Liz Booker @LiteraryAviatrix talks with fellow retired Coast Guard helicopter pilot Darcy Guyant @dolph_and_gwen about his picture book, Into the Storm: The Coast Guard Adventures of Dolph and Gwen. Darcy started his aviation career in the US Army and transitioned to the Coast Guard, which hires about a third of its pilots from other services through their Direct Commission Aviator program. In retirement, Darcy has become a beloved volunteer at his local elementary school, where the teachers encouraged him to write a book for young readers. The result is a picture book inspired by a search and rescue case he flew on during his active duty time, with a twist intended for his granddaughter: female pilot Gwen at the controls of her eager helicopter Dolph. They and their crew combine leadership, teamwork, and courage to help rescue the fishermen in distress, and show young people they can make a difference in the world.

Are you ready to explore the labyrinth of mental health among veterans, particularly the pressing issue of suicide? Let us guide you in this deep dive, with the assistance of our experienced guest, Megan Flaherty, a licensed clinical social worker from Hampton VA, who shines a light on suicide prevention - the VA's top clinical priority. We dissect the complexities of suicide prevention, emphasizing the power of universal screening, community dialogue, and the essential role of empathy when faced with a veteran admitting suicidal thoughts.
Our exploration continues as we zoom in on 'Lethal Means Safety' and the significance of community involvement. Megan unpacks the various strategies that create a buffer between destructive thoughts and the ability to act on them, highlighting effective measures such as gun locks and medication management. She also provides a glimpse into her role as the VA's Community Engagement and Partnership Coordinator, aimed at enhancing the community environment for veterans and their families.
Wrapping up our discussion, we delve into the changing attitudes towards mental health, especially among the younger generation. We examine how normalizing mental health talks has empowered more individuals to seek help. Megan touches on the emergency number 988 for veterans in crisis and the importance of considering social determinants of health. We wrap up with a discussion on the PACT Act and practical steps veterans exposed to harmful substances like burn pits and agent orange can take to access benefits. Listen to this enlightening episode and acquire the knowledge to make a significant difference in the lives of veterans.

Author, retired Air Force Colonel, former flight test engineer, and Executive Director of the Air Force Test Center, Edwards Air Force Base, California, Eileen Bjorkman, talks about her new book, FLY GIRLS REVOLT: THE STORY OF THE WOMEN WHO KICKED OPEN THE DOOR TO FLY IN COMBAT, available May 23rd, 2023. Eileen weaves her own experience as an Air Force flight test engineer in this history that, uniquely among books that follow the history of women in military aviation, bridges the gap between the WASP and the first active duty female aviators in the 1970s with the stories of the women who served in other roles in between. She also includes a detailed account of the Women Military Aviators’ (WMA) spectacular show of solidarity at a DACOWITZ hearing on changes in the Air Force’s flight training policy that threatened to further restrict women’s ability to progress professionally in the ranks. This book brings us new and complementary information on this incredibly important transition for women in military aviation, and features several outstanding and notable pioneers, not the least of whom is currently the Air Force Chief of Safety, Maj. General Jeannie Leavitt.

Paul Dillon joins Tyler for Part 3 of 3 series to discuss mental health parity and the Kennedy Forum.
The Kennedy Forum is a national non-profit organization formed by former U. S. Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy in 2013 to erase the stigma of mental illness in the United States, and to ensure mental health parity, so that mental health is treated the same way as physical health for reimbursement by insurance companies.
Veterans who get their healthcare through their employer plans need to know that the Mental Health Parity Act of 2008 mandates that insurance companies pay for mental health treatment the same as for physical health.

In this conversation with Mandy Hickson, author of An Officer Not a Gentleman, she talks about her experience as a Tornado GR4 combat pilot for the British Royal Air Force and how she has translated that experience to the business world as a motivational speaker. Mandy faced many of the challenges common to women in male-dominated fields with determination and humor. She also talks about how those moments seeded doubt and insecurity she might not have experienced otherwise, and how she overcame those feelings to become a successful pilot and leader. You can find her at her website, www.mandyhickson.com, and on social media @mandyhicksonspeaker.
The blurb:
‘MANDY, BREAK RIGHT…’ Jacko’s urgent scream shatters my bubble of bliss like a balloon exploding. My right hand slams the stick across and we tip over sideways, like a hard right turn on a roller coaster. I tense my stomach muscles to accept the punch in the guts from the g-suit, which clamps my legs tight to force the blood to my brain and stop me from blacking out. ‘Missile launch, five o’clock…’ says the strained voice of my nav into my headset. I am not daydreaming anymore. Flying a multi-million pound fighter jet in hostile territory is not an everyday career and it comes with a high degree of pressure and responsibility. It’s a dream job that takes years of ambition, training and commitment, but for Mandy Hickson, it was a dream that became reality.Find out about Mandy’s incredible journey to become one of the UK’s first female, fast-jet pilots and how she overcame many obstacles to develop the skills to succeed in such a demanding career.

