In this book Ola Raknes presents important aspects of the life and work of Wilhelm Reich and describes how Reich discovered orgone energy. This episode features the audio from one of our ACO case presentation series webinars, “A Sexually Confused Young Man.” In this episode, Edward Chastka, M.D. tells Dr. Burritt about Bill, a 19-year-old young man who came to him after being discharged from a psychiatric facility where he’d been hospitalized briefly after developing an acute psychosis. His psychotic episode appeared to have been triggered by the increased use of alcohol, cannabis and occasionally, amphetamines.
As Bill emerged from his psychosis, he revealed a history of confusion and fears about his sexuality. Initially, Dr. Chastka’s therapy focused on resolving Bill’s confused and psychotic thinking and then was directed toward helping him discern the relationship between his sexual fears and his paranoid and delusional thinking. Listen in to hear how Dr. Chastka helped Bill understand his sexual feelings and realize what kind of intimate relationship was best for him.

Salvatore Iacobello, M.D., tells Dr. Burritt about his six-year-old patient Kayla, who had episodes of anger as well as severe temper tantrums mostly at home, while she was well behaved at school. Her parents sought treatment with Dr. Iacobello because they were unable to effectively deal with this out-of-control child.
Dr. Iacobello utilized play in Kayla’s therapy, providing her with an outlet for emotional expression. Using play also gave the child the opportunity to have the emotional contact she very much needed. With the social and political divide that intensified in the U.S. after the 2016 election, doctors Peter A. Crist and Edward Chastka, two ACO psychiatrists, started a sociopolitical discussion group in February of 2017. They wanted to give people an opportunity to look at varying social and political views in our country and in the world using principles from their therapy practices that would allow participants to discuss opposing views with an open mind and get to the heart of the problem. The two doctors taught the group basic principles about how people think and express themselves, so that participants were then able to apply those precepts to working with others in the group, in other social and political situations, and in their personal lives. In this episode, Dr. Burritt interviews Peter Crist M.D., president of the ACO. Dr. Crist, an observer by nature, emphasizes the importance of distinguishing observations from conclusions and highlights this simple yet profound distinction as part of the foundation of functional thinking. He explains that what drew him to Wilhelm Reich’s work and orgonomy was Reich’s method of functional thinking. One must, as Reich put it, “observe, observe, and observe,” no matter how difficult it might be to not let feelings, preconceived notions or uncertainty cloud any judgments, and allow conclusions to spontaneously come to the observer.

The ACO has an ongoing social orgonomy training program where trainees learn to use functional thinking to address problems in business, education, and relationships. A live social orgonomy presentation was planned for April, 2020 but sadly had to be canceled secondary to the pandemic. This interview touches on some of what was to be discussed and when possible that knowledge will be brought to listeners in one form or another.

Anna was a young girl who had terrible frightening thoughts and nothing her parents did seemed to help. In treatment with Dr. Dale Rosin it became clear that she was not delusional but that her emotional problems were manifesting in these scary sometimes crazy sounding ideas. Dr. Rosin's presentation shows how Anna's character, she was always the good little girl, interfered with her speaking up and using her natural and healthy aggression. Her treatment required no medication and had remarkable results beyond just eliminating the initial symptoms.

Dr. Alberto Foglia M.D. discusses the treatment of two patients and highlighted a key difference of how the ACO doctors view anxiety - as a symptom and not a diagnosis. We learn that anxiety can often be the result of another emotion (anger or sadness for example) being blocked. Dr. Foglia was able to address the one patient's characteristic way of handling his feelings both psychologically and physically so successfully that not only did he feel emotionally more content and have his panic resolve but remarkably his blood pressure came down and anti-hypertensives were no longer required for treatment.
