In the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 8 Verse 33 Jesus, responds to St. Peter's rebuke of His preaching.
Matthew 8:33 "Who turning about and seeing his disciples, threatened Peter, saying: Go behind me, Satan, because thou savourest not the things that are of God but that are of men."
In this moment in the Gospel of St. Luke which might shock some of us, Jesus utters these works to one of His closest disciples. St. Peter, the man who was to become the first Pope and the rock upon which Christ builds His church on earth, is suddenly and publicly rebuked by Our Lord.
It's a moment that shows us that even the most devote followers of Christ from within his own inner circle fall into temptation, humans living with the fallout of original sin.
I strongly suggest you read Matthew Chapter eight.
The phrase Jesus utters in more modern translation is of course, 'Get Behind me satan' and that is the title of the Father Gabriel Amorth book we are discussing in this episode.
Originally published in Italian, this English translation, republished by Sophia Institute Press, is a pragmatic guide to spiritual warfare and aimed toward dispelling myths and fears and to get to the truth, teaching every Christian and follower of Christ should understand. In the very next line of the Gospel of Matthew lies an essential teaching Jesus gives to the whole world after rebuking St. Peter.
Matthew 8:34 "And calling the multitude together with his disciples, he said to them: If any man will follow me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."
To speak more about this moment and the Father Amorth's book, Get behind me Satan, I am joined by Michael Litchens of Sophia institute press.

Angles and Demons have been with us since creation and particularly after the fall of Adam. A new book Angelic Virtues and Demonic vices is a study of virtue and vice. The volume is a detailed analysis of Vice and Sin and the remedy for each. Drawing from many sources but mainly the teaching of Saint Tomas Aquinas, Father Basil Cole, a professor of Moral Theology helps break down Saint Tomas's teaching and apply it to our everyday lives.
As one reads through this volume it feels like the brain is being re-oriented to logic and reason, the kind that help us live happy lives by recognizing our faults and becoming humble and by recognizing the faults in others and becoming charitable.
In Angelic Virtues and Demonic Vices, Saint Thomas guides us on how to pursue our true celestial homeland while avoiding running to a false heaven. He outlines the various vices, and their forty plus daughters, and details how to conquer them.
In even simpler terms, it is a book for our times, despite the increase of challenges we face to remain virtuous and "live a clean life" the book lays out logically the how our own choices and behaviour is what makes the difference and this has to happen on a moment to moment basis. The devil does not rest.
Joining me to talk about his book Angelic Virtue and Demonic Vices is father Basil Cole.

The Catholic Controversy. It's a phrase that seems as old as the bible and as modern as present day. The Catholic faith has never been short of controversy and over the centuries it has endured challenge after challenge from bot outside and from within.
One such controversy was when 72,000 Calvinists in Chablais had separated themselves from the Roman Church. Their reasons were seemingly many, valid and justified, until a young future Saint, Francis de Sales, volunteered to re-evangelize the Calvinists.
He was met with discord, made a fortress his home and was forbidden to preach, so he began to write in defense of the faith and slipped these notes under the doors of the good people of Chablais, that they may reconsider their choice and come back into the faith.
His arguments are incredibly detailed, laden with scriptural reference, humble, strong, tough, loving, raw and honest about what being catholic means and that it is far from attaining perfection but rather instead falling constantly while striving for it.
The text could have bee written last week as nearly every argument presented in 1594 is relevant and true for our age.
With me to talk about this volume is Father Lawrence Carney.

How can we really begin to understand the Bible? It's a fairly daunting task to approach the reading of the bible from cover to cover. It is loaded with history, law, prophecy, stories and the Holy word of God. Sacred Scripture requires attention and understanding and frankly, time to absorb and comprehend the Word of God.
as 2 Timothy 3:16 states All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
The Bible, as it is widely read today, was given to us by the Holy Roman Catholic Church and with the New Testament of Jesus Christ is wholly worth exploring, understanding and digesting for it's wisdom on both spiritual and the practical questions of life.
Approaching something this beneficial requires assistance and so these next few episodes we will be going through, Understanding the Bible a book by Father Jeffrey Kirby who joins us to take us through and guide us on this important subject matter.
A quick note that we will be referencing the New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition, but feel free to reference Douay-Rheims as well. Father Kirby Joins us now for Episode One, Overview and Genesis to Deuteronomy.

The classic Learning test (CLT). We all, in one way or another, have been tested. Tests are designed to help us to know where we are, but they can also act as goal and provide a marker of sorts in our progress toward an education or knowledge about something.
Tests and testing are also an important passage way toward the next level of our education as we learn and grow. We have no doubt heard of the site to S.A.T test that many universities require for admission. Students and parents alike sweat over the scores obtained on these tests.
Why the Classic Learning test?
Well, what if these tests were flawwed or even, by design, could lead students away from a specific type of education and in another direction entirely.
A test is something one prepares for and tunes their learning accordingly toward the end goal which is to attain a high score.
Tests move us toward learning required for a successful test result.
To use and athlete analogy, an arm wrestler would prepare differently from the test of facing another arm wrestler, than the way a tennis player or hockey player would prepare for their opponent.
Education is no different, students prepare for the questions they are going to be asked. But what if those questions don’t line up with a classic type of education?
With me today to talk about tests is the inventor of the classic learning test, Jeremy Tate.

Memento Mori. Latin phrases have a way of tickling our intellect, even when we do not fully understand them. Memento Mori, latin can do a lot with to words. The short phrase translates to Remember death, or another translation suggests this; that one remember that one will one day die, one day our earthly end will have arrived and it is good to remember this one inevitable, unavoidable fact that awaits every one of us. We will all have our last our, our last breath and our last heartbeat.
Meditations on death are an important part of living.
Imitation of Christ, attributed to Thomas A Kempis, is the most read book on earth after the Holy Bible and now we have a new volume, by this author, translated for the first time into English, by Father Robert Nixon, Director at the New Norcia Institute for Benedictine Studies Western Australia.
It might seem like a macabre topic to start a new year, but the book, Meditations on Death, Preparing for Eternity, instead brings us to an appreciation of life with a healthy respect for it's fragility and helps us ponder and reflect on our use of this precious gift of life that God has given us.
Death can be seen as a doorway to eternity and the beginning of our eternal existence.
Joining me to discuss this work is the translator of the Latin text, Fr. Robert Nixon.

The book complied by Paul Thigpen, The Life of Saint Joseph as Seen by the Mystics. Often thought of as the silent Saint - The Blessed Saint Joseph, is a quiet and strong figure. The man who was the foster father of Jesus on this earth is a somewhat mysterious figure often prompting questions or quick judgements. In some ways he very much in the background and not a single word he spoke was recorded in sacred scripture. This for reasons only God can know.
The book is a narrative account of Saint Joseph's life as seen through the visions of Catholic mystics throughout the centuries. The author compiled and arranged the texts of these visions into this volume, as a way of possibly deepening the understanding of the life of this incredible father.
The life of Saint Joseph is a trial of suffering and of great honor and of perfection of virtue.
The writings of the mystic visionaries are a vivid account of well known bible stories, but the way they are revealed gives one’s heart a new outlook and a more detailed understanding of the Holy Family.
The volume leaves you enlightened, uplifted and appreciative of the life of the Holy family, particularly the marriage between Mary and Joseph and their unique task of raising the Savior of the world, in poverty and in many dangerous situations.
The book will inspire even a hardened heart and touch it with a loving tenderness that can only be delivered through mystical sanctity.
Here to speak with me about the Life of Saint Joseph - as Seen by the Mystics is Paul Thigpen.

CHRISTMAS BLOSSOMS - Priscilla Smith McCaffrey Christmas Blossoms is an illustrated book written by Priscilla Smith McCaffrey and it warms my heart. As we approach the advent season we may be pulling out our advent calendar, or preparing our Christmas decorations reading our homes for the wonderful season which annually comes upon us. It's a time to prepare for the celebration of the arrival of Jesus and to remember Him in His humility, poverty and innocence. He came to us as a child to conquer our hearts with HIs love. Year upon year, despite the distractions and all of the other reasons to renounce this season, the story of Jesus as the Christ child can only serve to deepen our faith, hope and charity.
Christmas Blossoms is a thoughtful, heartfelt and delicate book which tells the story of Factory worker Jian, a painter, artisan and pre Mao Chinese Christian who lost everything, but placed his faith and love in the child Jesus in the form of a small figure he had created and kept secret in his pocket.
It's a difficult story at times, one of broken hearts and broken lives but uplifting too recounting the friendship of Christ and also the kinship and love that can be exchanged between people. It is also a story of Christmas Miracles.
Christmas Blossoms, had me weepy a couple of times and the volume beautifully illustrated with it's watercolor and sketches. The illustration was crafted by sacred art painter, Gwyneth Thomposon-Briggs.

