Your career is not a ladder! Often see solpreneurs well into their journey getting caught up in a “ladder” model of thinking - their success is only measured by going “up” in a very narrow way (income, team).
In this episode I share a new paradigm to consider for your career - the jungle gym and how you can leverage it to build a more successful and sustainable entrepreneurial career.

⚠️ There is (non-descriptive/non-detailed) talk about child abuse in this episode. ⚠️
Hailey After-Hours Strikes again. This time, we're talking about toxic relationships to goals and goal achievement and their mirror to our experience as children to goals and the authority figures in our lives.
Some of y’all make your goals “help” you the way it was believed that beating and berating kids “helped” with their behavior and good grades.
Ie; “threat of violence for compliance” vs “space for learning & skill mastery.”
Violence & Compliance: It gets them to do what you want them to do at this moment BUT only if they are already capable of demonstrating that skill. If they don’t have the tools yet or if something is stopping them from using those tools you will get an even worse negative result.
Learning & Mastery: The task and skill demonstration needs to be explored so they actually master the skills (which means examination, explanation and trial and error).
Take a few minutes to bring awareness of your relationship to yourself + goal setting/achievement and how it mimics your relationship to authority figures + goal achievement growing up.
Any room for switching up that narrative?

Rihanna hasn’t put out an album since 2016.
SEVEN YEARS.
Even as her contemporaries' careers have skyrocketed. Even as amazing artists have come into themselves who would make EXCELLENT collab partners. Even as newer folks have come into her market saying/doing things she probably would have liked to.
Instead, Rihanna has been busy giving us Fenty Beauty and Fenty x Savage lingerie line (a billion dollar valuation among both brands that have very successfully grown by focused on underserved markets. Talk about high impact, high profit!!!). She started and exited a short lived high-end fashion brand (she tried and failed some stuff, keeping her identity of a successful entrepreneur). She took time to start her family.
And still came back into music at the single most viewed sporting event in the world.
Regardless of her privilege and the weight her name carries, her career the last decade is a masterclass in capital I identity. Here’s what I’m taking from it:

