CONTEXT: The Corinthian church was in chaos with regards to public worship and the utilization of the public gifts of prophecy and tongues. (1 Corinthians 12-14)
CHURCH: The Church is a spiritual organism.
UNITY: All spiritual gifts are given to members of the church by our Triune God. This provides the foundational unity needed in a diverse body of believers.
DIVERSITY: The diversity of gifts reflects the diversity of ministries represented through the church.
DISTRIBUTION: Everybody is included in the distribution of gifts!
GOAL: We are to all work together for the common good!

Re-Dedicate: The Sacramental Life 1 Corinthians 10:23-11:1
What in the world was going on in Corinth?
Idolatry was at the heart of Paul’s concern.
The Presenting Issues 1. Could Christians attend festivals at pagan temples and eat the food sacrificed to pagan gods? 2. Could Christians eat meat sold at Corinthian markets? 3. How should Christians respond to dinner invitations from pagans? Could they eat the meat served in the homes of pagans?
What was at stake?
SUMMARY: Here is the challenge presented in 1 Corinthians and the same one we face today: How do we live holy and sacred lives in the midst of unholy societies? More pointedly, how do we live the Sacramental Life and still participate in the broader society as authentic witnesses for Christ?
SUGGESTIONS 1. We must be mature in our faith. 2. We are called to be salt and light. 3. We must be thoughtful, authentic, Spirit-led, and creative as we engage a non-Christian society as Christians

The church is not a cohesive community but a club, whose meetings provide important moments of spiritual insight and exaltation, but do not have global implications of moral and social change. The Corinthians could gladly participate in this church as one segment of their lives. But the segment, however important, is not the whole and the centre. Their perception of their church and of the significance of their faith could correlate well with a lifestyle which remained fully integrated in Corinthian society. -J. M. B. The church at Corinth in the first century was facing: division, incest, internal lawsuits, sexual immorality, questions about Christian marriage, arguments concerning meat purchased in the marketplace, debates about numerous issues in public worship, ignorance about spiritual gifts, misunderstanding about the resurrection, and eschatological debates.
What issues are we facing as a church in Arlington, Texas in the 21st century?

We believe the CHURCH IS THE BODY OF CHRIST ON EARTH TODAY! Jesus established the church, and it exists to perform God’s will on earth. Believers are to invest themselves in the life and work of the church. (Matthew 16:17-18; Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 12:27)
We are working to build a colony of heaven, an expression of the Kingdom of God, an example of God’s redemptive work ----- right here on earth in Arlington, Texas!

Our society is riddled with many messages that claim to be the truth.
Our temptation as contemporary, western Christians is to succumb to a message of reductionism or accommodation.
Why does it matter?
The message of Christianity embodies a theology of creation, sin, and redemption.
The gospel transforms the cross as a symbol of Roman terror and political domination into a symbol of God’s love and power. It shows that the power of God’s love is greater than human love of power.

Wisdom is not magic. God is not an object to be manipulated, more does God’s world belong to human beings. The consensus regarding sovereignty: 1) God is the good and just governor of nature and history in that he not only created but also sustains, guides, provides for and judges everything; 2) Nothing at all can happen in either nature or history that God does not at least allow; 3) God’s sovereign governance of nature and history is both “general” (i.e., through natural laws built into processes) and “special” (i.e.; extending to details of people’s lives).
Meticulous Providence – Whatever happens in nature and history is completely, exhaustively willed by God and not merely permitted. (Calvinism)

Ecclesiastes Life is short, complex, and uneven. Life is mysterious and paradoxical. There is goodness, joy, celebration, and love. There is evil, sorrow, pain, and suffering. We live amid blessing and brokenness with an eye toward eternity.
Wisdom comes from God. We gain wisdom by living in union with God. Wisdom involves discovering and embracing God’s perspective by listening to his voice and being attentive to his prompting. Reverence, knowledge, and devotion to God is the beginning of true wisdom.

What do workers gain from their toil?
I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Greek concept of “time”: · Aion = unbroken time (eternity) · Chronos = linear time (clock) · Kyros = right time (season)
Ecclesiastes begins by declaring that nothing matters. Everything is meaningless. Everything under the sun has been done before and will disappear like a vapor. Pleasure, wealth, and achievement can never satisfy the human heart.
Ecclesiastes concludes by declaring that everything matters – even ordinary, everyday things – if we are devoted to God, mindful of him, and orienting our lives toward him. God is the one who gives ultimate meaning to life.

We live in the shadow of death.
In sum, death has pointed its headlights at us and started its engine. Therefore, we must learn from God how to enjoy what he has given to us, knowing that none of it can save or satisfy us . . . So it is with our spouses, our food, our work, and our place in the world. Neither of these can satisfy our souls or provide the gain that only God can give. Many want to reshape this book and our sermons from it to sound like Isaiah or Paul, to align with the language of systematic theology, to comb the hair and remember our manners while in the presence of good company. But Ecclesiastes will not allow it. Bend it to your comfort zone, and you will miss what this God-inspired text reveals about him. There is more to God than what Isaiah and Paul alone can show you. -Zack Eswine

The surrounding culture of Corinth celebrated wealth, pleasure, and assertiveness. Sports, entertainment, and captivating speakers were favorite pastimes. Social status and rugged individualism were a source of great pride. Material possessions and personal achievements determined an individual's place in society. Perhaps things haven't changed so much over the past 2,000 years. -Curt Grice

