Atiyah McDaniels dropped out of college three times. The first time, she went for fashion designing. The second time, she went for business. The third time, she went for communications. It just wasn’t for her.

Literally 2 months after dropping out the last time, she had already started her hair business. People would always ask her where she would get her hair extensions from and thought that people should definitely pay her for it.

She set herself apart by creating a professional, upscale and chic brand right from the beginning. She used her sales skills to bring in revenue and by the end of the first year, she grew over 6 figures.

She’s not only in the hair business, but she’s also mentoring young entrepreneurs on how to start and grow their business.

I love Atiyah’s story because she took her life into her own hands. Most of us don’t realize it until we’re $30k in debt. If you’re out there looking for a different path, or you’re feeling like the life you’re living isn’t for you, you’ll love this episode!

Sierra Howard of the I Don't Do Budgets Podcast talks about how she went from 9k in debt to secretly paying it all off.

Sierra talks about how she started developing a really bad spending habit in college and how it got out of control. It got to the point where she was actually embarrassed to talk to her partner about how much debt she was in. I’m so happy she talked about this because so many of us hide our debt in shame instead of bringing it out to light.

Sierra took everything she learned and now helps people who are in a similar position as her get out of debt and grow their savings and investment portfolio.

Then, she started the I Don’t Do Budgets podcast to share stories, advice, and insight into how we look at money.

Here’s what we talk about:

  • How money is talked about in the Black Community
  • The moment she realized she needed to do something about her debt
  • How her experience has allowed her to make a business out of helping other people to get out of debt
  • Why Sierra doesn’t do budgets

Representation matters in all areas, but especially in modern media. In the last few years, we’ve seen a huge increase in the amount of online media created specifically for black women, but only a few have been created in a way that can capture the nuances, struggles, and challenges that we all face. Black Ballad has done this so well.

This is why I am so excited to have Tobi Oredein, founder of Black Ballad,a UK based digital platform for Black women on the podcast this week.

Black Ballad was created due to Tobi’s realization of the lack of diversity in mainstream media in the UK. Her goal with the platform is to “help Black women in Britain live their best lives”, and I am here for it!

Tobi’s journey to creating Black Ballad is also inspirational as it highlights the challenges that Black Women face in the media industry both as corporate professionals and entrepreneurs.

In this episode we talk about:

  • How Tobi created her media company
  • Tobi’s experiences as a Black Woman in the UK
  • What it is like to work with brands as a black woman
  • How to get sponsorships from major corporations

If you are interested in starting a business, creating a community, or making sacrifices for your dreams, this is the episode for you!

I'm sure you've heard the saying "You're the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with" by John Rahn. But how important is our community when it comes to being successful? I wanted to investigate how true this really was.

I looked at some research being done, and I found out that community and your environment play a huge role in how successful you are.

In a study done by the New England Journal of Medicine on obesity and social networks, researchers found that a person had a 57% chance of being obese if a close was obese. This shows just how much influence those around us have on who we become as people. But it's not only about our bodies.

The reality is that we spend our time and energy, which shape our subconscious mind, exposes us to new ways of thinking, and show us what's possible or not. We may even pick up new habits. So it's so important to make sure the people around us are bringing us closer to success and not further away from it.

I'm a big believer that we need people in our inner circle to support, challenge, and inspire us to do better, and that’s what we’re talking about in this live episode.

Here’s what we talk about

  • When I first realized how important your circle is
  • How to know if you have the right people around you
  • Why you should focus on creating a small circle of winners

In this episode, we’re speaking with Jessica Chinyelu about her journey from club promoting and working with Ciroc to helping influencers, podcasters, and other entrepreneurs with sponsorships. What I love about her story is that when you hear where Jessica started from, it’s hard to see how she transitioned to where she is now.

When you listen to the episode, you’ll be able to see the breadcrumbs and stepping stones that following her faith created.

Jessica’s journey is really important for those of us who are unsure about what our next step in life is, and for those of us who are unsure about what we’re able to accomplish because she shows that every step of the journey gives us the skills we need to get where we need to be. There are so many ways that we can use our skills and gifts, and I love that Jessica was not afraid to keep going and figure out what works for her!

AND as a bonus, Jessica is dropping so many gems around securing sponsorships, so if you’re an influencer or entrepreneur looking to work with brands, you’re going to get so much out of these episodes!

Here’s what we talk about

  • How having faith can actually help you achieve your goals
  • Why you don’t have to have it all figured out when you start
  • How to pivot in your career
  • The biggest misconceptions when it comes to getting sponsors
  • Why you don’t need a huge following to secure paid sponsorships

This week we are taking it back to one of my favorite episodes with business coach Jasmine Green.

