And we're back!

It's been nice to have a break but it's exciting to be back at it!

This week we are talking about work-life balance. This episode is part rant and part how-to and 100% fun.

Some people feel that work-life balance is not achievable, that it's a myth, and that you can't really have it if you want to get ahead. Tune in this week for Reshad's thoughts on how we can place a higher importance on this issue and why it's needed.

Leadership development is, too often, more like a "choose-your-own-adventure" novel than a guided journey. Although personal responsibility is important, we as leaders, need to be paying attention to how we are growing our people. Handing someone the keys to the building and a title just isn't good enough, we need to be great guides.

The Weekly Leadership Experience will be on break until September 6th.

You might not usually think of LOVE as an essential ingredient in successful business or leadership, but it plays a bigger role than you think. Love, the verb, has to do with your disposition towards other people and how you treat them. Building a business culture and your leadership based on love has the potential for phenomenal results.

Drawing on his 25+ years of experience as CEO of major corporations, Joel Manby wrote LoveWorks detailing how to integrate “love the verb” into the leadership ethos and philosophy of any organization. This servant leadership approach has been systematically proven to transform organizations through lower turnover, higher employee engagement, more satisfied customers, and stronger profits.

It's no secret that change is difficult. Everyone wants change, no one wants TO change, and even fewer people want to LEAD change. If that's not enough, most change is met with resistance, obstacles, buried artifacts, and a leader's own challenges with influence. So how do we overcome these challenges and effectively lead and influence change?

Nancy Murphy, Founder & President of CSR Communications, shares how we can uncover the artifacts that may be impeding change, how we can draw on the four types of influence, and how to address resistance.

We need to talk about New Year’s Resolutions!

Everyone is talking about it, but Reshad is going to take a few twists and turns in this road.

A lot of times resolutions fall flat because there’s no substance to them, no oomph. They are a fleeting, whimsical idea that sounds good and noble when they’re spoken out loud but really bear no weight. These resolutions often end up being something that sounds good, or is something that feels expected by, or will win the approval of other people. This is one of the biggest traps people fall into with setting their New Year’s Resolutions.

The word resolution in this sense means a firm decision to do or not do something which is admirable in and of itself. The problem is that these decisions, whatever they may be, all too quickly bite the proverbial dust before you even go a week. There are a few key issues that affect this and that’s what we will dive into today.

To help Reshad talk about this today, we are doing things a little differently and he will be joined by his gorgeous wife, Cher to discuss New Year's Resolutions and goal setting.

In this episode: * What do we think of when we think of New Year's Resolutions? * Why do we often struggle to uphold our resolutions? * What steps can we take to make our resolutions carry more weight? * Ideas on how you can craft your resolutions or theme for the year. * What role does hope play in resolutions and goal setting? * And more!

Let's say you get dropped off in the middle of the wild woods with a map, compass, and some basic supplies. Would you survive?

Do you know how to orient a topographical map and compass to the north? Do you know the difference between true north, magnetic north, and how to adjust for magnetic declination? Do you have the survival skills needed to make it out?

Facing a survival situation may sound dramatic, but we do it to ourselves, and we do it to new leaders all the time by not being equipped for success through leadership development.

There are two aspects of leadership development to consider. One, having the right tools and equipment. Two, knowing how to use the tools and equipment.

This episode serves as a follow up on last week's conversation with De Andra Judge as Reshad continues to look at the roots of racism.

Leaders at all levels, from all walks of life, need to take the time to know their biases and deal with them. Not only do leaders need to do this for themselves, but they need to encourage the people they lead to do the same.

This episode takes a look at biases, stereotypes and the sometimes slippery slope to racism. Listen in to hear more!

You can not achieve greatness if you are satisfied with just being good. As Jim Collins says: "Good is the enemy of great." And the truth is that the "good" in life can lead to complacency.

It is in you to achieve something great, be that in relationships, life, business, or otherwise. Realizing that something is in your hands.

In this episode, Reshad explores the idea of not being accepting of 'good enough' and having a healthy discontent, which will allow us to move towards the great things in life.

Goal setting is one the most essential practices for long term success that anyone can engage in.

One of the most famous studies on goal setting is from Harvard University. The study revealed that 83% of the population don’t have goals, 14% have goals in mind but not written down, and 3% have goals and are written down.

Here’s where the study gets a little crazy. The 14% of people with goals in mind but not written down were shown to be 10 x more successful than people without goals. The 3% with goals written down were shown to be 3 x more successful than the 14%. This means that this group is 30 x more successful than people without goals.

The challenge, sometimes with goals, is lacking fulfillment when you achieve them. This is why it's essential to check that our goals take AIM and are authentic, important, and meaningful.

Imagine standing in a sandy arena. Just you and a wild beast. Hundreds, if not thousands of pounds of raw power, intelligence, and will to live. One strike of a limb could leave you seriously injured. The hot sun beats on your back, and the only sounds are the scuffing of sand, the heavy breathing of the beast across from you, and the thump thump thump of your heartbeat in your ears.

How we, as leaders respond to uncertain times and lead our teams through them, is important in so many ways. In this episode, I discuss a few ways I believe leaders need to act during uncertainty.