Re-Oriented Through Generosity 2 Corinthians 9:6-15
RE-CONCILE: In the New Testament, the Greek word underneath the family of English words associated with reconciliation is taken from the accounting industry where coins were “exchanged”, and accounts were “reconciled.”
Jesus speaks clearly about the importance of reconciliation in Matthew 5:23-24, “If you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.” -Katy Reed-Hodges
CONTEXT: Paul collected a special offering from the Gentile churches for the impoverished members of the mother church in Jerusalem.
CHALLENGE: We all face the temptation of selfishness and stinginess!
A selfish man is never rich. His day is as long as his neighbour’s, yet he has no leisure except for his own amusements, no sympathy or concern beyond his own perplexities, no strength but to fight his own battles, and no money except for his own need; what haunts his mind at every turn is the dread of having too little for himself. -W.M. CORRECTIVE: Consider God ----- Who is so rich and so generous!
CONFORMING WORK OF CHRIST: The goal is not giving (in and of itself) – the goal is grace, growth, and generosity!
A key point in this matter of generosity is described in chapter 8. "Let the eagerness you showed in the beginning be matched now by your giving. Give in proportion to what you have. Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don’t have." Paul literally says, "let your doing complete your willingness based on what you have." It's important that all gifts be given joyfully, not grudgingly. That's why he refers to it as "the grace of giving." -Curt Grice

Mankind has long wondered about the grand questions of our existence. Where did we come from? Why are we here? How will this all end? Of course, the Bible offers a clear answer for anyone who will bother to read it. Another set of questions has to do with what went wrong and how can it be fixed? 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 provides a wonderful response to that. -Curt Grice
Re-Conciled! 2 Corinthians 5:11-21
REDEMPTION: God is the One Who is redeeming humanity and restoring creation!
RECONCILIATION: We can be reconciled to God only through Jesus Christ, His Son, and our Savior!
RECONCILERS: We have been sanctioned by God to be engaged in the ministry of reconciliation. The message of reconciliation is ours to share, and the reality of reconciliation is ours to practice.
As mentioned before, reconciliation is not typically something we strive for in Western culture. Certainly, it ought to be stated that sometimes it is appropriate to leave a relationship. Some relationships are so unhealthy and toxic that no one ought to return to the abuse or endangerment. Overall, though, our culture has blessed the quick and painless elimination of any relationship that is fractured. We are encouraged to leave a friendship rather than to circle back and make amends. We feel blessed to walk away from any association that is more difficult than we initially imagined. Divorce is still far too common. -Katy Reed-Hodges

RE-CONCILE: In the New Testament, the Greek word underneath the family of English words associated with reconciliation is taken from the accounting industry where coins were “exchanged”, and accounts were “reconciled.”
Biblical reconciliation starts with the divine initiative of God to reconcile the whole world back to himself. God chose to do this through Jesus’ sacrificial, reconciling death on the cross. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, our account with God is settled back to its proper balance, not by our work and merit, but by the grace and love of God in Christ. -Katy Reed-Hodges

In broad cultural terms, the average American doesn’t seem to spend much time or effort striving for reconciliation in their own life. The COVID isolation has left many relationships distant and damaged. More than ever, people are banding together by ideological belief and deeply dividing themselves from those who think differently. By and large, we are a divided people! If we're not careful, we can begin to think this is right or inevitable. We can live mirroring the culture around us and miss the richness of living in God’s restorative shalom. -Katy Reed-Hodges

Christian suffering often is the result of faithful living.
Only God provides true and deep comfort in the face of affliction.
Affliction can lead to a strengthening of our faith rather than diminishing our trust in God.
When we are re-plenished by God’s comfort, we can then be used by God to bring comfort to others.

Romans 8 begins with “no condemnation” and ends with “no separation.” And – there is “no defeat” in between!
INCARNATION – God sent His own Son, Jesus, to deal with humanity’s pervasive sin problem.
CONDEMNATION – God, through His Son Jesus, condemned sin and emptied it of its power!
SALVATION – It is only in Christ Jesus that we can experience the victory God provides!

Missions: The Mission Romans 15:17-21
Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God. I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done— by the power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit of God. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ. It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation. Rather, as it is written:
“Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand.”
The Church must transport this message of redemption to all peoples!
God’s Name is to be proclaimed to the nations and His glory is to be pursued to the ends of the earth.
God’s great plan will succeed!
We are all in this together!

Millions of people in today’s world are extremely hostile to the Christian missionary enterprise. They regard it as politically disruptive (because it loosens the cement which binds the national culture) and religiously narrow-minded (because it makes exclusive claims for Jesus), while those who are involved in it are thought to suffer from an arrogant imperialism. And the attempt to convert people to Christ is rejected as an unpardonable interference in their private lives. -John Stott
EMPOWERED! ENGAGED! EVERYONE! EVERYWHERE!
The exercise of power is inherent in the concept of a kingdom. But power in God’s kingdom is different from power in human kingdoms. The reference to the Holy spirit defines its nature. The kingdom of God is his rule set up in the lives of his people by the Holy Spirit. It is spread by witnesses, not by soldiers, through a gospel of peace, not a declaration of war, and by the work of the Spirit, not by the force of arms, political intrigue or revolutionary violence. At the same time, in rejecting the politicizing of the kingdom, we must beware of the opposite extreme of super-spiritualizing it, as if God’s rule operates only in heaven and not on earth. The fact is that, although it must not be identified with any political ideology or programme, it has radical political and social implications. Kingdom values come into collision with secular values. And the citizens of God’s kingdom steadfastly deny to Caesar the supreme loyalty for which he hungers, but which they insist on giving to Jesus alone.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