A huge part of Jasmine's story is that she gave up an opportunity to go to Medical School. She realized it just wasn’t right for her. Just as quickly as Jasmine made that decision, she went from a path of financial and professional security as a doctor to starting over from scratch.

Jasmine went through a turbulent time trying to figure out what she was meant to do. She quickly got caught up in a bunch of dead-end jobs, just trying to survive. Jasmine had no sense of direction, identity, and was completely lost and alone.

She hit her rock bottom when she ended a relationship and had to up move back home with all of her belongings. For most people, this would have been enough to put aside any vision of a successful future, but Jasmine always knew that she was meant for more. So she put a plan in place to live the life she knew she deserved.

Jasmine’s story is so incredibly impactful because no matter what circumstances she was in, she never wavered from doing the work it takes to figure out one's purpose. She had so many career pivots before she got to where she is today.

Now, Jasmine is working as a successful 7-figure sales coach helping business owners reach multiple six figures. Her purpose is to help her clients become who they need to be to in order to earn the results they desire.

The best part of it all is, Jasmine no longer has to continue to seek and search for clients, opportunities, or income - they all come to her.

Here are some key takeaways

  • How to be secure in your decisionmaking
  • How to surround yourself with people and resources that are going to uplevel you
  • Why you need to listen to your intuition to discover your purpose

In this week's episode, we are diving into procrastination and how it affects us in our day-to-day lives. We all procrastinate, and it's not for the reasons you think.

We've heard the stories about it being in our nature or the fact that we work better under pressure.

BUT...

Studies show that the real reason for procrastination actually has to do with our emotions. It has more to do with not wanting to experience a certain emotion that we believe will manifest when we start doing what we're supposed to. Pretty deep right?

In this episode we discuss:

  • The real reasons why we procrastinate
  • Ways that we can clear our minds and “slay the procrastination dragon”
  • What the professionals have to say about procrastination and how we can fix it

If you suffer from procrastination the way I do, this episode may help you to understand that you’re not alone, and also give tips on how to be more productive and how to properly handle moments where procrastination is taking over.

This week I decided to take it back and rewind to the chat all about Impostor Syndrome and how it shows up in our lives and businesses especially. Impostor syndrome is something that I’ve dealt with in my previous career, as a wife, and in my current business. In this episode I discuss:

  • My battle with impostor syndrome and how I learned to manage it
  • What happens when impostor syndrome creeps in and how to “get rid of it”
  • How to recognize impostor syndrome when it shows up in your everyday life

In this episode, we’re talking to Kharmika Alston, a Former US diplomat who made a major career pivot into Real Estate.

Kharmika is the founder of Live, Love Durham, a real estate brokerage which believes in transforming our community and creating new cycles of generational wealth.

Before she made the Pivot, Kharmika’s job was working as a US diplomat across the world, including Mexico and Amsterdam. Right before her last appointment, she realized she couldn’t do it anymore. So she packed her bags, moved back to North Carolina, and began to figure out her next step.

She’s always wanted to invest and get serious about wealth generation, and she realized that housing prices in Durham NC were increasing. She wanted something that would give her the entrepreneurial aspect while being able to invest and help build generational wealth within her community.

It wasn’t easy. It was a lot of work, but she made it happen. You’ll hear Kharmika give the details on how to make it happen for yourself.

Super excited for this episode because it’s with one of my best friends, Shonitria Anthony. Shonitria is the founder of the Blunt Blowin’ Mama brand. It’s a podcast, clothing company, and movement for moms who smoke weed, and one of the few Black Woman-Owned brands in the weedpreneur industry.

What I love about Shonitria’s brand is that she dispels a lot of the myths around smoking weed during a pregnancy (and how that doesn’t make you a bad mom).

Not only this, but she’s sharing how she ended up getting into the weed industry, the challenges she’s faced, and the advice she gives to anyone wanting to get into this space.

Here’s what we talk about

We hit 100 episodes!!! I told myself when I started this podcast that I would do 100 episodes before I quit. First of all I didn’t think it would take this long to get to this point, but I also can’t believe what we’ve achieved.

Through all the hard work, frustration, wins, and losses, I always tried to maintain some sort of work-life balance. That was a struggle. Why? Because we’re so used to being overworked!

In this episode, I’m sharing some of the research that I did on why we feel the need to work ourselves to the bone, the health implications of this, and what we can do change our mindset.

If you find yourself using overworking as a badge of honor, this is for you!