ALTER CHRISTUS - Fr. Ezra Sullivan O.P. Alter Christus is a latin term for how a Holy Priest acts as "another Christ" and it is the title of a book prepared by Fr. Ezra Sullivan.
The Authority that flows from the Kingship of Christ into this world, through his Holy Church and Holy priests seems to have been mangled in Modernism and the modern world. The role and Authority of Priests themselves in our lives has eroded over the decades and through it is sometimes hard to grasp that this moment too is completely God will, Catholics are called to understand this.
In Alter Chritus we see how Many Catholics have completely lost touch with the origins of their faith, I know I was once of them, and also the call of their Baptism.
Fr. Sullivan has put together a book that seeks to reinvigorate priests to the initial and original understanding of their Holy Ordination and he writes a manual of sorts, to assist these Holy men, many who have fallen in some way in this modern world, to restore the gift of their ordination.
As a layperson it was inspiring to read this book, not only because it outlines and reminds us of the tremendous sacrifices that Ordained religious of Christ's church make, but of the scriptural continuity that logically connects Our Christian faith through the centuries.
The Catholic priest leaves behind his family, and every inkling of leaving an earthly legacy and heredity other than, if grace allows, his work and life to the spiritual deposit of the faith.
Alter Christus reminds us that Holy Priests and Bishops should be in our prayers, especially in these times. Thankfully Father Sullivans book, can give Priests and their spiritual directors solid reasoning and scriptural references to correcting errors and moving toward the fullness of their vocation and calling.
In modern times the Holy Catholic Priest has had un uphill battle. The church seems to be under constant attack and with this volume Alter Christus becomes one tool to add to the many a Holy Priest needs to fulfill his mission.
Fr. Ezra Sullivan joins me to talk about his book Alter Christus.

The Once and Future roman Rite. R.I.T.E. No matter what time we are living in, we are always living in God’s Time. Sometimes the future is found in the past. Sometimes we must move toward tradition, a way that we once did things in order to understand what "was" and use that new understanding of the "old way" to shape our future.
Long before the New World Order was a catch phrase everyone came to know and somewhat understand, Roman Catholics were dealing with a the Latin version of the same phrase. For Roman Catholics in the 1960 the words Novus Ordo, or NEW ORDER, were the two small latin words that the earthly leadership of the the One, Holy and Apostolic Catholic Church of Jesus Christ were floating as the bright and fantastic future of the faith.
The Once and Future Roman Rite.
Before Pope Pius the VI presented the Roman Catholic world with his vision of a new way to pray, Roman Catholics had been praying a Liturgy carefully handed to them through 15 centuries of tradition. The church moved slowly and carefully for 1500 years and it took just ten years to dismantle it completely.
50 years later, with virtually none of the promises fulfilled, fewer vocations, less attendance and a free-for-all in the liturgy Catholics are turning back to traditional ways and the liturgy that was practically snatched from their hands.
Author Peter Kwasnewski has crafted a detailed account of what happened with compelling and significant arguments helping us piece together what happened and what was lost.
The Future Roman Rite
It helps one understand the depth and profound beauty of the Roman Catholic faith as it was celebrated in the Traditional Roman Rite.
Here to speak with me about his book is Dr. Peter Kwasnieswki.

THE SECRET OF THE HOLY FACE - Fr. Lawrence Carney III
The secret of the Holy Face. The human face is a is a window into a person's life. Our face, The face we present to the world and the faces of people we know and see are a focal point to our humanity. An expression, a smile, a frown or even the most subtle muscle move can reveal so much about a person. Our face tells the world who we are, moment to moment.
In his recent book, The Secret of the Holy Face, Father Lawrence Carney reveals to us a detailed account of the three instances Jesus revealed to us his very face through three separate and distinct miracles which have been the subject of study and fascination ever since.
The Secret of the Holy Face.
Whether it is the veil Saint Veronica used to wipe the face of Jesus on his walk to Calvary or the imprint on the shroud of Turin or the linen veil and Manoppello Italy the very idea that God, through these miracles left for us an image of Himself as the second person of the Holy Trinity is a testament to the life of Christ.

Father Carney revives a somewhat lost, but very important devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus in his book and he provides us with a detailed understanding of the Holy Face of Jesus.

The little way of living with less. It's a funny world we live in. Over the course of my life the mantra of MORE MORE MORE seems to have been pushed to the public in unimaginable ways in a relentless attempt to have us all become the fruit of industry.
We consumers, consume and much effort is made to move people to consumption and more often than not, OVER consumption. Somewhere along the way I wanted to simplify, to have less, do more with less and use what I have rather than contribute to the excess of a modern world, bent on having me play the obedient role of consumer.
Living with less.
In her book, The Little Way of living with Less, Laraine Bennet takes the simple teachings of St. Therese of Lisieux and blends it with a method of reducing one's life, in size and footprint and getting back to essentials.
She shares personal stories we can all relate to and takes downsizing to a spiritual level by incorporating the teachings of this great Saint in order to help humble us a little and live our lives consciously with less material and more spiritual.

Consuming a volume like this will help you see clearly the minor messes in your life that might be hindering your progress. We can be thankful for the Saints who are wonderful examples, even in modern times of how to move our life toward God and detach from the material things which can weigh us down.

The Journey to Mount Carmel - Father Jeffrey Kirby STL
The Journey to Mount Carmel is a spiritual path. The Spiritual way can be long and arduous and one must face difficulties along the way. Carmel, or more properly Mount Carmel, has a special place in Christian contemplative Spirituality. The profit Elijah first went to this mountain to live in its caves, to get away from the exterior noise of the the outside world and begin to listen for God's voice from within an inner and private sanctum.
Oh Elijiah's journey to Mount Carmel,
500 years before Christ offered the solitude of a hermitic life in service to God and from that silence God gifted his prophecy through a select few who went to the mountain to listen to Him.
The term Carmelite takes its name from mount Carmel and at a moment when the church was again in need of contemplative force, Our Lady of Mount Carmel appeared to Saint Simon stock and gave him the instructions on the Brown Scapular.
The Saints who've worn the Brown scapular are too many to name here. The Brown Scapular is worn by clergy and laity alike. Once invested in and having taken the vows of this sacred promise, one wears the scapular daily for life as a sign of love and devotion to Jesus and the His Mother. The promises of wearing the scapular are not primary the reason for wearing it, through many since can attest to the how accepting the scapular is life altering.
Wearing the brown scapular is part of the journey to mount carmel.
The ceremony is brief and beautiful, personal and permanent. It changes you.

You are called to Greatness
You are called to greatness. Good books are good books. You can pick them up anytime and re-read them and they always have something new to offer. This is certainly true of sacred scripture.
In the Case of “you are called to greatness” by Father Leo Trese,
who left a legacy of Hemmingwayesque simple, clear, direct practical teaching with his books, we can immerse in the profound nature of his solid teaching.
Reading this volume is a strong refresher of good catechism and also a great barometer of where I am in the life of faith. To explore and understand virtue the way it is taught in this book by father Leo was, as one small example a joyful reminder of a rich perspective.
Father Trese left us in 1970, but this book encourages us to remember not only that we are called to greatness but practically hear and live the invitation to that call to greatness. There may be good teachers today, but there is a solid a grounded feeling here, rooted in practical tools for modern living.

The Diary of Saint Gemma, gives me great pause for reflection. I always admire young saints ability to be so certain, or rather to listen so obediently to God’s call to them from a young age.
Saint Gemma Galliani’s life is no exception.
Her diary has all the rantings of a young Catholic, living the struggle of attempting to live in perfect love and union with Christ. To choose to leave the worldly life and enter into a deep spiritual life, full of its pain and grace, heartbreak and loneliness, longing and desire for heaven and sanctity.
It is striking and inspiring to read about the intimate conversations she has with Jesus, or lady of sorrows and her Guardian Angel. Sometimes i even felt a bit too close while reading this book, almost a voyeur into what the saints must endure to purge themselves of sin while still lining in a human body and striving for the beatific vision immediately after this life ends.
In the case of Saint Gemma,
who died at just 25 years of age, we really get a sense of how much the stigmatist wanted to enter into Christs sufferings, to gladly wear and feel the pain of his crown of thorns and write about the experiences at the request of her spiritual director.
In her diary we have a raw an honest document of what it took for her to become a saint. Here to talk about the book is Kristen van Uden.