In this interview Liz talks with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Beverly Weintraub, about her book Wings of Gold: The Story of the First Women Naval Aviators.
On Feb. 2, 2019, the skies over Maynardville, Tennessee, filled with the roar of four F/A-18F Super Hornets streaking overhead in close formation. In each aircraft were two young female flyers, executing the first all-woman Missing Man Formation flyover in Navy history in memory of Captain Rosemary Mariner — groundbreaking Navy jet pilot, inspiring commander, determined and dedicated leader — whose drive to ensure the United States military had its choice of the best America had to offer, both men and women, broke down barriers and opened doors for female aviators wanting to serve their country.
Selected for Navy flight training as an experiment in 1972, Mariner and her five fellow graduates from the inaugural group of female Naval Aviators racked up an impressive roster of achievements, and firsts: first woman to fly a tactical jet aircraft; first woman to command an aviation squadron; first female Hurricane Hunter; first pregnant Navy pilot; plaintiff in a federal lawsuit that overturned limits on women's ability to fulfill their military duty.
Leading by example, and by confrontation when necessary, they challenged deep skepticism within the fleet and blazed a trail for female aviators wanting to serve their country equally with their male counterparts.
This is the story of their struggles and triumphs as they earned their Wings of Gold, learned to fly increasingly sophisticated jet fighters and helicopters, mastered aircraft carrier landings, served at sea and reached heights of command that would have been unthinkable less than a generation before. And it is the story of the legacy they left behind, one for which the women performing the Navy’s first Missing Woman Flyover in Mariner’s memory owe a debt of gratitude.
2023 marks 50 years of women in Naval Aviation, and 30 years since the Combat Exclusion law was repealed allowing women to fly in combat. It also marks the first year the Blue Angels perform with a female F-18 Fighter Pilot, Lt. Amanda Lee, on the team.

Pam Bio
2200TAPS Founder and U.S. Coast Guard Veteran Pam Barragan found the key to healing were the stories being told through music and sharing her own story. It was this awareness that helped her take the unfathomable option of suicide 100% off the table. It is now her mission to share what she has learned by helping others share their own stories of trauma/tragedies because somebody needs to hear it. With a special place in her heart for Veterans who struggled and are continually struggling with PTSD such as herself, this has become more than a mission, it's also a passion. Music's been her saving grace since a little girl. Today she is now finding that silver string connection back to that little girl in who she is today that loved music.

What does it take to earn air force wings? Your heart, your soul, even your very life? Lieutenant Casey Tompkins is starting the most difficult flight training program in the world. She has to face thunderstorms, the death of friends, and male instructors who want to wash her out.
Captain Kathryn Hardesty is the toughest and best instructor pilot on the base and the chief of flight safety. She’s demanding because she knows the price of failure is tragedy and a smoking hole. She looks out for all the students, especially the female ones.
Casey has to learn to fly a supersonic jet, not get killed in the process, and face a growing forbidden attraction. Can she muster the intelligence, courage, and unbreakable determination to become an air force pilot? Does she have what it takes to earn wings, find love, and not crash and burn?

Today Tyler talks with Priya Sridhar, broadcast journalist/reporter and Navy Reservist Public Officer and Board Member with the Military Veterans Journalism (MVJ) Network. As our service members transition out of service journalism is a field of interest that can be continued or explored through MVJ. They offer a diverse range of programs (https://www.mvj.network/programs/) to help those looking for a new purpose and/or career.
Military Veteran Journalism Mission
https://www.mvj.network/
Military Veterans in Journalism’s mission is simple: get more military veterans working in America’s newsrooms.
The United States has been at war for more than 18 years at a cost of more than 7,000 lives, about 50,000 wounded and billions in tax dollars. Yet military veterans are vastly underrepresented in our nation’s newsrooms.
While about 7 percent of Americans have served in the armed forces, only 2 percent of media workers are military veterans, according to U.S. Census data.
Veterans bring perspective, nuanced understanding and on-the-ground experience about the military and veteran affairs that ultimately benefits newsrooms and news consumers.