Here’s what we talk about

  • The Black Superwoman Complex
  • Why overworking is a status symbol in 2021
  • How being overworked is shaving years off your life

If you’re looking to figure out how you can continue to climb the corporate ladder, live your best life and start your business, this episode is for you.

We had the opportunity to speak with our brand Jakiya Brown Thiaw, founder of The Travelingfro in this episode. Jakiya helped us with The Goal Standard brand, and we love sharing people we know who are amazing at what they do.

We talked to Jakiya about her incredible story, from growing up in North Carolina, to moving to NYC for her dream job at one of the biggest beauty brands in the world. Even at the points where most stories end, (dream job in the big city), Jakiya’s was just beginning.

After getting bit by the traveling bug, Jakiya took every opportunity she could to see the world until she realized she wanted to travel full time. She put a plan into place, packed her stuff, and went off on an adventure, slowly but surely creating a brand that would help her finance her adventures.

Now, Jakiya has settled on the content and focuses on helping struggling millennials turn their passion into a dream job and transition into a life of doing more of what they love. In other words, Jakiya is a brand wiz that helps millennial entrepreneurs get clear and focused on their brand.

We know because she did an incredible job at helping us at The Goal Standard get our whole life together

So if you’re trying to figure out if you should make the job into a new career path, or if you want tips on how to strengthen your personal or business brand, this episode is for you.

If you’ve scrolled through social media and seen the phrase #heyFRIEND, chances are you’ve come across Keisha Mabry. We loved this episode so much that we've brought it back around for you all to hear!

Keisha’s goal is to help you get connected to the people and resources needed to catch your dreams. Keisha does this as a speaker and through her book ‘ Hey Friend: 100 Ways to Connect to 100 People in 100 Days’. Most recently, she’s created her one-day conference in St. Louis called ‘MastHerclass’, A day of application and inspiration for entrepreneurs, creatives, and influencers in the Midwest.

Keisha shares her most important tips when it comes to networking as a black woman, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. She talks about finding what she loves to do, how speaking was the perfect way to get into entrepreneurship, and so much more.

What I love the most about this episode is that even though it wasn’t always easy, she always found a way to weave in her passion: Mission work and business into her career.

This week we are taking it back to a super informative episode! We are speaking with Ticora Davis of The Creator's Law Firm who talks to us about why it’s important for us to trademark our creations as people of color, and how to get it done as cost-effective as possible.

Ticora has actually helped me in the process of trademarking my brand properly. I’m sharing the story, what I went through, and what I learned through my big mistake of not trademarking my brand in the beginning.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through this experience, it’s that the culture vultures are lurking, listening and waiting to swoop in and take credit for what we create. (not saying that I created the term Glow Up, but a person of color surely did. The owner of the trademark is not a person of color) PROTECT YOUR SMARTS, SIS! This lifestyle led her to her interest in investing and by the age of 21, she had saved $10K and started her portfolio as well as investing in real estate throughout her 20’s. Today she is worth over $100,000.

Her goal now is to help people make investing work for them in a simple way.

Ashley avidly read about personal finance and homeownership throughout her teens and twenties. As a result, Ashley used $10,000 saved from hours of serving tables and college refunds checks to open her first investment account at 21. Ashley then purchased her first investment home at 24 and her second the following year with money steadfastly saved from working two jobs. Ashley proudly worked as a server trainer for six years at Founding Farmers and Farmers & Distillers and greatly attributes her experiences there for her financial success. At 19, Taylor moved to Spain which again put Taylor outside of her comfort zone but essentially prepared her for the world of entrepreneurship. After returning to Wharton and graduating, Taylor quickly felt the pressure to follow in the path that was expected by her based on her Ivy league education.

Now, Taylor is a Digital Nomad and Online Marketing Entrepreneur focused on helping businesses have 5+ figure launches. Something that all her professional and personal experiences had prepared her for.

We walk throughout Taylor's journey of figuring out what she wanted for herself, while shedding society's expectations of what her life should be.

Here's what we talk about:

  • The impact of comparing your journey to others
  • How to stay on course, even during periods of self-doubt
  • The real journey after college and the pressure of finding a job in your career field
  • How the fear of failure can put you in situations that don’t always leave you fulfilled

Sierra Howard of the I Don't Do Budgets Podcast talks about how she went from 9k in debt to secretly paying it all off.

Sierra talks about how she started developing a really bad spending habit in college and how it got out of control. Ticora Davis of The Creator’s Law Firm talks to us about why it’s important for us to trademark our creations as people of color, and how to get it done as cost-effective as possible.