The idea of being a pilgrim still fascinates me. I like to arrive at unknown places with an empty mind and to have it filled with the knowledge the place and surroundings have to offer. Being a pilgrim, to me is arriving humbly and hungry and walking away satisfied and enriched.
That is how I felt after reading Pilgrimage to the Museum. It's no secret that the Met in New York City is a must see museum for anyone who wants to understand, study or just experience art. My guest today Stephen Auth has created a unique pathway through that museum, giving a virtual tour in book form that leaves you in wonder and also enriched. His keen eye, detailed descriptions and straight forward storytelling has you come away with lessons in art, history, theology and at the same times touches the heart by relating complex history through the works found in the Met.
I have never been on a tour with Stephen, but in the end it feels like I have been on a lovely journey through one of the worlds greatest museums.
Steve and his wife have been wandering this museum for years and when they began looking at the work through their Catholic faith the tours emerged to share wheat they were learning.
Steve is a member of the Regnum Christi movement and sits on the national board of the Lumen Institute, which he helped found in New York. With his wife, Evelyn, he has led the New York City street mission for ten years.

Today on The Way is Love we welcome Back Adam Blai with his new book, the Exorcism Files. In this volume Adam draws from his extensive experience as a lay person assisting with Exorcisms around the world. The book is a collection of his experiences presented as short stories which highlights the seemingly innocent pitfalls and practices which allow a person to become demonically oppressed or even possessed.
Adam Blai presents readers with enlightening true stories and traces their causation. Whether people provided a gateway through Ouija boards, tarot cards, Reiki, Yoga, or martial arts, Blai reports from firsthand observation how they were lured into the occult.
As much as one might think that practices which have become "mainstream" Adam has witnessed how people have been horribly affected by willing to engage in these practices.
Blai demonstrates that there is a supernatural enemy in this world who is trying to destroy us. Perhaps author Mike Aquilina says it best.
"I don’t envy Adam Blai’s knowledge of the world of demons. His knowledge is hard won. But I am grateful to him for telling us what we need to know for the spiritual combat we call the Christian life."
I feel it necessary to give a fair warning that we will be speaking about Satan, demons and the evil spirits encountered by personally by Adam in his work in the Catholic Diocese. Casting out demons goes back to Christ and he gave this power to the Apostles on day of Pentecoste. Exorcisms are done by trained Catholic Priests and Adam has assisted and witnessed many exorcisms.
Celestial beings are no myth. They have been written about for centuries. Long before UFO's and Aliens became the popular culture, saints and mystics, pontiff and prophets were tuned to the messages from God through the Holy Angles.
Nine Choirs strong, an unimaginable number of Angels were created at the moment of creation. God assigned one to each and every one of us to be our protector and friend. Our very own Angel Guardian. If you are hearing my voice right now, count yourself as a person who has a Guardian Angel.
The Holy Angles are to be taken seriously. Throughout scripture we see the Angels, announcing, assisting, overseeing and protecting. From Job to Christ himself the Holy Angles of God assiduously love Him and carry our his Will. They are infused with incredible powers, incredible love, devotion, intellect and wisdom and can in an instant discern, defend and act on your behalf.
For any of you listening who think that the work of the Holy Angels is mere fantasy or that these mystical and beautiful creatures sent from heaven are not among us and impacting our lives, I pray that you look and listen more closely to all that is in plain sight about them, especially in Holy Scripture and the Doctrine of the Holy Catholic Church.
Father Robert Nixon, who spoke with us after his translation of a book on Humility is back today, to share with us his insights and discoveries when translating the work of Italian St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Meditations on the Holy Angels
Gonzaga is a patron Saint of youth and he left us at the tender age of twenty three. The saint understood the Angels and left an incredible work which now thanks to Father Nixon’s dedication is available in English for the first time.
Father Nixon joins us from Australia to discuss the work, Meditations on Holy Angels written in the 15th century by St. Aloysius Gonzaga.
KNOW THYSELF: The Game of Temperaments
Know Thyself: The Game of Temperaments is created by Larraine Bennett. She is here to speak with us about the types of Temperaments and the new game created to discover and learn about them.
You think you know yourself?
We are all born with distinct personality traits. Some love going to parties, while others seek solitude. Some are naturally brash and assertive, while others are content to just get along.
Temperaments are a part of the way we're made.
Ancient philosophers identified four basic temperaments that wise thinkers through the ages have used to understand human nature.
Author Laraine Bennett, has a master's degree in Philosophy and has co-authored 6 books with her husband, Art, and one solo book, A Year of Grace: 365 Reflections for Caregivers. She helped create the popular TemperamentQuiz.com. and has been married to husband for 45 years. They have 4 adult children and 8 grandchildren.
Laraine has developed a board game called, Know Thyself! The Game of Temperaments – the first game to help you identify, understand, and appreciate your own temperament, and those of your friends and family.
Take charge or follow the lead? Jump in feet first or analyze and contemplate? Introvert or extrovert? Focused or distractible?
All of these traits point to the temperament you were born with. Which one is yours, and how much of the others do you have?

Peace be with you. That is the name of the book and the sentiment of our show today here on The Way is Love Podcast. Who isn't searching for peace daily in these times? It seems that less and less of what we are presented with involves the peace and tenderness of heart that humanity needs in the times we are living through.
The book "Peace be with you" by Father Narcisco Irala is just what one might be looking for. If you like manuals and books that give you concrete instructions on helping yourself and other people then revisit this volume originally published in 1969.
But we have evolved so much since then you might be saying? Reading through this volume I really felt a call back to action. I like a book that has a pragmatic approach and a Formula for Happiness at its onset.
It's refreshing to read a book that has quotes like this one. “Every morning,” says the Doctor of Gentleness, St. Francis de Sales, “prepare your soul for a tranquil day.”
Peace be with you is published by Sophia Press and our guest is Kirsten Van Uden.
A Surfer's Guide to the Soul, Bear Woznick, a masters World Champion Tandem surfer lays out a fascinating life. His book recounts his life in Faith, battling himself, life and the elements. I confess, I read this book in one sitting. It's amazing how the things you need to hear arrive at your doorstep in one way or another.
If you like adventure, if you want to feel like you are sitting down with a good friend, whose openness and willingness to share his failures as much as his success', while the whole time putting you at ease then this is a great read for you.
If you are on any kind of journey, then there is probably one that Bear has been on in his life that you can resonate with.
Praise for A Surfer's Guide to the Soul
Maybe Melody Green, author, speaker, songwriter describes it best in the first pages of this book.
“Find out how one man enjoys the highs, embraces the lows, and survives and grows from the inevitable wipeouts. Whether you surf or not, this book will challenge you in new ways to let go, dive deep, and give your all to God.”
Bear describes the sensations of his soul and the ocean.
"To me, bodysurfing was the most intimate I could ever hope to be with creation. Even then, I sensed that being one with the wave was in some way being one with my Creator.

The Greater Reset, asks: Must we simply accept a world where systemic poverty, racism, and war are inevitable, unavoidable, and irreparable? Or can we turn the present crisis into an opportunity to “reset” the system back to universal principles and absolute values of natural law? Can we then apply those principles to build upon the new possibilities, discoveries, and advances of the twenty-first century? Today on the Way is Love on the Focusing Way Podcast we are talking global economics. It's a big subject and we are mostly hearing about it through the sloganeering of our age. Put up your hand if you have heard the words Build Back Better, more often than you wanted too in the last two years. I know I feel I have.
Perhaps even more so we have hearing these other three words which promise a wonderful future, "The Great Reset". While working folks toil away at jobs and seek out the ordinary pleasures in life, a group of people meet in Switzerland once a year to present ideas and ultimately decide what the world should be like.
My guests today Michael D. Greaney and Dawn K. Browhawn are the co-authors of a book called THE GREATER RESET. Reclaiming personal Sovereignty Under Natural Law.
The book presents counter arguments on The Great Reset, with a greater plan and one that considers past teachings with historical reflection and forward thinking. This book will give you a history of the writings, ideas and intellectual thinking that influences how we view and perceive economics today, with the important view to what the role of faith, morality, virtue and the Natural Law plays in how we organize our lives and our social and economic structures.