You might not have a compelling vision today and guess what!? That’s perfectly okay.
You might have/be:
Here’s what you do:
#1: Tell yourself you’re not allowed to vision. Give the expectation a rest.
Example: In sex (as per Dr. Emily Nogoski in her very excellent book, Come as You Are) - if you’re not having orgasms but want to be, the best way to have orgasms – is to tell yourself you’re NOT ALLOWED to have orgasms and then go have a lot of fun having sex.
OYFN visions are pretty similar - tell yourself YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE ANY VISION.
It almost always evokes a “well, I mean… I do want…” and the fun of it, the pursuit of pleasure and the presence that’s created…. that creates fire.
So step one - no orgasms, er, uh, I mean, no vision, just go have fun with step #2:
#2: Choose a vantage point to work towards.
If you can’t see the whole thing now - get somewhere else where you have a better change of seeing. Pick a point that’s different from where you are now. Get there. Look out again and see what you can see.
Get to your next vantage point. Work with dedication and presence on what’s in front of you. Even if it’s smaller, not permanent, and not “the thing.” Do it anyway. Don’t worry about scaling. Just get to the next vantage point.
PS: Not having a strong compelling vision isn't actually a disqualifer for working with me in The Residency. Why? Because this is a real-life container for real-life entpreneurs. This is DEFINELTY going to happen in your life time journey as an entpreneur. And I can help you work through shedding the expectation and getting to your next vantage point and beyond. Today, we wrap up our series of $30k questions! My hope is that you found at least one or two questions that created big shifts in your thinking along the way. Maybe you’ve already applied some lessons, will apply them tomorrow, or maybe they’ll come up three months from now. Whichever the case, I want to leave you with one last question for the month: does something need more time or more quality attention?
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I ask you one of my favorite questions: how do you know when you’re done? I love addressing teams with this but this question also works great for yourself. There’s a lot of power in finishing the sentence, “I know I’m done when . . .”
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, we navigate the question: what do I build next? Or, is it a good idea to build this thing next? Today, we splice up these questions and what they actually mean for you, your business, and your life.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, we talk about legacy. We all know the attitude of “I’ll have fun once I retire.” Many have the same attitude toward leaving a legacy: that it’s about the end game. Today, we talk about how leaving a legacy is living a legacy.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I discuss leadership and how you can be confident in thinking about leadership as a necessary skill rather than something to avoid. Often, with negative past experiences under bad bosses, it can be easy to hesitate when leading.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, let’s talk about those thoughts that you have the most often but aren’t the most helpful. These might be thoughts that have been coming up for a while or might leak into other areas of your life. I ask you today, what are the least fruitful thoughts that you have the most often?
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, let’s talk about those goals that seem ridiculous and incredulous when they come to mind. These are goals that have nothing to do with money or business but that you want—and think are nonsensical. Let’s shift those “eye-roll” goals to “Let’s do it” goals.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I ask you this: how expensive is the money you invest in your assets? It’s easy to assume that we can’t change our income and money management, yet we have full flexibility to manage those variables. Which is more expensive to invest: money that you can pay back in small amounts over time or hard-earned cash?
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, we talk about grounding yourself and ways to healthily close those stress cycles. It’s no secret that being an entrepreneur will bring you stress. The bad news is that this stress also lives in your body, not just your mind. The good news? We have control over our bodies and can take control of releasing that stress.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, we talk about taking time off—not just any time off but restoring your mind and body with sabbaticals. For many of us, it’s hard to imagine stepping away from our work for a while. Today, I want to discuss how there’s no one required way of taking a sabbatical and that doing so is not an ‘all or nothing’ endeavor.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, let’s talk about fast cash. We’ve all been there and will all be there. As entrepreneurs, we all need a cash injection from time to time—but sometimes, our brains get in the way and we forget that we have lots of ways to access money quickly.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I tell you about the do-tell cycle so that you can do your best at mastering this in your life and business. How often are you doing? How often are you telling? Do you balance between the two? Let’s talk about it.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, we talk about leadership. Some practice model leadership while others practice beacon leadership. A leader could tell another to follow exactly what they do—or they could light the way for someone to steer their own boat. Today, we talk about why beacon leadership matters.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I give you some tips on managing your inbox that could save you over two and a half years of your time. Let’s say you’re in a romantic relationship with your inbox. How would you describe it? Is it toxic? Today, we look at healthy ways to approach this communication tool.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, let’s talk about your product. What do you make? What is your product? Today, I talk about how entrepreneurs are different from small business owners—and how your employees are actually your customers.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, we talk about being unwilling. That is, instead of telling yourself that you ‘can’t’ do something, substitute that word with ‘unwilling’ and the result is powerful. Today, I want you to ask yourself this: where am I unwilling and where do I want to be unwilling?
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I ask you to redefine profitability. Today, I explain how and why shifting how your approach to the idea of profitability is going to make you a whole lot of money. When we think ‘profitability,’ we think cash money—but the right idea is so much more. The key question here is this: do you believe in multidimensional profitability?
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I talk about relationships with money and the stories we tell ourselves about it. Today, I explain why money isn’t the bad guy and how to look at money as a tool rather than something to blame. I suggest evaluating and asking yourself: how has blaming my money stopped me from doing the next thing? Then, you can shift the narrative and reach for your goals.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, we discuss envisioning our near future and what that can tell us about ourselves. If you close your eyes and think about what you want next for yourself and your career, what do you see?
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, let’s look at managing your assets as a stewardship. Everyone has their limits—but not everyone knows them. Today I want you to ask yourself: what is my stewardship threshold?
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, we’re talking about delegation. Maybe we delegate tasks and they’re not done how we want. Maybe, we often think we could just do them better ourselves. Delegation is a skill and today I want you to ask yourself: do I know how to delegate?
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, we’re talking money. How do you make money? My friend asked me just that the other day and I shared a few things with them. What did I come up with? Making money comes down to two things: belief and action.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, let’s think about making binary decisions—and how often, we could consider a third and fourth option too.
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I want you to think about why you want to hire someone new. We often want immediate relief in business for particular assets—but creating a new role is often not the best solution. Today, I want you to ask yourself, “Who is the most valuable hire?”
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I ask you to explore what solving problems in a vulnerable mental state is like for you. Sometimes, when we’re going through lots of growth and making big decisions, we may need some direction to ensure that our impact follows our intention. My question for you today is: have you ever noticed how your thinking changes when you’re vulnerable?
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, we talk about expanding your business. Businesses can expand gradually over time but here, I want you to think in the present and the near future. This isn’t a call or a challenge but a question: what would it take to double your business in two years?
In this episode of 30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I talk about the idea of ambient stress and how entrepreneurs can get started on understanding themselves and their stress. There are lots of specific things that can stress us out but today, I want to ask you one main question: what processes, if fixed, would lower our ambient stress the most?
In this episode of 30k questions, a podcast miniseries aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I want to explore with you the reasons why we might wait on firing people, what we should do to get to that place and go over what we need to notice about ourselves throughout the process. It’s a difficult but necessary question and I ask you to think: why haven’t you fired them yet?
In this episode of $30k questions, a podcast mini-series aimed to help you explore and implement money-making questions, I’m asking you to think: are you engaging in high-quality or low-quality conflict most of the time? We know that conflict is a given—but it’s the type of conflict that matters. Today, we explore how you can engage in high-quality conflict that creates a better outcome for everyone
This week, I kick off 30k Questions: a podcast miniseries worth well over 900 thousand dollars. Each day for 30 days, I’m going to be posing a new set of questions to you that, if explored and implemented, could net you well over 30 thousand dollars over the lifetime of your entrepreneurship career. In this episode, I prompt you to think about a difficult question: “What would you do if your business collapsed tomorrow?
Tis' the season... to be experiencing the emotional state of overwhelm! Instead of trying to teach you how to avoid it or erase it (lol), I want to invite you to think differently about experiencing this state.

