The dreaded question... What do you charge for that? I have lots of workarounds for NOT answering that question when I'm on the spot and not totally sure what to say, but I also know it's important to give a real number in some contexts.

Knitting, baking, walking around my woodsy neighborhood. What do these three things have in common? They keep me from burning out.

When you're running a freelance writing business, especially if it's a significant source of your family's income, it can be easy to slip into "I should be working" mode around the clock. But let me tell you from personal experience... this doesn't work long-term.

You will burn yourself out until you're basically fried crispy.

This episode of Copy Chatter delves into why it's so important to give yourself downtime, as well as some of my favorite things to think about when it comes to taking downtime and what to do. This is one of those heart-to-heart episodes that's more about advice than about business tips, and I hope you benefit from the mistakes I share.

There's no love lost between Upwork and me, and one of my goals is to get every struggling writer off those bidding sites. Today's episode should help you begin to get your head around the whole "why would anyone work with me when there's a bunch of platforms where they can hire someone for pennies?" situation. This one's a little bit on the shorter side, but I think it'll help you no matter where you are in business.

Once you enter the world of freelance service providers, it's easy to get swept away in all the different types of offers out there. Group coaching programs and masterminds are two of the biggies that are supposed to help you grow your business... but do you really need to join one? And if so, which one? How do you know when it's time?

I've been around the block a few times, and I have stories to tell. This episode goes into what a mastermind is, what a group coaching program is, what the benefits are, and how to know if it's time to join one.

Once you get up and running, looking for marketing strategies for your freelance writing business, it's easy to fall down the rabbit hole of email lists. Do you need one? How frequently should you write? What do you even say? I remember getting caught in the vortex a few different times as I considered and reconsidered my email list situation.

Today's episode is all about the email list, the "lead magnet funnel," and how the whole shebang works, so you can make an informed decision about this particular strategy.

The email service provider I recommend to people just starting with an email list is MailerLite. I've used them for years and have always been happy with them.

Lots of people talk about the benefits of offering your own course. This is something I get a lot of super-secret questions about... it seems like many of us are afraid to say it out loud. Today I'm giving my one woman's hot take on whether or not you're ready to put out your own course. I'm mentioning a lot of the things I wasn't thinking about when I put my own course out, as well as some of the things that have surprised my fellow course creators along the way. This one's a little bit different, and it's not for everyone, but it's definitely something a lot of us are thinking about anyway.

Whether you're trotting the globe or plotting a staycation, a break from work is on the docket for you (I hope!). But how does the whole vacation thing work when you're a service provider and not a salaried employee with paid time off and all that? There are websites with a similar setup that will actually pay you what your writing services are worth. I scoured the web and put together this list of 10 content marketing agencies that "feel" similar to Upwork in a lot of ways, but the pay is loads better. I'll also give you my evaluation method for any writing gig, and 3 hot leads for agencies to pitch.

Maybe you've heard the rumors... you can find writing clients on Facebook. I'm here to tell you once and for all... that it's TRUE. And in this episode, I'm laying it out for you. What types of groups do you join? What does the process actually look like? How can you turn this into a major marketing strategy? All that and more!

Your writing rates are possibly one of the biggest decisions you'll have to make as a freelance writer. This decision alone can set the course for your business, good or bad. One of the best tools I know of to help you set -- and stick to -- your rates is the rate guide. In this episode, I talk about what a rate guide is, what to put in it, and how to use it. We'll also get into whether or not to post your rates on your website and the best ways to handle inquiries about what you charge.

In this episode, we're talking about specific things you can do to set your business up right for the new year. Plus, we'll get into some strategic planning and talking about how to shape your business around the life you want.

In this episode, I break down my annual planning and quarterly planning methods to help you set and reach your own goals. This episode is unlike most of the other ones. I talk about the HUGE mistake I've been making over the past few months, what the fallout was, how I figured it out, and how I fixed it. Plus I invite you to my favorite place on the internet, so we can all hug it out together. If you're frustrated, anxious, and maybe a little resentful about the very reason you got started as a freelance writer... this one's for you. You're not broken and you're not alone.

Ever stared at your calendar with dread, knowing you had some gaps to fill and no work to fill it? One of the best ways I've found is to ASK for work... and I don't mean pitching. In this episode, I'll share what I do... and what I've seen tons of other successful writers do... when it's time to get new work, fast. Every time I have a gap in my pipeline and I need to drum up more writing gigs, I do these things first.... because THEY WORK.

I've been in business for almost 10 years now... and for the first 9 of them, I did pretty much everything by myself. Now I know better, and I want you to know better, too! There's a LOT that a VA can offer you, even if you're "just" a freelance writer. In the time I started working with my VA, Heather, I've learned how amazing it is to have someone else taking care of all the "little stuff" in my business so I can focus on big-result stuff. YOU can benefit from a VA, too, and it doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg, either. In this episode, I share how I work with my own VA and how I think you, as a freelance writer, could also benefit from having one. I'll also give you some pointers about how to know when it's time to hire, what things to outsource first, and where to find a great VA for yourself. (Hint: her name is Heather and she's awesome! breakingtheconfines.com or contact@breakingtheconfines.com) Don't miss this one!

We've talked about the difference between copywriting and content writing before, but today I want to take a closer look at the career trajectory, the pros and cons of either niche, and how much money you can make. With this info, you can start to map out where you are and where you want your career to go.

One thing I've dealt with many times over my career -- and I've seen other writers deal with it constantly, too -- is this idea of accepting low rates (or even zero pay) in exchange for "exposure." Normally I'm pretty skeptical and would say don't do it, but there are a couple of exceptions. This episode shows you what they are and gives you a framework to decide for yourself whether or not writing "for exposure" is worth your time.

One of the most important questions you can answer for yourself is whether or not a niche is profitable. Now, I personally think it's possible to make some money doing just about anything. HOWEVER, there are some niches that just have way more opportunity than others. These are my best tips for knowing when you've found 'em (and some clues for finding them in the first place!).

I'm getting tons of questions right now about how to move into a new niche, whether it's a new one or one that you just want to add to the docket. In this episode, I'm sharing my "bridge" technique -- with real life examples -- to show you how to move into a new niche.

I've been talking a lot lately about why you should NOT pick a freelance writing niche, but that advice isn't forever for all people. So when DO you know you've found a good niche? And how do you move into it? That's what we're talking about in today's episode!

Probably the #1 question I get (or objection!) when I tell people they don't HAVE to pick a niche is this: "But how do I even market myself as a generalist?" This episode answers that question. I recently sent an email to my list about how it's ok NOT to choose a niche, and it sparked a lot of interesting discussion. This month, I'm bringing the conversation to the podcast.