A Mind at Peace - Reclaiming an Ordered Soul in the Age of Distraction Joshua P. Hochschild
Who is up for a little Soul work?
Years back a friend and I greeted each other by one of us saying "Rock and Roll" and the other answering, "Fill the Soul”. It was a nice reminder of how playing or listening to music could be and exercise that is soothing to the soul. It was also a great reminder that we actually have a soul and that soul that has to be considered and is moved by the actions of our lives and our minds as well.
We aren't talking music or Rock and Roll today but we are talking about the soul and the mind with the co-author Joshua P. Hochschild of the book Mind at Peace - Reclaiming an Ordered Soul in the Age of Distraction, .
The book is laid out to act as a good companion that we can turn to. Whether you are in need of comfort or virtue, a refresh of your moral compass or want to reawaken the sensations of the heart, body, mind and soul, you will want this book near you. Chapters give an opportunity for contemplation or active discernment with thought provoking questions to reflect on.

St. Gallen Mafia, Exposing the secret reformist Group within the Church
There is a somewhat obscure 8th century Irish Catholic Saint named Saint Gall who during the course of his life founded an Abby and Monastery in Switzerland, in a town now called St. Gallen which today is a Unesco World Heritage Site. It is said that near the end of his life, a bear became St. Gall’s only friend. The bear, it is said, brought him wood for his fire.
To this day, the Abbey still stands in the town of St. Gallen Switzerland. The image of a bear is on its Coat of arms. St. Gallen Mafia, Exposing the secret reformist Group within the Church, is the title of an intriguing, challenging and thought provoking book by Julia Meloni. She meticulously pieces together documented events and writings, surrounding power struggles within the Roman Catholic Church leading up too, and after the death of Saint Pope John Paul the second.
For a non Catholic it reads like a factual thriller and for the Catholic the book could feel more dire and be seen as the beginnings of the complete takedown of 2000 years of Catholic Tradition.

But who wants a manual for suffering? Who needs it? And What can we learn when we look at the very nature of suffering?

Today we Explore BioSpiritual Focusing.
The founders of Biospiritual Focusing are Peter Campbell and Edwin McMahon. These men had been trained in the spiritual tradition of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits.
With this common background they could appreciate the evolutionary spirituality of the two Jesuits, French Theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and German Karl Rahner, considered to be one of the most influential theologians of the 20th century.
Focusing, in itself, is inherently a body practice and this was not lost on the men who started BioSpiritual Focusing.
It is the human body which provides our most grounded spiritual link, both to the details of daily living as well as the mystery of an evolving universe.
Our body, which we so identify with mortality, is itself our conscious bridge into immortality! It is our precious “link” to the universe as a whole–and beyond!

Kennedy Hall's raw and revealing book about being a father and his conversion to living a traditional Roman Catholic life in these times. We talk about men and masculinity today and specifically the traits of being a man through the lens of traditional Catholic teaching. Almost any time we hear about masculinity these days somewhere very near the word masculinity we see the word TOXIC.
Focusing is all about discovery. We use Focusing to connect with and resolve the uncomfortable places within ourselves. Anyone who has gone on a journey of self understanding knows it that takes great effort to look at yourself honestly. What you find is not always pretty, transformation is often painful.

Sister Jade, a Carmelite Hermitess in waiting, is the woman behind the website “Mary’s Secretary” and is here to speak with me about her time as a cloistered nun and her book book, The Practice of the Presence of Mary - “To Live and Die with Mary”. Meet the woman who bore the name Sister Rosa Maria of the Sorrowful Heart, she at this moment is known to me simply as Sister Jade. We are hearing her at an incredible moment in time. She entered the monastic life of Carmel, lived it, has written a book about her experiences and is about to embark on the life of a hermitess. What does this mean?
Well, it means that some time in the very near future, she will not be giving interviews, she will not be checking e-mail, she will not be speaking on the telephone, watching TV or anything else to do with modern living. She will actually disconnect from it all and devote her life entirely to Our Lady.