A timely playback of one of our most popular series from December 2021.
This is Note to Self, a series of mini-lessons from two high-impact entrepreneurs to their former, present and future selves. Expanding off of last week’s concept of confidence regression, my co-host Nicola and I break down what makes the holidays so stressful for entrepreneurs and how to set boundaries with loved ones during this busy season.
In this mini-lesson, we cover:
“In that moment, that’s your family trying to show care, but they don't really know how to do it. We don't have enough conversations on how best to support and add care.” - Nicola
“Practice grounded appreciation and gratitude, and be specific to small things, things you wholeheartedly feel gratitude and appreciation for.” - Hailey
Welcome to One Year from Now: The Podcast – the show that supports high-impact entrepreneurs in turning their desires & dreams into clear, compelling vision and then actually bringing it all into reality.
I’m your host, Hailey Thomas, entrepreneurship coach, parent, tedx speaker, adventure and all around smart ass. :)
And this show is brought to you by One Year from Now: The Residency, the 12-month life + business incubator for high-impact entrepreneurs. This is the training ground for turning those desires and dreams into reality. We support you you through sound business strategy and trauma-informed coaching to help you increase your business proficiency and mental/emotional maturity so that you’re actually able to build the life that you want.
For example:
H paid off over $200k of personal debt
while relocating and traveling the region
with her small family and working 15 fewer
hours each week.
This sounds like it was built for your next season? Then head to https://www.instagram.com/oyfn.co/ and click the link in the bio. There you’ll find all Residency enrollment details and be able to subscribe to the podcast, get on the email list and access free trainings.
This week, we're playing 2 truths and a lie with the OYFN vision. Why?
Because like all metacognition tools – this is one you can just as easily use against yourself. You can twist any of these truths or the lie into a weapon to tell yourself you aren’t doing it right, that you’re a failure, that it didn’t work and you need to try something else.
None of that is the case. It’s about rightly seeing the exercise for what it is – not a magic lamp, a compass, target and guide that you create for yourself to help give you direction in a career and lifestyle that can be fairly directionless if we don’t create our own structure for it.
The Truths:
And the Lie:
You’ve “not made any progress” if you are in a season of famine if you did this exercise this time last year.
Tune in to hear all the details!
PS: If you are a high-impact entrepreneur, I want to officially invite you to become a OYFN resident. I am actively looking for the strangest, most purposeful entrepreneurs I can find. All business models and industries are welcome.
I want to work with the folks who know DEEPLY that they are meant to do big things in the world. But have found themselves stuck and want specific high–touch, high-quality support.
If this is resonating, you can go to instagram.com/oyfn.co and click the link that says “Work with me: OYFN the Residency” and get all the details on enrollment, the investment, how to apply, what kind of results residents are creating, all of it. You can apply by filling out the application and scheduling a 60 minute application time. See yo on the inside.
Popping in for a quick update on all things OYFN. And because I am always extra, there are gifs to illustrate each item.
Here we go!!
| God I love this GIF and I am 100% team Ross. Perhaps due to my need for regular breaks? |
#1: The podcast is going on a break! I'm going to be busy recording close to 10 new episodes for the podcast in the next few weeks. I am focusing on making sure the content is effective and speaks to the challenges you all are actually having (vs trying to focus on sticking to a production schedule which is not one of my strong suits). As such, we're taking a break until early October.
Future episodes will very likely include:
Want to be a part of the live episode recordings? I'm going to be sending invites here, to the list to join me for live podcast episode recordings! You can ask questions and get coaching on these topics as they come fresh off the press! Details forthcoming - stay on the list to get the invites.
Looking for old episodes to give a re-listen? I'd recommend you start with episodes #79, #49 or #91
| Live footage from the convo between OYFN and BSO |
#2: One Year from Now is splitting off from the parent company, BrainSpace Optimized! (at least, branding wise) I will still retain BSO (both because it speaks to the thing all my businesses do - optimize people's brain space but also because I paid $2,500 for a naming company to come up with that for me almost 5 years ago and I'm never giving it up), but it will house my other projects and business ideas. One Year from Now gets to be its own living breathing creature; replete with a new domain name, instagram handle and all.
While all of the change is happening behinds the scenes, you can click here(the link in my IG bio) to find resources like the OYFN Workbook, the video guide on How to Feel Your Feelings and to check out the most recent podcast episodes. You can also find out the details on the retooled residency experience!

I’m excited to announce the details for my upcoming virtual event, One Year from Now: The Sleepover. Held on Friday, August 19th from 8pm to 11pm central time, join me in your pajamas and get comfy as we do some late-night coaching, bonding, and movie watching! In addition to talking about the Sleepover, I spend this episode walking through the idea of creation through action, inviting you to consider that the reason something is taking so long is that you’re thinking instead of actioning.

I got a little bit ranty about the W-2 this week, but not in the way you might think! We have a gross stigma around entrepreneurs having W-2 jobs or taking W-2 opportunities, but fail to recognize the positives of those situations and acknowledge that a W-2 is simply just another revenue stream. Being an entrepreneur is so much more than a job title, and your identity as an entrepreneur shouldn’t mean that you can never work a W-2 again.

This week, we talk about grief, but not the type that happens when someone dies. Growth grief is the cacophony of emotions experienced at the end of one chapter of your business. Whether you’re moving away from a partnership or embracing a new path in your entrepreneurial journey, our bodies and brains will process this change and grieve, no matter how often we claim we “don’t have time for it.” Even if the change is welcomed, space for grieving is necessary!

I’m doing something a little different this week by bringing the concept of Hailey After Hours to the podcast. Less filtered, more direct, Hailey After Hours is a much more casual, vulnerable version of my podcast and of my coaching strategy. Because I’m able to tell it like it is with Hailey After Hours, I talk about the phrase, “I don’t have any money,” and how frustrating it is to hear when I know my clients mean something else when they say that.
Timecoded Guide:
In this episode, I cover…
I invited One Year from Now: The Residency program facilitator and Certified OBM, Jacki Hayes, to the podcast to talk about our mid-sesson live event for Cohort One of The Residency. Jacki, myself, and my five Residents saw the best of the Midwest at Camp Aramoni, a boutique campground in Illinois. We experienced nature, ate 5-star meals, and learned beyond the restrictions of Zoom. In this episode, Jacki and I do a live recap and evaluation, including what worked, what didn’t work, and what we learned.