In this interview, Liz talks with author Raquel Ramsey, the widow of decorated veteran Ed Ramsey, and her coauthor, Tricia Aurand about their book TAKING FLIGHT: THE NADINE RAMSEY STORY, about WWII Women Air Force Service Pilot, Nadine Ramsey.
In October 1944 Nadine Ramsey was thirty-three and she was flying the cutting-edge P-51 Mustang to New Jersey, its last stop before heading to the war in Europe. The irrepressible young woman from Wichita had long been determined to fly and the gathering storm clouds of World War II provided an unexpected opportunity. Taking Flight is the inspiring story of a girl from Depression-era Kansas who overcame tremendous challenges and defied convention to become an elite pilot—one of the few American women to fly fighter aircraft during World War II.
Taking Flight follows Nadine as she became one of 1,102 women to join the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots and one of only 303 WASPs to take to the skies in military cockpits, transporting aircraft to bases across the nation for use in the theaters of war. This book marks her milestones: the first Kansas woman to earn a commercial pilot license; among the earliest women to fly the US Air Mail; one of only 26 WASPs who flew the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, a fighter aircraft—and the first woman to own one; the only woman in the country to instruct male pilots to fly fighter planes after the war. Disbanded in late 1944 to make way for male pilots and barred from piloting for commercial airlines, the WASPs spent the next three decades fighting to win veteran status.
Taking Flight: The Nadine Ramsey Story is a profile in courage of a woman who helped clear the flight path for today’s female combat and commercial aviators.

In this episode, Tyler talks with Tim Tetz, Director of Outreach at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund about the healing and reflection this mobile education center provides to the veteran community and their families as well as an educational resource for young minds.
On Veterans Day 1996, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) unveiled a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., designed to travel to communities throughout the United States. Since its dedication, The Wall That Heals has been displayed at nearly 700 communities throughout the nation, spreading the Memorial’s healing legacy to millions.
Bringing The Wall home to communities throughout our country allows the souls enshrined on the Memorial to exist once more among family and friends in the peace and comfort of familiar surroundings. The traveling exhibit provides thousands of veterans who have been unable to cope with the prospect of facing The Wall to find the strength and courage to do so within their own communities, thus allowing the healing process to begin.
The main components of The Wall That Heals are The Wall replica and the mobile Education Center.
The Wall That Heals exhibit was on the road for more than 13,000 miles and visited 26 communities from coast to coast during its 2021 season. We were escorted by more than 3,000 vehicles into those communities, and we were able to spread The Wall’s healing legacy to nearly 200,000 visitors. Guided tours of the exhibit were provided to more than 12,000 students.

In this episode of Straight To The Point, Paul and Tyler dive into the National Cemetery Administration burial process and benefit that is available to veterans. Preparing for the inevitable is always a task many avoid but it is essential to getting your affairs in order for not only yourself but for your loved ones as well.
The National Cemetery Administration oversees and maintains 130 national cemeteries for veterans. For a veteran to be eligible for burial within one of these cemeteries it is recommended to visit https://www.va.gov/burials-memorials/pre-need-eligibility/ and complete the Pre-Need Eligibility Determination to see if you qualify for a burial in one of the national cemeteries.
If a veteran is buried within one of these national cemeteries their family members will be able to be comforted that their loved one's final resting place will be maintained in perpetuity. For the ceremonies that accompany a burial those can be arranged by your funeral director through DOD.
To learn more call the National Scheduling Office at 800-535-1117
If you decide to not apply and go with a private cemetery there is a burial benefit however it is well below what it costs for normal burial expenses.

Stopping the Hamster Wheel of Life to heal the mind and body
Tyler talks with Ryan Mielcarek, Seabee OIF Veteran about Veteran Rites and their mission to initiate Veterans into True Identity, Purpose, and Belonging after military service.
Veteran Rites honors everyone’s individual journey, regardless of ability, combat experience, military service, age, race, ethnicity, national origin, gender identity, sexual, religious, political, or spiritual preference.
Experience the journey. Visit their website at https://www.veteranrites.org/
Ryan's Bio
Ryan Mielcarek, Seabee OIF Veteran with three tours to Iraq. I truly came home to True Identity, Purpose, and Belonging at my Rite of Return in 2017 after years of slowly sinking in the quicksand of anxiety, post-traumatic stress, moral injury, substance abuse, and depression after military service. I need veteran transformation, not just transition. This is where I began to truly lay down and write a new story. It is our prayer at Veteran Rites that you and all of our people cross that line to claim your peace and share your gifts with wild freedom.
Prior to Veteran Rites, I worked on local and national cross-sector initiatives to end homelessness and increase housing affordability for vulnerable populations and led holistic veteran engagement efforts to combat homelessness, suicide, trauma, and isolation. I have a Bachelor's Degree from UW and a Master's Degree from Seattle University with a capstone on making HUD-VASH funding available to Native American and Alaskan Native military veterans.