This episode is about the Law of Attraction and our guest today Author Jan H. Stringer has been working with that principle improving the lives of people in their personal and business relationships.
Before becoming a curious podcaster, into biohacking and psychology, as a young child, Mads Fris was always driving his family members crazy, He played sports at high level and began a curiosity journey which eventually lead to him discovering books by Dalai Lama to Anthony Robbins.
His constant curiosity to learn more and desire to contribute to a more positive and fun way of learning about these subjects is the drive behind his podcast Growth Island.
Ch- ch- ch- ch- Changes. That single word changes, stuttered at us by David Bowie in his hallmark song Changes piped into my ears and hit me, maybe like a lot of other people hit me, me-directly. I was one of those people, feeling like the world and everything around me was changing and now, someone else was somehow telling it back to me, letting me know that they were feeling it too.
Telling everybody what we were all feeling at the same time. I know you all want to hear the song now but I can only play you seven seconds without infringing copyright, so here is a little refresher. Ah. Well. Changes were happening before that song was released and it was at the university of Chicago where a group of Dr. Gene Genlin’s Psychology students needed a pace to work out some things. They began meeting to discuss the changes going on around them and these early groups, which predate Focusing as a formal practice. A community formed and that community began working with Focusing in group setting. One of the people who was right there and will describe her experiences is Dr. Kathy McGuire who was a student of Dr. Eugene Genlin at the time.
Dr. Kathy McGuire got a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Chicago, working directly with Dr. Eugene Gendlin. She was a Focusing-Oriented Therapist and workshop facilitator for 40 years. Her many articles and manuals can be found at her website for Creative Edge Focusing, www.cefocusing.com. As a cofounder of the original Changes Listening/Focusing Community in 1971, Dr. McGuire sees Empathic Listening and Experiential Focusing as co-equal skills. From her experience, a Changes Community is a training laboratory in how to live in community, how to overcome prejudice and increase tolerance for difference and uniqueness.
People can practice, not only Focusing, but interpersonal conflict resolution and group decision making using Listening /Focusing skills.
Want to hear more about Focusing? HELLO. and welcome to the Focusing Way, podcast. I’m your host, David Battistella. So, What is focusing? Why is it so great? What got me into focusing? How has it helped me? These are all the types of questions this podcast aims to peer into and not so much answer, but be with and explore. First, a bit about me. I’m a filmmaker who’s been a part of many creative processes in film. I first got into documentary filmmaking because of the possibility that every film is like continuing education. I want every film I embark on to be like a new university course and I have used documentary filmmaking to extend my curiosity and to share stories. Filmmaking has taken me all over the world but focusing helped take me on a journey into myself, a way of better understanding me. So what is this podcast about? It’s a bit like a documentary film that follows new lines of inquiry and discovers new things. Here, I aim to have what I call, “focusing oriented conversations” with people who teach and practice focusing. And it’s through these conversations that I hope you can learn about all the beautiful things I’ve learned and I continue to learn about focusing. In this podcast episode you will hear about -who I am -what brought me to focusing -what this podcast aims to achieve LISTEN ON STITCHER SUBSCRIBE IN ITUNES LEARN FOCUSING TAKE A LEVEL ONE FOCUSING CLASS LISTEN TO RADICAL GENTLENESS
When I was in my twenties I had a series of profound dreams. They were the kind of dreams that left you feeling as though you had travelled through millions of miles of fiber-optic cable engaging with every particle in the universe. As amazing as I felt when I awoke, there was a problem. I was never able to remember much about the interactions or spaces in the dreams but I always came away with one feeling or one phrase. This is the phrase: Build a strong body. Each and every night I went to bed knowing I'd be going on this journey. It was like someone or something was shaking me, pounding this message into my brain. Every morning I would awake with the message. Build a strong body. What did it mean? Build a strong body. Of course, I had not been involved in Focusing to this point, but strangely I completely understood the message. It helped me understand that one thing that would carry me throughout this life is my own body. It had never dawned on me before. It would be with me the whole way, it will serve me. So, it got me thinking about how to honour the body. In my thirties and before focusing it was all about exercise, food, and taking care of this vessel. The word vessel is important because it helped me begin to think about my body as a ship for my soul. My emotions could be in the hull and I was on this timeless journey and adventure. It became very easy to take care of my ship and along the way, by and large I have tried to build a strong body and this message has stayed with me for twenty years, sometimes stronger than others. Revisiting this idea as a focuser has given me a new kind of outlook on this phrase. The whole idea is to continue to honour the body. We might have a mind, but it is the body that carries us through life. It's the only vessel for a journey and it has an amazing wisdom and high tech navigating system. Focusing is a way into the room on the ship which holds this high tech navigation system. I've come to learn that this exists in me and I believe it exists in other people. For me, focusing has been the way into this space and it has allowed me to navigate this ship (my body) in a way that is more than just a ship in a storm. Now, I feel I have built a body that is like a ship that can navigate the storm. A very precious ship. A bit about Focusing Oriented Conversation Focusing oriented conversation came to be with a focusing partner of mine. There were times when there was just too much, and many things needed to be verbalized or "talked through" in order to get enough space to go beneath the surface and get to what was happening underneath. This can also be known as story. But how do we honour story and let it have it's place in Focusing? We sort of found that by setting aside focusing time, we could use that time to hold space, listen and have respectful conversation. Focusing language could enter the conversation, or not, but it was an important step in process. We wanted to bring all the qualities of inner relationship focusing to a conversation. I had found that sometimes early on in the focusing process, a lot of body feeling brings a need to express many ideas that are firing all at once as focusing begins to open up new possibilities and the body begins to communicate now that it is being listened too. I think it's quite common as you delve further into inner relationship focusing work. So we set aside some time was used as a kind of "conversational interactive focusing" and it was very helpful to both parties. Sometimes, it's nice to just talk in a focusing way, and that is what focusing oriented conversation is. It wasn't a formal focusing session, but it could sometimes help get over certain humps that arise from time to time. Then you could get back to your regular focusing and sense freshly into what you are feeling. If it feels and sounds right to you then I could suggest you try it. It's a work in progress, a discovery into a style of focusing with inner-relationship at it's core. You can even do it one way, while you are in a conversation with someone else. It's a really nice way to cultivate self in presence. It's also a really nice way to introduce focusing to people who are curious about the experience but not quite ready to dive into full blown focusing sessions. Maybe they just want to talk a bit about what is happening with them. Of course this can obviously lead to focusing if it feels right, but it can also act as an intermediate step toward more formal process. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="305"] ME, WE. What a powerful combination.[/caption] Focusing and Boxing? The Focusing Way Podcast - Helping you live in a focusing way. In this episode David brings together what might seems like a strange "combination" by looking at what in the world focusing and boxing might have in common. What does a boxer have to do with focusing? How can we talk about a peaceful, gentle practice like focusing in the same breath as a brutal and barbaric sport like boxing. The key is not to judge. When Muhammad Ali uttered his now famous two word poem, "me, we" it gave me pause to reflect and to contemplate the power in the short two words and how it maybe even relates to Focusing and Focusing process. It also made me think about boxing in a focusing way and to contemplate how much focusing any athlete at the top of their game must be doing naturally. Athletes are so in tune with their bodies that focusing can be a natural extension for them since they are already in the process of "listening" to their bodies daily and even hourly to be able to peak perform on a given time or day. Boxing is especially interesting because of the amount of physical duress the boxer trains their body for. LISTEN ON STITCHER SUBSCRIBE IN ITUNES
Focusing , the body and Italy In this episode, David explores how living in a focusing way has helped him better understand Italians and helped him navigate life in a new country. Do Italians gravitate naturally toward focusing? I've been living in Italy since the year 2011 and observing Italians in a Focusing way and it has been an interesting experience. We often say in Focusing that slowing down is the fastest way there and perhaps nowhere is this more true than in Italy. The country, the Italians have a different pace and a different way of being. One might dismiss this if one where looking at it from a purely cultural perspective, but I would like to consider it positively and in a Focusing way. In Italy, people speak with their hands. There is much that is communicated through the combination of the spoken word and the gesture or movement to accompany it. While it might partially be because Italian has about 200,000 words compared to 600,000 in English, (which might explain the movement to make up for lost words) I believe it is due to a connectedness that Italians have to the body. It is a physical culture. LISTEN ON STITCHER SUBSCRIBE IN ITUNES LEARN FOCUSING TAKE A LEVEL ONE FOCUSING CLASS LISTEN TO RADICAL GENTLENESS
Today on The Focusing Way Podcast I speak with Karen Liebenguth of Green Space Life Coaching. Karen Liebenguth is an experienced life coach, certified Focusing practitioner, an accredited mindfulness teacher and a certified Myers Briggs Type Indicator facilitator. She works with private and corporate individuals and groups to foster personal growth and sustainable change. She set up Green Space Coaching in 2008 to offer coaching while walking in London’s parks and green space tapping into the benefits nature has on our psychological, emotional and physical well-being. She believes that it is in nature where reflection, insight and change can happen most naturally. Bringing Focusing into her coaching work has been delightful and powerful as she has witnessed over the past three years subtle and profound shifts in her clients. From feeling very stuck or stressed to considerably feeling very different, for example more open, spacious, able to have perspective, to have choices, possibilities, feeling more calm, grounded, soft, relaxed, expanded. Notable quote Eugene Gendlin, once said, when he spoke to hundreds of psychotherapists at an international congress: "I want to start with the most important thing I have to say: The essence of working with another person is to be present as a living being. And that is lucky, because if we had to be smart, or good, or mature, or wise, then we would probably be in trouble. But, what matters is not that. Highly Sensitive Introvert Emily Agnew in her own words I’m a certified Focusing teacher and guide, writer, and consultant working with highly sensitive introverts (read more about high sensitivity here). I use Focusing to create the listening space they need to flourish. Why highly sensitive introverts? I happen to be one myself, and I’ve spent thirty years experimenting with ways to overcome the anxiety that often accompanies the trait. So I’ve been a natural fit for clients struggling with similar issues. And why Focusing? My own story is a poignant answer to that question. I didn’t have anything like Focusing as a child. I loved learning at school, but with the long hours, the crush of people, the noise, and even the smells, I’d come home dazed and exhausted. I craved my classmates’ company and mutual understanding, but I was wounded to the core by criticism or disapproval so I kept myself apart for fear of being judged and focused on being a good student. I had no idea how to manage all these strong feelings and reactions. As a result, I suffered daily from anxiety. I hid it fairly well through high school, but part way into my five-year stint as an oboist with the Honolulu Symphony, it got bad enough that I started looking for help. I became a student of Zen meditation and established a yoga practice. I studied Nonviolent Communication, Inner Bonding, and The Work of Byron Katie. As I began to share my insights with others, all these modalities were helpful. But Focusing has turned out to be the most powerful tool for me and for my sensitive, introverted clients. To us, Focusing is like a Swiss Army knife sprinkled with catnip. It is not just pragmatic and elegant: it is irresistible. It is irresistible because we sensitive introverts need meaning, depth, and authenticity the way plants need water and sunlight—and Focusing takes you directly there. As you encounter meaning, depth, and authenticity within yourself, you find clarity where there was murk, and next steps where there was confusion. Even better, you find that meaningful connection I so craved since my school days. It arises naturally when you focus with a partner or with a trained guide. To a highly sensitive introvert, Focusing is simply a life-saver. We flourish when we get all the listening space we need. We wilt and lose courage without it. That’s why I want to get Focusing skills to as many sensitive