This is a quick note to share that there are limited 1:1 coaching spots available to work with me this fall (3 left at the time of recording to be exact)!
TLDL; for a limited time, I’m taking on a few short-term, 1:1 coaching clients. The goal is to move you to your next, most powerful (financially, creatively, vocally) iteration of yourself.
It is a 4 month commitment and the cost is a single payment of $10k. This is the best fit for high-impact, high-profit entrepreneurs who have specific money + business goals they want to knock out of the park by the end of the year along with new identity/title/role shifts that they want to accelerate. This is all about transitioning to your next iteration.
You can email me directly to get started (hailey@brainspaceoptimized.com) or visit https://calendly.com/haileythomas/1on1 to find a time. The first step is a 60-minute Zoom conversation to assess fit and away we go!
In this episode, I'm coming at you without the permission of my editing team. :) After two weeks of leading my clients and learning from my own mentor
Entrepreneurship has no map but you can create your own guidebook
Success patterns help you answer the question, "How do I know my success is inevitable?"
Leveraging success patterns in times of distress and times of growth
What data points make up success patterns? (Thoughts, feelings, actions, decisions and defaults/habits)
How to start your own guidebook of success patterns, start backwards! Ask yourself, "how do I know I'm already the next version of me from a year ago?"
-Defining success data points (counter-intuitive, lead indicators, trade short-term relief for long-term inevitably, cultivated, regenerative and exponential.
I’m joined by friend and fellow mastermind participant, Emilia Makówka, to talk about their entrepreneurial journey as a queer neurodivergent money and life coach in Poland. With recent appearances in Newsweek and in a collaboration with Ikea, Emilia shares their experience embracing visibility with their own needs in mind, decentralizing their professional life from their personal life, and previewing their brand new mastermind for queer and neurodivergent humans they plan to launch within the next year.
Timecoded Guide:
In this episode, Emilia and I cover…
This week, I define the concept of visibility anxiety after having 3 separate clients bring up this feeling. While anxiety is often a normal part of our lives, visibility anxiety comes from a heightened awareness of new eyes on us in a new way, whether it’s quantity of eyes or the quality of someone’s view. From high profile interviews to probing questions from friends, avoiding the cyclone of visibility anxiety will help you live a successful entrepreneurial life without unnecessary stress and fatigue.

I invited a friend of mine, Abe Lopez-Bowen, to the podcast this week to talk about his journey into entrepreneurship. As an artist, photographer, and managing partner at Lightward, Abe can showcase a huge variety of skills that have undoubtedly led him to success, but his perspective on business and his synchronicity with his business and romantic partner, Isaac, shows an incredible maturity and a desire to build something sustainable at their own professional pace.

What is the highest quality decision you can make in this situation? After posing this question to a client in The Residency, I realized a large majority of my work revolves around helping my clients, whether in one-on-one coaching or in The Residency, learn how to make high quality decisions. Using this specific client as an example, I spend this episode breaking down why her decision was the highest quality for her and how to prioritize what’s most important during your next big decision.