Tish connects with Sgt. Cody Bates, US Army Veteran to talk about his motivation to serve, three deployments and the importance of brain donation. While deployed, Cody sustain numerous injuries due to IEDs and mortar rounds which resulted in TBIs. The repercussions of head trauma can lead to multiple symptoms and challenging health issues such as depression, damage to the pituitary gland, neurological disorders and more. These health issues makes it even more important to pre-register for brain donation to help others who may be struggling with head trauma symptoms and disorders.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is a tax free monthly benefit paid to eligible survivors of military Servicemembers who died in the line of duty or eligible survivors of Veterans whose death resulted from a service-related injury or disease.
This can be a complicated process but well worth the assistance for loved ones especially since any disability compensation will no longer be paid if a veteran/service member passes. Paul explains in detail how the DIC benefits works and who it benefits.

The importance of talking to your loved ones about your wishes prior to passing is often a tough conversation but a necessary one.
Tish is joined today by Suzanne Waddingham, a registered nurse with the Semper Fi & America's Fund Visiting Nurse Program, to discuss brain donation. Suzanne works with service members and their long term medical case management to help them to navigate the medical systems they're dealing with and reduce the barriers to care. Tyler is honored to have special guest CPL Matthew R. Bradford, USMC (RET) on our podcast today. On September 11, 2001, as a freshman in high school, Matthew like so many others watched the terrorist attacks on America’s soil. He knew at that moment he wanted to join the military after graduating and in September 2005 Matthew enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
On January 18, 2007, Matthew was severely injured after stepping on an Improvised Explosive Device in Haditha Iraq. This moment put Matthew on a detour and he would learn the true meaning of overcoming and adapting. He did not know the extent of his injuries until he woke up in Bethesda Naval Hospital three weeks later.
Matthew never lets his injuries define who he is or what he can do. Each obstacle is a new challenge. Over the years he has been inspired to share his story to motivate others through their own life challenges with his message of Just Walk. Even without Legs and Vision, you can still have No Problems.
Tune in to hear Matthew's journey in learning to adapt and overcome his adversities so he could move forward to living his best life.

Tyler has the honor of chatting with Steven Nisbet, a 16 year U.S. Air Force Special Warfare Pararescueman, Veteran Entrepreneur and Co-Founder/President of Shields and Stripes Inc, about providing first line defenders the opportunity to heal visible and non-visible wounds so they can live the lives they deserve to live.
The Shield and Stripes vision: Shields and Stripes are bringing Special Operations resilience experience to care for our first-line defenders. Our innovative solution treats a sub-population suffering in silence to increased levels of mental health issues. Additionally, Shields and Stripes encourages help-seeking culture change among the service members, veterans, and first responder community. Our compassion and determination decreases negative perceptions, minimizes bias and eliminates discrimination against those isolated and in pain so they don’t get left behind.

Steve's Bio
Steven Nisbet is a Veteran Entrepreneur. He served nearly 16 years and medically retired in June 2021 from the U.S. Air Force as a Special Warfare Pararescueman. Steven is the Co-Founder and current President of Shields and Stripes Inc.
Steven grew up in Tucson Arizona with aspirations to go to college and play soccer. After graduating high school and attending a local community college studying Astronomy, Steven decided to enlist in the military to become a Pararescueman in October of 2005. Steven always had a drive and passion to help others, which made his decision to become a Pararescueman a no brainer. Steven served in 10 combat deployments in various operating areas to include Afghanistan, Africa, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. Over this period, Steven has lost over 15 team mates to combat or combat related circumstances and has himself experienced mental health injuries due to sustained combat operations.
As Steven transfers from military to civilian life, his passion to help others is just as strong as when he began. His personal experiences with PTSD and other trauma related symptoms have made him acutely aware of those groups that are in need of the very treatment he received. Steven identified a lack of mental and physical health support within the Law Enforcement and First Responder communities, thus creating Shields and Stripes.
He is the son of a 30 year Law Enforcement veteran and knows first hand how these careers can affect the individual. Steven’s mission with Shields and Stripes is to change the way public service professionals are cared for when they sustain mental and physical injuries caused by the career path they have chosen.
“Make your team follow you because they want to, not because they have to.”

In this conversation with author Melody Foreman, Liz and Melody talk about WWII British Air Transport Auxiliary pilot Mary Ellis who she features in her biography A SPITFIRE GIRL: ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST FEMALE ATA FERRY PILOTS TELLS HER STORY, and Melody's other work, which focuses on Britain in WWII. The ATA Ferry pilots were challenged with climbing into a variety of aircraft with little-to-no type training and made significant contributions to the war. Mary Ellis alone flew 76 different types of aircraft and 400 Spitfires in her five years of service as an ATA pilot, often with no other preparation than a crib-sheet. Melody also highlights the significant contributions these women made for gender equality, earning equal pay to their male counterparts. Despite their incredible achievements, and the positive attitude Mary conveys in this memoir, they still endured age-old challenges. In the movie SPITFIRE: THE PLANE THAT SAVED THE WORLD, a gentleman veteran says, "We knew we could depend upon each other. We knew we were sure of getting support wherever we were." The women, however, among other humiliations and difficulties, often were forced to manage their deliveries according to the bases where their male counterparts would allow them to land. As Mary put it: "Men take ownership of war and talk endlessly of their duty. I can't imagine why they don't think women feel such things, too."