introverts as I can. I write a Focusing-oriented weekly e-zine and blog, The Listening Post, for sensitive introverts. I work with clients by phone and Skype, and I create programs and communities to serve sensitive introverts with relationship issues, decision-making, self-care, creativity, happiness and more. Honor the Body In focusing we like to honor the body, or you might hear people talking about honoring the body. As we become empowered focusers this process becomes easier and easier. As you deepen your focusing process, It's easy to end a focusing session with gratitude, to be grateful to thank the body because we are constantly discovering with focusing that our sense of rightness lies directly within us. By entering into a focusing state and coming into relationship with the wisdom of our own body we change how we are in the world and that means we change how we carry forward and how we can be. Focusing gives us the time to check in with what is going on within ourselves and how we feel about what is going on with life situations or relationships. It's also a way to get inside and ask, to wander and explore and as a creative person this has been a real treat for me. Focusing can allow you to be the artist or the conductor of your own life in a way you might not think possible. But just back to how to honor the body for a moment. When we move from the slowing down and usefulness of focusing in a controlled setting to moving into living in a focusing way the concept of honoring the body begins to become one of several key aspects to living in a focusing way. The first and simplest way to live in a focusing way is to hone the body through what you put into it. Yes, I mean how you feed yourself and what you eat. The very food we eat and the three meals a day are great moments to pause and reflect. It's the moment to ask questions. I s this right for me right now? Is this what I want right now? How hungry am I really? what would be the right food and the right amount? All of these questions lead you right into a "focusing way of being" and it also means you are taking an important step toward honoring the body. Why? Because you are respecting your body enough to ask it's opinion. The body, in the end is you. You in the end are the body and there is a communion we can feel with our bodies when we are honoring it moment to moment. The body responds and listens and the body will tell you what to do, how to do it. It's all coming from within you and the feeling and sensations you are feeling in the body are the ones that carry that wisdom. You can imagine it as an organic super computer jammed into every cell and fiber. Everything is in relationship. All kinds of miraculous systems are in place to give YOU life, to let YOU walk through experiences. To let you live. So is it hard to honor the body? This body you have been given regulates so much for you it takes in air, move blood around and in your greatest stillness your body is moving millions of pieces around every second. When we step back and really sense into what the body provides along with the wisdom focusing helps you access, the "job" of listening to the body and honoring the body becomes more a joy than a chore, more gratitude sets in, deeper understanding. That's all housed in this wonderful living, breathing system that produces our experiences. How can we not honor that? Do not Quit just yet. Open! Have you ever been there? You know. That place where you just want to quit. Maybe it's your job? Maybe it's the relationship you are in? Maybe it's school, the book club, whatever. We have all probably hit that point where the pressure of a situation becomes unbearable, when it seems there are few solutions or when it seems the only solution is to quit. What has focusing taught me about these moments and how can focusing help you in these moments? Well, what I have come to learn is that this is a great moment. The moment of wanting to quit hits everyone and quitting is sometimes the very best choice given the situation. As I have sat with this question in a focusing way in my own life, an interesting answer came to me and I want to share it with you. I won't take you through the whole session but I finally arrived at a point where the message became very clear and what I was being shown is that this moment was a great opportunity to open. Maybe it was a bit clearer than that even. What was coming for me was the idea that this was exactly the time I should be more open, that this was a time that I should maybe use the opportunity as a chance to turn toward things from a different perspective to allow my thinking around the situation to open. It was letting me know that I could see this whole situation around quitting as a chance to explore something else. Really what it was giving me was a chance to be open about a situation rather than be closed, which is the way I was perceiving the quitting, as a way to close a situation, walk away from it or end it and not fully engaging in the possibilities it quittin was presenting. Quitting can be quite final, in this case it was a starting point. Quitting might be the point at which people turn back after a long journey, or really maybe it's like a door that is ready to be opened. And sometimes we quit when we have arrived at the doorstep and then quitting rears it's ugly head.
By now some of you might ask; but what if I want to quit something? Is that OK? Of course that is ok Let's take smoking as an example. That might be a thing where you do want to quit or stop. And you do, you stop, you quit and it's hard. I should know, way back I used to smoke and when I smoked I liked it but something was really letting me know it was time to quit. So I did, many, many, many times. In my case, I kept getting to the point where I wanted to quit, "quitting smoking" and I would smoke again. Do you see where I am going with this? I kept arrving at a new quitting moment. That moment was the moment I wanted to quit and give up, I was quitting NON-smoking! And I kept on quitting and giving in to that feeling of wanting to smoke and instead of getting over the hump and BEING OPEN, I would fall back into smoking and a new cycle of wanting to quit smoking. Looking at that situation now. I was being open enough to the idea of quitting smoking, actually getting to the point of doing it and then giving in to it, or quitting being a non-smoker. Now I know there is a lot of chemical stuff going on with this kind of addiction and that is a physical thing that Focusing would have probably helped a lot with at the time as well.
I didn't know focusing then and I finally quit with the help of hypnosis. I have never smoked since. So, it's interesting to be at these points of quitting and they are usually driven by a deep wanting that is WAY beyond wanting to quit the particular thing and that is why I encourage you to learn focusing, because the next time you come up to one of these quitting moments, you might find that it is a great chance to open up, to see what else is there for you, to get in touch with the things that might be lurking just underneath or way beneath the surface that might be a key to understanding what drives all of this. You might just find that thing within you that takes you on a different path, or better yet you might discover something that was helpful and hidden that you never knew. You might go through the process and find that quitting is the absolute right thing and obviously that is OK too. The important thing is the process and allowing it to play out from within you. Quitting can be a jumping off point to stay the course or to move on, but if you make that decision in a focusing way, then you are sure to make it from a place in you that is right for you in that moment, leading you to what is next. Download to listen later THE POWER OF ACTIVE LISTENING IN THE FOCUSING PARTNERSHIP David Battistella The importance of focusing partnership reads like a list of cliches but they are all absolutely essential and valid. The partnership is based on trust, understanding, knowledge, respect and commitment. These are the same foundations the guide and client relationship are based on. One could easily include these things inside the general umbrella of focusing values as well. These are, of course, the qualities we want to bring to focusing partnership. The focusing partnership is a subtle and non judgemental commitment. The commitment is not only to be other focused, but also a sort of commitment one makes to oneself. A commitment to look inside, to be present, to listen and to hold space for things within you or for your focusing partner. Obviously there is a commitment to set and respect times, and to be a participant in the sessions. It is important to respect the appointed times and give proper notice if those times can not be respected. In focusing in general much is made of the role of the focuser and how essential it is to honor and respect the focusing space and to in some way assist, even in absolute silence, the focusing process. These are all correct and essential tools one brings to the focusing process, but it is the role of the listener that can deepen and empower the process further. Listening, or a process I call "active listening", to be a bit more precise is a crucial skill to refine and hone while in focusing partnership. When combined with reflecting words back to the focuser it makes for a powerful process. Developing tremendous focusing skill involves developing this skill I call “active listening”. I would describe this as “active focusing” as well. Self in presence while in the role of the listener is an essential component but active listening will make anyones process a richer and deeper experience. What do I mean? Well, the better we become at listening and active listening along with holding space, while we are engaged in the focusing process as the listener, the better a focuser we can become. This is accomplished through applying the very principles of our active listening skills during our own focusing process. As we become great partners and great listeners for other people, so too must we apply this way of being to our own parts and our own focusing process. In our, self in presence listening process, we become greater listeners to our own internal stirrings. To some people this may come very naturally, but some might also be missing fantastic opportunities for growth by refining their listening skills while actively engaged in the role of the listener. In focusing partnership we take turns to be the focuser, but this also means we take turns being the listener. This can sometimes be overlooked and people can look at their time as the listener as a “chance to relax a bit” and sit back and support the focuser in their process in the way the focuser has decided. What can one do to enhance their own focusing skills during a listening process? There are things a listener can do to become better listeners? Here are some things you might want to try to enhance and deepen the way you active listen. Listen for the focusers rhythm. This means getting a true sense of their voice and understanding where it is coming from in their body. Is their voice in the throat, the chest, the belly? Where is that physical voice coming from? Is it high, low, hidden, scared, quiet, evasive, full, welcoming? The answer may help you better understand the kind of process a focuser is in. Listen for the breaths. Is the focuser breathing at a regulated pace? Are they holding their breath? does their breathing seem deep or shallow? Can you hear feel or listen for shifts in the focusers process through the breath or their breathing. Pay attention to the silences What is happening in the silences? It is important to distinguish between “active silence” and “drifting silence”, active silence is when you can sense there might be something more and so you might hold off a reflection for an extra second or two for that thing to materialize. Drifting silence might be when you sense a drifting away quality to their connection and the reflection can be used to gently bring the focuser back to their process or a place where they were prior to the “drift” or drifting away. Either way it is important not only to listen, but to feel for these moments and also check with your self to assess them correctly. As listeners we want to enhance process and often that can be doing as little as possible. Of course we always need to be in tune with the focuser and in focusing partnership we can refine that frequency over a period of months or years. One of my current focusing partnership has been going on without interruption for five years, still I approach every hour we set aside for focusing or listening with the same care and gentleness I have from the onset and I have sought to deepen and enhance these skills. Focusing partnership is important for the working professional as well. The partnership allows a working professional to set aside deliberate and non paid focusing to further develop their focusing skills and also to have a focusing time set aside for things which might arise in their practice from time to time. Knowing that there is an ongoing support system in the form of focusing partnership gives the focuser and working professional a support system and continuity. The partnership and particularly the role of the listener is rich, precious space which should be honoured and maintained using the focusing values described I described earlier. Be open, listen deeply, respect and honor process and more importantly the human being in front of you.