I’m actually in the process of rebranding because I didn’t trademark my brand properly. I’m sharing the story, what I’m going through, and what I learned through my big mistake of not trademarking my brand in the beginning.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through this experience, it’s that the culture vultures are lurking, listening and waiting to swoop in and take credit for what we create. This week we’re talking to Khadijah Polly about how she took one of the simplest ideas - Kettle Corn and grew it into a booming business.

Khadijah always had entrepreneurship blood, and she always had a business idea that she was working on. Not long after getting laid off, Khadijah used a skydiving trip as the motivation she needed to go all in her most recent business idea. She started making popcorn at home and selling it to office employees as the go-to afternoon snack. It didn't take long before Kay's Kettle Corn took off, and Khadijah started doing events, servicing colleges, and even created a popcorn subscription business.

One of the things I love about Khadijah’s story is how she was able to infuse all of her interests and skills that she learned during here 9 to 5 years into this business. So for all of us that are thinking: “What can I actually take from my career or business that will make sense for my business idea?” Listen to this episode! If Khadijah can incorporate HR skills into a successful popcorn business, there has to be at least one thing we can all incorporate from our own day jobs!

Before she even started her business, she got rid of everything that didn’t serve her. Suzanne came up with a financial plan and made sure that before she resigned, she had her money in place.

Her first entrepreneurial endeavor was starting Naked Zero, a sustainable lifestyle brand, and community. This is the first of her many endeavors. Suzanne has so many other ventures now!

If you’re looking to make that life-changing decision, but you’re scared to actually make the jump, this episode is for you.

Here’s what we talk about

  • How black millennials feel like college is the only way to get the ‘good job’
  • How women put too much pressure on ourselves to outperform
  • What corporate burnout is really like
  • Talking to your partner about switching to entrepreneurship

We’re talking to Candice Adams about her journey to creating Chic Geeks, a store that specializes in Macbook cases for girl bosses. Fun fact, I first found out about Candice when I was looking for a case for my laptop, but wanted something modern. I love it It’s super cute, super durable, and easy to use.

Candice is giving 10% off of all Chic Geeks orders for The Glow Up Podcast listeners for a limited time only. Use the code: GLOWUP to get yours today!

One of the interesting things about Candice’s story is how she got into e-commerce through her baby boutique: The Cuddle Shop - and the gag is… she didn’t even have kids! This was really her training ground in the e-commerce world.

Candice’s new idea came to her when she realized she could meet a need in the market. When she purchased a new laptop, she needed a case and couldn’t find anything that matched her style and was also durable. So she decided to create her own line. After 2 years of getting the product right, Chic Geeks was finally launched. Candice shares all the lessons she’s learned along the way. Here’s a little bit of what you’ll learn from her in this episode:

  • How she had to learn how to market to a completely new audience
  • Why financing Chic Geeks with her personal savings was risky
  • What product she wished she would have started with instead of laptop cases
  • The ups and downs of entrepreneurship
  • Why building the right team around you is so important

Imagine deciding on the life you want, and then adjusting everything else to fit around it. Goals, right? That’s exactly what world traveler and go-getter Jessica Nabongo did. Jessica is on a mission to visit all 195 UN countries, and she’s almost DONE! At the time we recorded, she had about 25 countries left, now she’s down to only 10!

She decided to make traveling an important part of her life. and take on work that would allow her to sustain her lifestyle. She’s a freelance writer, she runs a boutique travel agency, and partners with brands to promote their offerings to her audience.

I honestly stan for Jessica. Not only because she’s travel goals (and photo goals, go check out her IG!), but because she decided she was going to pursue the life that she wanted on her own terms… And did it.

Jessica’s story definitely makes you rethink what it means to live the life you want. If you’re trying to make a deliberate shift in the way you live your life, and need the inspiration to keep going, this episode is for you!

This week, we're taking it back to one of my favorite episodes, because it's so relevant today!

If you're feeling unstuck, or like things aren't moving for you, at least one of these four reasons could be why.  Take a listen and let me know what you think!