In today's episode, Paul and Tyler discuss the tips and tricks to using your GI Bill. It is important to be aware of how your housing allowance is directly based on the amount of credits you are taking each month/semester. This can be very important if you are dependent on your allowance. An added perk to getting an education, the VA offers a tutoring allowance if you find yourself struggling with a course and being able to stay in the class versus dropping the class. Paul also touches on nonprofits that can help with additional expenses such a Boots to Books and the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes. Tune to learn more.

As we approach the 9/11 anniversary, Tyler talks with friend and Retired Army Chaplain Colonel Ret., Motivational Speaker and Author, Joel P Jenkins about his time at the Pentagon post 9/11. Dr. Jenkins reflects on the months after and his honorable responsibilities to officiate memorials for those who died that day.
As his way to honor those that had fallen, Dr. Jenkins wrote a book to titled
These Honored Dead-Reflections on the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 by Chaplain (Colonel) (R) Joel Jenkins
This book describes the experiences of an Army chaplain who officiated at the first two Memorial Services conducted in the Pentagon after 9/11, and his support to the survivors.
On this 20th anniversary year of 9/11, this book seeks to honor and remember those who died on that day, while also honoring and remembering the fallen heroes from all of America’s wars.
This book is a call for America: to never forget the over a million fellow Americans who died for their country; and to encourage today’s overworked “all volunteer” military.
Stories are included from Chaplain Jenkins' service in Iraq, on the staff of General Martin Dempsey, and from his tenure as the Rear Detachment chaplain for the 82nd Airborne Division. With the 82nd, Chaplain Jenkins officiated at over one hundred services for fallen paratroopers.
The book traces the struggles, and eventual breakthroughs, of native Americans, Afro Americans, Japanese and Chinese minorities in relation to military service. Against major barriers, heroic service and sacrifice are seen from these groups.
Various vignettes of military heroes, from the 19th century until the present, are described as a reminder for America to be grateful for the sacrifices of her military.

In this episode, Tyler talks with Joy Carlson, author and teacher, about her journey caring for her son, Kevin Ash after his debilitating accident on the rugby field in her book, Faith Alone ~ A Mother and Son Story of Hope and Love. Kevin was part of the military for 10 years and had multiple deployments. Upon his return, Joy watched as her son's physical and mental health began to deteriorate, completely unaware of the degenerating disease that was destroying his brain.
Listen in to Joy's story and how she turned her pain into writing her story so others will feel they are not alone.

A crossover from our sister podcast Behind the Service
Welcome to Behind the Service hosted by Libby Bates as she sits down with Dr. Dan Perl from Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.
Dr. Perl was the primary investigator on the study of CTE in the brains of military personnel that was published June 9, 2022 in the New England Journal of Medicine.
We had some caregivers with questions regarding the study and the best way to answer those questions was to chat with Dr. Perl to gain some more clarity for everyone.

Women Veteran Helicopter Pilots
Amber Smith – DANGER CLOSE: MY EPIC JOURNEY AS A COMBAT HELICOPTER PILOT IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN
Guest Host Liz Booker talks with Amber Smith, a former U.S. Army Warrant Officer and Kiowa Warrior helicopter pilot and author of Danger Close: My Epic Journey as a Combat Helicopter Pilot in Iraq and Afghanistan, about her call to service, her experiences as a woman in an Army Cavalry unit in Iraq and Afghanistan, and her reflections on that service.
Since leaving the Army, Amber has established herself as a national security, foreign policy, and military analyst, and frequently appears on television and radio. Her articles have been published in Forbes, the Washington Examiner, and Aviation Week, among others. You can find her at her website, www.OfficialAmberSmith.com or on social media @AmberSmithUSA.
Amber never imagined she would write a memoir, but after gaining her confidence in writing during her post-service master’s degree program, she decided her experiences might inform and inspire others.
“I tell so many people who have served, write down your story . . . write it down, because what you did was different. Less than one percent of the population is serving in the military at any given time, so a lot of people don’t have those experiences and are interested in learning about them. I always say that writing my book gave me some closure to that chapter of my life that I didn’t know that I was looking for.”
Liz Booker is a retired Coast Guard helicopter pilot and writer for young adults. She hosts the Aviatrix Book Club and the Aviatrix Book Review Website and Podcast. This episode is a rebroadcast of the Aviatrix Book Review podcast Season 1 Episode 28 in collaboration with