Download to listen later Are you the universe? Here is a quote from Gene Gendlin that allows us a tiny peek into his philosophy and an understanding of the depth and power of the focusing process. It's also a view into how the universe might lie right within us. In this episode, I thought I would take a simple paragraph from Gene Gendlin's original book on focusing and break it down into a few parts to help explain what we are talking about when in focusing we talk about "the body". First off, heres it the quote and then we will break it down. Gendlin from the his book - Focusing “When I use the word “body” I mean more than the physical machine. Not only do you physically live the circumstances around you but also those you only think of in your mind. Your physically felt body is in fact part of a gigantic system of here and other places, now and other times, you and other people. In fact, the whole universe. This sense of being bodily alive in a vast system is the body and it is felt from inside.” Ok, so here goes. Gene starts this paragraph by letting us in on how he perceives the word body, both as it relates to the organism and focusing as a whole. Right off the bat he is expanding the idea of what most people think the body is. Some might divide the organism into parts, the body being one of them. But here Gene states. "When I use the word body I mean more that the physical machine. " It's an important distinction and a perspective shifting moment. I'll share a personal story of an experience I had with a cardiologist once. I had been reading a lot and following "Heartmath" a research institute in California dedicated to discovering heart intelligence. The initial thought was to connect the fact that the heart and brain develop at about the same pace in the fetus and that the heart has the second highest number of electrical impulse points compared to the brain. The overall idea is that the heart has its own intelligence that informs the body or own thoughts, emotions and sentiments. I was so excited to share this idea with a cardiologist I had met at a dinner party but I was left a bit shocked at the response. "bah," he said, "it's just a muscle, it's a pump, that's it. There is nothing else." I gasped and kept quiet. But, it was informative, because we humans can can use our analysis skills and rational thought process to form any kind of reality. Now, I happen to believe that the heart is a lot more than just a pump or a muscle, especially since I have had many focusing experience which generate directly from the heart space and the feeling, thoughts, images and sensations that come from that part of the body. So, this paragraph reminded me of that experience, here Gene is saying, "listen here, when I say body, I mean a lot more than a machine." He is opening us up to the whole, to more, to possibility. Next he adds, "Not only do you physically live the circumstances around you but also those you only think of in your mind." Here, I feel Gene is connecting things to the whole, he is bringing the body and our thoughts into one experience. He is also beginning to lay out a foundation, one that reminds us that we are connected to all things. Everything from Religion to Quantum Physics has been expounding on this idea in man's never ending search for identity. Here Gene reminds us that we live in the outside world and our inside world simultaneously, while reminding us that "circumstances" can also be a creation within our own thoughts or though patterns. Next sentence. Your physically felt body is in fact part of a gigantic system of here and other places, now and other times, you and other people. Wow! That really expresses the wholeness of an individual and the way in which we, as individuals are part of what he describes as a "gigantic" system, one that spans time and space, "here and other places, now and other times". What a beautiful sentiment to lay down about the body, that the body, and we, are the sum of so many things, that we carry the wholeness of time, place and space inside ourselves. Here Gene might really be telling us about the possibility of the human life force and also he shares its capacity. We are GIGANTIC, which might not even be a word that expresses what we are largely enough. The idea that we are this container that is huge and ever expanding. Which leads us directly to: "In fact, the whole universe. This sense of being bodily alive in a vast system is the body and it is felt from inside.” Here we can connect whole whole universe to the being, but also Gene is expressing each individual as being, "bodily alive" within a "vast system" but at the same time he understands the individual and personal nature of this feeling because the experience is "felt from the inside". This is of course, just a small taste of what Gene has shared about his philosophy and in one paragraph he is expressing what the focusing experience can lead us to understand about our inner connections, our inner workings and the whole universe. We have the capacity to experience ALL OF THIS, from within the body, that carbon unit that we may sometimes believe is just meat and bones, and blood, muscle and nerve. Something tells me that we, that you are a lot more. He might even be giving us a glimpse into the thought that thing that ties it all together is us, or that the capacity for us to express and live through our body in this place, from this deep focusing well. Is this very fabric of the thing we like to refer to as the human experience. IN this one paragraph Gene implies so much about where, who and what we are, but it also allows us to approach our own focusing work from the realm of great personal capacity and limitless possibility. Five sentences, when strung together in this way, describes a philosophy and opens a doorway into the me. Is Focusing your little secret? Or do you carry any kind of little secret. You know the good things, maybe the guilty pleasures or maybe you keep the things that give you an edge secret, so no one else can muscle in on whatever that thing is. Well, I have a small confession to make. Until recently Focusing, was my little secret and only through focusing did I come to understand why I wanted to keep the focusing part of my life, which is way more than just a part, somewhat secret. I sort of started out by asking myself a few key questions about focusing and how it related to the rest of my life. I realised that I was kind of keeping focusing to one side, using it for my own benefit, but maybe not sharing my joy or my knowledge of it as fully as I could. So these were the questions that were coming up for me. How open are you about your focusing work when talking about it with other people? It's a question that came to me one morning while I was exercising and of course, allowing my body to fall into the rhythm of focusing. So I sat with it a while and so much came up around it. First, something came up around the idea that I had been using focusing as a little secret. Then a few questions came. Was I a little embarrassed to talk about it? What were people going to think? That I was practicing some kind of "self help"? Was my upbringing getting in the way and creating a kind of judgement I might think others perceive around anything to do with helping oneself live life fuller, feel better and gain a deeper understanding? All of this was there. It was very present but I just sat with it as I was exercising. Just a note on exercise. If you can get past the whole idea of the physical struggles that come with exercise and perhaps focus on breathing or the movement or imagining you r movement, then you can get into another layer, one that is very contemplative and it is quite amazing how rapidly and frequently the body will respond and present information. For those of you who have ever done any running and described it as meditative or a relaxing experience, what I am trying to describe is a lot like that but it becomes much more proactive as focusing is a very active, listening and relating and proactive process. So then the question came. Something in me was presenting this question: Is focusing a secret I was keeping? Or perhaps it is something I was practicing but did not want to share. Then, something in me helped me realise that I was sort of selfishly keeping the focusing space quiet and private because it was a fantastic and glorious internal space that is entirely my own. At times being in the quiet focusing space is the only quiet time we get. Focusing time can be a refuge and also a great way to engage in inner dialog about anything you want to bring to the process. It's the only place where we can slow down to a point of truly listening and understanding what is going on and to take the time, one by one, to listen and explore what is going on for us. We have all probably experienced at one time or another, guilty pleasures. Don't we usually keep those things very private and intimate? We tend not to share those things perhaps because we don't want anyone to take it away from us. Sometimes we do it through food, secret relationships, spending or shopping, quiet drives in our car away from family and friends. We all tend to long for and want to experience these intimate moments with ourselves as a way of getting lost or getting reacquainted with or organising our thoughts and actions. The reality for me is that through focusing I can enter into that space at any moment, within any context and any situation. Through practice we can find ourselves "living in a focusing way". Then the words we shown to me. Spread the word! I've been focusing for almost eight years and I have to say that I while my focusing has been enormously beneficial, allowing me to make major changes in my life and to tap into the wisdom of how I want to live my life and my own sense of rightness, I have to say that I haven't shared it all that much with the exception of genuinely curious people. This podcast is a testament to how what starts as an action block turns into a very pleasurable activity after focusing and finding just the right thing. In the midst of all this active focusing the body just began showing me what was right. What was right, was to write about this and share it. And as I share these words a whole world of good is coming over me, both internally and externally. What a simple but powerful process I've come to know and I hope you come to know, known as Focusing. Download to listen later Business Strategies & Focusing I want to share with you a business strategy I discovered recently. Just recently I had the opportunity to sit for a short focusing session which was going to last about ten minutes. I know that many people might feel that they need a long time to "get into" the focusing mode, but my experience has been that I have had many very powerful short sessions. While I hold firm to the focusing adage, "slowing down is the fastest way there", I have to say that, devoting even just a short time to focusing can yield very powerful results. This is what happened. As I invited the idea of what I could focus with for this brief session a thought or feeling wandered over me about a meeting that I had scheduled for the next morning. Just that small invitation to my body of, "Hmm, what should I focus with right now?" brought me, out of the blue, the idea that there was something I needed to look at more closely around the meeting I had scheduled in the morning. So, I decided to ask for a short lead in to discover what would come, or what wanted to be known about the meeting. At first I even had a thought toward, what could possibly come, but I let that part of me sit to one side and I committed to invite what wanted to be known about this meeting. This in itself is a beautiful focusing moment. That thing that came out of the ether (or from with me) that wanted to look more closely at the morning meeting was acknowledged and almost as rapidly, something else comes along to try to negate or discredit that feeling. So, for the record, be aware of both things and check to see what that the original idea wants to express. This is how focusing happens in milliseconds and you need to be aware of the light speed at which this inner wisdom operates. Focusing itself requires that you sharpen those inner listening skills. Things do happen in milliseconds. Don't believe me? How many times have you made a poor decision after you had already decided to make the correct one for you? I'll give you a simple example using ice cream. Your first instinct is toward chocolate. The person with you orders chocolate, something in you waffles and go for vanilla. You sit down to have you ice cream, the vanilla is OK but when you try the chocolate you wish you had stuck with your gut. Point is. Here is how you might do that in a Focusing way. Your first instinct is toward chocolate. The person with you orders chocolate, something in you waffles and go for vanilla. Now, you stop and recognize, "something want's chocolate AND something else wants Vanilla" and you acknowledge both. Just by acknowledging both you are now in presence, you realize there are two things there, in this case choices and you sit with them both, moving toward the one that feels right to you in that moment. Maybe you go for the chocolate, maybe the vanilla, but the important thing is that you noticed and acknowledged both were present. Its this kind of awareness your focusing practice can bring. Among many other things of course. Now, there I was listening to a lead in and inviting what wanted to come around this business meeting. Almost immediately my inner sense corrects me and refines the idea. It's about what qualities I want to bring to this meeting. Ah, this part of me is communicating that what this is about is the qualities it wants me to bring to the meeting. So, I sit with it, listen. This thing is presenting around the middle of my chest and stomach as a kind of vague but pleasant warm sensation. From that warmth comes the sense that one quality I should be bringing to the meeting is warmth. As I check that back, that fits because I actually like the person I'm set to meet with and something there is reminding me to bring the quality of warmth. As I sit with it some more, the same sense starts to open up and share a bit more about the qualities to bring to the meeting. I'm inviting these feelings, or more things to come. As, I do that the word sharing comes. As I check in with that, it's letting me know the word sharing is a quality I could bring to this meeting. And I end up saying, "yeah!, I really want to share details about a project with this person" This ends up leading to other feelings like gratitude. As I check with that I am actually grateful this person is giving me some time to share some thoughts and ideas, so that is there too. As I let all of that be there, I realize that a whole meeting strategy based on warmth, sharing and gratitude are very present and the original question is being answered from a very genuine place within me. I sit with all of that and I close out this short session by asking my body to remind me to bring all of this to the meeting tomorrow and to let me know anything else between now and then. So, now here I was, in a whole new place and with a whole new strategy and idea about an important meeting that goes way beyond a checklist of materials or information and to the essence of what a great meeting can be about, which is an exchange that leaves both parties energized. This is just one of many example of how focusing can put you in the place of authentic experiences and when you are being authentic there is a good chance others will notice that. Just ten minutes of focusing on a subject that could have been a fleeting thought, turned out to remind me to bring me and certain qualities to the table at a meeting. The meeting, you ask? How did it go? I'll tell you what you are already sensing. It was a huge success. LISTEN ON STITCHER SUBSCRIBE IN ITUNES LEARN FOCUSING TAKE A LEVEL ONE FOCUSING CLASS LISTEN TO RADICAL GENTLENESS

