“Couples and money” is being discussed more and more frequently in the media. But what about those other money conversations?

You know, the awkward money conversations with family and friends. Maybe your friend asked to borrow money. Or you need to discuss your parents’ financial plan after retirement.

Everyone seems to dread these, and for good reason...if they’re not handled in a healthy way, the relationship could suffer as a result.

As our guest, Erin Lowry, author of the Broke Millennial series, teaches us:

  • How being proactive in talking about money can help you avoid a crisis later [04:23]
  • How to have awkward money conversations in a tactful, healthy way [09:12]
  • Why it’s important to get vulnerable and have the money conversations that others typically avoid [18:50]

She gives practical advice on how to bring up taboo money topics with family plus useful guidelines and scripts on how to protect the relationship while doing so.

  • How men can support their partners [7:07]
  • Steps female breadwinners can take to decompress without putting a dent in their budget [3:56]
  • How employers can take a stand to support women in the workplace [19:48]

Fears, Feelings, and Fatigue, OH MY!

Today we have a no-fluff conversation with Financial Planner and Podcast Host Meghan Dwyer about juggling career, family, and the nuances that come with being a female breadwinner.

Money isn't scary, but we all have stories that we tell ourselves about our self-worth and ability to handle finances. For many women these stories are deeply embedded, negative, and reinforced throughout their lives.

In part one of this two-part series, we explore:

  • The patriarchal attitudes that still define women's role in the workplace and home
  • The emotions that women feel as the primary breadwinner
  • How to process those emotions healthily

You learned about skeletal and muscular systems in school.

But what about the psychological and biological system that helps us form and maintain healthy relationships with ourselves, others, and our money?

Ed Coambs is a thought leader in Financial Therapy with experience in financial planning. He has combined his experience with analysis of the latest brain and love research to learn what makes us tick around relationships and money.

He’s found a theory that explains so much of it: Attachment Theory.

Ed is here to share how attachment styles can impact our financial well-being.

Your relationship with money, others, and even your perspective of yourself is developed based on how caregivers responded to your needs (or didn’t) from the time you were born.

This episode was so powerful that we’ve also recorded a Part 2!

You’ll find:

  • That positive social and emotional relationships are key to human survival and when deprived of them we begin to suffer

  • What “attachment styles” means and what each of the four styles may look like in you, your partner, or others.

  • About 50-60% of the general, non-clinical population exhibit a range of secure attachment behavior, indicating positive, repetitive relationships with themselves and others.

Let's face it, no one wants to compromise when it comes to their marriage or their money.

That's why this week's episode is all about creating synergy.

We know that when two individuals come together as one, they have an opportunity to become greater than the sum of their equal parts.

Despite this knowledge, couples still struggle to find actionable tools to tap into the magic of synergy.

This episode features Relationship Coach Cheri Timko on why a couple's greatest tool is the unique habits they create.

She also shares a powerful habit that any couple can incorporate to cultivate communication, commitment, and consistency across their relationship, including money.

AND here's the good news...once we establish this habit, it operates on autopilot.

A few highlights:

  • Have you ever struggled to talk to your partner about difficult things? Learn how to open the door to seamless communication. [00:04:29]

  • Think that daily, weekly, and monthly touchpoints with your partner don't make a difference? Learn how small shifts can be the catalyst to keeping your relationship in sync. [00:02:00]

  • Do you and your partner suffer from automation avoidance? Learn what it is and how to make automation work. [00:10:23]

If you know an educator, it’s likely you also are very aware of their ongoing internal tug-of-war between work-life balance and pay. E Danyall, a former adjunct professor and the primary breadwinner in her family, found a way out by creating online courses and sharing her knowledge online, instead of only in the classroom.

Now, it’s E’s mission to help other teachers leverage their knowledge toward a successful exit from the classroom. Or at least the freedom to choose.

She wants to empower educators to use their in-depth knowledge and experience to their advantage and finally earn what their expertise is worth.

Whether you’re still suffering at that exhausting, low-paying job; thinking about making a transition and wondering how to make the jump; or wading through the early years of entrepreneurship and trying to get your business off the ground (or have a partner doing any of these things)...E Danyall has insight for you!

A few highlights:

  • What it was like to go from being the highly-educated breadwinner with the career...to being home with much less income while she launched her online courses, including struggles with feelings of doubt, being burdensome, and fear...to becoming the entrepreneurial female breadwinner in the family. [8:41]

  • How the “independent woman” mindset can accidentally be damaging toward the bond and the intrinsic support for each other in a relationship, and how open communication can get couples back on the same page. [14:32]

  • What her husband said about her true value as a person, a woman, and a mother when she was feeling down about her financial contributions during the tough transition times. [25:10]

We all have a money story, and there are ALWAYS layers of emotions built-in. When we're in a relationship...oh, boy.

