'“Letters from Nowhere” is the third and final release in Stefano Guzzetti’s Piano Book series where its sonic palette, during the time span of a decade, changed progressively. Starting from “At home”, the first volume where the protagonist was just the acoustic and minimal expressiveness of the instrument, passing through “Short stories”, where subtle electronics were added to the resonance of the notes, and arriving to this final album, where the piano plays along with a range of selected old hardware synthesizers.
“Letters from Nowhere” is a correspondence from imaginary places and states of mind, where the composer took his time to describe the intensity of one moment, the vastness of despair, but also the joy of reuniting again with the people and places we love. This work is also a love letter to Japan, with tracks like “Shoji” and “Tokyo at night” describing the beauty of places and settings that, even if strongly contrasting in their nature, never fail to catch the heart of the composer.
“At home” was released with the 051 catalogue number, with “Short stories” following as 105. We conclude with this last album as release 150 in the Home Normal catalogue. Whether by accident or design, this third release in the series is the best way to close this body of work started in 2014 on Home Normal.'

Both 'Expanse' and 'Distance' cemented his place as an artist with remarkable control of his analog machines; with beautifully evolving melodies gently seeping through the harmonious tape noise of his now signature sound.'Trust' follows on from these works in his most subtle and patient work yet. Whilst the modular framework and dedication to tape recording remain, this is a release centred around upright piano and is a perfectly balanced way of approaching an instrument in a patient way, letting notes ring out with weightlessness and a timeless ease of character.It is in this timelessness that the music of Fields We Found resonates so deeply, breathing gently and encompassing each surrounding texture as the world passes by. We've been so happy at Home Normal to work with regular contributors to the label, and this has now evolved as we invited two of our small family of artists to release back-to-back albums with us. Early next year will see two albums from Wil Bolton which we are incredibly excited to share, whilst we are very proud to present 'frayed' and 'hope remain' from the truly wonderful anthéne this autumn.
Anyone who has followed the ambient scene in recent years will have come across the work of this highly-respected artist from both his solo work and regular collaborations. Brad also runs the excellent Polar Seas Recordings label from his native Canada.
Brad's work is typically based on carefully constructed guitar and synth structures using slowly-evolving loops. Whilst both 'hope remain' and 'frayed' continue this vein of sound for Brad, his source of instrumentation over the creative period evolved slightly to incorporate percussive elements. 'hope remain' is a slight variation in that it was based upon processed piano and string works.
As Brad notes:
''hope remain' initially started with processed piano and string loops, and was expanded upon with guitar, glockenspiel and tongue drum. The title is in reference to Frida Kahlo’s painting 'Tree of Hope, Remain Strong'. In addition to being a beautiful work or art, the idea at the centre of this painting really struck me. With so much potential for despair (with climate change, right wing politics, etc.), I still really want to try to see the good in all of us, the potential for us to do the right thing (as impossible as it seems sometimes). The album is hopeful at its core.'

As Brad notes:
''frayed' has more experimentation in sound than my previous work. There are more decaying textures and melodies, and it's often more minimal and heavily processed. The end result is still melodic but feels like it's fraying at the edges.'
'frayed' will be followed by 'hope remain' two weeks later (on October 21st) and we are so thrilled to be sharing the work of a singular artist as we move into autumn.

In 2017 and 2018 James Murray released 'Killing Ghosts' and 'Falling Backwards' on Home Normal to critical acclaim. Between then and now we've come to absorb some remarkable collaborations between James and Stijn Hüwels as Silent Vigils, with Ian Hawgood as Slow Reels, alongside 2020's 'Suññatā' with Mike Lazarev, and 'Remote Redux' with Francis M. Gri. 'Careful Now' however, is James Murray's first solo release since 2019 and marks a very welcome return indeed for one of our favourite ever artists and sound designers.
James' music is always personal; always from the heart. It is this that marks his work out from the majority of today's electronic-ambient scene and why he stands out as such a highly respected artist amongst his peers. His compositions always feature a carefully constructed and original sound palette, filled with unique melodic elements throughout, no matter whether tending in nature towards darkness or light.
'Careful Now' is a radiant, soft-focused work of wide-eyed romanticism and childlike innocence. Deep rumbling bass elements burst open like flood gates into huge synth drone driven melodies and textures fizzing and skittering over the surface of all the depth that continues to resonate below. It is an album of heartfelt humanity and purity of spirit that can indeed 'draw light' into our very being as the final track attests.
I've greatly missed James Murray's solo output over the past three years and I’m so happy we get to release this astonishing collection of life-affirming ambient music at last. Welcome back James.

modular sleep patterns is the duo of long-term collaborators Stijn Hüwels and Ian Hawgood. Their latest work comes under a new moniker with a focus on modular sourced music recorded onto old and slightly broken reel to reel machines.
The base of these 'patterns' was processing loops from an OP-1 synth through a Ciat Lonbarde modular set-up and recording straight onto old tape we needed to use up before it snapped due to age and decay. Using vocals and synths going into the simple OP-1 sampler engine, the (slightly uncontrollable) reels would create pitch-shifting patterns of deep drone music which we layered with guitars. Mixed into a single long-form work despite the clear track changes, the album was created over a number of late night - early morning sessions, and lightly mastered in the analog domain before final transfer.
This marks a new way of working for us, and one in which we can never recover the work again due to the state of the old reels used in this case. The use of these reels have led to a recording that is deeply textured with numerous layers (and deeply hidden old recordings in the tape itself), gently seeping through as a mark of all the recording/s done to get to this point. Whilst the process itself has been inherently fun as a late night set of experiments, the music has shone through as a warm, fuzzy and multi-layered minimalist work we are incredibly proud of.
The album has intentionally been made in a quiet form, in the hope you find these patterns a gentle persuasion to sleep and/or rest easy.

