good news” and that we can’t fully understand the good news without knowing the bad news as well. The bad news is that we are sinners, but the good news is that Jesus came as the perfect, blameless sacrifice to take on the punishment for those sins.