What if you could be the future you right now? This week is all about forming that connection to your future self and asking that question of your current self. On One Year From Now and in numerous coaching environments I participate in, we talk about our future self a lot, but I want to help you bring your future self closer and closer to present day you with thoughtful practice.
Timecoded Guide:
In this episode, I cover:
This week, I expose my beef with the phrase “some day,” and fight against the concept that time passing gets you closer to your goals. With my own trip to Key West becoming a reality, I invite you on my journey from “some day” lies and bucket list wishes to real commitments about creativity and action for myself and my business.
Timecoded Guide:
In this episode, I cover:
In this short episode, I explain the real pathway to successful business and personal ventures through prioritizing intention and cultivating self-trust. Instead of enforcing harsher restrictions on yourself and playing into a toxic “hustle” mindset, I challenge you to seek creative problem solving opportunities and practice taking risks.
In this episode, I cover:
This week, I’m joined by Damaly Shepherd, an NYC-based photographer and entrepreneur headed for $500K in revenue this year. From a background similar to my own as an HR recruiter, she has built a successful portrait and branding photography business with an emphasis on next-level experiences for her clients. As a black, female first-generation entrepreneur, Damaly shares with me how her clients, team, and business are centered around BIPOC experiences and gives me a sneak peek at her One Year from Now vision. Back in March, I experienced a zero dollar launch that taught me so much about my business, myself, and my newest offering, The Residency. After a successful Cohort One, I feared the negative result that ended up being the unfortunate reality for The Residency: Cohort Two. I discuss this $0 launch in this episode to normalize failure, reveal what can be learned from an unprofitable launch, and give myself a moment to return to one year from now as a reminder of just how far Hailey and The Residency have come.
Timecode guide:
I’m joined by Doreen Korba, a life coach for entrepreneurs who centers her skills on helping women grow successful businesses on their own terms. Breaking down the concept of a “Quantum Leap” together, Doreen and I discuss the best conditions to experience a quantum leap in your own business, as well as reveal how these conditions have more to do with your inner world than your marketing strategy or your work schedule.
Timecoded Guide:
In this episode, Doreen and I cover:
I interview Founder and CEO of Factora, Allegra Brantly, about how she’s evolved as a CEO alongside of her financial education platform, Factora, all the way through her first $1M AR. With a mission to support women in their quest to be financially stable and successful, Factora offers a wealth circle learning experience that I’ve previously participated in, and Allegra gives me insight into what future offerings from Factora will look like, including a potential membership to their wealth community.
In this episode, Allegra and I cover:
I met up with Modern Marriage Coach Maggie Reyes this week to talk about the challenges and success first-generation entrepreneurs face in their marriages. As an author, coach, and married woman herself, Maggie gave me incredible insights into her coaching process and the essential communication framework she uses with all of her clients.
In this podcast, Maggie and I cover:
I celebrate 100 episodes this week with a discussion about cultivating the intention of building highly profitable and highly impactful business assets. Using a previous free session I hosted through my email list as an example, I compile and explain 5 thought errors and skill gaps that prevent you from reaching the coveted million dollars in revenue.
In this episode, I cover:
This week, I share 10 facets of the Career Entrepreneur self-concept and invite listeners to try on these thoughts for themselves. Similar to a previously discussed self-concept of Battle Queen, a Career Entrepreneur is someone who is probably never going to be a W2 employee ever again in their careers and is actively choosing to build a life as an entrepreneur.
In this episode, I cover:
I invite Eunice Martel, a Whole Life Coach currently enrolled in The Residency, to talk about her journey from waitressing to entrepreneurship and how she has switched her mindset to focus on making decisions with her legacy in mind. Known as someone who does what she wants to do, Eunice tells me about the audacity she has to make the decisions that need to be made and to take a chance on the adventures in life as well.
In this podcast, Eunice and I cover:
I invite Rebecca Fralick, a current member of my first cohort of One Year From Now: The Residency and well-rounded food entrepreneur, to talk with me about her experience so far in the program, her journey into entrepreneurship, the inspiration she received from her family, and how she unites her entrepreneurship and food skills to give back to her community.
In this episode, Rebecca and I cover:
I met up with my former client, Christina Heath, to talk about her journey from corporate layoff to project management entrepreneur. This week, we dive deep in the hardest parts of the w2 to entrepreneur transition, including revenge success, comments from others, relationship strains, and parenting woes, and explain how it’s all worth it in the end for the incredible experience of working for yourself.
In this episode, Christina and I cover:
Revenge Success is a drive to succeed fueled by spite. If we're completely honest with ourselves, we’ve all used this motivator from time to time— myself included. However, it doesn’t have to be a bad thing. In this episode, I define revenge success, explain when and why it might be helpful for you (and for me, too), and how to fuel the transition away from revenge success in order to better sustain your long-term entrepreneurial journey.
In this episode, I cover:
I’m joined by Megan Baker, CEO and Founder of MegKCo, to cover the essentials of your first permanent hire and what that looks like from a perspective of diversity and equity. MegKCo’s specialty is helping socially conscious online business owners during every step of the hiring process and Megan takes her time to walk through those steps with me so my listeners can better understand how to navigate the difficult journey of small business hiring.
In this episode, Megan and I cover:
In 2020, a client of mine inspired the concept of the Armor of Excellence, a way of using excellence as means of protection or safety. As tough and protective as armor may seem, it can also be extremely heavy and restrictive, preventing us from doing all that we might want to do and keeping us rigidly meeting someone else’s standards.
In this episode, I cover:
The start of a new year is all about reflection and growth, and I kick off my 2022 with a reflection on my past year in my coaching business. Through transparency in both my numbers and my process, I show you what I assumed and what I learned about this past year as a business owner, as well as explain how you can go about mapping out some reflections for yourself so that we can begin a prosperous 2022 together.
In this episode, I cover:
For our final Note to Self, Nicola and I discuss the essential rhythms of our lives, the outside factors that can impact our rhythms, and how we can best optimize them through personal boundaries to produce higher quality levels of joy and care.
In this mini-lesson, we cover:
I used to think the concept of “enough” made people soft-- and for a good reason. At the time, the thought that I didn’t have “enough” kept me safe by keeping me moving. It kept me out of despair and into action. Now, as I move through multiple six-figures, it’s no longer a helpful thought. I do have enough, at least for now, and I want to help you unlock that belief, too.
In this episode, I cover:
In this Note to Self, Nicola and I encourage entrepreneurs to seek collaborative partnership opportunities with other businesses in their industry and to understand their value as agile, skilful individuals with experience taking risks.
In this mini-lesson, we cover:
This week, I explain “self-concepts” and the massive impact they can have on our mindset, thoughts, and actions. As we head towards a time of reflection in the new year, I reflect on my own self-concept: the Battle Queen, and how embodying a strong, graceful, and confident mindset has helped me on my entrepreneurial journey.
In this episode, I cover:
This is Note to Self, a series of mini-lessons from two high-impact entrepreneurs to their former, present and future selves. As entrepreneurs ourselves, my co-host Nicola and I understand how genuinely triggering entrepreneurship and business ownership can be to our nervous system, and set out to find a way to cope with that in this week’s episode.
In this mini-lesson, we cover:
After experiencing a 6-month group coaching mastermind, I developed a higher understanding of the importance of a well-structured group, what it meant to be involved in an advanced room, and how to best take advantage of the opportunities that presents to us as entrepreneurs. With my own group coaching session, One Year From Now: The Residency, quickly approaching in the new year, I wanted to explain 10 rules I have practiced myself so that you can get the most out of any advanced room you find yourself in.
This is Note to Self, a series of mini-lessons from two high-impact entrepreneurs to their former, present and future selves. Through the lens of the work of Dr. Saundra Dalton Smith, my co-host Nicola and I discuss the importance of rest and the solidified place it needs to have as a part of your life as an entrepreneur.
In this mini-lesson, we cover:
I revisit a past episode (#51) to give an update on my views about cash flow, debt, and the place that these two things have in entrepreneurship. Instead of letting negative thoughts and fearful perceptions of money control your business and your goals around profitability, consider the in-and-out relationship of cash flow as a normal part of early business ownership and first generation entrepreneurship.
In this episode, I cover:
This is Note to Self, a series of mini-lessons from two high-impact entrepreneurs to their former, present and future selves. Expanding off of last week’s concept of confidence regression, my co-host Nicola and I break down what makes the holidays so stressful for entrepreneurs and how to set boundaries with loved ones during this busy season.