But there’s a silver lining:

We can create more intimacy, trust, and connection by opening up about our money story -- and also being curious about someone else's money story and experience.

Still, when and how do you bring up the topic of money? What if it’s a new relationship - you don’t want to scare them away, right?

Today’s guest, Kim Nicol, is a life coach with expertise in mindfulness and leadership. She is here to share tips about how, when, and why to bring up finances, especially when dating or in a new relationship.

She teaches us how to learn about our acquaintances, friends, and partners by asking curiosity-driven questions about their first job, holiday gifts, expectations, and memories.

A few highlights:

  • How you can learn about someone's experiences and perspective on money by asking creative questions. [4:31]

  • Kim’s process of evaluating why you may want to know about the person’s money perspective, and how to allow that to determine what you ask. [8:35]

  • Her personal experience in bringing up holiday gifts with her partner before Christmas, the sweet gifts they exchanged, and how being open about the subject relieved building tension about money and the upcoming holiday season. [18:04]

What’s your wisest investment? Most people think of their emergency fund, retirement account, or real estate. But Robin Taub is here to teach us about the importance of raising money-smart kids!

Why’s that?

For starters: if and when adult children get in a bind, their money problems often become their parents’ money problems. Heading this off with a solid financial education starts when they are very young.

Starting as young as age five, you can discuss simple math, delayed gratification, and the concept of trading money for things you want and need. Listen in as Robin Taub tells us how!

A Chartered Professional Accountant by training, Robin Taub began her career at KPMG, transitioned into real estate, and then landed in the complex world of derivatives marketing at Citibank Canada.

Today, she’s a professional speaker and author of The Wisest Investment, an update of the bestselling A Parent’s Guide to Raising Money-Smart Kids.

A few highlights:

  • Parents have a duty and responsibility to raise financially educated, money-smart kids. If not, the kids and the parents wind up paying the price. And it’s an expensive lesson for all involved. [2:37]

  • How to share age-appropriate money lessons with children under the five pillars: Earn, Save, Spend, Share, and Invest [8:47]

  • When we can slow down and connect with children over such a commonly-used, impactful tool like money, and look for opportunities to build money lessons into day-to-day life, we create a life-long bond over it. [24:11]

Adoption can be an emotionally and financially-taxing experience.

If you’re considering adoption, then Laura Coleman is your expert. She has both personal experience and also a business helping others prepare for adoption.

Listen in for (1) Laura’s story, which might make you question your assumptions, and (2) everything else you need to know about adoption!

Some pointers:

  • Prior to adoption, identify what type of adoption you want. Then, you can research and discover the vehicle that will get you there.

As an example, let’s say you’d prefer a domestic adoption. Then, you can find an appropriate agency and see how much it costs. From there, you can build your funding plan. Laura even helps people build and create multiple sources of income to make this dream come true!

  • There are many ways to raise money toward funding an adoption or fertility journey. Some ideas include grants, fundraising, borrowing, and side hustles AKA additional income streams. Laura’s Preparing Financially For Adoption Course helps walk you through the entire process.

Stay until the end to hear how $30k got Laura nowhere, but $2,700 led to adopting 3 children!

A few highlights:

  • Couples often fight about money, but an adoption or fertility journey adds an entire layer to that. Her best advice to maintain your relationship? Have a “date night” fund and commit that focused 1:1 time. This will help you grow toward each other, even during the most emotional or tumultuous times. [11:40]

  • If you have a high-deductible medical insurance plan, you’re eligible for a Health Savings Account (HSA). This is a great place to stuff savings in preparation for your future adopted child’s potential unknown medical needs. [15:55]

  • The general assumption is that adoptions are expensive. This is in part due to that there may be some physical or medical needs that come with an adopted child. However, there is help out there! For example: tax credits; Medicaid; and other ways to structure your finances so that you can maximize the utility of any benefits offered to you. [16:40]

If what has always helped you through life’s challenges just isn’t working anymore, it’s okay to seek help. Could couples therapy be a fit?

Therapy isn’t the ‘lay on a couch and share your feelings’ eye-rolling event the movies portray. When done well, it can help you and your partner get closer and happier than ever.

70% of adults have experienced some level of trauma in their lives. When you become a couple, knowing your potential triggers is key! This will help to navigate intense, emotional conversations and to support each other when you need it most.