I wanted to share a story with you that most people don't know. My first business was a complete FLOP. I didn’t have the right systems, mindset and DEFINITELY no accountability. ⁣

I had all of the excuses ⁣

⁣“I have a lot going on right now”⁣

“I need to build my website”⁣

“My clients aren’t buying what I’m selling” hm… wonder why. ⁣

And now, The Glow Up is real (pun intended). By starting my new business the right way, I was able to match my salary from my first launch, and I'm on track to do it again. Since then, I've been able to:

Grow my email list from 50 to almost 1,000 in 1 month ⁣

Hit that 10k follower count on IG (yes it matters)⁣

Grown my podcast downloads to over 20k. ⁣

It's the system I set up to grow my brand & business... and it's WORKING. I’m talking all about how I made it happen in this episode:

  • My first business was a complete flop (Listen at 1:45)
  • How I laid the FOUNDATION for my new business, and why this is so important (Listen at 2:30)
  • Being scared to take the first step (Listen at 17:00)
  • How you can replicate my success for YOURSELF (Listen at 22:00)

The Big takeaway is this:

I’ve put in the work, corrected the mistakes, and built the framework for you. You don’t have to struggle with the same mistakes I did.

Let’s have a quick chat to see if this program is a good fit for you!

In this episode, we're talking to my girl Jenny who moved from Ethiopia to go to school in the states.  She quickly climbed the corporate ladder and was being prepped for a management position, when she decided to leave everything behind.

My girl quit her job, moved back to Ethiopia, and started her business.  NONE of this would be possible without her grind.

In this episode, we’re talking to Christina Duren, founder of Beautiful Brown girls, who talks about leaving a full scholarship to pursue her dream of moving to New York. Christina ended up working at Def Jam, which gave her an opportunity to flex her PR muscles.

Christina ended up getting pregnant and moving back to Miami, but couldn’t really find her tribe. At first, creating Beautiful Brown girls was a way for her to fellowship and find a community that she could connect with. Her first meetup was a brunch with a total of 15 ladies. Now, it's a global network of 23 chapters with 38,000 members!

The community includes entrepreneurs, corporate executives, college deans, and so many other black women from different backgrounds.

In the beginning, they were not making any money. In fact, Christina was paying for all of this from her full time job. It took about 5 years (including one year of burnout) before they actually made money. Now that’s commitment.

Listen to her story of transition and growth here!

Ok I’m warning you now, this episode is basically all about Beyonce.

This episode is all about stanning for Beyoncé’s Coachella performance. I hosted a watch party last weekend with some of my girls, and we were BLOWN away by her performance. Beyoncé exudes so many levels of excellence.

After the performance, we had a chat about how lit this performance was. I realized in our conversation that there were at least 10 things we can learn from Beyoncé’s homecoming show.

10 things you can learn from Beyonce’s homecoming performance

  1. The devil is in the details
  2. Be intentional
  3. Be true to who you are
  4. Always be in pursuit of excellence
  5. It takes a team. You can’t do it alone, and you don’t have to
  6. Underpromise and overdeliver
  7. Use your power for good
  8. Create your own experiences
  9. Share your story
  10. Dream bigger

Whew!

I got so much amazing feedback about The Glow Up Summit! What a lot of people don’t know is that I was completely unproductive after the launch. I was wiped out! Launching is exhausting, and when you’re not fully prepared for all of the marketing that needs to be done, it’s even worse. Lesson learned.

The next time I launch you better believe I’ll spend just as much time creating and automating my marketing strategy as I will curating the actual product. Systems and automation are two of my best friends now!

In this episode, I’m sharing how automation and systems are important, as well as some other lessons I’ve learned in entrepreneurship. I started talking about the top 5 lessons, but I think I added a couple more at some point shrugs.

My top 5 lessons in entrepreneurship

  1. Make the time to make things happen
  2. You need to love, or at least really like what you do
  3. Preparation is key - Systems and Automation are your best friends!
  4. You don’t have to have it all figured out
  5. You NEED a plan

Bonus lessons

  1. Your network is your net worth
  2. Don’t quit your day job.

Today we’re talking to best-selling author, motivational speaker Gayneté Jones, a Bermudian who is also charting her own path. This episode is extra special to me because I get to share more stories of another successful Bermudian Woman! It's really amazing to put my country on the map in ways that haven't been done before.

Gayneté started taking part in international experiences when she was in her teens. While living in Venezuela, she was held hostage by police officers, and it was at this point that she realized that nothing is guaranteed.

After moving back to Bermuda, she enrolled in a college program but ended up getting pregnant. Even though she was technically a teen mom at 19, she didn’t let statistics define what she could or couldn’t be. Most people write you off in terms of what you’ll be able to achieve after having a baby so young, but Gayneté wasn’t having that

She eventually found the start of what would be her passion and began writing her first book. Then, tragedy struck.

Listen to the episode for more.

In this episode we talk about:

  • What it’s like to grow up in Bermuda
  • Getting out of your comfort zone
  • Not letting other people define your journey
  • Pivoting in your career and business
  • Having an exit strategy when leaving your full-time job