'into the setting sun' is an album of pure beauteous ambient music, as we've come to expect from two of the leading voices in the ambient scene today. Sourced from layers of guitar, the album unfolds in its own gentle way, subtlety revealing layers of discreet melodies with the slightest sways of field recordings seeping through.
Their work together is a perfect amalgamation of organic ambient music which the label always hoped to release. That this marks a complete collaboration between our two most prolific artists in recent years is such a proud moment, and we feel they've made something truly special as we enter the summer months.

After a little hiatus for the label, we are so glad to be welcoming back our very own David Cordero almost exactly a year since his last solo release with us. This time David has worked in collaboration with the incredibly talented Japanese ambient composer Kenji Kihara (aka. sphontik).
'Komorebi 木漏れ日' is an album of subtle electronics within an ambient framework that beautifully draws in the light between the spring and summer seasons. Whilst we don't have a direct translation for 'Komorebi', the music perfectly encapsulates the loose meaning of light filtering through branches on a sunny day with its gentle touch and droplets of melodies interspersed throughout.
Here's what David and Kenji had to say about their first collaboration together:
David:
'I met Kenji in 2018 during my first concert in Tokyo. We performed on this night and I loved his performance from the first melody. Once back in Spain I couldn't stop listening to his music so I wrote to him with a proposition to record an album together.'
Kenji:
'When David sent me the first sound, I confirmed that this album would be very nice. My sounds and David's are organically mixed to create a deeply pleasing ambient work.'
Featuring unique photography from our dear friend Hitoshi Ishihara, we are so excited to present these in our usual 200 CD edition once again.

Rosales follow-up their debut for the Archives label 'Still, Tomorrow' with 'Woven Songs'. Written between 2019 and 2020, Ian Hawgood and Brad Deschamps decided to release on their respective labels (Home Normal and Polar Seas Recordings) in vinyl edition featuring artwork by Laura Kay Keeling.
This new long form work was sourced from guitar and synth loops processed on Space Echo decayed textures layered onto cassette and reel-to-reel for final recording. The effect is dusty layers of warped ambient structures that build carefully only to slowly fragment as the noise from the analog machines whir beyond what has gone before.

In January 2016, Home Normal was lucky enough to release the excellent 'El Rumor del Oleaje' by David Cordero to critical acclaim. Since then, David has gone on to release a number of solo and collaborative works, including two excellent releases with the electronic artist dot tape dot.
'Lambda: {λ}' is his long-awaited return to the label after over five years. An album of subtle ambient-electronics, David highlights his unique talent in creating an album of carefully constructed, subtle and slowly-evolving sounds, quite different to the more recent grandiose releases on Dronarivm and Archives with 'Honne (本 音)' and 'Salinas' respectively.
It is this quiet nature I have always loved in David's work and I don't think there are many better artists out there who can develop these highly melodic little worlds of sound that are perfectly contained in their relatively short-form constructions. Indeed, 'Lambda: {λ}' is an album that has been something of a mainstay during our time at home through the winter and spring, becoming a perfect soundtrack to time spent quietly appreciating the changing seasons in the haven we live.
The album has been created alongside artists such as Miguel Otero, Carlos Maquieira (Duister) and Pepo Galán, and once again features the Polaroid artwork of Stijn Hüwels on the cover.

In 2014 I was fortunate enough to come across the music of Hotel Neon quite randomly while perusing for new purchases on Bandcamp that day. The album's credits were simply noted as being the music of Andrew and Michael Tasselmyer using a 2-track USB recording device, assorted cheap guitars and effects processors, and a personal computer in Wilmington, DE. Apart from being enamoured by the humbleness of these simple credits, the music was bold and open; filled with emotion and memory quite unlike anything I'd heard in quite a while.
I spent the next few months obsessively listening and decided to do a CD edition for them on Home Normal soon after. The rest, as they say, is history. Hotel Neon have added a member in the very talented Steven Kemner, have toured and collaborated with Benoit Pîoulard, The Sight Below, Simon Scott, and Marcus Fischer to name a few, and are now established as one of the foremost ambient groups around today.
In that time, Andrew Tasselmyer has come out as a quite brilliant solo-artist. His recent 'May Mornings' release was my personal favourite of 2020, and to have him back on Home Normal after all these years is such an honour.
Andrew's new vein of modular-sourced ambient work is just the right balance of carefully developed melodic structures and noisy analog instrumentation. It is no great surprise that Andrew will be following up his Home Normal release in a few months with an album of similarly sourced material for Seil Records as well. We can't wait to see what the year brings for this most humble and unique of sound architects.

With Toronto on another lockdown we've been trying to find new activities for our 2 year old daughter. I bought some instruments I thought she might enjoy playing with: a kalimba and a tongue drum. While she was sleeping I spent time weaving these instruments around guitar loops. I found myself adding other elements, random objects sitting in my studio with me, pens, glasses, mallets, and books to add some textures and tones to add movement to these recordings. I credit our daughter Saphiya with the album title, as she runs around outside trying to run away from her shadow. To me these pieces reflect this playfulness, and feel uplifting in a pretty somber time.