Every couple can benefit from learning about and discovering how to use tools to improve communication and resolve conflicts. For the disagreements that seem to be chronic, or at an impasse, there’s more to it than just a compromise.

A therapist can help you discover a solution.

This week’s guest, Ryan Baker, shows you how it’s done.

A few highlights:

  • The Four Horsemen of a failing relationship are: (1) criticism, (2) contempt, (3) defensiveness, and (4) stonewalling. Any of the four can be addressed and worked through in therapy, and this can repair or save the relationship. [7:49]

  • Experiences we have as children and as adults continuously form and impact our core beliefs. The core beliefs that form over a lifetime affect everything - money, trust, relationships, friendships, and more. This is true even if you don’t realize that core belief exists or know why! [14:21]

  • What happens if you as a couple can’t or don’t want to participate in therapy? couples avoid therapy over financial concerns, assumed stigmas, or because one partner refuses. In this case, individual therapy is an option. Also, something you can do right now, for free, is to (1) recognize and become acutely aware of your thoughts and (2) evaluate their validity. [19:55]

Modern couples are taking the DIY wedding to a new level -- on this episode, Jessica Bishop teaches you how!

Couples are taking more ownership and personalizing their wedding celebrations. This creates a more authentic and personal experience rather than the traditional weddings of old.

The first step toward planning a meaningful wedding is to discuss how large or intimate the celebration should be. When you identify joint priorities as a couple, then you can easily start looking into how much each component costs and determining:

  1. If you can afford it now, or

  2. How long it will take you to save up for it

From there, you can make a plan to jointly work toward saving up. This may include side hustles and/or creating a plan to have the wedding style and date you want!

There’s nothing wrong with eloping or having a small ceremony now and planning a big bash when the pandemic is over. This is especially true if you’re ready to just get your life started together and save up over time for that large party!

A few highlights:

One of the biggest struggles (and expenses) in planning a wedding is the ever-expanding guest list. Keeping it intimate will save money, of course, but it will also ensure that you can provide a meaningful experience to each guest. [12:23]

When creating your guest list, use these 5 simple questions when deciding whether or not to add invitees. Don’t feel obligated to invite someone you haven’t seen in person within the past 2 years.

How can you navigate the financial conversation with parents or other contributors to the wedding budget? Practice being clear with communication about monetary values, the timing of payments, how the money flows, and any assumptions or stipulations accompanying the financial contribution. Your journey in discovering what stress is lack of communication versus fear of talking about money will be a valuable lesson applicable in nearly every aspect of your life.

Natalie Gold believes that you can live a more successful, richer, happier life with the right plan in place.

Let’s ditch scary names like estate planning, trusts and estates, and other confusing after-death terms, she says. Most people don’t even do a will because nobody wants to think about death!

Instead, consider planning intentionally for the duration of your life. You can set things up so that they’re very clear to all involved, leaving a legacy of love instead of attorneys fees!

A big misconception is that estate attorneys only help old people set things up for when they die. In reality, trust and estate planning helps you throughout life with:

  • negotiating salaries more intentionally,

  • starting new businesses,

  • protecting your assets against lawsuits,

  • pre- and post- nuptial agreements,

  • wills, and

  • financial advice toward properly funding children's college, retirement, and a lasting legacy!

A few highlights:

  1. Legacy planning isn’t just for the elderly. At 18, you (and your children) need a healthcare proxy. Legally, children are no longer under parents’ guardianship. So, documentation needs to be in place for making emergency medical decisions. [4:25]

  2. Getting married is like starting a business, but even more intimate and, often, with the intention to raise children together. Drafting a marriage constitution beforehand allows both parties to outline the rules and regulations as equals. It also guarantees that both parties will be treated fairly if things don’t work out. [8:46]

  3. You are forced to have a will already -- it’s the laws of your state! No matter who you’re estranged from or don’t disagree with, if you pass away without your wishes and terms documented, your parents or next of kin get everything. Going through the estate planning process and establishing a trust prevents your loved ones from suffering through the court system and unnecessary drama once you're gone. [15:29]

Catch financial coach Michelle Waymire, on Episode 2 of The Couples Financial Coach Podcast!

Nothing makes Michelle happier than the feeling when finance “clicks,” and a young, scrappy human is able to make better choices through education and empowerment.

Michelle says:

“We have in this country a sense that if you have combined finances, or you have financial ties to other human beings, then that means those relationships are stronger or better than the other relationships.

Know that your decision to combine or not combine finances with whatever loved ones you please does not give any sort of emotional weight to those relationships....

These are all just aspects of a relationship that we get to pick and choose in the way that we see fit.“