This is Note to Self, a series of mini-lessons from two high-impact entrepreneurs to their former, present and future selves. Grab your sticky notes and listen up. This week, my co-host Nicola and I talk about resilience and the role it has in our nonlinear journey of confidence.
In this mini-lesson, we cover:
I’m joined by client and friend Heather O’Neill, the CEO and Strategic Partner for tech consulting + UX firm, Pixels for Humans, to talk about hiring, firing, and managing micro-teams. With over 20 years of experience in her field, Heather prides herself on her ability to help business owners grow their companies while maintaining the values most important to them and shares with me the many lessons she’s learned about growing and developing strong small business teams.
In this episode, Heather and I cover:

I share my answer to the question: What results are you clients guaranteed to get and how do you know? Using my One Year From Now: The Residency program as an example, I walk through the essentials of structure and process, and how they work together to build the guaranteed results I promise to each client within the program.
In this episode, I cover:
I talk about my top tenets for launching a new product, digital or otherwise, and discuss how to correctly set expectations, whether this is your first launch or your fifteenth. Often we want plans that are more complex than necessary and don't focus on the right parts of the process when performing a product launch. Feel free to use this episode as a guide to help you think through making the transition from service-focused businesses to products.
In this podcast, I cover:
I talk with co-owners of Speakerbox Media and producers of the One Year From Now podcast, Ray and Sarah Smith, about their journey in entrepreneurship together and growing the suite of services and products within their podcast production company.
In this podcast, Sarah and Ray cover:

* Separating yourself from the value of your services
Becoming comfortable with the discomfort of raising prices
The first of a 12 part series where Hailey shares her asset-building journey. This month we're learning about VC funding and how entrepreneurs like Shaan Puri and Codie Sanchez think.
In this episode, I ask a simple question - what is the quality of your thoughts, ideas and solutions? It's not enough to go through the motions - quality matters.
"Marketing" seems to be a scary word in the online business world - some people believe you either have the magic or you don't... But in this episode I'm breaking down how I view marketing and where I see people struggle the most, it's not with their Instagram stories, it's their thoughts about marketing that are making things harder than they should be.
Building your business is 100% dependent on the thoughts you have about yourself, your product/service, and your clients. You need to have confidence, trust, and belief in all three to successfully make sales and serve people well.
This is your main job. Everything else (where you decide to market, what exactly your website says, your “funnel”) is secondary. All those pieces are we can test, edit and adjust to serve your goals the best.
But we get nowhere without your deep commitment to believing powerful, action-spurring thoughts about you, your clients, and your offers.
Sometimes we think hiring someone into our business is going to solve a lot more than it does. I'm walking through 4 scenarios where hiring is NOT the answer to the challenge you're having and 4 ways you can prepare as a CEO to make sure it is a great experience for you (and the person you hire!).
You don’t have to love being in debt or having low cashflow. But you do need to increase your tolerance for these very real parts of business ownership and decrease their impact on your decision making.
Hailey breaks down the outcomes you can expect from each of these tools, the differences and how to get what you need from every investment you make.
What's a first-generation entrepreneur & what does it mean for you? Hailey explores the common thread between her clients, no matter if they're making their first $10k or their first $500k. These 7 challenges create extra pressure and a whole host of problems that stop you from being successful and enjoying your ownership experience.
Most people come to coaching with a revenue goal and want to know A) when they'll hit their goal and B) exactly how long that will take. Hailey gives an answer to this question in the form of an example.... from Fast & Furious franchise.
Hailey reviews her business & revenue goals written in 2019, how they played out/shifted dramatically in 2020 and what the plan is for her business in 2021.
In this episode, Hailey goes over her "must-haves" or any goal-setting framework she uses in her life and talks about how to frame goal setting so that it doesn't create unnecessary drama.
In this episode, Hailey breaks down ReFuel, her 6-month coaching experience for women who want to stop being thwarted by survival-mode habits and actually enjoy the experience of being a profitable business owner.
Setting and achieving goals is like running a marathon. There are cheering and fanfare in the beginning and at the end, but hardly anyone prepares you for the hardest part... There are 5 negative emotions that come up in the middle of goal achievement and guess what... they're supposed to!
Self-Coaching is a mental hygiene habit. Small actions that lead to loads of awareness and helps you stay the course.
This week, Hailey slows down to be your guide through a simple, effective self-coaching routine that you can do to independently guide yourself towards your goals.

