Pima County Supervisor Rex Scott spoke at the August 22, 2022, meeting of Democrats of Greater Tucson. Supervisor Scott is leading a challenge to the state law blocking local control of firearms. If the “guns everywhere” law isn’t revoked, the County will ask a court to have it declared unconstitutional.
Rex, a Democrat, was elected to represent District One in Tucson in 2020. Before, the district had reliably voted for Republicans.
In 1991, Rex taught social studies at Flowing Wells Junior High School. In 2000, he began his 19-year career as an administrator in middle and high schools. During that time, he was an assistant principal at Ironwood Ridge High School and the principal at Tortolita Middle School.

Chris Mathis is a Democrat who teaches health care law at the U of A and lives with his wife, Colleen, in Tucson. In December, Chris was appointed to represent Legislative District 9 in the Arizona House of Representatives. He sought the job because he is alarmed by threats to reproductive rights, voting rights and the accelerating impacts of climate change.
Chris practices elder law, helping older Tucsonans and their families resolve issues related to long-term care, public benefits, senior housing and estate planning. A Professor of Practice at the University of Arizona’s James E. Rogers College of Law and Arizona Education Association member, Chris teaches classes on Health Care Law & Policy and Aging. He formerly served as Director of Policy & Communications at the Healthcare Markets & Regulation (HMR) Lab at Harvard Medical School and as Southern Arizona Coordinator for the Flinn-Brown Fellows Civic Leadership Program.
Chris practiced law in Illinois and worked in the Illinois General Assembly, the U.S. House of Representatives, the British Parliament and as a Health Care Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel prior to moving to Tucson in 2001. He earned a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Master in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health as well as law and undergraduate degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Chris is running for one of two House seats in the new Legislative District 18 to preserve reproductive rights, protect voting rights, invest in public schools and fight climate change.

48:24 Closing remarks and how to contact Stephanie Stahl Hamilton @ https://stahlhamiltonforaz.com/
Stephanie Stahl Hamilton is a member of the Arizona State Senate representing old District 10. She spoke to Democrats of Greater Tucson on July 18, 2022. She is running for the Arizona House of Representatives election to represent the new District 21.
After completing her Masters of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary, Stephanie and Derek made Tucson their home. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church, USA and is currently serving as Parish Associate at St. Mark’s. Stephanie’s faith and love for her community drove her extensive involvement from coaching cross country to coordinating the after-school garden program, to working in the schools as a substitute teacher, and even serving on the Site Council and PTO. The more she was involved in the Tucson community and public schools, the more she saw that a lack of investment in public education adversely affects all Arizonans
Stephanie worked tirelessly to collect signatures in order to refer SB1431 to the ballot as Proposition 305 to reverse the voucher expansion law passed in 2017. She served as the Regional Lead for Save Our Schools in 2018 to stop expansion and the lack of regulation in the voucher expansion system.
Stephanie served on TUSD’s Family Life Curriculum Committee, dedicating hundreds of hours to reviewing and revising the curriculum. Facing strong opposition, she has proven her commitment to the children in our community by completing an inclusive, updated, and relevant curriculum that addresses the well-being of the children in the district.
Stephanie’s role as the Executive Director of Montlure’s Presbyterian Church Camp enabled her to meet and serve children from all over Arizona. Their faces, stories, and connection to their communities lent a more comprehensive perspective of the critical role played by policies put into place by the State Legislature.
Stephanie was elected to the State House of Representatives in 2020 and serves on the Government & Elections committee as well as the Natural Resources, Energy, & Water committee.
On October 19, Stephanie was appointed by the Pima County Board of Supervisors to replace District 10 Senator Kristen Engel, who resigned to run for Congress. Nine days later, Stephanie was sworn in as a Senator.
As a result of redistricting, Stephanie is running again for the Arizona House of Representatives in LD21 instead of the State Senate.

00:04 Democratic Candidate for Arizona House in LD 21 Consuelo Hernandez
00:08 Introduction to Democratic Candidate Consuelo Hernandez
01:19 Democratic Candidate Consuelo Hernandez Remarks
05:53 Q&A
Consuelo Hernandez is on a mission to make things better for the people of Cochise, Pima and Santa Cruz counties. She knew from a very early age that her passion for her community would lead her to public service.
Consuelo said, “As a young Latina, my parents taught me the value of serving others. From the time I started at first grade at Liberty Elementary to when I graduated from Sunnyside High School, I knew that serving others was important. But I never thought that one day I would be President of the Sunnyside Union School District School Board and have the chance to serve the schools I love as an alumni.”
After graduation, Consuelo decided to attend Arizona State University. At ASU, Consuelo had few resources and little guidance, and quickly realized the system of higher education was never going to properly serve students from communities of color. After graduating with a degree in Global Health, Consuelo dedicated her career to mentoring at-risk youth and has spent the last decade fighting for education equity in Tucson and Pima County.
In addition to serving on the School Board, Consuelo has hosted free citizenship clinics, raised money for students to pay for their DACA renewals as well as providing public health services in Panama and Ghana. In recent years, Consuelo has continued to build her education credentials by studying for a Masters in Law with a concentration in economics at the University of Arizona and a certification in education finance from George Washington University in Washington DC. She believes that continuing to pursue her educational goals will help inspire students at Sunnyside Union to reach for their dreams.
Consuelo is committed to restoring funding for education, helping rebuild Arizona’s economy by investing in our small business community, and investing in infrastructure and renewable energy resources. She will work with fellow House Members to build critical coalitions that will deliver on the needs of her District and the people of Arizona.

00:05 Democratic Strategist Rachel Bitecofer
00:09 Introduction to Democratic Strategist Rachel Bitecofer
01:12 Democratic Strategist Rachel Bitecofer Remarks
12:35 Q&A
Rachel Bitecofer has launched a liberal super PAC named Strike Pac, which she describes as “a war machine for the Left.” Arguing that strategy and messaging for Democrats is woefully asymmetrical to the GOP’s, she asserts that going forward, Democrats must launch a “brand offensive” against Republicans. Rachel argues that instead of ideology, Democratic candidates should “lean in” to being Democrats and abandon the preference of Democrats to nominate unobtrusive, “Blue Dogs” who run against their own party’s brand.
The fact that progressive favorites like Stacey Abrams and Beto O’Rourke often came much closer to winning their races in red states in 2018 than Blue Dog moderates who tried to ingratiate themselves with Trump has been held as validation for her theory, as have the successful campaigns of Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in Georgia and Mark Kelly in Arizona.
In July 2019 Bitecofer predicted that President Trump would lose the 2020 election, with the Democratic candidate winning a base of at least 278 electoral votes. She correctly anticipated a Democratic sweep of three Midwest states in the Democrat’s so-called Blue Wall that Trump won narrowly in 2016 During the 2020 Democratic primaries. She attributed the increased turnout and Joe Biden’s success in the primary process to the eagerness of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (and in particular, black voters) to remove Trump from office. Bitecofer argued the 2020 electorate would see the return of voters who, feeling assured of a Trump loss, sat out the 2016 election but were now “terrified” that Trump is seemingly unstoppable.