Women Veterans are under-represented in TBI/PTSD/CTE research and the Concussion Legacy Foundation (CLF) and Project Enlist are working to change the numbers by asking our female veterans to Make The Pledge!
In today's episode guest host, Scott Wert, Military Program Director for CLF , has the honor of talking with Gretchen Evans, a retired Army Command Sergeant Major with 27 years of service to our nation. Gretchen was part of a generation of women that experienced drastic change in the military, especially where women are concerned. In 2006, while deployed to Afghanistan, Gretchen sustained a life changing TBI. Since then, she has overcome her challenges to lead Team UNBROKEN, an adventure race team you may have seen on Amazon’s “World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji.” Gretchen has written an excellent book, “Leading From the Front,” and has a passion for continued service by taking care of her fellow Veterans through several relationships with charities, non-profit organizations, and Veterans funds.
Gretchen has taken The Pledge and encourages other female veterans to consider also taking the pledge to help further the research in TBI/PTSD/CTE.

Bio
After dropping out of high school, Liz enlisted in the Coast Guard at 18 and worked as a deck hand and ship navigator for five years before attending Officer Candidate School. A year later she completed Navy flight training and flew the H65 Dolphin helicopter out of San Francisco, Miami, and Los Angeles. She was on Active Duty for 15 years and was an O4 before she finally earned a bachelor’s degree online with American Military University and applied for the Coast Guard’s graduate school programs. In 2008 she completed a Master’s in Public Administration at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. She spent the last six years of her 28-year career in Joint billets as the Deputy J3 at Joint Interagency Task Force South and as the Senior Defense Official to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean working for Southern Command out of the U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown. While she was assigned to JIATF-SOUTH, she used the rest of her GI Bill to earn a second master’s degree in writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
Liz’s Harvard experience gave her the confidence and skills to network and advocate for the Coast Guard’s women in aviation. It also opened her aperture to how she might positively impact the wider aviation culture and demographics through writing adventure fiction for young readers. She retired in 2019 to write full time, but was challenged to maintain her momentum during Covid, feeling isolated from the aviation community. As a way to reconnect, she launched the Aviatrix Book Club on Facebook. That small idea has blossomed into a rich network of readers and writers centered around books featuring women in aviation. Liz hosts the Aviatrix Book Review website and podcast where she interviews authors about their books and their writing and publishing journeys. The authors are connected through the Aviatrix Writers Facebook Group, where they encourage and mentor other women in aviation to share their stories through writing.

Paul and Tyler get straight to the point on what is TDIU and who is eligible, as well as the monetary benefits it can supply when you are unable to work. In order for a veteran to apply for TDIU (Total Disability Individual Unemployability), the veteran must demonstrate unemployability because of the disability. Today's episode focuses on a very important topic, mental health. Tyler talks with Dr. Mark Russell, a Marine Corp and Navy veteran, clinical psychologist, educator, and founder/director of the Institute of War Stress, Injury, Recovery, and Social Justice at Antioch University in Seattle, about the need for a Behavioral Health Corps within the military.
"The military has an opportunity to become a leader in the field of mental health and really eliminate the stigma in the disparity between mental and physical health. And if the military chooses to do that, I think we could see some advances in mental health that we can't imagine. So I'm hopeful that as the military goes, so goes society. I hope that that ends up being the truth there." ~ Dr. Mark Russell
The Mission
The mission of the Institute is two-fold: (1) investigate, identify, and eliminate root causes for repetitive crises in military mental healthcare, and (2) end the cycle of crises by transforming mental healthcare policy and practice. Although special emphasis is given to the estimated 24 million members of the warrior class including their family members, and healers-the activities of the Institute will equally benefit non-military populations through the advancement of knowledge and understanding of traumatic stress-related injuries.
Stranger at Home Film
STRANGER AT HOME reveals WHY a harmful, 100 year-old policy perpetuates catastrophic PTS and suicide rates amongst our country’s military community. The film offers an in-depth look at eradicating stigma and creating a National Behavioral (Mental) Health Corps as achievable and critical steps to end an unnecessary mental health crisis.
STRANGER AT HOME contrasts the intimate stories of three Veterans — Mark Russell, Charles Figley and Steven Elliott — with their unified message, which is: mental healthcare reform is the most essential human rights frontier ahead of us, and that it’s time for the American Military to take the lead role in this profoundly important movement.
Thank You For Your Service Documentary
An investigation into the failed mental health policies within the US military and the deadly consequences to America’s troops. Thank You For Your Service takes aim at our understanding of war trauma through the interwoven stories of four struggling Iraq War veterans and candid interviews with top military and civilian leaders. The film posits that from the moment someone enters the armed services, their mental health is as important as their physical well-being and that by the creation of a Behavioral Health Corps (BHC), services and treatment can be effectively streamlined and create long term accountability.
Featuring interviews with General David Petraeus, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Mike Mullen, General Loree Sutton, Dexter Filkins, Senator Patty Murray, Gary Sinise, and Nicholas Kristof.