Natalie Keifer started her journey in online business as a virtual assistant and grew her business successfully. This is the story of her transition from VA to CEO of a digital agency.
While there's no single path for every individual, the practice of thriving is available to each of us. Nicola and I define thriving and how to create your recipe for it. Nicola shares where her startup, Koroko helps and what is next for the business.
In this episode Voice Actor, Melanie Scroggins talks about how she's rapidly grown her business after experiencing several coaching breakthroughs back in March.
We often describe clarity and confidence as something that happens to us. We feel or experience it as a result of something external. But I think that POV is pretty useless. It keeps us from being in charge of our own results (being clear on a strategy or your offering is the result here). So let’s think about clarity and as a deliberate practice. Something you have control over and create for yourself.
What if, instead of planning what we want 5 or 10 years down the line, we focus on what we want one year from now? This is the question that entrepreneur, Hailey Thomas, has built her system of career coaching around. In this episode, Hailey is joined by Emmaline Chappell, a personal stylist who specializes in helping entrepreneurial women with individualizing their wardrobe and look. In this episode, Hailey and Emmaline discuss the coaching sessions that they’ve gone through together and how they built confidence in their personal brands.
Figuring out what you’re really doing
One of Emmaline’s biggest entrepreneurial barriers before she started on her coaching journey with Hailey was her lack of confidence in explaining what she does and who she helps. This is considered the essential “elevator pitch” in networking, and not being able to articulate what you do makes it difficult to find the right clients. As a part of her work with Hailey, Emmaline focused on finding out more about who she is and what her goals, both big and small, look like. This has paid off tenfold in her case, as she’s seen a great increase in her number of clients since her coaching session in June.
“I felt like I had a blindfold on all the time of just like, what am I doing? What are the words? How am I going to get there?”
Reorienting your views about the future
Success doesn’t always look or feel like we think it’s going to. When first entering the world of business, especially when running your own, you may find yourself believing that success should always feel good. However, the work that goes into that success can feel really hard, and those hard feelings can become worse when we set our goals for the future at unrealistic standards. Instead, when we analyze what we’re doing and break down how we’re thinking about each individual goal, we can change how we look at our future and manage our expectations so that we can find those good feelings.
“[Coaching] made me realize that everyday I would wake up and just go and do stuff, but I would never sit and really focus and analyze the skeleton of my business.”
Understanding when you need professional help
Entrepreneurs often believe that they have to do everything themselves. It’s easy to fall into the trap of everyday routine and fail to realize that you don’t have to struggle alone. Professional career coaches like Hailey exist for a reason; to lift up entrepreneurs and encourage them to reach their full potential as business owners. For Emmaline, this process involves giving her the tools to embrace what she does, to feel secure in her business practices and decisions, and to reach out to the people that need her services the most.
“I think that it helps to just talk to someone who gets you, who knows who you are as an entrepreneur and will help you create the best career roadmap.”

Hailey is joined by Essence Turner, a radical forgiveness and self-love coach, for a special extended conversation about emotions and feelings. In this episode, Essence gives Hailey and her listeners a valuable lesson about where our feelings come from, why they matter, and how we can all strive to feel our feelings productively.
This episode discusses topics like:
Understanding how feelings fit into our lives
Throughout Essence’s life, she has struggled with the trauma she experienced at a young age and the abandonment issues that this trauma gave her. It wasn’t until she realized just how deep these emotions were affecting her entire life that she understood what her true calling was. Working through her own emotional issues first, Essence honed her knowledge on how emotions and feelings genuinely impact every single aspect of our lives, and now she is able to channel that knowledge into helping other women overcome their own struggle with trauma and emotional immaturity.
“Feelings are a real true part of our human experience.”
Balancing the different versions of yourself
Essence follows the mindset that there are four different versions of ourselves that we need to balance and pay attention to. Our mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional self. These four different selves represent different aspects of our life, health, relationships, and work, and they can all impact one another when oneself gets too much attention or another self falls into neglect. For many women, their mental self reigns supreme, telling them to ignore other aspects of themselves, especially their emotional self.
“Your mental self can damage your relationship to the other parts of yourself because she’s always putting her two cents in.”
Showing up for your emotions
If we bottle up our emotions and our feelings, we will never be able to understand them or heal from them. Essence believes that it is only through giving ourselves the time to let the emotions we’re feeling wash over us that we actually can build our emotional maturity and show up for ourselves. Through blocking out time to feel these emotions, we can stop restricting our emotional self, learn to process our trauma, and build a stronger foundation for our future feelings to be expressed.
“If you give yourself over to the tears and just be with them, they’re going to move through you and wash over you just like an ocean wave. When you resist it, it’s gonna stick.”
Learning when to let go
Just like learning to feel, we also have to learn to let go of our feelings when they no longer serve us. Processing the emotions we feel can take a long time, but when the time is right, these feelings need to be allowed to be set free. Essence firmly stands by the idea that each emotion should be like a visitor, stopping by for a while to see you and then leaving when they no longer need to stay.
“Any emotions are welcome to visit me, no emotion is welcome to set their bags down and take root and take over.”

This week, I wanted to share some of my thoughts on things I've seen with my clients when it comes to finding and setting up accountability. Most people need outer accountability and guess what - it’s okay! This episode I share insight and observation about the role accountability plays in goal execution as a small business owner. Most people are what Gretchen Rubin would call “Obligers". They respond well to external accountability (client deadlines, team needs, etc.) but struggle with internal accountability.

Today, Mel and I are taking over the podcast and talking to you about worktreats! What is a worktreat? Why would someone need one?
We're going to cover all of the basic questions and more today on the show.
A worktreat, or working retreat: time for CEOs to reflect, plan, and execute on high level priorities.
When we talk about CEOs, we're talking about people that own service-based or product-based businesses that may work by themselves or with a small team. Someone who has moved out of "I'm the doer" to "I'm the leader with more responsibilities".
This week, we're talking to cartoonist and creative mentor, Jessica Abel - founder of the Creative Focus Workshop. She works with ambitious mid-career creative pros and businesses to escape the hamster wheel of busyness and carve out the deep focus needed to finish—and launch—the game-changing work they want to be known for.
Jessica is the author of Growing Gills: How to Find Creative Focus When You're Drowning in Your Daily Life, the graphic novel La Perdida, and two textbooks about making comics, Drawing Words & Writing Pictures and Mastering Comics. Her book Out on the Wire is about how the best radio and podcast producers in the world use story to keep us listening. Jessica’s latest work of fiction is the Eisner-nominated Trish Trash: Rollergirl of Mars. She is chair of the illustration program at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