Both are Focusing Trainers who are exploring new and interesting ways of including Focusing as part of their daily work. Customarily, in Focusing we do not associate physical touch with the practice. It would not “normally” be considered a part of a focusing exchange or partnership. Adding physical touch could break an implied “touch barrier” and could possibly infringe on the safety of the boundaries set out in Focusing practice and partnership as most of us understand it. Anastasia and Jack are both body workers. Anastasia holds a Master's in Applied Psychophysiology, an undergrad degree in social work. Jack holds Master’s degree in counseling. Jack, among other things, is a teacher of body workers and other caregivers and Anastasia, among other things, teaches body workers and has a background as a social worker in domestic violence. Both are licensed massage practitioners and have taught professional classes combining touch and Focusing. What happens when the add Focusing to a bodywork practice and appropriate touch to a Focusing practice? Jack and Anastasia have come together to create Focusing courses for body workers and using Focusing to create a bridge between body workers and verbal therapists. Their goals are first, to enable more client empowerment and body-centered awareness… second, to use the principles of Focusing to support mutual understanding between the different caregiving professions. Download to listen later FOCUSING TOWARD A POSITIVE LIFE A thought about carrying forward If you understand focusing and if you have even done a bit of it yourself by now, you probably have realized that when you enter a focusing space within a focusing session, you eventually confront some tough situations. It certainly has been true for me. I have keenly centred my focused around many life situations, relationships, things I wanted to resolve and the answers and feelings around life’s biggest questions. That is all fun and good and healthy. It is a journey I would encourage anyone to go on. The journey inside, the path toward self exploration can be daunting, but can also be very rewarding. Focusing has a special power as an adjunct to therapy and as a practice to assist with grief, deep trauma, depression, addiction and difficulties life throws our way. As I have explored the focusing world, I have come across all of these things and focused with many of them. It feels to me like focusing is at a moment. I’m not going to pinpoint an event or a circumstance, I am just going to say that Focusing has evolved, morphed at changed as it should and will. The “moment” I am talking about is just a sense I have, but it feels like it could be the time when focusing opens up to the world, becomes a bit more widely know and is well, for lack of a better term, mainstreamed. This is what I want for Focusing. I want focusing to be mainstream. I want it to be taught as a lifeskill in schools from an early age. I want more people to be talking about it, I want more people to be learning it and I want people to teach it to others so that they can engage in the types of wonderful egalitarian relationships which can develop over time. Why? Well, the reason is simple. If I was Frederick Banting and had invented insulin, I would also give it to the world without a patent around it. Focusing is that kind of gift. With a few simple techniques and tools people can be more tuned in, much more attentive and able to connect deep within themselves for answers and a sense of rightness. I want to be clear here, I’m not talking about “specialized” people, I am not talking about trained people, I am not talking about Certified people, I am talking about ordinary people who gather, nurture and evolve their focusing skills over time. The other thing I would love to see is a big shift to using Focusing, not only to get out of a jam or a misfortunes we come across, but to use it the way I have, to make your everyday encounters better. Now, I know many of you might be saying, well that isn’t focusing, that is something else; that is mindfulness, attentiveness, awareness, but Focusing is all of that and more than all of those things in many ways. I know anyone listening to this has at some point come out of a focusing session with a major shift, an amazing feeling of change, a good feeling. That is what we want, right? Isn’t that where we want to bring Focusing? Not just to heal our deepest wounds but the surface cuts along the way as well. So it is with this idea that I am asking all of you to share with me some really positive stories about focusing which I can share on the podcast. You can write me an e-mail and I will read it on the podcast and you can do that anonymously or attributed as well. I have a small request for all of you. Use me. Help me get the greatest focusing stories out there through this podcast. I want to invite you to share with me all you best success’. No story is to old, too boring too fantastical or too bold. I feel we have to share, in a big way, are you up to it? David LISTEN ON STITCHER SUBSCRIBE IN ITUNES LEARN FOCUSING TAKE A LEVEL ONE FOCUSING CLASS LISTEN TO RADICAL GENTLENESS
Focusing and Physical Pain Focusing practice is explored in many ways. I myself have put it to the test in every aspects of my life, time and time again. One might think that going inside is more of spiritual or emotional practice, but one thing to remember about Focusing is that it is a body practice. It is all about going within, seeking answers and a sense of rightness that flows from within you.
Focusing is a BODY practice. It is not mediation. We are looking for places in our body where emotional “stuckness” presents itself. Once we “tune in” we can discover the multitude of ways our body communicates through sensations, images and feelings throughout the body. These places tend to present themselves from the area around the throat (and I invite you to check in to that place in you now) the heart space, the stomach and the whole center of us. Of course things can present in the head, as a headache, the neck as neck pain, back pain, cramps, muscle soreness. It’s all a part of how the body talks to us.
But what to we do? How do we Focus around Physical pain, the kind we might experience after a major injury or surgery. What role can Focusing play in the moments before, during and after an event like this in our lives. Early on in my Focusing life I had injured my calf muscle playing squash. At the time I thought that I had been hit in the back of the leg by the racquet of my squash partner. I was convinced that he had cracked the back of my calf with the snap of a bamboo rod. That my friends was pain. A shooting pain I had never really felt before that moment. Thankfully the injury did not require surgery, but it did give me the opportunity to examine the pain that was there.
I did not do this in an abstract way. I used Focusing techniques to get inside that injury, to be with it, to talk with it in some way and to understand some important things. One memory is something around putting your best foot forward another is about pushing to hard. The important thing is that through this Focusing I gained a bodily Understanding of what happened and I could take this knowledge and Focusing into the healing process. I learned something more about myself, about the before and after and about a new way of self healing that took into account the whole. Of course I saw doctors, homeopaths and other experts, but I included my Focusing in this healing as well. Since that time, I have applied this Focusing to various scenarios, from minor headaches to Flus, colds and Dental visits. Some of you might remember recent podcasts with Barbara Dickinson. I learned that Barbara was going to be having Hip replacement surgery. In our conversations I shared some ways I had used Focusing around physical pain. She also agreed that after the surgery she would share the many different ways she used Focusing before, during and after her Surgery.