The connection between a veteran and a horse is a very honest and transparent understanding unlike anything else. In today's episode, Tyler talks with Donna Simpson, founder and executive director of Pennsylvania War Horse, about their programs to help veterans and race horses heal through a common bond.
Pennsylvania Warhorse is a Pennsylvania based not-for-profit corporation, established to help military and 1st responders suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and TBI (traumatic brain injury). Statistics show that horses have a calming effect on the nerves, lower blood pressure, cause a chemical change in our brains and relieve stress. Participating military and 1st responders interact with our horses under the watchful eye of trained equine professionals. Horsemanship has a proven effect in helping people deal with stress and build better relationships and find a renewed value in their life. Even if they aren't horsemen or horsewomen they can benefit from what horses have to teach us.

In this episode, Tyler talks with Edward Tick, PhD, a nonfiction writer and poet, about his recent book "Coming Home In Viet Nam: Poems " as well as Greek traditions and some of the oldest writings on warfare. In addition to a writer/poet, Dr. Tick is a transformational healer, holistic psychotherapist, educator, consultant and international journey guide who has been working with veterans for a long time to help with moral injuries and PTSD.
COMING HOME IN VIET NAM (TIA CHUCHA PRESS, 2021)
Seeking the most powerful healing practices to address the invisible wounds of war, Dr. Ed Tick has led journeys to Viet Nam for veterans, survivors, activists and pilgrims for the past twenty years. This moving and revelatory collection documents the people, places and experiences on these journeys. It illuminates the soul-searching and healing that occurs when Vietnamese women and children and veterans of every faction of the "American War" gather together to share storytelling and ritual, grieving, reconciliation and atonement. These poems reveal war's aftermath for Vietnamese and Americans alike and their return to peace, healing and belonging in the very land torn by war's horrors.

Life is hard and it can get even harder when you are on the frontline. Whether it is abroad or at home, day in and day out exposure to trauma and suffering can wear a person's mental well being down to a thin line. In this episode, Tyler talks with Dwayne Schwartz about Operation K9 Hero and the importance of connection. Dwayne, along with his partner, a yellow lab named Tio, hit the road and visit with veterans, first responders such as law enforcement officers, paramedics, EMT's and firefighters.
The first unique aspect is Tio, the icebreaker. He asks no questions, doesn't care where you have been or where you are going. All he knows is he wants to sit quietly by your side, bring you comfort and is 100% free of judgment. And the second unique aspect is Dwayne, who has been there and done that as a first responder. He understands the frontline. He gets the road so many have and continue to travel because of the constant exposure to trauma.
Dwayne and Tio are located in Wisconsin but if you are interested in creating a path of connection closer to your home or just want to connect with Dwayne and Tito you can check out their website at operationk9hero.org or send an email to info@operationk9hero.org.

MEET AUREA FRANKLIN
Aurea retired from the 101st Airborne Division, Air Assault (AASLT), and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom for four years: two tours with the 101st and two years as a civilian contractor. She received numerous medals and awards, including two Bronze Star Medals for meritorious service in a combat zone.
The first Bronze Star was received while she was with Bravo Company, 101st Soldier Support Battalion, serving as a Casualty Liaison Team Leader for AASLT in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Mosul, Iraq (2003-2004). The second Bronze Star was received for outstanding performance as Human Resources NCOIC, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, COB Speicher in Tikrit, Iraq (2005-2006).
She holds three master’s degrees: two Masters of Business Administration and one Master of Public Administration. She works in Washington, D.C., and continues to support various veterans programs. Pension Poachers is the slang for "pay for profit agents" who show up to help people with their benefits often under situations of duress. Paul chats with Tyler about the importance of preparing loved ones about their veteran's compensation benefits which will help to eliminate a lot of financial confusion once the veteran has passed. There are several different free services available such as state veteran agencies or American Legions, so it is wise to avoid individuals asking for compensation to help with the claims process.
Paul talks about the responsibility of the family member to notify the VA about the passing of their veteran as the compensation amounts will change so the surviving spouse will need to be knowledgeable of how this will affect their current income. Paul and Tyler also talk about the Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) which is paid to eligible survivors of military Service Members who died in the line of duty or eligible survivors of Veterans whose death resulted from a service-related injury or disease.
Avoiding discovery moments in difficult periods of time is one of the best gifts you can give to your loved ones. Make a point to sit down and have the conversation.