In this episode, I have a conversation with Natasha Vorompiova over at Systems Rock, about doing less for bigger wins in business. Now before you go rolling your eyes and move on to another episode, we get it. Do less. Delegate. give it away. It's all overused and simplified business advice that gurus just love to give. Mainly because it's easy to say and there is some grain of truth to it. Doing less allows you to focus your efforts and go further in a single direction. But what's not normally talked about is that it usually costs both you and your business something to make that transition. Usually it costs time, revenue, and some mental strength on your part. The reality of doing less can be challenging and painful for a business owner who's just experienced the high of a growth season. So in this episode, Natasha and I set out to normalize the pain that comes with implementing a do less mentality. We talk about the signals in your business and team that tell you when it might be time to reevaluate your systems, and where you as a CEO need to start. We also talk about how to prepare your business for those changes so that you can be proactive instead of reactive to them. Natasha is a systems expert, but even she believes that the most successful transition of a CEO who wants to "do less", more focused work comes down to their willingness to be proactive about that transition. Need a refresh? Get in touch with me about a customized worktreat for you and your team.
Today's guest has spent the last three years purposefully experimenting with risk and reward in her business. Stephanie Stiavetti is an online cooking teacher on a mission to change the relationship that her students have with cooking. She helps them to go from hopeless and fearful to confident kitchen ninjas.
As you'll hear in our conversation, there are so many lessons and learning to be a competent cook that directly apply to running a business. In this episode, Stephanie and I talked about risk taking play, learning to trust yourself, perfectionism, and the smoky way in which Stephanie helps her students learn these lessons. The conversation is a great balance to last week's episode about the data and more technical parts of experimentation. This week, we're looking at the core of your business - YOU!
Where do you want to be 90 days from now? Take the assessment.
This week we're chatting with business coach, Luisa Zhou. Luisa has an incredible coaching business built on the idea of helping everyone become a little bit more entrepreneurial. Whether it be by transitioning out of your corporate job and starting your own business, or staying in your 9-5 and creating a course to help you share your expertise, she has got you covered.
Luisa is internet famous in the online business world for her multi six-figure launches and building a seven-figure business, but often not talked about is how she was able to do it. It comes down to her ability to experiment and test with intention. She has done that by creating a business that makes room for trying and failing, keeping her team nice and lean, and preparing herself mentally for failure.
Where do you want to be 90 days from now? Take the assessment.
This week, we're chatting with financial strategist Iyanna Vaughn of Lovely Financials Group. Iyanna helps six and seven figure business owners understand their finances and then use that data to make strategic business decisions. We all know we're supposed to be looking at our numbers and tracking things like revenue, profit, and costs of service, but most of us have at least some, if not a whole lot of holes, in tracking these and other important data points. Even though we know it helps us make better decisions and more money, it's a place that can cause a lot of anxiety with small business owners. In this episode, Iyanna and I talked about how emotional junk, like fear and shame, can affect how we manage the finances of our businesses, and she gives some examples of how she was able to increase revenue for her business this year by 66%. Thanks to her regular review of her important metrics. She also shares some simple guidelines for how and what when you start tracking your numbers in the beginning. What I love most about Iyanna is her down to earth attitude and her straightforward approach to managing business finances. Hopefully, this episode inspires you to update your data tracking processes, and start viewing your weekly metric reviews as something that helps you make better business decisions, and not just to something you have to do. --------

Today, we're talking to THE Val Geisler of Fix Your Churn about the many iterations her business has undergone over the years from being a general virtual assistant to one of the top authorities on customer retention for subscription based businesses. I love Val's story because it's a case study on a variety of the transitions that a business can undergo in a short amount of time, but also about the real implications of iterating in your business for you as a human for that context of you and your family, and the overall scheme or scope of your career.
Today, we're having an open and down to earth conversation about a pretty serious topic. We're talking about trauma and how it affects your relationship with your business. My guest, Nicole Lewis-Keeber, is a licensed therapist and social worker turned business coach.
She focuses on the way Small T trauma (we'll talk about Small T and Big T trauma) can deeply affect the businesses we choose to build and how we show up to them. This is a sensitive topic and can be a scary topic, but I think so few people are talking about the connection between our past experiences and what we're creating with our work.
Nicole helps us see that we are not our businesses but instead are in relationship with our businesses. That distinction allows us to create healthier relationships that are financially successful and emotionally stable instead of relationships that are strewn with toxic patterns of behavior.
Today, I'm chatting with Luz Donahue. Luz is an accomplished abstract painter and a really accomplished Facebook ads consultant. Two topics, which, on the face of things, seem to be at odds with each other. Today, Luz shares her story of becoming an entrepreneur and how she goes about nourishing both sides of her business: one that requires great analysis and one that requires great levels of creativity.

Today, I'm chatting with Heather Hawkins of Elevation Strategy, a PR agency that focuses on solopreneurs and personal brands. I'll admit, I was totally not up to speed with how much momentum and reach is available to us solopreneurs through PR and traditional media outlets. In the world of social and building your own platforms, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that there is still a lot of power in utilizing those existing outlets and networks to grow your business in the way you want to. During our conversation, Heather busts some myths around the difficulty of public relations, she shares her simple system for getting up and running and explains the power in leveraging public relations for developing a future proof brand.
Today, we're chatting with Blake Thomas, Director of Engineering at No Red Ink. Blake has had a long career in technology, and the reason I want to share Blake with this community is that he is really practiced at making calculated career decisions. What does this mean for people who work for themselves? Well, it's easy to be business-centric and forget about the career we want and are crafting for ourselves through our business. We don't always have answers to the questions of what do I want to learn next? and what do I want to be creating? If you are in this for the long haul, it's important that you know what you want to learn and how you want to grow so you can thrive going forward and understand how you are crafting a career through your business.