In this episode, Libby Bates, host of our sister podcast, Behind the Service, steps in for Tyler to chat with Dr. Michael Mithoefer about MDMA Assisted Therapy for PTSD. Dr. Mithoefer is the Senior Medical Director for Medical Affairs, Training and Supervision for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). Dr. Mithoefer covers his background and what inspired his passion to help the veteran community heal from PTSD and trauma.
Dr. Mithoefer describes the process of participating in a MDMA Assisted Therapy Trial and how the use of MDMA decreases fear and defensiveness to enable the desire to discuss the trauma. Several participants have expressed the inability to move forward or process the trauma clearly, however, after several sessions they have been able to evolve within a safe, controlled environment. Creating a new perspective!
MDMA Assisted Therapy is currently in its third stage of clinical trials. Follow the research at maps.org/mdma/ptsd . Follow on MAPS news on Instagram @mapsnews
Bio for Dr. Michael Mithoefer
Michael Mithoefer, M.D., is a psychiatrist living in Asheville, NC, with a research office in Charleston, SC. In 2000, he began collaborating with MAPS on the first U.S. Phase 2 clinical trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy. He and his wife Annie have since conducted two of the six MAPS-sponsored Phase 2 clinical trials testing MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD, as well a study providing MDMA-assisted sessions for therapists who have completed the MAPS-sponsored MDMA Therapy Training Program, and a pilot study treating couples with MDMA-assisted psychotherapy combined with Cognitive-Behavioral Conjoint Therapy. He is now Senior Medical Director for Medical Affairs, Training and Supervision at MAPS Public Benefit Corporation (MAPS PBC). He is a Grof-certified Holotropic Breathwork Facilitator, is trained in EMDR and Internal Family Systems Therapy, and has nearly 30 years of experience treating trauma patients. In this episode, Tyler talks with Mary Cronk Farrell, an award winning journalist and author, about Catherine Leroy, one of the first female photographers during the Vietnam war. An inspiring and fascinating story of the woman who gave a human face to the Vietnam War. Close-Up on War tells the story of French-born Catherine Leroy, one of the war’s few woman photographers, who documented some of the fiercest fighting in the 20-year conflict. Although she had no formal photographic training and had never traveled more than a few hundred miles from Paris before, Leroy left home at age 21 to travel to Vietnam and document the faces of war. Despite being told that women didn't belong in a “man’s world,” she was cool under fire, gravitated toward the thickest battles, went along on the soldiers’ slogs through the heat and mud of the jungle, crawled through rice paddies, and became the only official photojournalist to parachute into combat with American soldiers. Leroy took striking photos that gave America no choice but to look at the realities of war—showing what it did to people on both sides—from wounded soldiers to civilian casualties.

Brandon's story is heartbreaking and a preventable tragedy that veterans face everyday. In this episode, Tyler is joined by Brandon's parents, Teri and Patrick Caserta, to talk about Brandon's story and The Brandon Act.
The Brandon Act is designed to protect service members who experience mental health emergencies and reduce the stigma around reporting. This bill will allow service members to seek mental health treatment, and require a mental health evaluation as soon as a service member self-reports. It will also allow Americans serving in uniform to seek help confidentially and, if necessary, outside of the chain of command.

Let's talk Bees! Tyler talks with Matis Stebben, co-founder of Beekeeping for Veterans on connecting bees with veterans to heal the wounds of trauma. Matis discusses their wellness program that pairs beekeeping with the practice of mindfulness to create an overall healing on the mind and body.
Part one is the interactions of beekeeping which help to lower distress and improve mood through the increase in endorphins. Combining the necessity to stay calm and be mindful of one's movements with the positive rush of adrenaline of being in the midst of thousands of bees, can produce a very unique feeling of euphoria.
And part two, adding in the practice of mindfulness helps reduce anxiety and teaches to be in the moment, in the present, and not to be thinking about combat engagement [or other stressful or traumatic events]. Therefore, combining beekeeping and mindfulness practices is a win-win in helping to heal the veteran, as well as, increasing the bee population.

Tyler chats with John Preston, founder of 22 and You, a movement to save lives of first responders and veterans suffering from post traumatic stress (PTS). John started the movement by embarking on a 630 mile hike from Palo Alto to San Diego that caught the attention of many individuals, including first responders and veterans that joined to walk alongside John. Encouraged by John’s perseverance, these fellow hikers shared their own personal battles or stories of loss as they descended the California coast together. John brought along a film crew also composed of veterans and first responders that not only covered the hike but helped him push on to the finish line on the USS Midway. The movement was inspired by the loss of John’s older brother Michael in January 2016. After Michael’s passing, John had two singles about combatting suicide into the DRT Top 20 and iTunes Top 200, charting with some of the most popular rock and pop artists in the world. The success of his music was getting attention, but John never found a way to fully explain the experience of losing his brother with words alone. He thought if he put himself through horrific physical pain, he may be able to finally express to the world the pain of losing a loved one to suicide. 22 miles a day, 28 days, with a 22-kilogram rucksack.
